Marcus walked behind the two squads as they made slow progress through the forest of Tadath. The usual bird calls were silent, the animals and nature itself seemed to realize something bad had happened. Turning around for the hundredth time he scanned the forest behind them for a long moment. He heard Drake walk up a few seconds later.

Shaking his head he turned back around and continued walking. Drake shifted his rifle around and said softly "You notice how they tend to stay together?"

Marcus did not bother to look up, he knew the battered and beaten RAIDERS squad were all within arms reach of each other. He nodded slowly a few seconds later.

"The three that seem to be in charge, I swear there is something going on. This Joamer seems to care about Katash, he even seems to care for Caldwin." Drake said softly as they continued to walk.

Marcus nodded again, he was managing to keep his anger in check but it was a loosing battle. Drake went silent after a moment, the only sound was the quiet footfalls of both squads.

"It's too bad they failed their mission. It will be probably put on their records as a failure. Even though that thing was near suicide to begin with." Drake said slowly, evenly. He managed to keep the anger out of his voice, but only barely.

"They tried though, the managed to injure or kill most of the men stationed at that base. They got the comms array down before they were captured. I think if they had a few more minutes they would of completed their mission." Marcus said finally, his voice barely reaching Drake standing not five feet away.

The ASL nodded as he watched Joamer shrug off the young girls arm and reach for his Particle Magnum. The Gunny had managed to find his pistol out in the battle field before they had left. A few of the other squad members had found their old weapons as well.

Joamer stopped and followed with his eyes, a dark shape skittering away about fifty feet from them. Marcus and Drake walked up next to him, the shape vanished as quickly as it had shown up. The group stopped a moment later, everyone grabbed weapons and circled the stretcher as the noticed three men looking off in the same direction. The squads worked together even without orders.

"Noghri." Someone said, Joamer nodded slowly, his forehead nearly dripping sweat. His breathing was harsh, and he looked near to collapse.

"It's gone." Marcus said a moment later, and no one is following us.

"Oh they're following us, just staying back a klick or so. They send out their pet here to keep an eye on us." Joamer muttered with sudden strength.

Marcus starred at him a long moment before nodding slowly. After a moment he said, "They are not herding us though, just following."

"Alright, enough talk, let's get moving again. We don't have far to go now. If we get there quick enough we might be able to get some sort of defenses up." Doronson said to everyone.

The squads took a moment to pick two new people to carry the stretcher. Joamer went to grab one end but was nearly pounced on by the young female medic. A quiet shouting match ensued, but after a moment Joamer nodded and stepped back.

Caldwin stayed to one side, her hand every once in awhile moving to touch the unconscious form of Katash. Joamer walked with one arm around the young medic, but he looked like he wanted to grip the hand of the woman on the stretcher.

Marcus shook his head and ignored them, that whole squad was just messed up he figured. Drake mumbled something to himself as he watched the scene unfold, after a moment he said "Those two, Joamer and what's her name Roellum?" Marcus nodded in agreement. "Those two are brother and sister, you can tell by the way she banters him."

Soft chuckles escaped Marcus's mouth for a few seconds. "Too bad our squad is not as close as they are." Drake punched him in the shoulder suddenly.

"None of that now, one strange relationship is enough." Drake said playfully. They both went silent as they continued walking.

Marcus long ago gave up trying to figure out the relationship between Doronson and An'Owyn, it was just odd. He adjusted the grip on his disruptor and continued walking. He sighed as he watched the injured RAIDERS carry their wounded female away. His hand gripped the rifle tighter as his anger increased again.

Drake walked behind the stretcher being carried by Norgath, Roellum, and Jaenna. The two medics supporting one side, Roellum still had Joamer draped over her arm muttering complaints the whole way.

They were moving as fast as they could, considering. The clearing was just under one kilometer away now, and Drake could not wait to get there. He was not silly enough to delude himself into thinking this was going to be easy. Every field trooper in the area would probably be converging on that same clearing, just as soon as the noghri scout reported in.

With a sigh Drake kept on moving. Danica was yanking things out of her pack. She looked at them skeptically for a second before shaking her head, muttering a curse or two, and stuffing them back in.

“Having some trouble there, Snarl?” Drake was almost amused by the situation.

The combat engineer, sneered and turned to her ASL. “I have an idea for what to do, when we get to the clearing, it would be epic. But I just can't get the combination of explosives right. Its very irritating.”

Drake nodded. “I bet.”

The last of the journey was completely uneventful. They pair of squads took turns carrying the RAIDERS ASL, and they made decent time. They saw the noghri once more just before they were in visual range of the clearing. He was still giving them room, just as before. Must have been determining their strength and size. More than likely confirming the existence of more reinforcements.

Danica immediately got to work, placing charges of some kind around the perimeter. Drake followed the RAIDERS as they found a decently secure spot to place the stretcher containing Katash. He still marveled at how close they all seemed. He became even more confused as Caldwin knelt down and kissed Katash on the forehead, then whispered something to her unconscious ASL.

“Was that a record we set for killing rooks or what?” Bertal's voice broke Drake out of his very confused thoughts.

“Not sure, did you reach the medvac?”

“Yep Sev, they are on their way. Now for the real question, when are the field troopers showing up?”

Drake looked around. Marcus was patrolling, looking for any sign of the field troopers or the noghri in the forest. Drake could hear the medvac transport in the distance, it would only be two maybe three minutes and they could get out of the blasted forest. Unfortunately, that was not going to happen.

The shots came from the north-most point of the clearing. It looked like a full squad of field troopers. Drake could not help but wonder if that was all they were going to be dealing with, or if there were more squads flanking them as he stood there swinging his rifle into place.

The ghosts and able-bodies RAIDERS ducted under cover aiming their weapons and preparing for what Drake hoped was a quick battle.

Marcus dropped to the ground and crawled forward to a downed tree. He raised his M3 Disruptor and opened fire, the shots were not aimed much, only fired to give the rest of the group time to take cover. The ones in RAIDERS able to shoot began shooting almost as quick as Ghost did.

Marcus nodded slowly as he watched Jae signal to Bacredi and Joamer to try to circle around. Doronson gave the signal to Marcus and Danica to circle the other way. An'Owyn opened fire with her V-Web as the four indicated troopers sprinted for opposite sides of the field.

Marcus leaped into the forest still wondering where she managed to find that thing. It was used as an anti-vehicle weapon, though it seemed to do a pretty good job at keeping troopers from getting close.

"Bertal, get on the comms. Contact our transport, get him to fly over and deal with these pests." Drake said into the commlink.

"Ghost four, to Ghost Air. Need immediate cover fire. Come down on our signal." Bertal said. Marcus took cover behind and tree and opened fire as two field troopers tried to make a run for the main group. One was shot in the chest, the other was dropped to the ground from either Bacredi or Joamer.

"Ghost Air copy, ETA two minutes." The comm link clicked off a second later.

Marcus shook his head and fired again, Danica knelt a few feet away and begin popping off shots one by one.

"Cover me, I'm going to get our friends over there a surprise." Danica said, a second later she rose up and vanished into the undergrowth heading towards the north side of the clearing. Marcus sighted down the rifles scope and fired again.

"What the frak is she doing?" He heard Drake's voice come over the comm link a few seconds later.

"Don't ask me." Marcus said as he fired again. "She has a mind of her own. Probably going to make a big boom though." He ducked down as several blaster shots sizzled through the space he had just vacated. Sensing something behind him he kicked away just as a wicked single bladed sword lodged itself in the ground.

Standing up he watched as a different Noghri hissed at him and charged. Turning around he rushed back into the clearing shouting to An'Owyn. He dropped behind cover as she spun around and opened fire at the Noghri.

Marcus flipped over and began firing but watched as the Noghri seemed to just ignore the blaster bolts fired at him. A second later he spun around and charged back into the forest.

Swearing softly Marcus raised up and fired again. A soft thud landed next to him and he cringed as he waited for the explosion. A soft laugh caused him to look over at Danica sitting near him. She smiled as she hit a button on a small datapad she held. A split second later the north half of the field seemed to just explode.

"Transport incoming, RAIDERS your ride is here." Doronson shouted. Marcus looked over as a medical shuttle landed.

The beaten squad wasted no time before they ran towards the ship. Joamer and Bacredi sprinting the stretcher into the open hatch, Joamer paused for an instant and nodded at Marcus once before he stepped on board, the landing hatch closed and the ship took off a few moments later.

Shots began ringing out from every direction as the ship disappeared into the distance. Marcus swore as a shot grazed his shoulder pad. Spinning around he fired at a group of more troopers running at them from the south.

A loud roar caused him to duck down as the LAAT shoot over head, the composite beam pinpoint laser turrets turning the ground into slag as it turned in a low arc over the clearing.

The field troopers stopped in their tracks and retreated quickly into the forest. The ship made one more pass before landing a few feet away. Everyone stood up and walked towards the ship,
Marcus turned around and looked at An'Owyn still standing twenty feet away.

She looked up at him with a calm expression on her face. He looked down at the V-Web blaster rifle sitting on the ground next to her. It seemed to shudder once before it exploded. Her body landed two seconds later near the ship. He watched all of that happen within two seconds, it was just so fast.

Without saying a word Marcus and Drake rushed over and dragged the badly burned body back into the ship. The hatch slid closed as the LAAT gained altitude and left the clearing behind.

Drake knelt next to An'Owyn on the dirt floor. The RAIDERS were slowly getting loaded into the medvac and Katash was already being tended to by the medics from the transport. It was odd, but to Drake it almost seemed like they were reluctant to leave the battle. Wisp was pacing back and forth around Seven and An'Owyn, muttering to himself. The rest of the squad was gathering the supplies the medvac team had brought for them, and just plain enjoying a moment without blaster fire. After the LAAT lit half the forest around them on fire, blasting the field troopers they seemed to have retreated into the forest. Drake just wanted to go before the damn noghri came back.

The LAAT's engines rustled the trees around the squad as it landed in the clearing. Drake barely paid attention to that, he was too busy attempting to prep  An'Owyn for her ride in the transport. Wisp would not go far from Drake, which was just fine, he was going to need some help carrying An'Owyn into the LAAT.  Drake would have accepted help from the medics, but they had their hands full with the RAIDERS and as long as they kept giving him whatever supplies he needed he was really doing all he could for the HWS.

“Shouldn't she be awake?” Wisp was chewing on his thumb nail as he continued to pace.

Drake grumbled something under his breath as he continued to apply salve to her burns. He was avoiding telling Doronson the truth. In a way, Sev did not even want to admit the truth to himself. With burns over most of her body, and the visible broken bones, An'Owyn's chances were slim in a full medical center, much less on the battlefield. Not to mention the fact that being unconscious was the best blessing she could have hoped for, with burns like the ones she had the pain would be unimaginable.

“She needs to conserve her strength, Wisp.” It was as good of an answer as any at this point. Drake did not pretend to understand the relationship between Wisp and Buster, but he could understand the pain of watching someone close to you in this condition. Drake did not even want to begin to think about how it would affect them all if she died.

One of the medics from the medvac transport jogged over to Doronson and Drake. “Okay we have them secure and stabilized for transport. You sure we can't give you guys a ride too?”

Wisp did not answer, he just stared blankly at the man standing there in his medical uniform. With a sigh Drake spoke up. “We are good, anyways our pilot is just about to land and we will be right behind you lot.”

The medic smiled and nodded, jogging back the way he came. All of the Ghosts paused where they were and watched the transport rise up above the tree line, then shoot off towards safety. The Ghosts had finished their mission, but something still nagged at each of them.

They all seemed to equally feel for the RADIERS. They were well-trained and cohesive, together they were a strong unit. It just did not seem fair that they had not been able to finish their objectives, in fact it lacked the honor they deserved. Drake could see the rest of the squad felt the same way looking at their tired eyes. The eyes around him also held a large amount of worry for the battered girl laying on the ground next to him.

This mission had proved to be a gut-wrenching affair, and Drake for one could not wait to see it end. He longed for a hot meal, shower, and a soft bed. Something told the medic that none of those things were going to happen in his near future, though.

It was surprisingly quiet as Wisp and Drake entered the transport carrying Buster. The others just took their seats and stowed their gear without even a word. Some had even laid their head back against the bulkhead in exhaustion.

Drake snapped the last of the straps into place, and attached the necessary medical  equipment to give An'Owyn the best possible chance to survive this mission. Doronson sat solemnly at Busters' feet, staring nervously into her battered face. Drake could not imagine things ending like this, something was missing, something else needed to happen.

Marcus sat in his seat and ran his fingers through the caked mud on his armor. He felt the LAAT lift off and begin a full speed journey back towards the base. Doroson was out for the count, he only had enough strength left to stare at An'Owyn. Every few seconds he would reach up and softly stroke her forehead, his eyes held the comments his voice could  not make.

Drake looked up at Marcus a few minutes later and shook his head slowly. Marcus had seen enough injuries to know she was on the cusp of critical, she had minutes to go.

Turning towards the rear of the LAAT he keyed in the frequency for high command and said "Ghost 3, to command. I repeat, Ghost 3, to command."

"Command here, authenticate." His comm link crackled a few seconds later.

Flipping a few switches to send the code he said "Mission complete. We have three KIA's, and one in critical condition."

"Come to the beta medical facility, your pilot is receiving the coordinates now." He flipped off the link and looked up at the pilot. He turned around and shook his head.

Standing up Marcus walked to the front and looked at the holomap. He held back a curse as he noted the flight time. It would take them nearly ten minutes to reach the site, he doubted she had that long.

"Push her to the limit, break the engines if you have to." Marcus said softly, the pilot nodded as he turned around and went to sit back down.

Long minutes passed before An'Owyn opened her eyes slowly. Doronson smiled as he touched an unburnt part of her face. Drake stood up and placed his hand on Doronson's shoulder, the gesture said everything that needed to be said. Marcus watched as the SL twitched once before nodding. Marcus turned around as he figured out what the gesture meant. She was not going to make it.

Drake walked back to the rear of the ship slowly, as Doronson began speaking quietly to An'Owyn. Marcus tuned them out and tried to not think of all the past times this had happened. How many times had an injured friend made it back only to die minutes from help. The Rooks did not bare mention at all, he had seen more then he cared to count of them die on their first mission.

"How long?" Marcus said very quietly, his voice only carried to the sitting form of Drake. After he had walked back to the rear of the ship he slid down the bulkhead and placed his head on his knees.

"Moments, she has major internal injuries. Even with a bacta tank, I don't think it would of saved her. The explosion was just too much." Drake said, he went silent and closed his eyes as he heard the sound of Doronson crashing to the floor.

Marcus leaned back and fought the emotions welling up in him. He might of not approved of the relationship, but she was still a friend. She had been with them for years, and more then once saved his life. He let the past few days wash over him, he fed the anger that he usually held back with everything that had happened.

He opened his eyes to see the few surviving members of the squad looking in his direction. Doronson had crawled into a dark corner and was ignoring everyone as he dealt with the emotions his way.

Drake looked up at Marcus and nodded slowly, evenly. Marcus let the emotion of how RAIDERS had been treated, of how Thrawn dared to attack their home. He let the anger wash over him as he stood up and gripped a pipe above him.

"Pilot, turn us around." Marcus said. The pilot turned his head and looked at Drake after a moment, since Doronson was ignoring everyone. Drake nodded once, before standing up himself.

Marcus leaned to the left as the LAAT banked. He looked at every squad member one by one. Before he said "If anyone wants out, just say so now." Everyone looked at each other slowly, their eyes were all the same. The anger, and emotions were running high in everyone, no one spoke.

Drake and Marcus shared a brief look before they both nodded. The ship gained speed as they shot back towards the battle field, their mission was not yet over.

The transport was silent for a few moments. Drake got up and placed a sheet over An'Owyn, trying not to look at Doronson still cowering in the corner. Sev ran his hand through his short hair and returned to his seat with Marcus.

Drake had never defied orders in his entire life. Yet here he was, ASL of Ghost squad, going against a direct order from HC. He knew that his family would not understand, his siblings would probably beat him up. It was crazy, and more than likely suicide, but it felt right.

“Heh.” The squad simultaneously raised an eyebrow and looked at Bertal, all except for Doronson. “You guys remember that mission, the one on Rhinnal?”

Danica snickered next to Bert. “Oh yeah, the one where we had to save your ass comm techie?”

“I beg to differ. That was strategic planning on my part. If you guys hadn't come to find me in that cave, then you would have been right in the middle of that town square when the reinforcements landed.” The Ghosts' who were listening all chuckled.

Drake could not resist, he decided to join in. “No that mission, it was doomed from the start. Remember that rookie we had with us on that one, he kept firing his jet pack while we walked down the street. I'm sure he gave that one old lady coming out of the shop a heart attack.”

Even Marcus started to laugh at that one. Wisp still had not moved or changed his facial expression but he was looking at the squad now rather than the shrouded form of his dead girlfriend. Ghost squad had been through many missions together. Rooks came and went, most not staying longer than their first mission, but the group of commando's sitting in the transport had been constant.

This was what made being a Ghost different from any other squad. They may not have been as close as the RAIDERS seemed to be, but they knew how to pull together and get a job done. Drake was proud to serve with them, whether or not this was his last mission.

The LAAT swerved to avoid anti-aircraft fire, but the Ghost just kept on joking and talking about missions from the past. They teased and made fun of each other, laughed at ridiculous mistakes rookies made, and just enjoyed each other's company for what they all knew was probably the last time.

Unfortunately, there was some business that needed to be addressed before they jumped back into the action. And with Wisp only half-way back with them, it fell on Drake to pick up the slack.

“Bertal, do we have any clue to the location of those commanders?”

Bert scrolled through his datapad, looking through the intel that they did have. They had been lucky, Danica found a datacard laying on the ground from one of the fallen troopers. It contained comm codes and some deployment information, also the pilots of the LAAT had spotted a few locations that could have been where the field commanders moved to. The thing they would not be able to find out was the amount of resistance they would be met with. It really did not matter though, Drake knew as the rest of the squad knew, the commanders were going to die.

“Okay I think I narrowed it down, look at this.” Bert jumped up and squeezed between Marcus and Drake, causing a loud 'pfft' from Reaper.

Drake smirked and looked at the map, one of the locations was marked. The intel did seem to point to what looked like just another LAAT parked in the forest. Drake nodded and glanced at Marcus. The two looked at each other for a long minute before Reaper clapped Bertal on the back. “Good work, Bert.”

With a final deep breath, Drake got up and gave the pilot the new coordinates. Now they only had minutes to go and they would be fighting yet again.

Marcus felt Bert nudge his shoulder and nodded toward Doronson. He looked over at the SL who was standing over the still form of An'Owyn. His eyes were blank, emotionless. His hands were clenched into fists, Marcus shut his eyes as Doronson kissed the top of her forehead once before standing up.

He heard the SL walk to the back of the transport and began getting ready, a few of the others joined him in preparing.

"You think we will make it back?" Bert asked quietly. Marcus looked up and watched what remained of the squad prepare. After a moment he looked at Bert and shook his head slowly.

"I think if you have any last minute things to say you should say them now." Marcus said loud enough for the whole ship to hear him. A few of the others stopped what they were doing and picked up datapads, he tuned them out as they recorded messages for loved ones.

Marcus stood up and walked to the cockpit, sitting down in an empty chair he keyed the beta medical site. A few seconds later a young woman with her hair in disarray said "Yes, how may I help you?" He could hear shouting and general chaos from her location.

"Has the RAIDERS transport landed yet?" Marcus said after a few moments.

He watched as the young lady checked on a computer screen he could not see. She looked up and nodded before saying "They landed twenty minutes ago. A Katash is in surgery, the others are receiving treatment for various wounds."

"Is the fellow named Joamer available?" Marcus said right after it looked like the young girl was going to say something else.

"He's receiving bacta treatment, early reports say he is going to be in the tank for days still." She said after she glanced at the computer screen again. "If it's really important, I could have him removed."

"No, no." Marcus said, he looked at the pilot as he pointed at a distant clearing. "Just, tell him... tell him he was a good friend, and I would of liked to have him in my squad. Tell all the RAIDERS that."

Marcus turned off the monitor right before the girl went to say something. He sighed slowly and closed his eyes. He felt Drake put a hand on his shoulder, after a moment he stood up and watched the LAAT begin to swoop in lower towards the field.

"Looks like the pad was right, a nice LAAT sitting right there in the middle." Drake said as he starred out the front window.

"Orders, sirs?" The pilot said a few seconds later.

Marcus and Drake looked at each other, and looked at the squad standing near the hatches. They shared a grim smile before Marcus stepped into the back to gather his gear.

A few seconds later he heard Drake say "Turn that field into slag."

"With pleasure, sir." The pilot said. He might of not been in the squad, but he had flown them on numerous occasions. The squad considered him an honorary member, so he felt the lose of An'Owyn almost as much as they did.

Marcus locked his helmet in place as the LAAT banked right and opened fire. He felt the twin thumps as the mass-driver missile launchers fired. He heard the quad pinpoint laser turrets slashing into the soft ground, turning the vegetation into charred ash. A few seconds later he saw several field troopers running for the shelter of the tree line. The anti-personnel turrets cut them down in mid stride.

The pilot banked the ship again and aimed for the LAAT, keying for all weapons he opened fire. The combined force of every weapon caused the enemy ship to shudder once before it exploded.

"You think we got the commanders?" Someone behind Marcus said.

Drake looked towards the rear of the ship and shook his head. "I surely hope not." He turned back around and keyed in another location from the enemy datapad. "Take us here, this appears to be an emergency fallback point for their command council."

"With pleasure, sir." The pilot said as he turned the ship and engaged full throttle.

A lone survivor pulled himself from the wreckage of the destroyed LAAT and watched as the enemy ship vanished. The lone Noghri picked up his swords and began jogging in the direction of the base, the same direction the ship was heading in.

The LAATs engines shuttered as it descended to the forest floor. The Ghosts were at the right location, but it appeared to be nothing more than a clearing in the woods, and a small one at that. The LAAT took up almost the entire area.

Drake and Marcus stood together near the landing ramp. Both of them seemed to need just a moment of silence before they entered the fray once again.  Drake had his hand lightly covering the door controls, as they looked at each other then turned to look at the rest of the squad all geared up and ready to go. Even Doronson had all of his equipment secured on his back, which made him a prepared soldier but his eyes were cold and vacant. He did not plan on coming back from this mission, but Wisp would take every single one of the bastards with him to the other side.

They all nodded, and Drake pushed the controls. The smell of forest and charred trees hit them like a slap on the face. The smoke in the clearing was destroying any visibility they would have had, but that did not matter. What was missing was quite obvious.

“Drake, where in the hell is the transport? Or, shit anything?” Danica grumbled as she passed the medic and started to investigate the ground for track marks.

“Something was here, and here.” Marcus knelt down near her and pointed to the boot prints in the soft ground. “Troopers were in this area. The tracks come from the direction we were just in, and well disappear over there.”

“What the hell do you mean they disappear?” Bertal stomped over to the area that lacked any tracks from humanoid troopers. He yanked out some of his equipment and started to run scans on the area.

“Maybe they just kept on moving. We could get back in the LAAT and take a look.”

“No Drake, this is where they should be. Everything indicated this was the fall back point, the next clearing is five klicks or more from here. It would have taken them too long to use that.” Marcus was frustrated, Drake could tell. They all just wanted to make this right and get it over with, come what may.

A clanking noise stopped every Ghost dead in their tracks. Drake just stood there and tried to block out any other sound except that one. The rhythmic clanking came again, and again. Then he looked up at Doronson.

“That…doesn’t sound like a tree stump.” Wisp was standing about a hundred feet from the rest of them. Through the lifting fog of smoke Drake could see him kicking his boot against something low to the ground.

Cautiously, Drake and Marcus approached their squad leader and took a closer look at the object he was abusing.  Marcus knelt down to touch the object while Drake kept an eye on Doronson. The man looked broken, and there was not much Drake could do for that except make sure he did what he had to do before he got himself killed.

“I’ll be damned.” Marcus whispered under his breath.

Drake watched as Marcus cleared some of the haphazardly pulled brush away from what was the entrance to a bunker of some sort. Reaper reached his hand to touch the door of the bunker and check the controls, as the other members of the squad started to approach with their weapons raised at the trees in the area.

“The door was opened not too long ago, I think we found it.”

This was it. That door was going to open and they were probably going to be met by who knows how many field troopers, the missing noghri and somewhere deep in the old bunker the two commanders hiding. With a final check, everyone nodded and Marcus punched the controls.

Marcus stepped back as the hatch began to open. For a second it stopped its slow progress, Marcus knelt down and aimed his M3 Disruptor into the small opening. He made the first move to smack the hatch, right when it decided to open the rest of the way.

Waiting for a moment, he slung his rifle and climbed down the short ladder to the ground below. Dropping the last few feet, he used the momentum to drop to his knees while pulling his rifle up at the same time. Breathing slowly he scanned the dark corridor in front of him. On down away he could see a light flicker on and off slowly, when it was on he could see multiple doorways and hallway entrances.

Raised his hand he signaled the rest of the squad and moved forward slowly. He left the light on his rifle off, and let his night vision take over. Making his way to the first hallway he stopped and used all his senses to detect if anyone or anything was hiding in the shadows. For a brief instant he heard a soft noise, almost as if someone had dragged their boot to get a better footing.

Backing up he stopped when he felt a hand on his shoulder. He starred into the darkness as the last Ghost member was down the ladder, a second control panel was activated to seal the hatch. He waited a long minute to let his night vision return. Using his hand he tapped Drake on the shoulder one time, then tapped his neck with three fingers. He felt his ASL nod and turn around to repeat the signal down the line.

It was a silent signal they had designed some years ago to be used in no light condition, one tap meant left side, three taps meant possibly more then one person, but at least one. He had thought about writing a book on all the combinations, but he gave up after he had reached page two hundred. He remembered watching as the pages burned, one by one. He even remembered buying a old transport ship and setting it on a course for a nearby sun, just in case someone crazy enough decided to repair those pages.

He felt two taps on his back, the signal to proceed forward. Making his way to the hallway again he pulled out a frag grenade and prepped it. He felt a single tap on his back again and tossed the grenade as far into the hallway as he could. Ducking down he held his ears and closed his eyes, long seconds went by before it exploded. He felt things fall from the ceiling and impact his helmet.

Waiting for a moment he spun to the other side of the entrance and opened fire blind. Drake positioned himself on the other side and opened fire as well. They used the light from the blaster bolts to see into the hallway. He saw two or three men go down before they began returning fire. By this time it was too late, the structural integrity of the old bunker could not stand against a grenade and a shoot out. Marcus and Drake ducked back out of the entrance as the ceiling collapsed on the remaining field troopers.

A few of the squad switched on flash lights, they had been together long enough to know what had to be done. Keeping the light away from the people still looking into the dark, Danica began setting charges on the ladder. They knew they could not let anyone get past them and to the surface, at least through this entrance. Any others they found they would destroyed as well.

Turning around she nodded. They squad made their way slowly down the corridor again, they took their time and listened for any noise. They knew would not have long before reinforcements showed up, but they knew most of them would be near the central command room.

Stopping at the fifth intersection they waited till the signal came that it was clear. Danica pulled out a detonator and flipped the switch, the squad braced themselves as the complex shook again. A few seconds later they could hear pieces of debris crashing to the floor.

Bertal took point and stepped out into the hallway, he turned a corner and paused. He raised his rifle and went to pull the trigger but stopped. Marcus watched as Bertal glanced above him, he sighed slowly and closed his eyes.

A small explosion went off on the ceiling a moment later. Marcus watched as pieces of stone and metal crashed into the him. The trooper seemed to still be alive, he tried to stand but a long metal rod impacted his chest armor. His head slowly leaned back as his chest stopped moving.

Drake went to check on him but stopped as blood began pooling on the floor around him. He turned around and shook his head, a second later the squad moved down another hallway slower this time.

Bertal had been a good trooper, and a good man. It hurt Drake, but part of him knew that Bert was not going to be the last of them to fall. The dark corridor was like a long coffin designed specifically for the Ghosts, or what was left of them. Wisp looked the most numb, his face winced every time he took a step as if he were walking on glass. Marcus was close to Drake, and Danica was taking the rear.

Thrawn's men knew they were here, they knew the Ghosts were coming. The field troopers had even managed to set traps. That could only mean one thing, they were waiting for them. Somewhere in the dark there was at least nine field troopers just waiting for them.

Wisp paused on point, he was at a corner peaking around to see what was ahead. Suddenly, he jerked his head back around and the hallway erupted in blaster fire.

“Found em'.” Wisp yelled into his comm.

Danica grimaced and reached over Wisp's body to throw a frag grenade at the unknown number of troopers firing at them. The bolts ricocheted off the wall, almost nailing Drake more than a few times. The smoke in the corridor was growing to a suffocating level.

Drake knelt down to get better visibility as he took his turn firing. The squad was operating in a rotation, since only two people could fire down the hallway at a time they would take a few shots and fall back, switching positions.

Danica's grenade fired, causing the bunker to shake once again. Debris fell from the ceiling and walls but nothing that could crush any of the Ghosts. Screams could be heard down the hall, as the grenade hit its mark. Again they had no idea how many were killed, Wisp simply smirked at the sound and turned back down the corridor to continue firing.

The smoke was now so dense, it was impossible to pick a target. The squad just fired rounds blindly into the fray, hoping to do some damage.

Drake thought about his family. They were a big group, all military people, and so far they had always all made it home when the missions were done. Drake would be the first to die in the line of duty. His sister would probably yell, 'I told you to be a scientist like mom' at the package containing his personal items. He hoped they would understand, and see that what they were doing right now was far more important than anything else they had done. The Ghost's were here to finish what the RAIDERS had started, hell he could imagine the RAIDERS doing this themselves for the Ghosts if the tables were turned.

The fighting was getting them nowhere. Drake still could not see the enemy numbers, at least not with any certainty. He knew they had taken out a few with Danica's grenade. She wanted to throw another, but she was down to two now, and Drake did not want to waste those if he did not have to. After this they needed to barge through the doors behind the troopers and hopefully take out the two commanders who were waiting for them.

“Aw to hell with this. Drake!” Wisp muttered then yelled into his comm at his ASL who was kneeling at his feet. “You do not leave here without the heads of those commanders and that damn blue noghri bastard, you understand me?”

Drake looked up at his squad leader, the stand-off almost forgotten in his mind. “What are you talking about Doronson, that was the plan as I recall. Why do you think I need a refresher course?”

“Shut up, and get ready to follow those orders Gunny.” Wisp spit back at the medic, then took a long deep breath whispering something to himself he pushed off the wall, and in a blaze he went running down the hall right at the field troopers.

“Son of a bitch.” Marcus yelled and went to run after Doronson, but Drake stopped him. The two got into position with a very confused Danica behind them, and waited for the perfect moment to make sure that Wisp's sacrifice was not in vain.

Marcus watched as Wisp made a suicidal run at the firing field troopers. He raised his own rifle but could not get a shot off as Wisp ducked and dodged his way towards the double doors. He saw one of the troopers fire almost in slow motion, Wisp took it in the shoulder but only snarled louder.

"Why is he not firing?" Danica yelled from behind them. Marcus and Drake only shook their heads in confusion as they watched him lower his rifle to his chest.

"Oh god, no." Marcus whispered as he noticed what was in Doronson's hand. His thumb flipped off the lever on the thermal detonator and rammed his way into the group of men. Marcus watched as he was shot multiple times, he skidded to a stop in the middle of the floor as his left hand let go of the grenade.

Marcus felt Drake drop to the ground, he tried to grab Danica but missed as the grenade exploded. He felt shrapnel and debris fly over his head. Seconds or minutes later after his ears stopped ringing he stood up and looked at Drake. He stood up slowly and checked the hallway, one of the double doors was blown aside, the walls and ceiling were hanging dangerously.

Drake moved over to the downed female and lifted her gently to her feet. She shoved off his hands and stood on her own a second later.

"Let's get going." She said, she wiped her hand across her mouth and hid whatever she had removed. She glared at Marcus daring him to say anything. He shrugged and walked down the hall slowly, a blackened spot on the ground was the only thing that remained of Doronson Talley. The few that remained of Ghost squad paused for a moment before moving on, they had a job to do.

Stepping into the room Marcus raised his rifle and fired at a retreating figure. He held down the firing stud until the rifle beeped and clicked six times. Dropping the disruptor he ran into the room and drew his combat knife. Screaming he plunged the knife into the back of whoever he had shot multiple times. Blood and gore covered his chest armor and his hands as he plunged it in again and again.

He felt someones hand reach around him and pull him off, breathing for a long few seconds he nodded and was let go. He sheathed the knife without cleaning it, he glared down at the dead body wishing it would come back to life just so he could kill it again.

Drake knelt down and rolled the body over, he checked the ID tags and nodded before he stood up. "It's one of them, unless their field troopers hold the rank of lieutenant commander." Drake said a moment later. Marcus nodded and slapped a fresh clip into his rifle, he was rubbing the blood into the rifle as he ignored everything around him.

The sound of something sliding to the ground caused both men to turn. Danica coughed a couple times and wiped her chin again, this time leaving a trail of blood behind. She said slowly, through coughing fits "Well, guess I was the next to go."

Drake and Marcus rushed over, Drake knelt down and examined the sudden flow of blood that had appeared in Danica's chest. He shook his head slowly a second later and she smiled grimly. After a moment she said "Why do you think I just had us leave and not stop?" She coughed again, blood flowing out of her mouth and down her chin. "I'm pretty sure it punctured my lung."

Without saying another word she pulled her pack off with sudden strength and began constructing something. Long minutes passed as she pulled out every explosive and wire she had left, after she was done she handed a detonator to Marcus and nodded.

"This, should be strong enough to bring this place down, just in case." She said slowly. Marcus and Drake nodded slowly, after a moment Marcus placed his hand on her shoulder. Drake copied the gesture, with what strength she had left she placed both of her hands on their shoulders. She lost what energy she had and let her hands trail down their arms, leaving blood smears behind.

She leaned her back and breathed once and said very softly, "I would of liked to see him, one more time." Her eyes closed slowly, after a moment her chest moved for the last time.

Drake kept his hand on Danica's shoulder. Marcus had moved back concealing the detonator so no one would find it. Drake was tired of this, he was tired of people dying around him, he was sick to death of the whole mission. Seven gripped Danica's lifeless shoulder until he had to remove his hand to complete the fist. Then he punched the wall over and over until he finally felt Marcus' hand wrapping around him and pulling him back.

“There is still a commander and a noghri to kill, save that anger soldier.” Drake took a few ragged breaths with Marcus' arm wrapped around his chest. They both were filthy and covered in blood from friends and foe alike. They both just wanted this to end already.

Drake nodded, and Marcus stood up to help Seven to his feet. “Where did they go?”

“They couldn't have gone far, Drake. Let's just head this way, I saw the little bastard scurrying that way.” Marcus walked in the direction he was pointing. The two troopers had been through so much together, and Drake would not have picked anyone else to be in this situation with.

They made their way down the hall, stepping over debris and body parts along the way. They both moved in silence with determination to accomplish their goal no matter what. Drake and Marcus had just watched all of their comrades die, they both knew that this may have started as vengeance for what had happened to RAIDERS but now it was also about what had happened to Ghost squad as well. Someone was going to pay for the pain and blood they had witnessed today.

They rounded a corner and Marcus let his arms relax and fall to his sides. Drake rushed up next to him and saw the noghri standing in front of them, both blades drawn and pointed at Marcus' neck. Drake almost laughed at the small creature, then he felt the tip of a blaster rifle dig into his neck. Turning slightly he could see the battered form of the other commander behind him.

Drake smirked. “Evening Sir, hope we're not interrupting anything.”

“Shut up!” The commander slammed the hilt of the blaster pistol into Drake's head, then pushed him into Marcus. The two Ghosts were corralled into a small room towards the back corner of the facility. The tables and walls were covered in dust. The room was lit by a flickering light whose color was distorted into an almost yellow shade, it dangled from the ceiling swinging from the breeze the four humanoids caused.

The noghri got to work, yanking the weapons and pieces of armor off of the two men. He was looking for something, probably concealed weapons. Marcus smiled, he was not going to find the thing that would end all of their lives, that much was clear.

“You sacks of shit have really caused me trouble today.” The commander's face was red, he paced back and forth the sweat pouring off his forehead. The smug expression on his current captives faces probably was not helping him control his anger. “Alright ass holes, who else did you bring? Did you radio this location? Cause I'm going to laugh in your ugly faces if you did.”

The commander was inches from Drake's face as he spoke, his breath stank but Seven just kept looking at him saying nothing. With a growl, the commander grabbed Drake's shirt and pushed him until they both slammed into the wall.

“You got a hearing problem there, ass wipe?” For some reason, Drake started to laugh. It began as a chuckle, then as the commander's face went from red to a shade of purple it was a full blown roar.

The commander said nothing, he looked at the medic and pulled his fist back slamming it into Drake's face as hard as he could. Drake spit and slid down to the floor as the commander let go. He stomped over to Marcus and started asking the same questions. Drake looked up and smiled as the noghri slowly walked over towards him, the long blades still drawn and looking hungry for blood.

Marcus worked his tongue around his mouth a few times and spit. He felt a tooth fly out as he watched blood cover the commanders left foot. He smiled as the man looked down and cursed loudly a second before he cocked his right arm back and smashed it into Marcus's face. He heard his jaw crack for the second time, he considered spitting again but decided against it as the man walked away.

He looked over at Drake who was being kicked around by the Field Troopers. Through the legs of a man he could see the smile on the medic's face. He grinned suddenly as the Noghri stepped forward and swung one of his blades. Marcus watched as the tip dug into his left knee cap. He groaned but did not cry out, even when the beast twisted the blade, causing his knee cap to shatter.

"You know what we want." The person who seemed to be in charge said, he had yet to identify himself. "Just tell us who else is here, and if more people are coming to die." The man walked up and motioned for the Noghri to step away. The creature grinned as he pulled out his sword slowly, Marcus breathed deeply and smiled back. The beast snarled and went to strike but stopped when he saw the upturned hand of the Commander.

"Just tell me what I want to know." He said again to Marcus, this time he leaned down and came close. He looked down at the various wounds his men had inflicted and shook his head. "It can all end, just say it."

Marcus thought over it, he considered what would happen if he told the man the truth. He wondered if word would reach his family he had broke at the last moment. He looked over at Drake, both his legs were bent at impossible angles, his right arm was laying behind his back. His left was currently being twisted around, even from across the room Marcus could hear bones snapping. He never heard Drake cry out though, only curse loudly that he wanted more pain.

Marcus looked at the man again, he worked his tongue around his mouth for a moment, acting like he was trying to clear it, so he could speak. The man leaned even closer, Marcus took a breath and spit in the man's face. He leaned back and watched as a glob of mucus and blood ran down the right side of the Commanders face. He wiped his face with a hand and shook his head slowly for a long few seconds.

Standing up he walked over to Drake and motioned his men aside. Grabbing a three foot long steel pipe he looked over at Marcus and said "Last chance, or you watch your friend die." He held the pipe over his head and waited for a long moment.

Marcus looked over at Drake and caught his friends good eye, his other one was hanging by a few pieces of vein. In fact his whole left side of his face was ruined, bits of bone and skin were hanging down to the ground.

Both men nodded once to each other, and smiled, Marcus watched as the pipe slowly made it's way to his friends head. He owed Drake enough not to turn away as it completed it's journey through his ASL's skull to end up lodged in his brain.

Drake's body shuttered once and went still. Marcus looked at the Noghri and swore "You are an honor-less dog, you will have no name, or title. You will not be permitted to come up from the depths. Curse be your name." He spit towards the creature, but as if by instinct the creature dodged it and kicked Marcus in the ribs. He heard two snaps, and felt his left lung cave in as one of his ribs punctured it.

Another kick followed the first and hurled him into the wall, he ended up almost doubled up. With all the speed he had left he reached into his right boot and pulled out a small black device. He braced himself for the third kick but none came. He looked up to see the Noghri being motioned back by one of the men.

Marcus took his time and sat back up, he could barely draw breath now. He saw blackness begin to creep around the corners of his vision. He looked over at the Commander and smiled again. The man snarled and stepped forward with the pipe, but froze when he noticed the look on the Ghosts face.

With his thumb Marcus had flipped the safety off. With the last of his strength he raised his hand and showed the detonator to the entire room. Everyone seemed to move in slow motion as he depressed the trigger. An eternity later Marcus felt the rumble through the floor and walls.

Everyone stood frozen, Marcus leaned back and breathed for the last time. Before his vision blackened completely he saw the entire ceiling collapse.
