Only In Dreams
Part I

(OOC: This takes place before I was enlisted into the Vast Empire, a life before that no one knows about.  More like a background personal story.)

Squall was crouched down, looking at the troop transport.  It had been blown to pieces.  He grieved inside of himself, as he thought the friends, buddies, he just lost.  He stood up, and walked around the corner, and saw squadrons of enemy fighters flying overhead.  He was behind enemy lines, trying to rescue one of his best friends, James Marker.  James had gone in as a spy for a recon mission, when he was discovered, and placed into captivity.  Squall was deployed with a group of troopers, they were known as GOA, A group of handpicked soldiers that were some of the best in the Empire.  The Gods of Anarchy were deployed to rescue Marker, and destroy what was left of the resistance force that captured him, the ODB.  ODB was a large smuggling force that had been trying to overrun the planet for sometime.  Squall, was one of the members of GOA.  The rest of the group was just killed, from a suicide bomber, a man strapped with explosives.  He took out the transport that the team had been deployed with, killing everyone except for Squall.  He was now the only one left, no cover, and only the supplies he found on the dead bodies of his fallen comrades.

Squall looked down the valley ahead.  There was a bridge, and a small building right in front of it.  Just as he was looking down, another transport was going across the bridge.  A fighter came out of now where, and released 2 missiles, crushing the transport, and making a huge explosion.  Two soldiers emerged from the building, and spotted Squall.  He rolled to the left, and started firing at the two mercenaries.  He spotted another enemy transport that was running with the other but the other was blown up.  A soldier jumped out of the back, and started firing at Squall.  He took cover behind a rock, and started firing his rifle back at the 3 of them.  He killed the first two, but the other escaped, and got back into the transport.  Squall walked down the hill, into the valley.  He hovered over the dead bodies, looking for any supplies that he could use.  He found nothing.  He looked into the building behind him, and saw that no one was in it.  He went in, and saw a pack of rations.  He quickly picked them up, and put them in the pack on his back.  Squall ran up to the exploded transport, and looked around the side for anyone that could be coming. He saw nothing.

Squall pulled out the map from his pack, and decided to take the alternate route, because he had no cover.  Squall walked across the bridge, and turned to the right.  He saw another hill leading down into the valley.  He walked to the entrance of the valley, and saw two buildings that had gone to rubble to the left and the right.  He pulled out his binoculars, and scanned down the trench in-between the two walls of rock.  He spotted two solders, and quickly took cover to the right.  They started running down the trench toward him.  Squall took out one of his smoke grenades, and tossed it down the trench in front of him.  It gave him just enough time to run in, and take out the soldiers without them knowing where he was.  He ran through the smoke, and emerged on the other side.  He spotted the soldiers, and shot them both down with ease.  He kept running down the trench, right over the bodies, not checking for anything possible to use.

Once he arrived at the end of the trench, he peeked around the corner to the left, to see a huge bridge.  There was a very large outpost on the other side of the bridge, and it was well fortified with soldiers everywhere.  Squall ran down the side of the valley, and went prone as a soon as he saw a large tank-like emplacement.  It was circling its tower, looking for something to kill.  Squall pulled out his anti-tank mines.  He ran around, and circled the area of the tank where it was not facing.  He placed a mine on each side of the tank, so that it couldn't move without being blown to pieces.  He saw a hill that was going up to the left, and went on a dead sprint up it.  The tank tried moving as it spotted him, but was blown to pieces trying.  Suddenly, two enemy fighters flew overhead, circling around scanning the area for any enemies.  Squall took cover, ducking and rolling himself into a ball on the wall.  After the fighters were gone, he stood up.

Suddenly he felt a stabbing pain in his right arm.  He had been shot.  The blaster fire fried his skin. "ARGGGG," Squall yelled out in pain.  He went into his pack, and rapped it with some gauze quickly.  He took a bite from one of the rations, just as another soldier came running down the top of the hill, shooting at him.  Squall unloaded his rifle into the soldier, and didn't miss once, send the soldier into a darkness of death.  Another soldier came right after him, and another.  Squalled yelled out, and unloaded everything into the enemies, killing them both.  Squall ran to the top of the road, and saw a camp to the left.  Tents set up, and he could see a man sitting on the ground, eating something.  Squall pulled out is blade, and stealthily crawled up behind the enemy.  He wrapped his arms around the mans neck, and slit his throat quick.  He picked up a new rifle that he found on the ground, that had 5 magazines laying with it.  He ran out of the camp, and kept going down the road.  He spotted a barbed wire road block to the left, leading down a huge trench, then he looked to the left.  It's the transport from before! He thought to himself.  He ran behind it, and jumped on the back.  The soldier from before wasn't there anymore, so he hopped in the back.  He could see from the back of the transport, that they were going left in the fork of a road, which meant they were heading to where Marker was being held.  He saw a soldier, but hesitated to kill it, because it would alert the pilot of the transport.  He refrained from killing the soldier.

Squall stood up and peeked around the side of the transport, seeing the place where James was being held.  It was a small building, with an airstrip behind it.  He saw a fighter in the back area of the airfield, being prepped for flight. Within seconds, it lifted into the air, and took off.  Damn, I could have used that Squall thought to himself.  Then, the transport stopped, and Squall piled out of the back.  He grabbed his pistol, and walked around to the pilots side of the transport.  He shot the pilot in the head, and then shot the passenger soldier in the face, killing him instantly.  Squall pushed both of the soldiers into the back of the transport, and started driving it towards the outpost.  He put the throttle on full, and drove it right into the entrance of the place where James was being held.  He jumped out, right before it hit the wall, and killed the soldier standing guard at the cell.  He saw James standing there.

"What the hell took you so long man," he asked.

"The rest of the team&.they're&.dead." he said.  "All of them were killed by a suicide bomber, I am the only one left."

James hung his head, then quickly snapped back up.  "We have got to get out of there, there are sentries all around this area.  They are probably sitting right outside waiting for us to come out."  "Quick, get me out of here," he demanded.  Squall ran up to the cell, and entered the code that was on the piece of paper on a desk.  The cell opened, and James ran over to his weapons that were sitting in the corner.  His sniper rifle, some rations, and a small blaster.

"I'm ready to go," said James, just as a soldier walked into the room.  Squall shot him square in the forehead, dropping him instantly.  "We have to go through the outpost on the right road.  It's the only way out," said Squall.  "It is loaded with soldiers, so we are going to have to deal with them.  Also, we were instructed to take out the bridge after we had crossed, so no one could follow us," said Squall.

"Let's do this then," said James.  "Follow my lead," said Squall, and they exited the building.

Squall ran down the road, and James followed him, eating one of his ration packs on the way.  Squall ran up a road to the left, and James followed.  "Wow, from here we can see the whole outpost," he pointed down towards the building.  "First, we will have to take out the guard in that tower, and then the other soldier at the gun placement right there," he pointed again.  "You get on the gun, I'll take out the guard in the tower, and then you cover me while I cross the bridge, and find out what's on the other side.  Once it is clear, we will both meet in the center of the bridge.  I will plant the explosives on the center, we will blow the bridge, and the hell out of here," said Squall.

"You sure that this is going to work," said James

"If It doesn't, were finished." Said Squall.

The two men ran down the road, toward the outpost on the right side.  They ran around the corner, and went on a dead sprint for the small building to the right.  There was a soldier on the top of the building to the left, and James dropped him with a shot of his sniper rifle.  The man dropped off the side of the building.  Squall ran to the right, and took out the man at the gun position, and James took it over. James aimed his sniper rifle, and took out the man in the guard tower. Squall ran into the building, and checked for supplies.  He found some rations, and 1 magazine for his rifle.  He ran out, and James started firing at the soldiers who were trying to cross the bridge.  Just then, two soldiers came out of the building to the right, and started shooting at James.  He took a shot to the leg, and fell down in agony.

"Get back up to that gun James, or we'll both be dead!" yelled Squall.  James ripped off a piece of his shirt, and got back on the gun.  He started yelling and shooting at the same time, dropping soldiers left and right.  Squall took out the two men who had emerged from the building with one of his many grenades.  Squall told James to keep firing, because soldiers just kept coming out of the barracks on the other side.  Squall went on a dead sprint down the bridge, with James' line of fire flying right beside him.  He placed the satchel right on the middle of the bridge.  He started shooting at the soldiers coming out of the barracks, and soon there were no more.  He waved his hand to signal that James could follow.  James ran up to Squall, and they both started running down the bridge.  Once they arrived at the end of the bridge, Squall ran into the barracks.  He found a portable missile launcher, and 2 magazines for his blaster rifle.  He came running out of the barracks, just as another one of the tank-like things came into site on the end of the bridge, about 10 feet away.  Squall and James took cover behind the building.  Squall spun out around the right side of the building with the missile launched shouldered.  He pulled the trigger, and released the missile right into the tank.  He dove back right behind the building to take cover, and the building shook from a shockwave.

Squall and James ran from the building down the road, to the building where Squall killed the two men at the beginning of the mission.  They hid inside, and used the radio to call for an evac.  Squall took his detonator in his hand, and pushed the red button.  The bridge blew into pieces, trapping any troops or transports from coming towards the area where they were.  James stood up.

"I have the transport our quardanents. They will be here at the LZ in 5 minutes, where you were dropped off," said James.

Squall and James ran up the hill behind the building, and saw a red trail of smoke.  A transport was coming down from the sky, arriving right where they were to pick them up.  It hovered about 7 feet from the ground with a door open.  A trooper was standing there, beckoning them in.  They both climbed into the transport, and started for they're way home.

Squall walked down the ramp, with his pack over his shoulder.  A medic ran in, with his pack, and attempted to help Squall and James.  They both waved him off, and made their way to the de-briefing room.  Once they arrived, the commander looked at Squall and James.

"Squall, the rest of the team was killed in an accident I hear," asked the commander.  "Yes commander, a suicide bomber strapped with explosives blew the transport, I was outside of the transport when It happened," said Squall.

Squall hung his head, and a tear ran down his face.  He wiped it quickly, so no one realized that he was crying.  He looked back at the commander.

"I take full responsibility for what happened," said Squall.  "It was my fault."

The commander slammed his fist on the table, making an indention.  "No, it's not you're fault Squall.  We heard rumors that there would be an attack on the vessel, but they were just rumors.  Then, when this happened, I realized that It was my fault, and that you would try and take the blame.  I take the blame, not you," said the commander.  "I am resigning from my position as commander of GOA, and you are taking my position&for your brave efforts, and persistent work within the GOA,"

"But, commander&," Squall was cut off by the commander.  "You will not try to talk me into coming back, the team is yours now.  I must leave.  Goodbye Squall," said the commander.  He stood up from his desk, grabbed his bag, and left.  Squall walked over to the desk, took off his helmet, and laid it down.  "James&.what should I do," he asked.

"Take the position.  We can scout for new recruits, and get the team running again.  I know that this will be hard for you, but we need to do this.  GOA needs to keep its contract with the empire for another 2 years.  After that, our 15 years of service will be over, and we will be free."

"I understand.  We will start drafting in a week.  From now till then, we will re-organize.  Everything will change.  Call the academy.  Tell them to start recruiting quickly.  We will go down there next week and see how things are going."

Squall ordered James out of the room, to go get started. Squall stood up, and took off his armor.  He went to the restrooms, and took a shower.  He emerged, with his officers' uniform on.  He walked into his room, and called the butler droid.  He told the droid to re-organize everything in the room in the order he wanted.

About 30 minutes later, it was finished.  He sat down at his desk, put his feet up on the desk, and put his laptop on his lap.  He looked into the academy page.  Listing were the recruits that they already had, and their skills. Squall picked out the recruits he wanted, and created the roster.

1 Week Later

Squall sat in the pilots seat of the shuttle, and James sat in the Co-Pilots seat.  Squall flipped some switches, and the shuttle gently set down on the ground.  He shut it down, and then exited the shuttle, along with James.  They walked into the barracks area, and saw Tina, Jon, and Magnus.  They were sitting, talking amongst themselves.  Tina looked spotted them, and stood up.  Magnus stared at them with his black eyes, and Jon followed Tina.  Tina and Jon saluted, and Magnus just sat there.

"Where's the rest of the team?" asked Tina.  "Yea," said John

"They were lost in the last mission.  All of them except James and I.  Levi Resigned as commander, and gave the position to me," said Squall

"Levi resigned? Why," asked Tina.

"He felt that it was his fault for the loss of the team," said Squall.

Squall sat down at the table, and the rest of the team circle around.

"We are organizing a new team," said Squall.  "You three are our pick."

Magnus lifted his head.  "What happened to the rest?" he said with a deep tone in his voice.

"They were killed by a suicide bomber.  There was nothing I could do to rescue them, my mission was to get James out, and blow the outpost."

So, we are the only ones left?" asked Jon.  "Us five?"

"Correct Jon, I am terribly sorry about the loss of the rest of the team.  But we are the only people left, and need to carry out our duty for the next 2 years until our tour is over," said Squall.  "If everyone is in, please sign these papers, as we will be the new team of GOA."

Tina looked at the paper for a few minutes.  "I'm in," she said, and signed her name in the selected area.  Jon quickly signed the paper, and passed it to Magnus.  Magnus lifted his head, and stared at Squall with his black eyes.  "I'm in," he said "You're life is in my hands."  James signed, and Squall initialed his name at the bottom.

Training starts tomorrow.  We will be running Sims until our first mission, almost all day, every day.  New programs have been downloaded.  Everyone will start in their specialty.  There is a list on the wall in the barracks back at base of everyone's specialty, and the Sims they need to run, and pass.  We will be leaving tomorrow morning, early, so everyone get a good night's sleep.  I have some other things to attend to, so don't waste you're time doing nothing," said Squall.

James, Jon, Tina, and Magnus all left together.  Squall walked into the commander's room, and looked it over.  He turned on some music, and started to doze off.  His eyes grew heavy, and soon enough, he was sleeping&

The next morning&.

The shuttle lifted off with the team of GOA inside.  Squall pulled back on the controls, and the shuttle rotated as they lifted out of the academy.  Squall inched the throttle up to full speed, and they shot up into the atmosphere.  After arriving in space, Squall stopped the shuttle, and placed in the quardanents for the base.  After placing them in, he told the team that they would be coming out of hyper space in 10 hours&.

After arriving at the base, the team got off board, and went to the barracks.  Squall went to his area, and suited up for Simulation.  He placed his armor vest on, and grabbed his E-11/H blaster rifle.  He walked into the simulation area, and saw the rest of the team ready for simulation.  They were doing one of the missions that GOA had previously accomplished, and placed into a program.  It was the Safe Passage Scenario.  Everyone except for Squall and James had run it before.  It was one of the toughest simulation missions they could run.  Maybe I am putting them into this to fast Squall thought to himself.  They'll be able to handle it.

Squall handed out the virtual helmets to the team, and placed one on his head.  His long hair hung out the back, but he didn't care.  Squall went over to the panel in the middle of the simulation room.  He put in the program, and loaded it into everyone's virtual helmets.  He flipped 2 switches, and the simulation was ready. "Everyone ready?" he asked. "HO RAH" said the team.

The desert sun broke onto Squall's like of vision.  "People, your mission is to find the refugee, take out the rebel forces, and evacuate this area.  I already know this scenario, so I am going to be the enemy.  James will be leading you guys, pick you're way to do the scenario.  If you die, you fail.  If the refugee dies, you all fail.  Now, bring it on!

James led the pack, Tina, Jon, and Magnus.  "Shall we go by the book, or make this one up?" asked James.  "Book, because that's all I know," said Tina.  The others agreed.  They would split up in 2 teams.  James, Tina, and Jon on one team, and Magnus on another.

Magnus jumped to the rooftop and surveyed the city.  He spotted infantry to the right, and left, behind, and in front.  The whole team was surrounded.  He notified James of the areas of the infantry, and set out to find out where the heavy weapons were located.

Meanwhile, Squall took out his sniper rifle, and scanned the area.  He spotted Magnus on the rooftop, moving quickly and jumping from building to building.  He was searching for something.  The gun placements he though to himself.  I'll send some troops in there and make sure he doesn't try anything.  He kept his scope on Magnus, watching his every move.

Magnus peeked down over the building to see the gun placement right under him, with 3 rebel soldiers guarding it.  He slipped his light saber out of the sleeve of his trench coat, and did a back flip off the building, activating his light saber on the way down.  He made 2 swift cuts, taking off all 3 heads of the rebel troops.

James ordered Tina and Jon to follow him.  They made their way through the alleys, taking out any resistance that challenged them easily.  James pulled out his binoculars, and looked down one of the alleys, towards a large bunker on the north side of the city.  That was one of the main areas of infantry, and Squall could be commanding the mission from there.  He tried to remember his readings of the Scenario&..A ha! He thought.  Squall is in the bunker.  "Jon, mark that bunker for an air strike, Immediately.  Jon brought out the marker, and designated the targeting point.  After setting the directions, he heard the bomber come from above, and release its bombs, crushing the bunker.  James looked around the area for Squall to emerge, and just then he saw a rebel commander flying out of the bunker, it was Squall.  The commander pulled out his rifle, and started scanning the area.  He spotted the team.  "Take Cover!" he yelled.  Jon took a shot right square in the head, and Tina took one in the arm.  Damn he's good thought James.  "We lost Jon!" he yelled.  "!@$#"

Tina, we have to keep moving, or we will be picked of just like Jon.  Quick, make you're way over here, and we will fix that.  When they were finished, they made their way around the other side of the city, and only encountered one pocket of resistance.  They spotted Squall moving to the opposite side of the city, searching for something.  "He's looking for Magnus," said Tina  "There is practically nothing we can do to save him, we need to get the refugee, and get out of here.  Tell Magnus that Squall is searching for him, and then we'll go get the refugee."

"Mag, this is James.  Squall is right on your ass, watch yourself," said James.

Magnus&you're somewhere around here, I can feel you thought Squall.  You can hear my thoughts, come get me.  Magnus flipped out from the alley, blasting Squall with his rifle.  Squall dove to the right, unloading his whole magazine into Magnus.  Magnus dropped his blasters, and his body fell to its knees.  Then fell face first into the ground.
"Magnus, you could have done better than that," said Squall.

"Tina, there is the refugee, there, behind that market stand hiding," said James pointing.  "You go get him, I'll look out.

Tina ran over behind the market stand, and got he refugee into her control.  Just then, Squall came out from behind the market stand to the right, and plastered Tina into the market stand.  He started firing at James, but missed.  The refugee followed James into his hiding place.  "Refugee, no matter what, follow me.  We are going to run for the LZ," said James.  The refugee nodded his head, and James stood up.  He spun out around the side of the building and opened fire.  He keyed his headset, "Transport one, we need an evac at the LZ right now!" he yelled.

James sprinted down the alley to the left, and the refugee followed.  They started cutting through yards, heading straight for the LZ.  James looked up and saw the transport coming down.  James spotted the LZ about 100 feet away.  He turned around and saw Squall standing there with his rifle, aiming at the two of them.  Squall opened fire into them, and they rolled away.  James stood up, and went on a dead sprint towards the LZ.  The refugee looked like he had been shot in the leg, but Squall couldn't tell.  The both of them kept running.  Squall pulled out his sniper rifle, and took careful aim at James.  He then shifted his crosshairs over to the refugee.  He pulled the trigger once, and shot the refugee square in the back.  James bend down, and slug the refugee over his back.  He was still alive, breathing heavily.  He only had minutes to live, if that, unless he got medical attention.

The transport was hovering about 5 feet above the ground.  James was running as fast as he could, about 20 feet away from the transport.  Squall set his sights right on James back, where the heart was.  James was about 10 feet away, when the shot pierced into his body.  The refugee was tossed into the transport, and the doors closed.  James struggled to get up, but Squall stood over his body, with his gun pointed on the Squall's head.  Just then, a black figure flew out from the right, and sliced the air once.  Squall fell to the ground.  It was Magnus.  James got up, and opened the door of the transport.  Magnus caught James just before he fell trying to get into the transport.  He threw James in, and got into the transport.  It took off.  As the transport lifted into the air, everything went black.  The simulation had ended.

Squall pulled of his helmet to see the rest of the team standing their, sweaty, tired, and overworked.  "That&.was not by the book," he said laughing.  "You guys did a great job.  Magnus, how did you pull that off?

"I pretended to die, and you bought it.  After you left, I hid on the rooftops, following your every move.  I could tell that you were going after James, Tina, and the refugee.  I sensed the anger in your mind, which made me laugh, because you had no idea that I was coming back," said Magnus laughing.

"Well, you got me," said Squall.  "Nice job everyone, good simulation run.  We will do it again for the rest of the week.  He walked over to the panel, and shut it down.  "Our first mission is in 2 weeks.  You'll be briefed about it then.  Otherwise, I want no talk to the mission if you find out anything.  You need to focus on your training and survival methods.  If you have any questions, just come see me."  Squall exited the room, and made his way to his bunks.  He undressed, and got into bed.  He stared into the darkness for about an hour, trying to fall asleep, and finally he fell unconscious&.

The training went on for 2 weeks, and the time for the mission was getting closer and closer.  Squall and James worked together almost every day, figuring out what to do for the new mission, and finally came up with something.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day before 1st Mission&.

Squall walked into the briefing room, and was greeted by his fellow squad mates.  They all looked healthy, and ready for combat.

"As many of you probably already know, this mission is a daring one.  On one of the GOA's covert-operations last year, we were tricked by one of our own, a deserter.  Some of you may have heard of him, and some of you haven't.  His name is& Squall paused for a moment.  Dale Crower.  He was a great soldier, and a well trusted one, until this mission went wrong.  We closed his case a few months afterwards, because we lost track of him.  Recently, we got word from one of our outside sources that he was making an uprising on the planet of Ren Varr.  He has started a group that call themselves the Right Wing of the Empire.  We all know that they have nothing to do with the Empire, and are strictly a herecy.  The Empire wants them, we want them.

Some of the team looked hesitant, other's looked confident.  Squall walked up to the briefing board.

"Our Primary objective: Find and capture Crower.  If he attempts to resist, use any force necessary to capture him.  Second Objective: wire the base to explode, so that there will be no trace of them left.  Basically, that it.  Rules of Engagement:  This needs to be stealthy, not going in hot.  We don't want them to know that we have arrived.  If our cover is blown, the operation is over.  If Crower is killed, the operation is over.  If we take 2 kills, operation is over.  Once everything is complete, you will steal one of the shuttles from the hanger to get home.  Tina, you fly.  Everyone report to the hanger at 1600 hours tomorrow morning. Does everyone comprehend," asked Squall.

They all nodded their heads.  Squall walked over, and turned the monitor off.  Everyone left but Squall.  Do I deserve this position as Commander of GOA? He asked himself.  I hope Levi is doing alright.  What a great man he was...

(DAMNIT....it keeps doing this. With the squares.  Will someone help me out with this..)
