  DeepSix: Zero-G Combat

A long time ago, before Bloodmoon was vandalized by the Vast Empire's Naval Intelligence service, before Abrae was shadowed by the humongous Allegiance class Super Star Destroyer, before Belgaroth made a killing on selling off scrap metal procured from the many carcasses of both New Republic and Imperial Remnant forces alike, before a lot of other major events occurred there was a time when a promising young Squadron Commander was forced - against his wishes - to undergo a Zero Gravity course. The reason for that decision would remain a complete mystery until the present day, just how the man's opinion of the course also remained unchanged to this very day...

"Think I'm gonna be sick", a Human male managed to speak before quickly raising his hands to cover his mouth and rushing off to the nearest restroom. The Human male was not Seth Qorbin however, rather it was some nameless sod which the man encountered upon presenting himself for duty. Needless to say that the encounter further annoyed the Onderonian SC - the man quickly trying to recall just what the devil had he consumed for breakfast and whether he should visit the restroom before and on his own terms, rather than after and forced to do so by circumstance outside his control.

"Next", a Warrant Officer called out and seeing nobody else standing around and seemingly waiting for something to happen Seth stepped up. "Name?" the same WO asked in a bored fashion - typical and quite frequent in underpaid and overworked pencil pushers. "Seth Qorbin", the blond Squadron Commander introduced himself. "The one and only", he smiled and continued. The joke however had no effect whatsoever on the other man whom instead clicked his datapad and scrolled down a list until he suddenly stopped and clicked an entry. "Get in", he invited in the same apathetic tone of voice.

The two men entered the large room and before Seth had a chance to ask what would happen next the other man pointed to a door opening a few steps down. Meanwhile the Warrant Officer climbed a different set of stairs, twirling around and by the looks of it ending a whole level above.

Not giving the architectural detail too much importance however Qorbin set forth and entered the circular room which was quite spacious to his surprise. He was already wearing his flight suit, as he had been instructed beforehand, so the man only had to put on his helmet when the Warrant Officer asked him to seal up, at the same time warning that the room would depressurize, thus trapping him inside while that happened.

Seeing no major harm in standing in a small locked room that quickly was deprived of all oxygen reserves, Seth nodded his approval and sealed his helmet on, allowing the suit's life support systems to take over. When he was done the man raised a thumbs up and watched as the Warrant Officer nodded once. Only a few seconds more passed before the doors were locked, a couple of yellow lights began flashing and the sound of air being sucked out of the room ominously echoed all around the trapped Squadron Commander.

Who said the Navy doesn't know how to have a good time? the man asked himself as he waited for whatever came next. Luckily - or unluckily - he did not have to wait for long as soon enough he felt his body slowly lifting off the ground. Always knew these bastards aren't feeding us enough...

"Try to move around", the voice instructed and Seth wanted to provide a snide reply mostly inquiring as to how the devil was he supposed to do that given the fact he could now only wobble about in midair. He tried to turn and twist and even jump and dive but no matter what he did Seth still remained in the same position - slowly floating about. Finally he relaxed enough to notice that unlike what he had thought at first he was in fact moving - just very, very, very slowly and upwards thanks to the tiny momentum he got when he was lifted off the ground.

When five minutes later the man was about to reach the ceiling the man pulled in his arms and suddenly pushed them out next, giving himself a good push off the hard surface. That sent him downwards, and thirty seconds later he was able to push off the floor instead. It took the man about three or four full minutes - as well as a lot of bouncing off the walls - before finally he was able to get from one side of the room to the other in less than ten seconds.

"Good enough", the Warrant Officer muttered and soon afterward gravity once more returned to the room. Next oxygen was pumped in and when the room was back in the same condition Seth had found it in, the doors unsealed and allowed him to exit. Apparently that was enough for the first day. The day after he would end up learning about tackling and disarming an unfortunate trooper that had been volunteered for the purpose of the exercise. Finally during the third day of the annoying exercises Seth would learn the very basics about Zero-G armor as well as even be allowed to touch the thing. Not wear and take out for a spin of course - just touch, glare and drool on it...

Why the bloody hell am I remembering such things now? the Lieutenant thought to himself as he turned on the side and closed back his eyes, trying to get back to a hopefully dreamless sleep.
