Welcome, all. I am creating a flight simulator designed specifically for the VE, in the vein of X-Wing Vs. Tie Fighter and X-Wing Alliance. Team: Me: Scripting, Team Leader Stormz: 3d Modeling Planned Features: XvT-style fighter simulator Capital ship simulator of some kind Multiplayer (up to 64 players, although lag is expected) Decent AI (hopefully) If anyone would like to help, or have questions, feel free to reply. Particularly, anyone who could do 2d graphics for the menus and HUD would be much appreciated. I'll post screenshots and information as soon as I have them. Here's a direct link to the latest web-based build, for testing purposes. There will be a lot of weird bugs and graphics errors while I test new features. You need the Unity webplayer to use it (it's not spyware or anything, it's just a plugin, like Flash). Actually, if any/all of you could put together a table of some sort, with different ships' stats in arbitrary, relative scales, like this (nowhere near accurate):
X-Wing

That would be really helpful, because I can't exactly calculate the exact physics of a 60 MGLT drive, can I?  A wiki table would be perfect for that, so everyone can contribute.

Ideas list -1) "Fighter Bay" - I'll get a screenshot of how EVE does this (just a small window), but if we could launch specific wings/squadrons throughout battle, we could use better tactics (for example we can only have 1 full Wing [3-4 squadrons] launched at one time per Capital Ship) We'll have to look at what each ship holds to determine just how many squadrons/wings each ship gets. 2) Tactical Displays - We've already talked about it, but since we only have a certain amount of room, unlike in real life, we'll have to find a good way to relay important information in real time. This is a SCAP's thing alone of course, but it'll be very important. I'm not sure if we want to go a similar route for Cap's as EVE did, but they made it to where you can zoom out EXTREMELY far to get a good view of the battle (this could be a Task Force Commander / Fleet Commander trait alone maybe). 3) Weapons HUD - This should be the easiest. But we need to figure out a simple way to give orders to each officer (even if they are NPC/PC) to get fire laid down, and where it's to be directed at. 4) Shields and Repair systems - Same as weapons hud. I think we should be able to turn the repair systems 'on' and 'off' as necessary (again, like in EVE) to keep your capacitor from draining. 5) Upgrades - Only VEN specific upgrades to be used (this is a VE game). These will only be approved through the NCC. 6) Physics - I'm not sure how hard this will be to work with/change, but I feel that XvT/XWA are sluggish, I'd like to see ships roll, turn, accelerate, decelerate faster and more true to life. 7) Views - A) Fighter - First person only (in pilot suit). Yeah, you can look around but no out-of-fighter views B) Ship - First person (bridge view) if possible as well as an external view for SCAP's and up to view the battle easier (this could relegate the need for a window if it's done correctly). _____ This is what I've thought of as a start. Keep an eye on this post over the coming days as I'll be adding to it. As a side note, if someone can think of something, please speak up. By listening to what people want/like it makes games more desirable to the masses.

1. I'll probably add hangars as a group of docking ports, or even as it's own window on the tactical screen somewhere and just have them spawn next to the hangar. If we go with the docking ports, which I'd rather do, we'll need to have the docking bays scaled correctly to actually fit all the fighters.
2. The majority of the screen would be a map, with basic things like a ship's remaining health, current orders, and name displayed next to icons representing them. The icons wouldn't scale with the map size, so no matter how var zoomed out you are you can still see everything. Right-clicking (or in-universe, 'scanning') on a ship in range could display more detailed information, such as what ships are docked to it, exact figures for hull and shields, remaining armament, subsystem status, et cetera. It would be pretty trivial to also give you the option to look through the ship's cameras (capturing sensor feed).
3. Perhaps, like in XvT, simply have a console-style box in the lower left side listing current orders, and have them flash when they change. Officers will be able to specify what ship, and optionally, which subsystem(s) to target when they give the orders via the tactical screen (right-clicking hostiles and selecting the subsystem would work best, I think)
4. Have another box, this time on the lower right, with a column of toggles for each subsystem and the subsystem's health. Toggling the buttons would activate repair for that subsystem.
5. Simple enough, just have a way for the 'simulation technician' (whoever set up the round) to specify non-default settings for specific ships.
6. I definitely agree with you there. Controls in general will be much more responsive than XvT. If I had Unity Pro I'd also use motion blur, but unfortunately I don't have $1500 to spend on something like that.
7. Placing and switching cameras is ridiculously easy in Unity, so as long as the interiors of the ships are modeled this is no problem.
I'll put together a few mockup images in a minute.

Well, I don't want to over-commit myself after I've already contracted myself out for a bunch of copywriting/editing work, and I'm sure we have better graphic designers out there than me, but if you can't find anyone else, I can certainly contribute 2d graphics for HUD and menus... I know I'm not Navy, but I decided to try my hand at it anyway. I believe it is very well done at the moment. It would be pretty cool to have an option to invert the up and down controls. I know that always gets me.

I went ahead and made a standalone copy for Windows. Just unzip the two files to a folder somewhere and run Launcher.exe. I have a Mac version also, if anyone wants it.
