The screen flickered again bringing up another image, it cast his face in an otherworldly light just for a moment before he turned to face the image of a squad falling from high altitude. His squad was being quiet, only occasionally making comments to each other during various parts of the briefing. They already knew this would be a scouting trip, and hopefully a decent training mission on a few aspects Jaenna and him had found to be lacking in the squad.

"A high altitude low opening jump, or HALO. Is one you had a very basic course of in the Academy, most of you have never done one outside of a simulator. However, you all have experience with the standard jumps that happen anywhere from five to ten thousand feet." Joamer said as he changed the screen again. "Randa has an atmosphere much like Tadath does. Our point of jump will be fifty kilometers above the surface of the planet. We will freefall for just over twenty minutes."

The room went dead silent as they received this news, he knew even in their training the normal jumps were only a few minutes at most. This one would be nearly half an hour, he saw a few doing the calculations of how fast they would be falling. When they got to the final numbers they looked up and blinked.

"As you can see, we will reach terminal velocity in right around sixteen seconds. We will all fall at varying speeds, but not much off. Due to my height, weight, body mass, and equipment I will reach a speed of 322 kilometers and hour. I will fall at 91 meters a second, even if we land in water in an event that my shoot fails the likelihood of me surviving is very slim."

He knew it was not the best idea to put doubt and worry into them, but they had a very long fall ahead of them. If it kept their heads in the game, and they did things correctly everyone would come out in one piece in the end.

Of course that briefing had taken place two days ago, now his squad sat around the small shuttle talking quietly. He heard bits of conversation about the past missions, about the old times before his leadership came into being, even a few more colorful words to describe their current predicament.

Leaning back in his chair he heard a soft growl as his strill Lurk protested at being moved. Reaching over with his left hand he scratched the small creature gently as she nuzzled back position on his shoulder. He knew she was a stunted strill, he had known for a very long time. She was nearly seven now, and should be too big to go on mission, but she was just big enough to sleep on his shoulder still.

He was sure it was against some type of regulation to bring her on a mission, but to him it was not. He had a perfectly good excuse for it anyways, their missions tended to be deep cover assignments and that meant blending in. Carrying a dangerous animal around as a pet helped to do that.

Exactly, when was the last time you saw a Trooper with a pet? The voice in his head asked quietly. We will not mention the one that has that pet Ewok though, that boy is just not right in the head. He wondered if agreeing with himself was a sign of mental instability, though he had been RAIDERS squad leader for over a year now. Mental instability was a moot thing at this point.

"You do know that suit you designed is untested right?" Mox said as he looked over at Joamer and Lurk. The young man shied back slightly as Lurk lifted her head, barred her teeth, and growled softly deep in her throat.

"Easy girl." Joamer soothed softly. Mox and Lurk had begun their relationship on the wrong foot, quite literally in fact. She had been curled up sleeping in a warm area near the engine room when Mox had stumped into her and stepped on one of her six feet. If Joamer had not been there to snatch Lurk out of the air Mox would be without a face right now, ever since then Lurk had taken it as her duty to keep the man off balance. Though, Joamer had noticed he now watched where he placed his feet a lot more often.

"It was designed for her a few years back, it will strap to my suit and we will share the same oxygen supply for the fall down. It's nearly the same as our armor, chemical and temperature protection, as well as the ability to survive in vacuum for a short time." Joamer said as Lurk settled back down and began purring softly, one of her eyes however stayed open as she starred at Mox. "Get some rest, we've still got ten hours before we reach Randa. I just hope the pilot knows what to do, an insertion like this is dangerous if the shuttle comes in wrong."

Leaning back he closed his eyes as he thought it felt odd to be away from the command structure after so long. The last year had been spent running missions that would secure them positions for their push coreward. Mission after mission had been undertaken with those who had operational command not far away. Now, his squad was far away from Tadath, he had only the collective experience of his squad to draw on to come out of this one. His own experience had given him the ability to not consider a simply scouting mission routine, something usually always went awry in the end.

While sitting in the breifing room, Dusk pondered on changing winds. Three of his squadmates had already been transfered to Jesters. 'Following this pattern, you might as well name it mini-RAIDERS, or somthing'

A few minutes had past and the rest of RAIDERS filed in. 'So what is it this time. Crazy crime lord bit off more than he could chew? New Republic leader in need of capturing? No, scouting mission.' The man's face drooped at the blandness of this mission. 'Well, at least there has to be a twist.'

"We will be freefalling for over 20 minutes." Joamer said.

'20 minutes?!,' Dusk screamed in his head. 'We'll be at terminal velocity for 20 fracking minutes. If I die, I'm going to kill the AHC.'

=========================

Sitting in his apartment, Dusk looked across the room at his two Massifs, Leroy and Jenkins, knawing on a large bone. "Larik, come here." Dusk called. From the cross beams of the room dropped a small figure onto Dusk's shoulders. The small creature wrapped it's tale around the privates neck. "Larik, were is the knife I had on the table there?"

Black eyes stared into Dusk's hazel ones inocently. The kowakian leaped back into the rafters, and after a few minutes, came back with a hand crafted, leather bound knife Dusk had removed from a dead wookie. He had ment to return it to the trooper that it beloged to, but didn't.

Glancing at the holo-pad on the table nearby, Dusk quickly stood knocking Larik from his position on his lap. Opening the metal cabinets that housed his weapons and armor, he quickly sliped into the bodysock of the new armor. Doning the rest of the armor, Dusk began grabbing his balsters and what not. Holstering his twin EE-3's and pistol, the man burst out the door and sprinted for the hanger.

If anything, the idea of being at terminal velocity painted a pretty little picture of excitement within the newly promoted woman's mind. At this point, Jae couldn't do anything but be excited, it was the only thing she could do in order to not dwell on what had happened on O65-B. Though even with her mask of excitement, whether or not most of the happiness was true, images of Ruthard Krotos continued to float through her mind. The promotion, the medal, the good words of praise... They would have brought anyone else back from the little pit of sadness that she seemed to have found herself in again but they barely touched her happiness, they had only improved her confidence and desire to take back RAIDERS. That confidence was the only thing that kept a smile on her face, that and the excitement of being dropped onto a planet within a few hours.

As she looked around the shuttle, an annoyance fluttered to her mind, her good eye narrowing as she noted the still empty seats that were supposed to be filled by Dusk and Heliwer. The others were already there and ready it seemed, even Mox looked as though he was looking forward to having something to do. A snort erupted from her nostrils as her gaze flickered to Joamer, who was now messing about with Lurk.

"'Ey. Where the hell are they? Don't they know we go in twenty minutes?" Despite the annoyance, her tone was calm and smooth, much different than what it had been as of late.

Joamer shrugged. "They know, but it's on them if they don't care. They get left behind, they get written up for not being ready on time."

"Feh. They need to get here. I really don't feel like having to write anyone up."

"You wouldn't have to, I would." Joamer pointed to the pauldron of his armor that was painted orange.

Instantly, Jae's voice silenced it self in order to save her own sanity and her place in the squad. Ever since the mission on O65-B, she'd been wishing she could find a way to knock Joamer down from his position and step back into the boots that she believed fit her better. Even with the excitement from being promoted and having a new shiny to put on her dress uniform, the resentment of Joamer having what she wanted kept stabbing the back of her mind. If she was able to ignore, she would, but for after her first stint as Squad Leader she had been more attached to this squad than her own family, if she were even able to call it that. They had replaced her family. Well... her blood family. The ones that had gotten so lost in their research they had decided to try and use their own daughter as an experiment.

It was that last thought that reminded Jae where the RAIDERS were going. They had been given orders to scout an abandoned base and an abandoned genetic testing facility. The woman knew she'd have a hard time keeping her cool while in the genetic facility, which is the reason why she had begged Joamer to allowed her to bring at least five of her spice packed sticks along on the ride. Placing a gloved hand on the messenger bag she brought on all missions she made herself relax again. Even with the sticks' new spice to tobacco ratio, they'd help her along, help keep the anxiety down and keep her mind in the mission instead of the past.

"Thank you." The words were mouthed silently across the shuttle to Joamer as she nodded towards him. He nodded back and the woman couldn't help but smile. It seemed he was finally beginning to understand her medicinal use and, what she had finally begin to accept as one, her addiction.

The silence was broken by hurried footsteps as both Dusk and Heliwer trotted up the ramp and into the shuttle.

Heliwer laughed nervously. "Sorry I'm late, couldn't find one of my weapons." He took a seat near Jae and settled down with his equipment.

Dusk sat on the other side of the shuttle, near Mox and also settled down, remaining quiet and without an excuse for his lateness.

"Well?" Jae pipped up, her brow quirking as she looked at Dusk with a pure spark of authority. "What the hell is your excuse?"

"Don't have one." The answer was simple and defiant.

The one-eyed woman shot a look to Joamer and raised her shoulders in a silent, pleading gesture. At a nod from the man, Jae went right into her bag and pulled out one of the hidden sticks, stuck it between her lips and lit it up. After a nice long drag, she exhaled and released a relaxed sigh as she once again silently mouthed a 'thank you' across the shuttle to Joamer. Thankfully, with the new ratio of spice to tobacco, anyone else would think she was just smoking a hand-rolled lungblaster that had stronger tobacco. Not that it mattered what they thought, though. Not after Joamer let it slip that she smoked spice in order to keep herself calm during the mission on O65-B.

With another sigh and another drag, Jae concluded that she didn't care what they thought. Doing what she had been has kept her sane (for the most part) and alive. All that was different now was less spice in order to ween her off a bit and save her from withdrawal attacks during long bouts of not smoking. "We ready to get moving?" She asked as the stick hung in her lips, smoke lifting from the tip and creating the normal halo of sweet smelling smoke around her head.

"Sure. Looks like everyone is here. Let's set off." Joamer shrugged and licked his com. "We're all here. Lets get going."

"Roger that." The voice echoed through the speakers of the shuttle and the ramp began to close.

Everyone sat back and waited for the ride to get moving, their minds relaxed and at ease with the idea that this mission was just a simple scouting thing. Nothing could go wrong.

Once again the peculiar band of people that were known as the RAIDERS were off to some obscure planet to do a routine mission that would invariably end in disaster. The shuttle they were sat on was nothing special, of they never were, it was merely the vessel that would send the squad to their doom. They all had healed bodies, clean armour, new shiny trinkets and a few had new stripes on their arms. As was always the case the squad had changed slightly since the last time they had had an outing together, Coadster was now gone and there was once again a hole in the squad; for Karash at least. There were so few people that he actually liked and they all seemed to have moved on.

‘Havock, Grahim, Bright and now Coad, they are all gone. Yet you are still here... one might begin to think that you were stuck here.’

As always the inner commentary proved to be nothing but a pessimistic presentation of the facts. In an ever changing universe Karash seemed to be more or less constant; a low ranking, miserable medic that was stuck in a squad with more problems than an Ewok on Hoth. Those problems, even if he did not want them, always used to find their way to him. People used to want his help to solve them. Now they came from unknown and un-liked people, who had no interest in asking for the medics help.

‘You used to be needed; there was a time when they would listen to your rants. Now you’re lucky if they even acknowledge your existence.’

Karash had never interacted with other members of his squad before a mission but he had always known his place and what is more he had always known his squad-mates. Joamer was as distant as he ever was, Karash had always tried his best to detach himself from Jae and the others were peripheral at best. He had never felt so alone, so out of touch with what used to be his begrudging family.

‘She wants his job and he knows it. He is letting her risk us all with those things. The whole damn squad is on a knife edge and there is nothing you can do. You used to have a voice. Now you could scream and not be heard.’

“What’s the point in bothering? They all leave in the end. They all are in it for what they can get out of it.” Karash muttered as he closed his eyes.

The medic was sat in a dark and isolated corner of the shuttle going over past glories. How could they live up to the past? How could they match what had been the very best? They couldn’t was the only conclusion he could come to. They were not the RAIDERS Karash had loved, they were not the RAIDERS Karash had fought side by side with. They were different; they had formed new bonds that Karash was not included in. At best he was an odd remnant of a forgotten past, at worst he was just odd.

‘You have tried to interact with them but they are not interested. They do not understand. We both know that it is time to move on,one last blaze glory and then into the past. Where you belong.’

It was lucky that Karash was sat in the darkness; it would have been unfortunate if the rest of the squad could have seen the redness in his cheeks and tears forming in his eyes.

He couldn’t help but chuckle when he was thinking of how Coadster was transferred to Jester. Seemed like one of the only true friends he had was now gone and another one was facing her own problems. Felt like the whole galaxy was out to get him. He sighed and resumed chatting with Dusk. The two had gotten some sort of friendly relationship going while on leave and during the Anteevy mission. Seemed only natural that they’d become friends of the sort.

Heliwer stopped when he was informed of the mission. More specifically…

“We’re gonna WHAT!?”

“High Altitude Low Opening jump and free falling for twenty minutes.”

If someone had a camera, the facial expression the sergeant was giving would be all over the holonet. “Oh frak no! I’m not jumping out of a perfectly good ship to end up as soup!”

“What’s the matter?” Joamer asked. “Afraid of a little height?”

“A little? No. But I hate extreme heights! Like what we’re doing! Crazy RAIDERS for nothing!”

His heart accelerated as he already began imagining what would happen. First, he would reach terminal velocity. Then, if things went well, he would pull the chute and land with at the most a broken bone. If the chute failed to activate and the safety chute did not deploy, he would fall into the ground, break every bone in his body, and practically explode on impact. Oh what fun.

One thing that did make the mission a little better was that Xylonia Rose, the newly minted lance corporal, was sitting on the other side of him. The two struck up a relationship between each other, friendly at first, and now were very comfortable with each other. When they had to go undercover and he came and saw her several times, it felt good to see someone from the squad at least a little bit now and then.

He felt that something was bothering him so he looked over into the corner of the transport, where he could just make out the outline of the squad medic and fellow senior sergeant Karash. Something didn’t seem right to him. He seemed more disjointed from the squad than usual. As he began thinking of what was going on, he instinctively felt for a pack of cigarettes and pulled out one. Just after he flicked his lighter on and was about to light the cigarette, he paused, the flickering flame a centimeter away from the end. A thought went through his head, a rather mature thought that made him cap the lighter and return the cigarette to the pack. Perhaps he needs someone to talk to. Maybe you should try for a bit of conversation and try not to be a pack a day smoker like you always are.

Something inside him made him think of his father, about how he had very few friends and how it was hard for him to make new ones after the old ones died or went on. Heliwer just sighed and leaned back to reminisce about the old days, back when his father was still alive.

It was clear that Joamer's slip, whether or not it was intentional, about Jae's drug use had caused some friction within the squad. It sucked, it made her angry, frustrated and want to punch in the stupid man's face. Part of her felt like they all hated her now, part of her ignored that fact and just remained angry with Joamer. Maybe he knew that she wanted her old job back, that she wanted to replace him. Maybe that was why he said what he did, knowing that it would most likely turn the entire squad against her.

"Bastard..." The word had been meant to remain within her mind, but it seemed to have found it's voice and slipped through the woman's lips as she exhaled a great deal of the sweet smoke. As she realized that the word had, in fact, slipped out she looked up and saw Heliwer cocking his head at her with a brow quirked. "Go about yer business, buddy. Just a crazy ol' gal talking to herself."

Heliwer laughed and took another drag of his own unlaced lungblaster. "Right-o, Jae."

The tone of his voice is what almost set her off. Maybe it was just her paranoia of everyone hating her now, but to her it sounded like Heliwer had been condescending, as if he actually thought she was truly crazy. Again, all Jae could think about was the fact that Joamer had probably ruined her chances of ever taking over the squad again. The thoughts continued to escalate in her mind, boiling and tumbling over each other until she finally released a heavy grumble. Slowly, her good eye looked through the shuttle, for what exactly she didn't know until the sea-foam gaze fell onto the medic in the dark corner.

Not only did the Senior Sergeant look off but, considering how the two troopers had always been in the same squad together, the woman could tell something was wrong. Sure, the two had never really spoken but that would be the last thing to stop her from being able to notice when something was up. She felt the need to go over and speak to him, to ask him what was wrong, but she wasn't sure if that alone would allow Karash to come out of his... shell. Might as well bring up something medicine...y. With that thought, the woman stood, stumbled a bit as the shuttle hit atmos turbulence at that moment, and then made her way over to the bench the long time RAIDER was sitting on.

As she plopped down on Karash's left, she took the hand-rolled 'blaster from her lips and held in her left hand, away from him. "Hey so... I'm guessing you're a little ticked about what Joa let slip about me on the station, too, huh?" There was no answer, instead there was a light glance from the medic, one of indifference and maybe even a slight bit of anger. The woman continued. "I figured I'd talk to you, tell you why I do. You have the medical certification after all..." As she finished her voice trailed off, giving off a hint of shame.

It was then that Karash seemed to perk up a bit more, but his response was still sort and rather detached. "Explain away. But that doesn't mean I'll ever agree with it."

Jae shrugged. "Fair enough, I'm not asking you to approve of what I do, I just thought I'd tell the squad medic why I do it now that it's out in the open." She flashed a glare at the Squad Leader before looking back at Karash. "As you know, I've had anger issues in the past." She caught a scoff from the medic and chuckled a bit herself. "Okay... still have anger issues. They're what happens when I have anxiety attacks. I've always had an anxiety disorder, but it never really bothered me much until a couple of years ago, right before I took my first long leave."

"You had issues before that. You freaked out on Kalee."

Jae nodded and shrugged. "Yeah but you can admit they weren't nearly as bad back then. Though that was when they really started to hit me. Stress from being in the Army had begun to affect me, making my anxiety worse and bringing out anger issues instead of a normal anxiety attack in some sort of mental defense I guess." She waved her hands through the air, her lack of understanding when it came to most medical things obvious. "During my first leave I found a way to regulate my anxiety and thus my anger. I would smoke a half gram of spice a week, spaced out and sectioned into these hand-rolled 'blasters." She held up the lit one in her left hand. "I had heard of it being a self-medication process if you used the right mixture. And... well dammit it worked. But then other shit started to happen and I got into a bad place, I got addicted because I was using too much."

She quiet down, though she knew her voice was still filling the shuttle. Jae wouldn't be surprised if the others were listening as intently as she hoped Karash was.

"But after that, after a I got back here, after a few issues I ran into because of that - especially that withdrawal attack I had on O65-B, I've made some changes." She held up the lit stick again and pointed at it with her free hand. "I've cut the ration down by a lot. A whole lot. I'm only smoking as much as I used to when I first started now, and I already feel better about it." She sighed and put both of her hands down again, and looked into the medic's eyes, hoping for some form of understanding.

Karash remained silent for many moments, and when he finally spoke his voice was low and even. Jae couldn't tell if he was annoyed or not. "That's all good and well. But I still think you're putting us in danger by smoking that stuff."

"I want to prove to you, and the rest of RAIDERS, that it's helping me and in turn helping you guys."

Karash nodded and leaned his head back again, once more going into his quiet place. Jae took a deep breath and scooted over just a bit, giving the medic his space once more. She wouldn't bother him about it anymore, he knew and it was his choice to understand.

In the silence of Jae's mind - though there was probably still conversation going throughout the rest of the shuttle - the hours of flight to Randa were seeming to go by rather fast. She was sure they'd be needing to get ready for their HALO in no time at all.

Mox sat silently, having already put on his SCOPE helmet. Now, as Jae brought the drug issue back, Mox started to how long these people knew each other. Heliwer is kinda new, except higher ranked than me... Mox gave Heliwer a glare, though unseen by anyone through the helmet Joamer and Jae seem to go a long way back, and so is Karash... Mox sighed as he leaned back against the shuttle's bench. Well no point thinking now about it...

“How long left till HALO?” Mox said out loud, having turned on his helmet's speaker.

“ETA 20 minutes.” Joamer replied

Nice... flying through air for another 20 minutes.... Mox thought as he began thinking of what could go wrong. Hmm... nothing, or I'll die. And then too bad. Mox glanced at Joamer. For the first time since Thyveck, his SL allowed him another DataPad. But even though 'officially' he was allowed a Datapad, Mox felt that he shouldn't use it until it was needed. There was no telling what Joamer might do.

Mox stood up and started pacing the room. Getting used to the SCOPE armor was becoming easier and easier, having to use it now twice in a row. He reached for his weapons, having taken very little for the mission when compared to other squad members: his trusted DC But no grenades..., his other DC and two vibroknifes. He has also received 3 thermal detonators, as well as DataPad. As well as big amount of mags for his carbine. Well, this is all I ever needed... as well as ration packs.

Mox sat back down and looked around the squad. Dusk, Heliwer & Rose were chatting about something Mox didn't care about, Karash was in the darkest corner of the shuttle, having shut himself in his shell once again. Jae has been sitting next to him, and Joamer was leaning against the pilot door. Mox began thinking about his recent achievements. Nothing... got a slicer certified, and got few medals, but that's it... Mox thought, getting sad And Heliwer... he's a Senior Sergeant already...

Mox began to feel angry about how he fails so far in his VE career. He set himself a new goal, gain a promotion of any kind. A new medal would be nice, but if he could, he would change them all for a promotion, at least up to what Heliwer achieved. That piece of shit... man, I could really kill him right now... Mox immediately stopped thinking about, as he did not wish to venture into that part of his mind. Everyone has one, right? Their crazy side... or maybe it's this squad, hence the name... Crazy RAIDERS... Mox began thinking about the name What else could you name this? Man... Mox sighed as, once again he looked around the shuttle, as he thought about every in this squad.

As time went by Mox took out his Datapad, trying to be confident that Joamer would not hate him for doing so. Mox fiddled with it for a moment, before going in. He was sure this Datapad was connected somehow to Joamer, and that he shouldn't do anything on it, that Joamer could think of as traitorous. Which could be anything, really... Mox checked through all the option, noticing that it was quite advanced... If I wanted, I could shut myself off Joamer... if he's connected to it. Mox put it back in his pocked, and grabbed the nearest parachute. Wow... we're going to jump off this... it's going to be fun young man smiled at the thought of falling through nothingness for over 20 minutes...

---------------------------------------------------

“Ok, boys and girls... HALO time!” Joamer exclaimed, putting his helmet on.

Looking down he began checking all the gear he had locked into place around his person. Most of it was stored in the pack strapped to his chest, he had already gone over it carefully while he was loading it. His particle magnum, and twin saber knives were placed on the outside edges so he could quickly get to them if need be. His Armat M41-A Pulse Rifle was strapped to his chest between the pack and his chestplate. On his back was the advanced parachute that was designed for HALO jumps.

Looking up as the pilot turned on the comm system, "Jump in thirty seconds, making turn now. Entering atmosphere, prepare for some chop as we quickly descend."

"For those of you who have been asleep the past ten hours, I'll go over this again." Joamer said as he stood at the entrance ramp of the shuttle. "This is a combat drop, our shuttle has dropped out of hyperspace closer than most sane pilots like doing. At full speed, they perform a one hundred eighty degree turn as we enter the atmosphere. Dropping quickly to the predetermined altitude they kick the engines on full as they begin to pull back out. We have a ten second window to jump before the shuttle begins moving again, those that are the slow ones in the group are going to be sore in the morning."

"Compartment pressurized, opening main door now. Drop in fifteen seconds, standby main engines." The pilot's voice said suddenly.

"Remember, we have twenty minutes of free fall. Use your HUD, the landing coordinates are programmed into it. Good luck and god speed!" Joamer said as he felt the shuttle's main engines kick to full burn. A moment later as the momentary weightlessness hit everyone he simply floated out of the shuttle.

He could not see their reactions to this, but he would of hoped maybe one of them had reached out to grab him. Feeling gravity grab hold of him again he spun his body so his head was straight down. Locking his arms tight to his sides, he locked his legs in place as his speed indicator began climbing rapidly.

He could not hear the air currents flowing over him due to the sound proofing he had done to his helmet just for this occasion, but he could feel them beginning to buffet him off course slightly. Looking down he noticed he had been dropping for twenty seconds now, his indicator read ninety one meters a second. Three hundred twenty two kilometers an hour. My gods, we are moving. The voice in his head said breathlessly. Problem is we just jumped out of a perfectly good shuttle, and the ground does not like us.

Part of him wanted to spin around and look back at his squad, his saw everyone's location beacon on his HUD behind him spaced out every few hundred yards. He knew however from training, and his own personal experience moving much at this speed usually tore something off. Under his left arm he could feel the small bundle that housed Lurk, instinctively he squeezed it closer to his body as for a moment he imagined it being ripped free and spiraling away from him.

Calming himself slowly he realized Lurk was still very much strapped to his side. Opening the frequency he shared with Jaenna he heard a suddenly screaming. After a moment the dampners kicked on as her voice came back within range, "Jae, you alright over there?" He said carefully as his ears were still ringing.

"WOOOHOOOO!" Her voice shouted back to him after a few moments. "We need to do this more often, I've missed this!"

Glancing down at the chrono he noticed he had been dropping for nearly twenty minutes now. Gods, how did I lose track of the time like that. He said to himself.

Watching the location beacon he noticed he was off course by a few hundred feet. He knew he had no time to adjust correctly so he would have to fore-go the nice water landing and meet the hard merciless ground face to face. His body knew what to do, he just knew he would be sore in a few hours since a low opening meant a higher speed than most landings.

Two thousand feet, in three seconds spread body out to decrease speed. Two seconds later deploy shoot and brace for impact. The words of his old teacher came back to him as he did just as instructed.

He felt the shoot grab hold of him after he had reduced speed, looking down he picked out what he hoped was a soft landing spot. Unfortunately the chute was designed to reduce speed to a point, but keep you moving right below the point where things began snapping into pieces. They had set up a true combat drop, and that meant getting on the ground fast after you reached the correct altitude.

Bending his knees a second before he felt his feet touch the ground he allowed his legs to slip out from under him as he tucked into a roll. The chute was also specially designed to detached at ten feet above the ground, so it would not get caught and wrapped around the user.

Coming to a stop he ignored his body protesting at being moved as he detached both his packs and dropped them to the ground. Reaching in he grabbed his particle magnum and began scanning the area, the dusk filled shadows of late afternoon filled the small clearing he had landed in. From his own senses, and the small scanners built into his suit he detected nothing large in the surrounding area. Though, that did not mean something was not watching him and just not moving. The infrared was useless right now due to this planets annoying tendency of sucking in the heat of the day and slowly releasing it.

Sighing slowly he looked up through the small clearing as he saw the small shapes of his squad coming in closer. Thankfully he noted most of them had kept close enough to their course to land in the water. Hitting the ground during a true combat drop always hurt, no matter how many times you had done one. Picking up his pack he went over and untangled his parachute, he knew he had a few minutes before everyone was on the ground. The meeting place was only a hundred yards away, so at least he had landed fairly close.

The hours that had passed did so rather quickly. The woman had been lost within her own mind, settling into the nice, quiet place while she waited for the coming signal to jump. Her mind had always been a place to seclude herself in. It had always been her safe place, surrounded by a thick wall of fog created by the spice she would smoke every day. Now, though, the wall had thinned, allowing more in. It wasn't as quiet anymore, wasn't as nice. Yet she continued to retreat into that little place whenever she needed to in order to pass time. Jae needed her quiet time, and even if it wasn't as quiet as she would like, the few hours the rest of the shuttle trip had allowed her was just enough.

As she opened her eyes from her faux-slumber, the sea-foam things were met with the sight of Joamer standing, seemingly preparing for something. His lips were moving but Jae wasn't yet completely back in the plane of existence. With a yawn, the dead butt of her lungblaster falling from tired lips, she stood and moved her head from side to side, releasing the pressure in the form of soft cracks. She shook herself out then, getting the feeling back into her arms and legs. Apparently, her faux-slumber had been a bit deeper than she had thought.

With another yawn she grabbed her bag, her weapons - her trusty Treppus-IIs, her DC-15 and her Starslasher - and strapped everything to herself. While she made sure everything was secure she heard Joamer going over the drop yet again. These kids should know how to HALO... The thought that some of them may not irked her a bit but the small bit of spice she had smoked kept her words in check as she continued to check her gear and herself. Finally, she strapped herself into the parachute and stepped into line with everyone else. A smile found its way to her still tired lips, bringing a glitter to her eyes. Lets just do this, already. It was something akin to excitement...

The floor disappeared from beneath the squad.

It was surreal... the feeling of falling into nothingness. Even as the wind from fall began to buffet the woman, the smile remained, the feeling of weightlessness enticing a small snort of laughter to erupted from between her lips. It was something she was used to, having dropped like this before. The fear of breaking herself if she landed incorrectly was hidden and locked away by the pure adrenaline that rushed through her veins. Hell, the woman even had a hard time keeping an eye on the blips in her HUD that pointed out where her squad mates were.

The joy, the adrenaline, the pure fun continued to rise and boil in her body until finally her mouth opened wide and a shout came forth. "WHOO HOOOOOO! We need to do this more often! I've missed this!" No longer was her voice, nor her mind, groggy from her faux-slumber. The woman was wide awake now, falling through the gathered atmospheres, reaching terminal velocity as her body refused to touch the ground for another fifteen minutes or so.

It was only the sound of a soft alarm in her helmet that brought her from her joyful, hypnotized state. She focused her eyes on the blip that was blinking rapidly, signaling that someone was going off course. Once she noticed it was Joamer who seemed to be going off, she clicked open her com and sighed. "Looks like Joamer will be landing away from us. Be careful, stay on target. Take up arms right when you land. Secure the perimeter to make sure nothing tries to eat us."

The last leg of the drop went by quickly. As soon as her HUD signaled for her to release the 'chute, she did so and waited until the 'chut detached at ten feet from the water to point her legs straight down, toes pointed and her arms at her side. The feeling of her feet striking the water was hard and sent a shock through her entire body. Luckily, the new SCOPE armor the squad sported was water proof and allowed them to dive into the water safely to complete the drop.

Water filled her vision around the visor, bubbles flowing up and around her as she continued to plummet from the force of the drop. Finally, she felt he water take over her and she swung her arms out and pushed them down again, propelling herself up towards the surface again. The small amount of oxygen the armor held allowed her to continue breathing as she swam to the surface. Finally, her vision broke the line of water and she saw the others either landing at that moment or coming up from the water as well.

"Well that was fun..." She chuckled and began to tread water for a few minutes, making sure everything she had strapped her body was still there. As soon as she confirmed she still had all of her equipment, she clicked on her com again. "RAIDERS, report. How did you guys do?"

As the string of reports came in, she nodded and began to swim towards the shore. Once there she climbed out of the water and drew her DC-15, holding it up at her shoulder as she trotted towards where her HUD had signaled the meeting point. "RAIDERS, secure the perimeter. Joamer, hurry up and get yer ass over here. We need to set up camp and get to work."

"I'm coming, I'm coming." The reply was couple with a few grunts of exertion. The man was probably busy climbing through the dense flora to get to the meeting point.

Jae sighed and shook her head, chuckling softly. "Dusk, Karash. Go meet with him, make sure he gets here, safe. Whiskey, Heliwer, keep the perimeter tight with me. We can't relax until Joa is here."

‘She is a complete liability, she can rationalise it all she likes but that does not make it right. It’ll all end in tears and you’ll be the one left to clean up the blood and guts. I don’t know what hold she has over our glorious SL but it all combines to add up to disaster; You are not going to let that happen.’

“She is better with it; perhaps it is a necessary evil.” Karash was falling through the air, an entire world was rapidly approaching him but his mind was still stuck on his talk with Jaenna.

‘You talking to yourself is a necessary evil. If her problems are so severe they require that level of control then she should not be in charge of an animal let alone an entire squad. Her issues will have consequences for the entire squad. She ships up or she ships out.’

“I suppose it’s the right thing to do...” The medic was unsure of what to do and that showed in the weakness of his voice.

There was no longer any time to think as a siren was going off in Karash’s head, for a moment her thought he had snapped again. The water was now just seconds away and he was forced to contort his body into the shape that was needed to survive, once again he was dangerously close to death but for once he was not bothered.

‘Brace yourself.’ Those were the medic’s last thoughts as he plunged into, the probably cold, waters. He had never been a strong swimmer but his armour was stopping him from getting wet and he could at least breathe. After plunging to a considerable depth Karash began to force himself back to the surface and after another short time he broke the water line.

“After a while they all begin to look the same. I wonder if we will die on this one?” The Senior Sergeant gave him opinion about the planet he saw but no one could have heard it.

“RAIDERS, report. How did you guys do?” The voice of Jae rang in the squads ears.

“Well I just fell from the sky, landed in a puddle and I could still quite possibly drown. Other than that I am perfectly fine and ready for action.” Karash’s response was surly as ever but no longer got a response.

The swim was a surprisingly easy one, perhaps this was going to be the easy mission that the RAIDERS had been waiting for; this did seem unlikely as Karash had been waiting for more than three years. The climb out of the water was slightly more embarrassing as the ground provided no resistance and repeatedly allowed him to just fall back into the water; the very ground appeared to be mocking him. Finally Karash dragged himself onto the land and laid there like a gutted fish that had been thrown into the dirt.

‘Seems to be rather peaceful, I suppose this will a fairly safe place to repair the squad. They never could cope without you.’

“You were planning on leaving just a few hours ago.” The medic retorted.

‘I was not, you may not like it, and you might not like them. But they need you.’

“Dusk, Karash. Go meet with him; make sure he gets here, safe.” Once again Jae’s voice appeared and gave orders.

Karash was not very far from where Joamer was but a deep feeling of unease suddenly ran through him. He put it down to the fact that he had been paired with Dusk, the two of them had never really gotten on but they had never really interacted; the medic decided to press on without the Private.

‘There is someone there.’ Karash drew his weapon and waited whatever foe was about to emerge from the thick flora that surrounded him. ‘This will either kill you or embarrass you eternally.’

OOC:
I have not read through this so there are probably lots of mistakes. If there are any major ones let me know.
I have assumed that the person who will emerge is either Joamer or Dusk. Do as you will.

As the time crept closer and closer to jump time, Heliwer kept getting more and more nervous.  He had a fairly rational reason why he was scared of dropping from a very high height. You wouldn’t know it from looking at him, but he was a runt when he was a kid. Very small, scrawny, and not really tough. His father wasn’t really the model father. He would beat up his son, make him fight with knives and blunt weapons against kids twice his size, all that kind of stuff. But the big thing that scared the crap out of young Heliwer was the day his father decided to teach him how to use a parachute. He pushed his son off of the tallest building they could find as soon as the parachute was strapped on, and he was expected to know how to do it without any kind of training. He got three quarters of the way down before he pulled the right cord. From that day onwards, he never went near parachutes or wanted to go near tall places unless needed to.

He felt a hand rest on his shoulder and he began to calm down, turning to smile at Xylonia. Of course, this moment was interrupted by the floor dropping out of under the RAIDERS. Heliwer’s heart leaped into his mouth as he tumbled around while in the air. Xy made her way over to him and eventually managed to turn him around so that he was right side up. As soon as this happened, however, his HUD blared that he had to pull the ‘chute. Closing his eyes, he grabbed the cord and yanked, feeling himself get jerked back as the ‘chute deployed. It took less then a minute before he landed on the ground next to the female RAIDER. “RAIDERS, report. How did you guys do?" Came the voice of Jaenna.

“Well, got scared shitless cause I hate parachutes and hate falling from high heights.” Replied the senior sergeant. He heard Xylonia give her report and everyone else report in.

"RAIDERS, secure the perimeter. Joamer, hurry up and get yer ass over here. We need to set up camp and get to work."

"I'm coming, I'm coming."

The squad leader sounded out of breath. Most likely he landed a ways away from the landing point.

"Dusk, Karash. Go meet with him, make sure he gets here, safe. Whiskey, Heliwer, keep the perimeter tight with me. We can't relax until Joa is here."

“Well, you heard her.” He grunted. “Let’s go to work.”

Smothered in the calm of darkness, Dusk ignored Joamer as he explained the jump. It was mostly a re-cap of what he already knew. Opening his eyes, Dusk stood rolling his shoulders and popping his neck. He gripped one of the bars that lined the walls and roof. He remebered the procedures, the traing, and the sims. But in each of those he never got to have any real fun.

The weightlessness was expected, the private pushed away from the shuttle quickly. Hoping he could get room before hitting terminal. He cleared his squad and checked his speed. 'Good, not at terminal yet. I still have time.

Pulling in his arms, Dusk began doing a few flips. The rush of air he could hear outside his helmet caused his adrenalin levels to spike. The trooper slowly extended his arms and got into proper drop position. Checking the timer till the alarm telling him to open the shoot, it read that it was only three minutes till touch down.

The alarm went off, "Here goes nothing." Dusk said, pulling the cord deploying his shoot. He fell for an other 50 feet, and at 10 he detatched. Plunging into the cool water, bubbles and water fluries filled his visor. Taking a quick breath, the private shot towards the suface. Once above water, The private tread water as he watched the rest of the squad land.

Seeing a new mark appear, Dusk began swimming for shore. Pulling himself onto the banks, he checked his HUD for the closest squad member. Seeing them a little to the south-east. "Dusk, Karash. Go meet with him. Make sure he gets here, safe. Whisey, Heliwer..." He droned the woman out after his orders were given.

'Karash really, Karash! I barely know him and hardly kike him, and I doubt if the feeling isn't mutual.

Drawing his twin EE-3s, Dusk headed in Joa direction. Occasionaly having to cut through the denser foliage, he slowly made it towards Karash. Coming out into a clearing, the private was staring down a barrel belonging to a certain medic.
"Dusk, what the hell are you doing? Trying to sneek up on me. I might of shot you." Karash stated angrly. "Aren't you supposed to be finding Joamer or somthing?"
"Yeah, but we're supposed to work together. I know I don't like you, and that you don't like me eaither. But we'll watch each other or we might end up dead, understand?."
"Let's get a move on then, come along." Karash stated heading into the brush.

He stood quietly in the shadow of a tree, his dark armor hiding him in the failing light. He had removed his helmet, before slipping on his single-eye HUD device he enjoyed using. It gave one eye all the information his helmet usually did, but allowed him better vision. Plus there was just something about your own night vision that allowed you to see things a light enhanced display missed. His strill Lurk was sitting quietly on his shoulder, her head cocked slightly to the side as she watched the spectacle twenty yards away from them.

"In fighting in not a new development in the squad, old girl. However, not trusting your fellow troopers is. This is going to be a problem." He whispered quietly as he began moving silently through the forest towards two of his troopers. Walking for a few minutes he heard one of them moving around causing enough noise to heard four hundred yards away. He was glad he had not started shouting for him to show himself, if he had he would probably end up being shot.

Deciding not to temp fate he stepped into the small clearing Dusk and Karash had found and cleared his throat. Half a second later both troopers turned and dropped to their knees, their rifles coming up a moment later. He noticed both of them hesitate for longer than an instant before they dropped their rifles and stood back up.

"How long you been following us?" Dusk said as he walked closer to Joamer, luckily the young man kept his eyes moving as he surveyed the unknown area. Karash simply stood there watching everything, and no one it seemed.

"Long enough. Come on, let's get back to the others before someone does something to tick off Jae." Joamer said as he turned and walked back the way they had come.

The minutes passed slowly as they finally located the rest of the squad. Part of him grumbled at how camp was already being setup, another admired the efficiency in which it was being done. He saw Jaenna directing someone to place a portable tent in one area, walking up he said to everyone "Belay that for now, we are in hostile territory on the edge of a lake. For one, there is still plenty of light to use and I know everyone just loves those night marches we are so fond of. Besides, tomorrow morning we need to get a early start if we want to get up that cliff face that is eight klicks away from here."

He saw Jaenna open her mouth to argue, but closed it a moment later as she remembered just how high up they needed to climb. He saw her nod, but grimace as she motioned for everyone to begin packing up. He saw Dusk and Karash standing next to him watching, after a moment he motioned for them to go help. Shaking his head slightly as they duo walked away to be of some use, he pulled out his datapad and began charting a course that would take them to what he hoped was the least suicidal path up the cliff.

"You know you could of let them rest just for a bit." Jaenna said as she walked up a few minutes later. Her pack slung on her back and her weapons neatly arrayed around her. Thankfully he noticed everyone was packing light in the weapons department, and it appeared everyone had at least one bladed weapon of some type.

"We've gotten lazy in moving during the night, the last few campaigns have let them think just because it gets dark it's time to rest. Besides, you know the cliff we are facing tomorrow. It won't be that challenging for us, or whoever is experienced in climbing but it will still take the better part of the day. I would rather be up and over before nightfall, hanging from your fingertips is not something for the inexperienced." Joamer said as he removed part of the course and added in another part.

It was true he had been letting his leadership slip over the past few weeks, he had issues he had to work out by himself and he knew Jaenna could handle it. Now though, with his squad deep in enemy territory, or at least territory that was possibly hostile he needed to be in the here and now. Not off in some deep part of his mind working out issues of his psyche.

"I'm sorry for the way I've acted during the last few weeks, I chose you as my second because I know you can handle things. However, I am the one ultimately responsible for what happens to everyone here, and that includes you. When things go wrong I stand first between them and the squad." Joamer said as he looked over at her, their relationship had changed many times over the years. Now it seemed they were part friend, and part rival. He knew she wanted the squad back, and she knew he believed she was not yet ready. The stress of being the top person in command was something she was not yet ready for, he could see it. He knew, however, someday she would step up again and be ready. "In the end, the means are justified. You'll see why I do what I do eventually, Jae. For now, can you stop Mox from trying to kill Dusk? I think he hijacked a chocolate bar or something from him."

Looking up at the sky he marked the position of the failing sun and the rising moon. He would give them ten more minutes before they pushed out. Hopefully they would make the cliff face before sunrise, then they could rest. Tomorrow was going to be a long, dangerous day. He would go first, to set the line for the others to follow. He just hoped they all made it up, it was a dangerous philosophy of learn fast or die. In a job such as theirs, it was often the only way to keep them alive in the end.

OOC:
Next person to post, can do the argument between Mox and Dusk if you want. I added it in just cause it came to me suddenly. Also get us moving on the night march, I'm sure SOMEONE is going to complain about walking. So get to it.

“Look what have you done to my arm!!!” Mox shouted at Dusk as he pointed his vibroknife at the private.

It was nightfall and some people were becoming annoyed that they did not make a camp for the night. Although Mox didn't openly show his own disgruntlement, he was more hostile. But no small thing could anger Mox to point he would consider attacking his own squad mates. Now he was openly threatening Dusk with his vibroknife who accidentally broke his cybernetic arm.

“I didn't mean to!” Dusk exclaimed as he backed off, his rifle raised.

“I don't give a frak!” Mox yelled as he was about to throw himself at Dusk, only to be stopped by Jaenna.

“Whoah, whoah... calm down!” Jaenna shouted into Mox's helmet. Mox laughed.

“Well, look who's talking...” Mox said.

Mox took a few steps backwards, and Jae sighed.

“Anyway, what about my arm?” Mox he sheathed his vibroknife, and grabbed his cybernetic arm.

“I guess you should talk to Joamer about... he has one as well.” Jaenna said as she stared into Mox's visor.

Mox ignored the advise and sat down on a fallen tree. He then attempted to fix his cybernetic arm, though in reality he had no idea what to do. He never trained in mechanics, being more interested in the software side of technology. But he did not trust Joamer either, afraid that he would modify his arm. “Call me paranoid...” Mox muttered to himself, unhearable through the helmet.

“Mox, unless you want to have a swinging useless arm by your side, I advise you to go Joamer.” Jaenna pressed on.

Mox glared at Jaenna, without moving his head though, so noone could see it. “Very well...”

-----------------------------------------------------

“How long 'til the climbing part?” Heliwer said with a bored voice.

It has been two hours of march, with no rest. Mox didn't mind marching, though it was nerve wrecking, walking through a dark forest, having to listen to every single sound coming from the forest. His cybernetic arm got fixed – “Lucky you, that we brought some replacement parts” – and Mox was able to hold his DC-17M. I wish I could bring my frag mod... would make killing the beasts much easier. Mox thought as he heard another crack from the trees.

Having Dusk at his side did not help either, and made Mox even more nervous. He tried to stay away from him, afraid he would break his cyberarm again. As they moved forward, Mox couldn't but feel that he was watched all the time. With Joamer at the front of the squad, he was sure it wasn't him, but Mox was still feeling restless.

As they moved on, some troopers were becoming more angry (Heliwer), or edgy (Dusk). Although Joamer was still maintaining the control of the squad, Mox couldn't shake the feeling that he is losing respect from his subordinates. So the next in line is Jaenna... and probably Karash as her ASL.... At this point he wondered if Jae knew of his past. Of Thyveck... Before now Mox has never paid attention to this issue, but now he began thinking about it. If she knew, she would obviously be more hostile towards him. Doesn't look like anyone knows anyway... Mox thought as he surveyed across the squad. So... is it just Joamer and Brightstar? If it is... and Jae managed to somehow take over... then I'm safe! Mox thought as he began to imagine what it would be like without Joamer.

Suddenly Joamer signaled the squad to stop. “Movement.”

Mox looked forwards and attempted to see what's going on.

“Don't move.” Joamer said, trying to remain motionless.

“What is it?” Jaenna asked, being at the far end of the group.

Suddenly two beasts could be seen, fighting, about 40 meters away from RAIDERS, smashing trees and brushes alike.

“This.... does not look good.” Mox exclaimed as he awaited orders.

The battling beasts were getting closer to RAIDERS. One had long legs and was attempting to slice his opponent. The other one was much quicker, and more feline. What are these creatures???

The two creatures before the RAIDERS were immersed in what was a battle for survival, the loser would be feasted on and the winner would have a very full stomach. Most of the squad just kept moving, they did not have the time to watch nor did they want to have to deal with the blood thirsty winner. However Mox did not move and he stood perfectly still watching the two creatures; it was unclear whether he was paralyzed by fear or just fascinated by the rare sight they were witnessing.

“Come on, we don’t have time for this.” Jae ordered rather impatiently.

Just then the large insect like creature let out a blood curdling cry as it struck the feline creature, then, in a flash, the feline roared back into life and leapt at his opponent’s neck. After a short period of horrific screams the large insect died in a pool of its own blood. The feline stood over its prey, panting heavily.

“For heaven’s sake, let’s move before that thing decides it wants us for dessert!” Karash whispered.

“Wooooo! That was impressive!” Mox shouted like an excited school child.

The large cat turned its head inquisitively and roared. Most of the squad jumped into whatever cover they could find; Mox did not. It was now clear that his excitement had turned to fear as the monstrous cat was now only moments away from ripping the Private into bite size chunks. It all happened at such a speed that not one of the RAIDERS was able to draw a weapon before the creature was nose to nose with Mox, its breathe was forming condensation on Mox’s armour.

‘Another RAIDER bites the dust.’

The rapid speed had slowed and now time moved in slow motion. The creature raised its claw and smashed it into Mox, who fell like a ragdoll. Looming over its next victim the cat let out another roar before it would devour the helpless RAIDER. It looked down at Mox and growled; it looked from side to side and then it fell. Gasping for air the monstrous cat became a helpless kitten. Writhing in agony the cat shuddered and died.

“Mox, are you alive?” Joamer asked from his position of relative safety.

“Umm... Errr... I am alright, I think it is dead.” The audibly shaken trooper responded.

The squad emerged from hiding and slowly approached Mox and the corpse of the cat. It was quite an impressive sight; it commanded their respect.

“Go check him out Karash.” Joamer ordered after lowering his weapon.

Karash looked down and smiled, “It is dead, looks like it died from exhaustion. Poor thing, went out with one hell of a bang though. It’s a shame really looks to me like it was in the prime of its life. It’s probably a... ”

“I meant is Mox ok.” Joamer said shaking his head.

“Oh... He is fine, the armour took most of the impact. Though he is lucky I don’t shoot him myself.” The medic turned to the still downed trooper, “Shouting like a school girl, sheer dumb luck... bloody stupid... should have let it...” Karash’s voiced trailed away.

“Little help?” Mox asked as he put out his arms.

Heliwer and Whiskey consented and helped the Private to his feet but both were clearly giggling. In fact the entire squad seemed to find the event amusing as they continued their march into the darkness. Karash looked back and saw the two fallen beasts, they presented an ill omen. This was meant to be an easy mission, with no problems.

‘Better hope we are the biggest monsters on this damned planet.’

The medic began to run as he had to catch up with the rest of the squad.

Jae had watched it play out in silence.

There was nothing else she could have done from the place she had taken behind a large tree. Everything had slowed down, moving in slow motion. The woman was forced to watch was as the alien feline smacked down one of her troopers as if he were nothing more than a bag of small rocks and mud. She could feel her stomach knot, her blood burn and her mind scream at her to move forward and help him. Though every time she tried to move, it was if she had run into a invisible force that refused to let her move.

Finally, as the beast fell to its side, the moments caught up with reality. Afterimages whizzed by her vision as everything went back to normal speed. The invisible force broke and it felt as though she was thrust forward as she took the first step, stumbling over one of the tree's roots. She was silent as she watched Mox get to his feet and just barely joined in on the laughter that overtook the squad as they seemed to all recount what exactly had just gone on.

"Alright everyone, lets keep going." Joamer's voice rose through the laughter before he turned and continued on, the rest of the squad following.

As Karash rushed by her to catch up, it was only then that Jae had realized just how much she hated the fact that Joamer had forced them to move. Before the sudden appearance of the creatures her mind had been so wrapped around the fact that if they were to rest for the night they'd be safer. But after the attack... Now she wasn't so sure. The woman wasn't only unsure about the safety of everyone but her general distaste for the order to night march began to boil even more bile in her stomach. With each step she took her lips twisted from that gentle smile into a grimace, her good eye locked on the back of Joamer's head.

Jae had been so sure that resting for the night would be safer, that they'd be better off. How could it not be safe when every other report that had come back from the plethora of earlier scouting missions on this planet were clean of Rebels and other known enemies. There hadn't even been any reports or notes about native settlements. The woman had been so ready to protest Joa's decision on marching. She had been withholding her argument for time's sake, for the sake of her position and her mood. Though now... as she looked back on it, she was mad at herself for not thinking about the fauna, for not taking more caution. The grip she had on her Starslasher tightened as she fought a rough growl from her throat.

It was a fluke... It was a gorram fluke! Any other time I would have been right!

Had it not been for the sound of a breaking stick coming from behind her, Jae would have spent the entire night dwelling on what had happened. Instead, she spun around, Starslasher raised and eye narrowed. It was that moment that she had cursed the fact she had removed her helmet and attached it to her belt.

"Stay where you are!" Her voice came across in a snarl, hoping that it would catch the attention of the other RAIDERS, though as she heard other weapons clicking into into readiness from behind her a smirk drifted across her lips.

The woman the entire squad had their weapons pointed at stood completely still, though not in fear. Instead, her face was bright with a stoic confidence. The attire she wore was a uniform, formal yet unknown to any of the RAIDERS who were glaring at her with their weapons ready. That is except for Joamer.

His voice broke through the tight concentration Jae had on the unknown woman. "Lower your weapons." The command seemed to fall on deaf ears as everyone kept their assorted guns and blasters and pistols raised. "Lower them. Now!"

"Do you know her?" Jae asked, her face twisted into an expression of confusion, distaste and concentration. It was a terrible mixture.

Joamer stepped forward and wrapped his hand around the barrel of Jae's Starslasher and lowered it for her. "Yes I do." As he said this the rest of the squad lowered their weapons and were now looking between the woman and Joamer as if both of them had more than one head.

With a loud grumble Jae stepped forward and grabbed the SL's shoulder, forcing him to turn around and face her. "What the hell is going on here, Joa?"

"I don't know, yet. Let me find out." He shrugged off Jae's hand and stepped up to the woman who still had that same stoic confidence plastered to her face. "What is it, Pennile?"

For a moment the woman, apparently named Pennile, was silent, then she shoved her hand into a pocket and fished out a datapad and held it in her palm as an offering to Joamer. "It's been found."

Slowly, Joamer reached out and picked up the datapad, clicked it on, read the unknown information for a few moments, then sighed as his hands began to shake. "Right..."

"I've already contacted your superiors. You've been cleared."

"Right..." He turned around to face the squad after placing the datapad back into his pocket. His eyes were down, glazed and his hands continued to shake slightly. With a deep breath he looked back up and caught each of the RAIDERS' eyes. "I have to leave. Jae you're in charge now. Congrats." With that he reached up to his left shoulder and unhinged the orange pauldron that silently stated his position and tossed it to Jae.

The one-eyed woman caught it with ease but continued to stare at Joamer. "Where in all the hells are you going?"

"Can't say. Good luck to you all. I'll you again... eventually." With that he turned and walked off into the brush with the woman. Minutes later the sound of an engine powering up echoed through the trees and not a second later the squad could see the light of the small transport as it lifted back into the atmosphere.

Silence came over the RAIDERS as they all stood, looking up at the sky, confusion thick in their eyes.

"Welp. Just another strange thing to add to my diary when I get home." Karash's sarcasm blasted through the silence, causing a soft chuckle to roll through the remaining squad. "Time to move on then?"

Jae didn't want to believe it, but as she turned around to face the medic she could have sworn there was something similar to disdain in his eyes. She looked to each of the others, and saw something similar though not as obvious. "Uh... yeah. Let's get moving." The woman was still surprised, having been caught off guard by the sudden promotion. But as soon as she holstered her Starslasher for a moment in order to remove the blue pauldron and replace it with the orange one, happiness struck her heart and a smile reappeared on her lips. The woman took a deep breath, grabbed her gun from it's holster once more and squared her shoulders. "Alright, RAIDERS. Lets move. Getting way too dark now. Wouldn't want Moxxie boy to get ravaged by another kitty now would we?"

The woman was Squad Leader again. The happiness that ran through her as she turned and signaled for everyone to keep moving was obvious in the way she smiled. Though deep down there was a fear. A fear that the squad that was once more under her command didn't want her in that position...

Okay. We've said our goodbyes to Joamer, sort of, and we are all on the move again.

It happened so quickly, as soon as the animal was standing above Mox, Dusk had his blasters up. Then suddenly it dropped dead. He was a little shaken up by the encounter. "Stay were you are!" Jannea shouted. Hearing this, the private whipped around pistol in hand. The mystery woman ordered them to stand down, but who gives a hell what a random person says. Once Joamer aproched her, indicating to stand down, did the young man holster his weapon. 'Who the hell is this. What, is she some AHC big shot.' Dusk thought irritated. From the context of their talk there was one conclusion. Dusk started forward as Joamer removed his orange pauldren, but was stopped by a hand on his shoulder. Looking back, he saw Heliwer shake his head.

No. No, no, no. He can't leave, I was just getting to know him. Dusk fumed in his head as he recalled his memories with Joa. There weren't many outside of squad related things, but he was crushed to see a mentor go. 'Joamer's gone. And that little fraker is smiling. I was getting ready to start to like you. But your reaction to one of your closest friends leaving, and your laughing. You have lost my respect you bitch.

He opened the bottle of his pills and popped a few in his mouth. It was getting dark and he wasn't about to be caught un-aware again. The world around him exploded into a rainbow of colors as the pills effect kicked in. He could now see the heat rising from the two creatures bodies. And he could now see through light foliage. Small insects crawled around under the brush. Drawing his EE-3's he moved on with the rest of the squad.

With the sudden departure of Joamer, the whole squad were in varying states of confusion. Heliwer was having mixed feelings about it: on the one hand, he and the squad leader never really saw eye to eye on a lot of things and usually butted heads. However, since Thyveck, the sergeant had begun to stand by his commanding officer and trust him more. He also was both unsure and glad that Jaenna was now in command, partly nervous about her drug usage, and partly on their own wierd friendship.

The squad began to slowly continue to walk through to the destination. As the darkness began to set in, their helmets were switched on and continued to walk in stunned silence. The big trooper broke it by whispering up to the new squad leader. "So...." he began. "I'm gonna say it cause I know it's what's on everyone's mind. You are the new squad leader. You're gonna have to pick an ASL from one of us, and as far as I know, only Doc and I are above sergeant. So........"

"What are you getting at?" Jaenna asked, a hint of annoyance creeping through.

He sighed heavily. "Just make sure you make a good choice..... Ma'am."

At the least the brief interruption of silence had let the squad talk some. Dusk and Mox struck up a conversation about something that Heliwer did not interested in overhearing, and Karash was seemingly saying something to the squad leader. This left the sergerant and the other female RAIDER at the back of the group. He let out a deep breath and slung his rifle on to his back, then drawing a revolver with his left hand and wrapping his right arm around Xylonia's waist. "Well, I hope we don't get jumped by any beasties."

Being helped up, Mox started laughing. He was laughing for many things. His stupidity, Karash's comments, and his luck. How could this beast just... die? Mox thought Hmmm... I'll holonet it when we get back...

“Alright everyone, lets keep moving.” Joamer's voice sounded through.

RAIDERS moved on. Mox wondered if they're going to meet more beasts. Having been this close to a huge cat With spikes everywhere and surviving with not even a scratch, made Mox feel great. The only thing that could make him even happier was...

“I have to leave. Jae you're in charge now. Congrats.” Joamer said after talking with a strange woman.

“Where in all the hells are you going?” Jae responded, with surprise in her voice

“Can't say. Good luck to you all. I'll found you again... eventually.”

With these words Joamer turned around and followed the mysterious woman. Of all these words, only the first sentence made sense to Mox. The words kept floating around in the man's mind, unable to find an exit. The news came so quickly, and so unexpectedly that Mox did not register them at first. But the shock quickly wore off and Mox finally understood what happened. Joamer was leaving, leaving the RAIDERS, leaving Mox. Suddenly Mox wanted to dance, his mind and heart filled with happiness. He did not know where Joamer went, he did not care either. He was finally safe, he didn't have to be afraid no more.

Barely stopping himself, Mox looked around. Only Jaenna didn't have her helmet on, making it hard to distinguish emotions between the troopers. One thing was clear, everyone, everyone was shocked. No one expected this turn of events. And I was thinking about this exact situation just moments ago....

“Alright, RAIDERS. Lets move. Getting way too dark now. Wouldn't want Moxxie boy to get ravaged by another kitty now would we?”

His past left behind, and hopefully soon forgotten. Mox followed the new SL. As the squad moved on, now without Joamer, random thought kept popping into Mox's head. So I guess Jae's the squad leader now. Oh well. As long as she doesn't make us take the shit I'll follow her lead. It appears she doesn't know anything at all.. Suddenly Heliwer caught up with Jaenna and talked to her.

“So... I'm gonna say it cause I know it's what's on everyone's mind. You are the new squad leader. You're gonna have to pick an ASL from one of us, and as far as I know, only Doc and I are above sergeant. So...”

“Where are you getting at?” Jaenna responded with annoyance in her voice, to Mox's relief.

“Just make sure you make a good choice... ma'am.” Heliwer finished as he sighed.

Well, the good choice obviously won't be you. Mox thought angrily I would rather have the asocial medic as my ASL then you.... As they kept on moving, Mox's anger at Dusk lowered a bit, enough to start talking to him. The time went fast, and the further match was very uneventful. Sometimes some fauna appeared, but most of the time RAIDERS either managed to avoid them, or the beasts were asleep.
--------------------------------------------

A couple of hours later they reached the cliff they were supposed to climb.

“Why couldn't there be any lakes up there? Wouldn't have to climb the freaking thing...” Mox said as he shook his head.

“Ok, RAIDERS, lets camp here 'til the morning. And then, after we're all rested, we climb!” Jaenna exclaimed. “Rover, come here.”

The droid drove up to Jae, and so the squad have gathered around him. Being trained in making camps, some more, some less, RAIDERS quickly set up a camp. Mox decided to rest in his armor, ignoring the Note-To-Self from Thyveck. He kept thinking about the tomorrow's climb. Even though he was good at, and enjoyed climbing trees, but rarely climbed flat surfaces. If he did, he usually had something to help him out, like a grappling hook, or his Jump-Boots. This time all he had was his climbing was the climbing rope. Hopefully it won't be that bad. If something happens, I can always land myself in the trees... unless I climbed too high. Mox walked into the camp, and sat down on of the free beds.

I just hope that fauna are not the only thing we encounter...

Heliwer helped set up some of the tents and got his own cot set up. The squad managed to get a good nights rest, considering that they did not get much sleep. They woke up early, most of them having woken up before dawn because they couldn’t get to sleep. The big trooper was one of those. He sat up on the edge of his cot calmly smoking several cigarettes for about an hour before deciding to get his stuff all ready for the climb that morning. Dusk began to wake up and mumbled something that was along the lines of “what the hell are you doing up this fraking early?” and tossed something at the sergeant’s head, missing by an inch. In the other two tents were the girls in one and Mox and Karash in the remaining one. The two other guys were not very excited about the arrangement, but it was either that or Mox would tent with Heliwer, which would probably result in one of them being killed come morning.

“Better to wake up early and get set up for the climb than to wake up and have to rush.” Heliwer responded. “Besides, I need to take a piss.”

He walked out of the tent, making sure to take one revolver and put it in his pants pocket. Unlike Mox, he slept with his armor off, instead sleeping in some shorts and an underarmor shirt that was just that bit small on him. The other two tents were still fairly quiet, but slight shuffling from inside told him that they were awake. He could hear the girls talking about something and his name being brought up in conversation. He shrugged it off and went over to the nearby brushes to relieve himself. As he did so, he began to think about the upcoming climb. Sure he had some experience with rock climbing, it was mandatory to get some experience in training, but he still did not like climbing all the same and was still fairly afraid of heights. He also began to think about his friendships with everyone in the squad. Coadster, probably the main person he would consider as a friend was gone. Jaenna was the new squad leader, and although the two were somewhat friendly, they did not really talk much. And Xylonia… The two had really hit it off since their last mission, becoming much closer. This left Mox and Karash. Doc was a pessimistic bastard and did not seem to like the trooper. However, you get the doc mad, he can always make sure you die by medical mishap. Mox and the big trooper did not really see eye to eye on anything, and both would kill each other given the chance. It seemed like the only logical choice for a friend now would be Dusk. They were friendly and neutral towards each other, and they didn’t really have any falling outs.

Finishing up, he headed his way back to the tent to find Dusk already set up and in his armor. Chuckling, Heliwer completed getting ready and putting on his armor before the two getting the tent broken down. In an hour, everyone was set up and ready to climb. “Ok guys,” Jaenna addressed the squad. “Let’s get started. Sooner we do, the more daylight we’ll have at the top and the less difficult it will be. Climbing in the dark is fun, but I don’t think you guys would like it.”

Xylonia glared at the rest of her squad.  Red rimmed her gray eyes and bags swelled underneath them.  Her lack of sleep was clearly evident.  All night she had kept her eyes open, watching Jaenna.  Childhood fears had embraced her mind and heart and she could not help herself.  No way in hell can I trust her.   Rubbing sleep from her eyes and slapping her cheeks to wake up, Xy started throwing on her climbing gear.

Heliwer watched her closely after he noticed her red eyes.  His calculated blue gaze and twitch in his jaw let her know that he was worried about her.  She tried to smile at him to fib and tell him she was okay, but he knew her all too well.  Jaenna started up the cliff face first to lead them.  Xy took the opportunity to distance herself from the rest of the squad.  Finding an old rotted stump, she plopped down onto it, her eyes never leaving Jaenna.

The others watched Jaenna and waiting a good amount before starting up the cliff face.  Heliwer also lingered behind and approached Xy.

“What’s going on? I can tell something is bothering you.”  Heliwer stood close to her so that their conversation would remain private.

His icy blue eyes bore into her and she shivered uncontrollably.  She smiled at the now familiar sensation, this time her smile was sincere.

She took her eyes off Jaenna finally and looked at her feet in the dirt. “I don’t want to talk about it.  Let’s just finish this mission.  The sooner it is over, the sooner I’ll be at peace.”

Every muscle in her body was as tight as a bow string, the anxiety really putting her on edge.  Her gray eyes rested upon Jaenna’s form once again, all her attention focused on the danger.  Heliwer gently laid a hand on Xy’s shoulder.  “Xy…”

“Don’t touch me!”  She stood up throwing his hand off of her.

Heliwer stared at her, shocked and slightly hurt by her reaction.  He gritted his jaw and snapped back, “Fine!”

Jaenna looked over her shoulder down at the only two remaining Raiders on the ground.  “Hey, get a move on, NOW!”

While Xy’s temper rose and she started to shake in anger, the hallucination took stronger hold on her.  Only part of what she was seeing and hearing was actually going on.  In reality, Jaenna had been watching Xylonia with much concern and had not once raised her voice at the newest trooper of Raiders.

Xy balled her hands into fists instantly and grimaced as she stared up at Jaenna.  I can’t stand this.  How could they put her in charge?  She’s on spice, constantly!  How can they not see it?  I’ll be damned if I let her get me killed.  Frakking frell.

Heliwer started up the cliff, using his anger to propel him.  Xy came up to the cliff face and did a final check on her gear making sure it truly was secure.

“Xy, get climbing.”  Jaenna glared straight down at Xylonia with her good eye, anger dripping off her like spice induced sweat.

The real Jae actually had asked, “Xy are you ok?”

“Don’t call me Xy…” she growled through clenched teeth.

Xy placed her hands against the rough stone and started pulling herself up, carefully placing each hand and foot.  Her mind still focused on Jaenna, she misplaced her foot and fell, landing right on her ass with a loud thump on the forest floor.  Everyone paused their ascent to look down at her with troubled looks.

“Xy! Stop frelling around!  Don’t make me come down there and carry your ass up!”  Jaenna almost screamed before facing the sky once more and crawling up the cliff face rather efficiently.

“Damn it Xy, I told you that you didn’t get enough rest last night.  I’m going to come help you.  I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to climb alone.  You’re obviously tired.” Jae reasoned in reality while Xy was getting up from the ground and dusting herself off. Jaenna was already repelling down the short fifteen feet she had stopped at to wait for everyone.  Her lithe form landed softly as she gently bent her knees to absorb the impact.

Dusk and Heliwer had more concerned looks on their faces as they looked down at their squad mate.

Xylonia was acting strange.  Dusk and Heliwer sort of looked at each other searching the other for answers.  Both men helplessly shrugged and looked back down at Xy.

“Any idea why she seems so pissed off at Jae?” Dusk asked.

Heliwer shook his head, “No clue man.  I’ve never seen her act this strange.”

“Do you want some help up Xylonia?” Dusk called down in a friendly tone.

Xy called back up to him, trying to hide the bitterness that was engulfing her, “No thank you.  Just a little rusty, I’ll be fine.”  She switched to whispering under her breath before muttering, “I want a new Squad Leader.  Frelling spice…”

Her state of mind leading her on down the rabbit hole, Xy was oblivious to the real Jae standing right next to her.  Jae’s mouth fell into a devastated frown as a tear started to form in her good eye.  The hand she had been reaching out to help Xy, retracted slightly as she was crestfallen.  Jae had quite clearly heard Xy’s muttering.

Closing her eyes and taking a couple of short controlled breaths to change her focus, Xy tried to switch her thoughts to the task at hand.  Once she felt slightly calmer, she started crawling up the cliff face at a steady pace, taking care to not make the same mistake again.

Once Xy reached the boys, they started to continue upward.  Jae watched Xy climb silently with a thoughtful stare.  Climbing up behind Xy she spoke loudly and clearly, although unsure if Xy would hear her, “I’ll just follow you up in case you lose your grip again Xy.”

He was slow in climbing up the rock face because he was waiting for Xylonia to get moving and did not want to leave her behind. After she started her ascent, he resumed climbing up the cliff side. The rocks were, fortunately, quite solid, and the hand and foot holds were fairly easy to get to. The only difficult part was the height. A few minutes into the climb, Heliwer’s arms started to ache at the thought of the remaining feet to go. It took all his strength to keep going. He even had to defy himself from looking down to see if the other female RAIDER was ok. He was sure that she did not get enough sleep, and he wanted to go down and make sure that she was ok. To keep himself from doing this, he told himself over and over again that Jaenna would not let anything happen to her. She was a fellow squad mate and it would not look good if on the first day of command, she lost someone.

“Fucking hell, how much longer do we have till we reach the top?” He called up. “Can’t be that much further. I’m starving!”

“Almost there.” Mox replied. “Got maybe a hundred yards or so.”

The sun was already about at the highest point in the sky, signaling noontimeish. When the squad finally made it to the top, everyone needed a rest. Dusk and Heliwer, although they had just gotten over the top, helped pull up the girls with the last of their strength. “Good work people.” Jaenna huffed as she tried to regain her breath. “Let’s take a breather. Five minutes, then we get going. Have a snack, have a drink. We need to get going to our final destination soon.”

Heliwer sat down next to Xylonia, and gently called out to the newly minted squad leader. “Can we have fifteen? I need to… take a catnap.” Very discreetly he gestured to the woman sitting next to him. The squad leader nodded. “Fifteen it is.”

Two big, powerful, yet soft hands began to massage the female RAIDER’s shoulders. “You need rest. Take a power nap. I’ll watch over you.”

She sighed audibly and leaned into the massage. “I’m sooo fraked up right now.”

A silver flask was produced and put in her hands. “It’s whiskey. Probably shouldn’t have it, but you need it. Take only a sip, then get some rest.”

The top was screwed off and the fiery amber liquid poured down her throat, quenching a bit of her thirst and making her feel better some. She just about got the top back on before crashing, head resting in the sergeant’s lap. He heard Mox began to snicker slightly, but silenced him with a drawn revolver. “That’s right. Laugh, and I’ll make you be another soulless corpse. You won’t be the first Imperial I’ve killed, and definitely not the last.”

He felt a few more eyes on him and he took a deep breath. “I was a pirate, you all know that. Fought Republicans, Imperials, Black Sun, Hutts, other Pirates, and Mandelorians. So long as I got paid, didn’t care. I only joined the Empire to kill as many Republic sons of bitches as I can.” He let out a heavy sigh. “Never really did a psych profile on me. Partly glad they did, partly glad they didn’t”

Heliwer gently stroked Xylonia’s cheek and began to let his mind wander to the ‘glory days’, and soon regretted as he began to remember all the terrible things he had done when he was a pirate.

With Heliwer's short massage and a hefty swig of whiskey, Xy passed out almost immediately.  He had eased her enough to the point where she finally felt safe.  Unfortunately, that safe feeling was short lived.  In the blackness, Xy's mother, Serci, emerged.  A red stiletto heel kicked Xy in the head.

"Get up lazy bitch." Serci's voice dripped with velvety hatred.

Xy stirred restlessly.

"Here.  This will help." The ebony haired woman knelt down holding a smoking stick of spice out to her sleeping daughter.

Xy slapped the poison away, loathing hate filling her eyes.

Serci put the stick to her lips that were painted hot pink.  "Pity.  You should really try it."  The woman grabbed Xy's jaw, staring into her eyes.  She forced the stick into Xy's mouth, her fingernails digging into Xy's cheeks, drawing blood.  Xy tried to fight her, but Serci was stronger.  Gagging and coughing on the burning smoke, her eyes stung with tears.  Serci laughed before standing up and kicking her in the stomach.  Xy tried to rise to get away, but could only manage a crawl.  Serci's laughter echoed in the barren room as she opened the door and slammed it hard as she left.  Tears flowed freely from Xy's grey eyes as the spice started to alter every feeling of every nerve in her body.

"No, not again.  I don't..." Xy's voice trailed off as she fell into to abyss of emptiness.

When she came to, he was there.  "Well hello there precious.  I do love watching you sleep.  Time to play..."

She could feel the cold steel on her throat, sliding down to her collar bone and back over shoulder before it bit into her flesh.

"Scream, precious, scream for me."

His hand slid up under her shirt as the blade continued to tear her flesh open.

She screamed out in terror and pain.  "NO!  NO! Stop it! Stop!  Stop!"  Xy's hands slapped frantically as she tried to claw herself free.

"Xy!  XY! XY!"  Heliwer was almost yelling as he gently shook Xy's thrashing sleeping body.

Xy gasped deeply for air as her eyes flew open and she found herself staring into Heliwer's cold eyes that now brought her warmth every time she looked into them.  Taking in air as she tried to keep from hyperventilating, Xy blinked repeatedly.  Heliwer held her with a hand on each of her shoulders.  His eyes searched hers carefully.  Once she looked around and saw the trees, her fellow Raiders and Heliwer again, she realized it was all a dream.  Her ragged breaths turned into sobs and she threw herself into Heliwer, wrapping her arms around his neck.  Resting her forehead on his shoulder, she cried openly.  He tightly wrapped his arms around her and whispered in her ear.

"Hey.  It's alright.  It was just a dream." He brushed her hair with one hand trying to soothe her.

Heliwer noticed Karash heading over to them after Jae leaned in and whispered words only Karash could hear.  When Karash approached, Heliwer lightly shook his head and shooed him away as discreetly as possible.  Karash stopped in his tracks and stared at Heliwer with the most unamused look on his face.  The medic trained Raider pointed at Jae then at Xy and then once more at his med kit.  Pretty sure he knew Xy better than any other Raider; Heliwer remained vigilant and motioned for Karash to leave them be, at least for the time being.  Karash rolled his eyes and sighed audibly.  He went back over to Jae and spoke to her briefly.  She gazed in Xy and Heliwer's direction momentarily before giving him a brief nod and then setting about other business.

Finally bringing her sobs to an end and gaining control of her emotional state, Xy slowly pulled away from Heliwer.  She wiped the remaining tears from her eyes and cheeks before taking a long drink of water.

After assisting her the best to his ability, Heliwer gave her a soft sincere smile as he asked, "Better?"

The auburn haired woman nodded, "Yes, I'm better now.  Thank you. We should join the others now.  I don't want to hinder our progress anymore than I have."

Jae watched them carefully as Heliwer stood up and held out a hand to help Xy to her feet.  Xy's gaze made its way to hers and froze, the fear threatening to trigger another panic attack.  Quickly she diverted her gaze back to Heliwer's rugged, but handsome face to ground herself.  Immediately the fear receded.  He was her only anchor.

“She seems to be finding comfort with him, I’d keep an eye open though as she may not be mentally secure enough to continue.” Karash whispered in the ear of the new SL, who in fact was not new just reinstated, Jae.

“OK, let me know if anything else happens.” Jae said turning her attention to other business.

‘Of course I’ll keep my eyes open ma’am. Another one with a back catalogue of issues, they always seem to be far worse when they are female. Then again the males are just as bad; Grahim was a prime example of that.’ For a moment the medic’s attention was drawn back to old times, ‘Anyway, how does she expect me to do that? Heliwer seems to have picked up a psychology degree in the time since the last mission and I am already spending far too much time looking out for our new leader. She may have convinced herself with this self medication but it’ll end in tears.’

“Alright everybody let’s get moving again, it’s not that far to the base and I want to be there as soon as possible.” Jae ordered with the same visible swagger she had gained ever since her impromptu promotion.

The rocks of the cliff they had just climbed gave way to slightly greener pastures but there was a clear unease amongst the squad as they marched. Heliwer had stuck close to Xylonia, Jae and Mox were out in front discussing something mechanical and Dusk was slightly behind then. As was usually the case Karash was by himself but observing his fellow RAIDERS intently. Jae was far too happy about her promotion, Mox was fawning over the new SL probably seeking promotion, Dusk was clearly annoyed at something and then there was Heliwer and Xylonia.

‘He is trying to get on your nerves, acting as if he knows how to cope with a hysterical trooper! He could barely look after himself a little while ago. And as for her, she is clearly a few hairs short of a Wookie. No doubt due to the effects of the mission. Though the proximity of the two has been... and the amount of physical contact... and the... oh for frak sake.’ A sudden realisation of what was going on had hit the emotionally stunted medic. ‘Another fraking RAIDERS love. I wonder how emotionally devastating this one will be? They never end well, Hav and Jae are prime examples are that.’

Karash unintentionally began to vocalise his thoughts, “I don’t know why we don’t just change the motto to ‘RAIDERS you are guaranteed to find someone to sleep with, we have free contraceptives’ and a medic who will pick you the fracking pieces when it all goes down the waste disposal pipe!”

“What is the problem?” Jae had stopped and turned to face Karash.

“Nothing, just rambling.” The medic growled.

The squad had been marching now for a little while but they still had a little way to cover, the base they were approaching was supposedly abandoned but Karash had a bad feeling. He could not quite differentiate what the feeling was about though, it could have been about the squads prospects but it might also have been about the squad’s personal problems. Or rather the medics personal problems with the squad. He could not care less about Mox or Dusk, he disapproved of the now apparent relationship between Heliwer and Xylonia and he was worried about Jae. Karash did not like to show he cared but he really did.

‘Joamer knew her issues, he knew that the pressure would send her over the edge, why the hell did he leave her in control? He never did know how to handle this squad and she does but she is not fit. She always a powerful character but she is using that stuff as an excuse to believe she can cope. She is going to kill herself and us. Another matter I am going to have to attend to. They should have made someone else SL... Skarr perhaps... no not Skarr we need someone who knows what they are doing.’

“Doc, fancy joining us any time soon?” Heliwer said in his usual manner.

“I have no intention of joining your little sordid...” Karash quickly realised that Jae had gathered the squad.

“We are almost at the base and this is what’s going to happen.” Jae began another briefing.

Thankfully, the climb had been generally uneventful. No random attacks, no big falls, no crying and no Mox deciding to whip out a grenade and try to blast through the cliff face. However, Jae's head was still on Whiskey and her strange attitude and the anger that seemed to boil in the newest trooper's eyes. If there was more time, if the RAIDERS weren't on a schedule to get this scouting mission done, then the one-eyed woman would take the time to try and settle whatever it was that made Whiskey look at her with such hatred. It bothered her, and it had worried her during the climb, but now that they were all at the top, Jae knew that it was time to get going again.

The woman had gathered the squad around her, and now she was standing with her datapad drawn. "We are almost at the base and this is what's going to happen." She made a few clicks on her datapad and a hologram of the base popped up. The top of the base was above ground, bu the majority of it was underground, giving the base an 'iceberg' effect. Lifting a hand she pointed at one of the small, round, hut like buildings that protruded from the ground and gave way to a network of finished hallways underground. "We enter here. It's where the other scouting squad have entered. Now, as you can see, most of this base is underground-"

"We have to go underground again?" Dusk made a load, audible groan as his shoulder visibly slumped. The others seemed to all take on the same stance at the mention of having to, once again, go through an underground base, and the squad leader knew that memories were flashing through all of them.

Jae's eye, were it not covered by the visor of her helmet, would have shown sympathy. She knew how much shit the squad had gone through while on Anteevy and she hated that she hadn't been in command. The woman couldn't help feeling that if she had been in command things would have gone smoother. The drive and want and need to do good by her squad only brightened, the fire a raging machine in her stomach and heart and mind as she looked over each of her troopers. She had the lead again, and she'd have to be dead for her to give it up.

With a sigh and slow nod, Jae rolled her shoulders. "Yeah, we do. But here's the thing: every other scout mission that has done this routine check hasn't had anything bad happen. Most they've had are fauna attacks."

"I don't think I can handle another one of those things..." Mox visibly shuddered, enticing Heliwer to chuckle a bit. The response to the chuckle was a rock being kicked at Heliwer. "Shut up."

Heliwer grumbled as the grip he had on his blaster tightened. "You better watch it, you little twat."

"CHILDREN! I do not want to have to turn this mission around!" The one-eyed woman had turned off the light of her visor, giving the others a clear visual of her narrowed eye. "Calm down and keep yer scuffles for the gym back home, got it?"

"So says the spice junkie..." The whisper was barely audible, but Jae still caught the butt end of the stab and turned to see Whiskey standing her side facing Jae, defiance evident.

Forgetting that her visor had been turned off, the one-eyed woman allowed the twinge of pain to reach her face, though it remained for only a mere moment  as it quickly turned to annoyance. She squared her shoulders and stepped towards Whiskey, her head held high. At that moment she was the epitome of authority, her good eye calm even despite the annoyance that raced through her veins. "You." The statement flew from her lips with an intensity that instantly caught the other troopers. "If you have a problem with me, you tell me. Don't pull this childish shit. Now... despite how much I wanna know what your issue is with me, even though it's most likely the fact that I'm on spice, it has to and will wait until this mission is over. Do you understand?"

Whiskey stood there, defiant as ever, her own head held high, and yet there was a slight shake to her fists. She was fighting the urge to punch the woman before her. Finally, after many moments, her fists stopped shaking and the woman nodded in silence.

"Good. Now, back to business." Jae took a deep breath and turned back to the rest of her squad. "As I was saying, the majority of the base is underground, we have our entry point and every other routine scout has come back clean. The only things they run into are the bi ol' meanie head fuzzies, scalies and what not." That was met with a few chuckles here and there, and Jae continued. "All we need to do is go through the base, taking notes of each room, the bunkers especially. After we're done, we head out and come back here to rest up for the night. Then we head t the research facility and do the same thing there."

Heliwer spoke up. "Research facility?"

"Yes. The abandoned one that the Rebel forces that were once here were using the develop new weapons. It is also abandoned, so there's really no worry." Jae clicked her datapad and the hologram disappeared and she placed it back in her pocket.

"No worry? Mox was almost eaten by a beastie yesterday..." Karash scoffed, his voice holding doubt.

Jae squared her shoulder again, then rolled them back, a few pops becoming audible as her back cracked here and there. "Well we're definitely going to be cautious. Just don't let it make you paranoid. Mkay?" She turned her visor back on, the sea-foam light bright in the dim light of the dense, dry forest they all stood in. "Good, lets get going." she raised her hand, turned and motioned forward. A smile touched her lips as she heard the others begin to move and she too started forward.

Within fifteen minutes, the forest seemed to open up, giving way to a clearing. The light of the now high-noon sun shone down through the breaks in the tree canopy. The shadows danced as the squad continued to advance, and finally something that didn't fit in with the other surroundings could be seen. A heavy, rounded, stone hut like building protruded from the ground, spires of the same type of heavy stone surrounding it. Should one look closely enough they'd be able to see the rusted, old turrets that used to defend the Rebel base sitting, untouched for years, in the tops of the small spires.

"Well this isn't creepy..." Mox whispered as the squad came to a stop at one of Jae's hand signals.

The woman chuckled and pointed at the dark opening to the stone hut that once held a door. "That's more creepy. This is going to be fun." A smirk drifted across her lips as she chuckled again.

If Jaenna had not pulled them apart, Heliwer would have killed Mox. He noticed afterwards that his hand still was tightly gripping his revolver, and very calmly relinquished his grip. The hut was spooky looking, but it didn't really scare the big trooper. In fact, he snuck up on the private he had threatened earlier and yelled "Boo!" right into his ear, making him jump and yelp in surprise.

"Hehehe, come on Moxy." He chuckled. "Shouldn't be afraid of a delapidated outpost. Or would you rather stay out here and take on another Nexu one on one like last time?"

Before Mox's fist could connect to the sergeant's face, he heard his name being called over by the squad leader. "I need someone to go in first to scout it out." "Why me?" he responded, obviously unnerved by the look of the place.

"Look at it this way. Your gonna be away from Heliwer for a bit.  Once your done, just let us know."

With a deep sigh, the private went in. After a few moments, he called out that it was all clear. The squad filtered in to see what was in there. Computers and desks showed signs of age, a few chairs that were still there looked unable to bear the normal load. Fortunately the lights still worked, and occasionally one would flicker.

"Damn. Thought there was gonna be someone."

The voice came from Naast, the newest member of the squad. He had gone rather unnoticed by Heliwer mainly because he didn't really recognise him as a RAIDER until he proved himself. Right now he was nothing more than a rookie.

"I don't know and honestly don't care." The senior sergeant muttered. "Let's just get this over with."

Musky was the only way the Squad Leader could describe the abandoned base. Thick layers of dust covered everything, the walls were stained with the dirty water that dripped down through cracks in the ceiling. The stains were noticed more and more the further the squad trudged on. The only signs that anyone had been here since the Rebels left were the boot prints left in the dust and grime from the scouting squads sent here before the RAIDERS. The smell of mold was thick in the air, making Jae glad that she had told the squad to keep their helmets on. The last thing she wanted was someone to inhale spores of some sort of harmful fungus.

It was almost disturbing, and it would have been were it not for Jae's experiences with abandoned buildings when she was a teen living in Coruscant. Those experiences were how she had learned to free-run - being the head of a Slicer gang in the big city got her into trouble, and where was best to run than through rubble of old and dilapidated buildings? Now the woman was trudging through inches of dust, carrying a weapon and bore the orange pauldron of a leader. It all brought a smile to her face.

Though she was torn from her trip down memory lane as soon as she saw a shadow scamper across the hallway a few yards in front of them.  Instantly, her StarSlasher was raised, and she lifted a hand into the air to signal the rest of the squad to freeze. The entire squad stood still, each of them with their own weapons raised, waiting to see what the shadow was. Only moments later, a rodent like creature scampered from around the corner, chittering about merrily as it neared the squad.

"Ew. Can I shoot it? Please?" Dusk's voice was full of apparent disgust.

Jae turned, after lowering her weapon and glared at him through her visor. "No. It's harmless. I used to see these things all the time in the city. I just wonder how the little thing got here." The woman turned back around, watching the little rodent continue to chitter as it chewed on a bit of stray flesh that it had probably torn from a rotting carcass of some other animal. "Plus, it's kinda cute."

The rest of the squad scoffed and sighed in their own ways. Some making comments about how there was just another pet lover in the squad now. Others made comments about Joamer's pet. Mox shuddered as he thought back to the little bundle of terror that the resigned Squad Leader would carry around with him.

"Oh shut up, guys." She laughed as she held out a hand to the little rodent like thing. It chittered for a moment, backing away as it clutched its piece of dinner even closer to it's body. "Alright, you're scared. I get it. We'll get outta your hair soon, little buddy." Jae stood back up and watched as the rodent scampered into another dark room. The woman rolled her shoulders and took out her datapad, clicking a few buttons before bringing up a holo of the base. There were a handful of blinking red dots in rooms and within the walls. "Looks like there's a bunch of those little guys scampering around here. But the thermal imaging doesn't detect anything else."

"That mean we can go?" Naast's voice came through the com and Jae only chuckled.

"No, rookie. We still have a job to do. We gotta check all the rooms, make sure nothing's going on that we can't see." Squaring her shoulders, the Squad Leader took a breath, ignoring the lingering and almost suffocating musky scent of the hive base and raised her hand. "RAIDERS, we're splitting up. Dusk, you go with Mox. Head to the east rooms. Heliwer, go with Naast to the Western room. Karash... you go with Mox and Dusk. Make sure they don't kill each other or something. Whiskey, you're with me."

The resulting grumble and annoying mumbling from the only other female in the group brought a deviate smirk that was, thankfully, hidden by the helmet to Jae's face.

Jae fought the urge to mumble back at her mockingly and instead just shrugged. "Yeah, I know you're mad at me. But we work well together. So deal with it for right now." She then made the 'moving on' signal with the hand that was still raised and listened as the troopers moved off to their designated areas. "RAIDERS, meet back here in fifteen minutes. This won't take long at all. Those with datapads, record your findings. Good luck and don't let the critters scare ya."

The pounding of her own heartbeat echoed in her ears.  I’m going to be alone…with her?  Frakk that!   Xylonia stood still in the back.  The assigned groups started to explore in separate directions, slowly and cautiously.  Jaenna waited for her squad to move out before doing so herself.  Confidence and leadership emanated from her posture.  Slowly stepping forward in the only direction no one else took, Jaenna held her weapon ready before her.  With her blaster hung at ease at her side, Xylonia watched Jaenna silently.  After about ten feet, Jaenna realized that Xylonia was not following her.

“Hey, let’s go.” Jaenna stated as she motioned with her head.

Memories from her past were still flooding her mind and heart painfully.  Xylonia adjusted her feet, planting them slightly further apart.  Jaenna was watching her over her shoulder waiting for her to move.  She didn’t.

After waiting a micron or two, Xylonia finally spoke in a very firm and controlled voice, “No.”

Jaenna stood there as frozen as Xylonia.  “What?” Jaenna’s tone was controlled as well, but edging towards anger.

“I’m not going anywhere with you, alone.”  Xylonia was as stiff as a statue, refusing to take her eyes off of Jaenna.

Jaenna turned around and walked up to Xylonia steadily.  “That wasn’t a request.  It was an order Lance Corporal Rose.”  Her helmet was tilted slightly as she paused after her words.

“I don’t take orders from junkies.” Xylonia made sure to emphasize the last word, putting all her hatred into it.

Taking the last few steps to be nose to nose to Xylonia, Jaenna’s tone started to change mildly, “I am your commanding officer, your Squad Leader.  Get your ass moving now, or I’ll move it for you!  We don’t have time for this.”

Xylonia started to shake slightly when she saw Serci’s face reflecting through the sea foam lens of Jaenna’s helmet.  “Make me bitch.”

The two women stared at each other silently through their helmets, both unrelenting.

“Damn it Xylonia!  If you don’t come with me I will report you for a court martial!” Jaenna yelled through the com link.

Xylonia pressed her helmet against Jaenna’s as she spoke in her spooky but controlled tone, “Go ahead.  I’ll report you as well.  I’m sure the military would love to hear how the Raiders’ newest SL is a spice junkie, and apparently has been for quite some time.  I don’t know how you’ve skated by this long, but I’ll find out who you’ve greased and get them a court marital as well for keeping your dirty little secret.  I know Joamer is one of them, since he kept stim packs of spice for your withdrawal emergencies.”  Xylonia’s face was set in stone behind her helmet’s visor.

Jaenna didn’t say a word or move.  Xylonia watched her while she waited.

Finally, Jaenna spoke, “This isn’t the end of this Xylonia.”

“No, it’s not.”  Was all Xylonia replied.

Slowly stepping away from Jaenna, Xylonia walked down the corridor Heliwer and Naast had traversed down.

Jaenna watched the defiant Raider walk away angrily.  Growling under her breath, Jaenna continued on without her.  “There’ll be hell to pay…” she whispered under her breath.

“You got that right SL!”  Xylonia called over her shoulder through the com link.

Once she was out of view of her Squad Leader, Xylonia picked up her pace to catch up to Heliwer and Naast.  Upon her approach, Xylonia saw Heliwer take cover around the corner of the room the tunnel opened up into.  Naast followed suit and hid behind a large and bulky computer console.

“Guys, it’s just me.” Xylonia spoke through the com link.

Heliwer peered around the corner at her warily, dropping his weapon’s aim once he realized who it was.  “What are you doing here? Is something up?”  He seemed nervous.  Naast stood up from behind the console silently.

“No.  There was just a change of plans.”  Xylonia stepped into the room and started surveying it, taking out her data pad to make notes.

“What?”  Heliwer asked perplexed.  “Jaenna gave new orders?”

“No.  I decided who I was going to work with.  Now shut up and let’s get on with it.”  She walked from corner to corner of the room and nodded to Naast and Heliwer. “It’s clear. Let’s move on.”  Her fingers flew across her data pad before she dropped it, letting it dangle on her hip.  With her weapon raised and at the ready, she continued up a different path.

Heliwer and Naast trailed her closely with their weapons ready as well.

Holding his rifle loosely in his hands, Mox was relaxed. The facility did not have any more effect on him, and he believed that there was no-one and nothing in it. Lets get over it... and quickly

“Come on guys, the quicker we secure our side of the compound, the quicker we go home...” Mox said, tightening his grip on the rifle and moving faster.

“What, 'u afraid that some beastie comes and eats you?” Karash said mockingly

“Of course...” Mox muttered sarcastically, replaying what happened there. One moment he was standing, face-to-face to the beast, next one he was flying over 10 meters. Well, one is not invincible

As they moved forward, Mox connected his Datapad to his HUD. “Big hall up ahead. Should we slow down?” Mox asked his squadmates.

“What possibly could be there?” Dusk asked

“Never know...” Mox replied, readying his rifle

They entered the hall, only to be faced with desks, and plastide walls.

“Great... we entered an office...” Dusk mumbled under his breath

The hall was huge, and housed tenths of minioffices. The team splitted up, Mox to the left, Dusk to the right, and Karash into the middle and ahead. As Mox moved he noticed that all of the offices were empty. Some housed the creatures they encountered earlier, but the desks did not have any equipment on them. Looks like the rebels packed up quite nicely... Wonder when... Mox kept on moving, deciding that after they're finished he would check this facility in NR's databases. If I still have full access, that is...

As he moved he began to think the situation over. Rose was obviously pissed off with Jae, Issue with her drug abuse? Oh well... Mox checked another office And Heliwer... uuurgh... how I hate that guy! Fraking bastard... and that girl likes him... Mox sped up How in the frak's name... oh, never mind, don't think about hiim Mox thought to himself Just... keep on walking...

Mox moved onto another row of offices Oh.... this is going to be so looong... Mox thought, annoyed. Who's idea for this mission was? Joamer's, right?.... idiot As he moved he kept hoping he would find anything, a harddrive datapad, even a sheet of paper with something anything that would provide him on information on this facility. Unfortunetly all he found was dust. And then more dust. And even more dust.

----------------------

After half an hour of searching and walking around offices they met on the other side of the hall.

“Finally... lets move on.” Dusk said, with annoyance in his voice

They moved out and Mox reactivated the map on his HUD. He sighed. “We got a split ahead of us. One of them leads to a small room. Should we check it out?”

“Nah... but we have to.” Dusk answered “Karash, what do you think, you've been awfully quiet for the past hour...”

“Nevermind...” Karash spit out through his teeth

“Good to know you're annoyed as well” Mox said, smiling a bit “Very well, lets quickly check this room, and then go back.

They moved onto the room and opened the door. The whole room was empty. “Wow... nice discovery...” Karash commented

“Look, I didn't make this map, or make us go through this side of the compound...” Mox answered

They came back and turned left. They moved silently, trying to get through the compound as quick as they could. The map didn't show anything promising.

“Cheer up, soon we'll meet up with Jae and Rose.” Mox said as they checked another room.

Naast walked behind Rose, thou he didn't understand why she defied orders from the leader. In his clan a dispute like this would be either finished with a new leader or, as was usually the case, with the one ignoring orders dead. Naast decided to remove his helmet because they hadn't redesigned the helmet properly to match his species' preferences of facial features and it messed up his vision, so he would have to ask for a new one when they returned to Tadath.

Naast looked around the rooms as they walked down the current corridor. His only problem was that the ceiling was so low in height, he had to walk hunched over and it was starting to irritate him that Heliwer and Rose showed so much affection for each other. That kind of behaviour wasn't fitting for two soldiers in the field, it would cloud their judgement. Finally, his growing irritation started to transform into anger.

“The Empire must be weak if their troops are allowed to be both disloyal and ignorant of their surroundings.” He mumbled with a angry tone. His squad mate Heliwer apparently heard him because he looked over at Naast.

“What did you say Wookiee?” Heliwer said with a sharp tone. The large feline looked over at the small man with a glare that could cut a man in half.

“I am no Wookiee! I am not afraid of killing people with my claws and I am not afraid of putting people whom disobey orders down. One should always be loyal to one's leader.” Naast said and prepared for a brawl. Heli did not disappoint him. The small man charged Naast's knees in hope of making him fall and the despicable human's hopes came through because Naast fell and the human managed to get on top. Heliwer landed some solid punches on Naast. They exchanged a few punches before Naast landed a solid punch on Heliwer's protected face. Even thou the helmet caught the brunt of the punch it was enough to get Heliwer's helmet to turn ever so slightly so that he lost all his vision.

Naast then pushed the man off and started his own offensive. Trying to get to the least protected areas of his opponents body, the large cat managed to place a few good punches. But before long the small man took his helmet off and regained his vision. Just as the man was coming back to his senses an armored fist landed straight upon his nose.

As the blood started to flow down Heliwer's face, Rose decided that she needed to make the fighting stop. She put the barrel of her rifle in Naast's face and said. “Okay, you have hurt him enough so you can get off of him now.”

Naast realized as the barrel pushed into his face that both his and Heliwer's rifle had been kicked away from them. So he decided that he would listen to the woman. As Naast rose up Heliwer tried to continue the fight but Rose put a stop to that as well by placing her foot with enough force on Heliwer's chest to keep him pinned to the ground.

“I will stay here and stop the blood running from his nose. Perhaps you could go and keep on scouting out the rest of this corridor?” Rose said with a cold voice. Naast knew that in reality one should not go alone but right now the risk of Heliwer wanting revenge was too high, so Naast decided to do as the woman proposed.

Naast walked over and picked up his rifle and continued walking down the corridor.
