  Rome II: Total War

The RTS gamer inside of me begs to ask who all will be thinking of getting this game. The first Rome meant a lot to me, so naturally I'm excited about this one.

Yes, I must ask even though release is probably a very long ways off. (Tentatively estimated Christmas 2013)

The graphics look stunning. Color me impressed. Very impressed. Even without the story line, I might just think about getting it for the graphics... Storyline and all the other nifty features are probably going to be icing on the cake.

For those of you who are not aware, the Total War series has two layers of strategy: a turn-based overall Campaign map and a real-time strategy Battle map. To actually be good at the game, you have to be at least decent in one and excellent at the other. Or just be good in both.

For those of you who already know Total War series, here are the claims from Creative Assembly:

1. They've split up provinces into regions, while still leaving provinces intact. No longer do you have to attack/defend one city. To control an entire province, you have to control all of its regions. Conversely, you no longer lose a province to just one attack. No, you do not have to micro-manage these regions, apparently.

2. Um, bigger map. You remember the old Rome map (ya know, the one with all of Europe, West Asia, Middle East, and North Africa)? Bigger than that. /me pauses for a moment.

3. Army History. Yes! No longer do only your generals gain history, but also the army itself. No more worrying about losing all your fame with the careless death of a single person... Negative traits for an army are still up in the air, though.

4. Navies will be able to capture sea-side regions. No longer just ferry boats.

5. Better AI. Do I have permission to be scared?

On to the more meaty stuff, such as gameplay videos:
Clicky (Youtube)

I think after 0:19 it is completely in-game graphics and mechanics, but definitely completely in-game after 0:30.

Impressive, no?

And the IGN articles:

Clicky 2

So begins the year of hoping that Creative Assembly does not mess this up. Anyone with me?

I loved Rome: Total War, and Napoleon Total War was a pretty good game as well, though I enjoyed having the ability to ram cavalry into the side of infantry and watching the barbarian scum fly into the air. I'm hoping it's a good game, though it seems that they are doing very well so far. A bigger question to ask is where to go from Rome: Total War II. Perhaps one about mythology, or one going from ancient times up to the 1600s with the rise of gunpowder armies. Maybe another Medieval: Total War, or an English Civil War Total War. Point being, they can't go anywhere later than where they got with the last Total War. A World War I Total War would be boring, there are so many WWII RTS games (Company of Heroes 2, cannot wait), and then you get into modern day.

Anyways, I hope to pick up this game, and from what you've said, it sounds like an awesome game. I still enjoy playing R:TW, more than N:TW, even though the latter has better technology in respects of the game system.

@Heliwer: Yeah, R:TW being so great was the thing that made me really take notice of this. Hell, I didn't even have to dust off my CDs for it, when I got the urge to play it yesterday for reasons unknown...

I had paid attention to Shogun II & Medieval II coming out, but Rome...Rome was just on a different level. All those different cultures and unit availabilities... Cut it anyway you wish, neither Shogun nor Medieval can produce that variety.

@Ech:
I don't know. I like the fact that your soldier is bashing in somebody's face with a sword as a norm instead of the exeception. That, and the fact that I love the pleasure trapping the enemy on bridges and then firing flaming rocks at them... I don't think either of yours is going to deliver that.

But...to each, their own.

I just like the whole West Point tactics kind of thing, being very orderly and such.

Eh. It's probably just my mindset for the Total War games. I have trouble seeing one weapon (guns) as the centerpiece of the game.

Hmm, my newest addition to my list of things I liked in R:TW--the plethora of weapons. Including flaming Onager rocks. Especially flaming Onager rocks.
