They are not necessarily special weapons so much as weapons that have a specific purpose that people might not normally carry in an average trooper's setting. People bring and write about these special weapons because they are interesting to them.  Razor (my character) specializes in close combat and explosives so he carries weapons a normal trooper wouldn't have.  I enjoy writing about those weapons which is why I am a HWS and also why I write about melee training/combat in some part of virtually every post.

You mean easier to extend by a hundred or so words, sure. The only truly hard part about writing a story is coming up with a solid plot that can hook your reader.

Fair enough Jager.  You make some good points but my disc throwers were specifically designed for assassination stories because they are silent and accurate killers.  I used them along with other members of the VEA in the story series Silent Action.

The boy will learn, cut him some slack you bad-ass veterans :P

Anyways, actual contribution I hope makes sense:

"Special Equipment" is not something I see as defining a character, I find it far more creative and effective to instead use "signature styles" in many cases.

Let's take Riqimo for an example of style over equipment, he's an oddball of sorts, a former pacifist who believes it's necessary to fight and kill at times, but only after all other options have been exhausted.  As such, he tends to carry a sai-like weapon, aiming to disarm his opponents with it.

Kairo (whom unfortunately many of you "newbies" do not actually know) was another who focused on how he used the weapons to make his character stand out, he was a master knife thrower, even using them to "inspire" his platoon to follow his orders time to time.

Equipment can be lost, stolen, or plain broken.  A style is with you pretty much forever, and can even be done with improvised materials if necessary; ie. Riq could improvise a pitchfork if he had to.

And to avoid accusations, I'm not arguing for or against special equipment.  Riqimo actually has some plans of his own (on the DJO side of things) for a "special" of sorts.  Just remember that if you do go this route, plan it out carefully, else you might find yourself writing into a dead end where you have to have that particular item or else your writing/character suffers for it.

Its kinda cool, i recently found all my old TMNT toys and gave them to our daughter, she still likes my husbands extensive lego collection more bah.
