Returning Home:

It was a trip he had avoided taking for years.  In fact, it had been well over fifteen years.  But now, he was going fuelled by a desire for renewal and some very direct orders.  The direct orders had come from the admiral himself.  Apparently, during their last meeting, Arturus had seemed particularly tired from the long hours he spent running every last bit of his ship.  He had always obsessed over the little details and was a tireless worker.  It was beginning to take its toll though.  In the last two weeks, his paperwork had not been quite as meticulous as usual and his staff complained to him about how his attitude and general pose, namely one of stress and fatigue had begun to wear on the men as well.  As a result, the admiral had ordered him to take his first leave in&he couldn't remember how long.  He had a number of options.  Various resorts on planets had looked tempting and ordinarily he would have gone to a nice hotel, spent a couple days at the casino or exploring the wilderness, studying history, and engaging in some leisurely activities.  This time, however, he had decided upon something that was likely only to his stress and fatigue.

Over fifteen years ago, he had left his home on the tiny, temperate planet of Vipsalia.  Left made it sound as if it was a voluntary decision.  At the time, he was twenty-one and still studying at the planetary Academy where he had begun at the age of 15, some three years before the normal age of enrollment.  Throughout the six years, he was very studious but his parents began to grow frustrated by the amount of time he had been spending there.  They had expected that after the normal three years, he would have moved on to a position in local governance.  Vipsalia was a tightly controlled monarchy with some imperial military support.  The military support helped ensure that there was never an insurrection against the monarchy and the aristocracy of which Arturus' family were members.  They had a significant estate and owned a number of export businesses as was standard of the rich and power on the planet.  The empire and Vipsalia had a profitable and mutually beneficial commercial and trading relationship.

After one particular evening in which his parents, in an irate state, had demanded, in rage rather than seriously, that he stop living off of their income, leave the Academy, and do something useful with his life, Arturus decided to leave to study elsewhere and learn about life outside of the closed aristocracy.  He had never returned since despite repeated messages, at least in the early years, from his parents to return.  After experiencing a number of things while studying and becoming a smuggler, he had decided to join the empire with the ambition of becoming a ship captain.  His studies had given an extensive knowledge and understanding of naval tactics which he was eager to apply should he ever be granted the chance.  He attended the Imperial Academy for less than a year before graduating as a pilot.  It was not the career path he had in mind but it was what was needed and it did involve him in the navy.  From there, the rest was history in terms of his career with the empire.

But now, after fifteen years, he was returning.  The decision was not entirely spontaneous.  For a while, he had been considering a return in order to reconcile with his parents and rebuild an element of his life that had been missing.  He also wanted to ensure that all was well financially; perhaps it was self-centred but he wanted to ensure the estate he was to inherit, land, businesses, and money, was intact and in sound financial help.  Finally, he had recently received a surprise letter from his mother, whom he had not heard from in years and was surprised she even know how and where to contact him, that his father was ailing and that he wanted to see Arturus again.  Lawrence S. Hargraves III had always been a rather stubborn man and a shrewd businessman.  He also had good political and street sense which had allowed him to make strong connections over the years which he wanted to pass down to his children.  Arturus being the only child, for better or worse, Lawrence wanted to ensure that his son was introduced to his network before he passed on.  Whether or not he was seriously ill did not seem to matter; the tone of his mother's note seemed insistent and when considered with the forced relaxation and desire for reconciliation, now seemed the time to finally embark on this journey.

"Captain, your ship has arrived and is docking now."  Petty officer second class Rosens said over the commlink.  Rosens had been his personal assistant since Arturus had taken command.  He was reliable and fairly meticulous which had impressed Arturus.  In fact, Rosens was one of the few enlisted personnel Arturus felt was destined for a commission one day.

"Very well, send Lieutenant Amason to my quarters."  Arturus replied.

"Aye Captain."

Due to the lack of hanger space on the ship and the sheer size of Arturus' personal yacht, he had it stored at a planetary landing commercial docking area.  It was not cheap but it was a necessity of the times.  His droid had piloted the ship to rendezvous with the Doashim.  Arturus quickly checked to ensure that all of his bags were together, all two of them plus suit carrier, and then ordered another droid to bring them to his ship.  A few moments later, there was a knock on the door.

"Enter."  Arturus commanded sternly as he was flipping through some last minute paper work.

"You wanted to see me Captain?"  Amason asked as he entered Arturus' quarters.

"Yes Lieutenant.  I am departing now for my forced leave as planned.  Obviously you will be in command of the ship but I wanted to make a couple of things clear.  I will be in touch via commlink and computer at all times so if there are any problems I want to be notified ASAP.  In addition, try to keep the ship out of any combat as much as possible so work can continue.  I wouldn't think that the admiral would order much for this ship while its captain is gone but emergencies do happen.  Again, if that is the case, contact me at once.  I also want a report every other day on the status of the ship, a complete log of all of its activities, and the final sectional reports sent to me as soon as they are completed."  Arturus rambled on, his head slightly raised with his hand scratching his hair as he tried to think of anything he missed.

"Captain, I thought the admiral had ordered you to be on full leave.  His instructions said you were not to be bothered."  Amason chimed in with the intent to be helpful while also stern in fulfillment of the orders given to the ship.

"Lieutenant, consider this a compromise.  I don't want this leave, but I am taking it on the condition that I know what is occurring on my ship.  I value this ship, the personnel, and this job quite a bit and I will not risk any of it being torn to pieces.  I also will not allow discipline to slide in my absence so constant contact will be a warning to all to stay in line.  Insubordination will not be acceptable at all."  Arturus said firmly and almost angrily.

"As you wish captain."  Amason said reluctantly giving into Arturus' demanding nature.

"Very well, dismissed." Arturus ordered.  As Amason was almost out the door he called "and enjoy your turn at command Lieutenant.  I know I loved every second when I took temporary command once.  Maintain order, keep it efficient, but be your own leader.  This is a test for a new career for you."  Arturus said with a smile.  He was stern but he was also kind, especially to those few whom he trusted to be almost friends.  Amason was one of them despite the fact that they were often two very different people in terms of approach.  Arturus was stricter, less charismatic with his men, though he could be very charismatic under other situations and ruthlessly efficient while Amason was more laid back and had a more amicable relationship with the crew and the officers.  Perhaps this was because of past experience or maybe just his overall character.  Either way, the contrasts complimented each other in a strange sort of way when it came to running the ship.

Arturus locked his quarters and made his way to the ship.  He was in his officer's uniform and would be acting as though he were on imperial business while on the planet.  Given that he was unsure of the reception he would receive from his family and the fact that he wanted to relax a bit from them as well during that time, he had made a reservation at a resort hotel.  Vipsalia had a number of them and Arturus knew from his time there that they were of good quality.  By travelling in uniform and acting on official business, he could get the best at a cheaper rate.  The Vipsalians were appreciative of the support the empire provided them militarily and economically and they showed it with preferential treatment.  It proved yet again that the establishment of mutually beneficial relationships was a far better approach compared to the alternative which was conquest.

Once onboard the shuttle, Arturus took his time checking the systems carefully.  The ship had been out of sight for a long time and it had not been flown in an equally long time.  He had ordered his droid to run a full system check on the ship to ensure that nothing had been tampered with and that no maintenance was required.  Nevertheless, he wanted to check everything for himself.  Droids could make mistakes, despite the fact that the vocal ones would take "offense" to that.  In addition, they, and systems could be tampered with.  The droid had remained onboard the ship in shutdown mode, to be activated by Arturus when he required his ship or something done to the ship.  As a result, the droid could have suffered reprogramming by someone with malicious intent.  Given the fact that Arturus had a slight sense of paranoia, which was a hallmark trait of his character, it only made sense that he would do all of the checks himself and manually wherever possible.
Having at last satisfied himself about the safety of his own ship, Arturus pressed the release and his yacht drifted away from the strike cruiser.  With that, he was off.  While it would have been cliché to say that there was no turning back now, for Arturus knew that he always could and protest the orders of the admiral by declaring unforeseen military necessity, and because he hated clichés in general, Arturus knew that now he had chosen his path for the next two weeks.  Long had he avoided this but no longer, it was time to finally return and make amends.

The hyperspace trip wasn't terrible long.  During the time, however, Arturus had time to unwind in the study area of the yacht while two droids busied themselves cleaning the ship.  The dust had piled up a bit and most of the ship just needed a good overall cleaning.  Arturus was particular about those kinds of details.  Eight hours later, after fixing a meal for himself, enjoying half a bottle of good wine and a fascinating book on tactics, the hyperspace warning sounded indicating that the ship would be in the zone in five minutes.  Arturus stood up, stretched, fully buttoned his officer's tunic, and made his way into the cockpit to prepare for arrival.  The five minutes flew past and within no time he was racing towards the planet of his childhood.

The descent through the atmosphere of Vipsalia went smoothly enough.  As he travelled, Arturus could see the sweeping forests below, interrupted methodically by the presence of the large homes to switch the estates were attached.  Things had changed.  The cities looked larger, the forests smaller, and the number of estates seemed to have grown, suggesting that some of the aristocracy had sold old part of their holdings.  Nevertheless, there was a quiet feeling to the planet.  Despite the apparent expansion, it did not appear to be the kind of bustling system Arturus was accustomed to.  This was not to suggest that it was a small, dreary, planet with nothing to offer.  The main traffic to and from the planet was commercial trading and vacationers.  Vipsalia had a number of good resorts and casinos that helped maintain the economy.  In a sense, Vipsalia was very cosmopolitan at the upper echelons of society.  There was still a strong class divide amongst the people although from what Arturus had read, that was beginning to change.  He felt that such a change was a good thing.  The problem with the current system was that too many inferior people inherited large sums of money and used it for absolutely nothing.  Given that the average person on Vipsalia was already earning a decent income, the strong economy had eliminated poverty decades earlier, it was not a stretch to try to break down class barriers and the overall effects were highly desireble.  In time, Arturus hoped that the planet would change to an aristocracy of merit rather than one of mere wealth.

As he came closer to the planet's surface, he could begin to pick out the private landing pads that many estate owners had.  His parents had such a landing pad, or at least did while he lived there.  He could have decided to land there and get the meeting over with as soon as possible.  However, given that this was also supposed to be recreation, admittedly forced recreation but recreation none the less, Arturus decided to spend the first couple of days enjoying the good life before heading into the country.

While Arturus called these places cities out of habit, Vipsalia only truly had one area that could resemble a city and that was the "city" of Visalius, the capital and centre of government.  Vipsalia had not undergone the transformation to groups of mega cities as many planets had.  Part of this was due to the small population and lack of immigration to the planet.  It was too expensive for many to lieve in Vipsalia and, admittedly, the local population had not been particularly friendly to newcomers in the past.  If they wanted to stay at a resort, spend and gamble their money, and generally have a good time, then the local population welcomed them with open arms.  Spending money made you welcome.  Coming to live here did not despite the inheritly flawed logic in that position.  People who come to live at Vipsalia would naturally be spending a substantial amount of income annually while contributing to economic activity and the tax base.  Nevertheless, there was a certain close-mindedness amongst the population but that too had apparently begun to change.  For Arturus, the sooner that changed, the better.  He didn't want to see the planet turned into megacities, but the ideologically problematic outlooks of the people had to and were changing.

Arturus was heading to the town of Lysanka, to the south of the capital.  In addition to being the closest major centre to his parent's home, it also was one of the best resort spots on the planet.  Situated next to elegant highlands, partially surrounded by water, elegant beaches, and well groomed landscapes and forests, the scenery and view from any hotel room was stunning.  The water surrounding it made the area feel like a little island in the middle of one of Vipsalia's largest lakes.  This lake, Lake Rosterata, covered nearly five percent of the planet and its waters were a perfect pure blue.  The government poured billions into lake and landscape maintainance annually because of its importance to the economy.  As a result, the lake was not particularly natural in its composition anymore and did not have the number and types of lifeforms that it should.  Arturus felt that the planet's government went a little over the top with its methods but now, it was too late.  Permanent damage had be done so now all that could be done was to admire the long-term reality which was a pristine blue lake in a beautiful part of the planet.

At last Arturus was on final course to the town of Lysanka.  Upon receiving landing clearance at the commercial landing bay, he guided his yacht down and it it in spots 251 and 252.  Like all commercial landing areas, this one had a number of spots closer together to accommodate larger ships.  Arturus' yacht, while not enormous, did take up more than one spot so he was assigned a double.  The down side was that it would cost double the prize but the discount he expected due to him being an imperial officer on business would help against that expense.  It wasn't likely it particularly mattered anyhow.  Arturus certainly had the money to cover any expense, but he did try to be thrifty where possible.  In his childhood, he had seen far too many of Vipsalia's rich and powerful blow large inheritances on trivial expenses.  After a while, those seemingly trivial expenses added up and there was no money left to pay the bills, let alone afford the cost of most goods on the planet which were higher in price than many other systems.

The ship touched down smoothly and hissed as the repulsorlifts disengaged.  Arturus left the system shut down to his droid and had his protocol and general assistance droid accompany him to the main terminal.  Having not been to the planet in years, he was unsure of how the security procedures worked.  He brought his bags over to one of the customs lines and waited to be cleared through, searched, and papers verified.  He was in line for only a few seconds before one of the security personnel at the terminal raced over and asked Arturus to accompany him to an express line used for prominent citizens of the planet, military officers, and VIPs.  Arturus was only the third person in line and within two minutes he was at the front.  He placed his bags down to be scanned and passed over his identification and firearms permit but the security officer immediately shook his head and told him that only his military identification was required.  A quick swipe of the card brought up Arturus' profile and he was whisked through security.  He looked at his watch.  Twelve seconds.  Wearing the uniform clearly was the right choice.  He glanced over at the standard civilian line and saw that only one person had gone through during the entire time he was in the express line.  Security was taken very seriously at Vipsalia due to the number of wealthy people who came to the planet.

The security was even more obvious as he was leaving the terminal.  The outside was well guarded with personnel and all taxis and limosines appeared to be stopped at the gate for a couple of minutes while they were being verified.  It was clear that the government did not want to risk the chance of a taki or limosine driver taking a new arrival from the terminal and bringing them immediately to some criminal element where they could be ransomed back.  Such an action would be deeply embarassing for the government and certainly would not be the best way to attract new, wealthy visitors to the planet.  Overhead, as he had seen earlier when he entered the atmosphere, fighters whizzed by on patrol.  Any ship that was deemed to be even the slightest bit suspicious was escorted to a secure area of the commercial landing zone where the ship would be met by security personnel and examined.

It wasn't a long wait for a taxi despite the delays at the gate.  There was an ample number of them in the area and Arturus was soon whisked away towards the resort town, some fifteen minutes away from the landing area.  Once they had left the secured confines of the commercial landing zone, one would never know that the government had a security presence.  The taxi raced through the hills of elegant, old forests.  It was the end of the hot season and the refreshing, but not too cold, breeze ruffled the leaves and pines ever so slightly giving a very calming effect to the rather mysterious looking forests.  Adventures had found a number of buildings in the forests and some had been excavated.  For the most part, the government frowned upon such excavations, even for historical purposes.  Part of this was the fact that the government did not want to damage the view and the forests which were so important for attracting people.  The other part was what appeared to be a bit of concern in the government about what might be found and how this might impact the political situation.  Anything that might stir controversy was to be avoided.  It was, in essence, government policy to avoid conflict of any kind.  As long as there was peace, tranquility, and the free flow of tourists and commerce, then the government was satisfied.

The fifteen minutes seemed to fly by.  During that time, Arturus was deep in thought as he looked out into the forests.  Just hidden from view along the road were security checkpoints so that personnel could respond if anyone tried to intercept people on their way to and from the landing zone.  This went for both people and trucks of good destined to the resort town.  The government was seemingly as concerned about the fact that a shipment of some exotic wine might be intercepted as it was about some wealthy person, or worse yet their child, being ransomed.  A study of government priorities on Vipsalia was fascinating if nothing else.
Suddenly ahead, they began to descend and within a minute, the forests and thinned and they were passing through an elegant stone gateway into the town.  Arturus had been here once before a long time ago and it was just as elegant, if not more so, than it was then.  The streets were absolutely immaculate he noticed as they passed the old, expensive shops and street stands.  The street vendors sold handcrafted jewellery, exotic imports, and other high class goods.  There was nothing low class in this town that was designed specifically to entertain some of the galaxy's wealthy and powerful.  In a way, Arturus was thankful that he was not currently attached to anyone.  Taking a wife or girlfriend here would be a definite pain on the wallet.  In fact, it would probably sending his credit cards screaming in agony from the pain of the heat caused by swiping them so many times here.  No matter, he was unattached and had no intention of spending lavishly at the fine shoppes in the town.  There was one thing he was looking for though; a new watch.  He believed, and was probably right, that he could find a very nice new watch here though admittedly for a very expensive price.  Alas, it was true when they say no things in life are free.

The taxi cruised slowly through the town as it wound its way along the river that flowed gracefully through the middle of the town with the road on either side and bridges, decorated with beautiful flowers, every fifty meters.  Each bridge was themed so that a person's river crossing experience was always unique.  Arturus blinked at the thought, he was sounding like a bloody travel agent for a moment.  Frightening.  Such a sentence was so ridiculous and over top, as most sales pitches are, that it offending his intelligence.  He put the thoughts out of his mind and relaxed in order to enjoy the final couple of minutes as they proceeded to the hotel.

The taxi arrived at the resort at the hotel at last.  The approach to it revealed that the building was enormous and standing right in front of it more than confirmed that.  Built entirely of light grey, brown, and red stone, the structure, built in a fashion that curved in the front around part of the long circular driveway, looked warm and welcoming while also making a statement about its quality.  With the kind of money required to build a structure such as this, it could be assumed that the quality inside had to be stellar.  Granted, many places used the superficiality of the hotel to draw people in and extract high prices from them only to fail to deliver to the level expectations demanded.  The maxim that one should never judge a book by its cover was one that everyone should always use and indeed Arturus was trying though the majesty of the building was certainly fighting that.

The atmosphere outside the hotel was pleasant.  It was unseasonably warm for the end of the warm season and people were making the most of it, strolling around the grounds and to and from the hotel as they went to and came back from the cafes, restaurants, and shops that lined the streets.  Given the heat, most of the women were in very nice, and very sexy, sun dresses.  Arturus felt very comfortable right where he was standing with his bags outside the door.  There was a busy cosmopolitan feel to the area which was exactly what he had hoped for.  After taking a breath of the fresh air, he had been stuck on a ship for a long time and the fresh warm air and light breeze felt absolutely revitalizing.  Recycled air became tiring and dreary very quickly.  Already he was beginning to appreciate being order to take a vacation.  It was exactly what he needed, though he would never admit that to anyone and didn't particularly like admitting it even to himself.
He took another breath and then walked into the hotel.  The smartly dressed bell-boy opened what appeared to be gold rimmed hydraulic glass doors as he approached.  Arturus had only been standing there for a matter of a couple of seconds but it felt as if a lifetime of stress had bled off.  Inside, the lobby was circular.  In the middle was a high domed sun roof covering a seating area that was built into a large garden complete with fountain and trees.  The open middle was surrounded by carved marble columns, each with a unique animal or symbol coming out of the top and looking over the people seated below.  He wondered what the symbolism of each of them was.  It was certainly one thing he could do to occupy part of the fortnight he was staying here.

Arturus proceeded to one of the employees seated at the long check-in desk.

"Good afternoon sir."  She said in a welcoming tone.  Mid-thirties, brown wavy hair, and brownish eyes.  She had poise and also some degree of beauty though the hotel uniform seemed to do an excellent job of trying to hide it.  The cut of the uniform also seemed to add fictional pounds to her despite the fact that the uniform was black and should have had, in theory, a slimming effect.  Nevertheless, she was bright and pleasant and to Arturus' pleasure, she even appeared to have a bit of intelligence.  That was far more attractive on her than her features or uniform.

"Good afternoon."  He replied with a smile.  Already he had shed much of the stern imperial officer that he showed to his subordinates and colleagues day after day.  "Lieutenant Hargraves."  He identified.  The woman quickly typed a few things into her terminal

"Ah yes Lieutenant, you are in luck, your suite is ready."  She said warmly.  "I see you pre-registered already so I will just need" Arturus handed over his military identification as she was speaking.
"Ah, thank you."  She said with a smile, not missing a step as she took the identification and swiped it through a card reader.  Arturus was at least partially right, she could think.  That was more than he could say about a number of people he ran into on a daily basis.  She handed the card back to him a moment later and then passed over two keys.  "There you are lieutenant, suite 762.  Again you are in luck that is on the rear side so you will have a view of the short cliff down to the beach and the lake beyond.  The Lake acts as an ocean complete with rather calming waves when there is a breeze, but it is still referred to out of tradition as a lake."  She said informatively.  Arturus nodded with interest despite the fact he already knew that.  Having completed giving that little sample of information, she pushed a button on the desk and a deep, pleasant tone sounded in the lobby.  A bell-boy arrived almost immediately, seemingly from out of nowhere.

This hotel, and indeed the entire planet of Vipsalia, was unusual in that most of work such as this was still done by humans rather than droids.  It was a nice touch.  Despite Arturus' dislike of a great number of people due to their inability to think, let alone have something resembling independent or original thought, he did appreciate being with people as opposed to walking chunks of metal and electronics.  "Suite 762."  She instructed to the bell-boy who seemed to be in his early twenties or late teens.  The bell-boy nodded, gathered Arturus' luggage and asked Arturus to follow him.

On the other side of the lobby were the elevators, twelve in all.  Inside, the elevators had styled, full length mirrors complete with frosted edges and etched borders on the back wall, gold railings, and mahogany sides.  The music was upbeat but not annoying as elevator music could be.  To Arturus great pleasure, the elevator did not speak to the occupants and inquire about their destination.  He could not stand elevators with that function and far too many commercial elevators had it.

The elevator ride was short and peaceful.  The bell-boy did not speak to him which also made Arturus happy.  He knew about the planet so didn't want a lesson in history or in where to go to shop, be entertained, and otherwise kill time, nor did he want to engage in standard elevator talk regarding what he did, where he served, where he was from, etc.  At the seventh floor, there was a deep, quiet tone, and the doors opened smoothly and quietly.  It was a short walk down the hall to 762.  Arturus opened the door with one of the keys and the bell-boy entered to place his luggage on the two racks laid out for it.  Arturus passed the man, or boy, a tip and closed the door.

The room was bright and elegant looking.  Arturus proceeded immediately to the balcony on the other side of the suite.  He slid open the heavy glass door and stepped foot upon the slate, topped with thin brick, balcony.  He walked to the edge and rested his hands on the styled, cast-iron railing.  The view was absolutely gorgeous.  The breeze was stronger here than it had been at the front of the hotel, which was to be expected.  Looking down, he could see that it was probably ten stories at least down to the beach which sat at the bottom of the small cliff that the rear of the hotel was built upon.  There was a path from the rear courtyard down to the beach that wound through the sand dunes and flowers that grew along the path and cliff.  He could see a number of guests sunbathing on the beach and others swimming in the absolutely pristine waters.  Further down the beach, out of sight of the hotel balconies, he knew there was a nudist beach.  A number of guests made their way down there as well.  Given the slightly, Arturus would say and annoyingly, conservative outlook of the locals, it was insisted that the beach be kept out of site.  Personally he didn't see the problem, but alas, people were far too sensitive about things that weren't all that important.

He took a deep breath and turned inside.  The room itself was very open by design.  There were in fact three rooms: the large bedroom, an even larger open space for meetings and general lounging, and the washroom.  The bedroom was very light in colour with a king-sized bed dressed in a white spread.  The bed was clearly made of mahogany or similar material and was complete with a canopy.  There were a couple of chairs and a small terminal station in the bedroom along with a night table that appeared to have a lamp made out of crystal.  Arturus had seen many like it before and had always wanted one though he had never had the opportunity to buy a quality one in a design he liked.

Arturus walked back through the French doors to the open lounge room where the entrance to the suite was.  There was a good sized fireplace in the centre with a marble mantle.  Seating for five if one put three on the chesterfield plus the two large armchairs that went with it, a television hung on the wall, and more of the crystal lamps.  Tucked in an alcove was a small kitchen unit and there was a table and chairs set made of dark wood on one side and a white bearskin rug on the other.  Arturus had a few ideas as to what the bearskin rug was for and what it was used for.  All he could say was that it had better have been sterilized after each guest.  He thought this instinctively despite the fact that he had no intention of ever touching it during his stay.

Having looked over the room and been impressed with what he saw, Arturus changed out of his imperial uniform into something more fitting for his surroundings and vacation in general.  He chose a light-tan suit and white shirt, open one button below the collar button.  Completed with sunglasses and his sidearm tucked nicely into his shoulder holster, he was ready to spend the evening in the town, perhaps even eat at one of the cafes, before returning to proceed to the casino.  Throughout his life, Arturus had become quite a skilled gambler and had won, and sometimes lost though that was rare, more than a few credits.  Lysanka had a large casino right beside the resort.  Clearly it was a prime location and Arturus was positive that on any given night, the profits the house made must be enormous.

Stepping outside the door and walking to the street, Arturus could feel the bustle increase with the late afternoon traffic.  People were on their way to cafes to eat a light meal before heading back to their hotels to prepare for the nightlife.  He decided to take a stroll first and re-familiarize himself with the town and life on Vipsalia.  There was also that watch he wanted to find during his time here and considering that it was still late afternoon, according to his current watch, the vendors should still be open for another couple of hours.

The cobblestone streets of the town were smooth, though not particularly comfortable on the feet if one was not used to them.  Being used to leather boots and metal floors nearly all day long every day, it felt weird to Arturus to be walking in civilian dress shoes on such a surface.  Nevertheless, it was a good feeling and it just added to his enjoyment of his surroundings.  As he strolled, the smells from the cafes struck his nostrils.  Steak, garlic, fresh coffee, good wine.  The smells blended together creating nothing short of paradise for his nose and a left out feeling in his stomach.  Maybe it was time to eat.

Decisions decisions.  It was decision time.  Everything spelled absolutely wonderful as he strolled along beside the river, scanning each of the cafes as he went.  All of the cafes had outdoor patio areas where most of the patrons were sitting on this warm day.  The heat wasn't affecting him as much as he thought it might have.  Ships had controlled temperature settings and it was always slightly colder than what one might call completely comfortable.  This was done, ironically, to try and keep people comfortable.  Imperial uniforms were warm and during battle, blood pressures and internal temperatures tended to increase so the cool, recycled air was supposed to counteract that and keep everyone comfortable.  He was perspiring just a little more than he would have liked though a dab of the forehead with a handkerchief quickly solved that problem.  It was a beautiful night and when he felt the breeze, it was nothing short of perfect.

Finally Arturus chose a place to eat.  He wasn't entirely sure if he chose it or if his stomach decided to protest so much that he didn't want to bother looking for another place.  Either way, the smell wafting from the café was extremely tempting and the atmosphere appeared quite comfortable.  He decided to peruse the menu briefly before entering to ensure that there was something that he wanted.  Price wise, it was about average for the town which meant expensive, but not to the degree that he would be bankrupt after eating a salad.  He could see that the inside was comprised of mostly wood with very nicely carved high-back chairs with red cushions and gold trim.  The patio area had the standard umbrellas, dark green in colour which went well with the dark brown wood and red cushions inside the restaurant.  The chairs appeared to be cast-iron with similar dark red cushions and the tables were also cast-iron with frosted, decorated glass on top.

The patrons were busy in conversation, sipping wine and eating well portioned, well presented food.  As one would expect, the chatter was not terribly loud and was certainly civilized.  Arturus couldn't stand loud voices and excessive noise.  He also couldn't stand frivolous, uncivilized discussion and debate.  A quiet, intelligent discussion about ideas, politics, history, and other such matters was more his style and this seemed to be a place where like-minded people met.  As he walked inside the entrance, he noticed that both the patio and restaurant appeared quite full.  It was local custom to seat people with others if a restaurant was full and both parties were willing to such an arrangement.  Given the clientele, it wasn't often that the people would be so completely different that they could not associate over a glass of wine and a nice meal.  This practice was particularly followed with people eating alone.  Vipsalia's culture was one that promoted friendship, meeting people, and general amicability.  It was an aspect of it Vipsalia that was actually fairly divisive.  Those who liked it, loved it; those who disliked it, hated it.  One rarely found something without an opinion on it and since the solution often was to arrive with a companion; it was never an issue the government thought problematic enough to become involved in for the sake of the tourist industry and the overall economy.

"Good evening sir."  The owner said, greeting Arturus.  In Lysanka, there weren't any chain restaurants.  All of them were small, unique operations and the owners always played a very active role in the restaurant, including associating directly with the customers.  He was probably in his late fifties, grey hair, a bit of a belly appearing which was common amongst restaurant owners, and a build that was beginning to show some wear.  He was very pleasant, well kept in overall appearance, and clearly very eager to welcome and treat his customers well.

"Good evening.  Table for one please and I would prefer the patio if there is room."  Arturus said.  The owner looked down at the terminal sitting at the podium and desk that served as the welcoming and reservation area.

"There might be room for you sir.  If you are unaware, we have a custom here that we will seat people with others if there isn't room, provided both parties agree.  This is particularly the case with single parties such as yourself sir."  The owner explained.  Arturus listened patiently, nodding his head.  The owner could see that he was indeed familiar with the custom.  "Very well sir, would that be acceptable to you then?"  He asked.

"Yes, that would be nice.  I just arrived and am travelling alone so some company at dinner would be a pleasant change."  Arturus said.  It almost came across in an unnatural or awkward way.  He had never been one to actively seek friendship or socialize in any way but he was feeling free and adventurous at the moment.  This was something he had not felt since the time when he left the planet.  What a coincidence, if it was one that the feeling would return when he did.  Maybe he should have done this years ago.
"Very well sir, please wait here for a moment while I go inquire at a table on the patio."  The owner said.  "I will only be a second."  Arturus nodded and the owner rushed away through the front of the restaurant and exited onto the patio.  He couldn't see over the flowers and shrubbery that lined much of the patio so he had no idea where he was about to be seated.  A minute later, the owner came back, slightly out of breath though one had to have a sharp eye to notice it.  "Sir one customer has graciously agreed to share her table, if you would follow me please."  She?  Now this was interesting indeed.  Arturus wondered if this "she" would be someone of his type.  There were really two types of people in the town, or so his memory told him.  Professional and business people who had either made a fortune in their life or inherited a fortune, and the rich dilettantes who had done thing with their lives other than enjoy the money their family had made in earlier generations.  Such people often tended to be mindless dolts who called mere emotional lists "thoughts" and refused to actually think, analyze, or demonstrate any form of creativity of originality.  It was fairly obvious which group of people Arturus preferred.
They passed through the same part of the front of the restaurant and exited onto the patio.

The patio was raised above the cobblestone street and the floor consisted of dark grey slate tiles.  Arturus' shoes made a slight noise as he walked precisely over them.  He wasn't doing anything to hide the fact that he had military roots and anyone who even briefly analyzed his walking style and posture would know that he was current or recently retired military.  Given that Arturus look young for his age, he was only thirty-six anyhow, retired probably wasn't the right guess.  Towards the far side of the patio, Arturus could see a table for three occupied by a single customer.  She was probably in her late twenties or early thirties, something that immediately sent alarm bells off in Arturus' head.  She was far too young to have had a career where she had earned her own money.  Now granted Lysanka was not exclusive to the very rich but the accessories which Arturus noticed next certainly confirmed his initial assessment.  She wore small diamond earrings, a long, double-looped necklace of small pearls with a gem in the middle on each loop, a very nice gold and platinum bracelet with small stones in some kind of pattern, and she was wearing what appeared to be expensive shoes, a tailor made sundress, and a watch with a face surrounded by tiny stones.  It almost seemed a bit over elaborate for the weather; almost, but not quite.  Arturus took a deep breath, fearing the worse in terms of his evening company, and continued to the follow the owner to the table.

"Madame, thank you again for sharing your table."  The owner said.

"Not at all, my pleasure."  She replied.  Her voice, thankfully, did not have the kind of annoying high pitch that Arturus so despised.  Her words came across warm and crisp.  Her annunciation was quite good and she certainly had a poise of sophistication and intelligence.  Perhaps he had misjudged her.

"And thank you for agreeing as well sir."  The owner continued as he slid a menu down at Arturus' place.  "Can I get you something to drink?"  He asked.

"A glass of red wine."  Arturus said.  "Good quality but not too sweet.  I'll let you chose what you think best."  He continued.
"Certainly sir, I have just the wine for you."  He said and then turned away quickly to fetch the order.

"Good evening."  Arturus said turning to the woman.  "Corran Hargraves."  He said in introduction.

"Sabrina Thomas."  She said, extending her hand.  Arturus shook it.

"A pleasure to meet you."  He replied before sitting down.  For the first time, he had very good look at her.  She had brown wavy hair, similar to the receptionist at the hotel.  Her brown eyes were bright and alive and her face was relatively unblemished.  Her hairs rested ever so gently over her almost bear shoulders.  The dress she was wearing had a white background but was covered in images of yellow and red flowers.  She was busty, though probably not artificially so.  From her eyes, she appeared a bit too intelligence to place too much importance on such superficiality.  All in all, if looks were everything, Arturus would have been happy.  As far as he was concerned though, until he saw a demonstration of intelligence, she was nice to look at but that was it.  In other words, she was little more than a well carved, sentient statue.

"Have you been here long?"  She inquired, starting the conversation.

"I just arrived early this afternoon.  I was planning to explore what some of the vendors were selling but the smells from the cafes was so tempting that I decided to stop for dinner first."  He replied.  Small talk was not his strong point but he was giving it his best try.  "What about yourself?"

"I just arrived today as well.  I am staying at a resort down at the end of town.  I feel so fortunate, my room is on the rear so there is an absolutely stunning view of the beach and water below."  She said.  The woman clearly had learned how to speak, Arturus was starting to warm up to her.

"Now that is a coincidence, I am staying there as well.  My room also has a rear view and I agree, the view from the balcony is lovely.  Having been onboard a ship for six months, such a view is a very welcome change."  Arturus replied.  He kicked himself for having let slip the ship comment, it was not his intention to get into his military career.

"You must be military then.  That would fit with your posture and the way you walk."  She replied.  He was impressed that she had observed so much.  Clearly this evening was going to be a pleasant one.  If this kept up, he might even ask for her company afterwards as he went to the casino and out for a stroll.

"Imperial navy."  He replied in a tone meant to be an attempt to dismiss the subject.  "What brings you to Vipsalia?"  He asked in a friendly way.

"Unfortunately business, but I was fortunate enough to be able to arrange to stay in Lysanka.  They people I work with agreed to meet here and since we aren't to meet for a couple of days, this gives me a chance just to relax.  It worked out for the best which is always rare in life I find.  What about yourself?"  She asked.  Just as he was about to reply, a waiter returned with a bottle of wine for Arturus to test.

Sabrina made pleasant company.  After the first few awkward pleasantries common when two complete strangers meet each other, not to mention when they were of different sexes, they seemed to hit it off quite well.  Arturus was trying very hard to engage in conversation that was not in the form of debate or analysis about politics, history, or other similar topics.  On the whole, they had managed to keep away from such topics and that in and of itself made Arturus feel like he had accomplished something that night.  Most importantly, he really enjoyed Sabrina's company.  Considering that she had a couple of free days before her meetings and he had some free time before he went to reconcile with his parents, there was potential for this to continue.  He had finally managed to find out about where she was from and what she did.  She was a galactic trade consultant working for a major shipping company.  Using a technique he had learned long ago but never had much chance to use, Arturus managed to continue to deflect the conversation to aspects about her and thus learned a great deal about the current state of the shipping industry and the effects of pirates and smuggling.  It seemed that with the imperials split and small rebellions occurring in a number of areas, piracy and smuggling were at their highest levels in years.  The so-called stability brought by the New Republic had not applied to this industry.  For a moment, Arturus was almost tempted to consider smuggling as an option in the future.  He quickly shook the thought from his mind.  He had been there, done that, and had no interest returning to it.  He was comfortable enough with his health and mildly comfortable, though still very ambitious, in his employment.

Two hours had passed.  It was beginning to cool a little as the temperatures became more seasonal as dusk arrived.  They had just finished desert.  Arturus had espresso and though tempted by one of the number of heavier tortes and chocolate dishes, had decided to go with a light, and absolutely delicious dish simply called summer delight.  It was a light cake mixed with lemon and lime curd with some whipped cream on top.  Sabrina had decided upon the same thing and both had remarked upon how good it was.  While the lemon and lime curd was quite tart, the sweetness of the whipped cream, it had been sweetened precisely for this purpose, countered it, making the degree of tartness just perfect.  Arturus pushed back his empty espresso.

"What are your plans for the evening Sabrina?"  He asked.  They had agreed to be on a first name basis quite earlier into the conversation which had pleased Arturus greatly.  Until that point, she had started to refer to him as captain in reference to his position, which had driven him crazy; he was sure, however, that he did not show it.  After a short while, once he had seen that she was someone with whom he would want to truly associate and converse with, he had moved to asking her to call him Corran.

"I have none actually.  I had thought about turning in early for the night given that today was a travelling day, but now that I am here, and have had such a good time so far, it seems like a waste simply to head back and lie in bed and read."  She commented.  "I do want to say, I have had a wonderful time this evening.  I am glad that this local custom exists and that I was fortunate enough to have such pleasant company."  She said with a smile.  Arturus had noticed that she had small dimples when she smiled, something that just added to her overall attractiveness.

"I've had a wonderful time as well."  Arturus said with a smile.  Now as the time he thought.  Now or never; it was time to see how far this would really go.  "I also had no plans for today for very similar reasons.  I think the air and the wonderful atmosphere is truly invigorating though."  He looked at his watch.  He had already looked at it subtlety when she wasn't looking but now he made a deliberate attempt as part of what he was planning to do.  "It is just early evening now.  I heard that they have excellent musical entertainment at the casino next to our hotel, I was wondering if you would like to join me there."  He asked.  His heart beat increased just slightly.  It wasn't to the degree that it was in battle but he was a little nervous and excited.  She paused for a moment.
"I would love to, it sounds wonderful."  She replied warmly and confidently.

"Fabulous."  Arturus said with a smile.  A moment later, the waiter arrived with the two leather folds holding the cheques.  He was just in the process of moving towards Sabrina when Arturus intervened.  "I will take them both."  He said extending his hand.  The waiter passed both of the folds to Arturus and continued about his work.
"You don't need to do that."  She exclaimed.

"I know.  But I would love to nonetheless."  He said firmly, not giving her a chance to put up a fight.  "If nothing else, consider it a welcome gift."  He suggested.  She had learned during dinner that he was a native of the planet so the reference wasn't lost on her.  Arturus slid a credit card into the fold and the waiter returned moments later, having paid attention from afar as any good waiter would do.  Customers often didn't like to wait long when the payment stage arrived.  As they waited for him to return, he noticed Sabrina shiver slightly.  Her dress wasn't exactly the warmest thing in the world and the temperature was cooling off rather quickly as was normal during this time of year once dusk and nightfall set in.

After everything was paid for and the credit card had been returned, the two stood to leave.  What Arturus hadn't noticed before was that there was a small step down to street level from the patio.  He wasn't sure if that was a temporary thing that was put in place in the evening, or whether or not it had been there all along.  It was rare for him not to notice these details and it bugged him for a few seconds.

"Thank you very much for that, it was very kind."  Sabrina said as the left the patio.

"My pleasure."  Arturus replied as the two begin to head the same way back to the hotel.  For a second, it seemed a bit awkward.  They weren't exactly dating, though they had in essence agreed to do so, and thus neither was entirely sure how to approach the walk back.  "Are you heading back to the hotel right away?"  He asked as they continued to drift in the same general direction, side by side, though with a slight distance between them.

"Yes I think so.  I want to get ready for the evening."  She replied thoughtfully.  "We never set a time."  She said.
"Twenty thirty- erm, eight thirty alright?"  He asked, briefly reverting to military time.  She laughed quietly at that.

"Better make it nine.  I have to do my hair after all."  She said with a bit of a chuckle.  "I'm sure you know what women are like."  Arturus did know and gave a quiet laugh himself.

"Yes, yes I do."  He said.  As they walked back, they drifted closer and closer together until their moving arms were almost touching.  At one point, their arms, which were swinging gently by their sides as the pace of the walk increased due to the cooling off and Sabrina really feeling the cold over her bear shoulders, and their hands met by accident.  Rather than pull away, she kept her hand there with Arturus initially apologizing and then taking it as a signal.  And so they walked back to the hotel, hand in hand.
Inside the lobby Arturus could see the stars through the large domed sunroof.  The trees in the garden in the middle were lit with soft lights, and the overall lobby lighting was just dim enough to be comfortable and elegant.  The turned left and made for the elevators.  Inside, Arturus pressed five for Sabrina and seven for himself.  He found out that she was staying in suite 588.  The elevator rose quickly and again, the deep, soft tone sounded when it arrived at the fifth floor.  The door slid open revealling a waiting area similar to that on the seventh floor with highbacked chairs, wall chandeliers, and a table with a mirror above it.

"Nine then?"  Arturus asked to confirm.

"Nine, in the lobby."  She replied.  With that, she turned and walked out of the elevator and down the hall towards her room.  Arturus took a little peak as he walked away before pressing the close button and proceeding to his room.  Inside, he had to think for a moment.  He had not been to the casino in years but had learned that it had been completely renovated and now was quite fancy.  While they were planning to attend a musical event, Arturus also wanted to play to gamble a little later if the opportunity afford itself.  Right now, it was far less of a priority compared to Sabrina.  He couldn't believe it, he was falling in love and he had only met her.  This was completely uncharacteristic.

After looking through his suitcases, he decided to consult the information pamphlet provided with the visitor information.  It emphasized the formality and elegance of the casino as well as the high class music and dining.  The picture happened to show the musical performance that was playing tonight.  Clearly it was a repeat tour.  It was a room full of tables where people could dine, have a drink, and even dance in the open space in front of the low stage.  From the looks of the picture, the men were wearing tuxedos thus providing a welcome reassurance that Arturus' planned outfit for the evening was appropriate.  He looked at his watch.  Just twenty hundred hours now.  He had an hour so he decided to take a quick run through the refresher stand before changing.

It was tempting to stay in a long time given the fact that travelling had made him a bit stiff.  He wanted to be early downstairs, however, to demonstrate that he was prompt and to ensure that he was waiting for her and not the otherway around.  He stepped out after just over ten minutes and quickly towelled off.  After putting on the pants and shirt, he had a decision to make.  Weapon, no weapon.  He thought about what the casino's policy might be.  It was quite likely that the casino would not permit firearms for obvious reasons.  In fact, most places wouldn't.  He also wondered about what Sabrina would think.  While he had unbuttoned his jacket during dinner, Arturus had become very good at ensuring that the jacket never opened up enough to reveal his shoulder holster.  This saved him from having to answer a number of awkward questions every time and it was particularly helpful in situations like this.  Granted, having identified himself as an officer and ship captain, Sabrina probably would have understood anyhow.

Firearm it was he decided after thinking a minute more.  His decision was a combination of his reluctance to leave it behind and the fact that he could probably get away with it by showing his identification complete with permit to carry while in civilian uniform.  If anyone was persistent, he could always lie and say that all ship captains were ordered to be armed due to a heightened state of alert.  That would handle most persistent guards.  Arturus strapped on the holster and then checked over his weapon.  He ensured that it was clean and functionning and he screwed up the silencer before slipping it into the holster.  He looked down at his watch.  Thirty minutes.  The excitement was starting to build.

Thirty minutes.  In really it meant fifteen given his desire to be earlier.  He had time for a quick shave before he left.  After that, Arturus tied his tie, slowly he had become reasonably proficient at tying a bowtie and he felt he did a respectable job tonight, slipped on his jacket and made his way out of the room for the elevator.  It arrived a moment later, sounding the deep tone that he had grown accustomed to.  If only all elevators were as peaceful as this one.  There was nothing more annoying in a hotel than being near an elevator that squeaked and made loud, annoying tones every time it arrived.  Well, there were other things more annoying but this one in particular could ruin a good sleep.  Being right beside a highway or spaceport so that the high pitched whirl of repulsors came in all night was a far worse situation but Arturus had found that to be a much rarer occurrence given how fussy he was in choosing a hotel.  Location mattered when he picked one.  Another few moments passed and the elevator opened on the ground floor.  He checked his bowtie in the elevator's mirrored back momentarily and then stepped out when the doors opened.

Sabrina wasn't in the lobby yet which made Arturus happy.  He didn't quite make his target of being fifteen minutes early but he was about ten minutes early which was fine.  If he thought that the lights had been dimmed slightly in the lobby before, they certainly had been now.  The wall chandeliers gave a soft orange glow as the ones overhead in the columned circle surrounding the domed sunlight.  As he made his way to a high backed chair from which he could see the elevator, Arturus looked up and saw nothing but stars above through the sky light.  He wondered for a moment how everything was onboard the Doashim.  Part of him had been troubled by the fact that in the over two hours he spent at dinner with Sabrina, he did not think about his ship nor did he pull out his commlink to check for messages.  He had left the commlink on silence but programmed it to vibrate if Amason contacted him from the Doashim.  If the ship became involved in battle there was hardly anything Arturus could do about the situation, he had to trust his executive officer.  However, with anything else, Arturus could be of assistance.  In fact, he forced himself to be even if he wasn't being entirely helpful since he sought to be involved in absolutely everything that happened on board.  Arturus pulled out his commlink and checked.  No messages.  Given his strict orders about contacting if him if absolutely anything was wrong, Arturus could conclude that no news was indeed good news.  He slipped the comment back into its slot on his belt.  Fortunately, it was very thin so one never noticed it even if the jacket was buttoned.  It wasn't that Arturus had any desire to hide it, but it would have irritated him if it altered the look of a suit on him.  Perhaps he was a bit too fussy about these things.

A few minutes seemed to take hours as the time passed.  Arturus sat comfortably in the chair as he waited.  He looked at his watch again.  It seemed it was if he was checking it every minute though he tried to do so in a way that did not make him look particularly impatient.  He was often impatient but he was working on trying to shed some of that demeanor when he wasn't on board the Doashim.  It was nine exactly.  Given previous experiences, he knew that if she wasn't right on time then it would probably be another fifteen minutes.  From the women he had been involved with in his life, they were either strictly on time or late because of fussing with their hair one last time or trying to cover one last blemish.  As he looked at his watch he thought about the style he wanted to buy to replace it.  He didn't exactly need a new watch; it was more of an impulsive desire.  Whether it was a forced impulsive desire or genuine he wasn't entirely sure.  Certainly he wanted to become a little more impulsive.  In fact, he just wanted to try and actually live outside of the cold, ruthless shell he had built around himself since he left Vipsalia.  Come to think of it, he had the shell even before he left but years away as a smuggler and in the military had completed and reinforced this persona.

The deep soft tone of the elevator sounded.  As the doors opened Arturus raised his eyes to look and saw Sabrina stepping out of the elevator.  Three others stepped out behind her and made their way to whether they were going.  She looked absolutely stunning.  As she walked into the lobby there appeared to be a brilliant aura around her.  Her evening gown was shimmery white.  It was clear from the style that she had planned for it being a bit warmer in the evenings than it was as her arms and shoulders were bare.  The gown had a high neck, like a turtleneck in height, and she had a wrap of the same material to cover her shoulders and arms.  It wasn't exactly cold out but it was cooler than in the summer and the humidity sometimes gave it a damp feel.  Arturus stood and walked up to her.

"You look wonderful."  He said to her warmly.  "Absolutely stunning in fact."  He continued.  The gown went well with her figure.  She was slender and seemed to be quite fit.  Her arms were a bit larger than one might expect but Arturus had noticed earlier that this was due to muscle indicating that she clearly was an active person.

"You look wonderful yourself.  All men generally look good in tuxedoes but you look great Corran.  Forgive me for saying it but you seem extremely comfortable in it which is unusual for military types.  At least that is my experience."  She said with a smile.  Arturus took her by the arm and they strolled through the hotel lobby and out onto the street.  Outside, it seemed warmer than it was an hour ago.  The sun was setting but the temperature seemed to have increased.  Part of this could be explained by the fact that the crisp breeze from earlier had completely died down allowing the warm and humid air to settle.  It also didn't feel to be as damp as it was earlier.

The casino was only a short walk across the circular hotel driveway as the main entrance was just at the end of it the driveway as cars were returning back to the main road.  It took them five minutes given that they weren't walking at a hurried pace.  Around them, others were going to and from the casino and the hotel dressed for the evening as well.  The nightlife in Lysanka was said to be excellent.  Arturus did not remember that aspect of it but he could see that the atmosphere at least was good.  The entrance to the casino was extravagant.  Enormous chandeliers hung from the ceiling, gold, mahogany, and marble where everywhere.  The marble columns in particular were quite beautiful.  As they made their way past the opening part of the lobby they arrived at the main entrance to the casino area.  The casino itself had three main areas.  There was A large dining room where the entertainment would be, a lounge room which could also be used for entertainment, and a very large gambling area which itself was divided between machine games and card tables.  The tables were in a separate room away from the noise and flashing lights of the machines.

"Good evening" said a man dressed in a tuxedo with a nametag indicating that he was part of the staff.

"Good evening."  Sabrina replied.

"Welcome to Casino d'Augereau.  If you would just pass through here first and then you will be all set for the evening."  The man said as he directed them to a small security booth just to the right of the entrance.  There, employees were checking people's coats and running everyone through a metal detector.  The casino would argue that it was for the safety and security of the patrons but Arturus suspected it was more to prevent people from smuggling in anything to cheat or steal with.  An expensive place with plenty of money is always a wonderful target to try and take some illicitly.

Arturus and Sabrina stepped over to the right.  There was only a short line and they were at the front in moments.  The staff was clearly careful to avoid making the process take any longer than necessary.  The last thing they wanted to do was spoil the mood of the patrons before they had even entered to spend one cent on a machine or food and beverages.  When asked if she would like to check her wrap, Sabrina declined and then she passed through the metal detector.  Aside from the beeping caused by her jewelry, there weren't any problems and the attendant handed her back her purse which had been scanned.  Arturus took out his military identification and flashed it to the man attending to the machine.  He then walked through assuming the identification was accepted only to have the man on the other side stop him.

"Just a second sir."  He said taking out the scanning wand.  Arturus unbuttoned his jacket, pushed the left flap to the side to show his weapon and then handed over his military identification for the man to look at.

"I am sorry sir but you cannot carry that inside."  The man said firmly.  Arturus was irritated by this.  He had clearance to carry a weapon everywhere except when the admiral gave strict instructions not to.  Arturus reached inside his jacket pocket and pulled out the other thing he always carried with him, his firearms permit.  He passed this over to the man.

"Listen, according to standing orders, all people in my position are to remain armed at all times.  My military identification should have been enough but that there."  Referring to the documentation "should be all you need.  Now then, I will be on my way."  He said impatiently with his hand out to take back the documents.

"Very well but I shall be reporting this to the manager so he knows."  The man said.  Arturus took the documents abruptly and walked away, buttoning his jacket as he did.

"Was that true about what you said?"  Sabrina asked Corran as they walked into the casino proper.

"Not entirely but they will never know the difference.  No one will confirm or deny the existence of the regulations I cited because they would be a matter of security."  He replied calmly.

"I see you've done this before."  She replied.  He was a bit confused.  He expected her to come across as slightly skeptical, maybe even disappointed that he had a slight streak of dishonesty in him.  On the contrary, she seemed quite contended if not comfortable with it.  That was a bit unusual to Arturus and he was not entirely sure what to make of it.  Nevertheless, it was good that she wasn't upset about that very minor incident.  Arturus picked up a brochure as they passed the gambling area.  There were brochures advertising a poker tournament sitting on a small, round mahogany table.  Arturus looked at it briefly and saw that it started this evening at eleven.  One hundred thousand credits was the entrance stake which meant that there would be a pot, if the tournament was full, of ten million credits.  Fifteen million if everyone used their optional re-buy.  Arturus was surprised at the number of brochures given that only ten people would be competing.  Then he saw that there was a large qualifying round first and that was what began tonight.  He put the pamphlet in his pocket and the door made their way towards the dining room.

The dining room of the casino clearly was a dual-purpose room.  On one hand, it was a place for evening meals and entertainment.  The wall chandeliers were on low and every table was lit by candlelight creating a soft, romantic atmosphere.  However, there were also grand chandeliers, even larger than the ones in the entrance way, above indicating that large functions during the day and even the evening could be held there.  It seemed a bit odd to have so many expensive fixtures but not to have any of them on.  Not that Arturus was complaining; the atmosphere was just perfect.  It was exactly what he had hoped for given that there appeared to be the possible beginnings of romance between him and Sabrina.  It was a pity that it would probably only last a brief while as both of them had business they eventually had to get to before travelling off to their respective areas of employment.

The two sat down at a smaller table at the front of the room, just bordering on the wooden dance floor and quite close to the stage located behind it.  For the moment they sat face to face but had set their chairs in such a way that it would be easier to turn slightly in order to see the stage as they talked.  A waiter came up shortly after they sat down.

"Good evening, madam, sir.  May I get you something to drink?"  He asked.  Arturus ordered a bottle of champagne and caviar.  The waiter quickly rushed away.

"You didn't have to order all of that."  Sabrina said when he had left.  Arturus wasn't entirely sure if she was being a bit coy to stress her appreciation or if she was expressing some kind of warning that she didn't want this going that far already.

"I felt like celebrating."  Arturus replied.  He meant it sincerely but he was also feeling her out just a little bit to get a better sense of her position on the entire matter.

"Celebrate what?"  She asked slightly surprised.  Arturus grinned.

"You'll see."  He replied.  He was being playful by teasing a bit.  The two sat comfortably and spoke as they waited for the champagne and the entertainment to begin.  The band was tuning up.  From the sound of it, they were in for a night of jazz tonight.  Arturus was delighted, he loved jazz.  "Already from the tuning it sounds like it will be a good show."  He commented to Sabrina.

"Yes they do sound good and they picked the right genre as well.  The dance floor looks quite tempting too."  She said in a suggesting way.  Arturus hadn't danced in ages and the prospect of it had made him nervous.  With things going so well, the last thing he wanted to do it spoil it but tripping over her foot.  He had noticed her shoes earlier and saw she was wearing high heels of a moderate height.  The base was also a decent size so dancing probably wouldn't be extremely difficult though Arturus never wanted to try the balancing act required to dance in such shoes.  The waiter returned with a tall champagne holder with a bottle wrapped in a towel waiting to be opened.  A moment later, he brought two champagne glasses and the caviar.  He looked to Arturus and Arturus nodded at him to proceed.  With a loud pop, the cork of the bottle was removed and the waiter skilfully prevented any of the liquor from spilling over the side.  He poured and left.  Arturus turned and raised his glass.

"Now I said this was to celebrate it and I meant it.  Here is to the person who has given me the most enjoyable evening I have had in a long long time and to someone who is truly wonderful to be with."  Arturus said.  Perhaps it was a little strong but one couldn't fault him for being insincere.  It came straight from the heart.  She paused for a moment and then smiled warmly.  She raised her glass, the two clinked very so softly, and then they drank.  It was good champagne, Arturus had chosen well.  His choice even surprised him as it had been a long time since he was off the ship and in a position to do this.  One advantage of a place such as this was that it imported alcohol from all over the galaxy so Arturus could resort to old standbys in terms of brands and types.

"Corran."  She said putting down her glass.  Arturus looked at her.  "Never mind."  She said, her mouth moving back into a smile.  Arturus felt like raising an eyebrow but didn't.  He wasn't sure.  His instincts said that she was curious about why he was doing this more than some kind of objection or move to slow it down.  Still, he did not entirely trust his instincts in these matters.  It was not as easy as commanding a ship, even when facing a cunning enemy.  Arturus would rather try to guess and out outmanoeuvre a clever enemy than navigate the complexities of human emotions, particularly love.  Nevertheless, it was worth a shot.  He didn't have much to lose if it didn't work out.  Suddenly the band sprang to life as the curtain on the stage rose.  Saved by the music.  Arturus took another sip of the champagne and the two of them turned slightly so that they could see the stage.  A woman appeared on stage dressed in an elegant blue evening gown and she was met with strong, but civilized applause from the now larger audience.  She was probably in her mid-40s though her features were youthful.  Not surprisingly in a place such as this, she was a bit on the heavy side.  Arturus attributed it to too many rich meals served after performances.  He never could understand the love people could have of the heavy, rich dishes on the menu.  His tastes were refined but he stuck to lighter choices on the menu.  Part of this was out of a desire to stay fit and part of it was because his stomach could not handle too much rich food.  Sticking to a fish and chicken entrée earlier in the evening was a smart choice in his books, especially given the fact that it was a warm day and he was a little bit tired from travelling.  A heavy meal would not have improved the situation.

There they sat.  Drinking champagne, eating caviar, and enjoying the music and each other's company as the spoke.  It was amazing how much there was to cover that wasn't covered over dinner.  Slowly but surely, she was coming out of her own shell as well.  Initially, she had been rather reluctant to say much about herself and what she did.  A galactic trade consultant was hardly a very specific business position.  It did say much without saying really anything at all which was perhaps why she had phrased it in that way.  Perhaps it was the alcohol, maybe the atmosphere, or maybe the fact that she felt she could trust him, but slowly she began to give details.  At the same time, she seemed a bit nervous about everything.  She said she was here to meet potential trading partners so that her company might get a contract to ship luxury goods, particularly high quality furniture, expensive wood products for homes, marble and other stones, precious metals and gems, and, as was not at all uncommon in wealth areas, spices.  Apparently there was quite a sizable contract to be had for this shipping if her company could get it.  This at least told Arturus that she worked for a company with sizable shipping assets.  That alone interested him.  Maybe, just maybe, if this worked out in the long-term, there might be some kind of position for him with the shipping fleet.  That was thinking so far in the future that it was almost absurd and certainly not something he would want to neither consider further nor plan for in anyway.  They had only met after all and he liked commanding warships.  He had spent far too long trying to get his position.  As she gave details though, it was clear she was nervous and, in particular, she seemed unsure of the meetings she was supposed to have.  Arturus thought back to her strange feeling of security knowing that he was armed and his security senses were alerted ever so slightly.  He would be more vigilant now.  But now it was time to turn to other things.

"Would you like to dance?"  Arturus asked.  He noticed the crowd was slightly thinner on the dance floor and he felt that a change in subject would probably be a good idea.  She did not appear nervous or upset but there was a slight tension that Arturus could detect.  He was good at reading these things in people.  Her eyes brightened and she gave her smile.  That smile had already been burned as in image in Arturus' mind.  Beautiful and controlled.  While she never said it, Arturus guessed she came from money and had received a high quality education, probably from private academies.

"I would love to."  She replied almost eagerly.  Now that was a bit of a change.  She had seem reserved, almost slightly taken back by the champagne and caviar and the signals he was sending earlier, but now she wanted to get up and be in his arms.  If his assessment was right regarding wealth in her background, certainly the items he had ordered should not have provoked anything like that.  It was funny; she was kind of like him in a way.  She was keeping her cards close to her chest.

The two stood up and Arturus took her by the hand and guided her through the short steps to the dance floor.  They made their way into the crowd.  Unsure of where they stood, Arturus took a slightly reserved approach to holding her only to have her draw him in so that they danced closely.  It felt as if they were dancing for hours.  The minutes passed slowly as the music played in the background, thought it was only a few meters away, and the sounds of the singer drifted through the room.  Arturus felt what stress was left in him bleed out as they danced.  This was the second best thing that admiral had ever done to him.  Arturus now found it rather amusing that the second best thing the admiral had ever done was order him to take a vacation.  The best thing still remained receiving command of his ship though if things worked out here that would quickly become a distant second place.

The music ended ten minutes later.  Break time for the singer and the band.  Everyone gave their applause and made their way back to their tables.  Arturus looked at his watch when they sat back down.  Ten thirty.  He had considered entering the tournament but was much more inclined to stay and spend the night with Sabrina.  Then she said something odd.

"Corran?"  She asked having looked at her watch.  Arturus hoped she had not seen him look at his.  He was good at giving his watch quick glances without people seeing it and this was one time where he wanted this skill to work well.

"Yes honey..err Sabrina."  He backtracked, slightly embarrassed.  That brought a giggle out of her.  Maybe she thought he was teasing or may she thought he was a cute amateur; he wasn't sure which.

"It's ten thirty; didn't you want to register for that tournament?"  She asked.  She meant it.  It came across as entirely sincere which seemed to indicate to him that she probably had not seen him check his watch.  Arturus was impressed on another level.  All he had done was pick up a pamphlet and look at it and yet she knew he was quite interested.  Either his emotions had become very easy to read or she had other skills she had not yet revealed.  Now this was an interesting dilemma.  Decision time.

Arturus thought for a moment.  How to handle this decision.  "Well the tournament did interest me but I must say that this here means more to me than a few hours of gambling.  In fact, the two aren't even comparable; they are on opposite sides of the galaxy figuratively speaking."  He replied to her comment about the tournament.

"Oh come now Corran, I know perfectly well that you were interested in playing.  I think that you should, it'd be fun."  Sabrina replied.  Why was she doing?  Who begs someone to enter a poker tournament while they are on a first date?  It was very strange he thought to himself.

"I must say" he began slowly, "that I am rather perplexed.  Forgive me for saying so.  It is just that this seems to be a rather bizarre situation."  He stated.  He really didn't know what to say at this point.  It was time to lay his cards on the tabling.  Now that was a fitting analogy given the situation.  She looked at him for a moment.  Clearly she was contemplating whether or not she should follow suit and lay it all out on the table or keep her cards close for a while still.  As she began speaking, it seems she chose the latter of the two options.

"You have given me so much tonight.  A wonderful meal, champagne, caviar, excellent entertainment, and the warmest and most pleasurable company I've had in years.  It has been a very special night for me and it was very gracious of you to do this.  Now I want to do this for you."  She said.  As Arturus thought of a reply, Sabrina took her small evening purse that matched her gown and opened it.  She pulled out a card and passed it to him along the side of the table facing the stage, away from the other patrons.  Now that was rather odd.  Arturus took it and kept it low, out of sight.  He gave it a brief glance as he made it disappear in his hands.  "There is the stake to get into the tournament.  One hundred thousand credits for the buy in, fifty thousand for the re buy if you need it, and twenty-five thousand for the house as the entrance fee.  One hundred seventy-five thousand in total as the tournament advertises."  She said.  Where did she have all this money?  He had guessed quite rightly that she had money but most people don't discreetly give someone over nearly two hundred thousand credits and tell them to potentially lose it all gambling.

"I&I don't understand."  He said, his face mystified.  Part of that was an act, he was beginning to put some pieces together and he did not like the picture that his mind was putting together based upon his observations of her and the evening.

"Please, I want to do something for you.  Clearly you enjoy these tournaments or else you would not have shown so much interest in a higher stakes game.  You also have the money and the desire which shows you have done this before and perhaps been successful enough to give it another try.  Corran, you've been wonderful to me; let me repay the favour."  She said.  Her face screamed her desperation for him to accept her explanation and not to ask any more questions.  He did have questions though.  In fact, he had many.  But now clearly did not seem to be the time.  His instincts took over on that one or else he would have pressed harder.

"I didn't do it as a favour, I did it first to be gracious and secondly because the more we spoke and were together, the more my feelings demanded that I do so.  You're a special person with whom it is wonderful to spend an evening.  Thus I did it for you with no strings attached.  However, clearly this is important to you and I accept with a reluctance fuelled by what I have just stated."  Her face showed nothing but relief and thanks.  He looked down at this watch; quarter to eleven.  He had less than fifteen minutes to register for the first phase of the tournament.  Tonight was the qualifying round.  Ten tables, ten players at each, table winners went on to the finals the next night.  There was one re buy option for the tournament which could be used either in the qualifying round or the finals where the chips were reset to one million with the fifty thousand buy in having an equivalence of half a million.  The final pot would contain the total of the rebuyins used in the tournament so in the end, the maximum pot was the advertised fifteen million.  The casino would take in four million from entry fees.  All in all, it was a very profitable tournament for the casino and for the person lucky enough, or skilled enough, to win it all.

Arturus summoned the waiter over.  The waiter brought an electronic payment device.  Arturus swiped a cash card and authorized the transfer, leaving the waiter a tip above the average expected.

"Thank you sir."  The waiter said as took the small machine back.  He bowed slightly and left.  Arturus and Sabrina stood and Sabrina took her purse and wrap.  It was a short walk out of the dining room to the main casino area.  At the entrance that separated the large room with the machines from the smaller tables room there were a number of casino staff beside a registration booth.  There was also a mobile coat check, two servant droids, and another metal detector with security staff.  Great&  This time he may have to surrender his weapon.  Arturus walked up to the desk.

"Good evening sir, madam."  The man standing behind the high desk, a large podium with terminal was probably a better description, said as the two approached.  "If you haven't registered yet you are just in time.  There are still a couple of table positions remaining."  He continued.  "Are you registered?"  He asked.

"I am not."  Arturus replied.

"Very well sir.  Are you registered or wish to register madam?"  The man asked turning to Sabrina.

"I am not registered; I am just here with my husband."  She replied.  What the hell was she up to?  Arturus tried not to react to the statement.  This was going too far.  He wanted answers now but knew he wouldn't get them if he tried.  It was not the right time.  Come to think of it, he wanted right out of this situation which was quickly moving out of his control.  It had gone from romance to manipulation and he did not enjoy being the pawn.  "I trust that I may observe from one of the tables at the bar inside."  She continued.  The man confirmed that this was in fact the case.

"Very well then sir, your name?"  He asked Arturus.  Real name or fake?  Arturus very briefly considered turning the tables back on Sabrina by throwing in a little twist of his own.  He decided against it though for a number of reasons including practical ones.  For now, he would go along as requested but after the evening was over, they needed to have a very serious chat.

"Corran Hargraves."  Arturus replied.  The man typed the name into the computer which presumably both registered Arturus and fed his name into the table position randomizer.

"Welcome Mr. Hargraves.  As you know, there is an entrance fee of twenty-five thousand credits plus the initial one hundred thousand credit buy in.  Throughout the course of the tournament, you have the option to re buy in for a price of fifty thousand.  In the qualifying round, this will buy you fifty thousand credits or half your entrance value.  In the final round, should you make it to that stage, it will buy you five hundred thousand credits or half the starting total of all players once the chip levels are reset."  The man explained to Arturus.  He then took out a small machine identical to the one the waiter had used.  "This sir is for the twenty-five thousand credit entry fee.  If you would be so kind as to make the payment now sir."  Arturus took the machine the man handed him and pulled out the card from his pocket.  It looked to be a standard cash card though with a scanning strip that seemed far more complex than the average card.  It also had a rather odd insignia on it unlike one he had ever seen before.  Perhaps it was the emblem of the company Sabrina worked for though Arturus believed that this was probably unlikely.  For all he knew at this point, she was not a galactic trade consultant.  Just before he swiped it he realized he did not know the authorization code.  Arturus reached back into the same pocket praying that the small optional chip that could be used for those who could not memorize their authorization code would be in his pocket.

"You placed it in your other pocket when we left the dining room honey."  Sabrina said as he reached in.  Arturus muttered that she was right and reached into his other pocket.  Sure enough, there was the chip that could be inserted.  How had she gotten it in there?  Then again, had it been her at all?  Then Arturus remembered; it was obvious.  She had slipped it into his pocket while they were dancing.  No wonder she wanted him close.  So much for thinking that it was all just pure romance.  Why couldn't anything be slightly simple for once?

"Thank you honey."  Arturus said as he pulled the chip out.  He slipped the chip into the slot built into the machine and then swiped the card.  It asked him to confirm the amount of twenty-five thousand.  Arturus confirmed and the authorized message popped up a second later along with the balance that always flashed once for the user before it was returned to the staff member.  It flashed only once so that only the user and not the staff member could see.  Arturus tried not to blink or react when he saw the balance.  The account had far more than one hundred seventy-five thousand credits in it.  The balance he saw showed over twenty-five million credits.  What the hell was she up to?  He was becoming more confused and suspicious and it was becoming difficult to keep his body from showing surprise at each new twist in the affair.

"Thank you sir."  The man said taking back the machine.  The authorization had also appeared on his terminal.  He quickly typed into a second machine and passed it to Arturus.  He recognized this one instantly as the standard stakes holding machine that were used at casino for these events.  Arturus repeated the process, this time authorizing the transfer of one hundred thousand, before handing the machine back.  "And thank you again."  The man replied as he took the machine back.  He was in his thirties, maybe even the same age as Arturus.  He had black hair, brown eyes, and a frame that wore his suit very well.  The name tag stated that his name was Andrew.  "You have been entered into the tournament.  Table draws will be beginning in five minutes after which time the game will begin.  The tournament director inside will provide further information about how the night will proceed.  All you must do now is pass through the security station.  Good luck sir."  Andrew instructed.

"Thank you."  Arturus said in a friendly tone.  He could at least act like he was about to have a good time.  He would need to.  The last thing he needed was distractions and yet his mind was completely distracted with the situation that he now found himself in.  One new question that had arisen was how had Sabrina acquired, or acquired access to, twenty-five million credits and what was the emblem on the card he had just used to pay the entrance fee and stakes.  More questions, no answers.  Not a very good streak so far.

It was time to pass through security again.  This time Arturus didn't think that he would be able to get his weapon in.  It was quite unlikely that they would allow it though he was sure that there was plenty of security for the tournament so it was unlikely that he would get away with shooting someone or even drawing his gun and living to use it either to shoot or intimidate.  It was time for the moment of truth.  Arturus approached the first of the security personnel and handed over his military identification and firearms permit.

"Ah yes Lieutenant, we received notice about you from the security at the main entrance.  We understand that you have your orders and that they are for very good security reasons but unfortunately I cannot allow you to proceed.  It is standard procedure for tournaments such as these that all players be unarmed.  Generally this is never stated because such an issue never arises, it is assumed.  Nevertheless I felt that I must state it given your course of action here."  The man said to Arturus.  Arturus nodded in understanding.  He had figured that this would be the case but it was worth a shot.  Again with the fitting analogies Arturus thought to himself.  He was becoming worried that he was being a bit too cliché and that he was adopting too many bad habits with regards to thoughts and communication.  Arturus tried to avoid low, common sayings as much as possible because they were a reflex response that reflected neither a unique personality nor independent thought.  Those capable of such thought, and Arturus was, were supposed to reflect that through their own unique manner of speaking.  At least that was what Arturus had always thought and wanted to practice as much as possible.

"Very well, I understand."  Arturus responded helpfully.  He unbuttoned the jacket of his tuxedo and smoothly undid the strap to his shoulder holster.  The holster pulled out easily and did not require Arturus to either take off his jacket or make excessive motions.  The last thing he really wanted to do was draw the attention of everyone to the fact that he was walking around armed.  Arturus passed the holstered weapon to the security agent who placed it in a lock box.  Every player and spectator was being assigned one where all confiscated and checked belongings could be secured until they were ready to leave.  The man passed Arturus an electronic key for the box and then waved him through the machine.  On the other side, the second security agent waved a wand over him discovering that his cufflinks had set the detector off.  They were the only piece of metal Arturus didn't remove when he passed through aside from his belt buckle.  The ring he wore, his watch, and a small pendant he wore around his neck were all taken off prior by him.  The pendant was a religious symbol he found while exploring a half buried temple on some planet he could no longer remember the name of.

"Enjoy the game sir."  The man said when he had finished the scan and was satisfied.

"Thank you, I will."  Arturus replied.  He was beginning to warm up to the idea of playing in the tournament even though the money was suspicious as were the circumstances that had led him to play.  In hindsight, he would have been playing anyhow if he had not met Sabrina.  One good thing was that it wasn't his own money that he was risking, but he did wonder where it was coming from and what would happen if he won.  Was it his money then or did it go to this mysterious, and rich, account?  He was getting ahead of himself.  First he had to win the qualifying round and he doubted that would be easy.  It had been a while since he had played so he had rust against him.  He also was beginning to have his doubts about his ability to read people after finding himself in this situation after thinking that he could trust Sabrina.  The conditions were certainly not at all in his favour.  Nevertheless, it was worth a try.

Arturus looked back.  Sabrina had finished clearly security and curiously enough, had decided to pull a cash card out of her purse and check it in a lock box.  Why would she do that?  Yet another question that would go unanswered for the next while.  It struck him as particularly odd given the fact that he had never known a woman to so willing give up her purse for so long.  Arturus sighed.  He had to put it out of his mind for now.  Focus and concentration was the key.  If he was to play the other people at the table he would need to be alert.

The table area of the casino was still quite a large room despite being the smaller of the two main gambling rooms.  The information pamphlet had indicated that there were smaller, private rooms that could be specially arranged for private tournaments&at a price.  Arturus assumed that this would be where the final round would be held.  The room he was entering seemed to have about twenty or twenty-five tables.  Along the side there was a long spectator area with people sitting around having drinks.  A long bar made of wood and marble, complete with gold trimmed rail, was busy serving drinks to both arriving players and spectators.  Arturus was impressed with one thing, they seemed to have human dealers rather than robots.  Places like this seemed to promote the human touch and Arturus appreciated that.  It did make Arturus wonder why there were two server droids sitting at the entrance.  He looked around the bar.  There were waiters everywhere serving the spectators.  There seemed to be little need for droids and it went against the character, image, and atmosphere of the place.  Everything seemed to be full of contradictions this evening.

Sabrina in arm, Arturus walked over to the bar to order them each drinks and wait for the tournament director to set up the qualifying round.  Despite the fact he had already had a couple of glasses of champagne and wine earlier, Arturus decided to keep with the liquor.  He had a high alcohol tolerance and knew when to stop in order to prevent drunkenness.  He frowned upon overindulgence of liquor.  It showed a lack of will and control and the results often were uncivilized or downright barbaric.  In addition, his mind and his ability to think clearly and rationally were very important and so he avoided allowing his mind to become too clouded by chemical substances; in fact, he hardly wanted it clouded at all.  Sabrina ordered red wine and Arturus a mixed drink with plenty of water and ice.  He wanted to relax without becoming too intoxicated and he hoped to fool some of his competitors by appearing to consume more than he was.  This would allow him to manipulate this perception to his advantage later.

The tournament director went to the centre of the room and called for everyone's attention.  He was in his mid-fifties with a mixture of grey and white hair.  He was a thin man and not very broad in the shoulders, something his tuxedo jacket seemed to exaggerate.  He wore glasses and was very careful and precise in straightening them before continuing.  Overall, his appearance was meticulous.  Part of that obviously was show for the players but Arturus had the sense that than man was simply meticulous and methodical overall.  Those would be part of a winning criterion for a position such as this.

While the director explained the rules, the blind schedule, and other aspects of the tournament, Arturus surveyed the room.  Most of the people standing he assumed to be competitors.  There was a fairly even split between men and women which surprised him.  Usually if the field was even a quarter female that was considered diverse.  In this case, the number was probably over forty percent.  That would make the tournament interesting.  Arturus sighed.  He knew that the director had to explain every last detail for those who had not participated in such a tournament before but the repetition irritated him a bit nonetheless.  Part of it was his heightened anxiety and part of it was excitement.  He enjoyed competition; in fact, he thrived upon it.  Finally the man was done much to the relief of the more experienced players.  On his command, small devices lowered from the ceiling to eye level above the tables.  It was shaped so that there was a small rectangle facing every player's position on the table.

"Very well ladies in gentlemen, it is time for the table draw.  Once the names are displayed on the monitor, you will have ten minutes to move to your table and check in with the dealer to receive your chips.  Once that time is over, the tournament will begin.  Good luck to all of you."  The director concluded.  Lights on each monitor area began flashing as the randomization began and a few seconds later, each monitor bore the name of one of the one hundred competitions.

"Good luck honey."  Sabrina said to him, giving him a kiss of the cheek.  Arturus was inclined to turn away but decided to play along for now.  There wasn't much else he could do.  If things were as suspicious as they appeared to him, particularly with the wife quip by Sabrina, then perhaps they were being observed.  If that was the case, it seemed to Arturus that it might be in his best interest, for some unknown reason, to play along.  It was a complete guess; he had no idea one way or another what it would mean but his gut told him to play along so he did.  Arturus took the kiss and returned one before taking out his handkerchief to pat his face in order to ensure that no lipstick was on his cheek.  "It's clear."  Sabrina said with the same laugh she had used before this had all started.  Clearly parts of her were genuine even if her motivations did not appear to be.

"Thank you."  Arturus replied with a smile.  She seemed encouraged with his willingness to play along.  Sabrina sat down at a table in the middle while Arturus began to circle the room looking for his table position.  It took him only a few seconds to find it.  He was in the middle, table five.  Unfortunately, his position was right across from the dealer which meant that he did not have a direct line of sight to any of his opponents.  That made it slightly more difficult but not at all impossible.  Besides, he thought, some of these people had to be amateurs with money to burn.

The tables were made of solid wood with a traditional green surface area.  It was an interesting contrast to the electronic randomizer sitting overhead.  The dealers were already seated in their positions and each of the players went over in turn to check in against the table draw and receive their chips.  Arturus took his, one hundred thousand in value, and place them down at his position.  He looked around.  Some of the players stood around doing nothing while others went around greeting the other players, introducing themselves, exchanging pleasantries, and wishing them luck.  One might be tempted to make the assumption that the ones who seemed to stand disinterested in thought were the experienced ones but Arturus knew that this was not so.  The most outgoing ones were often the most experienced and their ability to switching between friendly outgoing and serious player demonstrated their acting ability.  Poker, after all, was as much about acting as it was about the luck of the cards.  In fact, acting was far more important.

The ten players were all in place and seated a couple minutes before the beginning mark.  The dealer placed the cards in the shuffler and after a few beeps and noises; the cards were fed back out in a stack to the dealer.  The tournament director came back to the middle exactly ten minutes after he had spoken before.  The tournament was about to begin.

The tournament director said a few more words once the ten minutes had expired and then wished all of the players the best of luck.  With that, the tournament had begun.  As the director was speaking, Arturus had taken the opportunity to survey the other players at the table.  None of them were particularly striking in terms of physical appearance.  They looked to be fairly average people if average was a word one could use for people with enough money to enter the tournament and with enough money to have the willingness to potentially lose it frivolously on a game of cards.  This would make it all the more challenging which delighted Arturus.  Beneath the normal faces and actions must lay some excellent players.  They were just doing a good job at the acting part of poker.  Poker was, after all, as much an act as a game of cards.  Arturus thought for a second, he recalled saying that earlier that night.  Nevertheless, the point was still valid and always deserved being reinforced if for no other reason than to get him in the right frame of mind.

The dealer lifted the card that he had shuffled and proceeded with dealing one to every player to determine the dealer for the first hand.  Arturus was in luck, he received a king and it played as the highest card.  He would be the dealer.  The dealer placed the deck back into the shuffler and waited for a moment.  Once again, the machine beeped and whirled as the cards were completely shuffled.  The door opened a moment later and the dealer removed the deck, examining the sides carefully to ensure that none of the cards had become marked accidentally by the machine.  No machine was perfect but it seemed as though there were fewer marks created when a machine shuffled rather than a human being.  Then again, this was the purpose of having a machine.  It wasn't much use if it didn't do the job as effectively or preferably more effectively, than a human being.  While sceptical of droids and technology that completed replaced the human being with machines that spoke and moved like human beings, Arturus did appreciate the important role technology played.  This happened to be one of those roles though in the grand scheme of things it was hardly important.  The dealer wished the players luck and dealt the first hand.  Thus began the qualifying round.

Overall, the round went well for Arturus.  He began, as he normally did in a game, by playing rather conservative.  Part of his strategy was to create bidding patterns that reflected the strength of his hand.  By doing this, he hoped to get his opponents to assume that he was indeed predictable.  If he made a certain raise at a certain time, his opponents might be tempted to assume that it meant what it had meant the last five times he had done that.  This would be very useful for Arturus later on in the round as the number of the people at the table decreased.  If people bought into the patterns he could then begin to play around with the patterns and thus trap them, winning the game.  As the round went on, he would also become more aggressive.  By dictating the pace of the raises and the levels, he could quickly move himself into a controlling position.  This was where he was at his best in all aspects of life.  He liked to be I control.  In fact, he craved it.  It was one of the reasons why the situation he found himself in tonight bothered him as much as it did.  He was not in control; in fact, he was under the impression that he was not even remotely in control.  Something about that truly bothered him.  It was a problem at a whole other level above the fact that he was being manipulated for some unknown purpose.

On the round went.  It was clear an hour in that there were four experienced players at the table including Arturus.  The others may have been experienced but for one reason or another, the chips were soon concentrated in the hands of a select group of people.  Arturus estimated that he was the chip leader at this point.  He had just over thirty thousand or over thirty percent of the table's pot.  This placed him in a position where he could afford to be cautious in order to prevent losing the sum.  However, Arturus resisted the dangerous temptation.  While he could play cautious, his best chance was to play aggressive by using his lead as leverage to gain further control.  Sometimes it would result in losing chips but overall, he could really drive the game with what he currently had and began to switch more and more from his beginning conservative strategy to his much more aggressive strategy designed to complete the victory.

Victory did not come as quickly as Arturus had hoped.  He looked around at the other tables; it wasn't coming fast there either.  It was probably far too much to expect that the games would be anywhere near complete just two hours in which was the point they were nearing now.  Everyone started with high chip levels and people were being careful so that they didn't lose their sums of money.  Despite their willingness to risk it all, no one wanted to readily lose the money and certainly not at a rapid rate.  At Arturus' table, seven players still remained which seemed to be the average amongst all of the players.  Maybe a third of the field had been eliminated.  In fact, the more Arturus thought about it that seemed like a high number given the fact that the vast majority would have used their rebuyin in order to stay in the tournament.  It would put those who used it now at a distinct disadvantage in the final round, should they survive to make it, but nevertheless it was probably worth a shot.

One in the morning.  Two hours had passed since the tournament began and the director announced a half hour break.  Arturus stood along with the rest, stretched his legs a bit, and made his way over to the spectator area where Sabrina was still sitting.  She had been watching attentively the entire time.  Clearly she seemed to have a vested interest in the result of this.  He refused to believe that she simply wanted to see him do well for his own sake.  That would be an almost ridiculous twist given all of the oddities that had occurred this evening.

"You're doing well so far honey."  She said as Arturus arrived.  She stood to give him a hug and a kiss.  "Shall we take a walk?"  She asked.  Arturus nodded.  He wished they could drop the husband and wife roles that had been thrust upon them by Sabrina but he knew that such a wish was unlikely to come true anytime soon.  The two exited into the larger gambling room and then walked towards the lounge area.

"We need to talk."  Arturus said as they walked.  Sabrina cut him off before he could go on any further.

"We do and we will, but not now, not here."  She replied urgently.    "For now, just trust me."  Just trust her.  What a thing to say after she had ended up revealing that she had completely manipulated her all night long.  Now after breaking all of the trust created from the evening together, she wanted him to simply trust her as if all was fine.  Trust was not something that came easy to Arturus under any circumstances and while she had not made her way into his small circle of trust reserved for only a few he called his friends, she had quickly been approaching that point and Arturus was beginning to give her the benefit of the doubt.  Now he couldn't trust her at all and his paranoia was creeping in.  It was almost offensive to be told simply to trust her after all of that.

"Only because I have no choice."  Arturus mumbled to her as they reached the lounge.  "Why are we coming here?"  He asked her as they stood at the entrance.

"Just stand here and talk normally to me."  She replied, turning to him so that their sides were facing the people in the lounge.  It was clear to Arturus that she wanted someone in the lounge to see them.  Who?  Why?  What was this all about?  Arturus found it hard to play along and engage in small talk, something he struggled with under normal circumstances, while his mind was running wild trying to piece everything together.  He wanted to look into the lounge and scan everyone carefully hoping to spot a person of interest.  The person of interest would be the one who was showing interest in them.  It would be too obvious though, both to the person now, and to Sabrina, if he were to try it so he just resigned himself to being in the dark for the near future.  "Well done."  She said in the middle of their pointless small talk.  She turned to head back towards the table room with Arturus at her side taking her arm.

"What was all that about?"  He demanded as they walked back.

"I can't tell you now but I can assure you it was very important, a matter of life or death."  She said firmly.  Sabrina wasn't making this easier for her by saying such things while at the same time urging him to keep quiet and not ask questions.  All she was doing was create more questions which his very inquisitive mind wanted answers for.  "You can know, however, that I do not refer to your life in all of this."  She said.  This time her voiced expressed worry.  Arturus was slightly relieved by this turn of events.  A new option had popped up in his head.  Perhaps she was using him as a desperate move for protection.  That would explain her relief to learn that he carried a weapon and was willing to lie to keep it on him, but it would not explain her desire to have him play in the tournament.  Then it dawned on him.  It did make perfect sense if he was right that she was the one for whom this, whatever it was, was a matter of life or death.  By staking him in the tournament and pretending to be his wife, she could remain in public for an extended period of time and thus prevent being alone in a place such as her room.  Now the question was why she had anything to fear, assuming she did and from the sound of her voice, Arturus felt that his assumption was a good one.  The cycle of questions and lack of answers continued.

Arturus sat back down at the table.  Seven players remained.  Three had already been eliminated including after using their rebuyin.  None of them seemed to be particularly good players and that became obvious as the game played out.  The leaders had easily forced them to bleed chips without getting any reward for it.  For those unable to bluff or act, bleeding chips was often a reality because in a ten player game, the average hand normally was not spectacular.  Those who could win the pot through bluffing and forcing the rest out had to rely on the pure luck of having the best hand.  It seemed that all three were simply having bad luck nights because even when they had good hands and risked much on them, others had better hands when it seemed as though they were bluffing.  Alas, that was how the game went sometimes.  Arturus had experienced that frustration before when he was first learning, but slowly and surely, he had developed into a much more experienced and skilled player who could manipulate situations and bluff in order to succeed, even without much luck.  And so, the tournament continued.
