Rell looked through his binoculars at the surrounding cityscape and breathed in deeply. This was what he was meant for, not in the action directly, but still a part of it. Recon was his specialty and he excelled at it.

His partner was doing the same as Rell, eyes scoped in on the surrounding buildings for any sign of the New Republic. They had been up here for only about fifteen minutes, but already they were beginning to feel relaxed from the fighting before. The Empire held the Comm tower now and Rell knew that all they had to do was defend it.

Not so hard when they've all run away. He thought with a grin, continuing to scan the streets for signs of any New Republic troopers.

The sun was beginning to set now and a couple stars showed themselves on the dark side of the horizon. Rell began to squint in the darkness, his task beginning to become harder as the streets were plunged into a gloom.

Suddenly, he noticed movement to the west of the tower, where some light was still left. He struggled to see if there actually was something there or if the night was playing tricks on him.

No, there it goes again. There's definitely someone down there. Rell thought, reaching for the comlink. He had to tell Kartov about this. That's when he noticed the large tank rolling down the street.

"Get down!" Rell said to his squadmate. They crouched below the lip of the roof, only glancing over once in a while to note the location of the New Republic tank.

Rell began talking into his comlink. "Uh, sir, we have a major problem."

The reply was swift and harsh. "What are you talking about soldier? We're busy down here."

"Sir, we have New Republic reinforcements rolling down the street to our west. I repeat, we have a tank inbound on the tower."

There was a long pause before the short reply came. "Get back down here. We need to prepare."

"Yes sir. Rell out." Rell said into the comlink, before motioning to his squad mate. "Let's get the hell out of here."

Abel nodded. He wasnt much for words.

Quickly he followed Rell back down  the stairs where they had come from. It was getting dark, and going down the stairs, with the lights all blown out, the only light inside the towere was the moonlight pouring though the shattered windows. It almost gave it a kind of ghostly feel. Abel was sure that after this battle, the local townspeople would consider this towere to be haunted. In a way they were kind of right. There had been many deaths in this tower. If this tower does end up being haunted, it will probably Pace's ghost that resides over this place... Shaking his head he silently scolded himself for even believing such a thing.

His train of though was inturupted when he reached the floor where the rest of Banshee squad was. Here everything was filled with the blue glow of the computer terminal Zeff was working at. Aside from this, there was the moonlight coming from the gaping hole in the wall that he had seen Rell blown out.

"Sir," Abel addressed Kartov. Kartov turned towards him and Rell.

"Permission to speak freely?" Abel asked.

"Just ask."

Clearing his throat, he said, "Seeing as they have our APC and we are up here, and they could just easily blow us out of here, shouldnt we call in some reinforcements and take them in from behind? That we we still will stand a chance against them."

Kartov, turning back to face the monitor over Zeffs shoulder, replied, "Yes, I have already thought of this in fact. However, there are two problems to this. If you havnt already noticed, our communications are down as well as theirs."

"Oh, well... I hadnt thought about that," Abel admitted.

Nodding, Kartov continued,"Mhmm...the second thing is that even if we did open up our communications and called in back up, they would also do the same. The only difference would be that we would be fighting on two fronts: us up here in the tower against the tank, and then the two reinforcements would pitted against each other." Abel nodded in understandment.

Kartov looked back at him and gave him a small smile. "Although that doesnt mean i have dismissed that plan of action. We still have a chance up here, and we will try to hold them off as long as possible. However, if worse comes to worse, we can call in back up. And if our reinforcments do take out their back up, then we can take our extra men to take out the tank from behind."

Rubbing his tired eyes, Kartov sighed. Abel had simpathy for the man. It had been a long battle that had lasted through the day and now lingered on into the night.

"But for now," Kartov reassured him,"...we wait and see how this battle fairs."

“Damn it all, I should have seen this coming, but there may just be a way to hinder them,” Kartov thought aloud.

“Sir?”

“Give me a minute to work out the details and you might as well stop trying to get a jamming signal out. They already have re-enforcements en route.”

Zeff nodded then picked up his weapon. He was always ready for something to do and it did not matter what it was he would get it done.

Three minutes later, the observation team returned to the now imperial command post. They had no clue what their squad leader had in store and Zeff was the only one that could even attempt to fathom as to what Kartov was cooking up in his head.

Kartov was pacing back and forth, which was nothing new because he had been doing that most of the time he was in the command post. He was clearly deep in thought working diligently on his plan. Then suddenly he stopped dead in his tracks and ripped off his helmet. The look on the Sergeant’s face would have scared even the most hardened man.

“They know that we want a fight and they have brought it to us, but let’s turn the tides and decide we don’t want to fight.”

The troopers including Zeff were astonished at what their leader had just stated. Their minds began to race. “Are we going to surrender?” “Are we going to suicide?” They were all unsettled by this.

“Worry not; the only thing that we are going to fail today is our objective. This tower is going to fall, which should give us a perfect distraction to allow us to make our escape.”

The squad became just a bit more at ease. They still did not know how they were going to make this structure fall or even if they did they did not know how they would make it away from the falling tower. They were after all still on the upper levels of the tower.

“Here is the plan. The New Republic idiots rigged this building with charges, so they have already done most of the work for us. Zeff, I want you to take a look through the computer system. I’m betting that they rigged it up through that. Find it and reprogram the detonation times. Set the western side ones on a shorter time than the eastern. Lucky for us, the western side is already weak.”

Kartov’s eyes were filled with insanity. With the explanation, the team knew he had plans to have the building topple onto the incoming foes. The tower would most likely not destroy the incoming armor, but would hinder its movement drastically.

“The rest of you shall retreat through the eastern doors. That should keep you all safe from falling debris and from enemy fire. Zeff and I will catch up with you after we are certain that the charges will go. The New Republic won’t know what hit them.”

Kartov began to laugh manically.

Matthial was manning the E-web of the APC when the ground started to rumble; quickly making a prayer to any god that might be listening, the NR trooper swivelled around. The treads of the tank crushed the body of a fallen Imperial trooper and for the first time since this mission began Matt felt safe. Eight troopers were jogging alongside the tank finally the tank stopped just short of the APC, the hatch popped open and a man’s head emerged. “Sergeant Tank?” He asked.

The Chimera’s squad leader stepped forward signalling that he was in fact the man in charge. “Who am I speaking to?”

“Doesn’t even know the man who is coming to save his hide. I’m Sergeant Crick Mason of Strill squad, and I’m here to make sure those damn Imperials do not get that Communications Tower!” The man nearly roared.

Strill squad rang a bell in Matthial’s mind then he remembered where he had heard Strill being mentioned. Crick Mason was well known around the VE’s many barracks as the biggest bitch in the corps, meaning that he complains about every little detail and does not stop complaining hell one PA had sent him back to basic to learn a lesson but it had obviously gone over his head.

Shortly after introductions were made it was quickly concluded that the New Republic officially had seventeen active men; five in the APC, four in the tank, and eight standing around. The two sergeants were arguing over whom would be the commanding officer of this mission, while the two men stood bickering Matthial looked over the comm. Tower. There was some blaster bolt scars on the first two floors of the tower, a rather large section of wall missing off the top, and an exploded office halfway up the building. Matthial continued staring at the building when a slight glint of sunshine caught his eye, pulling out his pair of macrobinoculars the PFC was able to get a closer inspection on what that glint was. The barrel of a wicked looking E-web stared out back at the assembled troops, Matt called out at the same time that the blaster opened fire.

The NR ground troops quickly took cover, using buildings, rubble, and one man used the tank for cover, however one man was hit, the crumpled form of the trooper with his hands over his abdomen crying out for a medic that would not come until the threat had been neutralized.

Zeff, while a little suprised at this new tactic, knew that this was probably the best course of action. He was at first a little bit worried about Kartov, wondering if this battle had finally pushed him over the mental line of sanity. But he knew better. After all his years and countless battles he had had next to Kartov's side, he knew that this man was one of the most toughest and hardened man he had ever met. And it was an honor to serve by his side.

Turning back to focus on the screen, he quickly pulled up a list of all the key areas throughout this structure to take it down efficeintly, and with the least amount of damage to the surrounding area. Normally, it would be set on default so that the building would collapse when ordered to from any computer terminal. But when he tried to bring up the controlls for the demolition, a little popup apeared. Eyes wide, he read the notice and swallowed.

"Uh...sir?" Zeff turned toward Kartov. "What is it, Zeff? We don't have much time before the enemy reinforcments arrive."

"Sir, theres a problem with the charges. It appears to be set to a remote detonator." Kartov still stared at him, waiting for an explanation. Sighing, Zeff explained, "The rebels have the manuall detonator to explode the charges. They have the only way to blow up the charges."

Kartov started to pace again. After a moment he turned back to the squad. "We need to send a recon team to go and retrieve the detonator."

“Hmm, never mind on sending anyone on a retrieval mission. That would only give the New Republic fools a hint as to our intents. We are going to manually arm the devices. Zeff can you get any readings on minor radio signals? If so, those are our devices.”

“One moment sir.” Zeff began to flip switches and mash buttons on the console. Beeps and murmurs could be heard bouncing off of the console.

A minute later, Zeff spun around in the chair to face his sergeant, “Found them.” He pointed to the screen. There were three blips on the western side, and four on the eastern side. Kartov turned to face the four others.

“You four take the eastern four. Set the timer for seven and a half minutes. Zeff and I shall take care of the western four. After you set your timers, do not, I repeat, do not wait for us. Get out immediately! Now, get to it.”

The four saluted and headed out the door to their personal objectives. Kartov turned to Zeff. No words were spoken. Just a simple nod was all that was needed for the two to convey their regards. They replaced their helmets on their heads. They marched out of the command post for the final time.

The two parted ways when they entered the hallway. Zeff rushed off to his objective, still just as focused as ever even when faced with the potential of being caught inside of a falling building. Kartov was undaunted by looking straight into the face of death.

The others were wondering if Kartov was crazed into suicide. Rell had reached his device first. He kneeled down and looked at the box. He popped the side open, which revealed a small entry pad and digital screen. He plugged in his desired time and paused to make sure he had done it properly. The timer ticked from five minutes down. He closed the casing and rushed to help the others.

A voice crackled over the com-link, “I don’t want anyone coming back to this side of the tower to give us a hand.” It was Kartov. Rell stopped dead in his tracks when he heard this. “That’s an order.”

With that he retreated to the eastern exit. The other three were there when he arrived.

“What now?”

“We are supposed to get away, but I personally am going to hang around for a few minutes for the sergeant and Zeff to get here.” The other three nodded and stood their ground. They could not do anything if their squad mates did not come out.

“Well let’s move out then, Strill squad, you fools might want to wander into the APC here, these guys are pretty well equipped.”

“Oh yes, lets hide in the armor, sounds like a wonderful plan.” Crick mason was bitching again, but he ordered his troops into the APC.

“We’re going to come at them together, from the front, we’re going to try and make our entrance on the same side they did, too much more damage and the whole tower will come toppling down on our heads, still, if they try anything tricky, GravestoneGravestone was the tanks name, “Fire a few shots into the upper levels.”

“With pleasure.” Gravestones commander said.

Tank nodded to himself and looked behind him to make sure the rest of Strill squad was done getting in, then he climbed down and closed the top hatch behind him. He didn’t have to drive now, he could sit in the commanders chair and watch the communications and radar. Issuing a couple simple orders, Tank let the others know to get moving, there was little time to waste now.

The APC got moving, the tank took a position behind it, letting those that knew where they were going lead the way. Tank wasn’t overly worried about running over local landspeeds, street signs and garbage cans, he let the armor mow over the lot of it.

Anticipation gripped Tank, his weapon was reloaded, a pilfered E-11, his body was tense, the humidity in the APC was causing him to sweat. He couldn’t wait to fly through the top hatch and finally fire another shot in anger. This would be a good battle, a glorious battle. It had been too long since he’d had a battle worth fighting and he would enjoy this one fully, win or lose.

*BOOM* *BOOM* Two bursts, close together, thundering enough to sound inside the APC.

“THE TOWER!” someone yelled.

Tank had enough time to swivel to the view ports and watch the  next two explosions sound and the tower twist slightly on it’s foundation before leaning and begin to descend upon him, two round from the tank fired through the upper the levels as the building neared them, but all this did was cut the thing in half, the larger bottom half crashed onto the APC first, resounding within and knocking all those cowering inside onto the ground, the second half hit less than a moment later, with much crunching and banging as the various pieces of communications equipment rattled down on top of them.

“Holy shit.” Tank breathed after a moment.

He climbed out of the APC through the top hatch, pushing rubble and equipment off and looked around. All around him was devastation, the devastation of a true war. The tower had not only fallen upon them, but upon many other buildings as well, crushing them beneath its bulk.

Tank laughed, “Destroy your victory to eliminate the enemy’s.” Tank laughed again, “Lets get going, if we can’t get the APC out we abandon it.”

Rell had waited. He had waited as long as he safely could and then waited some more. He had felt his gut wrench as he had left the collapsing building without Kartov or Zeff. He knew he should have done something, but he didn't.

Now he stood on the roof of the building near the now collapsed building and looked at the rubble. He whipped out his binoculars and gazed at the now covered APC of the New Republic.

"Damn." he said, noticing that several of the troopers were still alive. However, he also noticed that several of the troopers were missing.

At least we got a few of the bastards. Rell thought, his mind returning to his squad leader. He was a good leader, even if he was sometimes an ass.

One of the other troopers brought Rell back to the present.

"Uh, Rell? Take a look at the Republic troopers again and tell me what you see." Rell, somewhat confused, brought up his binoculars again to look at the troopers.

His eyes were first drawn to the APC, still covered in rubble, but after a few seconds he noticed something else. The tank was coming around the corner of the building, unharmed by the fallen tower. Rell felt his blood run cold.

"We need to get out of here." Rell said finally, looking at the other troopers. They nodded, eager to get away from the destruction of the tower. They quickly gathered up their equipment and proceeded to the streets, keeping to the shadows.

They bobbed and weaved in and out of alleys like they had done when they had first approached the tower. The only difference now was that their movements were more erratic and they were jumpy now. The possibility of the tank coming up behind them had made sure they were all on edge.

As they approached the city limits, Rell looked back at the skyline, now slightly more empty with the absence of the communication tower. He paused, slightly wishing there was more he could have done for Kartov and Zeff. Then, he disappeared with the rest of the squad out of the city.

Zeff’s ears were ringing from the detonation and fall of the tower. Somehow he had survived this catastrophic event. He was able to move some, but the debris around him limited his movement drastically. He had no idea whether or not his squad leader had made it out or if he was even alive. He decided to make an attempt at making contact with his squad via com-link.

“This is Zeff, anyone read me? Sergeant?” The line remained silent for minutes. He assumed that all the debris around him was hindering his signal. He began to work himself out of the debris. The duracrete and durasteel beams were extremely heavy. He had to rest often to catch his breath.

The ringing in his ears fooled him a number of times into thinking that someone had spoken. Each time he paused and attempted to make contact again, but still got no answer. Eventually, he made it to the point where he assumed that it was just his mind playing tricks on him and began to ignore it.

As he progressed upwards through the rubble, debris was easier to move and his ears quit ringing. He heard the same voice he had heard earlier. This was the first time in nearly ten minutes that he had acknowledged it.

“This is Lance Corporal Proidio Zeff, do you read me?”

“Great…alive…Kartov here…”

This was an upheaval for Zeff’s moral. His sergeant was alive, but his com-link sounded as if it was damaged. “Sir! Are you injured?”

“Ye…climbed out…” The transmissions were chopped but gave Zeff a basic idea as to Kartov’s thoughts.

Zeff redoubled his efforts to get to the surface. It took him only a few more minutes to break the surface. Once he was top side he tried to make contact again.

“Sergeant Kartov, do you read me?”

“Yes, I take it you were unable to hear all of what I said, which is most unfortunate.”

“Sir?”

“I’ve been taken into custody by the New Republic and they have sent two troopers to your location. I tried to tell you to stop trying to make contact. I’m sorry.”

Zeff looked about the fell landscape. When he turned around, there were the two soldiers that Kartov had spoken of. They already had their weapons drawn and aimed at his chest. He did not even bother to make a move for his weapon. He willingly tossed his hands into the air and followed their lead back to the rest of their squad.

They three negotiated the debris ridden terrain at a moderate clip. In a matter of minutes, they were at the imperial APC. There was Kartov held under close surveillance. Zeff was escorted and placed next to the Banshee squad leader. They had no idea as to what was coming, but they had a good feeling that the remainder of the squad had escaped without any harm coming to them.

Sergeant Tank exhaled, breathing out a cloud of acrid smoke into the already clouded air. Despite the airborne particles of duracrete and melted metal, the slowness of his next breath suggested that he was enjoying it as much as he could. Someone nearby coughed twice, then sniffed loudly. Turning, Tank wasn't surprised to see fellow Squad Leader Crick "Old Lady" Mason.

Their rank and position were the only two things the two men had in common: Crick Mason had been unanimously voted "Officer most likely to flee the battlefield" by his fellow Squad Leaders in training and Strill Squad was a joke throughout the Republic ground forces. Tank stood almost a head taller than the diminutive human, and had once broken the man's nose back in basic training. With that in mind, he smiled broadly, showing stained teeth.

"Yes, Mason?"

The omission of rank was conspicuous, and the Strill Squad Leader bristled.

"Look here, Sergeant," he spluttered. "My Strills just saved your collective asses, so how about you get off your rear, stop smoking that bloody cigar and do something useful? If it wasn't for you Chimeras, we'd still have that tower."

Tank didn't even bother dignifying the rant with a reply. Instead, he grabbed the short little man by the front of his fatigues and slammed him, none too gently, into the metal side of the APC. The nearby troopers, a mix of Trills and Tank's men, half-turned, but didn't intervene. Crick began to splutter, outraged, until Tank looked him in the eyes. Deliberately, he spoke, his face less than an inch away from Mason's darting, widened eyes.

"Listen to me, Mason, and listen well. Your Strills did not 'save our collective asses'. Your Strills would have saved our collective asses if they had arrived a unit ago when the Imps sent in their heavy support. Because your Strills 'failed to save our collective asses'," he paused for effect, letting the bitter irony in his words sink into the quivering sack of flesh he was shoving against the carrier. "five of my troopers are dead. When you can give me my troopers back, Mason, then you can moan about doing something useful."

Tank let the man drop, then took a half step back. He almost turned away, then turned around again.

"As for the tower, our orders stated that it was to be destroyed if we were unable to hold it. All the Imps did was fulfill our objective for us and destroy the only stronghold they had. We have numbers and vehicle support, Mason. Despite your best efforts, we can still win this."

With that parting shot delivered, Tank turned and stormed off to the other side of the APC. Despite his calm exterior, the Squad Leader was consumed by a turmoil of emotion. Mason might be a snivelling, useless coward, but his remarks had stung. The possiblity that he might have done more for his squad, been more careful, given his orders a little faster haunted him. He had known this day might one day come, but he had never expected it to actually happen. Over half of his Chimeras were gone, because of his failures. The Sergeant tapped the side of his helmet twice, shaking his head as he did so. He could dwell on his failures later. For now, he had to focus on keeping the rest of his men alive.

Tank saw two black suited figures sitting on the ground with their hands held together behind their heads and surrounded by four Republic troopers. His scowl widened. One, his armour decorated with the insignia of a Sergeant, looked up as the Chimera leader approached. Tank looked into the man's thin, half-closed eyes, noticed the thick jaw and the scars etched into the sallow skin. Somehow, he knew this man, helpless though he was, was the one who had killed so many of his men.

It all made a kind of perverse, deep sense in his mind. This man had murdered his troopers, and now there would be a reckoning. Finally, one of the guards noticed Tank, perhaps also seeing the grim expression and the open holster.

"Yeah, Sarge, what can we do.."

In one fluid gesture, Sergeant Tank drew his sidearm, deactivated the safety and emptied the clip into the Imperial officer's head. Clouds of vaporized blood drifted up into the air as the executed trooper fell like a discarded puppet. The other prisoner, who couldn't have been older than Tank's own son, screamed and desperately tried to wriggle out of his bonds. Dispassionately, Tank pulled the trigger twice more, and the pleas abruptly stopped. He let the gun drop.

"Sergeant!"

Tank turned his head, and there was pain in his eyes.

"The bastard killed my men. There was no way I could allow him to live. They'd have been a liability. Survival comes ahead of the rules."

The nearest of the quartet of guards hesitated, then nodded. The youngest looked like he was going to be sick, and his eyes kept on moving to the pair of bodies lying in a comingled pool of blood.

The Sergeant stopped for a moment, then pressed on.

"We're going to wipe out the rest of these vermin, so check your weapons and come round to the other side."

The troopers stared, then began to move. One of the four began to speak, and the others couldn't help but agree.

"Man, some days I really hate this job, you know?"

The Corporal in charge of the group nodded, then gestured at the carrier. No words were needed.

Rell breathed in deeply. Getting out of the city had been painfully slow and made him jumpy. Now, outside the city in the large forests that dotted the landscape, he felt more relaxed, seemingly safe among the large trunks and branches of the trees.

Rell looked at the other three troopers with him. They all seemed relaxed as well, one of them even jogging with his gun held in one hand towards the ground.

They had been jogging for what seemed like hours and there was still no sign of an Imperial ship anywhere. Rell knew it was around the area he was in, he just had no idea as to where it was exactly. So, the had committed to blindly jogging around the forest, hoping to stumble upon the ship. So far, they had found no trace of it.

Rell stopped, placing an arm against a nearby tree to catch his breath. The other troopers did the same, starting up some small talk to pass the time. Rell knew it was a ploy to how they really felt.

We need to find that ship and get off this rock. He thought, frowning at the thought of being trapped on this planet with New Republic troopers just waiting to pounce on their Imperial figures.

Suddenly, he heard a low, grumbling sound coming from somewhere out in the forest. Rell froze, his gut clenching into a knot.

That's not an animal... He thought, his mind racing. Then he remembered the APC.

"Get into the trees! Quickly!" Rell said, already climbing the tree he was leaning on. The other troopers, dumbfounded looks on their faces, followed suit and were quickly into the foliage.

Soon, the sounds of trees being knocked over reached their ears. Rell tried to relax himself but found that he was breaking into a cold sweat.

If they find us here... He stopped the thought, shaking his head. It was too hard to think about.

However, after about an hour of cracks and booms in the forest, silence returned. Rell sighed, hoping they wouldn't come back.

That was close.

Abel was sitting in an akward position in the tree, making the branch he was sitting on an uncomfortable place to be. He prayed for the APC to pass through quickly so he wouldnt have to undure this any longer.

Finally after what seemed like forever, Rell called, "OK. I think their gone. But we have to keep moving."

Abel cleared his throat. Rell turned back to look at him. "Something wrong?"

"Well, i was just thinking that we have been at this almost a full day now since we first got here. I think we should set up a base camp. From here we can send out a short range signal on a secure Imperial channel. Hopefully the Imperial ship will pick up on it."

Abel could see that Rell was mulling over the two options. Rell didn't want to stop because of the constant threat of NR troopers patrolling the forest. They had already come close to the captured APC, and the last thing they needed was to be mowed down by a giant tank in their sleep. But Rell also was tempted by the offer of much needed rest.

"Besides," Abel added,"we wouldnt be much of a fight against the rebels if we were dozing off inside our helmets. And the nights on this planet are pretty long..."

Rell nodded, and from inside his helmet, Abel smilled. "OK," Rell gave in. We will just continue up this slope and set up a base there. That way it will be harder for NR troopers to sneak up on us, and even harder for an APC to roll up there."

No one tried to hide their pleasure at the prospect of some shut eye. With that they started to trek their way up the hill. Moonlight poured through the trees and from hidden places all around them they could hear the activity of night life creatures.

When they reached the top of the hill, Abel was pleased to see a nice little ditch. This will be perfect. Abel thought to himself. Pulling out a long sheet of camo net that he carried with him, Abel set himself to work, building a makeshift tent that would be able to pack four people in a tight squeeze. Well its better than sleeping comfortable out in the open.

Abel had one of the troopers set up the small portable communication box that would send out their distress signal. The other trooper busied himself digging up little barriers around their camp. Sharpening some of the branches that were scattered around the campsite, the trooper also set these make-shift spears that pointed outward, to ward off any unwanted predators. Rell was sitting on a big rock, preparing two of the ration packs, which they would have to split between the four of them, seeing as they didnt know when the Imperial ship would get to them.

After a quick dinner consisting of ome kind of dry pasta, Abel looked around at the camp they had created within a short hour. Standing up, Rell said to the rest of the troopers,"Get some rest. Ill take watch first."

Knowing that Rell would probably stand guard all night if no one else switched out with him, Abel added curtly,"I'll take the next shift in two hours."

Rell nodded, and went to the edge of the camp, laying in a prone position facing down hill. While the other stormtroopers immediately went to sleep under the camo net, Abel set an alarm inside his helmet to wake him up in two hours. Then Abel promptly fell into the blissful embrace of Sleep...

The inside of the APC was stuffy and almost unbearably hot, but no one complained. The inch thick armour between them and the enemy more than made up for the discomfort, especially because of the many casualties the Chimera had sustained from rockets.

Most of the two squads were in the troop compartment, while Mason and Tank were up front, just behind the captured APC's pilots. Their tank went ahead, its reinforced front plowing through trees and undergrowth, clearing a path for the lighter troop transport. Probe droids hovered ahead of the convoy, constantly swivelling to look for tracks. Some of the Republic scouts could have done the job just as well, but Tank had quashed that suggestion. He had no intention of losing any more troopers to the Empire today.

Crik Mason cleared his throat, then spoke to the APC's pilot.

"Tell Gravestone to halt, then stop here."

He then glanced at Tank, as though for confirmation. After their little confrontation earlier, the Strill Squad Leader had been surprisingly quiet. That was fine with Tank, but if Mason was too worried about him to command his squad the result could be another bloodbath. Still, the "Old Lady" aside, things were going well. They had ridiculous numerical superiority, heavy vehicle support, and the Imps had lost their sergeant.

There seemed to be no way for the Republic to lose, but if there was one thing Tank had learned from this mission it was that a reversal of fortune could occur at any time.

With that in mind, he confirmed the order. The belemoth heavy vehicle came to a stop, followed moments later by the troop carrier. The hatch hissed open, and the Strills poured out. Troopers set up sensors, powered-up turret grids, and began to make a base in the clearing.

Tank watched the squads work for a moment, then tapped a button on his comlink. Containers opened, and probe droids drifted out, hanging lazily in the air as though waiting for orders. He tapped a second button, and they flew in all directions, vanishing into the gloom and foliage.

If the Imperials were still out there somewhere, the droids would find them. Then, the Strills and Chimeras would take them out, and their mission would finally be complete.

Seconds, then minutes, passed. A few of the troopers began to relax, joking and talking. The older ones, and the surviving Chimeras, however, simply waited, their hands on their weapons and ready to go.

The datapad began to shriek, and Tank reactivated it. One of the droids had found a group of heat signatures, as well as a radio signal. The video feed was low quality, but Tank saw the crimson energy bolt that abruptly ended the transmission and knew the fugitives were there. He began to shout orders, and the squads piled back into the vehicles. This time, the Chimera Squad leader piloted the AAT tank. He wanted to do this himself.

The pair plowed through jungle, leaving chaos in their wake. Suddenly, energy bolts began to strike the AAT, harmlessly bouncing off the vehicle's thick armour plating. A volley of point-defense laser cannon fire silenced the autoturrets, and the haphazard barricades were smashed to pieces by the tank's thick nose.
Tank transferred the main cannon's fire control to his station and searched for targets in the gloom. He saw nothing, but the vehicle's sensors confirmed the presence of a transmitting sensor array in the area above. He adjusted the angle slightly, then fired.

The pair of missiles streaked up, then detonated in the middle of the camp. The surrounding area was showered with dropplets of mud and molten metal, but there was no scream to indicate that hostiles had been caught in the explosion. The slope was steep, and the thick mud didn't help, but Tank wrestled the tank to the top. There, he found the charred remains of a com relay and what appeared to be a tent, but no bodies. Scanning the clearing, the Republic sergeant saw several pairs of tracks leading deeper into the forest, and frowned. Of course, they would have run; any sentient would have known they were coming from the racket. Still, the footprints were still fresh. Still frowning, Tank opened a channel to his counterpart.

"They fled."

Mason seemed unconcerned, and it showed in his voice.

"So? They have nowhere to run."

Beep! Beep! Beep!

Blinking, Abel woke to the sound of his helmets alarm. Groaning, he raised himself up and looked around. Everything was quite. Just as he suspected, Rell hadn't waken him up.

Standing up, Abel waked over to where Rell was still lying down, watching any movement that he would rustle the bushes and stir up the leaves.

"I see you forgot to wake me up."

Rell, still not turning to face, simply replied, "Well there was no sort of disturbance, so i figured i could go on for another hour or so." Despite him being farely new, Abel had noticed that Rell was trying a little to hard to fill in the seargents boots. Still, he knew that this was his way to cope with the loss of Kartov and Zeff.

In the silence that followed, both Abel and Rell turned to face a distant humming sound. A few seconds later, a black scouting droid floated out from behind a small bush. It took only a split second for the two of them to realize it, but before the droid could turn around to retreat into the bush, Abel had drawn his blaster and shot it right in the middle of his round little head.

"That must have been one of the NR scout droids. No doubt the NR troopers know where we are now. We have to get out of here now." Rell got up and went over to the tent and woke up the other two troopers. Meanwhile, Abel pulled out one of his flares and stuck it in the ground.

"Come on, Abel. We're leaving." Rell said impatiently.

"Coming." Before he left, Abel pulled the string on the little tube, and he could see a small glow of light coming from beneath the dirt.

Jogging back to where the others where waiting for him, Abel explained. "The APC tanks they have dont have a window for them to see out of. They depend on thermal vision to see their targets. Hopfully, if they simply decide to blow up the camp, it will seem as if we are still their." Rell nodded and then together, the four of them continued on deeper into the forest.

A few minutes into their jog, they heard a loud explosion, and when the looked back they, could see a fading flash. Abel had a sinking feeling in his stomach. He though how hard his men had worked to build their little base. And all in vane...

They solemly turned around again and continued to jog, when they heard a low rumbling. Looking up, they saw a large transport ship slowly descend on them, silloueted by the moonlight. By the time it came down close enough to make out the markings on the ships hull, they instantly recognized the symbol.

It was an Imperial drop ship.

“Kartov, right?”

“Shut up rebel.”

“Shut up? That’s all? Kartov, I have not enjoyed myself this much in a long time.” Tank leaned close to the restrained squad leader, “It has been a long time since I had anyone to fight worth the time and energy I put into it.”

“Just a bloodthirsty thug.”

“And you’re any different, we’re both warriors, made and conditioned to fight and fight, and to what end? It is the glory of the battle, the honor of the fight that keeps us going, win, lose, it doesn’t matter.”

“You’re wrong, we’re not the same, what are you? Some play thing of the republic? No more than a terrorist, fighting battles, honor, glory. These things don’t exist in battle. I am a soldier, I protect the peace, the weak. Generally from warriors.”

“And what have the weak done to deserve this devotion of yours? Cried a little? Moaned? Maybe bore your children? The weak deserve their lot in life, they exist to be hunted by the strong.”

“I am not some rabid animal. People are not just Kath hounds and their prey. We will never get anywhere chasing our tails like that. It’s people like you that keep this galaxy splintered, keep the pain flowing.”

“You’re right. There is nothing more exciting than the sound of blaster bolts and the feel of the enemies bones crushed beneath your boots. There is not higher ecstasy then to fight an enemy who can make you fear for your life. But that brings me to what I want to know. Are you the best of your faction? Are you all they have to offer?”

“Ha! I am good, but we are not even the best. If you think this battle was hard, if you think this was a challenge, you have not yet seen the power of the Vast Empire. If you decide to cross us you won’t last the first skirmish. I sincerely hope you try you piece of shit. I’m done with this conversation.”

Tank didn’t answer, his face was hidden in a shadow in the dim interior of the APC, but any that could see could would bear witness to the horrifying grin spread across his face, the grin of a hungry wolf, about to taste fresh blood.

Tank picked both the prisoners up by the arms and guided them to door, he pushed them outside and took off the restraints. “Run, today is not your day to die, my gift to you will be a death in battle, you deserve more than the pathetic life of a prisoner. In the future I will offer no quarter, I just wanted to meet you.”

“What do you think you are doing!” Crick Mason screamed as the prisoners nodded and ran.

Tanks arm lashed out and gripped the other man by the throat. “They were my prisoners, to do with as I please.” Tank tossed him back inside, then stepped out into the air, standing on the rubble, he lit a cigarette.

The rest of chimera followed him out, and Olias approached. “You’re not planning on going back, are you?”

“You know, it’s true what they say, you never do really quit.” Tank said, inhaling deeply.

“We’re your men, Tank, we’re with you.” Olias said, the others voiced their agreement.

Tank smiled. “Alright then, lets move out.” Tank turned and began walking, the remains of chimera falling in behind him. And as the distance grew between them and the APC a large explosion tore the vehicle in half. None turned, but out of everyone sight, Tank smiled.
