0500 hours, Downtime before Squadron Missions
Orbital Platform  Epsilon – Abrae, Vectra System

Saul sat on his bunk, awaiting word of the next mission. He was ready, still a little green but ready. In the meantime he would clean his blaster pistols. He rarely got a change to use his DT-57 pistols anymore, as they were not a Naval issued item it could not be carried onto a fighter, but it calmed him to clean them.  He then heard his wrist communicator chime; it was sitting in his foot locker. Saul jumped from his bunk, and pulled out it. There was no ID on the call, so it had to be a call from within the Vast Empire Imperial Navy, those calls always lacked an ID. He pressed the button to answer the call.

[[Delta Two, this is Alpha One; Meet me in Hangar Three.]]

“Aye, Sir!” he replied.

He grabbed a few items, his Sonic Screwdriver, and some other commonly carried items. Though he left his weapons behind, he thought it was doubtful he would need them. Saul walked over to the door, pressed the panel to open it and began to make his was to hangar three. All the while he wondered what exactly they would be doing.  As he walked, he looked out the viewport into space. A strange craft flew past him, towards hangar three. He could see it enter the hangar, but could not make out what kind it was.
He approached the door to the hangar, and saw a man exit from the door. It closed behind him, and he walked off down the hall, and into another corridor. Saul walked up to the door, and pressed the button on the panel; nothing happened. The door panel button was red, it was locked. He debated to himself whether to break in or not, but instead he just knocked first. The door slid open, and his commanding officer, Hunter Morrell, stood at the opposite side of the door.

Saul saluted “Reporting as ordered, sir!”

“Come inside, we have a job to do.” Hunter said to which Saul walked inside, the door closed and locked behind him.

Looking inside the hangar, he saw a craft he never thought to see in his wildest dreams. A modified V38 Fighter – The TIE Phantom. A dual pilot stealth interceptor, with one major and rare advantage; a functional cloaking device.

“Sir, where did this come from?” Saul asked, in awe of the fighter
Hunter looked at the Phantom, “VE Naval Intelligence brought it over, as well as all that gear.” Hunter pointed to a pile of armor, weapons, and communication / surveillance equipment.

“I don’t follow, why is all this here?”

“A few hours ago, I received a call from Commander Rite of Naval Intelligence. He informed me that I was to find a second pilot and proceed to this hangar. He then went into detail about the job that we have to do.”

“Which is?” Saul questioned.

“All in good time. I will explain after we take off. Suit up into the gear, and get the Phantom loaded. We lift off in thirty.”

“Yes, Sir!” Saul said with excitement, not knowing what he was getting into.

He walked over to the gear and looked at what it was; two sets of Storm Commando armor, a case of medical treatment devices, Food rations, Com-links, Silenced slug thrower pistols, small sized vibro-blades, explosive charges, and various other items.

“What the hell did I just get myself into?” he asked himself, hoping Hunter did not hear.

“What you got yourself into, is a Eyes-Only VENI operation. If we do this well, there may be nice rewards in the end.” Hunter said, standing on the deck above him.

“And what if we fail? What if we die, what then?”

“Then as far as anyone will know, we just vanished. As far as anyone knows, until we return, we are already dead.”

“Great.” Saul said, a little more nervous now than before.

Saul slid into the commando Armor, and strapped the holster for one of the pistols on. He then slid the vibro-blade into his boot, and began to move the gear into the Phantom. There was not much to move, but as he entered the TIE, he noticed there was other gear in cased marked “Do Not Damage or Open.” He thought it would be best to leave those be.

About ten minutes later, all the gear was loaded into the Phantom. He exited it, and walked over to Hunter.

“Alright it is all loaded.” He reported.

“Good, get in and prep for departure.” Hunter replied.

“Any particular course?”

“I will let you know that once I do.”

“You don’t know?”

“VENI takes a lot of caution. The Phantom is dampened from communication interceptors and computer hacks. They will transfer the mission details once we lift off with it.”

“Alright then.” Saul said as he and Hunter headed for the Phantom.

Saul did just what he was told, he prepped the Phantom and got it ready. Hunter walked into the cockpit, sat down, and strapped himself in. He then pointed over to a console.

“Do you know what that panel does?” He asked Saul.

“Never seen anything like it, the readouts are strange.”

“You’ve never seen it before, and probably never will again. It is for the Stygium crystal cloaking device.”

Saul looked in amazement, he had heard of such thing but never knew they still existed.

“Where the hell did VENI get this thing?” Saul said with a laugh.

“The depths of hell; Who really knows? Start final launch prep, we lift off in five.” Hunter said, and sat back in his seat.

“So you’re recruiting me for . . . what exactly am I going to be doing anyway? And why did you choose me?” Hunter asked, his brow furrowing in slight confusion as he returned his attention back on the being standing in front of him.

“Every six months, every pilot in the Imperial Navy has to take a battery of tests to determine their technical aptitude, accuracy, health, etc. On the last battery of tests that you took, for the most part, you scored very high, higher than almost every other pilot in the Navy. That is why we, the VENI, have chosen you for this mission. Also, you need a partner for this mission. We have compiled a short list of acceptable pilots, but we will leave it up to you to decide who it’ll be.” the human known as Mr. J said tiredly, as if he had repeated it hundreds of times before.

Mr. J was a mid-fourties human male with an awful comb over. A so-called VENI operative, Mr. J was paunchy and seemed to be in poor health. I’m more of a VENI operative than he is. I doubt he could make it up a flight of stairs without stopping to catch his breath. Probably stays behind a desk most of the time, if not all of the time. Sighing, Hunter rubbed his eyes and yawned. It had been almost midnight when he had gotten the call to report to the VENI headquarters on Abrae, and it had taken almost an hour to get there. Though Hunter hadn’t been asleep when he was called, he was close to it and so was getting drowsy as the talks went on and on. Beneath that drowsiness was a bit of irritability at being interrupted from the project he had been working on, which put Hunter in an even worse mood.

“You didn’t answer my first question.” Hunter said curtly.

Mr. J paused before answering, “All I will tell you now is that you will be rewarded if you return. You will be transmitted the rest of the details when you are aboard your ship and on your way.”

“I don’t particularly like getting myself into something without knowing what is going on. So if you will, please enlighten me.” Hunter said, his voice growing cold as he registered the “if” .

Mr. J repeated what he had just said.

“I don’t like that answer. Try again.”

Now Hunter was getting annoyed. He always wanted to have at least some intel before going into a mission, so he’d know if he would need to carry a bit of extra equipment that wasn’t on the list of approved items.

His face completely blank and unreadable, Mr. J pointed towards the door. “I have told you what you need to know. Dismissed.”

Hunter just stared at the man before standing. He glanced down as he felt a bit of resistance on his right ankle, but then remembered the sheathed knife that was there. Mr. J followed his glance and saw the faint outline of the sheath. His eyes widening, he took a step back.

“Don’t give me any reason to drop you from this mission. You aren’t vital to it. We can find others.” he said, totally misreading Hunter’s glance.

Gritting his teeth, Hunter shook his head and backed out of the room, keeping his eyes on Mr. J’s the whole time. Only once he was out of the building did Hunter release the breath he didn’t realize he had been holding. That was . . . tense, to say the least

As he walked back to the list, he took a look at the list of approved names. Instantly, he spotted a name and made his choice. Crumpling up the paper, he threw it in his P-38 starfighter when he arrived at it. Climbing in, he started it up and lifted off. Once a good distance away from the VENI building, Hunter opened up his comm to the person he had chosen to be his partner on the mission.

“Delta Two, this is Alpha One; Meet me in Hangar Three.”

Summit replied with an enthusiastic “Aye, Sir!”

Ending the call, Hunter pushed the thrusters to the max, preparing to a bit of joyriding to calm his nerves. Grinning, he sent the craft soaring into the still dark sky.

Saul began the final launch preparation, it was time to go.

“Propulsion, Green.”  He said as he sent power to the propulsion system.

This was a strange ship, with a book of procedure that was almost as tall as he was. Saul sat in his seat going down the list on his data pad. He knew enough about star fighters that he did not think he needed to go through all of the procedure, but what could he do. Main Power, Life Support, and Structural Integrity were online; the next system to come on was Auxiliary power. Saul searched across the panels and screen for the power switch. It was over to his left, right next to Aft-Shield power.

“What a strange place to put this.” He said, “Did they even think when they wired it…”

“About what?” Hunter said.

“It just seems like things are placed completely at random, without regard for common sense.”

“Well, we will just have to make do.”

“Aye, Sir.” Saul said as he went back to the preparations.

He flipped the switch for Auxiliary Power, and moved onto the communications system. Within the next five minutes all systems were power on and ready for use. The star fighter was ready to go.

Hunter controlled the fighter, and it lifted off. Leaving the bay behind it, transmissions began to hit the ship. Only one was from someone watching the hangar and noticing the dust off but not seeing any paperwork filed for it. The rest of the transmissions were encrypted and on hidden frequencies. The fighter was sleek and smooth in space, it slid past nearby freighters and passenger ships. People likely saw it and were confused; it was unlikely though that anyone knew what kind of ship it was.

They accelerated towards a Wayfarer transport, their home away from home for this operation. It would hold the fighter during the flight to… wherever they were going, and it held a skeleton crew for logistical support. From what the low encryption transmissions said, the key to open the higher encryption was onboard the Wayfarer. It seemed that the mission would be visible once they arrived.
