Very good selections, personally i would have gone for NVidia NForce 500 for the motherboard. But you should have excellent capabilities, (just hope it can run Vista).

I think you've made some excellent upgrade decisions, but then again, I am a bit biased.

Ew. Intel.

Buy this instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103026

or this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103542

The second one is actually cheaper and superior to your choice - although both will require a different socket type - the First being AM2 and the second being 939

Bear in mind that the prices in Yillis' links are in Canadian Dollars, not US.

I used to be an AMD fanboy myself, and still use one in my main gaming PC, but Intel clearly has the better processor for the moment.

While the E6300 isn't the fastest, it's much more effecient, runs cooler, and uses less power than it's AMD counterparts.  The E6300 can easily hold it's own against an X2:4200, and matches up closely with the 4400 and 4600, depending on the application, with the E6300 having a more sizeable lead on the 4400 in some gaming applications.

Overclocking is another option.  A computer-savvy friend could help Yillis easily overclock an E6300 to best an AMD FX-60.  There is plenty of room for this due to the manufacturing process, making the processor run cooler, and consume less power.  It's not unheard of to hit 2.8GHz on air cooling, although 2.6GHz is a more realistic number, with very few, if any detrimental effects to the processor.  IMO, getting $1000 performance out of a $186 processor is certainly worth investigating.

Not that I'm bashing AMD.  As I said, I have one.  They have some awesome processors, but my next upgrade will probably be a Conroe.

I dunno. I've always found AMD model processors just perform better then the Intel ones.

The processors I suggested are 64 bit also (although 64 bit wont have a point for a while longer)

I'm canadian too, I just forgot to find canadian prices :P

Cool.  Regarding AMD, I agree.  AMD unveiled an intel killer when they brought out the AthlonXP's, and another with the Athlon64's, and yet another with the X2's.  All the while, intel plodded along, trying to keep the dying netburst architecture of the P4 alive.

After building a system for a friend using a Core 2 Duo E6300, overclocking it, and seeing it perform, it really changed my mind about Intel.  Not only have they mounted a fierce assault upon AMD's dominance of the performance and enthusiast market, but at present they're winning.  Hopefully this will push AMD to get moving on the AM2 platform.  There is plenty of potential there.

Darr, If I remember correctly, one day Merrick was telling someone she hated AMD with a passion. So that plus Amason's advice is definitely throwing me towards Intel.

Amason, I 'am' the computer savvy friend, you'll have to be mine

I recall her hating HP/Compaq, but I dont remember anything about AMD

Anyways, I think your right when thinking this will push AMD to work harder a bit - I've already seen bits of it (such as their preparation to bring in quad-core AMD processors). Competition makes for better development.

Definitely.  When AMD moves over to a 65nm process, things will really get interesting.
