I was wondering: since the Navy reformed, perhaps it would be of some use to retake control of the Navy's website: http://www.imperial-navy.com/Just an idea... What do you guys think? For a very long time, there's been an effort going to reform the main VE website (see here). I have to admit, I'd been so preoccupied with that project that I hadn't really thought about the Division's site. Let me talk to the higher-ups and see what would be involved with reclaiming/updating imperial-navy.com. Nice thinking, Xanin. Sorry to intrude, but how about we suggest just getting rid of those sites entirely? The wiki does a lot and the information is a lot more easily edited. Websites take work, haha. And then you have to get permissions to edit and people leave and stuff like that. It's why all of those side sites haven't been updated in forever. Most of the info's on the wiki and most of the people with permission to edit the sites are gone. That's a valid point. But I think that people don't use the websites because they're not updated. Recent news, updates and the like should be located on the website, for ease of access. I have website and HTML coding experience, and would be willing to assist, Trykon. That was a mistake, then. Regular Navy updates are needed, even if they are as simple as "No new news" or "Let's keep going with [current story]".
If there are changes to the structure, or promotions, or the like (which aren't updated/shown on the wiki), then there needs to be an easily accessible area that isn't buried away in the ComNet.

Fair enough. Frankly, I'm just eager to have SOMETHING to point new recruits toward. If the main site overhaul becomes a reality, I'd be all for quietly retiring the division sites. I too feel that those division websites should be retired and dropped. As has been mentioned, maintaining them and the wiki is a little redundant, and the wiki is so much easier to update. But also let us not forget the cost! Keeping a website domain name costs money, and alas this website isn't as free to run as it is to use. I'll be the other voice also saying that the divisional page, while it sounds like a good idea, isn't really practical. I go to the wiki for everything, and I think the Com is pretty informative about current stories/awards/etc especially when a few of us keep running numbers. Serpent also makes a good point about cost.
And funny thing that Tryk mentions new recruits. I was talking to a creative writing major the other day about this site and, while I gave him the VE main site, I basically told him that the Comnet was our main site. Sometimes I wonder how ppl even wander onto the Comnet without someone recruiting them and helping them get signed up. Anyone with enough privileges can make a topic a news item on the VE homepage and filter it by specific divisions. |
