Its very easy, really. Just read over what has been done, then start writting immediatly off the last one, usually with more focus on yourself rather than the other writers. If you want a story focused on you, write it yourself. 
Good examples can be found in the Chapter 7 Naval archives. Go to the main StoryNet, set the little dropdown menu to show you posts back to the begining, pick the chapter seven story and start reading.

Swomz, I'd like you to edit out beating the pirates already. You've effectivly finnished your mission and there is still a lot of time left. That one post could be expanded out to well over a dozen posts spread out over about a week's worth of posting.
In the storyline you've really only just gotten into the system, and the pirates wouldn't be that easy to find. Pirate organizations tend to stay pretty obscure, then leap out and attack, then hide again.
Also, you need to give the other members of your squadron *points at the others* a chance to post on the story, rather than singlehandedly finishing the mission before the competition is even over. Realisticly, you should probably end up finishing the mission on the last day of the comp.
