I think Abrams and co. will probably make a great movie, even if it isn't the best tribute to it's source material. It still bugs me that they have one director doing both Wars and Trek, though, and having Cumberbatch (probably) playing a main villain in both doesn't really help much.

Honestly, I kinda feel bad that I don't like Benedict Cumberbatch. But I think most of it is because I'm tired of seeing him talked about via Tumblr and stuff. It can get quite annoying. There's some speculation that he's going to be playing the Sith baddie througout the new trilogy, but I honestly hope it's a one movie deal. I can see him as a Grand Moff Tarkin sort of character, because he really does have the stature of someone who can be imposing. But I really don't know how I feel about him as the main villain for all three movies.

However, it is good news that JJ is going to be using film instead of digital. I'm glad to hear that John Williams was attached, because I was afraid of him being replaced. The shooting in England sounds good to me and I've heard that they're going to try more practical effects throughout the movie. Maybe we'll see more storm trooper costumes rather than CGI'd troops.

I'm still rather cautious of the movie itself. I know that JJ Abrams is a fan, a lifelong fan as well. So I'm hoping he'll do the series justice. But I'm reigning in all of my hopes so as not to be disappointed that it doesn't live up to expectations. Because let's be serious. I think if the movie is good, that's all it's going to be. It's going to either be absolute shit, it's going to be good. Or it will be mind blowingly awesome. But let's be serious, I very much doubt it will live up to 4-6. There won't be the same sense of wonder that you felt sitting in the theater watching it for the first time. Or sitting in your living room as a child.

Although, I may just be lowering my expectations to the bare minimum so I won't be disappointed whether it's good or bad. I just don't want to hear the fanboys complain after the movie comes out, because as with Star Trek there will be fans out seeking blood whether the movie was good or bad.

I'm cautiously hopeful, personally. It'll take a lot to recapture the magic of the original trilogy, but it's certainly doable. The one expectation that I do have is that the outcome will be strongly one way or the other: either we'll have A New Hope or we'll watch in horror as The (Disney) Empire Strike Back.
