I was greatly saddened with the news that Prefect Athran resigned as commander of the Vast Empire Army on the first of December.  His humble resignation was so entirely discreet that I felt at least a simple thread should be made honoring his loyal service in our club . . .
Athran, You joined the Vast Empire Navy when Fleet Admiral Majere was still in charge of it and, as the popular commander of Alpha Squadron, were one of the first naval members who proved that the Vast Empire Navy was a good thing – despite the erroneous, invective opinions of others (including my own at the time).  You then enlisted in the Army where your commendable activity set an excellent example amidst the frequent A.W.O.L. checks and personnel purges. Friendships drift apart: It is a sad fact of life.  But, thankfully, we have been endowed with the precious gift of being able to always reflect upon the pinnacle of our joyful friendships – warm friendships that are indelibly etched in our memories for a lifetime.  It is from this that I derive an assuasive sense of remuneration despite your leaving us. I have always considered you an unwavering beacon when the Vast Empire Army was in the straits of despair.  When the prior Prefects were in need of thoughtful guidance, you were always there to offer insightful advice.  In the dire times when I appeared almost friendless in the Vast Empire, you showed your emotional support for me at the risk of your own prestige and authoritative status.  Indeed, in a club that is built upon ambitions, ranks, and positions – you showed that compassion, sincerity, and friendship far overshadow them. I thank you for always being there for me and many others…  and for the invaluable contributions you have made to our gaming collective. I wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors throughout life.

I was looking through the ComNet and came upon this post.  It was saddening to my eyes and different thoughts began to reveal themselves.       Athran, News such as this about great, honorable, Vast Empire officials will always be hard to cope with.  I believe I speak for everyone in saying that: "The Vast Empire wouldn't be what it is today if it weren't for such great outstanding leaders such as yourself." In our world, both in VR and RL, Leaders are very hard to come by, but it is people like you...the leaders who make dreams become realities. It isn't everyday that I can meet someone with such discipline, maturity, and courtesy.  Ever since I joined the Vast Empire on September 2000, you were the Prefect, and you were still the Prefect until the 1st of December.  Let me tell you this: I am very honored to have been under your command all this time.  It is the leaders like you who make the followers want to command.  A person with your command position and rank are role-models for furture generations of the Vast Empire...I know you have been my role-model for all this time.  I cannot say that I have been honored to be your friend and under your command because the word "honor" is too small of a word for me to truly state what I believe "honor" stands for.  I can only hope that when the time comes for me to hold a command position over a division that I would be as great as a leader as you had been. Thank you for being my Leader, Role-model and Friend.
