“Whats the next step, Where's everyone else?”

Jager sat down, still puffing on the cigarette. Jori sneaked a peek outside the tent flap and saw no one in sight.

“Kami, Vasili, and Bright are right outside this camp. They sent me to find you before they made their move.”

Jager nodded and continued puffing. Jori just looked off into space, searching for an idea. If only he could find it.

Maybe we can walk out of here alive with Skyus. We can go out the back of the tent and sneak out, but we would probably get caught before we made it out of the tent. Hmm… what is a  way we can smuggle Skyus out. Think Jori, think. Let’s just face it were as trapped as Skyus is trapped in that box. Wait…

“I got it!” Jori said excitedly.

“What is it?” Jager snapped.

“Does that box have a lock on it?” Jori asked.

“Yeah… why?” Jager said slowly.

“Perfect. I have a plan. Listen. First, we…” Jori said.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Five minutes later…

“Are we all set?” Jager asked.

“Yeah. Now let’s go.” Jori exited first with Jager behind him.

Walking through the streets was easier than they expected. All they had to do was keep their footing and try to look like they were actually doing their job and even though carrying a six foot box with a six and a half foot man inside was slightly difficult, they managed to do it almost perfectly. They were stopped on the outskirts of the camp by a guard.

“What are you doing? And where are you going? And what is in the box?” the guard said.

“We are carrying this box of ordnance outside of the camp so we can set traps for the intruders.” Jager said.

“I’m going to have to check the box. Now step aside.” the guard moved forward as he said it.

Jori stepped forward and blocked his way. As the guard towered over him, Jori tried his best not to look scared. He succeeded.

“No. I don’t think you want to do that. These things are highly volatile… that means they real easy to go boom-boom. Now, you could see us when we were walking. Did we trip or stumble one time? No, I didn’t think so. You see, we were scared of dropping these explosives that we were extra careful and I don’t want you to blow us all the way to the Core just because you had to obey every order you are given. Now, why don’t you step aside and let us be on our way before our hands cramp up and we drop the box.” Jori said.

Jager stared ahead, obviously trying not to laugh at the ridiculous story that only a simpleton would actually believe. He was surprised when the guard stepped aside and waved them on past.

Yes. We are free. And we have Skyus. Mission accomplished.

Jori glanced behind them as Jager commed Kami, and saw that the guy who had given Skyus to him was talking to the guard.

[/i]Son of a b-[/i]

“Hey! You there! Stop!” a loud voice said.

“Uh yeah. Sorry Kami, but I’m have to go.” Jager said quickly as he and Jori broke out into a quick jog.

Soon, they were flat out running. Risking a quick glance, Jori saw that they had widened the gap and were now almost out of sight. Looking back forward, he saw that Kami and Vasili were waving from in front of the treeline, urging them to hurry. Jori kept looking and saw Bright and Private First Class Keyel from the 82nd walk up behind. When they reached the small group, Kami motioned for them to follow and they ran into the trees. Running into a clearing, Jori saw a transport waiting for them. Opening the box and letting Skyus out, they jumped on board and were gone.

There. Story ended.

OOC:
Not so fast young grasshopper

Not far from the Camp, things weren’t going as swell as they were for Jester. Maze had been hunkered down in a ditch for a felt eternity, while E-Webs from the Mercs were slowly churning through dirt and men alike. From his position he could make out at least 2 casualties, brave troopers led to death by an incompetent NCO.
Even now, when they were clearly pinned down and could only hope for the mercs to lose interest, Quelen was still yelling at them to push forward.

Another burst of fire went over their heads, from the rate of fire Maze assumed that by now they were being flanked. And still Quelen was yelling.

“CHARGE YOU MAGGOTS”, he yelled, but none of his remaining troopers moved. Even though they might have had faith in him as well, their lack of action made clear that by now he wouldn’t get them to follow his orders.

And as if this wasn’t bad enough, Quelen realized this the exact same second. Once again they heard him over com. And even though the raging anger was gone, the coldness in his voice was more frightening than facing a rancor..

“Move Soldiers, because if you won’t I will shoot you for mutiny. Now man up and charge.”, he did almost whisper.

This was too much. Daring acts were often expected from a Stormtrooper, and Maze had no problem with that, but this was suicide, and everyone knew it. Gripping his DL-22 and bracing for impact he opened up a Comchannel.

Speaking slowly and as steadily as he could he said: “Senior Sergeant, I hereby relieve you off your duty. Stand down and follow my...”

He didn’t get to finish the sentence, as Quelen crashed into him, sending both of them in the mud again. It wasn’t pretty. Maze had lost the blaster pistol the second Quelen had hit him, and it looked like it was going to be a simple but brutal brawl.

No member of 82nd Squad interfered, but the fists hitting his helmet kept Maze from figuring out why not.

While Quelen was unleashing a flurry of blows Maze desperately tried to get ahold of the Knife in the small of his back and block the attacks at the same time. That there was no space to maneuver worked to Quelens advantage. Even if he tried, Maze couldn’t get them to roll around so he could gain the upper hand. Still his opponent was punishing him for his rebellious demeanor. Every hit made the Falleen a little dizzier.

Then, when Maze was not far from fainting, the Senior Sergeant passed for the fraction of a second. Getting the knife out of the sheath all it took was a quick hook to ram it into Quelens artery. Grabbing  his neck the now dying Squadleader of 82nd made the fatal mistake of pulling the knife out in panic. Blood sprayed out in pulsing fountains, soiling Quelen, the mud, and mostly Maze.

After five seconds that seemed like an eternity Maze had gotten to grips with what he had just done, and what it could lead to. But the court martial he had to expect was only hypothetical as long as they were still pinned down.

“Ok folks, I’ll take it from here.”, he said through the comm, trying to act as confident as he could. Because if the soldiers found out that  he didn’t really have a clue what to do as well, all of them were as good as dead.

Maze sat up and allowed himself to think for almost twenty seconds. Finally he knew what to do. He opened up a com channel and hoped that luck was on his side.

“Sharpe, do you read me? You know who I am, and I am in quite some trouble as of now. We are pinned down one click to the northwest of you, and we got at least 2 E-Webs at 12 o’ clock I need a marksman, ASAP!”, he yelled into the mic, switching of the voice distortion halfway through.

Kami didn’t say a word, but the affirmative double click was the best sound Maze had heard in ages.

Gripping his E-11 tightly he nodded to the troopers who he supposed to be looking at him with mixed feeling. As cheery as he could Maze said:”Cavalry is on its way. We’re almost out of here.”

Waiting down in the ditch for almost five minutes, Maziel was on the brink of cracking. But all of a sudden the E-Webs fell silent, and Brightstars voice was heard over the open com channel: “82nd, this is Brightstar. Enemy E-Webs are down, I repeat, the E-Webs are down. You can come out of the ditch. We’re going home.”

Picking up its dead, Maze carrying Quelen, the 82nd emerged from the ditch and followed Brightstar on the double. When they arrived at the transport, Maze felt the Eyes of Kami upon him. He knew that she had already figured what had happened one click away. As there was no use in fighting the inevitable the Falleen took off his helmet, laid his weapons onto the ground and held his hands out so he could be cuffed.

It took her a while to react, but then Kami finally pulled out the Handcuffs and bound the Falleen, nodding after she was done. The total silence in which this happened made the whole scene seem even more unreal. Nodding himself Maze walked up towards the shuttle and sat down on one of the benches. This wasn’t the return he had expected.

Merrick raised her eyebrows and looked from Kami to Maze. The latter still wore the handcuffs that Kami had placed him in while boarding the retrieval shuttle. Maze had his head low, apparently ashamed of himself. Kami and Merrick left him with a couple of guards and entered Merrick’s office to talk.

“Well I have already had reports from the 82nd, Kams, evidence from the troopers. I don’t think any of them will object if we forego the trial and just let him have it.”

Kami nodded and sighed. “Well then, on to the next matter. I assume you’ve already looked at the rest of Jester’s mission reports..” she paused briefly and Merrick nodded. “I’m concerned about Jori’s... I think he’s trying to cover something up by falsifying his report in the extreme. There’s nothing too unusual about Jager’s... for Jager.”

Merrick nodded again. “Send him to see me, don’t tell him what it’s about.” She held up a hand as Kami started to protest. “I know it’s your place but you’ll have your hands full with Maze for the moment and this one’s a little more sensitive. If he’s trying to hide something, he may be the one who should be in restraints.”

Kami salute as she stood to leave, making Merrick sigh before she stood and returned it. Merrick’s assistant informed the Jester leader that Maze had been taken to a holding cell, pending the XO’s decision regarding a court martial. She was lucky enough to pass Jori on her way to the cells, his mouth hanging open as he watched Maze being escorted away. She prodded him and sent him to Merrick’s office, trying to make her voice light and casual. He looked frightened anyway, saluted and jogged back the way Kami had come.

----

Merrick was seated behind her desk when the clerical assistant ushered Jori into her office.

“Ahh, Jori.. have a seat.” Merrick didn’t look up as Jori entered.

He saluted stiffly and sat at attention in the chair opposite Merrick. He stared straight ahead, waiting silently for her to speak again. Putting down the data pad she had been working on, she met his gaze.  He looked scared, but she kept her chuckle to herself. They’d never met, so she could only assume that her reputation was alive and well.

“Any idea why you are here trooper?”

Jori barely shook his head enough for her to see the movement. He was startled by the data pad she tossed across the desk to land in front of him. Not looking away from her, he picked it up and quickly glanced at its contents. Fear caught up with him then; it was his mission report.

“Any errors in that? Anything you’d like to change?” Merrick kept her tone friendly, but the kid looked terrified. Definitely hiding something, but what could be so bad? Jager had left it out completely, so it either didn’t matter to him or Jori was blowing something tiny way out of proportion. They sat in silence for a minute, Jori still holding the data pad gingerly as if it might bite him.

Merrick broke the silence first. “I’m sure you are aware it’s not advisable to falsify your mission reports. You must also be aware that the mission was classed as successful, so minor mistakes are more likely to be ah... overlooked... if any were made. Still nothing to say about that?” She pointed lazily towards the pad. Jori dropped it back on the desk and a flood of words finally broke his silence.

“I’m sorry sir... ma’am... I couldn’t think of anything else and I didn’t know what else to do but I didn’t want you to know that I’d...” Merrick raised an eyebrow as he came to an abrupt stop.

“That you had what, trooper?”

He tensed again and looked as if he might flee, before almost whispering, “bribed the guards, ma’am.”

Merrick’s sudden outburst of laughter scared the Private to the point where he flinched noticeably. “Well that sure explains why Jager didn’t think it fit to report. Son, so long as it works and you don’t get put behind bars for it, I don’t care if you bribe a nun while you’re on a mission. I do, however, care if you lie to your superiors. See that it doesn’t happen again or I’ll make sure you get a nice imaginative punishment.” Merrick laughed again, causing Jori to jump yet again. “And for pride’s sake, if you DO lie, make it better than that!”

The poor kid wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cry. He stood swiftly and saluted as Merrick dismissed him, still chuckling to herself. As soon as he was out the door and it had closed behind him, he sprinted back to the cell block to see what had become of Maze.

----

“So just like that Kami?” Maze’s face was still set, the ashamed expression he wore having not moved since Kami had arrested him.

Kami nodded. “Guess it’s your lucky day my friend. Those kids you saved from the Sergeant had already contacted Merrick defending you by the time she heard about our arrival home. Aren’t you glad I took the scenic route back?” She grinned as the guard arrived and unlocked Maze’s restraints. He rubbed his wrists and stared at Kami.

“I still killed one of ours, and of that I will never be proud.”

Kami smiled grimly and patted Maze on the shoulder. “None of us ever are, I’m afraid. You’ll learn to live with it though.”
