Naval Gaming Board - Input Requested

I am beginning a project to implement a gaming system for the Navy in order to create a structure and rewards system for members who choose to include gaming as part of their naval activity.  This is designed for platform games only, so unfortunately yahoo and candystand games will not count.

There will be a stickied thread on the Naval comnet where the gaming rules will be posted, and members can post completed games.  All that is asked is you post the participants and the scores.  Wins will be tallied for the Crusader's Laurel, a medal similar to the Writing Commendation only awarded for platform game wins (in all platform games within the VE, and external competitions such as ORW).  Where possible, previous competitions have been tallied in order to begin a running total of gaming wins and this will be updated as we find more information from the past.  You may post games played with members of the army, but they must be played in accordance with the rules for navy gaming.

For the rules, input is required.  I am not familiar with all of our platform games, and do not know the settings that make for a normal match.  As a sample, here would be the rules for a game I am familiar with, JO:

1v1 Duels - first to 5
FFA - first to 10 (guns, sabers, or guns and sabers)
2v2 - first to 20 (3v3 first to 30, 4v4 first to 40, etc)
CTF - first to 5 or 20 minutes, whichever comes first (normal or instagib)

If members could post what would be considered normal competition rules for games such as EaW, etc. that would be greatly appreciated.  I will compile these and post them on the new gaming board in the comnet.

As for the Crusader's Laurel, this is what the medal is:

Level 1 - 10 platform game wins

The recipient receives a level 1 ribbon and a laurel of artificial greens weaved with purple cloth.

Level 2 - 25 platform game wins

The recipient receives a level 2 ribbon and a laurel of bronze tipped artificial greens weaved with purple cloth and thin bronze trim.

Level 3 - 50 platform game wins

The recipient receives a level 3 ribbon and a laurel of silver tipped artificial greens weaved with purple cloth and thin silver trim.

Level 4 - 100 platform game wins

The recipient receives a level 4 ribbon and a laurel of gold tipped artificial greens weaved with purple cloth and thin gold trim.

Level 5 - 150 platform game wins

The recipient receives a level 5 ribbon and a laurel of platinum tipped artificial greens weaved with purple cloth and thin platinum trim.

level 6 - 200 platform game wins

The recipient receives a level 6 ribbon and a laurel of platinum tipped artificial greens weaved with purple cloth and thin platinum trim with a large diamond with gold fitting in the front.

Level 7 - 250 platform game wins

The recipient receives a level 7 ribbon and a laurel of platinum tipped artificial greens weaved with purple cloth and thin platinum trim with a large emerald with gold fitting in the front.

Level 8 - 250 platform game wins

The recipient receives a level 8 ribbon and a laurel of platinum tipped artificial greens weaved with purple cloth and thin platinum trim with a large ruby with gold fitting in the front.

To date, I can say that Tomas has been awarded a 2nd Level Laurel with 45 wins (40 in ORW3 and 5 in the HSC 2008).  Congratulations to him.

In your id lines, the Crusader's Laurel will be [CL:1] where the 1 will be replaced with the appropriate level of your laurel.

Come on guys, giving this input isn't hard.  If you want to help activity in the navy then take the time to make a quick post so we can implement this project.

To be honest, I really don't game. The idea just doesn't appeal to me that much, and I suck at it. Not much to say.

I'm not asking for a list of people who are interested in gaming or who play certain games.  The purpose of this thread is to solicit advice and information on rules guidelines for gaming.  I do not own most of the platform games, and therefore do not know what the best settings would be for a game to count for this.  For those who own these games (aside from JO which I have covered and you can use as a guide), can you play post suggested guidelines.

Sorry guys, didn't notice this till now...

Just a comment ... why don't we use the Battle Board that is already in place to track these wins rather than a ComNet topic?

Also, for other games:

EaW is generally just one match (usually Space as its more fun), heroes on or off.

I can't remember what the typical reinforcement count is for BF/BFII.

Those are the only games I really play other than JO, so can't really help with any others.

You could try implementing an AAR system as well with this. (AAR = After Action Reports).

For those who don't know, AAR's are most often used in on external forums for various games, mainly simulations or strategy games. The purpose is to basically write a piece of short-fiction based on the game/mission/battle the player just did, a 'novelisation' if you will.

E.G I play a match of Empire at War, and then I write a short story about it from the perspective of the fleet commander or someone else. If Someone played a match of JO, then they could role-play as one of the combatants. (And since these AAR's probably wouldn't be VE canon in the strictest sense, they don't full under the jurisdication of the DJO).

Same kind of system could be implemented here for extra reqards and incentives, and it also brings back the role-playing element. Obviously it would be completely optional, but givent he right incentives (and I mean more then just a medal), then it could just add a little flavour to gaming.

Just a thought.

To address Tomas' point, we certainly can use the battle board.  However, it is not at 0 and I do not believe it covers every platform game (nor does it cover the settings we might use).  People are encouraged to use it, but I would ask that they report matches on the threat I create so I can tally them easily for the purpose of the Crusader's Laurel.

As for Ibram's idea, I think that is a fascinating one.  We wouldn't implement that immediately as I want to see active gaming become entrenched in the navy first.  This might be useful for competitions as a writing option on top of gaming.  It's food for thought at any rate.
