'Then what, Blackstar. What happend with the you and the pirates?' asked Private Jennings. He and a dozen other new troops were gathered around Private First Class Kiara Blackstar. She was recanting tales of her childhood adventures in front of an audience.
'Well as we were leaving the surfa...'
'PRIVATE BLACKSTAR, REPORT!' Kiara jumped to attention followed quickly by the other privates in the bay. It was Kiara's squad leader, the sargent known simply as Merrick.
'I was assisting the new recruits in getting their gear put away, Sargent Merrick,' replied Kiara as she snapped to attention.
'Sounded to me like you were boring them with your life story. Were you doing that private?' asked Merrick.
'Yes, Sargent, we were swapping stories.'
'Then don't mind me,' said Merrick with a lopsided grin. 'I wanna hear how you, of all people, were a pirate. I still don't beleive it, no matter how many times Frog tells me he found a wanted poster with your mug on it.'
'Wanted poster? How much is the bounty?' asked Kiara, looking for any reason to brag about herself.
'Don't worry about it. It's only 10,000 credits alive. Only a hunter down on his luck would even consider it. Besides, I'm confident that you only harrased the Rebels and free merchants. No skin off the Empire's nose,' replied Merrick as she sat down on one of the few benches in the bay. 'Go on with your story. Nothing else is going on.'
'Ok, sarge. Well like I was saying, as we were lifing off, a patrol of CSA police were coming towards us. They were obviously armed and looking for someone or something to shoot. And it's a damn good thing I was in with the pirates or I probably would be dead. The mate who had come down to the surface to pick me up ordered all available hands to weapons. Since I didn't know where I stood with the Bloody Blades I just tried to stay out of the way. As I was doing my best at that, a old spacer grabbed my arm and pulled me down the corridor.
"You can shoot right?" he asked as he opened a hatch. I nodded. "Well here's an empty turret. Targeting comes from the bridge. Don't get yerself killed." And just like that he left.
I strapped myself into the harness and powered up the blasters. I recognised it as an old model from the Correlian yards. What it was doing on a beat up transport was beyond me, but hey, they were pirates. As soon as the turret was powered up, the blast shields had retracted and I was getting targeting information on the readout.
I heard a voice over the sounds of the engines. It was the chief gunner on the bridge. "ATTENTION ALL GUNNERS. MULTIPLE TARGETS ON GROUND AND IN THE AIR. FIRE AT WILL."
I looked at the readout and saw one target withing my firing arc. It was a military speeder with a anti-vehicle cannon on it. I brought my own blaster cannons to bear and started firing. After a few misses I scored a hit that disavbled it. More targets came including more speeders, atomospheric fighters and a few Z-95s. With all the fire power the pirate transport had, we were able to hold off the threats and leave the planet. Only a few fighters followed, but they were quickly dispatched. We were clear. After the short battle we made the jump the hyperspace. I stayed in the turret until the spacer who had thrown me in came back.
"Nice shooting kid. The Captain might make you a gunner on one of the ships. Now, though, you need to get out and find Gripe. He's the mate in charge of this ship and he probably wants to talk to you." I nodded again and unstraped myself from the turret.
I thanked him and left the compartment. The transport was an old Seiner Systems design and I was able to find the bridge without any help. I steped into the small bridge compartment and walked up to the person I could tell was in charge. I was expecting a man, perhaps with a shadow of a beard and a stern expression. Instead I was supprised. It was a woman, human, tall and dark. She had a goofy grin on her face and military short hair.
"You must be the package we picked up on that dustball back there right, names Gripe and I'm in charge of this ship, the Blade of Shadow. And you are?"
"My names Kiara and yes I was the package you picked up."
"What no last name, kid?" she asked. I shook my head. "Okay, well Kiara, no problem there. Gerring was pretty insistant we take you. Why though he didn't say. He only said it was important. But I'm the curious type. Why did you need to leave that planet in such a hurry?"
I thought for a moment about what I should tell her. I didn't think it would hurt to tell so I explained everthing to her, how I had killed some people in revenge and that the people were factory wrokers and would be investigated by the CSA athorities. It took a while to explain it as she kept asking me to repeat things. She wanted to know how I, a street rat as she called me, learned how to fight and kill. I answered her questions as best I could. As I finished she let out a low whistle.
"So Kiara No Name, you are a wanted criminal. Well thats good, you'll fit right in here with the rest of us. You are gonna have to explain to the Captain when we get to the Bloody Blade, but with this story I'm sure he'll let you stay with us. Now go find a place to rest. It will be a while till we get to the Bloody Blade." She turned back to commanding her ship as I left the bridge. I startd walking back to the turret I had manned. As I turned a corner I saw the helpful spacer.
"Okay, so now you've met Gripe. I'm the boarding master, Fellos. Find a berth down to corridor and crash. We won't be back home for a while." He wandered off and I did as he directed. Wow...I'm now a pirate.
