  Objective: Rescue on Kessel
June 15, 2005 2:03:16 PM    View the profile of Jack Nebulax
Senior Cheif Petty Officer Jack Nebulax, the Executive Officer of Nazgul Squadron, had just sat down for a talk with Nazgul's leader, Chief Warrant Officer Shazam. Jack was the room to discuss the current status of Senior Crewman Darius, who had been convicted of a crime and sentanced to prison in the spice mines of Kessel.

"There just has to be a way to resuce Darius," Jack said to Shazam. "He doesn't deserve to be there."

"I agree with you, Jack," Shazam began, "but do you realize that any attempt at breaking him out of prison could be considered as an act of treason?"

"I'm aware of the circumstances, but - " Jack tried to say.

"But nothing," Shazam said as he cut his friend off in mid-sentence. "As much as Darius should be set free, I don't want to see another Nazgul squadronmate get jailed for trying to bail another person out!"

"Sir, I want to get Darius out no matter what," Jack annouced clearly. He then toned his voice down to a whisper, "Even if I have to get into jail to get him out. I could make it seem like I was the one who did the crime, no him."

"I don't want my XO in prison!" Shazam burst out. "If we would do this, everyone would be sent to those spice mines for life!"

"I understand, sir. But can you just do me a favor and ask Japheth about a shorter setancing for Dar?" Jack suggested.

"I'll see what I can do. But you have to promise me, no trying to break him out. Don't even discuss this to any of the other squadronmates, okay?"

"Yessir. Understood," Jack said.

"Thanks, Jack. Good bye," Shazam said as Jack got up and left the room. Waiting outside for him were Arturus, DJ234, and Jen Knight, all of them members of Nazgul. They had been listening in on the conversation.

"So what are we going to do, Jack?" DJ asked.

"DJ, no matter what we do, Shazam won't accompany us," Jen said.

"Jen's right, Jack. Nothing will persuade him at this time," Art said sadly.

Jack turned his mechanical right hand into a fist. "No matter what, we're saving Dar from the spice mines. Who's with me?"

After considering the offer, the other three members of Nazgul Squadron spoke their verbal agreement. They all put their hands in on top of Jack's.

"We'll get ready for the mission in a few hours, okay? Nazgul Squadron, in the words of Shazam, Let's do this!" Jack said with a satisfied grin.

DJ had a very uncomfortable feeling, ever so slighty rising until creating a lump in his throat so he could barely talk.  OH, he was extremely uncomfortable, a gut reaction had occured when he suddenly realized he'd be disobeying an commanding part of the Vast Empire personal.

He would speak with Shazam, ask him what he should do.  Yes...  That sounded just good and dandy.

The pilot had been walking all the while he'd been thinking about this when suddenly heard Shazam behind him.

"Whats up man?" he said calmy, patting him on the back, coming out of no-where.

"Oh, uh, not mu-..."

"Whatever, come with me."  Shazam forced him ahead with an abrasive smile that had DJ completely confused.  What the hell?

"OH," Shazam paused for a moment to turn and introduce the three men with him.  Rookies...  "Meet Raddon, Aldur, and Omulis.  New recruits..."  DJ reached out his hand to shake something but found thin air because he was moving once again.

"Now, as you know, Darius has been put away.  For good..."  the commander was talking again, about something...

"Now, although I've forbidden Jack from doing anything at all, I think I will.  AND, since you kids are basically new, and DJ I know your not a rookie anymore, but bare with me..."  A door had mysterioulsy appeared ahead of them and it had begun to slide open slowly.

"You picked the three newest people of your entire squadron?"  JMac asked in utter surpise.

"Couldn't find Jen..."  Shazam had pulled himself in between two chairs so he could stand in front of the wing commander.  JMac looked at each of the chosen few for a few moments then gave Shazam an ardent gaze while handing him four passes.

"Those passes issue you out of this ship for offical Vast Empire matters, you can not be seen without them and you cannot be seen with them.  Do not be seen."  The repition of the one word had made Aldur, Raddon, and Omulis seemingly more shadowy.  They're heads bowed and they glanced frequently at eachother as Shazam passed them out.  DJ stood in the corner, not quite knowing what to say just yet.

"Good luck men."  And JMac sat back down in his seat as the pilots proceeded to the door and farther down the hall to the lift.

"What goin on Shazam?"  DJ was done guessing.

The cheif warrant officer sighed for a moment as if it was overwhelming to have to explain.  "Well, I've decided to go get Darius instead of allowing some good men to get in trouble for trying to do so on there own.  I've invited you to witness this so you can make up an excuse as to why we're gone.  My XO will wonder where his commander and fellow henchman have vanished too..." Shazam's curly hair was pushed a little forward as he gave his most ernest look.

"You brought me here to cover for you?" he looked a little disgusted.

"Mmm...  I wouldn't have put it that way, but yes."  Shazam turned to the doors just before opening to short white corridor with a dark hall on the left hand side that led to the hanger bay.

"Dude, are you serious?"

"He's serious," Aldur piped in from the back.  Dj glared right back at him which shut him up immedietly.

"Sorry, can't have you along this time, I figure this is the right way to break in the new guys though."  The team left the sparkling clean white elevator and fell silent as they approached the hanger bay.  The one remaining in the elevator was just as quiet, but in an angrier more hostile way.  He felt betrayed...  Used?  He didn't know.  What crap.

The young pilot hadn't really thought on it, but he was again moving without notice, the thoughts in his head were that of finalization and justification.  How would he make up an excuse for the guys if he was supposed to be doing that for them...?  He was the middle man, and how awkward it was.

He turned his head around the corridor and noticed the Real Bebop being loaded up with four star fighters along with Page, the coveted craft of Shazam.

The pilots had strode up the ramp and through the doors leading into the pantry/freezer/kitchen.  Had to like that about the cruiser, you could travel from the back to the front in a straight line and anything you would need would be within arms reach.

What was he doing?  OH Crap...  DJ hadn't stopped his brisk walk from the lift, in fact, he had continued right up the ramp of the Gozanti Cruiser.  He could hear the voices of the four pilots making thier way to the cockpit of the ship.  Shazam was helping the others to notice the excellent furnishings of his humble abode while Omulis could stop talking about the space.  Raddon just kept in quiet admiration.  Slaves to Shazams will, he thought melevolently.

Dj went on ahead and took a seat on the couch as the cabin door was shut without another glance outwords.

Take Off...

(So DJ, your with us, let us be surprised, have us react the way we shoud, and make your own case...  We're going to make everything about reaction this time.  That might actually be a good strategy.  No major plots, just characters...  I like that.  Rock on.)

Jack was walking along a corridor when Jen Knight and Arturus came running up to him.

"We've lost DJ to Shazam," Jen said as Jack walked toward them.

"And Shazam managed to get Aldur, Omulis, and Raddon," Art said. "But otherwise, we have everyone else from the squadron."

"Everyone except Darius," Jack said. "Okay guys, listen. We're technically still on vacation time, which means Naval High Command doesn't need to track our whereabouts. This is good. We have time to rescue Dar from the mines of Kessel. But first, we need to gather everyone who's with us and find a secret briefing place."

"What about the medic bays? I'm sure your future wife Alexia will keep us hidden," Jen suggested.

"I'll contact her to see if we could hide in there. But we'll need a backup plan in case they find us in there," Jack said.

"The simulator rooms," Art blurted out. "We can make it seem like we're planning some tactics for a sim. We hook up to one, we can discuss the mission as we practice our shooting skills."

"Good idea, Art," Jack said. "Okay, I'll contact Alexia. If we can't get in there, which I doubt we'll be able to hide in there, we'll go to the sim rooms. Everyone got the plan?"

"Yep," Art replied.

"Sure thing, Jack," Jen replied as well.

"I'll contact you and the rest of the group later on and let you know. I'll see you at the briefing," Jack said as the group split up and headed their separate ways.

Shazam unstrapped himself and stretched his arms upwards with an overly dramatic yawn.

"I am all that is man..."  he said and opened the door at the rear of the cabin, then rubbed his eyes hastilly to rub some invisible vision inhibitor  away.

"Holy crap."  Aldur as if to let Shazam know to look, who in turn sighed for a moment as if he knew exactly what was before him.

"I might as well let you know, Jack was going to head a group out to Kessel anyways.  With or without you..."  DJ said with no expression of any kind.

The commander of Nazgul squadron nodded as he just began to look upon him.

"Yea, I know, I was kind of hoping you might stay behind to keep him from doing that..."

"I was going to go with him actually, but then I figured I'd best see what your problem with the whole deal was..."  He was playing with a pen he'd found in the seat next to him.

"Mmm...  Don't worry about it.  Another good man to lose to a court marshall or the mines of Kessel.  Yeeha."  Sarcasm was intended as alwasy.

"Why exactly did you bring the new recruits?"  Dj querried.

"Why do you ask?  Your here arn't you?"  Shazam took a seat on the couch on Dj's left.

"Well, I mean, wouldn't it be more dangerous ..."

"Don't worry about them, they're hear for reconassaince...  You can come with me if you'd like."  The recruits sat themselves down as well.

"Alright..."

"I was joking, but ok."  All of them nodded now.

"Right then, enough of..."

"Your not going to yell at me or freak out or nothin?"  DJ interupted.  The commander turned his head sharply.

"It doesn't matter because if we screw up now we'll end up worse than any court marshall or dishonorable discharge.  Keep your mouth shut, keep your mind striaght, and be invisible.  You do not need me to yell at you, your insolence alone is punishment enough."

The lead of flight three fell completely silent as the hissed, scathing words stopped rolling off the tongue of his commander.

"Now then, as I beleive I breifed your three before," Shazam glanced at his three new recruits,"  This mission is remarkably dangerous if we are caught or identified.  This could mean the end of your lives if we don't keep out distance.  We will be in and out, as quickly as possible..."

"Alright, what must we do sir?" Raddon finally spoke.

(Don't be afraid to post some stuff here now...  Don't be bashful.  I might edit this I suppose.)

Knight walked away from their secret conversation with a small smirk painted across her face. They were going to do it. They, without any their Squadron leader's help, was going to rescue Darius. "I can't believe this actually might work!" Jen burst out to herself, eyes focused intently on her hands.
"And going behind Shazam's back, no less!--"

Corwin, one of the newest recruits was struting down the hallway towards her, still clutching on to his bag of brought supplies . "I don't think we have met before."

Jen smiled and extended her right hand. "No, I don't believe we have. Crewman Corwin, I am Petty Officer 2nd Class Jen Knight. Welcome to the Nazgul Squadron."

He grasped on for a firm handshake. "Thank you, ma'am. Can I ask you a question?" Corwin lifted his bag off his shoulder, setting it gently on the floor.

"Sure, you are always free to ask questions and you don't have to call me ma'am, Jen will do just fine."

"Alright, cool. Uh, I just got back from basic training and I was wondering where the barracks were, or somewhere to put my stuff. I've been carrying this around for awhile now.." Corwin patted the top of his bag, which seemed to be filled to the brim with stuff.

Jen turned right and started walking down a different hallway." Follow me. I'm suprised they didn't show you where this was after you completed BT."

Corwin's eyes averted Jen's green ones. "Yeah..I wandered off from the group and got lost. Then I saw you."

"That was lucky you did. Here we are." Jen stopped in front of a black metal door and opened it. "You can put all the things you can manage to fit in there. This room is yours."

Corwin stepped inside and threw the bag on his bed. "Ooh, cozy." He smiled, leaning against the doorway.

A huge grin spread across Jen's lips. "Yep, it can be as comfortable as you will it to be...Hmm tell me. Has Shazam, our Squadron leader, talked to you?"

"Nope, haven't met him yet. Why? Should I go speak with him?" Corwin looked around and started to close the door to his room.

"No!" Jen pushed Corwin inside with a good shove and slammed the door behind her. "Uh..I mean...you don't need to yet.."

Corwin raised a brow and stared up at Jen from his current spot on the floor. "What's going on?"

"It might take awhile to explain.." Jen's back rested against the door, the cool metal seeped through her uniform, sending a chill up her spine.

"I have time. Tell me."

Close to two hours later, Jen had finished the Squadron's story.

"..And that's why we must get Darius back. Shazam won't let us go with his permission, but a few still of us are still determined to go the mines and save him." Jen was sitting on the floor next to Corwin, her legs resting underneath her.

"I want to come with you...I wanna meet this Darius guy."

Jen's eyes lit up. "You do? You will?! This is great!" She pushed herself off the floor and stretched her arms high above her head. "There's going to be a meeting soon, so we can figure some of the basics out. I'll come get you when it starts...Oh and don't metion this to anyone. If we are found out..we could end up with the same fate as Darius. Or worse. Ok?" Her face hardened as she spoke with little emotion.

"Yeah, yeah...I got it." Corwin got up and opened the door for Jen. "Thanks for taking all that time to explain what happened to you guys."

"No problem. Cya around." She smiled, playfully saluting to him as she turned to walk out the door.

(Jen, is your character a bit of a flirt?  Lol, that'd be cool is all I'm sayin...)

"I suppos the real question to all of this is..." Shazam leaned back in his seat while keeping his eyes moving about the room.

"How are we ganna do it?" Aldur butt in.

"Uhhh...  Yea.  I suppose that goes hand in hand with figuring out exactly where he is, althogh I have this," Shazam threw a datadisk onto the small night stand to his right.  "His encampment, cell...  Lucky room mates..." A couple of grins appeared.  "I assume he won't be staying in the same spot all day though.  Chances are he'll be in the mines before long, which might I add are extremely dangerous." An image of those spiders sent a cold sensation down his spine, his eyes looking off into the distance as if he knew of them well.

"Point being, we need to get him out of there before too long...  And maybe we'll want to coordinate our efforts with Jack's group, or atleast warn him of our plans."  Dj added who was at the edge of his recliner, hands clasped together with his feet squarely attached to the ground.

"Mind you we can't force our way in there either!" Omulis said from a corner.

"And we wouldn't be safe even if we were inside the prison and cleared by those governing it.  Its only like twenty percent human.  I've heard some stories that would make your blood curtle..." Raddon had furowed his eyebrows a little and kept a kind of crooked posture that made Shazam believe him.

"I think we're going to need a direct route to Darius' cell then...  We could very well get lost on our way through their as well.  That place is absolutely huge..."  Shazam was beginning to have a slighty clearer idea of what he might be doing.

"I think we'll have to get his schedule and some blue prints of his detention area before we decide on anything.  I think I'll have a meeting with one of thier reps..."  The chief warrant officer glanced at each of his men.

"I'll go with you..."  Aldur insisted bravely.

"So will I..."  Omulis stood from his seat and pulled out a datapad to put down some notes from the conversation.

"I suppose we're all goin," Raddon concluded after looking back and forth from DJ to the rest of the group.

"Y'know...  I've always wanted to pretend I was some kind of diplomat..."  Shazam grinned....

Jack keyed on his comlink. "Kessel Group," he said into his comlink to some of his fellow squadronmates, "We'll have to meet in the simulator rooms. Alexia said that the her area might not be a good place to meet. So, everyone into the sims in half a standard hour."

Jen Knight replied, "Got you, Jack. We'll see you soon."

"Good, everyone. See you in half an hour." Then he clicked off the comm and began to walk around for a little bit.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After walking around the Star Destroyer, Jack decided that it was time. He headed for the simulators and found Art practicing some shooting.

"Glad you could make it, Art," Jack said.

"Always ready to help someone," Art replied. "Where's everyone else?"

"I suppose that they're coming now," Jack said.

Just as he said that, Corwin, Jen, and the rest of Nazgul that was going to Kessel with Jack walked in.

"Ready to get hooked up?" Corwin said with excitement.

"Come on, let's get this briefing on now," Jen said.

"Yeah, I'm ready to rescue Darius," Art said.

"Okay, let's get hooked up," Jack said as his teammates hooked up to simulators. They prepared for the briefing. But first, a little target practice wouldn't hurt.

Darius winced as his wounds were rubbed into the salty ground.  "Git up, you traitor scum!" said the guard that was leading him to his cell.

Darius was now covered from head to toe in the reddish soil of Kessel's infertile soil.  He began to rise, but the guard grabbed him and threw him against the door.

"Open it!"  Darius looked at the security lock and fell back to the ground.

"You worthless pile of bantha shit!"  The guard spat on Darius.  He drug him inside the complex and to the first cell on the left.

The cell door opened to reveal a Rodian and a Wookie laying on the only two cots in the cell.

"Git up and into yer cell!" continued the guard.

"I'm quite comfortable right here," spoke Darius for the first time while on planet.  It's his silence that gave him a gash on the forehead and two rebroken ribs.  "Why don't you join me?"

Before the guard could speak, Darius swept his feet from under him.  He wrapped his legs around the man's throat, grabbed the handle of the door, and slammed the man's head against the wall.

Darius turned around and managed to unlock his stun binders with guards sercurity key.  He grabbed the guards stun baton and ran down to the opposite end of the hallway.

Creatures of all races and color cheered as he passed their cell.  They banged on their cell doors tried to touch Darius.

He reached the end of the hallway and opened the door to be greeted by five guards.  He tightened his breath mask and the first guard charged.  He met him with a knee to the gut and a stun baton in the back of the neck.

He grabbed that guard's baton and threw it at the next charging guard.  It connect with his face and he fell to the ground convulsing.

The next two guards came together.  Darius dropped and sweeped kicked one, switched feet, and connected his left foot with the other man's genitals.

The last guard was unarmed, but huge.  Darius got up and ran, spearing the man.  They both fell with Darius on top.  He blocked the guards chop to the neck and began punching him it the face.

By the time he was done, his hands were covered in blood.  He suddenly felt a sharp pain in his shoulder.  He looked down to see a dart, looked up and saw the boot of a prisoner.

*********************

Darius woke up in a white room, filled with beds and medical supplies.  His breath mask was gone and the air was pure.  A Rodian and a Wookie entered and he recognized them immediatly.  They were his cell mates.

The Rodian pulled up a stool and sat next to his bed.  "You took quite a beating.  You probably don't even remember it."  His basic was terrible.  Darius could hardly understand him.

"You can speak Rodian, I'll understand you a hell of a lot better."  It hurt to speak.  Darius looked down and found his bed covered in blood.  He couldn't see his legs.  They were covered by a machine.

The Rodian spoke in his native language, "My name is Lidoo.  The wookie is called Wroolsh.  Before the guards had even gotten to you, one of the local gangs had taken the liberty of breaking both your legs.  You won't be walking for a while, but when you do, I expect you'll thrown in the arena before the mines.  Not many people have ever taken on five guards before."

"Why is my bed covered in blood?"

"Well," Lidoo continued, "when the guard arrived, they took over and beat your unconscious body with clubs.  They went even further and removed one of you ribs by hand.  Don't worry, you now have five steel ribs.  The medical droid found it necessary because of the shape some of them were in.  You lost a lot of blood in surgery.  You're lucky though.  This one ought to go in the records.  Our friend Wroolsh here has the same blood type as you.  He's grown somewhat fond of you now."

Darius managed to smile, "thanks Wroolsh, I owe you one."

The wookie just stood there with is massive arms across his chest.

Lidoo spoke again, "don't mind if he doesn't speak.  He has no tongue.  Plus, you probably wouldn't understand him anyway."

"Don't speak so hasty.  I understand wookie quite well."

"They you will make easy friends with the wookie gang in this facility.  I will let you rest now, our mining shift has almost begun."

"I'll see you in the cell later." Darius concluded.  Lidoo nodded and left.  The wookie followed him and turned to gesture at the nightstand next to him.  Sitting there, was two more pints of blood.  Darius knodded.

The medical droid entered the room with a needle in hand.  "Time for you pain killer, Mr. Pursius."

"Wait, how many steel ribs do you have left?"

"Enough to replace the rest of your ribcage.  Why do you ask sir?"

"Replace the rest of them.  I keep breaking them.  Try not to lose so much blood this time."  He was going to need them.

(Doin a good job guys, lets use this story to do a little practice now...)

Shazam and DJ were currently doing thier best to navigate the maw with as much cushion as possible.  Everyone had heard stories of the magnificent Kessel smuggling runs, but they'd also heard of people vanquishing in the Maw with sufficient space, so it was best to gets some distance and travel at a pretty good rate.

In the back, the recruits were trying thier best to organize all the crap that Shazam randomly purchased.

"You can get this stuff on a commanders paycheck?"  Aldur joked.  He was playing with the weapons supply Shazam kept under lock and key.  Which begged the question-

"How'd you get in there?" Raddon raised his eyebrows and scurried next to his squadron member like a little boy trying to play with his friends toys.

Omulis continued to rumage.  He glanced to his right for a moment, but then glanced right back suddenly realizing it was another closet.  Holy crap this thing was loaded, he thought to himself.

He stood up as the other two continued to bicker and pushed the door release and manually slid it to the left.

"Guys, check this out..."  The other two turned thier heads and then clammored over to investigate.

"Where does he get this stuff?"  Raddon queried as he dug his hand in between the various armored suits and costumes.

"Imperial officer's uniform?"  Omulis noticed.

"I think this is armor from the royal guard, heh"  Aldur pulled it out and started t check out the fittings.  "I think we have enough to convince them of our status..." he continued.

"Except ID cards..." Omulis ponited out.

"Nope, it appears Shazam has the idenification along with the clothing here, must have stripped them right off the people wearing them, heh..."

"Actually I was working in the dry cleaning protion of a star destroyer before I was put into a squadron...  Plenty of obortunity to make copies..."  Shazam was followd closely by DJ as they appeared from the middle hallway.

"We're out of the Maw already?"  Aldur was starting to think they had beaten the record.

"Well, kinda.  WE're in a straight away for the next fifteen minutes, so I figured this was the best time to..."  Shazam noticed DJ nodding behind him," Dude, get back there...."  He said in an irritated voice.

"OH..."  DJ sprinted back to the co-pilots chair..."

"Figured it was the perfect opportunity to see what you guys found.  I can't remember half the stuff I have."  The commander shrugged and got all fours to see.

"Imperial Royal Guard passes?" Raddon couldn't beleive it.

"Actually, just royal guard passes.  Those are back from the day of the Republic.  I have the costumes too, but theier blue.  I think we can paint the helmets red and find some fabric of the same color."

"I can mess with these ID's,"  Aldur said confidently.

"Alright, maybe we can get Dar out without any trouble at all.  Especially if they think I was sent with the Royal Guard.  Then again, maybe we shouldn't over do it..."

"Nah..." they shrugged all at once and went to work....

(Lol, start exploring those characters people.)

Arturus finished up the shooting exercised and exited the sim.  His body was unusually sweaty and his eyes were sunken into his face, a consequence of the lack of rest he had had since visiting the temple.  Wiping his head and face with a towel, he made his way quickly out of the sim room before the rest had a chance to finish stripping off the sensors.

Heading down the hall, Arturus quickly made his way in the Nazgul area and entered his quarters.  His mind was exhausted and stretched to the limit from the frustration and anger he felt from the glimpses of his past that taunted his inability to remember them.  Art poured himself a drink and sat down uncomfortably onto one of the chairs, placing a bottle of stiff brandy on the table beside him.  His body seemed to wilt in the chair, his muscles clearly in need of a good rest that he could just not seem to have.  In the last few weeks, the stress, and emotional pain and coupled with his normally intense nature and had taxed his energy and strength.  He had begun to drink heavier, even trying to pass out from the alcohol on one occasion before Taylsha slapped some sense into him.

A few moments later, Taylsha entered the room.  She was still technically on vacation as well and was hoping to be able to get off the ship again before she had to go back to her job.  A frown crossed her face for a moment when she saw the bottle but it quickly turned to a look of concern.

"Still unable to settle your mind?"  She asked as she leaned over the chair and kissed the top of his head gently.

"No."  He said, standing up slowly and giving her a hug.

"You look horrible."  She said to him as she held him tight.  It had only been a couple of days since they had come back but he had not slept more than an hour or two a day and when he did sleep, he was restless and mumbled often.

"It'll pass again, it has in the past."  He replied, his voice still strong.  "I don't know what I'd do without you though."  he said a moment later, his voice cracking slightly as tears appeared in his eyes.  "You could have any man you want and yet you stay with one who is cracking up right in front of you."  He continued.

"Don't say things like that."  Taylsha rebuked softly.  "You are not cracking up, you just need to comfront what you feel rather than deny it."  She said softly.  "Come on, let's get some coffee and breakfast."  She said.  Inside, her patience was beginning to be stretched as well.  She hadn't slept much either, her mind restless as she wrestled with her own emotions.  She had seen periods of emotional distress in Arturus before but this was the most prolonged and upsetting yet.  She did take hope, however, that it could mean that he would finally be able to comfront his feelings and understand them, thus putting his mind finally at ease.  Once he finally gets his mind distracted again, the emotional shock will dissipate and we both will be able to deal with it better.  She thought to herself as the two made their way down towards the officer's mess.  She had tried to distract his mind by utilizing her body, but while he had certainly been interested and gotten involved, she knew it didn't feel the same and was simply creating a facade of calm for a few minutes.  I hope he gets sent on a mission asap.  She thought, if it isn't a flying one, I'll go with him and hopefully after the mission we can finish our vacation time in romantic fashion.  That would help settle things very well.  Taylsha planned.

The simulator practice/"mission" briefing had gone well. Everyone now knew what they had to do. They all had to land on Kessel, find the place where Darius was being held, and break him out without causing any deaths. But that wasn't all. They then had to wait for Darius's name to be cleared so that he could be brought back to the Vast Empire with ease. It was tricky, but with the right teamwork, they could pull it off.

Jack had his mind on the upcoming mission now as he walked back to his quarters aboard the Star Destroyer. They would have to get Darius out in one shot - therefore meaning there could be absolutely no mistakes at all. But they also needed disgusses. But what? Prison wardens? No. They would most likely need clearances that would be hard to get. Guards? Possibly. They could pretend to have been transfered to that strench of cells where Darius was being kept. Or prisoners? Maybe. Some of the group members could act as guards and others as prisoners to sneak in almost unnoticed. Jack was in such a concentrative thought that he almost walked by Alexia at his door.

"Jack!" she yelled, running to him and kissing him. "I heard about your, um, plans."

"It's going to be tough," Jack admitted. "I'm sorry, but or marriage will have to wait just a little bit later."

"I'm aware of that. I love you, flyboy. I brought you a gift for the raid," she said, whispering the word "raid."

"What is it?" Jack asked as they walked in the door.

"It's a box of smoke canisters. Whenever you get into a tight situtation, just pull out the tab, throw the canister, and cover your mouth, eyes, and nose," Alexia said as Jack smiled.

"Thanks, Alexia," Jack said. She was about to walk out when Jack motioned her back in.

"Come on, just stay a little bit longer," Jack said as the door closed completely.

By the time the two arrived back at Art's quarters, Art had begun to perk up again and was in better spirits.  Even though he hadn't slept, his face began to look fresher and his body wasn't sagging as much.  Having a mission on his mind and being with Taylsha had combined to reinvigorate him for the short-term.

Once inside his quarters, Art sat down at his computer terminal while Taylsha made some coffee.  He logged in and began to search for the complete layout for the Kessel facility.  Twenty minutes and two cups of coffee later, he leaned back with a smug smile of satisfaction on his face.  "Alright honey, time to do your magic."  He said, wheeling his chair back and spinning around to face her.  Taylsha pulled up her chair and began to put her computer skills to work, quickly getting through the security system undetected.  The plans began printing seconds later.  "You're a genius."  He said giving her a kiss.

"What would you ever do without me?"  She asked playfully, kissing him back.  Art got up to pour another cup of coffee, bringing one back to Taylsha as well.  The plans finished printing and Taylsha began to work on the security codes for the facility scheduel.  Accessing that would give them a complete run down of patrols, when they changed the guard, and when they could expect slaves being moved from the mines to their cells.  It would also give them a better idea about how many people would be on guard at any one time and an estimate of how many soldiers guarded the facility.

Meanwhile, Art had begun to study the plans that he had laid across the coffee table.  He wanted to memorize the important locations, especially guard posts and hiding places.  He was especially fortunate in that the plans also contained the location of the computer and communications centre and the video surveillance cameras that fed into the centre.  As he stared at the plans, he began to infer where guard patrols would be set up and in what ways it would be best to disable or avoid them while at the same time, disabling or avoiding the cameras.  His mind wasn't photograpic but with a little planning, he would remember all of what he needed to know.

A few minutes later, Taylsha exclaimed, "I did it!"  With a big smile on her face she again taunted Art about her value to him while holding a copy of the weekly scheduel for the facility.

"Enough of your taunting!"  He said laughing and before she could respond he kissed her.  Breaking off, he glanced over the scheduel and set it down on the table.  "I'm starving, want to grab a bite to eat?"  He said.  Taylsha looked down at her watched and noticed that they had been at it for hours.  She nodded in agreement and the two filed the plans into Art's briefcase and made their way down to the officer's lounge.  On the way back, they would bring the plans to Jack and go over what key points they had found.

Darius slipped on his breath mask and walked out of the medical center.  A massive line of slaves were walking back to their cells.  Darius joined and entered the complex and found his cell.  Lidoo and Wroolsh weren't there yet, so Darius decided to wait patiently.

As Darius waited, two guards entered, grabbed him, and threw him against the wall.  One of them spoke, "you missed you shift.  That means double shift for you.  Get going!"

"No need to shove gentlemen," Darius replied with no emotional expression at all.

"You think you're smart, don't you?" asked the other one.  The guard swung his baton, no longer a stun baton.  Darius' hand snapped up and caught it mid-swing.

"This is getting pretty old," he replied with the same emotionless tone.  The guard smiled.

Something coiled around his leg, and left a sharp pain, and then nothing at all.  He tried to put weight on it, but fell to the ground.  He turned and saw another guard with a neuronic whip in his hands.  Darius no longer could feel, or control his leg.

The two guards in the cell laughed with pleasure as Darius tried to get up.  The one with the whip spoke, "off to the mines with you!"  The guards laughed even harder.

Darius knew better then to retaliate this time.  He grabbed onto the bed and eased himself up, onto one leg.  He hopped out of the room, and made his way to the utility building to acquire thermal goggles, and mining equipment.

*******************

A turbolift slowly lowered them into them into the mines.  Darius was standing next to dozens of wookies.  The all looked at him as if they were going to kill him in the near future.  The tallest one started grumbling to the wookie next to him.

Darius replied in his emotionless tone to the conversation not meant for him, "you see, that's not going to work.  I've got two other cellmates, one of them being a wookie."

The tall wookie turned and roared at him.  Darius averted his eyes.  He wished not to challenge the wookie leader.

"That's quite the threat.  I'm sure you and your friends could kill me where I stand, but what's that going to do for you?"  Darius kept a straight face, make no change in pitch in his voice.  He showed no fear.

The wookie grumbled again.

"Do I hear a compliment?"  Darius was allowing more emotion in his voice now.  He made eye contact with the wookie.  "I used to work with a wookie once.  That's why I understand your language.  My friend saved my life several times.  Sadly, he was shot dead by Imperial stormtroopers, honoring what my father and I had worked so to build."

The wookie reached out and Darius did not flinch.  The massive hand rested upon Darius' head.  The wookie ruffled Darius short hair and grumbled.

"Thank you.  I'm honored to be a friend of your gang."  Darius smiled slightly.

The doors to the lift slowly opened, and darkness filled the lift.

****************

Darius worked closely with the wookie gang.  Energy spiders and bogeys were not fun to mess with.  If you stayed in groups, you were often safe from harm.

Darius really hadn't worked to make too many friends.  It was hard on Kessel.  You couldn't be independent and live long.  Gangs and groups have formed everywhere.  If you weren't part of them, you'd surely die in the mines, or by them.

Some gangs even realized that escaped was not possible.  Eventually, that's when they discovered the by helping the guards, they could get special treatment.  Half-shifts, extra rations, surplus water, occasional alcohol, free entertainmet, ect.

The former Imperial pilot was careful in choosing his group.  The gangs mainly consisted of strict, single races.  There were Imperial and New Republic gangs, but Darius knew that there would be backstabbing and traitors within them.  He knew that with his knowledge of languages and past history, he had a good chance a befriending the best gang there was on Kessel: the wookies.

Nobody dared anger them.  They were ferocious and kept their wit about them in the mines.  Being that they were use to hard labor, they remained sharp and strong.

Wookies honor life-debts and friendships with high esteem.  They are very loyal to friends, and would never harm one who helped them.  That is why Darius picked them to befriend, and this is the way he planned to survive.  Hopefully to escape someday.

Darius turned on his beam drill and began drilling.  He had been down here for 10 hours already.  The only thing that kept him going, was a game he played with himself.  He'd see how fast he could find a vein of spice.  Once he did, he'd alert the guards and move on to find another one.

Suddenly, his goggles glared, and he could no longer see.  He winced, closed his eyes, and tightened the safety guard on his shoulder.  Taking off his goggles, he discovered the cavern to be filled with light.  Darius moved to find Jordoolsha, his newly befriended wookie clan leader.

Dozens of bogeys entered the cavern, bouncing around.  The giant energy balls kept coming.

"Everybody out!" screamed the guards.  This was unusual.  It's very rare to catch more than one bogey in the same cavern at once.  There was only one logical explanation: energy spiders.

The bogey were dropping beings left and right.  Darius thought to himself - it must be hatching season.  These spiders are very clever, chasing bogeys into a mining cavern to stun people.

Darius could now use his leg again.  He hobbled as fast as he could, and saw that the wookies were throwing everybody out of the lift, literally.  It was now filling with the wookie gang.  There would be little for anyone else.

Thinking of the only way he could get inside, he drew his drill like a gun, and continued to hobble toward the lift.

Darius tripped over a stalagmite as a bogey flew over his head.  It was going for the opening of the lift and this was his only chance.  He fired the drilled, not killing, but knocking the creature of it's original course.  Instead of going in the lift, it missed and bounced off the wall to hit a guard, raising his weapon at the wookies.

Even though Darius had saved the wookies, he would never make it in time, the doors were closing.

Suddenly, Darius was lifted off of the damp cavern floor, and thrown over a furry shoulder.  Jordoolsha ran with impossible speed.  He hurdled stalagmites and dodged bogeys as if he had been doing it all of his life.

They squeezed through the doors as the last possible moment.  Darius looked out of the closing doors and glimpse at the eye-filled, mirror-like spiders enter the cavern to collect their prey.

Darius scratched the larged wookie on the back of the neck.  "I owe you too."

The walk was a slightly treacherous one although it was only about a ten steps, because most everyone had a weapon...  That is, the guards, probably the people trying to get into the front desk and see the man in charge.  People didn't like to see thier family thrown into this place, because they never returned.  But anyone who knows anything about Kessel is the only way to get some one out the camps is to create some ingenius scheme to escape, or to get permission to take them.  Escaping is practically impossible...  And getting permission is absolutely insane in itself.

"You say that you are with the Vast Empire Military?"  This was one of the over priveledged inmates who had been brought up when Moruth Doole took over as administrator.

"That's Rear Admiral Mrasmar of the Imperial Navy..."  Shazam hissed in the way he'd seen many officers on the bridge of various star destroyers do before.  He must have played it perfectly because-

"Well then.  Right this way, I'll take you to our head of prison records.  He also heads the in-mate distribution unit, knows where everyone is at all times..."  This particular prisoner had a girly walk that made the group of Nazgulians wonder...

Shazam had outfitted himself with the Imperial officers uniform while the others made up thier pretty intimidating Royal Guard uniforms.  Good thing about being a royal guard, is as long as your the right height and wear the right clothing, you don't have to say anything and everyone knows you can kick thier ass, thought Shazam.

The rodian ahead put a code into the security system on the side of the door that seems to be several layers thick, and allowed for it to slide open with general ease.  Beyond was a very large room, kind of musty but also well kept.  In the center there was a dark man who appeared to have been formally educated, but appeared to have dealt with several prisoners.  And their families...

He glanced upwards as if this was the day some one would sticka knife in him or he'd end up getting sent away for masacring another group of faculty members...

However, after seeing that shining red helmet, he seemed to lose faith in him being the victor and more likely a victim.  Aldur was right behind Shazam while the other two formed up directly behind him.

The only problem with the costumes is Shazam didn't actually have the weapons' the guards used.  So, instead, they carried several small blasters connect to thier legs.  Shazam had cut his hair very recently so he looked his part.

The plan at the moment, was to get the plans from this guy as to where Dar was, retreive him, and exit without any trouble.  If that didn't happen...

"You can not release Darius Persius, or you will not?"  Shazam darkened his tone a little.  Read Admirals could be intimidating too...

"I'm saying we cannot without official consent from the Imperial Fleet." This man had a very angry look when he was questioned.  He was one of those types who built up his anger and let it explode at the wrong time...

"Are we not consent?  I am the word of the fleet at this moment..." Shazam said with the air of an officer.

"No...  I need proof...  Documents...  But we'll allow you to see him.  That's about all I can do for you...." the rodian supressed a smile.

Shazam glanced back at his guards...

(Hmm... You can help us here as well...)

Jack was walking along in the corridors of the Star Destroyer, thinking over the upcoming mission for himself and a few of Nazgul members. It would definitely be tough, but they had pletty of supplies, including smoke grenades that Alexia had given them. Also, they had other objects that could help them bust Darius out of prison on Kessel.

Now that they had the gear, they needed fake identities. Who could get them fake I.D. cards? More importantly, could they pass for these people? They would have to try.

As Jack continued to walk down a corridor, Arturus came up from behind him. "Where's Shazam?" he asked Jack.

"I have no idea, Art. Sorry," Jack said.

"It's okay," Arturus replied.

"Did you check his quarters?" Jack asked him.

"Yes, I did. He wasn't there," Art said.

"Before you go," Jack began, "we need fake I.D.'s to get into the prison on Kessel. Do you have any idea on how we can get some?"

"I'll check with everyone who's going with us. I'm sure someone knows how we can obtain them," Art replied.

"Thanks. I'll look for my own means of getting fake I.D.'s as well," Jack said as Art walked away.

In Jack's state of thought, he didn't realize that he was near an Army armor storage room. That gave him an idea.

"Stormtroopers!" he said aloud, finally realizing how they could penetrate the defenses on Kessel. "Stormtrooper armor! Yes!"

(Well guys, I thought of this. Now hopefully we can get suited up and leave soon. Feel free to talk a bit before we leave just to get a feeling for it.)

(Huh...  This could be interesting, get yourselves over here...)

There was a certain tension that surrounded the group as they made thier way through the encampments.  Something about the guards just made it all very thrilling...  Why would they be here?  Are they after someone?

Everyone has heard stories of the Imperial Royal Guard, Shazam's presence in the officers uniform just made it a little more formal.  No officer is ever really accompinied by the royal guard though, but they didn't know that.

A small group seemed to be following them, Shazam noticed, as they reached the portion of the camp where most of the wookies presided.  Now, your placed pretty sporadically in the camps, but it was indeed possible to be placed with in a certain clump if you knew what to do.  Darius was either extremely dead, or very lucky by now.

Shazam glanced at one of the guards upon reaching the empty cell.  "They said Darius Percius was here.  Where is your prisoner sir?"

"Why your right here.  Welcome to the Imperial Prison Camps of Kessel." The dark man from before had appeared beind them, the grin from before was now several times larger.

"At ease men..." Shazam said in defeat...

(We're doin this the old fashion way.  YEE HA!!)

"At ease men..." Shazam said in defeat...

DJ looked at shazam and then to the guard how was our cover blown? Who found out? Do we have a spy?, all these things were inside DJ's head. Finally he rested on one answer. What will we do now?.

"After all this chasing these past few hours we finally got you" the dark man said.

"What do you mean" DJ said

"what i mean you weak excuse for a human is that when we first saw you in your officers uniform and these so-called royal guards behind you, we knew something was wrong". He said

"So what now" Raddon asked

"well now you will be in a cell until we can get some real officers to deal with you" He said.

Being thrown into the cell hurt but i didn't expect it to be like this i thought they belived and we wouldn't have to risk they lives of the other.

"So what do we do now" Raddon asked with fear in his voice.

"Now we find a way to escape" Shazam said

"And i think i know a way to do so" DJ said while searching in his boot for his dagger. "wow i thought they would have checked us for any weapons. but i guess they thought we came unarmed."

Pulling it out he started fiddling with the lock until..."Click" the door swung open.

With a happy look on his face he turned around to face his companions who looked shocked on how he pulled it off. "What i know how to open locks."

"Come on lets get our stuff and get Darius out of here" Shazam said.

(Whoa now, lol, settle down buddy.)

"What the hell?" said the guard who had been standing about four feet from the cell.  Well done DJ, though Shazam.  However, it was indeed foolish of them to leave someone in thier clothing unless...

The guard was running to close the cell and unstrap the weapon from his side as Shazam opened a small pocket of the utility belt he'd worn.  Still an officer's uniform, just with more things to go with it, he grinned.

"Quiet now..." Raddon whispered as Shazam suddenly undid the cap to a concentrated seditive and launched it into the vein running across the large creatures face.  Shazam wasn't one hundred percent it would work because he didn't know exactly what the creature was, but he did have a couple of extra doses...  Just in case ya know.

The guard grunted and let his eyes relax before finally losing his grip on the cell door and plummeting to the ground with a loud 'thud'.

"We have to move quickly..." Aldur mentioned as they exited over the body.  DJ stripped the weapon off of the guard, realizing it was only a stun baton, it would actually be useful.  Before they had even made contanct with the ground, the commander had made a complete outline of how they should handle situations.  Killing anyone was out of the question.

The cell that they were put in were contained, controlled, and breathable.  The air outside was quite the opposite.  Within a few minutes the group was starting to feel the affects as they scampered around within the shadows, avoiding any open areas.  They had traveled from their rectangular cell, past the garrison area, through the secured door and out into the camp.  They should have checked for mask, Shazam knew.  Thanks to those seditives, there hadn't been a single casualty...  Yet....

"Guys..." Shazam hacked as the air became extremely unstable.  They were dying out there...  "Go for that little outpost there..." he couched hard for another long moment.  The others were beginning to do so as well.

The area was mostly clear as things were becoming darker.  You were either in the mines pulling a double shift or you were sleeping for a couple of hours to prepare for hte next laboring.  The group hobbled across the way without being obvserved by anybody.  The door ahead was of course locked once they reached it, but Shazam seemed to be on that as well as he pulled out another small cartride.  Everyone else was hunched down while thier leader stood crooked against the door frame.  He was trying to insert an end of his little garage door opener into the circuit tray behind the dirty white cover he'd just ripped off.

"What the..." Shazam began to fall to his knees.

"What's the problem?"  DJ querried as his eyes sunk into the back of his head.

"No charge..." Aldur was about ready to go into a sleepy doom while Raddon seemed to be quite well awake.  His eyes focused on the little gizmo and his left hand grabbed the stunner out of DJ's hand.  Suddenly the door was open and the Nazgul squadron pilots clammered through.  A man at the supply depot checkout glanced over and began to point his blaster down upon them as Raddon removed the stun baton and appeared in the entrance, flinging it at the man.

He moved from behind the counter to dodge the weapon and tryed to re-aquire his targets, but they were gone.  The room about probably no more than twenty feet across and fifteen feet wide, but several panels that spired upwards made the place into kind of a maze with unlimeted weapons and gas mask.    The depot man breathed heavilly as he dropped to the ground and began to crawl forward towards his booth again, he had to contact some one.

"NOW!"  Shazam yelled over a the sound of a charred communications device.  The commander looked down on the depot manager as he sat on top of the array, but his eyes rolled into the back of his head as both DJ and Raddon took an arm.  Aldur had landed behind them just afterwords, plunging the needle into the side of his neck.

"Man, we're good...  Grab what you can."

(No planning needed, he he.  Now take it easy DJ, we can't be in and out like originally planned...  Be patient.)

All of the members of the group Jack had gathered to set off to Kessel were present in Stormtrooper uniforms. Jack couldn't tell who was which unless they took off their helmets.

Good, Jack thought. "Okay, troops," he said, trying to sound like a Stormtrooper commander, "Let's get onboard. We'll be departing to Kessel soon. Everyone have their gear?"

Everyone replied with a quick "Yes" as some of the members did final checks. They were ready. Darius would soon be rescued, and it would hopefully be back to normal. They could not fail. If Shazam would find them... That could be even more horrible than not saving Darius from the spice mines.

But they couldn't think of failure. It was do or do not. There was no try. The members of the group boarded the transport one by one. Jack was the last one to get on before the hatch closed. He and Art would be piloting the shuttle as the rest of the group prepared the tools they would all use. They gave their transmission codes to the voice.

"Everything's checked out," the voice on the comm said. "We're preparing to open the magnetic shield."

There was a reading on the display that the shield was down as the craft hummed to life and lifted off the floor. The shuttle zoomed out of the hangar bay into deep space, waiting to be as far away from the Star Destroyer as possible. They finally got the coordinates from the navcomputer, and suddenly the stars became starlines as the shuttle shot off into the depths of hyperspace.

(Okay, guys, we're off. Feel free to chat on board the shuttle. I'll post in a while and take us out of lightspeed and land on Kessel.)

Shazam sat in silence with the others for about ten minutes, handing each of them a medication from depot medicine cabinet.

"Man...  That could have been bad..." Shazam breathed a little lighter than before.  Everyone nodded in agreement as they sat in a small circle around the body of the manager.  DJ had taken the key card from the manager and made his way to the collumn housing stun equipment.  Now  Aldur was back up and seemed to be messing with a computer terminal and continuously checking the time above the console.  Raddon kept his position quietly, staring at the motionless mass before him.

"So what are we doin?" DJ wondered aloud as he slid the keycard through another collumn, releasing the glass doors around them.

"Well, we still need to figure out where Dar is...  That would probably be smart..." Shazam pointed out.

"I'm doing that now sir..."  Aldur chimed in from the back.  Shazam glanced left to see exactly what he was doing.

"Your doing what?" the commander was kind of shocked.  "Where do you people come from..."  He didn't even want to know how he managed to get himself from a depot checkout into the prisoner locations.

"Not to mention your XO..." Raddon seemed transfixed on a point.  The one opposite him grinned then chuckled.

"Somethin tells me he's ganna try something along the lines of what we just did...  Ganna have to figure out exactly what they're up to before they..."  There was a knock at the door.  Shazam jumped up to lock the door as it slid open after no longer than a second.

Raddon had the stun baton again as Shazam was thrown on his back, two armed guards pushing thier way into the entrance.  They appeared to be the only ones at the scene as DJ slid from the corner to begin shocking at thier feet with small tasers' he'd removed from one of the collumns.  Still occupied with thier feet Raddon twirled the weapon in the air for a moment before delivering awesome electrical shocks to each of thier chest.

Shazam stood back up, dusting some invisible dust off himself.  "Well done..."  He wouldn't let that happen again.  "Drag 'em in with the other guy.  No seditives needed..."

Aldur was out of the terminal, having collected a weapon and data pad with coordinates and timings for Dar and his cell mates.  "Darius was pulling a double-shift.  He's here one day and he's already getting into trouble."  Obviously, this pilot did not know Darius...

"We need to go..."

(Doing very good guys...  Lets keep this goin.  I think your actually trying to use the fact we know more the people writing with us...)

Darius and the wookies walked out of the lift, thankful that they had survived the attack.  Darius never wanted to go down into those dark mines again, but he knew he had no other choice.

Armored guards were rushing in all direction.  This was a bad sign.  The regular stun batons were replaced by more lethal weapons.

"I better get back do my cell," said Darius in a rush.  "I will see you guys later."

The wookies looked at him and gave him a roaring farewell.

Darius turned to see extremely heavily armored guards enter the turbolift and go down to the mines.  They were going to collect the survivors.

"Hey, you!" yelled a voice from behind.  Darius turned around to see a large, tattooed man staring straight back.  He was followed by other men, with the same figure.

"Not, now, I'm busy!" Darius replied, and continued to walk toward his cell.

"I'm not finished with you!" said the man again.  Darius heard feet scuffling the dry, lifeless soil.  He turned around just in time to dodge an extended arm.  In retaliation, his boot connected with the man's shin, sprawling the large man on the ground.

"I'll finish this in the arena," said Darius.  Then, the light faded away, revealing only painful darkness.

**************************

Darius awoke in the familiar bed of the medical center.  The droid came to greet him, "I hope you'll not be in here every night.  It's not healthy for a human of you size and age to be in here every night."

The former Imperial pilot sat up to see that his assailants were all lying in the beds.  It pays to be friends with wookies.  Darius caught sight of a medical droid performing surgery on an arm.  "What happened to him?" he asked the droid, and nodded to the man.

"It appears, that a wookie tore his arm clean off.  That's quite the mess to heal.  I hope he recovers."

"What's with the high security?"

"Well, there seems to be intruders.  They can't find them, but they're cornered in the southwest end of the facility.  It won't be long till their captured."

Darius rubbed his hair and ran his hand along the newly acquired stitches.  Wonderful, another battle scar, another story.

"Oh sir, that reminds me," continued the droid.  "When going over an analysis, I noticed some peculiar brain activity.  Have you ever had brain surgery, or a disfunction of some sort?"

"Mind wipe."

"That's dreadful.  It was obviously poorly done.  There is a facility on this planet that performs those on roudy, unbehaved inmates.  They're usually much cleaner than that."

"Tell that to the judge."  Darius glanced at the scan and noticed a blotch of activity in one spot of his brain.  He muttered to himself, "talk about fare trial, didn't even get to defend myself with proper evidence."

The small band of imperial pilots was probably way out of thier league, and this they knew, but they felt that the false sense of security they got from stealing from a supply depot would suffice.  That is for thier own doubts.  When men felt they could not possibly do something, something new was born.  A sense that maybe they had nothing left to lose.

Kessel was often looked at as the end of the road, and it probably was for the majority of its prisoners.  Shazam did not see it in this way though, because one of his dream lifestyles was to run a city.  This was a city.  Bustling with opportunity...

Everyone had been sent back to thier cells and the guards had gone off and quarentined the entire area around the intruders last known position.  In reality, Shazam's group was far from its original destination, they wern't one to follow the protocol of average theives.  Or weren't they?

Either way, they were very close to an oncoming line of guards, which Shazam thought to be a bit primitive for catching people, but it would be to thier advantage.  This 'area' was cut off by none other than armed guards, slowly closing the area, investigating even the darkest corners of any shed they came upon.  The camps were full of abandoned housing and obsolete tools, not to mention a couple of graveyards for mass burials.

Shazam looked out beyond the line of oncoming guards, his group was stationed in a clump of small sheds.  They would have no problem finding them here.  He most certainly didn't want to be taken prisoner again...

"Freeze..." a calm voice from behind the pilots whispered into the dirty air.  The four eyes removed themselves from the corners of thier hide out to look into the face of another species which could not be immedietly identified.

"Your the ones they're looking for..." a maroon, freckled looking version of a man knew this to be true.

The group stayed quiet, absolutly stunned.  Shouldn't they have heard this?  Shazam was oddly transfixed on the eyes of the creature, an awesome blue that made him just outright distracted.  Aldur seemed to be pondering while Raddon was even more inquisitive, glancing down to a hole in the ground.

"I am Versanz.  You may trust me...  Follow me..."  He guestured to the hole in the ground.  Some kind of intricate tunneling, thought Shazam, bringing himself to remove his eyes from that of the charismatic creature before him.  Old mines probably, the spiders must have relocated.

The others were becoming very tense as the line of prison personelle neared and thier leader came to a decision.  Really it was a question of what they could live with.  He rubbed the back of his head, still well encamped beneath the shadows, but even he was becoming a little bustled as he could hear the loud breathing of anxious guardsmen.

This was the only way.  He knew was against his better judgment to trust a prisoner, but it seemed to be his only judment at the moment.  He nodded to the others who immedietly proceeded down the black hole without a second's hesitation.  They were mighty trusting...

He was uncomfortable with his alternate, but he'd prefer to stay out of the hands of the guards, at least this way, maybe they could keep moving at least.  Always go to the opportunity with more opportunities...

(I got this alien, but if you wanna exhibit how well you trust him, go for it...)

Jack piloted the ship through the magnetic barrier and quickly steered it towards the correct vector.  When they were ready, Art entered in the coordinates and the ship launched forward into hyperspace.  Art sighed and took off his stormtrooper helmet, setting it down on the instrument panel in front of him.

"These are almost as uncomfortable as the pilot's helmets."  He muttered to himself as he pulled out both of his weapons.  Art had taken the standard E-11 carbine that was issued to all stormtroopers but he couldn't help taking his trusty pistol as well.  It had saved him on numerous occasions and his accuracy with it was perfect.  It could classify as an extra limb.

Pulling out the cleaning kit he had brought with him, Art began to strip down the E-11 and clean it thoroughly.

"You're cleaning it again?"  Jack asked, looking over at Art.  Art had already cleaned the weapon once while waiting for the rest of the team to assemble.

"It is relaxing."  Art replied, his arms moving quickly and forcefully, as if he was angry at the weapon.  Jack shook his head and looked back out into space.  Art finished with the E-11 a few minutes later, wiping each piece carefully with a cloth before slamming the pieces back together.  He then repeated the process with his pistol.  That tasked completed, he put his feet up on the panel in front of him and began to go over the facility plans that he had downloaded onto his datapad.

"Don't you ever relax?"  Jack asked, looking at Art curiously.  Art, completely absorbed in what he was doing, didn't respond.

"Ensure you tell everyone to be sure to observe the insignia on the armour of any trooper before they shoot at them."  Art said a moment later out of the blue, not looking up from his datapad.  "We don't want people being trigger happy and accidentally stunning our own."  He continued, his voice low and almost a monotone.  Jack nodded and made his way into the back to tell the rest of the team.  Art leaned back in his seat and continued to study the plans, trying to block all other forces and emotions from his mind.  Taylsha... he thought to himself, if I confront my past, I will lose my mind.  Only by denying will I be able to survive.  He thought painfully.  Trying to block out his emotions, he went back to studying the plans, using the opportunity to buy him a few moments of relative calm.

Darius made sure his breath mask was working properly and walked into the near toxic atmosphere of Kessel.  Fortunate for him, his cell block was located right across from the entrance.  Darius thought to himself -this is quite convenient, considering I've been in here half the time I've been on this planet.  This experience has almost brought me some joy-.

He entered his cell block and turned to enter his cell and found three guards in it.  The talkitive one stood up, "for that, you get the arena."

"And whom or what will I be fighting?"

"You and your wookie friend, against the rest of the gang you assaulted."

"Do you have cameras in this place or something, because if you were there, you would have noticed that they attacked me first."

This got Darius pinnned against the wall by the other two guards.

The guards that harassed him were large men.  They wore navy blue jump suits and a matching hat, with padded armor underneath the jump suit.  They were the enforcers of the local cell blocks.  When they ran into trouble, you knew that help wasn't far behind.  The help usually came with an extra leather jerkin and riot helmets, over the jump suits, and better riots control weaponry.  Usually anything containing the word stun or neuronic.  If more trouble were to arouse, heavily armored men rushed in, carrying lethal weapons, and even heavier riot control equipment.  Usually gas bombs, and bone shattering projectile launchers.

The tough men began to show their strength.  The one to Darius' right spoke into his ear.  "You think your tough boy.  We'll show you tough, you little shit."

The man that had first spoke, punched Darius in the ribs, putting his full weight into it.  He withdrew it rapidly, flailing it in the air rapidly.

"I guess I better get going to that arena then," Darius said.  His little emotion he ever showed was no where to be found now.

The two men released him and shoved him out of the cell.  One of them spoke, "I'm going to enjoy watching you be beaten senseless."  He smiled and Darius simply, and rapidly punched him in the face.  His mask broked and the man started gagging.

One of the remaning guards rushed to find him another mask and the other lunged at Darius.  The former pilot found his foot in the man's throat, and blowing set the guard on his knees, gasping for air with a working breath mask.  Darius' other foot found the man's solar plexus, sprawling the guard on the dusty floor.

The whole time, Darius wore a face, that if looks could kill, everyone in the room would have died in an instant.  He wore no other look but disdain and almost saddness when he was fighting.

Darius turned around, and began to prepare himself for the fight in the arena.

How long they'd been traveling, Shazam did not know.  Mostly, he tried to keep himself aware despite the dark and seemingly endless caverns below the bustling slave world above.  This is involved a constant 360 degree search routine with his blue light stick given to him by their new guide.  He ignored the comforting thought of abandoned cave dwellings with an almost stubbord attitude.  This 'way' did not involve the 'just in case' ideology though.  This was simply him worrying, for himself and those around him.  The others did not contest this though, for they also kept thier eyes darting about the best they could.

So far, Shazam was the only who had spoken to the stranger walking them through the tunnels with a deliberate look of complete relaxation.  He was not afraid and he wanted the others to know.

"Who are you?" The leader of the pilots queried, an essential was the best way to start the questionair off.  To this, the alien replied-

"As I said, I am Versanz.  You may put your trust in me..." he pointed to the steep enbankment ahead than gave a first hand example of how to ride the lanscape like a pro.  DJ did the same immedietly after, acting as counselor to the new recruits while his SC stayed to the end, watching for stragglers.  Omulis had no problem, but Aldur was a bit hesitant and Raddon wouldn't have chosen the stunt if he had the choice.  Shazam followed suit and continued on.

"I realize you mentioned that, but 'who' are you...  A prisoner, or guard or what?"  At this point the room seemed to become very drafty and Shazam felt it strangley necessary to stay closer to the ground.

"I am a prisoner...  You may put your trust in me."  Versanz motioned for yet another obsticale course of slide hills and pot-holes.  The head pilot shook his head and then decided he'd forget about the essentials and go for the necessary.

"Where is it you have decided to take us?"  He tripped over a large clump of something and was suddenly flung forward with only his front to break whatever fall would come.  As he fell, his question lingered while he wondered if any long, sharp rock growths were about to meet his face.  Instead, he felt a softer rock...  This did not hurt, but a good thud could be heard, and it was indeed a flatter surface than the pointy doom he'd been inticipating.

Finally one of his fellow pilots spoke up...  "You alright man?"  It was Aldur who had decided to move himself to the back of the group, hoping to see any upcoming dangers from a safe distance.  He, however, had just done the exact opposite by assuming the rear held greater fortification.

"What is this?"  Shazam wondered aloud, getting first to one knee then used the other to rise as his comrades broke away from thier path to investigate the problem.

"Glitterstim..." Raddon looked down with narrowed eyes into the dried concoction.  "And its fresh..."  The squadron members all looked into eachothers tired eyes with a new feeling...  Was it fear?  They weren't sure, but whatever it was, it was given catalyst by the realization thier guide had vanished...

(There, have some fun now, create some situations if you will.  Dar is doin a real good job with that, and I see Art is bringin out his character.  Everyone feel free to express eachothers persona's as well as your own.  Keep at it, and we'll know all that talk amounted to something.  Les go...)

Art collapsed back down in the chair.  He was sweating heavily and his body was trembling.  "I did something horrible..."  He said slowly, his voice soft and shaking.

"What, what happened?"  Taylsha asked, pushing to bring Art's memories out into the open.

"I...I don't know.  I don't remember..."  Art replied, his hands clutched tightly together.

"Try to remember, tell me what you do remember."  Taylsha said, kneeling down in front of him and taking his two hands in hers.

"Dammit I don't know!"  he shouted, his eyes turning angry and muscles tightening.  Taylsha stared into his eyes, unyielding in the face of his anger.

"Corran...I think you need to check yourself into the medb-"

"No!"  He shouted, his voice full of anger and venom as he threw Taylsha's hands off of his.

"If you ever want to live a normal life and avoid a breakdown you need help."  She said cool and calmly.  "I don't want to lose you and you are breaking down.  Emotionally you've already begun to meltdown."  She said, looking directly into his eyes and seeing a mixture of anger and sadness.  "Do it for me."  She said softly.  He looked back at her for a moment, she could his anger was disappearing.

"I...I can't."  He said, his voice breaking as he did.

"Corran, I'm sorry..."  Taylsha said, standing up.  "I'm sorry to do this to you but if I  don't I could well lose you."  She continued, pulling out her blaster.  Art lept up from the chair but she fired a stun  burst at him, his body dropping to the floor like a rock.  She looked down at him, his eyes were open and his mouth was trying to move.  "I'm sorry."

"Art?"

Art woke up with a start as Jack called his name.

"Are you alright?"  Jack asked him as he sat down.  Art's face was covered in sweat and his stormtrooper armour was out of place from his tossing and turning.

"Yes..."  he said softly.  "Just taking a nap."  He replied.

"Are you sure?"  Jack asked worriedly.

"I said yes dammit!"  Art exclaimed angrily.  He turned and stared out of the cockpit, his breathing heavy as he tried to recover himself.  Maybe I need help...  He thought to himself.

"The way of war is a way of deception. When able, feign inability; when deploying troops, appear not to be. When near, appear far; when far, appear near. Lure with bait; strike with chaos. If the enemy is full, be prepared. If strong, avoid him. If he is angry, disconcert him. If he is weak, stir him to pride. If he is relaxed, harry him; if his men are harmonious, split them. Attack where he is unprepared; appear where you are unexpected. This is victory in warfare; it cannot be divulged in advance. Victory belongs to the side that scores most in the temple calculations before battle. Most spells victory; least spells defeat; none, surer defeat. I see it in this way, and the outcome is apparent." -- Sun Tzu

Jack was uncertain about Art at the moment, but he decided it was best to leave him alone. Jack was busy not just piloting, but reflecting back on past memories.

He could still see her face the day she departed. He promised her that he'd be at the station before the shuttle left. He had rushed to get there, but as he made it, a droid stopped him.

"I'm sorry, sir, but the shuttle you seek passage onto is already departing," the droid had said in a normal mechanized voice.

"I don't care!" Jack had protested to the droid with a metal hand stopping him. "I promised someone I'd be aboard!"

"Sir, don't make me take this up with the authorities. You cannot go aboard that shuttle," the droid had continued.

Behind the droid, the transport rose from the ground, her face staring out at Jack. She was upset and hurt, for Jack had made promises before to her that he had broken.

Not on purpose, of course.

The shuttle continued to rose and speed out of sight. Jack sighed unhappily out, not to the droid or her, but more to himself. He had failed. He gathered up everything he brought and headed home.

It was by the time he had gotten home was when he first heard the aweful news.

As he walked in the door, his family didn't even realize that he was there and that he missed the transport. They had their ears glued to the family comlink.

"A shuttle that departed today from Nova City crashed earlier today in the rocky Aur'or Mountains," a reporter said. Jack tried to listen as well as he got the number of the transport.

Her transport, Jack thought to himself. It was then when he heard the worst part.

"All aboard were killed."

Jack got out of the trance and found himself back in the pilot's chair of the shuttle they were using. He was out of his stormtrooper armor and dressed in a pilot's uniform. That day was haunting. He had lost his first actually girlfriend that day.

To a rogue pirate group that was now being held in a secure location on a planet.

The same planet that they were heading for to rescue Darius.

Kessel.

"Revenge," Jack whispered to himself. "Revenge."

(Alright then...  That's really good Jack.  Art, showin showin some stuff as well, I think you guys are starting to do what I'm telling ya...  Those characters are becoming exposed a little more, or atleast their past seems better known.  Keep it up...)

DJ slapped his forehead as Aldur suddenly shouted out," VERSANZ?" Raddon lifted his hand to the loud mouth and gave him a radio-active stare.  Shazam seemed to be collecting thoughts as Omulis watched carefully.

"What're you thinkin boss?" the recruit wondered enthusiastically.  Shazam was very warm and the sweat felt very strange against his skin in the cool cavern, his clothes sticking reguardless of the temperature.  The SC transitioned out of his trance into a gitty reluctant stride that moved them in the direction that he was pretty sure they were being led earlier on.

"Apparently, those spiders are around...  Or atleast one..." DJ mentioned as Shazam passed him, the three recruits positioning themselves in a line with the flight leader now falling in behind them.

"We went from vacation to this?" Shazam chuckled.  "I certainly hope we can actually get out of these caverns..."

"Do we have any equipment that might help out atleast?" Omulis seemed optomistic.

"Uh...  Well, I suppose my data pad could help, assuming we know where we are underneath the soil of the map I downloaded." Aldur pulled out the 4'x6' tool.

Shazam stopped his nervous walk and figured he'd coordinate an effort atleast.  This is what he did, fixed the problems when they presented themselves in the most apparent way.

"I figure we've traveled..." Shazam snatched the pad away," about this much..." He measured almost half an inch from the dot representing the building with the never ending hole next to it.  Aldur had found the point very quickly...

"Think there's another one of those death traps around here?" Omulis could only imagine if they had not been able to seen the steps carved into the side of the wall on the way down.  Big ol' splat...

"Well, I suppose if we can figure out exactly why that hole was there, then maybe..."  Shazam began when Raddon interupted-

"It was a service hole, this must be one of the earlier caves.  Maybe that's why the spiders are reappearing as well..."

"You think that they think the danger is gone, so they're moving back in?" Aldur had a smirk on his face.  That seemed a little clever for an insect.

"Well, yea...  They must have abondoned the place to for whatever reason, but whatever that is, maybe..." Omulis tried to help him understand.

"Eggs..." Shazam understood.

"What?" Aldur didn't get it.  No one did just yet.

"That alien who brought us down here wasn't trying to help us.."  Shazam continued.  "But he wasn't an alien...  Those dots and dark spots were from the spiders.  He must have befreinded them.  A force user I bet.  Using these little outlets to tease people into escape but feed them to certain death...  Pulling disappearing acts and forcing them to continue farther into the caverns.  I bet its just about hatching time and that's why he avoids leading the prey to the hunter..."

"So what exactly was he intending to do?"  Aldur required the picture.

"Well, I think that the spiders inhabit this cave beyond what we know, but they travel across a route along here to get to the main caves, where they let off that glitter stim crap...  This is just nesting ground..." Shazam turned to him, a shadow across the upper half of his face.  "Versanz was going to feed us to his friends...  And now we need to turn back.  And we need to hurry..."  There was a rustling sound as he ended his sentance.  "Lets move."

(Your all doin well, lets get into this now...)

(This story is starting to look more like a novel-type every post.  Keep it up people.)

Darius walked into the prisoner entrance to the arena and was immediately directed to the armory to suit up.  As he entered the room, he found his wookie friend testing out a massive club.  Darius approached him, "bring that along, but when it comes to fighting, that might get you killed."

The room was filled and cluttered with antique weapons.  To todays standards of warfare, these weapons were as old as old could get.  They were long retired from war.  The room itself was unkept.  One light lit the whole room, and it was coated in an even layer of dirt, like the rest of the room.

The wookie acknowledged his comment and rested the giant club on his shoulder.  He rumaged some more for and found a short sword.  Darius nodded his approval, and moved to find himself suitable, gladiator-type weapons.

Darius quickly found his fighting tool.  Though outdated by a couple millenia, these crude tool had found their purpose in the arena.  Darius found an old stormtroopers chestplate that fit him quite well.  He managed to find a hardened leather jerkin and chaps to serve as secondary armor.  Next, he located some old hoverboard pads, and put them to use once again.

Darius chose to use small, light weapons.  Brass knuckles on both hands, small daggers concealed under his armor and in his boot in protective sheaths, and dual broad swords.

While suiting up, guards watched and approved of their weapons.  This had proved to be a battle to the death.  Darius was determined to live through this.  The prison hadn't quite gotten to him yet.  He still carried his wit about.

Darius walked over to his wookie friend, it wasn't the leader, so he didn't know the name.  The wookie turned around and showed his battle apparel.  He had braided the fur around his chin and face.  He had taken an old shirt, and shredded it.  He wore it, but it couldn't be recognized as a shirt, but a warriors mark of recognition.  It looked of those that Darius had seen on Kashyyyk.

The man put his hand on the wookies shoulder and spoke, "it will be an honor to fight with you."

The wookie grumbled and roared.

"Jolanc, we will survive.  I promise you."

The wookie continued to grumble and roar.

"With those words, we will lose."

The wookie just knodded and walked to the door.  The guard stepped aside hurridly, not wishing to tempt the armed wookie to lash out.  Darius followed the beast and they stopped on the powerlift.  They would rise into the cheering stadium, to be greeted by a roaring crowd from around the galaxy, to see sentient being kill each other, or be killed.

The rusty lift slowly started to raise.  The massive doors above slowly creaked open, revealing light in dark places.  Darius head rose above the arena floor to stair at twenty-five bulky, better equipped men.  This was not going to be easy.

(Yeah...I guess Jen could be considered a flirt.)

Jen leaned back against her seat, eyes tracing the deep lines that etched the ceiling's metal covering. Closing her eyes, she clutched on to her helmet and sighed. Her mind was racing. Jen, you're being silly. You're already here...settle down!! But, we're going behind his back...Should we really do it if he disapproved so much?

Corwin poked his head around from the cockpit and saw Jen sitting alone. Slipping off his helmet, he crept upon her, armor clicking, metal upon metal, and sat down beside the distressed girl. Her face was tense and she was mumbling to herself. ""Hey, Jen are you alright?"" He put his right hand over hers and set his helmet on the floor.

Jen's eyes flared open as she jerked towards the person next to her. Immediately, her shoulders relaxed and fell back against the chair. She took a deep breath, it was only Corwin. ""Uh, yeah, I'm ok. I was just thinking..."" She brushed his hand off hers and ran her hands through her long damp hair. The armor was starting to feel like an oven. Jen laughed nervously. " I don't know how they survive in these things."

"Stormtrooper armor isn't very comfortable to be in for long periods of time." They sat in silence as Corwin's eyes darted around the room until they found their way back to Jen. ""So, whatcha thinking about?"" He raised an eyebrow and rested his elbow on his thigh.

"Actually, I'm starting to feel bad about going behind Shazam's back...." Jen sighed and let her shoulders roll forward.

"What? You?! Jen, you were the most excited out of all of us to go rescue this guy."

"I know! It doesn't really make sense does it?" Jen brought her legs close to her body and rested her forehead on her knees in dispare.

"Not exactly. No." Corwin grinned and put his arm around her. "Relax, Jen. I'm sure Shazam wishes he could do the same thing we are, but he's got his job to do, you know? He's suppose to say that we can't go out here and rescue Darius. If he could he would be right here with us."

"I guess that makes sense." Jen pushed herself up from her seat and tapped her helmet against her side, listening to the light ting of the armor. "Thanks, I feel better about it now."

"Yep, anytime."

Jen turned on her heel and walked into the cockpit to find the XO of Nazgul. Why did I lie so outwardly to him?! I gotta stop doing that to people, they're only trying to help me.  "Hey, Jack." She smiled and squatted down next to his chair. "How long till we reach Kessel?"

"I'd say we have atleast a few more hours." His sea-green eyes kept focus on the control panel.

"Oh, alright." She bounced back up and placed her hand on Jack's chair, looking out into the conflicting light and darkness of space. "Here we come Dar."
