Welcome to the Navy Reno. My name is Tomas, and I am part of the training staff for the Vast Empire Naval Academy.

The first step will be to create the biography of your character. This is the physical description, emotional makeup (what tends to be going on in his head in certain situations), and a brief history of your character. You can find examples on the Wiki (link is below). Please post your completed copy in this thread when you're finished and I (or one of the other staff) will read it over and either give you the green light to move on to the next stage or give small suggestions as to changes you should consider that you might not have thought of. Glad to have you here.

I hope this is to your standards:

Reno Alakaz Bio

Age-18
Gender-male
Race-Iridonian

Physical

5'11 with a strong build. A tiny scar at the edge of his eye from when he stole a city guards blaster pistol and fired it off on himself. Dark brownish-red skin, and three spikes on his head. One at the top of his forehead, and two on the sides. He has

Personal

An anti-materialistic man with no sympathy while dealing with human conflict. His thoughts remain in his head and nobody ever knows what he is planning or what he has stored up his sleeve. "Deviance is the key to a successful reality", is his motto. It is not because he is not caring for the values of other people, he just believes that him and his family comes before anything else. Most of his personal possessions mean nothing to him. Reno sees a different world than most others do. He only notices the dark sides of people, the dangers of losing all that matters to you with a single fire of a blaster or stab in the back. Trust no one, and no one can trick you. He likes constantly learning new skills and trades, because if he didn't, he would probably go insane. His non-static personality makes him a very unique individual. Almost all people he meets, he changes their outlook in at least a small way.

History

He grew up never knowing his own father, and lived in a foster home like some unlucky cat that nobody wanted. They was constantly in trouble with the people on his home planet, Iridonia.

His mother died while giving birth to him, being smuggled in a slave ship, landing on Iridionia. A captain aboard the ship set him, wrapped in his mother's red robes, on the doorstep of a mechanic drunk named Zalann. He eventually left the child on the steps of his city's courts. A judge took him to an adoption agency in the lower end of town, which was sucked dry for credits at that time. Nobody chose him, nobody wanted to take him home and show him what it was like to have a family. Life was like hell for the next 17 years. He often lashed out at his school teachers and caretakers at the foster home, and found himself in a mess of trouble all the time. It was as if he didn't care about the poo steam-filled punishments the dealt to him. Nothing mattered to him besides growing up and doing something his parents would have been proud to see. He got into many fights, and at one point punched a city official and sat in a juvenile prison for three and a half months.

Now, as he takes his first steps into manhood, he finally feels free. All he can think about is making his way in the Vast Empire, and proving that his life isn't a rotten waste of nothing. Knowing that loyalty, hard work, and perseverance will guide him through the beginning, he is ready for anything, and hopes that anything is ready for him.

I found that very well-written/interesting to read; nicely done. For the second step of training, I  will point you to the "Pilot Procedures" section of the Academy. Your task is to locate read up on the flight maneuvers and describe two of them in a post here (in your own words). If you have any trouble, feel free to message me here via the Message Center located at the top of the ComNet.

I'd also suggest making your way to IRC. A tutorial can be found here:

http://www.vastempire.com/main/ref/irctutorial/

If you don't want to download mIRC, you can also use the java IRC. It's link is a couple under the ComNet on the main page. You'll find it's the most commonly used form of realtime communication within the Vast Empire.

Keep up the good work.

These are my manuevers, hope they match standards.

On Defensive
The Split S

It's a good escape route from gaining or overhead enemy pilots. Is also great if you are at low speed and are in pursuit of a firing rival. The Split S is not the best of all manuevers, but is useful when nothing else is formitable in a combat situation or when you just need to gain speed and low altitude.

It starts out by weaving out and curving in, leaving your enemy in a hard turn and flying way out into the distance. After the curve, spin and flip downwards at a high rate of speed. You will want to straighten out as fast as you can, seeing as how you will drop very fast and have a good chance of splatting like a bug on the planet's surface. If you are not within a close radius of ground, drop as far as you need to maintain safety, but you should not stray too far from combat. Do not use when engaged with a missle.

On Offensive:
The Lag Pursuit

Is a good way to stay behind an enemy when they are breaking for a turn and you are going too fast. As you come at them, you are gaining on them, meaning you are going faster than them. In order to maintain distance as they turn, angle yourself at the same degree of turning the do. This is hard because if you don't turn enough, you will end up further behind. If you turn to far, you could pass them and be shot at, or could end up flying into them. Hope you like thruster burns on your freshly waxed TIE fighter! But with just enough speed and the precise turn, you will end up right behind and over them with a perfect line of fire. Thus the glory of the Lag Pursuit.

Very impressive, Reno. The descriptions were spot on and I like how you made it interesting to read.

For the final part of training before you are put in a squadron (though Shazam, the training officer may place you earlier) is to make yourself a wiki page. The easiest way to create a new page is enter "Reno Alakaz" into the search on the left and press enter, then click the option to create a page with that name. A link to examples can be found in my first welcome message to you. You can use aspects you like from them by clicking "edit" and copying that given chunk of code.

In order to access the "edit" function pages and creating your page you will have to register a user name (most likely "Reno Alakaz") on the Wiki. It doesn't take long.

Once again, keep up the work. You're doing a great job and if you need any assistance pop on IRC or shoot me a message (as I am glad to see you found the Message Center alright).

Looks good for a first attempt, Reno. The one thing I would really suggest adding is the "character template" located on the top right of most character's Wiki pages. A number also have rank, position and medal charts in order to document their time in the VE. They aren't necessary, but implementing them now and keeping on top of them makes it much easier in the long run as opposed to digging through the ComNet for dates, etc.

Hey again, I was just looking around the Wiki and found this page that Than has made to help the new recruits make their page. It should give a general of idea of what is generally included and how to do it.

No kidding, Reno. That tutorial is really going to help out the Academy. I'm actually kicking myself for not coming up with it a while back when I was doing a bunch of Wiki stuff. THANK YOU THAN!

Also, Reno...as you make your Wiki look nice, I'll try and get ahold of Training Officer Shazam and get you placed in a squadron. Congratualtions on completing your training.
