  Elite Squadron Competition 2009 Scoring Procedures
July 5, 2009 4:47:19 PM    View the profile of Riqimo
Those of you at the meeting should have seen my announcement that we have an nice Elite Squadron Competition (ESC) coming up for you folks starting next week...  Art should get some more storyline details up later, but for right now, my job is to make sure ya'll understand (or at least know about >.>) the scoring system is.

Scoring is determined by a rating out of 100 and is designed so that everyone's activity effects everyone else's.  In other words, it is a battle of wits, will, determination, and coordination in order to bring your squadron to the top.  Activity over the entire month period is key; those who cannot keep the momentum will not hold on forever.  The squadron that can best organize to maximize output through teamwork will win.

The important numbers to remember are the weighted percentages of each category.  Within each category there is mention of points.  These points are meaningless outside the specific category.  For example, scoring 100 points in gaming is only used to give a rating for gaming and will have no bearing on any other part of the competition.  I state this because everyone's gaming and creativity points will be worth staggeringly higher than writing given the way the system works.  However points are only used to calculate ratings for that specific category of the competition.  Overall, each category is only worth a certain percentage of your total rating and as a result, points don't mean anything in that regard.  As you read the rules I hope that this will become clear.

Writing 50%
This is the staple category of all the competitions and it shouldn't come as a surprise that we've placed this as the highest category.  There are two sections, each scored separately:
  • Main Competition Storyline 35%
  • Personal Stories 15%

Each post will be graded via a slightly long process to understand (but I assure you it is an entirely accurate and fair process).  It has been tested on a pool of sample posts and I am satisfied with the results.

OOC:
There are three primary variables for use in the post scoring function (Word Count, Quality, and Content).
  • Word Count: Simple enough to work out.  Based off the word count, you get a particular score as follows:
    • 1 -> 499 words  ==> 0.5 points
    • 500 -> 749 words ==> 1.0 points
    • 750 -> 999 words ==> 1.5 points
    • 1000 -> 1249 words ==> 2.0 points
    • 1250 -> 1499 words ==> 2.5 points
    • 1500 -> 1749 words ==> 3.0 points
    • 1750 -> 1999 words ==> 3.5 points
    • 2000+ words ==> 4.0 points
  • Quality: There is only one true standard method of determining the "quality" of a piece of writing that I can agree with.  This method is the Simple Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG) Level. This number can simply be obtained by running the post through this site: http://www.harrymclaughlin.com/SMOG.htm
  • Advancement: Simple enough, all a grader has to do is determine how much "filler" a post contains.  Most graders tend to agree on this value most of the time, so I don't believe this to be overly controversial.  The following scale is used:
    • Entirely Filler ==> 0.25 modifier
    • Mostly Filler ==> 0.5 modifier
    • Half Filler / Half Content ==> 1.0 modifier
    • Most Content ==> 1.5 modifier
    • Entirely Content ==> 1.75 modifier

Now that those three variables are established, we can arrive to the final formula:
  • Points for Post = P
  • Word Count = W
  • SMOG Level = Q
  • Advancement = A

P = (WQA)/5
Quote:Using this, let's analyze a random new recruit story post (selected at random):
353 words, 3.00 SMOG level, and mostly filler.  That comes to:
(0.5*3*0.5)/5 = P = 0.15

Bit low, what about a "normal" active member's post?
927 words, 5.00 SMOG level, and mostly content.  That comes to:
(1.5*5*1.5)/5 = P = 2.25

OOC:
Bonus Points are awarded for:
  • 0.5 Points for SMOG level of 12.0
  • 1 Point for SMOG level of 15.0
  • 1 Point for Entirely Content

Gaming 25%
Gaming is something we don't see much unless competitions (like this one) roll around.  However, we are proud to announce a new concept that I'm sure most of you will be eager to sample.

Storyline Gaming - Two days out of the week, a few games will be selected for that week's storyline gaming participation.  If you play those games during that time period with the proper settings, the outcome of your game determines something that happens elsewhere in the story (basically you are directing NPCs in your game).  These games will NOT grant extra points, however they will be times for you to find a larger group of people willing to play those games.

We will provide people the ability to play others in Yahoo games, but these will only be worth a third of the points that you can gain via platform gaming.  These exist as fairness to those whom may not own (or can't play) the platform games.

OOC:

Points for Game = P
Placement = R
Individual Score = I
Combined Score (of all player participants) = C
Number of Players = N
Victory Status Modifier = V
  • 1 = Loss
  • 1.5 = Tie
  • 2 = Win
Game Type Modifier = T
  • Platform Game = 1
  • Yahoo Games = 1/3

P = [(N-R+1) + {[(I/C)*(N/2))]^(N/2)} + (V) + 1]*T
Quote:So for sake of example, assume a three player game where player one gets 4692 points, player two gets 3821 points, and player three obtains 1928 points.  The game has a normal length modifier.

Player 1 = [(3-1+1) + {[(4692/10441)*(3/2))]^(3/2)} + (2) + 1]*1 = 6.5 Points

Player 2 = [(3-2+1) + {[(3821/10441)*(3/2))]^(3/2)} + (1) + 1]*1 = 4.4 Points

Player 3 = [(3-3+1) + {[(1928/10441)*(3/2))]^(3/2)} + (1) + 1]*1 = 3.1 Points

OOC:
Bonus Points are awarded for every 5 unique wins per game per opponent.

Therefore if you defeat 4 people on one game, and 8 on another game, along with 5 folks you beat on both of those games, you have 17 unique wins.  That's 3 bonus points.

Note: For purposes of simplicity, all Yahoo Games count as a single game for determining bonus points here.  However, you only need 4 unique wins rather than 5.

Design (Graphics) 20%
Simple enough, most of you are aware of what this entails.  We will require you to submit your graphic via Comnet PM, where it will given a point value based on quality and effort.  No formula here, it's simple enough.

OOC:
Bonus Points are awarded at grader's discretion based upon the graphic's quality.

Participation 5%
If a person does something, he earns one point.  Maximum of two points per day however (Operating on Central Time zone, the VE's "standard").

So if you submit a graphic and submit a post in one day, you will gain a point for each of those.  If you submit only a personal story in a day, that's a single point for that day's participation.  If you are really awesome and submit a graphic and make 3 posts, as well as game 6 times, you will still only earn 2 points for that day.

Your total score is determined as follows:
  • {Prim} = Primary Squadron Story(Writing)
  • {Pers} = Personal Story(Writing)
  • {WriB} = Writing Bonus Points
  • {Game} = Gaming
  • {GamB} = Gaming Bonus Points
  • {Desn) = Design
  • {DesB} = Design Bonus Points
  • {Part} = Participation.

Then plug into the formula, {Max xxxx} is the highest value of points that an individual has obtained without the bonus points:

[ {Prim}/{Max Prim} * 35% + {Pers}/{Max Pers} * 15% ] + {WritB}/[{Max Prim}+{Max Pers}]/2 * 50% ] + [{Gaming} + {GamB}]/{Max Gaming} * 25% + [{Desn}+DesB}]/{Max Desn} * 20% + {Part}/{Max Part} * 5%

I hope that's all clear enough to understand.  If you have ANY questions, please feel more than free to ask here.

Each day or so I will post another piece of the back story to the ESC missions.  SCs will receive mission briefing packages by pm at the appropriate times as the ESC nears.  Tonight I will post part 2 and refresh everyone's memories about the gaming parameters.

Part I - An Important Discovery

"Enter" Arturus called from behind the desk in his office on board the VSD Relentless.

"Commander Hargraves," the ensign said as he entered the office, "Captain Yarstore requests an urgent meeting for an intelligence briefing at your earliest possible convenience."

"Did the Captain mention the nature of the briefing ensign?"

"Negative sir, only that it was top priority."

"Very well ensign, inform the Captain that he may brief me in an hour in one of the secured briefing rooms.  Dismissed"

"Aye Commander.

An hour later

“Attention!” one of the lieutenants in the room shouted as Arturus entered one of the refitted briefing rooms.

“As you were” he replied as he made his way to the head of the table.  “You may begin Captain” he said with a nod.  Captain Yastore, the man conducting the briefing, was the VENI officer in charge of intelligence gathering in the mid-rim on the other side of the galactic core.

“Thank you Commander” Captain Yastore replied.  “Sir three days ago, we received feedback from two deep space intelligence probes we launched near the Ord Vaxal system.  We had begun intelligence gathering near there to update our records; the last reliable information we had on the system was from the time of the Emperor.”

“Ord Vaxal used to be a prison planet and slave colony did it not?”  Arturus interjected.

“Yes sir although the use of the past tense would be premature.  Our intelligence gathering indicates that the planet is still the overrun prison colony it has been since before the rise of the Emperor, and that the Hutts continue to engage in an active slave trade.” The Captain continued.

“You say continue, the planet was under Imperial control, how as a slave trade run by the Hutts permitted in the first place?”

“After the Empire increased the defences on the planet with the fall of the Republic, the Imperial Moff in control of the sector and its defences, Adria Reyn, seems to have permitted the slave trade to continue by altering the planetary defences to give the Hutts a corridor of access to the planet.  The reason for this corruption was never thoroughly investigated so we are unsure of why she cooperated with the Hutts in this way.  Additionally, our information indicates that Moff Reyn is still in charge of the planet and her blockade fleet and planetary defences remain there.”

Arturus looked up from the holographic display the Captain had generated.  “There are the remains of an old Imperial force still at the planet?  How is it that it and the planet seem to be living in the past?”

“We have reason to believe that the colony was mostly forgotten sir.  I say mostly, because our probes detected several quick communications bursts disguised as routine energy blips.  Our people managed to begin to decrypt both the origin and the content of the transmissions.  In addition, before they self-destructed, the probes began to build a record of ships to enter and leave the system and those that landed on the planet.  We think that in addition to the Hutts, NRI may being using the planet as a prison planet of their own, and that they may have paid off Moff Reyn like we suspect the Hutts did although we cannot be certain on that point.”

“The Moff must be an old woman now”

“She’s in her seventies commander but still very much in charge as far as we were able to tell.  Her fleet, well old and starting to fall apart, is also still together.”

“So basically Captain, you are telling me that we have an old prison planet guarded by a renegade Imperial Moff that may be back in use as a dumping ground only this time for NR Intelligence?  I wonder if the NR high command knows of what their people are using this planet for, it goes against the very principles upon which they attacked the Galactic Empire.”

“Rebel scum have no principles Commander; their hypocrisy should not be surprising,.”

“Perhaps not Captain, but nevertheless, what you have found here may present us both with a propaganda opportunity to weaken support in soft pro-NR systems near us, as well as the chance to add desperately needed firepower to the defensive fleet.  We need to figure out a way to get to Moff Reyn.”

“Most of those ships are probably in severe disrepair and the crews will be quite old now.  They may even be down to skeleton crews.”

“Even if we only use the ships for spare parts it would be a boost.  Besides, people we have, ship building takes time and is expensive.  I want you to prepare a full report and action recommendations to be on my desk in six hours, I will personally visit the Admiral and brief him.  This is a priority 1 project with the highest level classification.  Also get me everything you can on Moff Reyn, her service record as a Moff, her political beliefs if any, any family and financial records that you can find, and anything else of use that can possibly explain her actions to this point or provide us with an opening to get her to change sides, assuming she has actually been turned.  Get me your best assessment of who NRI may be sending to the planet, how long this practice has been ongoing, and anything else about NRI operations in the area that you can find.”

“Aye Commander” the captain responded, standing with the others as Arturus rose from his chair.

“Well done, dismissed”

“Thank you sir”
