Word Count tab

My version of WordPerfect does not have a word Count option. i know there are Websites for that. But i think it would just be easier f we added that as an option when we write or edit a post.
I am stuck counting each paragraph and adding it up in the end and it gets quite long and sometimes it's not the right number. And i know Doc gave me a site. but then I would have to go on there every time and my computer sometimes deletes its History (every 20 days at least) and so i lose what I had for future uses.

What version of WordPerfect do you have? I have WordPerfect 12, and it has a Word Count feature under Tools.

Yeah, I gave her a link, it is a simple java script that I am sure Kad can easily integrate into the post pages:

Thanks for the suggestion Luckystar. I was actually working on something like that which would provide the word count for a post as a sort of 'include' into the message. I had noticed a number of posts that contained a word count at the bottom of the message. I am still working on how to insert the count into the message; but basically someone would just type in {WORD_COUNT} in a post, and it would automatically be replaced with some word count information that would be unreproducible so people couldn't cheat. Either that, or provide a check box to count the number of words for a message which would display the number of words counted after the signature. I want to make it automated in some way so that everyone's word counting is done the same; that way, no one has any advantage/disadvantage when it comes to counting words. If anyone has any other ideas and/or input, let me know.

The word count wouldn't include the signature.

Etan...that's a little off-topic. And Cos, I have WordPerfect 11. Kad, I like the idea of a checkbox option.

Would the word count be able to display the amount of words used while you're still writing the post? Particularly with the navy's ESC I found myself cosntantly going backward and forward through the web checking to see how close I was to all the specific boundaries. And my computer is pretty crappy, that led to it crashing a lot of the time.
And if you have to submit the post to check the word count, that would lead to a lot of unnecessary edits which look really untidy.

What if there was a button you could press that would display the current word count for the message dynamically? Or, it could also display the current word count on the message preview?
I know you can get the current word count using javascript that would dynamically keep it updated in some display as you type; but, that may not take into account all the BBCode and HTML unless I taught it to parse that out as well. I'd rather not have to duplicate the code in two places; so I would prefer to keep the word counting on the server side of things.
Would one of those first two options be reasonable?

I don't think there is a need for current word count. The whole idea of writing in ESC is not to see who can write enough useless things to meet the standards, it's to write well. Besides, we're going back to the old system, only a minimum of words requirement, nothing else. and the same goes for all other writing, what's the point of writing if it's to see if one can simply meet a number of words?

No one's forcing anybody to use the word count, it's just a utility for people who don't have means to get a word count otherwise. I don't think it encourages lazy writing at all.
I think if we're movin' into all this fancy comnet stuff, word count is a good idea.

That's a good point Decembrist. i think that there should be an option for each user. So eachcan decide if they want it enabled or disabled.

I didn't say I don't want the word count, just not all the trouble needed for the "current" word count while one types.

It'd probably be a beneficial tool for some - especially for those that do not have some type of word count tool in their word processor.
I personally don't write my posts on ComNet - I write them in MS Word and then paste them onto ComNet, but I know several still write directly on the boards, and all of these features would be useful to them.
