"When did they arrive?!" Folders, paperwork and datapads left a scattered trail of breadcrumbs behind the aide as he tried to keep up with the Army's Tactical Officer. The newly appointed Army High Council member was almost jogging down the hallways of the Army's headquarters inside Sianat City. Damn underlings, Angel said inwardly, Can never count on them for anything. He been adamant since the squad left that he be informed before their transport even entered the atmosphere of Tadath. Yet here he was, not two weeks into his new job as both Tactical Officer and Company Commander running late to what could shape up to be the most important debriefing in the Corps' history.

As Angel rounded a corner his shoulder clipped a secretary, causing the startled woman to fling the tray of freshly filled stim-caf cups into the air. Deftly sidestepping the scorching hot rain falling in the hallway, Angel cursed at the unfortunate secretary. The aide that had been following Angel let out a sharp yelp as the burning liquid cascaded down on him. Loosing his composure of a brief moment, he shot a less than happy look at his commanding officer and replied gruffly. "They arrived less than twenty minutes ago. We ordered them immediately into debriefing." Waving his caf-stained folders down the hallway, the aide concluded, "Platoon Sergeant Fal and Senior Sergeant Luth are in briefing room three."

Without saying another word, Angel left the two assistants to clean up the mess and resumed his torrid pace through the hallways. Briefing room three was only a short distance away, and he was able to reach the outer doors in very little time. As the 1st Lieutenant approached, he noticed the door was slightly ajar and could hear angry voices coming from within. Stopping short of the entrance, Angel smoothed out his duty uniform and took the additional moment to identify Jager and Rizzit's voices.

Finally Angel reached out to his left and brushed the control panel, fully opening the door into the room. Scanning the area he found Jegora and Jager both slouched lazily in the comfortable nerf-hide seats situated around the table. Their clothes were ragged and disheveled and neither looked like they had slept or eaten in days. Both of their faces reflected their clothing, a thick layer of stubble around their jaw line. The difference between the two, however, was the dead-behind-the-eyes gaze that Jegora had. It wasn't sadness that Angel saw in him, it was the unmistakable look of a man who had stared death in the face, but avoided its icy hands.

Obviously things hadn't gone as planned.

"Emperor's black bones..."Angel said, "you guys look like something a bantha ate, crapped out, ate again, then puked up."

"Nice to see you too." Jager snapped at his former squad leader. "I was just getting to the good part."

Jegora said nothing, remaining silent and letting his overly animated assistant regurgitate the happenstance of their situation. Angel tried to lock the Sergeant's gaze, but his one time ASL appeared to just look through his commanding officer.

"So as I was saying before fancy-pants there barged in." Jager continued with his usual crass and sarcastic manner. "We met with Faith Moraal, the VE Intelligence officer on the Chimera. For a few weeks things were going just swimmingly. Everyone was split up around the ship and gathering intel from their squads..."

As Jager continued to recount the tale of Jester's stay aboard Thrawn's flagship, he took special note of Jegora's body language. The further Jager's story went the tighter the big man's fists became, his knuckles becoming supernova white. Strangely enough, though, it wasn't anger that was radiating from Jester's SL, but an impassive tension that had his body tied into a gigantic knot. More intriguingly, anytime Intelligence Officer Moraal's name was mentioned, his eyes widened and flashed red hot anger.

"...and that's when we learned about Thrawn's personal files." Snapping his attention back towards Jager, Angel realized they were reaching the climax of the story. "Moraal managed to get us a password and we waited for our opportunity."

Jager leaned forward, furrowing his brows and spreading a vengeful sneer on his face. "So we get into the Grand Muckface's office. He's gone, his ass-faced Noghri is gone. We try the password and bam. Nothing. Kip pushes everyone aside and works his magic. Then suddenly the door bursts open and two effing Noghri bust in. Kip manages a partial download of Thrawn's files and well...you see the results."

"The bitch sold us out." Jegora finally said. Angel almost jumped at his voice. Even with words that normally would be filled with animosity and hate, they just fell from his mouth. So hollow and empty were his words that they did not even echo against the walls of the room.

"Kip found she gave us a password that set off a silent alarm. We managed to escape the Chimera after evading the Noghri...but..." Jegora trailed off as he shook his head, still visibly trying to shake off the effects of being stranded behind enemy lines, betrayed by someone he trusted, yet somehow living to tell about it.

"I understand Sergeant." Rizzit finally said. "Intelligence reported that they lost contact with Moraal shortly before you said you were compromised."

"...like you wouldn't have believed us?" Jegora snapped back, rising to his feet in indignation. His former impassivity vanished in an instant. The former flashes of fire ignited into a full five alarm blaze behind the large man's eyes, and Angel wouldn't have been surprised if he had tried to snatch the life out of Rizzit right then and there. "Then I guess you won't believe us that among the files Kip downloaded was one for an attack plan on Tadath? That he financed Frozt's entire operation? That they plan on invading us in the next MONTH!?"

Jegora slammed his massive fist down on the table. "Maybe you should check with your precious Intelligence on those!" The Squad Leader threw himself back into his seat. Both hands pulled harshly at his hair as he spit his words out with as much malice as possible. "Oh wait, I forgot. You sent US deep undercover and WE pulled the information out while INTELLIGENCE effed us over?"

Angel exchanged glances with Rizzit, who remained impassive throughout Jegora's tirade. "What...did...you say?" he asked inquisitively.

Not bothering with an answer, Jegora tossed his datapad across the table and crossed his arms over his chest. Angel snatched the datapad before it slid off and hit the floor. Scanning the material, his eyes grew wider and wider. "Kriffing Hell..." The Tactical Officer said. "Rizzit, he has the details of all our defe..."

Before Angel could finish his sentence, an officer burst into room, his face plastered with panic, fear and worry. "A fleet of Star Destroyers just exited hyperspace over Tadath!" The man explained in a rushed tone. He ran to the communications console in the middle of the room and hit the loudspeaker button.

A chilling voice crackled through the speakers with a terrifying message: "Members of the Vast Empire Army, this is Grand Admiral Thrawn. No one need perish today, however, if you do not issue your unconditional surrender I will raze this moon and everyone on it. You have 30 minutes to respond."

Rizzit looked at Angel, who in turn looked at Jeg, whose face had gone from rage to shock. "Guess we pissed him off..." Jager ventured sheepishly. "He sure sounds like he's got his granny panties in a bunch."

Aboard the ISD-II Nemesis, In Orbit over Tadath

Former Vast Empire Intelligence Officer Faith Moraal stood aboard the bridge of the Nemesis and stared at the moon orbiting below her. She had been born and raised on Tadath, seen the stranglehold of Palpatine's rule...watched the chaos after his death and the subsequent rise of the Vast Empire. The toll it had taken on the residents of Tadath, and indeed all the planets now under the control of the Vast Empire, had forced her to join the military to try and help solidify the VE, to stabilize it for the citizens, and help erase the memories of those uncertain times.

And then they let Tadath be ravaged on a whim by Thrawn.

Her sister was burned alive when the mercenaries lit fires in Sianat City. Her mother's legs were crushed by falling debris, and her fiancée...mercilessly struck down by a Noghri. At first she hated the man responsible for it, and volunteered for any duty to help bring them to justice. She was sent aboard Thrawn's flagship, the Chimera. There she uncovered that Thrawn had been behind the attacks. Blinded by her anger, she plotted and planned to kill him then and there...but a funny thing happened. The longer she served under him, the more her anger faded. She started to respect him, and realized the plights of her family weren't his fault after all.

They were the Vast Empire's.

Curling her fists into balls, she turned away from the viewport and back to Captain Rien Tarren.  "Our first targets should be the orbital platforms and the Dominion." Moraal stated coldly. "The planet is protected by shutter-type shields, so they'll shift protection over Sianat and wherever our ships are orbiting. This will leave their polar shield generators vulnerable. Send in a few strike teams to take them out and the planet will fall like a ton of bricks."

Captain Tarren viewed the demeanor of his new "Advisor" carefully. He was aware she knew this planet and its defenses better than anyone, but he still had his reservations about entrusting three of his Admiral's capital ships to the strategies of a traitor. "We'll send troops to the shield generators, but I'm going to have walkers on standby just in case." He finally said, waving a hand to his XO to relay the commands.

"The attack begins in ten minutes."

"Where the hell is Cosmic?!"

The last twenty minutes had flown by as initial panic, shock, and surprise gave way to the calm and cold precision of military training. A single airspeeder flew through the air above the surface of Tadath carrying Angel and Rizzit towards Fort Sexton, the Stormtrooper Corps base of operations. Army procedures called for the High Council to be moved from their administrative headquarters in Sianat City to the much heavier fortified Fort. However planetary communications were jammed by Thrawn's fleet, and neither Angel nor Rizzit had been able to contact the Prefect.

"He was supposed to be viewing the Tagge Proving Grounds today with Riqimo." Rizzit answered, having to shout to be heard above the roar of the air rushing past the open cockpit. "How's the orders coming along?"

"Almost finished" Angel replied. Ever since the message from Thrawn had been received, his mind had been focused on getting the squads under his command deployed to mount a proper defense. His only hesitation was deploying Jester at this point. They were obviously frayed to their very last nerve, and in the face of a direct invasion by Thrawn their defenses could not afford any weaknesses.

But then again, he had no choice.

The transport veered sharply downward, descending onto the landing platform at Fort Sexton. A squad of stormtroopers rushed out from the building to meet the Army High Council members and ushered them inside. Angel barely looked up as he furiously typed away at the datapad, finalizing each squad's orders.

"Done." He replied once again to Rizzit. The stormtroopers lead the pair directly to the command center of the Fort, where they could coordinate defenses and monitor the battle to come. Arnaut, the Wildcard Platoon Commander, was already there barking orders at various soldiers and officers. Seeing  Rizzit and Angel enter the room, he snapped a quick salute then resumed previous barking.

"I'm contacting each squad leader now to relay their orders." Angel told Rizzit. "After that there's only one last thing to do."

"Sir!" A communications officer shouted excitedly aboard the Nemesis. "We have a transmission from the leaders of the Vast Empire's Army!"

Faith Moraal's jaw almost hit the floor.

She knew the Vast Empire had become complacent and weak in defending their home worlds, but she had never expected them to actually surrender. Captain Tarren viewed her reaction again with skepticism, not able to shack the notion that they were about to be double crossed.

"On screen." Tarren ordered.

A few seconds of static were replaced by the image of a tall man with blonde hair and piercing amber eyes dressed in the uniform of a Lieutenant. "To the forces of Grand Admiral Thrawn over Tadath. I am First Lieutenant Jikkyo Nimiichi, Tactical Officer of the Imperial Army. After careful consideration, we have developed the appropriate response to your demands of surrender." The arrogant Lieutenant sneered into the holoprojector and extended both of his middle fingers.

"Get some."

OOC:

Phase I: Enter Thrawn - Stage Left
Location: Tadath
Terrain: Mountains, Plains, Polar Ice Caps, Cityscape
Objective: Defend Tadath from the invasion forces of Grand Admiral Thrawn.
History: Grand Admiral Thrawn's ambitions of re-unifying the Imperial factions under his banner have been repeatedly rebuffed by the Vast Empire. In the past few years, several skirmishes have been fought between VE and Remnant forces. These have been generally minor and the political impact negligible. Yet with Thrawn's victories over the New Republic increasing, his ambitions to bolster his ranks have greatly increased. Several months ago, Storm and Wildcard Platoons foiled a mysterious cyberattack which threatened to cripple the Corps. At the time it was believed to have been carried out by mercenary forces working for one man, Ja'k Frozt. However, during the battle of Anteevy, a Victory-Class Star Destroyer appeared to extract Frozt who then travelled to Sianat City on Tadath and continued his attack. He was accompanied by four mysterious creatures later determined to be Noghri. These disturbing events caused the Army High Council to commission Jester Squad with a full investigation into who was really behind Frozt's attacks. (Story here) Their investigation revealed that it was indeed Grand Admiral Thrawn who financed, supplied and planned the attacks. Jester was further sent to infiltrate Thrawn's forces by assuming the guise of fresh graduates of the Imperial Academy on Caridia. VE Intelligence had already placed an agent on the Chimera, Thrawn's flagship, and during the course of Jester's investigation blew their cover and betrayed the squad. Jester has only recently returned, having narrowly escaped after a partial download of Thrawn's personal files. A review of these revealed Thrawn's plan for a full scale assault on Tadath, designed to cripple the VE and ensure their obedience.
Current Situation: Because of Jester's escape with his files, Thrawn moved up his timetable for the attack to still retain some element of surprise. As the Army High Council scrambled to make appropriations for the defense of Tadath, Thrawn's fleet has exited hyperspace near Tadath and is commencing the assault.

A violent explosion rocked the bridge of the Aggrevator, sending crew sprawling across the deck. Commodore Llewas Kalar grabbed the nearest console and heaved his aged body back to his feet. I'm getting too damn old for this. He bemoaned silently. Gathering himself and brushing the dust off his usually spotless uniform, the veteran ship commander waited for the bridge crew to compose itself before barking orders.

"Status!" He shouted. "That didn't feel like a torpedo hit!"

"Shields are still holding, sir." One crew member responded. "Negative on hull breach."

"Internal malfunction then?" Kalar queried, turning to a systems analyst.

"Negative sir...oh shit! All weapons are offline! Power reactor four has been taken down sir. It's not responding to a restart!" The analyst replied excitedly.

"Security is reporting enemy troops have infiltrated the ship." The deck officer stated, reading a report crawling across his screen. "Unknown numbers, but up to sixteen of our squads have failed to report it."

Sithspit Kalar said to himself. Approaching the officer he issued commands"Raise the alarm, get secondary security teams to their stations. Their next likely targets are the gravity well projectors. I want E-Webs and squads posted there ASAP."

The Commodore hobbled his way back to the Captain's Chair and addressed his XO. "Inform Captain Tarren we have lost weapons and are withdrawing to maximum well range for the planet."

I'm getting too old for this

Back at Fort Sexton...

"L-L-Lieutenant!" A communications tech bearing the rank of Lance Corporal stammered. "I think I've got something on the communications network!"

Both Rizzit and Angel hurried over to the tech's station, who was excitedly tapping away at the keys. "What do you mean?" The two AHC members said in unison.

"I worked a bit of magic, bouncing signals between relays stations on the far side of Tadath, away from the jamming signal. Also, the Interdictor has pulled away from the main engagement, weakening the jamming. I was able to bypass the weakened interference and have picked up a signal from some of our troops!"

"Which squads?" Angel asked, already reaching for his datapad to upload new orders.

"Blackjack sir, aboard the Aggrevator." The tech responded. "They've been broadcasting that they have disabled the weapons system on the Interdictor and are awaiting further orders."

Atta'boy Tanus. Angel thought inwardly as he finalized the message. Hitting the send button, the Tactical Officer mentally crossed his fingers and hoped there were enough Jackies left for the next mission.

Aboard the bridge of the Sentinel

Colonel Arvis Rennagen ran from terminal to terminal reading status gauges, damage assessments and troop reports. In the short amount of time since the small fleet had dropped out of hyperspace and began their assault, the Sentinel had been hit the hardest. Shields were down to almost 20% under the relentless assault from the ISD-II flagged as the Nemesis and the VSD_II Inexorable. Compounding the issue were the assault troops that had landed.

While the combined might of the Star Corps and one of the Stormtrooper Corps most distinguished squads had drive off the main boarding party, reports were flooding in from marines all over the platform of boarding craft punching through the hulls like drills. Worse yet were the details of the troops that were disembarking from the strange craft...Shadowtroopers.

The sound of blasterfire echoed down the hallway from the bridge. Cursing in the three languages he knew, Rennagen shouted at the nearest deck officer. "Seal the bridge door! And get that kriffing stormtrooper squad out of the hangar bay and killing these damn Shadowtroopers!"

On the bridge of the Inexorable...

"Rotate ship 40 degrees to port."

"Yessir."

The Victory-II class Star Destroyer rotated on it's x-axis precisely 40 degrees. A standard defensive maneuver for a Star Destroyer, it brought freshly charged shields to bear, while also spelling the gunners on the now out of combat side of the capital vessel. It was almost page one of the Captain's manual, "how to keep your ship alive longer," but it always warmed 1st Lieutenant Erran Knesos' heart to see a bridge crew perform it so precisely.

"Rotation completed sir" His XO stated matter-of-factly.

"Very good. Continue bombardment." Knesos ordered. All-in-all, he had to admit he hadn't expected the mission to go this smoothly. The Vast Empire was putting up a good fight, but their forces seemed to be advancing steadily on all fronts.

The only thing left now was to tighten the noose.

A slow smile crept across the Lieutenant's face. Thrawn rewarded those who served him well, and he could already imagine the honors waiting him back at Bastion. However it was in this moment, when he lost a bit of focus, the very last thing he expected to happen did.

Alarm klaxons blared across the bridge, indicating that all shields had been lost. Whirling towards his systems analyst, Lieutenant Knesos fixed him in an intense glare. "What...the...hell..."

"I...I don't know sir!" The analyst fumbled. "One minute they were operating at 68%, the next...wait, I see the problem. Someone has shut down the shield generators!"

"Saboteurs!" The XO hissed between his teeth. Pointing at the nearest security officer he ordered "Alert all security personnel! Tell them to scour the ship top to bottom."

Explosions rocked the port side of the ship as turbolaser strikes from the Golan-I and Rendili Platforms hit home on the durasteel hull. Flames were starting to become visible out the front viewport as the hull was breached and the atmosphere was vented into space. "Hull breaches in sections 8, 11 and 16!" The analyst shouted loudly.

"Lieutenant!" This time it was the navigator trying to get Knoses' attention. "Should we disengage?" A deafening silence overtook the bridge. Only the sound of the shield alarms was audible as the bridge crew stopped their tasks and awaited their commander's decision. Knoses' mind blanked as more explosions rocked the ship...

Finally after a tense minute, he shook his head and addressed the crew. "We will NOT retreat. We are the damned Imperial Navy! Pull the Inexorable to maximum range!"

"Yessir!" The navigator responded.

"Put her in a slow spin to minimize local damage." Turning towards the systems control engineer, he shouted. "Seal off the venting sections. Get fire crews down there immediately."

"We WILL. NOT. BACK. DOWN."

Aboard the bridge of the Dominion

"Men and Women of the Vast Empire" A male voice announced in a stoic yet assertive fashion over the communications system of the Dominion

Commodore Kara Elith whirled from the console she had been bent over at the sound of the voice coming through her ship's comm system. Fixing her communications officer in her icy blue gaze. Crossing the short distance between them, she stood behind his computer with one hand on her hip and the other fingering her sidearm. "What the hell is that? She demanded

"I'm not sure ma'am." The officer stammered. "One of their assault squads must have patched a remote link into the system. If I can isolate the ter..."

Before he could finish his sentence however, Kara slammed her fist down on the computer top. Reaching out, she grabbed him by the collar and drew his face just inches from his. "I don't CARE about all the technobabble bullshit." She shouted in his face, "I want this jerkoff out of my system, and I want it done five minutes ago!"

Releasing the now profusely sweating officer, Commodore Elith cringed inwardly as the dull, monotonous voice continued its morale killing message. "There is no reason to continue this pointless defense, lay down your arms and surrender. Your job is over, your leaders have been crushed and soon your planet will be conquered. Why bother throwing your life away to a lost cause. Surrender now and no harm will come to you."

Looking around her, Kara could see some of the greener crew looking around nervously to gauge the reactions of their comrades in arms. One Star Corps marine even took a step back towards the door of the bridge...only to freeze as the Dominion's captain leveled her side-arm at him. The entire bridge froze in place and time itself seemed to stand still as no one dared to breath. "Leave your post, and I'll consider that desertion." She let the sound of the safety being removed echo through the deathly silent bridge, "and I'll execute you here and now."

Before the situation could develop further, however, the communications officer tugged on the sleeve of her free arm. "Ma'am! I've locked him out, the comm system is ours!"

Without lowering her weapon, Kara motioned for the commlink which the officer quickly handed her. Locking her eyes with the Star Corps trooper, she spoke into the device. "This is Captain Kara Elith of the Victory-class Star Destroyer Dominion with a message to both the crew of the vessel and its distinguished guests. This fight is far from over. All personnel still able to fight are to make their way towards the bridge or secure their current location and hold out. If they want this ship so badly, then we'll make sure they pay for every inch of it. Commodore Elith out."

Dropping the commlink, she tilted her head at the marine . "Are we clear?"

Back at the Fort Sexton Command Center...

First Lieutenant Angel stood at the transparisteel window in silence, blocking out the noise and confusion of the analysts, commanders and technicians as they frantically shouted, ran about and tossed papers and datapads around the room. Much to his dismay, Angel admitted to himself that Thrawn had caught them with their pants down. Worse yet, word had come through that Kara Elith, the woman who had betrayed Jester aboard the Chimera, was directing the assault from the ISD-II Nemesis in orbit.

That their orbital defenses had held this long was nothing short of a miracle and he feared that the enemy could sense that as well. With Elith leading the attack, they would know when and where to attack. Damage and casualty reports were flooding in faster than they could be processed as thousands of names belonging to thousands of soldiers were just stored in a database to process later.

"Sir?" Startled from his revelry, Angel turned to see a small framed female officer a few steps behind and to the side of him. A datapad was clutched tightly in her hands to the point her knuckles were white with tension.

"You have something for me?" He responded in a drab tone.

"Yessir." She replied formally. The young officer held the datapad in front of her, waiting for the Tactical Officer to take it. "Battle report from the polar shield generator and satellite images of the surrounding area."

Always nice to see a solider do as they were ordered Angel remarked inwardly. He had ordered battle reports pertaining to any of his Company's squads brought to him immediately, and thus far they had done an admirable job at it. "Thank you." he said, taking the datapad from her.

The officer snapped a quick salute and turned on her heel to head back to whatever task she had been doing before. Angel browsed the contents of the datapad quickly, and was instantly pleased by what he saw. It seemed Wraith had successfully kept the shield generator safe, repelling a large assault team with ease.  There had been very few casualties reported and the enemy seemed to be on the run.

A slow smile crept across the Phoenix Company Commander's face...only to be replaced with a sour scowl as he reached the intelligence satellite photos.

"Rizzit!" Angel shouted, not looking up from the datapad. The Army XO raised a curious eyebrow at his subordinate from across the room where he had been engrossed in coversation with Arnaut.

"Yeah?"

"What heavy vehicles do we have up north?" Angel asked.

"I know there's a Juggernaut at the Proving Grounds that should be in battle condition," Rizzit responded, furrowing his brow. "Why?"

Angel tossed the General the datapad and stated matter-of-factly, "Because Kand is going to need it...and soon."

Back aboard the bridge of the Inexorable

1st Lieutenant Erran Knesos' head was splitting. The sheer ineptitude of the Victory Star Destroyer's security teams was almost too much for him to bear. They had located the enemy saboteurs more than once, and each time the security failed miserably at capturing them. Worse yet, it seemed they were steadily progressing through the ship at will towards whatever critical system was next to go down.

The Captain of the Inexorable rubbed his temples to try and soothe away the pain. Slowly but surely the pain started to ease as he regained his wits and took full measure of their situation: Yes, they were out of the main battle, but their turbolasers still scored hits on the Space Platforms while remaining out of range. More importantly, however, was that the ship was still able to deliver its ground troops for the coming invasion.

The last throbs of pain were waning from his skull when another shrill alarm tore through the bridge and renewed the full ferocity of the migraine. "What NOW?!" He shouted above the wail of the siren.

This time it was the weapons officer that responded from the bridge's pit. "Sir...we've..." The officer hesitated, unsure of how to phrase the situation.

"Spit it out sergeant." Knesos ordered, shaking his head in disbelief, "nothing will surprise me today."

"We've lost all targetting systems. We're firing blind."

Emperor's black bones Knesos said inwardly We're useless now... Both hands covered his face as the Lieutenant hung his head in shame and embarrassment. There was only one thing he could do now, and that was protect the troops for deployment. Turning once again to his navigation officer, he issued another order. "Take us to the edge of the system. Inform the Nemesis we are defenseless and withrdrawing to await the assault...and someone KILL the damn intruders!"

Once again at the Command Center within Fort Sexton

"Sir!" An intelligence analyst shouted above the noise and ruckus. "The VSD-II is disengaging!"

A round of cheers and applause ripped through the command center. It quickly dissipated under the heated glares of Rizzit and Angel. The battle was far from over, and the two AHC members knew that even at the edge of the system, the Inexorable still posed a threat.

Rizzit did however, toss a smirk at Angel "Looks like the RAIDERS are gettin' it done." The General said, "Guess we left our old squad in good hands."

"They aren't done yet." Angel replied with a dead pan tone. "Not a chance in hell we let that VSD deploy its troops." Pulling out his datapad, he quickly typed up new orders for StarFruit and Havock. Praying that the communications were still functioning enough to get the message through, Angel hit send.

In one fleeting instant, the entire outlook of the battle for Tadath changed. The Vast Empire had been advancing on all fronts, casting aside the assault Thrawn had mustered. They had sustained heavy losses, and both the Dominion and Sentinel were starting to look like swiss cheese, but it seemd momentum was in their favor. The interdictor had lost its gravity wells, weapons, and engines and was floating adrift near the outskirts of the battle. The VSD-II suffered a similar fate, and only the Nemesis remained a direct threat to the planet...if the shields held.

Ancient proverbs say that the flap of a mynocks wings can cause a tornado on the other side of a planet. Angel now knew this to be true.

The slightest delay of Paladin leaving planetside for the Veritas had given Thrawn all the advantage he needed. Despite the squad's valiant efforts, the saboteurs had been too quick and too effective at destabilizing the orbit of the Golan-I platform. Staring out the viewport of Fort Sexton's control center, Angel gazed at the setting sun, counting down the moments until the Veritas lost orbit. General Rizzit came up along side him just as the massive defense station came into view.

"Are all our forces ready?" Angel asked his superior officer. "The attack will come quickly."

"All squads are accounted for. Wraith and Paladin are en route back to the Fort." Rizzit replied, wiping a bead of sweat from his brow. BlackJack and RAIDERS are already getting reequipped and are awaiting orders."

"What about Jester and Iron Horse?" Angel asked absently. His mind was entirely elsewhere, save the basic functions needed to formulate a response and process Rizzit's words. The station grew larger and larger as it's orbit failed. Only bare moments remained before it breached the shields. The death toll from it's impact would be astronomical, he knew, regardless of where it impacted.

"Jester is already prepping their shuttle for take-off, while Iron Horse is fueling their speeder bikes." The General once again replied. His voice carried the same hollow, somber tone as Angel's, and the Tactical Officer knew his good friend was fully feeling the gravity of the situation.

All at once the brilliant sunset vanished, replaced by a blinding supernova of light as the Veritas slammed into the planetary shields. The shields held at first as the station crumpled and burnt against it, but their sheer luminescence faded as they buckled. Bolts of electricity shot across the sky and the ground under Angel's feet rocked slightly with the explosion of a nearby shield generator as it overloaded. As the sound caught up to the visual, an ear-piercing explosion ripped through the command center. The shockwave carried by the sound rattled the transparisteel windows and knocked several unprepared techs off their feet.

Maintaining his balance, Angel watched as the remains of the station increased their rate of decent, igniting in the friction of the atmosphere.

"Projected impact?" Arnaut asked, still hunched over the same console reading casualty reports and damage readouts.

"Current velocity profile indicates a land impact in the outskirts of Susiale." The tech who's console Arnaut was leaning over responded. "Resulting impact explosions could threaten Harmu."

Sighing heavily, Angel did the mental casualty math  quickly. There was no sense trying to evacuate people, as it would only cause further casualties of their military forces. He looked at Rizzit, who returned the same defeated gaze.

"Send the squads' their orders." Angel stated with a dark tint of malice tinging his voice. "I'm already sick of letting these jackholes kill us. It's time to repay the favor."

The deafening roar and violent shaking of the Veritas hitting Tadath shattered the transparisteel windows of Fort Sexton, drowning out any further comment.

Aboard the Nemesis

Cheers erupted from the bays of the Star Destroyer's bridge. Captain Rien Tarren let the smallest of smiles escape his usually stoic expression. For a long while he feared the Grand Admiral had underestimated their opponent and lead them astray. As his small fleet as torn apart from the inside and forces to withdraw, the Nemesis stood as a beacon of strength amidst the ever disheartening losses. His finger had strayed more than once towards the comm switch to order a retreat, but each time the faith he had in Thrawn overtook any fear creeping within in.

At the front of the bridge stood the woman who betrayed her people and was now directly responsible for the deaths of millions of sentient species on the moon of Nodriss. Faith Moraal felt a single tear stain her cheek at the mushroom cloud visible from space that appeared near the horizon of the planet. Her resolve faltered and she felt herself choke with each breath. The chokes racked her body, causing her swollen tear ducts to trail more salt filled regret down her face.

She hadn't been alone in her plot, she knew, Thrawn preyed upon the weakness and fears of others, twisting them around to serve his purposes. As she had done to him, so too had several of the Vast Empire's Moffs cast their lot in with the leader of the Imperial Remnant. It was a necessary evil, she knew. Millions would be sacrificed so the glory of the Empire could be reborn. With Tadath in ruins, Lotaith would not far fall behind it. The strike to the heart of the VE would cripple it to the point of breaking. Cepany would secede, and Lotaith would be left almost defenseless...If the blow landed.

Behind her, she heard Tarren speaking with the Grand Admiral. She turned on her heel with practiced military precision and wiped the tears from her eyes. Striding confidently despite the turmoil inside her, she took position behind Tarren and in view of the Grand Admiral's visage.

"Good, proceed with the troop deployment Captain." Thrawn's deep voice boomed across the bridge. "If our field commanders execute their plans properly, Sianat City should be ours before day break."

The Admirals glowing red eyes flickered as he recognized Faith behind the Captain. "Lieutenant Moraal, not second guessing yourself are you?"

"No sir." She replied sharply. Years of intelligence training taught her to hide her emotions, but deep down she knew such facades were useless against the piercing gaze of Thrawn. "The planet will be ours."

OOC:

Phase II: And You Said This Was Going to Be Easy...
Location: Squad Dependent
Terrain: Varies
Objective: Defend Tadath from the ground invasion of Grand Admiral Thrawn, while counter-attacking strategic targets outside the system.
Current Situation: The Veritas has crashed into the planetary shields and taken them offline. This allows Thrawn to deploy his ground troops around the planet and begin his attack. Storm Platoon is being sent on counter-attack missions, while Wildcard is primarily defending Tadath.

Night had fallen over Sianat City. The brilliant crimson and gold sunset serving as both a tribute to the blood already shed, and an omen of more to come. Yet despite the sun falling behind the horizon, the skyline of Sianat City continued to glow bright red as fire streaked uncontrollably through the streets. The air between Fort Sexton and Tadath's capitol was filled with putrid smoke and stunk of a mixture of charred flesh, burning refuse, and fear. Despite the valiant efforts of the Vast Empire's Army, Thrawn's tactics were working.

Angel had to pause his thoughts and admire the Chiss' sheer tactical brilliance. At every turn in the battle, just when he thought they had scored a victory, the battle turned against them. They had crippled the fleet in orbit, only to have the Veritas dropped on their heads. They had captured the traitor Moraal, only to lose the Academy. Worse yet, reports were now coming in that First Lieutenant Riqimo was among those captured at the Academy, and the location of Surface Marshall Cosmic was still unknown.

So there Angel stood, second guessing every order he had written as he stared out the transparisteel window of Fort Sexton. The AHC had put their faith in the tactics he had employed on every successful mission as a squad leader and the campaign on Eriadu to lead the Army's forces and direct the critical aspects of the battle, and he failed them.

Tens of thousands of soldiers were dead or dying. Thousands more had been captured. Among them, as Angel was just now learning as his datapad beeped with a new report, were the RAIDERS. It was one thing to read the names of random soldiers on a screen of MIA, but it was quite another to have served alongside them. The Army's Tactical Officer ran one of his hands through his blonde hair and exhaled slowly. No reports had been received from Paladin or Jester, who had been sent off-world in vitally important counter attacks and at this point Angel just assumed he had sent them to their deaths. His head shook back and forth as he continued to scroll through the reports of Wraith's excursion into Sianat City and he had to chuckle. Apparently Thrawn was so brilliant that he managed to turn the populace he was killing, into an ally.

"GET DOWN!"

A shout from the back of the command center rattled Angel out of his stupor. The brief flash of warning in his mind, predicated him throwing his body to the floor and covering his head. Intense waves of heat rolled across his back and a deafening roar tore through the command center. Blinding red light flared in his vision as a volley of heavy laser bolts ripped through the window he had just been looking out. Screams of agony and death rose from the ashes of the lasers, and Angel reluctantly rose to his feet. Sheer agony coursed through his veins as he realized the pure heat of the laser blast had scorched his back. Clearing his mind, he focused and turned the pain inwardly into pure, un-adultured rage.

Ignoring the pain and gathering his feet, he peeked his head around the charred remains of the transparisteel window to witness an AT-AT lumber past, raking its cannons across the facade of Fort Sexton. It in turn burst into flame as several TIE-bombers from the Army's Aerospace Corps dropped their payload on the walking machine of death. Checking the operational capability of the datapad still clutched firmly in his hand, Angel narrowed his eyes and spun back to the command center.

Rizzit and Arnaut were just getting their feet back themselves, the former raising an eyebrow at the expression on Angel's face. Several bodies were still smoking, their faces twisted in the horrible pain of their death. Still others had simply cease to exist as the full might of the volley hit them directly. Most of the equipment still looked in working order, and the survivors had started to pick themselves up and move beleagueredly back to their posts.

Returning Rizzit's gaze, Angel shook his head and scowled. "This ends now."

**              **              **

"Escaped? What do you mean she escaped?"

Captain Rien Tarren gulped, trying to clear the giant lump forming in his throat. Sweat poured profusely from his brow, saturating the brim of his officer's cap as his eyes flicked nervously back and forth. He had felt the ire of Grand Admiral Thrawn's displeasure once, and the mere thought of it made his blood chill. "A...A strike team captured her, and we were unable to stop them. Not even your Noghri could stop them..."

"So you let single strike team tear through an IMPERIAL STAR DESTROYER and take our asset on a WHIM?!" Despite the distance between them, Tarren wouldn't have been surprised if the Grand Admiral's vehement red eyes struck him down then and there.

"It matters not, my Lord." Tarren stammered, "We have taken their Academy, and their capitol city burns. It will not be long before Fort Sexton falls and the planet is ours. We do not need her anymore."

"You are a fool Captain." Thrawn laughed as he threw his head back. The change in expression confused Tarren, but something about it sent chills down his spine. "You of all people should know something about symbols...and she knows our entire battle plan!"

Tarren searched for the words to say in response, but the blue skinned Chiss cut him off. "And as for my Noghri failing, I invite you to tell that Rushuk." Thrawn's visage smiled fiendishly as the Captain of the Nemesis followed his gaze to the scythe wielding Noghri behind him. A strange coldness washed over him suddenly as his legs went limp and he crumpled to the floor. He blinked his eyes in confusion and put his fingers to his lips. When they came away with blood, he looked down to see an ornate blade jutting from his chest. Darkness crept into the corners of his vision, but he felt no pain. For this he was grateful to the skill of the Noghri...then all went black.

"Lieutenant Rhen Armada!" Thrawn barked from his display.

The XO of the Nemesis stepped forward from where he stood just meters away from where Tarren had been cut down. Biting his lip nerviously, he shuffled his feet back and forth under the relentless glare of his Admiral. "Y-Yes, my Lord?"

"Congratulations Captain, the Nemesis is yours. See to it you do not fail me."

"I won't Admiral." Armada saluted. Thrawn merely nodded and winked out of existence as he cut the communications feed. Turning towards the stunned subordinates above the bridge, Armada took a deep breath as the Noghri flicked the ichor of the former Captain Tarren from it's blade. Armada motioned for security to drag the body away before speaking to the bridge crew. "Signal our ground commanders. I want Fort Sexton razed to the ground before day break!"
