Welcome back, Dunny. I see you want to transfer to capital ships, but your ID line is a new character. Clarify for me which it is, and we'll get started.

The ID line was a mistake on my part. I will be using Dunny, and I've fixed my ID line accordingly.

Excellent. In that case, we'll start with a short story (1,000 words) describing where Dunny was during his time away from the VE and why he is coming back (the so-called "refresher course"), and then we'll see how you do with Fleet School. Post your short story to the Navy Story Board, as Dunny: title (RC), and then post again here when you're done. Welcome back again.

Not too shabby. I do have one significant criticism of the piece, though: you - as in, you, the writer, as the narrative voice of the story - swear a lot. I'm not particularly squeamish personally, so I don't really mind, per se, but remember the ComNet is ostensibly PG-13. As such, try to find other ways to communicate the tone you're going for, other than resorting to course language. With that said, you pass the story portion of the Refresher Course.
The second half of the RC calls for you to familiarize yourself with the Fleet School pages, but since you've never been in Fleet Command, instead of glancing at the wiki pages to refresh your memory you'll actually do the work of the course. I know you went through Starfighter School (formerly known as Flight School) already, so there's going to be some repeated stuff, but that just means you shouldn't have too hard a time with Fleet School. Go ahead and move on to Chapter 1 of Fleet School, and report in to this thread regularly with your progress.

Belay that. Looking over Dunny's history, I've noticed a lot of discrepancies and contradictions. I'm going to give the poor guy a comprehensive retcon to bring him back into believable levels. It is going to take a while.

That's part of what the Refresher Course is designed to do: let you course-correct your PC before jumping into active duty again. Take your time as you think about what you want from the character, moving forward.
That said, try to avoid giving in to perfectionism. You're not writing the Great American Novel next... you're just seeing how your player-character in a play-by-post Star Wars rpg would approach a training mission as a member of a Star Destroyer's bridge crew.

Okay, I've given Sam Dunn a revision. His backstory has been expanded and the foggy details cleared up, whilst any self-contradictions have been removed. His personality has changed subtly as a result of his upbringing: He is no longer a carefree hedonist, but a 'civilized' savage whom struggles to overcome his barbaric inner nature.
Hopefully, this, along with the new strengths and weaknesses that it implies, will make him more believable a character.
At the moment, he is aggressive and determined, but naive and lacking in self-discipline.

Seven hundred words down already, sir. I am pleased to say that Dunn is getting on well with Rolan Marr. A fighter pilot appreciates a skilled Flight Control Officer.
...We don't have any Flight Control officers in the Fleet as PC's, do we sir?

As yet, no. Stay tuned for the announcement later today about transfers between branches: it will also say that while the initial offerings for positions aboard capital ships are somewhat limited, they are just that... initial. Choose where you start your career aboard ship, and then make sure your superiors know where you want that career to head in the future, and we'll make it happen. Flight Control seems like a natural progression for a former pilot, for example. I'd suggest starting in the Communications section, and working toward a Flight Control position from there.

To be entirely honest sir, I still do not quite understand the communications position, and what it entails. As far as I can see, it is simply manning the ship's radio, but surely there is more to it than that?

While technically, that description is more or less accurate, I think it could benefit from some perspective. Consider these points: 1.) A "radio," as we understand it, is pretty unsophisticated, in comparison to all the equipment/techniques used by communications personnel aboard Imperial capital ships: hyperwave transmitters, holo-emitters, encryption algorithms, etc. 2.) A radio operator in a terrestrial army or even naval vessel, irl, doesn't really talk to a wide variety of people, it's true. A comms person on a Vast Empire ship? Quite the opposite. They need to be able to coherently communicate tactics, technical orders, and shorthand codes to military personnel, AND deal with civilians, from the lowest pirate to heads of state of Galactic-level factions! And, that's before we get into INTERNAL communications... 3.) An Imperial I-class Star Destroyer has almost 40,000 sentient beings onboard, spread across a mile-long ship. You can look down on the job, if you choose, I suppose, but these "switchboard operators" (comms folks) are collectively like a central nervous system, making sure all the organs of the vast organism can communicate with all the others. Just saying, things are a deal more complex and important than picking up a phone every now and then and saying, "Hello?"

Ah, okay. I understand it now - I didn't realize quite how complex the job was. I knew there had to be some complexity to it, and so there is. Thank you for explaining it to me.
It's a vital job, but I don't feel that Dunny as a character, or myself as a person, have quite the maturity required to perform a non-combat role. Yet.
Which, in effect, means that I am not quite ready to join the Imperial Fleet yet. I think I need to grow as a writer a little more before I truly attempt something like this - it was a mistake to request a transfer.
I apologize for wasting your time, sir. With your permission, I will complete Part II of the test, and have Dunny fail it.
If at all possible, I would prefer to remain in the SFC...at least, until I feel I have grown up enough to move on to Fleet.
