Hey all.

Bio
------

Name: Gregory Silan
Age: 24
Height: 6'4
Hair style: short and thick
Hair Colour: Black
Eye colour: Grey

Physical Appearance
------------------------
Tall and slim. Well built. Scar across
right shoulder from a wound sustained
in during accident on board his fathers ship.

Personality
--------------
Having grown with little contact with other people his own age always talking to the same people on board Gregory tends to be a bit secluded from others. He acts well with people he's familiar with and is quite friendly. Not to comfortable with a weapon but with flying he keeps his cool when under fire.

History
---------

Gregory was born on a merchant ship and so never really had a home. Having spent most of his childhood with his father onboard some ship or other he never spent much time on any planet and always felt somewhat Agoraphobic whenever they stepped off the ship. Ever since he was young he'd always been eager to fly. His father took him out in small shuttle's and thought him how to fly. His father had been part of a Rebel squadron for some time but now was a merchant. He was a natural born flier having spent his childhood on board a ship and with the teachings of a former fighter pilot that had served for many years.

Gregory had no friends (except the staff on the ship who weren't much company) as he hadn't gone to a school. he was thought by a well educated engineer on board the ship. He met some people when they were on a world for a while and generally got on well with them. They never lasted long as before they really got to know each other he would have to leave again. From the first time this happened he was dissappointed as Gregory had looked forward to having a good friend. Every other brief friendship he'd had over the years he managed not to get too attached to the person as he knew he'd have to leave again.

On one brief visit he happened to glance a view of a few Tie interceptors flying just above a planet they were heading to. The speed at which they flew and the swift turns and loops they made they seemed to do with ease. He was amazed by them. He spent a lot more time practicing flying as he knew what he wanted to do.

After a few weeks Gregory went to find the nearest imperial recruiter. He new from the moment he saw those pilots that he wanted to be one of them. Every night he can imagine the frusration on his fathers face as he read the letter he had left him. The anger and the sense of being betrayed. He was following in his fathers footssteps in becoming a pilot but not the sort of pilot he imagined his father wanted him to be.

I'm going to give you this customary message that is usually handed out at this time, but note that I'd like you to expound a little more on your bio with the help of our first chapter 'Character Development.'  I'll be by tomorrow to make more suggestions if you haven't reconfigured in any way- either way: great to see a new face- I hope you'll enjoy your stay.

---

Howdy there- I'm the training officer (TO) of the Vast Empire Naval Academy (VENA).  Our staff, the VENA-S, is composed of trainers and operators, all who can be seen at the following website:

http://www.vastempire.com/wiki/index.php?title=VENA_Staff

Now that you've posted here on the ComNet, you've actually completed the Imperial Initiation (II) phase of Basic Training (BT).  BT's second phase is called Flight School (FS), which is made up of three chapters (though you'll only do two) and an exam.  The first chapter, and probably the most important aspect of our system, is that of Character Creation- the bio.  In order for your character to exist in our club, our universe if you will, you need to create them in written form, detailing their stories, their personalities and the physical aspects that we may be aware of with a glance or perhaps things we can not see with the naked eye.  Either way, you're going to tell us how to describe you're character in a more detailed fashion than you're probably used to, but that's part of the fun.

Really, the bio is a tool- think of it as the essential form of telling someone what your character is like.  When someone in your squadron is wanting to know what you're eye color was again or what that abandoned planet was your character was born on- where are they going to look?  SO- this is a source of all knowledge on your character, a reservoir of important info.  Eventually, you're bio will contain other important facts about you, the member of the Vast Empire Navy, like rank, medals, commendations and other certificates.

So, if you'll follow the link below, you'll be able to see the entirety of Flight School, the portion of BT I was referring to above.  BT is, essentially, training and thus, once you've passed through it, you're going to be placed in an Active Squadron, in 'Active Duty'.  On the other hand, during training, you're actually a part of a Training Squadron- this squadron is known as 'Venom Squadron.'  During you're time here you will need to make at least one report out to the squadron commander - myself - through our message center.

Also, depending on how well you do here against the recruits currently training, as long as there are at least three going through at the same time you are, you'll receive a rank at the end of your training and receive certain recommendations or promotions.  On the Sunday of your completion of BT, you will have a graduation ceremony with you're fellow recruits and rewards and the like will be handed out.  Note though, only the strong and studious will make it that far, though I don't think any of our activities are too overwhelming, just difficult at first to get used to.

So, you'll want to go to Chapter 1- Character Development first where you'll create a bio.  Just remember that in the course of your training sometime, preferably before the end of the week and before you're graduation ceremony, you'll have to make a report.  So, lets get off to a good start and get you goin- Rock On!

Welcome to the Vast Empire Imperial Navy, Gregory.

I am C-3PX2, a VENA Operator Level 1. As Shazam said the first step of the naval academy has been completed with your post here. Now you move onto creating your character in your own unique way. Once you have completed it, or in this case edited you current version, post it here and once of the VENA staff members will look it over. Be creative and make your character they way you want it to be (just keeping in mind to be somewhat reasonable, ex. no force powers). Really the bio looks good, except on the part for history, try to expand it a little more going into what happened through their life before joining the Vast Empire.

So far though your doing good, Welcome to Flight School of the Vast Empire Imperial Navy.

Not too bad, actually, Silan.  You noted that you could expand greatly on what you've written above, which is really what we'd hope for initially, but if you're afraid that you'll be revealing too much of your plot ahead of time- that's understandable.  What I do like to know is that you really know your character before hand.  While you've created some basic info, I still don't feel like we have that understanding of who your character is.  So- a couple of ideas we can try to fix it and get moving on to the final chapter- you'll be sent to an active squadron afterword, so again- essential we understand your character.

First:  You do have a physical description, however, you lack an emotional or personality description.  That personality is the one identifying trait that will be used constantly- people don't want to have to continuously remind others that you have "those gray eyes and dark black hair..."  No, sir- they want to talk about your personality.  They say "Hi" and, according to your descriptions, they will create a response, which, in all reality, is the basis of our ability to write with each other.  From these minor relationships, we create conflicts: love, hate, loyalties, etc.  So think to yourself: if I went up and introduced myself to my character, what would a conversation be like?  Would there be one?

Note that I prefer your character be able to speak on some level than be in a state of constant silence: it's bad ass, yes, but leaves you hanging when you need character development.  If you can, providing your character with some kind of bias or opinion is extremely helpful in making him marketable to your fellow pilots.  If there's something they think is interesting about your character, they'll pick up on it and include you to a greater degree in the stories.  So, it's not necessarily about being the most unique person ever, or giving yourself some extraordinary ability, it's about knowing your character and knowing that you can create a rift somewhere.  Really knowing your character can be hard until you've written with them for a while, or really had time to think out their life-long plot progression, but we can at least try and get an idea for now: we usually make these events up on the fly, anyways

Second:  I know you think you can expand more on your plot later, but that doesn't necessarily mean you can't tell us just a little bit more right now.  Since you imply that your character left his father after only a few weeks, it could be helpful to tell us why, creating an initial conflict.  If you think that's the basis of your entire plot, I suppose you can leave it out, but we do need just a little more meat with these potatoes: was it difficult for him to get away?  Did it require illegal action of any kind?  Does he have any ideas of what his father thinks might have caused him to leave so suddenly?  Does your character have anyone that they know in the VE that you could refer to throughout your active story post?  Really- we're just looking for a final foothold: something you can talk about besides the conflict of your personality: this is plot, essentially, that you can let everyone else in on.

Three:  If you think you're kind of blanking on ideas right now- that's alright and it's perfectly understandable.  Thus, if you'd like some time to think, you can move on to Chapter 2: Pilot Procedure.  This, for the most part, is the most useful couple pages of information you'll receive throughout your entire career here.  This isn't because it includes every detail of what you need to know, but because it eludes to exceptions and things you might not have known and may want to look into.  Either way- you learn the basics of what it means to be a pilot and what you'll be equipped with.  There is a short assignment, so we'll expect you to post that here.  And remember- if you need any help: you can always jump on java chat (found under the logistics heading on our main page) or on IRC for that matter, and enter the room #VENA.  Anyone in there should be able to help you on absolutely any of the objectives listed above.  Furthermore, if you don't know how to do the former, or you simply can't or we're not there for some strange reason, you can leave us a message via Message Center or drop a message here where it will probably receive the quickest response.  Keep it up, Silan, and we'll see where this takes you, man.

Better, man- and I think you meant Chapter 2- Pilot Procedure.  We don't require you create the posts for Chapter 3: just read through the section entitled "The Squadron."  And then you'll be set for active duty- though, within that first week, not only will I receive at least one report from you, but you'll need to complete the Aviator's Exam.  After that- that's all you and wherever your group takes you

The Sandwich
-----------------

As the name suggests the idea is to sandwich your opponent in between you and your wingmate using yourself or him as bait. Once the enemy moves onto your tail your wing-mate moves onto his tail and atempts to destroy him. THere are a couple of things i see going wrong with this. Either the enemy on your tail will manage to destroy you before your wing-mate can do anything or your wing-mate accisentaly over-shooting hitting you.

Roll
-------

THe general idead of this manouvre is to roll out of range of the enemies weapons if they are on your tail. A sharp roll to the left or right (witchever poisition would be more suitable) should shake the enemy of your tail for a few minutes. Another possible option would be a sharp roll to the side, followed by a sharp dive or to pull up quickly in an attempt to get behind your enemy. The only problem with this tactic is the risk of rolling into range of another enemy or rolling into something and damaging your craft.

That's very well done, Silan, so I'm going to direct you to some final things I'd like you to get moving on before we put you in an active squadron.  The most important thing is going to be putting yourself on our Vast Empire Wiki:

http://www.vastempire.com/wiki/index.php?title=Character_Page_Tutorial

Note that any assistance you need or misunderstandings you might have can be solved by coming to anyone on the staff (message center, MSN, IRC in the room #VENA- get in touch with myself (FMJR), Cyleaf, Tomas, or C-3PX2).

If you do get to a point where you need a question answered and have to wait around for some reason, I'd like you to read through this little section:

http://www.vastempire.com/wiki/index.php?title=The_Squadron

While that last link isn't absolutely necessary (it's not long at all), I'd very much prefer you read through it simply because it'll allow you to know what Kaph Squadron will be expecting from you once you join them at the conclusion of these activities.  This'll keep you from having to learn time-consuming lessons about how the squadron works together, and all that good stuff, so- it's a good read anyways?  Either way- really happy to have had you around and I further hope you'll be a helpful addition to our ranks; keep rockin, man.

Did you give it your correct Email adress when you registered the wiki account? Check in your account options to see, and if it is wrong cahnge it to your correct one and have it send annother activation code to your email. That should fix your problem

It is important to make the wiki, though using the templates make it alot easier. http://www.vastempire.com/wiki/index.php?title=Character_Page_Tutorial

This page has a very useful Tutorial on how to make, edit, and mantain your wiki page. Also, look at other people's pages to see what they have done for their pages to get an idea what exactly it looks like. People have things on their with everything from tables to pictures.

Sorry for not getting back to your right away, man- but I have a bit of a dilemma.  Right now, as you may or may not have noticed, the VEN is in a state of very, very low-activity.  This isn't to deter you from staying with us in anyway, but a warning that the RL of the people here are making it incredibly difficult to post continually as we all would like.  Thus, I need to know if you think you can run pretty independently- without the support of a lot of colleagues.  I can help you out, and maybe one or two others if you include yourself with us, but initially you're going to have to be your own motivating force.  If that's the case- then I can put you in Nazgul, and keep our numbers balanced.  If that's not the case- I'm going to put you in Kaph where there are more active members.  That's not to say either one of the squadrons are better or worse, but that both groups are struggling and I really only want to make sure you're happy once you get into a group.  So- message me back, and I'll place you accordingly.  Also, the Aviator's Exam is taken within the first week of Active Duty; keep rockin, man.

Alright- I'm ganna put you on the roster with Nazgul sometime this weekend, and if you're around during that time, jump on IRC if you can.  Either way- we're going to include you in the story that's already going on, and hopefully we'll be able to get everyone that happens to be writing, in roughly the same area so we don't feel like we're all writing on our own.  I'll update you either way, bud.  So- find the Nazgul topic on the Main Navy ComNet and say hello to your new group: Welcome to the Imperial Navy.
