The items you buy are for show and can be used in story posts. Also, if you are ever chosen to join the Astral Guard, you can use your items there, too.
I know for a fact that Riel, sk8guy, Arturus, and I all have Rebellion. Several other people do, too, I'm sure.
Check out the Dark Jedi comnet for more information. Like it says, be a member for three months, be active, get a lot of recommendations, and hope the higher-ups like you enough to let you in. From what I can tell, several people have joined up lately.
