Heh. Linux isn't an operating system - It's a Kernel.
If your interested in linux, you should take a look at some of the major distros like Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, etc.
Game compatibility is an issue because games are made for windows.
You might also have hardware issues if your hardware doesn't come with linux drivers and there are no fixes on the net. Vast Imperial Stormtrooper Corps

Ubuntu is probably the best for the common guy followed by Fedora Core. Debian and a number of others are more complex and are less user friendly, that is unless you are computer savvy then you shouldn't have any problems.
For first time Linux users, definitely go for Ubuntu or Fedora.
Also, if you are really worried about gaming on it, there are a few Linux distros that have the ability to run windows software. There is one that you have to pay for, but it isn't bad. I used it way back when it was under the name 'lindows' but not since. It is called Linspire and it is 50 bucks for it.
Also, if you don't want to install it to your hard drive you can check out a number of live cds. Knoppix is one of the most common live cds out there. A number of live cds are designed specifically for one purpose. gParted is a live cd focused for hard drive partitioning.
If you are looking for a distro that is small and can fit on say a 512 flash drive I would suggest looking at DSL (Damn Small Linux) it's a really nice small distro.

Get Ubuntu (latest version)

My uncle's a CS guy (programmer), and he uses Ubuntu on his home computer.
If you're into looking into your folders via command line/box, then by all means get Ubuntu. I like my Windows Explorer. :P Stormtrooper Corps

Ubuntu is a great Distro. Certain games will still be available to you (UT, Quake4, ET:QW), some may run under Wine, which is a compatibility layer ( List of supported apps.) I always had a good time with linux, apart from certain small kinks I didn't like. If you like a little adventure in your OS, go with it. You will be surprised how good it is. Jester Squad
