Till Death Us Do Part (character development)

Karash had some how managed to get some time off from working and was looking forward to just relaxing over the next few days having absolutely nothing to do but chill. He entered his empty room and saw a message had been left on his communication device; Karash walked over to the machine and played the message.

“Cousin so good to speak to you again…” It was Herrick, Karash had left Herrick in charge of the family business the last time they meet they were being attacked by loads of mercenaries. “…I have excellent news! Ellia, my daughter, is getting married and you are invited, be at the estate as soon as you can.” The fat mans chins wobbled as he spoke.

That was all Karash needed when he was just going to have the perfect few days, he now had to go and see the family he resented so much and spend the next few days being pleasant to them. Karash had not seen Ellia since they were children and could not stand having to see his great aunt Bloral, who was possibly the most evil old hag in the universe.

Karash began to send a message back to Herrick, “Hello Herrick I would be delighted to join you, could you please send a transport for me.”

“Do not worry your transport is already waiting for you, don’t bother to pack too much we have everything you will need.” Herrick’s fat once again began to wobble as he bounced slightly in excitement.

The conversation was ended there, Karash just through a few things in a bag and made his was over to the transport dock on the other side of the city. Once he had reached the lavish transport that was waiting for him he began to wonder why he had agreed to go but he had the whole journey to think about that.

---Several Hours Later---

The journey had been an uneventful one which was a shame because Karash was hoping that something would come up so he wouldn’t have to go; the estate that Karash had lived on was coming into sight. The place did not look the same; Karash’s father did not bother to up keep it and Karash did not own it long enough for anything to be done. However Herrick had updated it because the place sparkled as it did when Karash’s mother was alive and it was busy with many people running around.

“What are all those people doing?” Karash asked the pilot.

“They are preparing for Lad Ellia’s marriage; her father has planned a lot.” The pilot replied.

People were coming into view now and Karash could see Herrick and two women waiting at the dock, with many servants scurrying around them. The ship had landed and Karash took one last deep breathe before stepping out on to the estate Karash could barley recognise.

“Cousin so good to see you and you look so well, the army must be treating you good.” Herrick exclaimed in his usual over the top manner.
“Herrick you are looking prosperous and what a job you have done with the estate,” Karash replied.

“Not only with the estate but the business too!” Herrick shouted.

Karash gave a look reminding his cousin of the previous events but Herrick seemed to ignore it and began to introduce the two women next to him.

“This is my wife Larla, isn’t she beautiful we have only been married a year,” Herrick said giving a suggestive smile.

“A pleasure to meet you Larla.” Karash kissed the woman on the check before turning to Herrick and saying “What is she number six?”

Once again he ignored the remark and moved on to the young woman next to his wife. “I am sure you remember your cousin Ellia, after all you used to spend so much time together as children.”

“Of course, it’s been too long Ellia.” Karash hugged his cousin.

“Lovely to see you again Karash!” Ellia said with the same excitement as her father.

“Now with the introductions over come into the house the rest of the family are their and Great Aunt Bloral can’t wait to see you.” Herrick said.

“I bet the old hag can’t” whispered Karash.

As the small group of people made their way back to the main building Karash could not help but notice the amount of people that were cleaning, painting, building, arranging flowers and even erecting statues. Herrick must be spending a massive sum of money on the event which leads Karash to believe the prospective husband must be very rich.

“Come here boy! NOW!” a shrill voice boomed, it was indeed Bloral in the most hideous floral dress and hat with a bright red handbag.

“Great aunt.” Karash said, extending his hands to hug her.

“Don’t touch me I don’t know where you’ve been!” she once again boomed.

Karash then sunk a little within himself and realised what hell this next few days would be.

“Don’t worry, you’ll like Gradon.” Whispered Ellia obviously referring to her husband to be.

‘Oh well’ Karash thought, ‘how bad can it be?’

“How are you Great Aunt?” asked Karash.

“That boy is none of your concern, where did you run off to again, join the circus wasn’t it?” Bloral scowled at Karash with a great sense of malice.

“No, I joined the army.” Karash replied.

“They must be desperate if they are accepting pathetic specimens such as you. I knew you father shouldn’t have left you in charge or that fat idiot.” She said gesturing towards Herrick.

“Always a pleasure aunt.” Karash said with the sarcasm becoming apparent.

The old woman then became extremely agile and flew round whacking Karash on the arm with her walking stick, she then turned and limped off in the direction of the bar mumbling about how she was surrounded by ingrates.

“She hasn’t changed.” Said  Karash.

“She always was miserable, only her kids were good enough to run the business but never mind about her come and meet Gradon.” Ellia said glowing with excitement.

Karash could remember Bloral’s children they were evil bullies they always used to beat up Karash and steal anything he had and Bloral would always blame him for being a bad influence on her babies. One was now running a crime syndicate and the other was in prison but he wasn’t meant to know that.

“What does Gradon do?” asked Karash.

“He is a business man, him and father are planning to merge the businesses.” replied Ellia.

Karash suddenly why Herrick was slaying on all this luxury for his daughters wedding, because it had the ability to make him even richer than he already was; this was the tell tell sign that Herrick came from Karash’s fathers side of the family. Never the less Gradon must have been very rich and powerful because the walls were lined with statues and ribbons and every room Karash passed had fine furniture, food, drink, music and in some there were fountains and ice sculptures. It look as though a Imperial banquet was happening, now Karash really was interested in meeting Gradon, to find out exactly what he does.

“Here he is!” screeched Ellia. At which point she ran over to the man in the corner of the room and passionately kissed him. “Gradon meet my cousin Karash.”

“Nice to meet you Gradon.” Said Karash shaking his hand.

“Karash, I’ve heard so much about you. I hear you are in the army.” The man said with a great grin on his face. Karash could he was a business man because of that awful sales grin.

Gradon then turned to Ellia whispered something into her ear to which she nodded and then ran off back out of the room. Karash drew himself up to his full height because he was unnerved as to why they had been left alone.

“Karash come and sit down, I want to talk to you about something.” Said Gradon pointing at two seats.

Karash went over and sat down still clasping his pistol that was concealed under his shirt, “What is this about?”

“Well, I own a business similar to yours and to that end this marriage would see the unification of the two.” Gradon had put on that salesman smile again. “And as I am sure you know Herrick has decided to sell me his share of the business.”

“What?” Karash was now listening to his full ability.

“I am sorry if you didn’t know but he wishes to take early retirement, so could you please sell me you share…”

“No I will not. I may not be here in the day to day running of the business but it has been in my family for generation and will be here for generations to come!” Karash said instantly standing up.

“Your family is stagnant, they have not made any significant growth in years and I will be able to expand this business beyond your imagination.” Gradon also stood up the grin disappearing from his face.

Ellia then came back into the room and instantly noticed the tension but did not say anything because of the look she was getting from Gradon. Karash did not stay to watch the conversation; he stormed off to find where that idiot Herrick was and sort him out.

“Boy, come here!” boomed Bloral.

“Shut up you old buzzard,” Karash barked.

The old woman stood for a moment in shock and then began to shout and thrash about on the spot but no one paid any attention because she quite often did such things. Karash didn’t really care because now Herrick was in sight and he was about to get the full brunt of Karash’s anger.

“Herrick!” Karash shouted.

The fat man tried to run away from his cousin but it was unsuccessful as he ran into a door. He looked as if he was about to have a heart attack.

“Cousin I’m sorry, but I don’t want to spend the rest of my life working.” Herrick was visibly squealing.

“Why? The business has been in the family for generations and I left you in charge.” Said Karash.

“You ran from the business, why can’t I?” Herrick replied taking a superior stance.

“Besides that Gradon is a horrible man and you are not acting in the best interests of your daughter but the best way to line you pocket.” Karash ignored Herrick’s previous statement.

“How dare you two little ingrates talk to me in such away…” Bloral had entered the room.

Karash and Herrick both told her where to go before continuing to argue, they went on for another twenty minuets before coming to an end.

“You can’t let the marriage go ahead!” shouted Karash.

“You have no say in the matter Karash and you don not have to sell your share of the business, now get dressed the wedding is at dusk.” At which point Herrick turned and left the room.

“The wedding is today?” Karash asked himself. This was about to turn very bad for everyone involved. Bloral was still fuming, Herrick was about give his daughter to a man who only wanted the money and poor Ellia was going to spend the rest of her life in horrible relationship. But what could Karash do about it now, he had to go and get dressed the wedding was in only 3 hours.

Karash sat in the grand hall of the estate with the rest of his and Gradon’s family, none of whom new what was really going on here; a plot to sell the business and leave poor Ellia in an awful relationship.

“How dare you and that fat fool Herrick talk to like you did! If my sons were here they would…” she was interrupted as the Bride entered.

“Why am I next to her?” Karash asked himself.

Ellia walked down the aisle followed by hordes of bridesmaids and ushers, not to mention her real mother, her father and her step-parents; Bloral made it her place to comment on everybody’s clothes even though she was in a bright pink dress with black flowers and lime green hat and handbag.

“Do you Ellia Maras Norgath take Gradon Grahum Glon to be you lawful wedded husband…” The priest said and continued in the usual manner.

Karash could see the deceitful smirk on Gradon’s face growing with every syllable getting closer to the binding words and to when he could get his grubby little words on Karash’s business. When Gradon’s name was read a second time he let out a little laugh when he heard the priest said “Grahim,” instead of “Grahum”; he wished the Gungan was here now to liven things up.

“Thank god it’s nearly over, I need a drink.” Said Bloral a loudly as she could.

“Hmm.” Replied Karash.

“I wasn’t speaking to you, you little ingrate!” once again as loudly as she could.

Just as the priest was coming to the end of the service there was an almighty explosion which blew all of the windows out of their frames sending glass everywhere. This was followed by several flash bang grenades that sent the 200 hundred or so people there in to a panic. But this was not the worst because next was the small army of troops that can in from every known entrance to the building.

“Everybody please remain calm, we are only here for a few of you.” The man, clearly in charge, announced.

This did no good as people began to scatter and stampede from the room; most of the people got away but a select few were restrained. The man in charge had come down from the window seal and was ordering men to strop the rest from leaving and prevent anyone getting help.

“Right everybody, I am Colonel Haines. We do not want to kill just ransom you all for money.” The man said glancing over to where Bloral and Karash where standing.

As the Colonel walked over to the two of them, Bloral pushed Karash in front of her. “How can we help?” asked Karash.

“Who are these two?” the colonel asked on of his lackeys.
“I am Karash Norgath and this is my Aunt Bloral. Now what do you want with us?!” asked Karash, in a more demanding tone.

“Karash, the owner of the company how delightful.” The man was too polite for Karash’s liking.

Bloral then pushed her way forward and began to shout in the Colonels face. “How dare you! We are Norgath’s! My father was a friend of a powerful General! My sons will have your head!” She then moved to hit the man but she was stopped by one of his bodyguards who knocked her out.

Karash giggled for a minute and then realised what he had done. “That was completely unnecessary, she is an old woman.”

“You are quite right, that was uncalled for.” The Colonel then turned and shot the man to his right dead.

The crowd stood in shock for a moment before once again trying make a run for it but then the soldiers erupted into a volley of fire, they then killed someone; Karash could see who it was because he had just taken out his blaster and shot a trooper.

“Gradon!” Ellia screamed.

Once Karash had heard the noise he didn’t really care and used this opportunity to send a message on his comm device to the Kuati armed forces, he had just managed to do it when the Colonel snatched both from him.

“I am sorry that the man had to die, my bosses won’t be pleased because no the price will have gone down.” The colonel shrugged and started to send a message to an unknown person.

“Who the hell are these people?” Thought Karash. He knew things were going to get worse before they got better.

Karash stood and observed the room; Aunt Bloral was still unconscious from her little attack, Herrick was pacing up and down the room looking very distressed and Ellia was with her mother sobbing by Gradon’s body. There was also the colonel who was just standing there looking out the window and occasionally turning to a make sure that no one was trying to escape.

Karash walked up to Herrick and began to whisper. “What have you done? Why are they here and why do they think a debt needs to be collected from us?!” Karash was losing his temper.

“I do not know, I swear cousin I have not got into any debt.” Herrick was very distant and did not seem to be paying much attention.

“What’s you problem?” asked Karash.

Herrick gave Karash a look that symbolised “DUH!” but he continued to speak noe the less “It’s ruined, it’s all ruined.”

“What?” Karash was intrigued by now.

“I can’t retire with Gradon dead; his family won’t want the business now. I’ll have to continue to work.”

The rage in Karash exploded out of him “You stand there complaining that you can’t retire whilst your daughter is heart broken and we will be lucky to survive! You pathetic little…” Karash raised a hand to Herrick.

The colonel grabbed Karash’s hand and held it for a moment before saying “I do love a family occasion.”

He then threw Karash to the ground and pushed Herrick down with him; they lay on the floor for a moment staring at each other before Karash had the courage to say “Sorry Herrick, but is worked.

Herrick sat and looked very puzzled for a moment before hearing the roar of several large vehicles outside the estate.

“Everyone get down!” Karash shouted.

Ellia, her mother and Herrick’s new wife all dropped to floor immediately but the men holding them hostage took slightly longer to do so, this would prove to be a bad idea. Several armed police officers flew in through the halls main door and the windows that the colonel’s men had destroyed, all around the building the same thing was happening.

“Men open fire but do not harm one of the hostages!” The colonel had lost all sense of control and was firing at what ever moved, even his own men.

Karash leapt up from the ground and snatched his stolen pistol from the colonels’ hands and held it to his throat. “Now colonel, don’t think of going anywhere.”
The police force had once again taken control of Norgath manner and rescued all those within it. Surprisingly not many people were dead only Gradon and handful of police officers but it was not too bad. Bloral was no longer unconscious and they were just waiting for her to be taken to hospital, Karash was actually pleased to here that she was not dead. The real problem now was that he had to find out who hired the colonel and why.

“Who hired you?!” Karash went straight to it as he could not be bothered with the small talk.

“My we are determined, it unfortunate that the persons name slips my mind.” The colonel smirked.

“I will kill you, if you do not tell me!” Karash looked as though he was losing it but secretly he was in complete control.

“What with all the police around, I’m off to s nice cell where I will be rescued by my people.” The colonel continue d smirk.

“You seem to forget who I am, I am one of the richest men on this planet and the police will do as I say. The question is will you?”

The colonel was flinching know with the stark realisation that he could die. “I am the leader of a mercenary army that is used by the galaxies criminal underworld, but I promise you that I do not know who my employer is.” He seemed to be telling the truth.

“Any detail you have would be very beneficial for you.” Karash pushed the gun against his head slightly harder.

“It was a Neimoidian who said he was working for a greater cause. That is all I know.” He was squirming now and Karash knew that he didn’t know any more.

“Take him.” Karash said to one of the officers waiting to load the last prisoner up.

Karash knew who the colonel referred to because they had met before; it was Rune the Neimoidian who had seized control of Karash’s business. The last they had met Karash sent him away promising to kill him if their paths ever crossed again but unfortunately he was not here. The colonel had mentioned that they were being held to raise money that Rune’s organisation had lost to a Norgath, but what could this possibly mean?

One thing Karash did know is that this would not be the last time Rune and Karash would become involved with one another but Karash had a duty to sort out his family before going back to the relative comfort of the army.

Karash could see that the family he didn’t particularly like was devastated by the events that had occurred over the last few days but there was something in him that knew he had to sort it all out. First on the list was Ellia, she was heart broken after the murder of Gradon; Karash did not like Gradon and he knew that Gradon did not love Ellia but he could not see Ellia so upset.

“You alright?” Karash knew it was a stupid question but said it anyway.

“I… I’m fine.” She sobbed slightly.

“If there is anything I can do…” Karash did not have time to finish his sentence.

“I know that he didn’t want me, I know father had promised him the business and I know that it would have been wrong to marry him but it seemed to be my only choice.” Ellia’s bottom lip was beginning to tremble and looked as though she was going to burst into tears.

“He wasn’t any good, was a cruel horrible person who would have made your life hell. You have probably had a lucky escape.” Karash was regretting what he had just said. “Look at it another way if he wasn’t the one, he is still out there somewhere. So go and find him.”

“I suppose you are right. No you are right.” Ellia picked up immediately and stopped crying.

“Well Ellia I am leaving now.” Karash hugged his cousin and then made his way over to Herrick.

Herrick was standing in main hall where the statues and portraits of all the former Norgath’s stood. He was looking up at them with a great sense of regret.

“Herrick come here!” Karash ordered.

Herrick turned to reveal tears rolling down his cheeks. “Cousin look what I’ve done; Ellia is heartbroken, the house is ruined and I was just going to leave.”

“Pull yourself together man!” Karash did not know how to deal with Herrick, so he did it as his Father would have. “You are a Norgath, you have to rebuild your family and make sure the business survives.”

“I can’t I am not you or your father.” Herrick looked shocked as to how Karash was speaking to him.

“That is why you are the right man for the job. You have already raised your family and now you must protect it, you have built the business up to beyond anything I could have.”

“But…” Herrick stuttered.

“No buts, you have to stay here and fight for what you want because things are going to get a lot worse before they get better!” Karash exclaimed.

“What do you mean?” Herrick asked.

“I don’t know myself but rest assured that we do need you. Now goodbye Herrick.” Karash turned and walked away.

As Karash walked out of the main door and towards the transport dock, Ellia and Herrick stood at the door and waved him off. The sky was once again setting on the Norgath mansion but the question Karash’s mind was “Will it ever rise again?”

“BOY! Come here!” A shrill voice boomed.

“Yes aunt are you feeling better.” Karash said referring to Bloral.

“Do think what you did changes anything, you are still the pitiful little twerp you always were.” Bloral said scornfully.

“I wouldn’t have it any other way.” Karash said.

Bloral was then escorted on to her own ship that was taking her back to the old people accommodation, however as she got on to the transport she shot a look at Karash and smiled; for the first time in his life Bloral looked normal.

“Sir.” A man said waiting to fly Karash home.

Karash looked at him and only hoped that the army was not going to be as mad as his family.

OOC:
And its finished.
