Combat Engineer
Level 1: Electrical Systems
Story 1: Basic Electronics/Wiring

Beep…..Beep……Beep….Drakar reached over and slapped his alarm clock’s snooze button.  He knew that it was 0700 hours and that he needed to get up and eat something before his first day of class, but he was just so tired from the training drills completed the night before with Jester squad.  He managed to use his right arm to push his large muscular torso off the bed and it was then that he realized how sore he was from training.  Before getting up, he rubbed his head and neck trying to wake himself up.

He grabbed his towel and his razor and headed for the shower.  Turning the shower knob, the water immediately came on.

“Cold, just like normal” , said Drakar.  “What’s a man gotta do to get a warm shower for once?”

After he finished drying off he went to the mirror to groom himself.  He shaved his face and the sides of his head giving himself a standard military haircut.
After finishing getting ready he headed to get some chow in the Mess Hall.

“Mmmm……Gruel. Does a body and mind good” , he said to the server.

“It is the perfect combination of amino acids, carbohydrates, and fats that allow you to perform at the highest level” said the server almost snobbish.

As Drakar ate he looked around the Mess Hall only to find three other people in it.  Most other Imperials were still asleep because only two specialty classes were having class so early in the morning, Combat Engineer, and the Medics.  The rest of the soldiers were still worn out from the party that took place after all squads finished formation and tactical drilling.  One of the people inside the hall was a pale looking man who seemed to be really nervous and paranoid about something, the other two was a scrawny looking man and a beautiful blonde haired woman sitting together and chatting about something that seemed to be funny to the both of them.

Drakar walked down the hallway looking at his datapad trying to figure out what room he was to report to for his electrical wiring class……….(Basic electrical Systems/Wiring) room 1456.  His heavy boots rang clearly in the empty hallway as he walked calmly down it toward his destination.  Upon reaching the classroom he read the door and it said, “Professor McArthur” and he pressed the button for the door to open and walked inside.  Behind him he heard it close with a hydraulic hiss, and the other students in the room looked up to see who was going to be joining them.

“Greetings Imperials, and I would like to welcome you to your first step in becoming a Combat Engineer.  As you may know, this is one of the most common fields of specialty, but do not think that it is going to be a blow off one.  If you prove yourself worthy today, you will be dismissed and do not have to return until next week when we start the next section.  You all have your books and materials needed in front of you, I want you to wire that circuit board so that whenever you finish the red light on the right side lights up and makes a buzzing sound.  I am prepared to stay here all day if I need to in order for everyone of you to have sufficient time to finish this somewhat difficult circuit board.  If you mess up and catch your board on fire, manage the best you can with what you have.  Do not ask for another one.  Ready…………Go.”

Drakar looked down at the tangled wires of all sorts of colors and scratched his head.

“Your dad taught you the very basics, you know what to do and how to do it, now just put it into action” he thought to himself.

Opening the book to the first chapter he began to read to himself.  After about forty-five minutes of reading and making notes of the section he began to arrange the wires by colors, red and black.

“Ok generally all basic materials are 120-volt circuit runs.” reading his notes inside his head.

Circuits came relatively easy to him because he had worked with them before back home in Corellia with his father.
Looking down at the circuit board it had numerous slots numbering from A1-D-7.  First he connected the red wires from B2 to C2, D2 to D3, D3 to C3.

“So far nothing had gone wrong”, Drakar thought.

His thoughts were immediately broken when one of the females in the class began to scream because he circuit caught on fire.  The professor jumped up grabbing the fire-extinguisher and ran over to where the flames were and put them out.

“Johnson……you have been in this same class for a week and a half.  You either need to go be something else or find someone to help you, otherwise you are going to fail”, said McArthur.

Drakar could tell that Johnson was trying not to pull out her blaster and shoot her superior in the back as he walked away and motioned to get her attention.

“Hey, why don’t you come over here….and we can go over what you did wrong, together”, he said.

She nodded in agreement and cracked a little smile out of the corner of her mouth.  “I’m Dreitha by the way, and you are?” she asked.

“Drakar, nice to meet you.  Are you in a squad or are you fresh out of the Academy?” asked Drakar.

“I just graduated from the Academy, how about you?” Johnson asked.

“I am a member of Jester Squad” said Drakar.

After about an hour of working with Dreitha, Drakar finally figured out what she had done to cause he system to spark and catch on fire.  After getting her back on the right track he told her to let him know if she needed anymore help in which she nodded in agreement.  He looked down and noticed that he had only just begun to work his system, so he riffled through his notes that were scattered everywhere and got them reorganized so that he could finish his work.

“Now for the black wires…..” he thought.  “A1 to A2, B1 to B2, C1 to D1, D1 to D3 &D2......”

He continued this pattern until finally he had place all of the black wires in their respective places, in which Drakar flipped the switch at the top of the board and the light came on and the buzzer sounded.

The professor looked up almost surprised saying, “Wow, Drakar, I think that might be a record time………usually this circuit board takes up to four and half hours to finish, but you did in under four.”

Drakar smiled to himself a little bit knowing he had done a job well done, thanks to his father’s explanations long ago.  He stood up looking at Johnson who was still struggling, but was starting to manage to work it all out.  Drakar gave her a slight nod of acknowledgement and walked to the front of the classroom towards McArthur.

“Very good, my young student.  You have proven yourself worthy of earning yourself a passing grade for this class.  I will see you bright and early next week at 0800 hours for your second class” said the professor.

Both men gave a salute and Drakar turned and walked out of the classroom returning to the barracks where the rest of his squad was.

OOC:
Well written Drakar, and I see you also understand the basics of wiring. Just three things, firstly, paragraph layout is fickle, it was really hard reading the spec story squashed like that, second thing, I caught one or two typos. Just fix your paragraph layout however, and you may continue to the next one. On a last note, names such as McArthur and Johnson is very common earth names which kinda cuts through your SW reality, you dont have to edit it however, and Johnson crying? I doubt that a trooper would feel like crying except if on battle field, Drills usually teached them to be stable and die-hard characters But thats just my own opinion, well done however, fix those paragraphs and drop me a PM.

Level 1: Electrical Systems
Story 2: Electrical Systems

Drakar looked down at his datapad noticing that instead of just having one class today he had to go to the lecture, which would explain what they would be doing in the afternoon at the exam in the hanger.  As he finished his morning regiment of getting ready, he saw Dreitha walking down the hall away from the Mess Hall.  Aparently she had just finished eating and was going to get to the class room early to be sure that she could get the seat she wanted.

“How’s it going?, I take it that you passed your bsaic class?” asked Drakar.

“Yeah, I had to stay there until 1430 hours” she said embarrasingly.

“Well hopefully we both get through with this test early, for one so you can redeem yourself” ,he remarked.

As she nodded in agreement he walked away heading to find some gruel before class.  He read the notice at the counter that said “Due to extreme amount of complaining , Breakfast would now be served warm.”

Drakar thought to himself, “Yes....., I think this is the first time any meal has been warm the whole time I’ve been in the Empire.”

His mind wondered back to his days back in Coronet City with his mother’s cooking.  His day dream stopped when the server handed him his plate and yelled, “Next”.

In the classroom, he sat down at his usual desk and pulled out his notepad and pen to get ready to take notes for the exam that would be later that day.

“Good morning class, here on the table I have several items that you would be around on the battlefield.  As a Combat Engineer you will be dealing with mines, datapads, security alarms, and detection devices.  One other skill you may find useful as a Combat Engineer is the ability to rewire an enemy vehicle.  This topic is not discussed in your book, but if you would like I could show you in a more hands on situation.”

Everyone nodded in agreement.  “All of these things will be detrimental to your squads success and your survival in the field” said the professor.

“Now we are getting into the real stuff,” thought Drakar.

After studying for around thirty minutes and listening to the teachers lecture about the various items and the class was dismissed, Drakar took the time to inspect the different systems before he left the class for the afternoon.

He picked up each item inspecting how each of them would work and what made each of them tick.  He noticed that the items were placed in certain order for a reason which intrigued Drakar.

“I wonder if they range from left to right in difficulty” he pondered.

He left the class room clearly knowing what he would have to be able to do this afternoon at the exam.  He went back to his bunk in Jester Hall to put away his things.

After grabbing some lunch he headed to the training facility to blow off some stress.  Most of the rooms were filled with soldiers doing various forms of martial arts, Drakar wanted to do some weight training and then work on his Echani style of fighting.  In the weight room he worked on his upper body strength starting with Bench, followed by shoulders press, followed by seated row,  lastly followed by Curls and dips.  He then headed toward the bag room where he would practice his Echani techniques against a punching bag.

After cleaning himself up once again he looked down at his datapad to see where he needed to go to do his exam, and it read Hanger 17.  He walked down the busy hallway full of other students rushing to their respect classes, trying not to be late.  Drakar noticed that most other students were nervous, but his dad had always taught him to stay calm in any situation and sure enough he was relatively calm.  He walked into the hanger where the rest of the class was starting to gather.

“Your exam will begin after this short explanation.  Today you will be completing your first true test of your knowledge of electricity systems.  In your test you will be having to dismantle four mines, disable two security sweepers, working on a broken datapad, and your final part will be rewiring this broken AT-PT.  If you break anything, anything explodes, catches on fire, get electrocuted more than five times, you fail.  There will be no make ups this week, you will have to re-register for this class starting next week.  Any questions? No, then your test starts now”, Grumbled the professor.

Drakar walked to his part of the hanger which was made to look like a jungle in order to give it a real life mission feel.  He looked around at the various things on the ground and began to work starting with the datapad.  He popped open the back of the datapad and began to inspect its system.  He noticed that two red wires were intertwined with two other blue wires.  Drakar took the wires out and began to lay them out.  He reconnected the wires to their coded ports and replaced the back causing the datapad causing it to spring to life.

Once it turned on he looked the screen reading the message that was written on it.  “This datapad includes the system layouts for the rest of the items for this test, you may use this as a guide to check your work.”

Drakar knew what he was doing with most of the items because of the training he had done with his father, except for the AT-PT part of the test.

Drakar began to work on the various other items, easily tearing through each individual item.  Once he made it to the mines he got down close to the ground so that he would not be detected.  Drakar army crawled his way up to the device and popped the back off with his knife.  Inside he noticed that a yellow wire was twisted, he reached his knife into the device knowing what he must do to disable it.  He turned his head slightly, acting like it would protect him any from the blast if it went off.  He flicked his wrist causing his blade of his knife to raise, slicing the twisted wire in two.  After doing this he heard a beeping sound slowly fade away after slowing down.

A sigh of relief came over Drakar as he knew that he had cut the right wire.  Following the same procedure for the rest of the mines, the repeated beeping sounds eventually stopped altogether.  Now the only thing he had left was to rewire the AT-PT.  He headed over to where the machine lay with beads of sweat dripping from his head due to the extreme amount heat in the room from other students various machines exploding.

He walked around the machine slowly inspecting it up and down.  Drakar found the panel box on the side of the body of beast in which he easily pried open with his knife.  After doing several rewiring tasks within the machine he only had one wire left.  He found the electrical port in which it needed to be placed and reclosed the box.

He expected it to stand up, or come to life somehow, but it never did.  He checked with the datapad he had found and found where the problem was.  So Drakar reopened the box and found what the problem was according to the datapad and he had switched two wires and he needed to flick the breaker next to where he had been working.  After doing what was necessary he flipped the breaker the machine gained full strength and then stood up and sprung to life.  The noises followed it turning on filled the room.
Drakar’s AT-PT was the first one of anyone in his class to come to life.
The professor walked over to where Drakar was standing and saluted him.

“Job well done, Drakar”, claimed his professor.  “You have excelled today and in this class, you are dismissed until the next level of class.” "You are one of the only students to figure out that the datapad was an aide to your cause, I commend you for it."

“Thank you sir, I am grateful for your excellent teaching” , remarked Drakar.

Both men saluted one another and Drakar walked out of the Hanger knowing he was well on his way to becoming a great Combat Engineer.

OOC:
Passed and well done. I like your little breakfast comment early in the post:P The fact that you were assigned different types of items are really nice as well because variety is important.Sorry it took me so long to grade

Level 2: Fortifications and Defense
Story 1: Field Fortifications

Drakar shuttered as he woke up, as he sat up he rubbed his eyes trying to make them come into focus.

As he glanced around the room, he noticed the old worn down sink and walked over to it and twisted the knobs.  Out splashed a stream of brownish colored water that made Drakar think to himself, “Man I am ready to get out of this bunker and out on a mission”.

After showering he walked down to the Mess Hall for some quick chow before heading off to class.  As he walked through the double doors he quickly scanned the morning menu.  “Hmmm…….let me guess, gruel?” asked Drakar.  While he ate he read his datapad, which had his new class syllabus.

“You will attend our two hour lecture about field fortifications and then will report to the west side target area for testing of concepts.”

Drakar grinned to himself because not only was he continuing in his father’s footsteps, but also he was finally getting into the curriculum where everything is set in real life.

His heavy boots rang clearly in the empty hallway as he walked calmly down it toward his destination.  Upon reaching the classroom he read the door and it said, “Professor Okafor””Field Fortifications and Demolitions”then pressed the button for the door to open and walked inside.

As the door slid open, Drakar stepped inside noticing various posters of explosives and fortifications plastered on the walls.

“Lance Corporal Drakar…..please pick up the datapad on my desk and quickly take your seat” , said Okafor.

He was a very broad shouldered man, much like Drakar himself, but he carried himself with the upmost class.  As Drakar settled into his seat the teacher began to speak.

“Alright so you think you want to be a Combat Engineer, hm…., well let me tell just what that job entails.  When your squad or whatever needs something to fire safely behind, you are charged with the task”, proclaimed Okafor.

“Now begin reading your datapad about the various types and I will start to lecture shortly.”

“One of most important things needed to know about fortifications is thickness.  Until you advance later on in your profession you will not know how to accomplish this using materials such as metal, but in this class you will learn how to use the environment as your materials.”

After reading and simultaneously listening to the teacher for two hours, the class was dismissed to grab a bite to eat before having to go outside around 1430 hours.

The mess hall was buzzing with students by now, it being the lunch hour rush.  As Drakar approached the counter the server reached out and plopped the brownish mashed potatoes on his tray with a squish.

“I’ll take some steak and beans please……..” said Drakar sarcastically.  Without missing a beat the server said, “How about the stew…?” proclaimed the server. “Just what I always wanted cold stew and watery mash potatoes”, thought Drakar.

When he finished eating he put his tray up and looked at his datapad which told him that he had 5 minutes to get to the practice area or he would be tardy.

Upon reaching the Simulation zone, which was already started,  Drakar noticed the 5 meters of grass and the 10-20 meters of random holes in the ground leading up to a stone wall 50 meters from where he was standing.

“Drakar,” yelled the professor.

“You’re up first, show us watch you got.  You have 20 minutes to prepare for an ambush before it hits.  All you have is your E-11, four grenades, and this shovel.  Their blasters are set to stun so if you get shot you will not really die, but you will feel the extreme amount of pain associated with being killed.”

“Thickness, and depth….”thought Drakar as he began to dig.  “If I can just do that I should be able to protect myself enough until time is up.”

After digging for about 15 minutes, Drakar had a ditch that was around 3 meters wide and 4 meters deep.

He could feel the sweat running down his face inside his helmet.

With only around 4 minutes until he was ambushed he decided to spend the last remaining moments preparing himself physically and mentally for the onslaught that was about to occur.

He could hear the men coming in the distance because they were screaming as they closed in on his position.

Drakar decided to get a gauge of how close they were and how many people were coming at him so he slowly raised his head to wear the visor was at ground level revealing the realistic planet surface.
As he counted he placed his right hand on the trigger of his gun preparing to fight.

As he sunk back down into the ditch he could feel his heart pounding from the anxiety of battle, which he had not felt in a while.

He reached down with his left hand and unclipped a grenade from his belt.  He heard the stomping of boots closing in on him and he slowly lobbed it over the dirt wall and it landed just where he had hoped it would, sending 3 of the 7 soldiers flying back.

The rest of the soldiers jumped down into separate ditches trying to avoid being taken out at once like the first three.

Each of them popped out firing upon Drakar’s shield of dirt causing sand to constantly be falling on his helmet.  This constant attack kept chipping away at his shield causing it to slowly crumble around him.  Drakar decided to abandon his quick fortification in order to hurry up and end this fight, since it had already gone on for close to 45 minutes.

Just he was about to get up one of the soldiers tossed a grenade near the edge of his ditch causing it to become a crater, in which the three soldiers decided to rush at once.

By this time, Drakar had jumped back trying to avoid the blast and was covering his head.  When he realized that they were rushing one had already come over the top.  Drakar hit his feet and quickly firing a shot at the enemy’s leg causing him to fall on the ground.  Drakar kicked him in the head instantly killing him.

Immediately after kicking the last guy in the head, the next one jumped in and grabbed Drakar by the arm, catching him by surprise.  Drakar pulled his arm away immediately following it up with a left punch that threw him to the ground.  Without hesitation, Drakar shot him and climbed out of the hole just as the last one reached it causing them both to fall back into it.  They wrestled around for a second before Drakar finally wound up on top, in which Drakar quickly fired a shot right into his chest.

“Times-up, Drakar, your fortification failed.  Luckily, you survived, in this simulation.  If you had done that in a real situation you probably would have been shipped back in a box”, said the Teacher.  “But guess what, no one is ever able to get it right the first time.”

“Drakar, you pass and are permitted to continue on with your profession.  Good luck in all you do”, said Okafor.

He left the simulation beaming knowing that he was now ready for his next class.

COMMENTS: Hmm...I do rather enjoy this concept of failing the exam. It shows that we are not in god-mode all the time. I also liked the bit of character development you accomplished. Keep up the good work!

Story 2: Explosives Deployement

Boom…..was the sound of Drakar throwing his alarm clock across the room and smashing up against the steel wall.

As he came to so did the effects of the previous day’s intense workout and Drilling.  He rubbed his shoulders a little bit before walking over to his closet.  As he was getting dressed he noticed that his datapad was lit up, so he walked over to it and read what it said.

“Drakar, Please report to Professor Okafor’s class for a 30 minute lecture, which will be followed by a field test after a short break for lunch.

After he read the message he finished getting ready.  Once he was finished he grabbed his gear and headed out the door, stopping at the cafeteria for a quick breakfast.

As he was finishing his meal he looked at the clock on the wall and realized he was going to be late if didn’t hurry, so he left the mess hall and found the classroom and walked inside.

“Drakar, good to see you again. Now grab the datapad from my desk and start studying because this test won’t be as easy as the last one” said Okafor.

Drakar let out a small sigh before taking his seat because he had to work his butt off in the last one and it was definitely not a cake walk.

After about 10 minutes or so Okafor began to give minor points about how the test would take place later on.  He gave some tips about how many people would be attacking after a certain amount of time, what equipment they had, and where they would be going.

While he was talking Drakar’s eyes began to shift around the room looking at the different posters and objects that were around him.

He noticed that on the wall to his right was a picture of a base that had a huge hole in the wall.  This gave him an idea to try during his test.

As soon as he looked back at the professor he said, “You have fifteen minutes to do whatever you need, whether it be gather your things, or grab some chow.  The shuttle will leave on time, and we will not wait on you.”

Drakar got up and walked out with the rest of the class.

He knew that he only had ten minutes or so until he needed to head toward the terminal so he quickly headed toward the cafeteria for a bite to eat.

As soon as he walked in he immediately noted the long line, which would take the whole time, so he decided to head back to his room for some fruit he had in the cabinet.

While he was eating, he began to come up with a plan of action for his test that was about to happen. He figured it was better if he did it now so he would not be wasting time later.

After he finished coming up with a plan, he immediately headed for the shuttle because he did not want to have to repeat the class for missing it.

Once he arrived he checked in a got onboard.  As he was walking on he noticed that the shuttle was relatively empty.

“I guess some people got caught up in the lunch line”, thought Drakar as Okafor climbed onboard and closed the door behind him.

Once the shuttle landed he stepped off and put his helmet on.  His neck muscles were still a little sore from not being accustomed to the weight of it, having not been on a mission in a while.

In front of him was some very tall trees with leaves the size of a fist and several abandoned buildings crumbling from the vegetation surrounding it, followed by a hill to the left.

“Drakar, it is your turn. Your time starts now.”

His mind started racing, and he sprang into action.  “First I need to set these charges on this building here and while this crumbles I can go start raking the leaves.”

As he was raking and placing the leaves in two big trash bags, he heard an explosion followed by a very loud noise as the concrete support beam fell over into several large pieces.

After finishing getting a sufficient amount of leaves he headed back over towards the crumbled concrete.  He quickly wrapped several chains around it and began to drag the pieces toward the right so that he could protect his flank and force the ambush to come from the front.

“I better set some timed charges here, just in case they happen to make it through my field”, said Drakar looking at the building right next to the hill.  “I bet they will try and use this as cover”

By now sweat was dripping from his hair and he knew that he didn’t have much longer until his time of preparation ran out.

He quickly wired together several strands of rope and attached pinless grenades to them. The only thing keeping them from exploding was the rope holding the safety lever down. He made sure that the ropes would cover the area where the attack would come from and also made sure that he spaced the mines out in no particular pattern.

Once the ropes with grenades were set all that was left was to cover them with the leaves he had gotten.  It took him probably around five minutes or so to get all the leaves spread out so that it looked natural again and for him to get set for the ambush.

Once preparation time had run out, ten men came charging toward his location.  Out of the ten two men went running straight out onto the field and immediately were disposed of.

The next three were a little bit more careful and looked down at the leaves trying to see if there were more explosives.  The one that happened to be in front made a wrong step and tripped a grenade causing him to explode, which sent his limbs toward the two behind him causing them to fall on more mines.

Drakar was watching the action from the other end of the field and started to get a little cocky.

“Man, this might be easier than I thought it would be.”

Three more came the exact same way, but this time stepped on the bodies of the others to safely make it across.  The leader pointed for them to take a different route, one up the middle, and two to the right.

To the right was the building where the set charges were and before they could get out of the way they were both disposed off.

Drakar had seen that not all three had gone that way so he knew that one of them was still alive, so he decided he would stalk the other three people remaining.

He quickly climbed on top of the shed to his left to get a better view.  He could see the two trailers entering the field while the one from the last group was trying to find a way around the building, but was blocked by the hill.

Once the first guy was in range he pulled out his vibroblade and readied himself to leap off.  In one quick motion he dropped on the guy, knocked his weapon away and stabbed him in the chest.

“One down, two to go” thought Drakar.

He quickly moved around the building to where he could see one of the two men motioning to the other one. He decided that he was going to try and kill him with the building itself so he placed a charge on one of the support beams and tried to bait the guy into coming his direction.

Surprisingly enough, the guy took the bait and walked right into a trap.  As soon he was close enough to see Drakar, Drakar waved and set off the charge causing him to be crushed by the huge amount of concrete.

“One left”, said Drakar muttering to himself.

He saw that the last one was examining everything around him to make sure he didn’t walk into a trap, which gave Drakar an opportunity to sneak up on him.  As he was sneaking he accidently broke a twig under his left foot, which alerted the man in front of him of his presence.  The man quickly turned around and began to shoot wildly.

Drakar dodged a couple of blaster bolts before tackling the man with his sword, driving it deep into his chest.

“Drakar, well done.  And might I say, good idea of using a funnel.  I can’t say I have ever seen that tactic before in all my years of doing this.  Anyways, good job and you may return to base and await your next class.  From here on out, it only gets harder.

“Thank you sir”, said Drakar as the shuttle door closed behind him.
