Communications Technician
Level 1: Equipment and Procedures
Story 1: Installation, Utilization, and Operation of Comm. Equipment

Darien woke and sat up in bed. "I hate that nightmare" he said as he got in the shower and rinsed the sweat from his body. He dried off and got dressed and went out for breakfast, before he had to be at comm. tech training. After eating an apple and drinking a glass of water, D heads to class. On his way he decided to do a search on his teacher Sgt. Varis. He found that he was a decorated officer from way back and that he was strict but fair as a teacher and as a squad commander. He met up with his friend Alexei. “Hey Alex, ready for class?” D asked. “Sure am!” exclaimed Alexei, “what about you?” he asked. “As ready as I'll ever be.” said D.

"Hello class, I'm Sgt. Bernard Varis and I'll be your instructor for comm. tech training. as I call your name come and get your equipment package. Sgt. Varis said. As he called the names one by one everyone in class got their equipment. He finally called D's name. D walked up to him and took his equipment package and went back to his seat. He opened the package and took note of his gear. A military-grade datapad, planetary comm. rig, droid repair kit, computer repair kit, diagnostics kit, and a lightweight tool kit. D fiddled with the datapad thinking this is a lot more sophisticated than my old datapad I wonder how it'll work on the infonet

Sgt. Varis went on to lecture them on the use of each piece of equipment. D took detailed notes on his new datapad and couldn't wait until lunch so he could try it out on the infonet. “So what do we do now?” D asked. Sgt. Varis replied, “Now you go to lunch and study for your first test which is on the information on your datapad.”great I can't wait! thought D as he left to go to lunch. At lunch he sat with his friend Alexei. “Hey Alex, what do you think about this equipment?” D asked as they sat down to eat. “It's pretty cool” replied Alexei. “do you think this test will be easy?” Alexei asked. “Yeah I think it'll be a breeze!” D exclaimed.

As they studied at lunch D realized that this was easy stuff.I can't believe this stuff! It's probably easy just because it's the first day, so it will probably just get harder from here on out. D and Alexei headed back to class and D readied himself for the first test. As the teacher handed out the test D thought he was going to pass with ease. But he barely passed he got a C. He was satisfied with that but he hoped the rest of his grades would be a little better than this grade was.

The next day the test was on setting up the planet comm. rig. D got the tripod and set up the satellite and hooked up the receiver to the satellite and set the transponders to the proper frequency and calibrated the receiver to the proper frequency and the satellite to the proper latitude and longitude. “Very good” said Sgt. Varis. He was given a transmission to send to another classmate. Putting on the headgear, D realized he was pretty good at this. “The Crowe flies at Midnight” He spoke into the mouthpiece. “And the eagle flies at dawn”, came the reply. “Pass!” Sgt. Varis exclaimed to D.

After breakfast the next morning D got dressed and headed to class for the computer repair class. As D opened up the computer he realized that it was like nothing he had ever seen. The Doors Operating system is not loading into the RAM that seems to be the problem D thought out loud. He checked to see if the RAM was seated properly into the receptacle and it was. He hooked up the diagnostics kit and ran the program. It seems there's a virus in the system. D ran the Diagnostics kits antivirus and was able to get the computer running accept for the monitor was down. Opening the monitor he found several wires were disconnected. Reaching into his repair kit he brought out his soldering iron and soldered the wires into their proper places and raised his hand. “I'm finished” he said to Sgt. Varis. “seems you got it working, but what took so long?” the Sgt. asked. “I found that my monitor was broken so I fixed it.” D said. “Crowe, you pass.” Sgt. Varis said.

The next day of class, D had to repair a broken HK model droid. He got his droid repair kit and started checking the droids systems. It seemed that his droid had a malfunctioning servo motor. He opened up the droids leg and saw that he was incorrect. He took out his diagnostics kit and ran a complete diagnostic of the droid. He found that the droid had several program errors. He accessed the droids main program logic matrices and corrected the mistakes then rebooted the droid. The droid thanked him and walked away. “Pass” said Sgt. Varis. “Next class will be your final exam” said Sgt. Varis “I expect all of you to pass”

As he left class, Darien decided to hit the cantina he walked in and ordered a beer. As he drank the beer he looked over the info for the final test. “let's see, I need to find the enemy computer and download the documents and transmit a message to Sgt. Varis.” D thought out loud. sounds easy enough D thought as he finished his beer and went back home to get some sleep before the final exam the next day.

The next day, he went to class he was running a little late. “Crowe, You're late!” yelled the Sgt. “Sorry sir.” D apologized. “Anyway, as I was saying ya'll have to get to the enemy computer past the guard droids and download the schematics for the BA-7 Cargo airspeeder, delete the enemy copy, set up your comm. rig, and send out the message 'mission complete'.” said Sgt. Varis. “Sir, how long do we have?” asked D. “You have as much time as you need, but try to be done before sun down.” commented the Sgt.

D readied his weapon and started in towards the enemy computer. He shot down three or four of droids and headed for the enemy computer. Some more of them got in D's way so he shot them and continued dodging blaster fire and got to the computer. “Now lets see” he said as he shot another guard. “I take this wire and connect it to that wire and boot up that system. Now crack the password and enter it into the system.” Shooting another guard with his fletchette pistol ”and now I start the download.” he said as he finished hooking up the computer to his datapad.

He stood guard over his datapad as more enemies showed up. He shot them down all but one which came in close so he drew his Rykk Kerarthorr Blades and sliced up the opposing guard. “Download complete” chimed his datapad as he disconnected his datapad and set up the comm. rig and sent the message “Mission complete Sgt. Varis” to the Sgt. “Good job Crowe” said Sgt. “come back to the classroom and you'll be through.” This was a lot of fun! D thought as he packed up his equipment and headed back to class to receive his final grade. “For such a good job in a tense situation, you receive a B+ for your final grade.” said Sgt. Varis. “Thank you sir” said D. As he left the class he thought I hope I have him for my next class. As he walked home with Alexei, he asked him, “Well, do you think our next class will be any easier?” “Nope I think it will only get harder from here on out.” said Alexei seriously. “I guess you're right.” D remarked. “Want to grab a beer Alex?” D asked. “Sure, let's go.” said Alex.

Darien Crowe
Communication Technician Specialty
Level 1: Equipment and Procedures
Story 2: Communications Operations, Procedures, and Techniques

The next day, D reported for his course on Communications Operations, Procedures, and Techniques. The teacher was Sgt. Varis again. Awesome D thought I have him again. “Welcome back Crowe,” said the Sgt, “I see you're back for more.” “I'm ready for the challenge,” D exclaimed. “Okay glad to here it,” said the Sgt, “Here we go.” D took notes as the Sgt. lectured them on Communication Operations. It was easy to note everything he said because the Sgt. was a slow talker. I’m going to do better this class. D thought as he went to lunch. He had fries and a bottle of water.

At lunch he met up with one of the other students, his friend, Alexei. “Hey Alex!” shouted D, “sit over here!” “Hey D, how do you like this class so far?” asked Alexei. “It's good,” said D as he ate his fries. “Alex, what do you think of that final test last class?” D inquired. “It was pretty easy,” said Alexei. They ate the rest of their lunch in silence. They headed back to class and got ready for more notes. After class D invited Alexei to go to the cantina, but Alexei declined, “I can't” he said, “I've got to study.” So D went to the cantina alone and he studied and he drank. Five beers later, he went home to get some sleep.

The next day, he met up with Alexei for breakfast. They decided to study while they ate. After breakfast they went to class. “Okay class, we have a test today.” said the Sgt. Varis handed out the tests and D looks at it and thinks I’m sure glad I studied. “Tomorrow we will cover Communication Procedures,” said the Sgt. D realized that the test was easy. Of course I'll pass D thought as he handed in the test and left for lunch.

At lunch he found out that Alexei was worried about the test. “I just don't think I did very well,” Alexei said. “Aw, man you know you passed!” D prodded. “I know I did,” D said. “Well good for you D, we all can't be as smart as you!” Alexei quipped. D laughs and says, “You know what you've got a sarcastic streak in you.” “Want to go to the cantina?” asked Alexei. “Sure” said D. They got to the cantina and ordered him and Alexei a beer. They talked and drank their beer until D decided to call it a night. “See you tomorrow Alex.” D said.

The next day, D headed to class for Comm. Procedures. “Now this is the hardest part of the course.” said Sgt. Varis. Oh no D thought as he got out his datapad. I’ll have to work hard this time. he thought. Sgt. Varis began lecturing them on the proper techniques for using the comm. equipment. “Now your comlink has a minimum range depending on the model you own. The more expensive the longer the range.“ As D took the notes down as fast as he could he thought wow, this is a lot of notes! He took notes for about two hours straight then they broke for lunch.

At lunch Alexei commented, “That was one hell of a note taking session!” “Yeah,” said D as they ate their lunch. “You want to come over to my place and study after class?” asked D. “Sure” said Alexei. They went back to class.

Back in class D sat down, booted up his datapad barely in time for the barrage of notes to begin. He took notes, a lot of notes. The class took notes until the end of class. As they were leaving, the Sgt. gave them back their tests. D passed with a B+ Yes! thought D as he left to meet up with Alexei.

D got himself and Alexei a beer when they got back to his apartment. They began their study session. They studied late into the night, knowing there would be a test the next day. They both felt that they had studied as much as they could Alexei went home, leaving D by himself. “I hope I pass this next test,” D thought out loud as he drifted off to sleep.

D showed up early to ask the Sgt. a question concerning the transmission of a holocom message through hyperspace. “So I just punch in the hyperspace coordinates of the person I am trying to contact and record and send the message?” D asked. “Yeah, but it would be quicker if you record the message ahead of time.” said the Sgt. “Now get to your seat, the test is about to start.” the Sgt. said.

“Here’s your test” said the Sgt., “you have four hours.” D began his test. oh man I hope I studied enough. thought D. lets see a Hush-98 comlink has a maximum 100km, low orbit range and the 3-Mal comlink has a 50km range up to low orbit. Man this test is easy! D thought. Four hours pass and D finishes the last question as the bell rang for lunch. As D and Alexei headed for lunch Alexei asked D, “How do you think you did?” “Well,” D said, “I believe that I did good but I am not completely sure if my belief is correct.”

The next day D showed up for class and received his test back. He got an A! Yes! D thought as he went to his seat and began taking the notes on Communication Techniques. At the end of class, the Sgt. told them that the next class would be their final exam and that it would be a practical exam over the operations, procedures, and techniques you have learned throughout this course.

The next day D showed up grabbed his gear and headed for the practice battlefield. The Sgt. Told them that each of them would have to transmit a message requesting reinforcements during a simulated fire fight. D knew he could do it. At the battlefield he readied his weapon. The others had to defend the one student who was sending the communication until it was their turn. D shot at the enemy and took down two or three of droids as Alexei sent his transmission. It finally came to be his turn so he set up his comm. rig and adjusted the settings so it would transmit to Sgt. Varis. He sent the message, “We need reinforcements here now!” Sgt. Varis replied, “Reinforcements are on their way Private First Class Crowe.” “Thank you sir,” D replied.

As they were heading back to class from the battlefield, D asked Alexei, “How did you do?” Alexei responded, “I did good, you?” D said, “Yeah.” They got back to class and Sgt. Varis told them all that they passed. “I’ll see you next course!” the Sgt. Told them as they left to go home. D thought yes you will Sgt. Varis
