The squad leader watched with pride as Terre calmly strode into the cafeteria, blaster firing shots into the husks. He smiled as a few more members of Eclipse followed. He hefted his pistols and walked into the room after them, adding his own fire to the raging storm of lasers. Another one of those piercing cries rang out through the facility as Eclipse slaughtered the husks. One of the Class Ones were able to duck under the firestorm of blasts close enough to Skarr. The lieutenant holstered the pistol in his right hand and grabbed the creature by its throat. The thing thrashed about, trying to dislodge Skarr’s hand, but the man would not let go.

His arm strained as he lifted the husk above his head and slammed it to the ground, releasing salvo after salvo into the thing’s head. When the creature was dead, the young man grabbed his pistol again and went back to work. Within minutes, the cafeteria was silent. The squad looked no worse for wear, which Skarr was thankful for. No new injuries had cropped up among them, although it looked as if some of the older injuries were starting to bother them. The squad leader noticed his chest wound was bleeding once again.

“Alright, we’re going to lock down this room for a few minutes. The injured need to be looked over again. Balac, Terre, Beta, Meteora, and myself are going to check out the rest of the cafeteria for any hidden muties. Therex, look over Razor and Hammerhead. I’ll be back to be looked at.” Skarr snapped out the orders quickly. The squad responded quickly. Terre, Balac, and Meteora headed back to kitchens, while Skarr and Beta looked over the rest of the cafeteria. Skarr and Beta checked all the exits and closed them for the time being.

Balac’s group came back to report the all clear in the kitchens. Skarr nodded and walked over to Therex. “I think I need a new bandage.” The Chiss nodded and sat the squad leader down on one of the tables. The glowing red eyes swept over Skarr, taking note of the deep cut and the blood and pus seeping from the wound. The Lance Corporal rooted through his medical bag, grimacing all the while. Skarr guessed the Chiss was quickly running out of supplies.

Therex looked around the room before leaning in towards Skarr, “We need to get extracted fast. I don’t have much more in my bag. We could lose someone if they get seriously hurt.” The squad leader nodded grimly. He expected as much. Somehow, the squad had to make it to the landing pad outside of the visitor’s center without getting into any fights at all. That was the only way Skarr could figure out how to get the squad away with no more injuries. He hoped it would work. The visitor’s center was not far from the cafeteria, only a few halls away.

The medic finished up with his work and gave Skarr a clap on the shoulder. The human man nodded to him gratefully and stood, feeling slightly woozy. The map on his HUD was mapping all possible routes to the visitor’s center. The only problem was that Skarr did not know which halls contained mutants. Knowing his luck, there would be some in every hallway. He only hoped the number was manageable. If there were only two Class Ones lurking about in a hall, Skarr and one of the other squad mates could take them out without blaster fire.

At a quick command, the HUD began mapping the fastest route. Skarr watched the green line trace through the halls. He frowned slightly, looking at the image. A chance would have to be taken going through any of the passageways. Eclipse had to get to their destination somehow, meaning that Skarr had to risk running into a group of mutants. More cries rang out, followed by blaster fire. The Eclipse leader couldn’t decide whether a SCOPE team or squad of regular Stormies had ran across the super mutant. Whoever they were, Skarr did not envy them. He was torn by the decision to not help the squad that even now had to be torn apart.

In truth, Skarr was terrified of the immensely powerful super mutant. He thought it was rational to fear something he could not kill. He realized that he had not even tried to kill the super mutant yet. They had just ran. Skarr began to wonder if that was his fear that led him to flee or the concern for his squad. Whichever feeling it was, Skarr decided that he was not going to face the super mutant if he could help it. His first concern was getting his squad out, the super mutant would be taken care of by the orbital bombardment. Skarr noticed time was running out.

“Eclipse! We have to be moving now! Gear up and pair up like we have been. We move in two minutes, no more.” Skarr’s voice rang through the cafeteria as the order was given.

Terre felt another adrenaline rush, proud of herself for leading the charge. She had remained calm... And she hadn't missed. She looked over the squad, feeling as though she had another family. For now, she took off her helmet. Feeling a hand on her elbow, she looked up, beaming. It was Skarr. Her squad leader pulled her off to one side.

He looked older than he had when this mission began. He seemed tired, worn out. His brow was furrowed as he glanced up at his squad, a reflexive action. Terre's grin faded.

"What's up?" she asked, concerned.

"Listen," he said softly, his voice steady, only his eyes betraying his exhaustion. "We need to get out of here. We're all tired, and there's not much more we can do."

Terre nodded solemnly, sighed, pulled her helmet back on, then chuckled. "Dinner's on you," she teased, heading out the door and signalling for the squad to follow her.

Skarr smiled at her optimistic attempt at humor. Terre was something of an enigma to him and to others, he was sure, at times so cheery, at others so melancholy... And she seemed to know it. She wasn't bipolar, her mood swings weren't quite that severe. She was simply an enigma.

Currently, she seemed to be in her element, leading the squad, in a position of some authority. Skarr took up the back, watching Razor and HammerHead, who were beginning to lag. Therex was just in front of them, then Balac, Beta, and Meteora, and finally, in the front, Terre. She was confident, calm, collected...

Terre walked into the visitor's center, both pistols drawn, fresh cartridges in each. It was surprisingly clear.

"Everyone, spread out, in teams, if you will. Always have at least one person at your back, and keep your comms open," Terre instructed. Therex was her most obvious choice, and she beckoned him over. Beta and HammerHead wound up together, while Balac paired off with Razor. Skarr and Meteora stood next to each other, Skarr appearing edgy at the emptiness, Meteora expressing her distrust with folded arms.

"Right," Skarr said. "Each of you start clearing this place out. This is our final stand, ladies and gents." Everyone nodded, the atmosphere serious. "Let's go, Eclipse. Move out."

Terre and Therex moved off down one side of the vast center. Terre holstered one of her pistols, wanting to keep a free hand. She was on edge, very jumpy, turning on her own shadow. A book fell off of one of the shelves, and she reached out with her free hand, catching it before it fell. As she put it back on the shelf, she happened to catch movement out of the corner of her eye.

"HOLY--!" she swore. "REX!"

A Class One stood not three feet from her, grinning it's lax-jaw smile, several others of its kind behind it. It reached out for her with one hand, and she danced backwards, her boots fighting for traction on the dusty floor.

"REX!" she screamed again. He was by her side in an instant, blaster firing. Terre aimed up, firing several shots into the Class One before it finally fell to the ground. With Therex by her side, she felt braver somehow. Together, they mowed through the Class Ones, leaving their corpses on the floor to rot. Terre turned to Therex, grateful, but he was already moving on. He hadn't spoken to her since they walked into the visitor's center. She followed his lead, following close behind him, the hair on the back of her neck raised, some primal instinct awakened in her.

The voice hadn't spoken in a while. It was still in her head, but she hardly noticed it. It seemed preoccupied, busy. She could still feel it, though, and she thought it was moving with incredible speed.

And that's what makes it super... she thought.

Therex was moving quickly, moving lightly for such a large being. Terre was almost having a hard time keeping up. She kept right on his heels, not wanting to be left alone even for a moment. He headed up the wrap-around style steps to the second tier. Terre paused for a moment at the bottom to catch her breath, then headed up. Hearing something behind her, she spun, skipping backwards a couple steps. Another Class One was behind her, dragging its way up the steps, following her. It shrieked with laughter when Terre tripped, doubling its efforts to follow her. Terre found she was shaking like a leaf, unable to bring her blaster to bear.

So this is how it ends...

She felt a knee to the back of her spine, heard a blaster's report, saw the now-headless Class One fall backwards. Therex helped her up, dragging her to her feet by one arm.

"Thank you," she breathed, looking up at him, the stairs only adding to his height.

"Not a problem. Just please be more careful," he chided, his deep voice soft. She nodded, following him once more up the steps, blaster still in her right hand, her left stubbornly holding onto his arm. She stopped him when they got to the top of the stairs.

"I'm scared, Therex," she confessed, looking dubiously at the doorway in front of them.

"I know," he murmured. "But you're a strong girl. You can handle this. You didn't have a problem back in the cafeteria. You can do this." She nodded, swallowing hard. She released his arm, pulling her other blaster out and aiming up with the door. Therex pushed it open with his foot.

They were greeted by the sight of a Class Three finishing a human carcass, presumably a bookkeeper or some such individual. Terre felt her gag reflex kick in, and she forced her stomach out of her throat. It growled in pleasure, settling back on its haunches, gore covering its chest. Terre felt a tremor go through her.

Suddenly, the thing went on point, sniffing intently. Its head snapped up towards the door. It saw Therex and Terre outside, shook itself, stood up, and roared, long and loud.

"Time to go!" Terre yelped, dashing for the stairs.

Therex scrambled after Terre, making a mad dash for the stairs. Miscalculating for the pull of gravity on a 260 some pound mass, he picked up too much momentum, slamming into the steel guard rail. He turned quickly, firing a couple shots into the massive creature now running after them, to no avail. Terre was already halfway down the stairs, moving faster than Therex had ever seen her, leaving him alone to fight the creature.

“Slow down!” he yelled, hobbling along the rail, regaining his balance. She didn’t seem to hear him, and continued sprinting, putting distance between them. “At least shoot at it,” he yelled, motioning with both arms towards the lumbering beast while still running. She heard that bit, and spun on the heel of her foot, stopping her completely. Quickly, she dropped to one knee, bracing her arm against her raised leg, balancing the barrel in the palm of her hand, aiming, and firing at the creature with deadly accuracy.

Another Class Three, this one a small one, lean, but abnormally strong, dropped off of a bookshelf, landing next to Terre, almost with the sound of wet cloth. It grabbed her, startling her, trying to snap her neck. She immediately dropped the blaster, prying at its fingers, trying to relieve the increasing pressure on her spine. Even with her reinforced gloves, Therex saw it was taking all of her strength to keep it from crushing her windpipe.

“BACK OFF!” she growled through gritted teeth, not expecting it to respond. It didn’t of course, rather pulling her closer, its tongue playing over her helmet, leaving trails of thick, grey, mucus on her visor.

Therex fired some more shots into the large Class Three chasing him, catching it in the knee and slowing it down, then fired at the smaller Class Three who had its hold on Terre. He landed several shots, angering it, and giving Terre a chance to recover her blaster. It threw Terre to one side, stalking towards Therex. He groaned, suddenly at a loss as to which creature he should take care of first. He had his own problem with the brute chasing him, and now he had Skinny McMuscles bearing down from the other direction.

Terre made the decision for him. She got up off the ground, her hand still grasping the blaster, and threw herself at the small one ambling towards him, her knife in her other hand. She clamped her arms around its neck, hauling herself onto its back, shoving her knife through the soft skin at the back of the throat, severing nerve ending unnecessary for any and all primary bodily functions, including motor skills. As it slumped to the floor, almost like a pile of rags, Terre removed the knife and left the disembodied head to thrash and gnaw as it's last electric impulses died out.

Therex whipped around, firing repeatedly at the large monster that remained. It rumbled angrily, picking up speed, barely limping on it's damaged knee. He cursed loudly, rolling out of the way at the last second. The thing skidded past him, growling loudly, sliding along the floor as it tried to come to a stop. It stopped about a few meters away, growling menacingly. They circled each other for a few moments before Therex took a running start and leapt.

The monster drew itself to its full height, and Therex landed directly in front of it, his revolver drawn. Driving it upwards, Therex shoved it through the teeth of the lumbering brute, tapping the soft palate, and squeezed the trigger. A hole appeared at the crown of the skull, issuing forth a fountain of grayish-red gore. It gave a low, rumbling death rattle, its eyes clouding over, slumping to the floor, with a much louder thud than the last one. Therex holstered his gun, then drew his blaster rifle and fired into its temple repeatedly, making sure his job was finished. He didn't let up the stream of fire until the head was a mere charred pulp on the floor. Turning, he saw Terre sliding her knife back into her boot, the Class Three effectively decapitated. She took her helmet off and looked up at him, making eye contact before bursting out in uncontrollable laughter.

“We did it!” she crowed happily, running towards him. Therex had just enough time to swing his blaster rifle out of the way, before he was forced to catch her. She leapt into his arms, laughing gleefully. Two Class Threes versus the two humanoids, and they had done it. They had won. Terre’s laugh was infectious, and Therex caught himself chuckling, not out of joy, but just a nervous-like laugh. She pulled away slightly as he set her on the ground. She looked deep into his red eyes, and he bent close. Their lips met for the briefest of instants, then both pulled away. Terre giggled nervously, grabbing her helmet from the floor where she dropped it, then shuffled her feet.

“Uhm. We should probably…” She trailed off, fidgeting with her helmet.

“Let’s go find Skarr,” Therex murmured, looking straight past Terre. “We’re done here.” Terre nodded, putting her helmet back on, blushing furiously.

Was it really that unpleasant? Therex wondered, looking at the short girl curiously.

Why did that have to be so pleasant? Terre groaned inwardly, mentally kicking herself around the visitor’s center. He wouldn’t feel that way about me, would he?

I couldn’t possibly feel that way about her, could I? Therex was confused. She’s just a friend, he told himself firmly. Just a friend and comrade. Nothing more.

He definitely thinks of me as a friend, Terre thought, glancing up at the tall alien, who was still refusing eye contact. Fine, then. He’s just a friend to me, too. That’s… That’s all.

She can only be a friend, he decided, glancing down at the short human when he was sure she wasn't looking. We’ll have to talk later…

Terre sighed heavily. We will DEFINITELY need to talk later…

They soon arrived back in the middle of the visitor’s center where the rest of the squad was. Meteora was hard at work on a heavy blast door, trying to open it, her fingers flying over the computer panel. Therex slouched against a bookshelf, leaning on it heavily, causing one of the shelves to droop and bend. Terre milled about for a couple seconds, studying book titles, still glancing from the corner of her eye at Therex. Therex walked over to Skarr, hoping to speed things up.

“How we doin’?” Therex asked, nodding towards Meteora.

“Not too badly. We took care of the rest of the Class Ones and Threes that were out here…. How’s the upstairs?”

“Just one Class Three, and over towards that general direction, there were some Class Ones and a single Class Three that Terre took care of.” he said, shrugging.

"All right," Skarr said. "Hang tight, we should be through soon."

This post is the result of much deliberation with ShanneTwo. I didn't know if Skarr wanted us breaking down a door or not, just yet, so, if someone knows better, they can post.
"He has his orders, and when a Chiss accepts orders he carries them out, period."

And now Autolite brings you Therex Whitestone, in Vast Empire, a tale well calculated to keep you in suspense.

The two forms of Terre and Therex returned from the upper level, having taken care of the mutants there. The visitor’s center was now mercifully empty except for the squad and the bodies of dead mutants. Meteora was carefully toiling away at the door. The squad leader was not sure why the lockdown had not lifted the large door, but he could not concern himself with the why, only that it blocked his path. Terre walked away from Therex, walking over to the bookshelves, scanning for something interesting. Therex headed toward the other side of the center, leaning on a bookshelf.

Skarr raised an eyebrow in interest. Something had happened on that second level. The two of them kept shifting glances toward each other. Even with his helmet off, Therex was a little more subtle about it than Terre. The squad leader shrugged mentally, not wanting any distraction to what he had to do. He turned to ask Kaye for a progress report, but realized that would only irritate the young tech. Skarr sighed and kept his eyes scanning the exits. The super mutant was coming, Skarr could almost feel it’s slow, predator like advance.

The room was tense. Eclipse knew it was trapped unless the door opened. Skarr had relayed his position to Garryll and their current situation. The Captain had informed Norith that there was a shuttle waiting outside, ready to treat his injured before they got to the med bay in the Dominion. The heavy blast door had frustrated Skarr, it was the only thing denying Eclipse freedom as a near unbeatable mutant made its way to them. The squad leader heard shuffles to his right and was about to sound the alarm when he noticed Therex coming toward him.

“How we doin’?” the Chiss asked.

“Not too badly. We took care of most of the Class Ones and Threes that were out here...how’s the upstairs?” Skarr replied.

Therex shrugged, “Just one Class Three and over towards that general direction there were some Class Ones and a single Class Three that Terre took care of.”

The squad leader gave the Chiss medic a clap on the shoulder, “All right, hang tight. We should be through soon.” Therex gave him a nod and walked back over to his position by the bookshelves. The squad leader decided he’d have to find some way to commend Terre. She was still relatively green, with only the last mission and this current one under her belt. The woman was proving surprisingly apt at the soldiering thing. Skarr was proud of how she was handling herself.

Skarr strode over to Terre and inadvertently scared her. Everyone seemed jumpy, but Skarr realized it was not all for the same reason.

Terre let out a deep breath after seeing that it was Skarr bearing over her, “Sorry about that, boss. Thought you were Therex.” Normally Skarr would have asked why, but he tactfully avoided the matter.

Skarr took off his helmet, Terre needed to hear these words in an unfiltered voice. It would be more personal. “Terre, I wanted to let you know that you’re doing this squad proud. I don’t expect much of new people, but you have certainly exceeded expectations. You’ll make an excellent soldier.” The younger soldier nodded her head and said her thanks. The squad leader smiled and replaced his helmet.

The now expected mindless shriek tore through the facility once more. It was far closer this time. Skarr’s slate grey eyes returned to the exits to find mutants shuffling in. They were only Class Ones, but there were far too many of them. The 2nd Lieutenant ordered his squad back to the blast door. They formed a protective half circle around the blast door and Meteora. Still, the Class Ones shuffled in. It was more of them than the squad had seen yet. It even looked like a far larger number than they had killed. The squad leader knew with a sinking feeling that they did not have enough ammo to kill them all, even if they died with one bolt each. A sigh escaped Skarr, if this was how it had to be then so be it.

The Class Ones made no move to attack, they just continued to file into the room. With a start, Skarr realized they were forming ranks. The super mutant was directing the Class Ones. It was the only theory Skarr could come up with. The regular mindless ferocity of the Class Ones was gone for the moment. They moved with surprising discipline, moving into place. The squad tensed up as they realized what Skarr was. The squad leader ordered them to hold position, they could not run now even if they wanted. The blast door was still closed and the ranks of mutants now blocked off the other exits.

The Class Ones finally stopped coming into the room. Their sheer numbers scared Skarr. A hellish fight awaited their squad. One that might see their deaths, unless that blast door could be opened. Skarr checked his weapons over, making sure the clips were full. He smiled grimly as he noticed Eclipse doing the same. The SMG raised in Skarr’s hands, he would not use his pistols just yet.

With another shriek running through the facility, the Class Ones broke out into a full run. Skarr dropped to his knee and he fired into the incoming army of mutants. The squad around him did the same. Lances of green energy splashed into the Class Ones, dropping some of them. The storm of mutants kept coming, closing ground fast. Their mindless predatory nature back in full force. More mutants dropped dead to the ground before crashing into Eclipse squad.

The melee that ensued was one of the worse Skarr had ever been a part of. He pushed the first mutant that ran into him back, raking the creature’s head with blaster fire. The next mutant took the butt of Skarr’s SMG in its face, crushing the thing’s skull inward. More mutants came at the squad. Beta had been pushed to the ground by a mutant, only to be saved by Terre. The squad was working together to keep the mutants off of each other and more importantly Meteora. The tech would not be touched before the door opened.

Another mutant threw itself at Skarr. The squad leader interposed his arm between them and put another bolt into the monstrosity’s head. The ear piercing scream sounded in visitor’s center. The Class Ones stopped their attack, slinking backwards away from the squad. At the same time, the blast door opened. Kaye had finally got it open. The crowd of Class Ones parted, revealing the super mutant standing at the doorway to the visitor’s center.

“You will not escape,” the mutant’s voice was barely a whisper, but all the squad could hear it with perfect clarity. Skarr looked behind him to the landing pad, and began backing his squad out the blast door. The super mutant strode forward slowly at first, picking up speed. Skarr raised his blaster. Several bolts lanced out of the end, hitting the super mutant in the chest. The attack failed to phase the large mutant and it continued to speed up. Beta and Balac had reached the shuttle with Razor and Hammerhead. The waiting stormtroopers lifted the two injured men into the shuttle and medics immediately began treating their wounded. Meteora climbed in after them. Therex and Terre were halfway to the shuttle, firing shots at the super mutant as well.

The super mutant kept coming, it would reach the shuttle before it could take off. Beta boarded the shuttle, yelling at the pilot to start lifting off immediately. Terre reached the ship and Balac grabbed Therex from her, who was now badly limping. Skarr was almost to the shuttle, blaster still trying to stop the super mutant’s advance. Terre screamed for Skarr to get to the shuttle.

The squad leader cursed as his attempts failed again and again. He threw his SMG to the ground, the mutant had now reached the blast door coming for the shuttle. Skarr would not let the creature to get to Eclipse. They had a hope of escaping now, the effort would not fail. The 2nd Lieutenant lifted the portable rocket launcher off of his back. He had not expected to use it this way. He charged at the mutant, launcher raised. Skarr needed to distract it or harm it, but he needed to be closer and make sure the rocket connected.

The mutant noticed Skarr charging and began making its way for Skarr instead. As the creature got closer and bore down on the squad leader, he depressed the firing trigger. The rocket flew out...and slammed right into the super mutant’s abdomen, blowing it back. The explosion threw Skarr back and to the ground, extremely dazed. He was aware of hands grabbing him under the arms and dragging him back to the shuttle. The squad leader cursed as he saw the super mutant rise again, barely hurt by the explosion.

One final shriek emitted from the super mutant’s mouth as the ramp to the shuttle closed and it lifted into the air. Skarr was placed in the passenger bay. He would be treated after the two more critical patients. Terre took his helmet off for him. “You’re going to be okay, boss. It’s over.” With those final words, Skarr smiled and closed his eyes. The mission was over. He was going to enjoy the sounds of the orbital bombardment hitting the planet and the facility, forever killing the horrors inside the base.
