                                                  ASSAULT ON THE GRIDIRON

Excitement buzzed through the air. The shouts of Cheer Leaders and fans rang through the air as both Football teams made there way off the field, and into the locker rooms. Both teams had finished there pre-game warm-ups and were going into the locker rooms to make there final preparations. Shortly after they made there way off the field, three official men, know as referees, walked onto the center of the field. One of them waved for silence, and in a matter of seconds, the small stadium was completely silent.

The main ref then keyed a switch on a black device that was attached to his hip. With a surprisingly cheery voice he spoke.

"So hows everyone doing tonight?"  The crowd replied with a roar, and when the Ref seemed satisfied, he keyed the switch again...

Inside the Bull-Dogs locker room

Leon looked around the locker room nervously, hoping someone would give him a smile of reassurance, but they all felt the same way as he did. The last time he could remember being this nervous was on his first mission. What made it worse was the loud booming of the Refs voice, and the crowd roaring with approval. Even though it was muffled because they were inside, it was still pretty loud. Turning his gaze to the left, Leon found himself staring into the eyes of his Captain, team mate, and friend; Jakireth. He, like Leon, played two roles on the team, one of them being Middle Line Backer, and the other being  Half Back. He was definitely the best player on the team, and also the most tenacious. Leon remembered when they had been in the pit against each other. Jak had hit Leon so hard that he saw black for a couple of seconds. But Leon was stronger now, and he wouldn't let any of his opponents do the same as Jak had done.

Leon played Quarter Back and Free Safety. When it came to hitting, Leon was a beast, but he just didn't have that same intensity as Jak had. Leon was also a good Quarter Back, but needed to develop his arm a bit more. They were the two captains of the team, and together, they were unstoppable. There were other good team members to, like Sosa who played Defensive End, and Curry who played Slot Receiver, but they weren't the same, they didn't have that same explosiveness as Jak and Leon.

A set of foot steps approaching made all the red and gold clad players turn there heads. This set of foot steps turned out to be there head coaches steps, Coach Pollard. He was 5'10, black, in his forties, and still in pretty good shape. His eyes were sometimes blood shot, and he was always chewing on tobacco, often spitting out brown saliva. Today he looked different though, he looked almost as nervous as we did. When he reached the center of the room, he motioned for us to kneel around him, and then he spoke.

"You guys ready?" He asked in a very deep voice. Everyone nodded in return, but he didn't seem satisfied.

"Whats with this nodding crap? You guys know I don't take that kind of shit. Now, let me repeat myself, are you guys ready?!"

"Yes Coach!" Replied the team in unison.

"I can't hear youuuu!"

"YES COACH!!!!" Shouted the team even louder now.

"Alright thats better. So let me begin. Everyones expecting that the other team is gonna whoop our ass, are we gonna let that happen?"

"NO SIR!!!!"

"Who's ass is gonna get whooped tonight?!"

"THERE ASS!!!"

"YEA WERE GONNA MESS THEM UP!!!"

The team started to go nuts, screaming and shouting, they were finally getting hyped up. Coach Pollard new he didn't have to give some fancy speech, he new that when these guys wanted to fight, they fought hard, and thats exactly what he was gonna make them do.

"NOW LETS GO OUT THERE, AND SHOW THEM WERE NOT THE PUNKS THEY THINK WE ARE!! NOW GET OUT OF MY FACE!!!"

And with that the team left the locker room, jumping up and down, shouting, and cursing with excitement. At the head of the pack was Jakireth and Leon, getting ready to make the run out of the tunnel. Leon strapped on his helmet, the black visor covering his eyes, it was game time now.

"You ready Jak?!" Leon shouted at his friend.

"Always have been baby!!!" Jakireth then started running full speed through the tunnel, with Leon close on his side and the rest of the team following. The light at the end of the tunnel started to grow brighter, and the shouts of the crowd were even louder now. Just as they were about to exit the tunnel, Leon remembered all the hard work and training they had been through, and new that they were going to win no matter what happened, and then they were out. The flood lights from above illuminated the playing field and everything with in its vicinity. The stands were packed, and the crowd was going nuts. Adrenaline pumped through Leon's veins as he ran across the field while screaming the whole way. It was fun, Leon had to admit, really fun.

The opposing team was already on the side lines, there captains ready for the coin toss. They were clad in all black, the numbers on there jerseys were blood red. They would have been intimidating if Leon wasn't hyped, but he felt like he could take on the universe. The whole team joined there hands together and got in a single line, as they watched Jak and Leon walk to the center of the field. Leon noted that both of there captains were about four inches taller then him, and most of the other players, but that didn't matter now. He and Jak quickly shook hands with them, and then stood back.

The Ref turned towards Team Rancor and spoke. "Heads or tails?"

"Heads," replied the captain.

The Ref then flipped the coin, and fortunately for Leon, it was tails. "Your choice," Said the Ref while turning to Jak.

"I want to receive," said Jak.

After some more shaking of hands, Leon and Jak got the Kick return team ready. The Kick Returner would be Jak, and the lead blocker would be Leon.

"You ready Jak?" Leon asked his team mate one last time.

"I thought I answered that question already," Said Jak with a smile.

With that, Leon turned his gaze back up-field, and got ready for the game of a life time.

The words danced playfully in Jakireth's head, placing a smile on his face.

I want to receive...

Normally, his coach always entertained the conservative policy of deference on a coin toss, but tonight was different. He wanted to completely demoralize the standing division champs.

I want to receive...

Stretching his quadriceps, the Gunnery Sergeant turned half-back shook out his legs, bouncing in his cleats.

"Bulldogs! Send your Captains!" The slightly round referee announced, his self-declared supremacy ringing into the microphone on his ear.

Coach Pollard nodded, leaving his head in the air, gazing upward. He offered prayers to those above before any game.

"Garrick, Leon, Darien, out in the middle!" He grumbled, placing his headset on and skipping backwards towards the sideline. He began to check with his coordinators in the dura-steel press box over them.

It was a beautiful field, velvet turf running in smooth waves along the enclosed stadium. The imitation grass seemed touched with grace and elegance, but also speaking of fury as the color resembled that of which the bulldog drew when it bites...

Coincidentally enough, Corporal Darien expressed this fully in his first statement of the night; usually quiet as he prepared for the event to come.

"I bet they'll play a game, but I intend to see blood..." He was met with acknowledgement from both Jakireth and Leon.

It was all quite cinematic, especially with the opposing Captains shuffling out in unison. They met out in the middle image denoting the BullDog, the home team's mascot.

"What it do, fellas?" Garrick asked, rolling his shoulders as his last name of Cadrimos crinkled on the back of his jersey.

The medium-sized of the three grinned, pointing a finger at Jakireth and moving his hand across his two teammates.

"I hope 'yall brought your game. Tonight..." He paused, "Should be a good one."

"I agree!" Interrupted the ref, stepping in the middle of the glare that was locked between Garrick and the Away team Captain.

"Now!" He continued, extremely happy, "This coin in my hand is a pure Bothanian make, dedicated to the likes of Grand Admiral Thrawn. The reverse side is imprinted with the seal of the Empire. They will respectively be heads or tails. You!" He said, leveling a hand at the larger representative of Team Rancor, "Call it in the air."

The piece flipped off the referees hand, launching into the space above them. It came down quickly.

"Heads!" The player yelled out.

The ref shook his head, "Tails, B' Dogs, your pick."

Jakireth looked at both of his teammates before beaming at the man in white and black stripes.

"I want to receive."

* * * *

"Alright guys, return middle, torpedo... lets shove it where the sun don't shine. 'Yall ready?" He asked.

"Let's go!" He received.

"You know...I don't think you guys are ready..." He inquired again, provoking his return team.

"Let's go!" Was the reply.

"Better." He said, smiling, "Hands in; what we do on three!"

Darien took the initiative, smacking a gloved hand onto the pile, "They ain't prepared, fellas, let's go... 1!, 2!...3!"

The response nearly shook the stadium seating:

"TO THE HOUSE!"

Lining up, he saw nothing but determination in the eyes of his men, on par with the ready-ness on the battlefield. It was then that the whistle blew.

The ball was sent flying into the air; deep right.

"I got it!" Garrick mumbled to Leon, his protector, "Go go go!"

At that moment, the entire return team surged, pushing forward.

Jakireth juked down, noting that he had already broken ankles - the first play of the game. Spinning off the next brown jersey, he dived at several red ones, following blocks. He rolled into a pocket, spotting one defender left in the wake.

The kicker.

He charged forward, lowering a shoulder...that wasn't needed. Leon came blasting through, cleaning the player up, and quite harshly, as well. Racing forward, he was caught up by a larger player positioned on the front line, requiring him to change direction. Leaping forward as he was snatched in the air by his foot, Garrick landed on the Rancor 25 yard line. Deep into enemy territory.

"Offense out!" Pollard nearly choked, motioning for his lineman to hurry. Reluctantly, the neon-colors of sports drinks were tossed in a heap onto the ground.

Leon stood at attention next to the offensive coordinator, receiving the play.

"Alright, guys," He stated, waiting for his huddle to gather around him, "Let's shock 'em early..."

He waited, staring at Jak.

"Fake 42, Lightning."

The kicker took no notice of the charging Leon, but instead had all his attention on the ankle breaking Jakireth. That would be the kickers first and probably last mistake of the game- always be aware of your surroundings. Leon lowered his shoulder just as he was about to hit the kicker, and with all his might, exploded full force into the little man. A half a second later, the sound of plastic on plastic rang through out the stadium, followed by a gasp from the crowd which then turned into an uproar.

Leon had hit the kicker full force; his shoulder hitting the kickers shoulder, and his helmet crashing into the side of the kickers helmet. The kicker had flew about a good five feet before crashing onto the ground. Leon had felt it also though, and as he stood in the huddle, a high pitched ringing noise resounded in his ears. He quickly shook his head, but it just wouldn't stop. So for now he would just have to put up with it.

Leon turned his gaze back to the beaming Jakireth. He was anxious to run the ball, and Leon was going to give him what he wanted. "Alright guys..." said Leon, pausing to catch his breath. "Let's shock 'em early. Fake 42 Lightning."

Jakireth let out an excited shout at the sound of those words. The whole team could feel it now, a Touch Down was definitely coming. Leon put his hand in the middle of the huddle, the rest of the team taking his league. "Alright, you guys all know the deal; and O-Line, I need you guys to keep it tight up there. A good O-Line means a good offense. You guys ready for a big game?" The team replied with eager nods. "Good! Now lets show them what were gonna do! To the house on two, to the house on two! One, two..."

"TO THE HOUSE!"

The huddle then broke, and everyone started to get into position. Leon could feel the touch down coming. Only twenty-five yards; they were in the Red Zone, and when ever the Bull-Dogs were in the Red Zone, nothing stopped them.

Leon was the last player to get into formation- he was taking his sweet time; letting the tension build among the players. Maybe he would even get lucky and one of the Rancors would jump the gun. But these guys defense was at the top of there game, and that would be very unlikely. Leon let his gaze land on the Middle Line backer. He was a mammoth of a man, and he to, also had a black visor that masked his eyes. That was one thing that Leon thought was very intimidating. Most QB's get scared when the LB's start to throw taunts at them, but that had no effect on Leon. Instead though, it was the quiet ones that bothered him.

There was just something about quiet defenders that bugged Leon, but he just couldn't place his finger on it. Leon then turned his thoughts back to the game. There were fifteen seconds left on the play clock, and that was the signal for Leon to begin the snap count. "Red, 11, Red, 11,  Down..." Leon let five more seconds run off the clock before springing into action.

He casually side-stepped to the left, making the final move before the play began. "Set!"

Jakireth sprang into action, immediately taking the QB's spot in the shotgun and calling the final beat to the cadence. "Hut!" Screamed Jakireth as the ball was snapped to him. Leon watched as the O-Line surged into action, the Full-Back quickly jumping into the struggle. At the same time, Jakireth had started to jog to the left. He brought the ball out to his right side, and did a perfect fake to Curry, who made it seem like he had received the ball. Seconds later, Curry got trucked by the middle line backer.

The play was going perfectly, the defense had completely fell for it. Leon started jogging to the right to get a better view of the rest of the play. It felt like it was all moving in slow motion. Jakireth was running behind Chase, the Tight End, and seconds later a Safety came crashing down on him. Chase had done his job well, and had given Jak a perfect block. Jakireth then exploded, trying to gain as much yardage as he could. There were only two defenders in the way, and if Jak made it past them, he would get his Touch Down.

Leon watched as Jak got closer and closer to the first defender- to close for comfort. As soon as the defender was about to hit him, Jakireth did an ankle breaking spin to the left, leaving the dumb struck defender in his tracks. But as soon as Jak had finished the spin, the second defender was on him, and brought him down on the opposing ten yard line.

Leon quickly ran over to his team mate to help him up. "Nice Move there Jak. You alright?"

Jakireth took Leon's hand without hesitation, and hoisted himself up. "Yea I'm good," said Jak through short gasps of air. "So are we going to pass it next or run it in?" Asked Garrick quietly.

Leon smiled at this question. "What do you think?"

Garrick didn't have to ask and replied with a grin. Leon signaled for his team to huddle up, and quickly gave out the play. "Alright, good job you guys, thats how we should play this whole game. On this play though we ARE going to score. Got that?" The team confirmed with eager shouts, and Leon began again. "Strike 56, Lightning. Break!"

The team broke out into formation, Leon once again in the shotgun. The only difference was that this time Leon would actually receive the ball. He new exactly how this play was going to turn out to, so he had no worries. This was one of his favorite plays, and it worked every time.

"Red 25, Red 25... Down... Set..." Leon lifted his foot off the turf and then brought it back down. "Hut!"

Leon watched as the center snapped the ball, sending it hurtling towards Leon's out stretched hands. As soon as he felt the warm leather touch his hands, he backed into the pocket. He didn't stay there for long though.

The middle Line Backer had broke right through the center and was now charging towards Leon. Perfect, thought Leon as he began to roll out to the left. As soon as he was out far enough, Leon made it seem like he was going to try and run it in. Just as he planned, the Corner Back left his man and came to assist his team mate. Just as the Corner Back was about to hit Leon; Leon threw the ball up into the air at a very steep angle, and then took the hit. The hit wasn't to bad, but maybe it was because Leon had experienced this many times before.

Seconds later, he heard the crowd jump up in excitement as the ball landed into Curry's hands. Leon quickly pushed the defender off of him, and joined in the celebration.

So far so good...
