It's mainly for storyline purposes. The benefits will basically protect you in case you get injured in battle so you'll have less medical costs. For now, just go with the free options as they will at least offer you some protection.

As for the other options like housing and food, that would mainly be for you to be able to put on your profile and/or write about.
