_-Naval Fighter Upgrade-_

In the last standard year and a half, as most loved ones of our fallen have noticed, the death toll has increased dramatically.  This, of course, would be easily associated with the recent push toward the core from our armed forces; casualties are expected to increase.  Never the less, as the need for men, and capable ones at that, increases, so to does the need for efficient equipment.  At a holo conference between the spokesperson for Vast Empire Naval Engineering [VENE] Division, Tyuqwo Phi, and Vectra System Media and Press [VSMP], certain steps for more stringent repair protocol were announced along with a few innovations in the design of many of the Navy's leading fighters.  Most eye-opening was the spokesman reported figure, a 13% increase in pilot fatality due to suspected faulty equipment.

Though he did not elaborate, this figure was most likely linked to emergency launches where full repair of ships can not be guaranteed.  In one interview with a pilot put into reserves due to injury, he reported taking off with four radiation grills missing.  For the initiated, radiation grills cover the fighter's wing arrays and allow for waste heat and radiation to be filtered out, keeping the pilot safe from toxic doses of radiation and, in extenuating circumstances, spontaneous rupture of the Ion Engines, resulting in detonation of the craft and its pilot.  Our pilot was fortunate enough to eject before the latter engulfed him in a well known and feared collision with the unknown.  However, it is here that he, and many that are no longer with us, noticed something inconvenient.  Primarily- the ejection seat trigger.  In the academy, pilots are required to practice ejection sequences frequently, but our pilot said that the time that it takes to reach down on the right side of the seat and use the escape trigger is far too long.  Many other pilots agree.  Thus, steps have reportedly been taken to re-locate the escape trigger to the control yoke or at least put it nearby to cut down on the time required to perform the escape from any craft.

This and numerous other, usually minor, annoyances are being put to rest in the Navy's latest attempts to improve the effectiveness of their Fighter Core and the survivability rate of their pilots.  Phi said later on, reminiscing on his own naval career - "We were always expected to become better where equipment failed to do the work for us.  In this case, our pilots must survive long enough to learn how to do just that- green pilots have never been all that great at disassembling their controls interface during combat.  These things take time and a whole lot of bad situations."

One might ask, especially in query to the ejection scenario, why such an innovation hadn't been obvious to the VEN engineers from the very beginning.  As were many things, fighters were given a certain monetary value in the days of the Empire- the skill of the pilot was what earned them their wings as well as their freedom.  Thus, as long as they had the tools to survive, though not necessarily in the most convenient places, but the cheapest, it would have to be enough.  However, since the capabilities, and not necessarily the designs were improved when the VE adopted the TIE Interceptor, little things like the ejection handle were 'over-looked.'

For what?  Everyone can remember the relief that flooded over the majority of VE space when the announced shield and missile upgrades came out nearly three and a half standard years ago.  This improvement alone and all of the problems that followed it have consumed most of the engineering department's time and energy.  That change yielded, single-handedly, a 73% increase in pilot survivability.  Only recently, since the release of the increased death toll, has a seperate group been assigned to smooth out inconveniences for our pilots.  These, along with certain guidance, control and targeting systems that have been troublesome in the past, but can not be fleshed out here, are to be operated on and made more efficient.  Perhaps in a year's time we will be able to see the effectiveness of such minute changes.

Critics agree that this is a last ditch effort to appease the masses of left behind loved ones, not only in the Vectra System where many pilots are born and raised, but throughout the entirety of VE space, that claim the surge for the core is a ridiculous quest, a power trip by Grand Moff Kadann to establish is own throne, as so many other Imperial Factions have been accused of doing.  Many continue to blame the Naval High Council for poor strategic leadership and a lax protocol on pilot and shipcrew training.  In response to this alleged report of negligence, Naval Commander V'hou commented only- "This is war- there are no guarantees."  V'hou, often thought to be the harshest of the commanders allowed into NHC meetings, was later translated as meaning- "There will always be times that casualites increase or decrease: situations dictate."

The HC continues to contend that the very survival of the VE is dependent upon continued pressure in the territories beyond.  Furthermore, taking the core itself would prove to be a lethal blow to both the Rebellion and opposing Imperial Forces, setting the stage for a new rule in the galaxy, or atleast a galactic power.  For those who consider this premonition to be far-fetched, claims on the other side of the spectrum suggest that the day is coming when warships will land on Abrae, Lotaith and other VE hotspots to disassemble the organization that has taken over much of what was once unknown territory.  Though outrageous and, by the assurances of the VEHC, far from becoming a reality, it is these very things they wish to wipe off the minds of every Imperial Citizen.

With the announced presence of a supposed 'Grand Admiral,' and various pilot lords creating small militias in an effort to support the agendas of their own leaders, mostly governors of planets or systems, fear has spread throughout the sectors that a shift in power is simply unavoidable.  "This is why we must keep the pressure on and continue to improve our military powers- the best defense is a strong offense," said Axli Modore, Commander of the 12th fighter wing, stationed momentarily on Abrae.  Either way, only time will tell if these changes and the dissension between Imperial command and citizen will produce a healthy VE for the future.

Alright- this really only means that we're moving the ejection handle in our fighters, but I got a bit carried away.  Does this make sense?  I figure Kadann is actually in control of the VE and that Japheth isn't actually in the NHC, story-wise, or if he is: it's not as high as we usually indicate.  I usually see Japheth, in my mind atleast, as someone who just controls a fleet: but I could most certainly be wrong.  Japheth, would you consider your character to be the top dawg of the entire VEN in story?

Thats certainly what my position tends to indicate, given that I am a member of the Vast Empire High Command and report directly to the Head of the High Council (Kadann). =

I've always assume that I control the entire Navy and that I simply focus very heavily on my flagship and its fleet (in this case, the fleet all the other players' characters are in). Additionally, I'm a Fleet Admiral in our organization, a rank never held by anyone that wasn't the Naval Commander in Chief in the history of this organization (to my knowledge :P).
