ObjectiveTo determine biological classification, chemical makeup, and sentience of the Cleoggi.
Laboratory LocationTadath Institute of Technology
SpecimensOne live Cleoggi, three deceased Cleoggi.
Main Outcome MeasuresClinical, biochemical, genetic, and imaging findings, including cerebral magnetic resonance imaging, proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and positron emission tomography with fluorine 18–labeled deoxyglucose.
ResultsCerebral magnetic resonance imaging and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy findings were remarkable. The cerebral matter constantly evolved in some manner, even during the taking of the readings. Molecular analysis of the brain of deceased Cleoggi 1 and 2 reveal that it is composed of heavier elements than normal, and highly unstable. H
2O is non-present, and seems to have Rb
2Po instead. Examination of the fluid from the reported lake of the trooper reveals this to be the same substance. It decays with a half-life of approximately 436 standard years.
The observation of heavier elements in the cerebral matter led to the molecular examination of tissues, bones, organs, and other matter of the Cleoggi specimens. It is led to believe that the entire race is composed primarily of heavy elements, many of which are unstable. Instead of being Carbon based like many of the species of the Galaxy, these specimens are Lead based, which might account for their ability to withstand some of the radioactivity of the planet.
The creatures have no sign of stomach or any digestive system, and their mouths seem to be a path that evolution abandoned. The only organ that provides any form of digestion appears to be something similar to a liver, of which they have several situated close to the skin. Estimated 80% of the skin has one of these organs underneath it immediately. Upon examination, these absorb radiation particles, especially those that the unstable crystal samples emit. Through trial and error, it was determined that the Cleoggi use these organs for a process similar to photosynthesis, using radiation in the place of light, and employing heavier elements. The term used in this paper for this process is radiosynthesis. The process on the molecular scale is as follows:
Rb
2Po + GePo
2 + Radiation Particles ---> Po
2 + “Heavy Sugar”
In order to produce the heavy sugars that they use for energy, the Cleoggi must immerse his/her self in a pool of the Rb
2Po liquid, then once the liver-like organs have absorbed the fluid, move into a radioactive area. It is not known where exactly the GePo
2 molecules are from, but it would appear the body has a finite supply and does not excrete any waste with these molecules, thus recycling the atoms.
The next stage of examination was the DNA of the Cleoggi specimens, both deceased and alive. Rather than the double helix expected, the Cleoggi store genetic material within a triple helix, which seems to support the theory they are capable of quickly mutating. They have 16 Chromosomes, and have two apparent genders determinable from the current specimens. The chromosomes suggest possibly four genders, but the specimens required to confirm this speculation are not available.
Reexamining the brain for the typical signs of sentience, there is no conclusive result to support nor deny sentience. The brain is in near constant evolution. It is estimated from specimens on hand, that approximately 0.068% of Cleoggi will become sentient through the stabilization of their cerebral matter. The error range for this percentage cannot be determined reasonably, as the test pool contained only four specimens, of which only one was alive.
