  Kazack: Ship Captain Training Program

Garen Oldecka was extremely pleased with his latest test results, His academy training was going incredibly well, and he was due to be released to active service soon. He was in training as a Communications Officer following his previous assignment as a Gunner onboard a smugglers ship. He had enlisted in the Vast Empire Navy and began training in one of the areas they had needed most, Communications. He had been briefed that communications was one of the most important stations aboard a ship. He had scored extremely well on all his tests and was assigned to the academy vessel ‘Mc-Elroy’ While he prepared for his exams. The entire crew would be preparing for their own exams as well in the hope they would be assigned to active duty soon. Many of them were chomping at the bit, eager for some action. Garen however didn’t have that problem, he was a paitent man. Suddenly an emergency tone signalled on the comm next to him. “Mr. Oldecka, We have the Mc-Elroy’s new CO coming aboard in a few moments.” The Executive Officer’s voice sounded cool and calm, “Please go outside and make sure he get’s onboard alright.” She continued. “Yes Ma’am!” Said Garen and quickly turned on his heel, terminating the comm. as he did so. “The Captain huh? Alright let’s see if I can’t make a good impression.” He muttered to himself as his boots clanked along the metal floor.

Petty Officer 1st Class Fremen ‘Kazack’ Talla was pleased to be going into the Ship Captain’s Training Program. He was, in his own opinion, quite an effective speaker and could use his powers of oratory to uplift and inspire the crew. He gritted his teeth as a crewman walked past, boots clanking on the deck. “I hate how they do that.” He muttered to himself. The crewman suddenly swivelled around and looked questioningly at Kazack. “Sir?” The man asked uncertainly, not sure whether he was being reprimanded or not. Kazack waved his hand in a dismissive gesture at the crewman, but he didn’t disappear and leave him alone. “Sir my apologies, Are you the Mc-Elroy’s new Captain?” The man asked hesitantly. “Ye-es” Kazack said hesitantly, wondering where this conversation was heading. “Forgive me sir, I am Garen Oldecka, I am the Communications Officer on board the Mc-Elroy. Your Executive Officer sent me down to make sure you got on board alright.” Garen continued saluting. “Thank you Mr Oldecka,” Kazack replied as he returned the salute. “I am Petty Officer Talla, and I will be your Commanding Officer while you are stationed aboard the Mc-Elroy. Good Performance will be rewarded with promotion or commendation if you’re lucky. Bad Performance, depending on the severity, will be punished accordingly” Kazack said. “Yes sir, said Garen, “Would you like to come aboard sir” Garen asked. “Of course Mr Oldecka,” Kazack said as he walked on past the Comms Officer. “Yes sir,” Garen muttered as he walked on after Kazack.

Maybe I went a bit overboard with the bad performance part. Kazack thought as he heard Garen muttering behind him. Oh well, he’ll get over it, he carries himself well, and is well-spoken. The only thing is that damn CLANKING. He thought. The thought melted away as he saw the Mc-Elroy. He may have only been in training. But Kazack knew training was just the time to make a good impression on subordinates and especially superiors. “My ship,” He murmured. “My Crew.”

Garen quickly stopped as the Captain did and he began murmuring to himself. Oh great, he talks to himself too, thought Garen sarcastically. The thought was immediately eclipsed by a sense of shame. He’s my superior, he thought, sure he’s young, but that doesn’t mean I can say whatever I want about him.

(OOC: My Section 1 of the Ship Captain Training Program, 630 words not counting the OOC comments. I will post my entire Training program here to save space on the comnet.)

As Garen Oldecka entered the bridge, the new Captain of the Mc-Elroy at his side. He self-consciously realised that everyone was looking at him as well as the captain. He realised that his withered arm was showing. Quickly he pulled his arm back beneath his uniform. If the captain had noticed the arm, he didn’t show it. “Executive Officer, please name yourself.” Kazack called across the bridge. A young and fairly pretty human female raised her hand. “Here sir, Petty Officer 2nd Class Mary Victoire at your service sir” She bobbed a curtsey in his direction. Hmm, Highly irregular for an XO, Kazack thought. We’ll have to work on that.  “Thank you Ms Victoire, Please refer to me as Captain Talla until such time as we get proper introductions sorted out. Mr Oldecka, please return to your station” Kazack said. “Yes Sir” said Garen as he snapped his heels and returned to the comms station. “Everyone can return to their stations as well” Kazack replied with a meaningful glance at the rest of the Bridge Crew. The crew quickly hung their heads and pulled their eyes back towards the consoles on the bridge. Kazack was quietly satisfied with himself. “Forgive me Sir, we haven’t been properly introduced.” Mary said. “Ah yes, Forgive me, Petty Officer 1st Class Fremen Talla at your service” Kazack replied. “If I may ask sir, what did you do before you took this position?”  Mary asked. “I was originally trained as a fighter pilot in Regent’s Squadron, since then I have served on the Iron Duke and the Fearless, as a bridge officer.” He replied. “Ah” Said the XO, an awkward silence fell between them. “Well if their is nothing else Ms Victoire, I shall have to get settled into my quarters.” Kazack said. “Of course sir. “ Mary replied saluting.

After setting up his quarters Kazack lay back on his bunk and stared up at the ceiling. “That went well” he thought to himself. What are you doing lolling around here, his head told him, get up to the bridge and get a feel for the ship. Before he could act on the impulse however, the comm. sounded. “Yes?” Kazack asked.

As the crew of the Mc-Elroy quickly assembled in the briefing room, wondering what an earth it was about, Kazack quickly took the mike. “Thank you everyone, for those of you who don’t know I am you’re new commanding officer” Kazack began “Unfortunately we’ve had a change of assignment that command seems to be screwing with us” “We are being transferred to the LC Honor”
“Now I know this will be a big inconvenience for most of you, but remember, Every defeat masks an opportunity” We’re all probably going to have tough times handed to us in the following weeks and months so we need to be prepared.”
“You have 48 hours to prepare and pack before we board our new ships”
“Good luck everyone, I look forward to serving with you”

As the crew filed out of the room. Kazack’s head swam slightly and his knees almost buckled. “No” he said to himself, “It’s a minor setback, I can overrule it” He thought. He pondered his thoughts that night as he lay in the bunk. He hadn’t even taken off his uniform, he was so exhausted. Soon they would be aboard the Honor.

Petty Officer 1st class Fremen ‘Kazack’ Talla, Commanding Officer of the LC Honor stood on the bridge of his vessel, observing incoming transmissions near the Abrae repair yards. Typical, my first duty is guarding the repair yards he thought, well I guess someone has to do it. Kazack was about to issue his orders and speak  to his helmsman when he realised he had forgotten his name. Dale that was it, Dale Kimantha a young Twi’lek male who’s file stated that he showed extraordinary promise, he had originally began training as a star fighter pilot but was then  transferred to Capital Ship duty after he showed his affinity with larger ships. His only issue was inexperience. Then again that was Kazack’s issue too. He had never been in command of a warship, even though he had led part of the bridge crew of the Fearless during their mission to destroy a group of pirates in the Coveway system. Here was his chance to shine “Mr Kimantha, let’s do another sweep of the area and then we should be relieved. Mr Oldecka please continues monitoring communications, if you pick up anything unusual I want to know”
“Yes sir,”The two men said simultaneously.
Mr Oldecka is certainly capable, Kazack thought and Mr Kimantha is certainly very good to have as a helmsman, it seems strange to my mind, but the only person that I don’t know much about in terms of abilities is my XO. Kazack snapped himself out of his mental reverie as the deck began to move beneath his feet. He quickly relaxed as he realised that it was only the natural manoeuvre of the ship as it moved for another sweep of the area. Kazack gazed out the bridge viewports and looked around as repair cranes and dry-dock workers swarmed over damaged ships. There seems to be alot of those since the attack on the Capp Kazack thought. He sighed inwardly as he realised that the majority of the leads from intelligence on who may have been behind the attack had gone cold. It seemed like years, not months, since the attack on the station, so much had happened in the intervening time “Sir, the Defiance is here to relieve us.” Kazack’s sensor officer reported. Kazack finally remembered the woman’s name. Toni Hart was a loyal and dependable, if not entirely brilliant, Sensor Officer. Her record showed she was very capable but again, she lacked experience. I guess all of us, me included, will have to learn as we go thought Kazack as they returned to their post guarding the Capp. “Alright everyone, get some sleep, Graveyard watch will relieve us and we can all get some well deserved R&R, well done people” Kazack said. The sleep deprived Primary Watch crew murmured their thanks to their captain as they filed out of the Bridge. Mary Victorie lay a hand on his shoulder and hesitated as she was about to leave. “Will you be needing anything sir?” She asked.
“No thank you Mary, I will be getting some sleep myself when Graveyard Watch gets here, you need some sleep too.”“Thank you sir” Mary replied and left.

Garen Oldecka almost laughed at the irony of the thought of getting some sleep. I’ve been trying to get some sleep for about three years now and never have. Since Mimban, he had been on his own. He knew that he would probably never find love again. But as he thought of her, the memory of her softness, her smiles, he experienced a deep sadness. He quickly turned his head so that the rest of the crew couldn’t see the tears in his eyes. Suddenly, he couldn’t take it anymore, breaking into a run, he reached his quarters, locked and bolted the door, and sat down on his bunk. He cried for a long time, he hugged himself, pretending that she was in his arms, just like she used to be. Oh my love, please return to me he howled inwardly even as the tears streamed down his face. I can’t go on anymore, I can’t! he had never endured pain such as this, this pain was not a stabbing lacerating pain as some people said they had experienced in battle. No, this was worse, this was a pain as if he had been split clean in two. His eyes burning, Garen Oldecka raged to himself inwardly. Lucka I swear, I will kill you, you’ve taken everything from me. Across the lightyears of space, he hoped the smuggler heard him, His time would come, just like everyone else. And when it did, Garen Oldecka would look into his eyes with a cold smile. And just... walk away.

Mary Victoire was somewhat ambivalent about her new captain. She had served under two captains previously. But being chosen to be in the running for an Executive Officer position was just awe-inspiring. I will live up to it. She thought. Mary also knew that, unless she displayed proficiency, she would not be considered, the entire crew would soon be up for examination, even the Captain had seemed on edge. Then again, that may be the way he usually is Mary thought. Without even removing her uniform, she slumped onto the bunk and soon lost her thoughts as her subconscious mind took over and she finally began to sleep.
