And I am back!
So we get to the airport and my girlfriend did automated checkin, not letting me look at the screen. The tickets were printed and she gave me one - all in kanji (it was a local flight within Japan), so I still could not tell where we were headed. Even in the departure lounge, where there was
some English, the only thing it said was the name of the airport we were flying to (Shin Chitose), rather than the city or region of Japan that said airport was in! And even on the flight itself they only mentioned the destination airport!
Net result, until I stepped off the plane and saw the "Welcome to Hokkaido" signs, I honestly had no idea where we were!
Anyway, it was a great five days, so much to see and do. And trust me, I had plenty of the local wine for which Hokkaido is famous. A great trip indeed!
