I have an acer as well, overheats all the time, that's the main thing I hate about it.
Cooling pad should work to a point, if you change the power settings to "Power Saver" when you aren't doing anything intensive on the computer, it should slow the heat a bit as well.
If you can't get a cooling pad or something, at the least elevate the back of it up by an inch or so with a book, should let some air get underneath it and help some.
If you have a spare monitor and aren't being mobile with it, hook the monitor up and use that instead of the laptop screen, should also produce less heat. (That's a last resort measure though).
