Hey all, I'm Zharyn, the new guy.  I've been in a gaming clan before, so I know how most of this stuff works.  Hope I can be an asset to the Navy as you all are.

Welcome to the Imperial Navy, but we aren't gaming neither are we a clan. we're a club of Star Wars fans that role play through story writing.

Howdy; welcome to the Imperial Navy.  I'm the Training Officer and you'll be under my tutelage for the next week or so so that you can get yourself ready for a squadron.

Now I see you've had some experience in 'clans' so I suppose you may be a little better suited for what your about to endure and have to get used to, but I think you'll also have a good time.  Keep in mind, this is not a clan, so we go by a very strict rules basis.

Since you're here, might as well get down to it, right?  As a member of the Vast Empire navy, your character is a pilot in the VEN by default.  As for who he or she is, how they act, their history, their reasons for coming to the VEN...  That's all up to you.  As I've just said, you'll be writing- this is a primarilly RPG club, so if you're comfortable with that and think you can enjoy that, please do proceed to the link below.  That link will take you to the first of about four steps in our training process to get you into a squadron.  The chapter is basically about character creation and requires you to use a little creativity as you'll probably have to do in your VEN career anyways.  Now, if you have any questions or problems you can go on ahead and post those here.

http://www.vastempire.com/wiki/index.php?title=Character_Developement

NOTE: I want you to understand that you absolutely must post your work here or I will probably not see it.  That means any questions, comments, problems, work, or really any information you need to put down.  All of your training is to be done through this thread, so keep a close eye on it.

Post your bio here when you're done, I'll critique it really quick and comment or question parts I'm curious about or interested in.  You can check out what you'll be up to in the rest of your training by going to the following link if you like.

http://www.vastempire.com/wiki/index.php?title=Flight_School_%28FS%29

If you'd like to cruise around the VEN Academy you may go to-

http://www.vastempire.com/wiki/index.php?title=Naval_Academy

That's about all I have for you now, but if you work pretty evenly and have a good time doing it, I think you'll have a good time here and get somethin out of it.  We'll get you into a squadron as soon as possible.  The best to you and your class!  Rock on.

Here's my revised revised bio... enjoy!

Name: Cailis Kaz
Callsign: Zharyn
Age: 19
Height: 5'8
Weight: 146 lbs
Hair Color: Blonde
Eye Color: Blue
Place of Birth: Corulag
Physical Features: Small scar on left forearm from a vibroblade fight at the Academy and a small birthmark on left side of neck that looks like a seven-sided star

Personality: Cailis is shy and reserved, cool and calculating. He likes to be in control of the situation and covers every contingency to make sure it doesn't get away from him. He thinks things through thoroughly before making a decision.  This does not hinder his ability to act on impulse or out of reflex, however.  He chooses his friends very carefully, and these people are the ones he fully trusts.  If one is worthy enough to be trusted by him however, they will find him to be a valuable ally.  His trademark is a stare that seems to pierce into the very core of its recipient and examine what is there.  Many have gotten this look from him, and few have forgotten it easily or shrugged it off.

History: "I was born during the rise of Emperor Palpatine, just before the Clone Wars ended.  I am the only son of a Republic Intelligence officer, Sarn, and his wife, Thelissa.  When the Republic became the Empire, my father stayed with the new Imperial Intelligence and claimed he was not a loyalist.  However, the Empire seemed to keep an eye on him; then again, they were watching all of us.  When the Rebellion arose, we moved to Imperial Center to avoid the uprising on Corulag, but we had to leave my mother behind.  I do not know what became of her.  My father continued to serve unwaveringly, and assisted greatly in the capture of many Rebels and other criminals.  Sadly, he was killed in the line of duty just before the debacle at Endor.  He died an honorable death, and his dying wish was that I continue the fight and enlist at the Academy.  So I'm here now, after years of studying and learning, continuing his legacy and honoring him through my service to the Empire."

M'kay, I like that I suppose, but we do need to work on a few things.  For instance, you just joined because your father wanted you to?  Is that still a conflict and are you hesitant about your decision to join a group that makes its work out of death?  Or are you totally blinded by the fact your father asked it of you?

And how does your character act?  A lot of that might be decided on how you answered the above questions- are they happy, sad, over excited, depressed on account of their own behavior?  Unreasonable?  Perfectly easy to get along with?  This would go under a little section we'd call 'emotional behavior'.  If we know these things then your colleagues will be able to write about you much more efficiently and certainly more effectively when trying to involve you in their post- especially your wingman.

Btw, you can decide what your character is in his class, but not you.  You will be whatever you are at the end of the week when you graduate- your character is a different story as I've just said.

One more thing- you need to stay in the first or third person, if you mix between the two it'll disrupt your writing and force the people reading to lose their train of thought and try to pick up somewhere else- you don't want to do that.

If you have any questions or problems, comments or concerns- give me a ring or push the button.  Thanks.

We're talkin about the one above right?  You didn't really fix any of the things I spoke about, lol- I suppose you added the emotional description which is good, but I'm still relativelly unsatisfied.  We still know nothing about your character- why is it that he's cool and calculating?  I don't mean to be so harsh about the whole thing, but I find it will be overall extremely beneficial to you and your squadron mates- this should take very, very little time to fix, so-

Lets move onto the next step so we don't lose any time or sleep over this:

You need to proceed to 'Pilot Procedure' on the index page of the site below.  Read through the description then click the 'Pilot Procedure' link.  There you have to look at both tactical and equipment sides of the VEN and you will have a very short assignement.  I want you to post that assignment in here as always and if you have any questions or problems- just say so; I'm here to help and get you through this so you can go on your way to having a good time.

Okay, bio has been revised.

As for my assignment, and after reading all the details of the assignment, i will discuss not two, but three maneuvers.

The Barrel Roll- The barrel roll is when the craft spins on a central axis (such as its nose axis.) It is used offensively to bleed off excess speed if you are coming up on your target too fast. It also can be used defensively to make your pursuer overshoot and pass you (which also makes you the pursuer.) This requires perfect timing if used defensively, because is started too soon, the pursuer will follow you through it. If started too late, the pursuer will have several shot opportunities before you lose him.

The Break Turn- The brake turn is a basic turn with offensive and defensive uses. It involves simply banking and vectoring away to avoid enemy fire or make a harder turn. It can be used offensively to acquire a target or make a hard turn to get on someone's tail. Its defensive uses include turning to avoid enemy fire or lose your pursuer.

The Immelman- The Immelman is neither offensive or defensive- instead, it is a move that lets you change vector and gain altitude. It uses a lot of thrust in an near- vertical climb which includes a half-roll. At the end of the climb, the craft must level out in one of three different directions - left, right, or to the rear (port, starboard, or aft.) This gives you altitude on your enemies (a must in atmospheric combat.) This manuever is better suited to lower-thrust craft.

Your extra manuever is noted and will compiled along with the rest of your gradings from this course to determine your rank- well done.  I agree with all of your comments although I suppose the Immelman could be used as a defensive as well as offensive practice to gain a target or to lose a pursuer- it'd have to be hard and fast though.

Your next assignment and last is Chapter III of that page entitled 'The Squadron.'  Read through it and click on the link 'The Post.'  There you will make two seperate post that you must put in here so I can view.  After you've done that, go back to chapter III and read 'the Squadron' link.  That's just basic protocol for you to follow you once you're in a squadron.  After you're done with chapter, all that's left is the Aviator's Exam and you are set.  Keep rockin.

Okay, here's the first post....

"Desus One, two lit and ready to go."

Zharyn sat in the dark cockpit of his Interceptor, running through his preflight list for the fourth time.  He had the heat on full blast, but he was very cold for some reason.
"Desus Two, in the green."

His Trainer for this flight was Captain Denar.  Zharyn was apathetic about this, having never met the man.  He was already formulating an opinion of him, however.  Smart, aggressive almost to the point of recklessness, yet calm and understanding was what he had so far.
"Desus Three, ready."

His two other flight members, Gunnay and Vash, were also recruits fresh out of Basic. They seemed to be competent in all areas.  They were probably nervous, scared even.  He hated when others were afraid.  Zharyn never got scared, just& tense.  As he was now, waiting in the frigid cockpit.
"Desus Four, all set."

The Captain was flying lead, Gunnay was Two, Vash Three, and Zharyn was Four.  They had all been paired together for this flight, and as per orders, they had gotten to known each other a little better.  Zharyn had found the two recruits to be likable, but he had his reservations about them, like he did about almost everyone.
Leader spoke his orders.

"Engage repulsorlifts.  Move out of the hangar and vector outbound from the ship."

A chorus of "Roger that" came over the comm.

Ever so gingerly, Zharyn eased in the repulsors and floated over to the magcon shield.  He passed through it& and was suddenly in space.  Of course he had traveled before, but he had never really felt so& alone.  Not even when his father died.
He shook those thoughts out of his head and concentrated on his flying.

"Engage engines, half-throttle.  Finger-four formation. Let's take it nice and easy now; I don't want any accidents on my watch.  Head towards the dummy targets.  You can slowly throttle up when you feel up to it."

Almost as soon as the words were out of the Captain's mouth, Zharyn kicked the engines up to almost full power.  He was pushed back into his seat for the moment in which the inertial compensator was straining to handle the sudden pressure.  He checked his sensors and saw that all of the others had also done the same thing.

"Very good, you all handle your ships well.  So as a little reward, you get to go through some maneuvers with me.  Follow my lead and stay tight, but we don't want anybody getting too close.  Understand?"

"Affirmative" came the three replies.

Leader put his fighter into a gentle bank turn to port.  The trainees followed suit with reasonable skill.  Next, One pulled a tight Immelman upward and rolled back to starboard.  Zharyn, silently willing himself to do the same, put his fighter into a vertical climb.  He leveled off and came out right where he should be, on Vash's wing.  Gunnay was a little better, but Zharyn quickly tightened up formation.

"Nice, you all are decent pilots for people who haven't even flown a real Interceptor before.  Let's shoot some targets now.  Follow me and cut throttle when I say, then reverse-thrust to a stop."

"Copy that" was the unanimous reply.

Target practice was uneventful, but interesting.  Each pilot was given ten targets.  Gunnay went first, scoring seven out of ten.  Vash hit eight of his, and Zharyn also scored eight.  Those last two targets were moving very fast, but they proved to be no problem to Leader, who easily hit all ten.

"Good job.  Let's do a little dogfighting practice.  Vash, you're with me; Gunnay is with Zharyn.  Vash tries to shoot me; Gunnay tries the same with Zharyn.  Use targeting lasers only; they're visible but won't do any damage. Feel free to do any moves you want, but don't endanger anyone else. You copy?"

Once again the three pilots blurted out the same word at the same instant.

Zharyn kicked the drive to full power and dove, Gunnay jockeying for a lock.  The howl of a laser paint warning filled the cockpit, and Zharyn banked hard to the left.  The laser went wide to the right, while Zharyn kept banking until he was the one chasing Gunnay.  Gunnay tried to maneuver out of the way, but Zharyn filled the space around the Interceptor with targeting lasers, and he scored a few definite hits.

"All right, pilots.  Nice job, get some more sim time in for dogfights, but overall, very good.  Let's head back to the ship, half-throttle.  Form up again."

"Yes, sir."

Zharyn sighed out of relief and throttled down.  He hadn't done too badly for his first dogfight, even if it was only a fake one.  He just hoped he didn't do poorly next time&

Ah, very good.  Alls I have to say for that is make sure you watch your grammer and a very easy way to cure that is just reading through it thorougly.

Now, this is acceptable for now, but this next post I want you to focus on your character a little more.  You basically did the 'I did this and that' which is okay, but if you can do more, that's cool too, lol.  What I mean is, you could pull in flash backs from what this reminds you of or how your character is feeling about it.  I don't mean make him an emotional mess, but make him a little more interesting by adding some real imput.  When people read your stuff they should be able to say "Goltred wrote this."  The idea is to bring yourself into the picture a lot more and make people interested in your character.

Lemme know if you have any questions comments or concerns; can't wait for your next post.  Rock On.

(Btw, if you wanted to include those guys in your post, you may want to read their bios.  You can see them by going to their post in here or otherwise.)

That's fine- I just noticed that I didn't let you know about formatting post.  Most of the time, you don't need indentions and all you need for spacing in between paragraphs is a simple return.

Like so.  This'll make it easier to read but less jumbled.  Keep rockin.

Well, here's part two (finally)

***********

"Who in the Sith does this guy think he is?"

Zharyn was sitting in his cockpit, with that question running through his helmeted head.  He and the rest of his flight were waiting for clearance to go.  As he listened to the exchange between the IVE rep and Control, Zharyn tried to compose himself.  Partially successful, he returned his attention to a last-minute check and the conversation.

"Wow," Gunnay said, "They must teach all the officers how to spit ice over the comlink.  I mean, Lieutenant Commander Shazam made me feel like I was floating in space without my Flight Suit after I pulled that stunt with that blow-up doll tied to the back of his fighter."

Zharyn chuckled to himself over that remark.  He remembered that particular prank all too well. But even a little laughter failed to cut through that chill in his gut.  It felt like a freezer unit had been implanted in him and turned on high.  More on the bright side, it seemed to be a little better than the first time.

"First Flight, CTC Orran will be joining us for this flight.  His designation will be five.  He is merely to stay back and observe and none of us will interfere with him taking his readings on our fighters.  Understood?"

A simultaneous response (as usual) ensued, and the flight was underway.  As he made his way away from the hangar, Zharyn could feel the ice inside him starting to melt, albeit slowly.  Zharyn was left wondering when Leader told the group about his little surprise.  This seemed strange coming from a man like him.

Still pondering what it might be, Zharyn turned his attention to the daunting task of atmospheric flying.  Many new difficulties presented themselves in atmospheric flying, in addition to the ones of normal space flying.  Gravity, drag, weather, you name it, this place had it.  After listening to a small review about atmospheric maneuvers, and going through them (with Gunnay almost ramming Leader,) the flight of Interceptors paired up into their wingmates and once again started to dogfight.

As he slowly settled in behind Vash, Zharyn closely monitored his scopes, making sure nobody else approached from behind.  A minute later it was time to trade off.  Zharyn had painted Vash without too much trouble, but now he had to fly against the Captain himself.  The freezer was back on high.

Leader let Zharyn get into kill position and even let him shoot at him a few times before breaking up and to port, seemingly disappeared.  Zharyn checked his sensors, but there was only Vash, Gunnay, and the IVE bigwig.  As he roared past another of this world's strange blue clouds, his sensors screamed at him and stopped.  He'd been sniped from within that cloud.

The Captain's warm voice came over the private comm.  "Nice try, son.  Just remember to not rely on your sensors as much in this sort of environment.  The clouds can block or scramble the signal, so they can be pretty useless.  Overall though, you did well enough."

With a sigh, Zharyn throttled up to go meet Gunnay.  As it turned out, he had improved from last time.  A lot.  Within a few moments, Zharyn had been evaded, then painted.  With a small sigh, he came about and formed up, both anxious about the so-called surprise, and angry over his failures in the dogfights.  Most of the time though, he kept a lid on such thoughts, and never allowed his emotions to spill out at an inappropriate time, such as now.

The surprise turned out to be a sort of target practice with live targets.  As they dove deeper into the atmosphere, Zharyn started to see greenish bird-dragon things flying around.

Leader's voice resonated over the radio.  "We're going hunting, level off at 500 meters.  Whoever kills the least birds is buying drinks tonight.  They're 10 meters long, dark green, and have a nasty tail that could knock you out of the sky.  Good luck."

As soon as Leader had gotten the "good luck" out, Zharyn shot at one of the bird-lizards.  Stupidly, he realized that his lasers were still set on targeting mode.  Switching them back to full power, he shot again; green bolts lanced out, and he was rewarded with seeing the thing fall out of the sky.

As he watched the lasers down his foe, he couldnt help but remember where he had last seen real green lasers.  His father had been slain by a green laser.  He could see it as though it was still happening; the green light filling the small bar; the smell of alcohol heavy in the air; the sweet and heavy scent of blood.  His father's blood.  As he held him in his arms, his father had begged him to come here.  And now he was here.  That rattling sound as he strained to hear his plea...

Distractedly, he shook that recurring image out of his mind and tried to focus on what was happening now.  Gunnay and Vash also had gotten a kill, but Zharyn made another as he twisted his ship around to neatly clip another on the wing.  Unable to stay aloft, the bird-thing plummeted.

"What now?" Zharyn asked himself as that bumbling businessman screamed into the comm.  To his horror, the IVE rep began firing at an unseen target.

"NO! Cease fire, five, cease fire!"  The Captain sounded worried, almost hysterical.

Zharyn wasn't even sure there was anything there.  But as if to answer his question, out of nowhere, a spiked tail crashed into the man's fighter, crushing the port-side wing and damaging the ball-cockpit.  Leader tried desperately to raise him on the radio, but static was the only response.  The stricken Interceptor plowed into the ground and blew up in an inferno.

A stream of rich curses ensued, as the Captain spit one out after another.  At any other time, Zharyn might have laughed at some of them, but now was not the time.  As they came to a stop, Leader came back over the radio.

"Back to base boys.  Looks like we're going to all be debriefed today."

**********

As he powered down, Zharyn watched as an angry Gunnay jumped out of his Interceptor and strode over to the Captain.

Heh- we'll see how large your graduating class is.

Anyways- that was very good.  You played off the post well, but I think you could have done a little more yet- by that I mean leading into your character's history a little with maybe a flashback or a deeper reaction rather that- "That kind of sucked..."  Lol- do you see what I mean or does it look like I'm just talkin?  I'd like you to edit up that post before we move you on to the Aviator's exam- lemme know when you're ready.  Rock On.

That's better- lets get you done, then.  Go on to the end of Flight School and take the "Aviator's Test."  How well you do on this test directly affects your rank and future position in the Navy, so be thorough.  Make sure to send it to either [email protected] or [email protected]  Contact me and tell me which one you sent it to via message center and I'll get to checking it.  You've done well- finish out strong.  Rock on
