If not Lucas, then who?

Recently at Vast Empire, I've seen a lot of folks vent feelings of.... frustration with George Lucas. From Trykon's 'Deathmatch: prequels or original trilogy?' to Raziel's 'The **** has done it again', to name but a few. I hear what many of you are saying, and I feel it too. In some ways, the franchise we know has been choking under the man who first gave it life.

From the Prequel Trilogy to the mixed bag that is the Clone Wars TV series, I honestly get the feeling that Lucas needs to take a step back from Star Wars. The question then becomes, who to take his place, and with what?

Do we want to see Star Wars rebooted and remade like Batman and Star Trek (not really necessary with the Original movies, but I'm sure a better job could be done with some of the ideas for the Prequels)? Do we want to see excellent EU novels or comics (such as the Thrawn Trilogy or the Legacy comics) make the jump to the small or big screen? Or do we want completely original stuff, going far into the established lore's past or future?

More importantly, who would be the man to do this? For new films, how about James Cameron (Aliens, Avatar)? Or J J Abrams (Star Trek)? Or even a great sci-fi director who has never done spaceships before, like Christopher Nolan (Batmas Begins, Dark Knight)?

For small screen Star Wars, how about Joss Whedon (Firefly)? Or Ronald D Moore (Battlestar Galactica)?

My personal pick is Ron D Moore, just because I think his idea of the Galactica was very Imperial Navy. What does everyone else think?

the conjecture is pointless. he owns it. it won't leave his control until they pry it from his cold, dead fingers...and maybe not even then. pointless discussions are a waste of time and energy, why bother.

Such a sunny guy. Pointless discussions are what fandoms THRIVE on!

For my money, I would love to see the Thrawn arc, done "right" (of course that's a nebulous, subjective thing, but again, in keeping with the traditions of nerdism, I'm going to just use the term without clarifying much, in order to spark more conversation... hopefully we get a tangent!).

I'm not sure the Thrawn arc would be particularly filmable.

Any further live action stuff would need an attempt to build new characters and not just a few more hours of special effects.

To that end the old republic would be a good setting for future work.

Give it to Zahn, Stover, or one of the EU writers. Someone who actually gets Star Wars as it should be.

Even the Clone Wars would have been better without his...input. (They were originally going to have a lot of things closer to the older portrayal. Stuff like Alpha from the comics being Anakin's sidekick, Ryloth not rotating...)

To be fair, the live action series sounds vaguely promising. (the Godfather meets Star Wars?) Though a Firefly-esque series would be even better.

I have to go with Trick (sorry Raziel) as I think the Thrawn Trilogy would look great in film form. This is becuase, exactly as you say Corvin, Zahn really gets Star Wars. His writing style was so cinematic, made it so easy to visualise events, that it would take a writer/director combo of epic stupidity to fail in bringing it well to the screen.

As for the live action TV series, it does sound good in premise. I too have heard the Star Wars meets Godfather anology, and I have also heard people say its tone and atmosphere will be "a modern sci-fi show, like Battlestar Galactica". I make no secret of my adoration for Battlestar, and if they want to combine it with Star Wars, I say YES!

BG was a disaster. I agree that the Thrawn trilogy should be done, but not the Old Republic. That has been chopped almost as bad as the movies.
