First off I would like to say that if you are using java chat I would strongly recommend switching to mIRC or some other IRC based chat program. Secondly commands used here are not guaranteed to work with any other IRC program. Thirdly you can download mIRC
hereI would also like to add that mIRC does expire, but fear not you will not have to fork up the dollars to register it. When waiting for the continue button the continue button may change to an exit button and force you to close the program. No worries, just re-open the program and keep trying until it stays as the continue button took me something like 6 tries and hasn't bothered me since.
Registering NicknameRegistering a nick is very important especially if you intend to rise up through the ranks. Have you ever met a SL who was not the owner of his channel? (if you did, you shouldn't) In order to be the owner of the channel or even to gain permanent operator (ops) status your nick must be registered.
The command is; /nickserv register
password emailThe password and email you will need to provide, I would suggest remembering the password.
IdentifyingEverytime you log into mIRC you will need to identify yourself.
The command to do this is; /nickserv identify
passwordPassword being the password that you chose when registering your nick.
I have set my identifying so that it automatically identifies me as soon as I join, as well as binded it to /id
In order to do this follow these simple steps;
Under tools click on scripts editor...
under the aliases tab type the below;
/id /nickserv identify password
press ok
from now every time you type /id you will be identified. To take it a step further and be recognized as soon as you connect do the following;
Under tools select options
Under connect click on option
Select perform...
Make sure enable on connect has a tick
Type /id in the big box
pres ok
Now every time you log on it should automatically identify you.
LoggingLogging is a useful tool as it keeps track of all the conversations you've ever had. In case you want to remember what someone said and whatnot.
In order to enable logging follow these simple steps;
Under tools select options
Under irc select logging
Under automatically log select both
Make sure Timestamp Logs has a tick
press ok
You can change where the logs are saved if you want to but thats entirely up to you. In order to access the logs it is under tools, log files...
Registering ChannelRegistering channels is typically used for offices and whatnot or gaming rooms.
The command is; /chanserv register
channel password descriptionWhen supplying the channel name you will need to include the # before the channel, once again remember the password and the description is up to you.
Transferring OwnershipIn a created channel the owner is always recognizable with the ~ sign next to his name. In order to change the ownership follow the below command.
The command is; /chanserv set
channel founder
nickChannel being the channel you want to transfer ownership and nick being the registered nick that you want to transfer it to.
OpingThere are many different Operator statuses SOP < AOP < HOP < VOP I can't tell you what half of them mean but I can tell you that VOP is just giving someone voice which is only useful in meeting scenarios. In order to give someone Ops just follow the below command.
The command is; /chanserv sop
channel add
nickOnce again channel being the channel with the # and nick being the persons nick. You can change sop to aop, hop, vop. Channel is once again the channel complete with the # sign. you can change add to del if you want to remove someone's ops status. nick is once again the registered nick that the person is using.
I hope this is helpful if there's anything else worth putting up on here let me know.
