Sleep, it was a wonderful thing. Bright hadn't had a lot of it lately though she'd probably slept more in the last week than she had in the last month. Given her current circumstances of late, she wasn't going to complain. Brightstar's life had gone trough enough ragged, chopped and torn phases the last month, she simply didn't have enough gumption left to care anymore, she just rolled with the punches.

THUMP!
THUMP!
THUMP!

Bright sat up in bed with a start. She looked at the clock on her bedside table and gave a quiet groan. What was so important that she needed to be woken up at this ungodly hour. The loud knocks repeated themselves and encouraged her to hurry to the front door of her home.

“Who is it?” She asked through the intercom system provided for such occasions. Her voice was rough and groggy, something that she'd never have imagined her voice would ever sound.

“Phoenix Intelligence under platoon commander Norith Skarr.” The man on the other side of her door said. Clear, concise, and official sounding.

Bright grumbled, “Better be damn good.” She opened her door slowly. “Got a name Phoenix Intelligence? And do you mind telling me what was so gorram important that you had to come pounding on my door at o' two hundred?” Gorram? Damn Jae rubs off on me even when she's blazing pissed at me. Bright shook her head and watched the Intel distributor carefully.

“Name's Cliven. You wouldn't answer your comms, and this can't wait, Sergeant.” The man was just the type that Bright imagined pouring over every little bit of information looking for those priceless nuggets. Scrawny, bespectacled, and pale, though he was far cleaner than any of the other distributors she'd met.

“Did Skarr send you?” She asked taking the datapad that the man offered.

“No, Second Lieutenant Skarr is currently away on a mission, I...” Cliven's voice trailed off and he cleared his throat.

Bright looked up from the information on the datapad to look at him. He was looking anywhere except at her. It took her only a moment to realize why. She chuckled and shook her head, it was funny how rumors could make or break a reputation. Cliven's eyes snapped up to meet hers. It was obvious now that the man had not volunteered to be the one to wake her up a two in the morning. “You drew the short stick, and apparently Jester is the only squad available. I understand. I'll get right on this though, it's disturbing news.” Bright placed the datapad on the caf table in her front room.

“Good luck, Sergeant.” Cliven said and showed himself out.

As she watched him go, the red head shook her head. I'm going soft. I should have left him scared and ready to wet himself.

There was a time when you would have, but I imagine that the smell gets to be horrendous after awhile. Bright sighed and closed her eyes tightly. This hearing voices in her head thing was getting old. It was even worse when the voice reminded her of the disturbingly demented medic that RAIDERS had been graced with. Shaking her head again, Bright dropped the thought and got her things read and called her squad at the same time.

===============================================

“Is there a particular reason why you dragged us all out of bed at this unholy hour?” A voice growled from the back of the briefing room. Bright couldn't be sure, but she thought it was Lightray.

Bright nodded and waited for everyone to settle down. She knew that waking her people up so early wouldn't go over so well, but they really couldn't afford for everyone to show up when they were comfortable. She recalled her own annoyance at being awoken so early, and it gave her a kind of patience she hadn't realized she possessed. She couldn't really blame them for being angry, but she couldn't take the time just yet to soothe the short tempers.

As she waited for the irritated chatter to die down she took a silent role call. Lilith was easy to spot as the only other female of the squad, her hair looked somewhat disheveled but otherwise she was rather silent, waiting to receive her orders. Therex held an annoyed scowl on his blue features, but after voicing his displeasure he crossed his arms and remained silent. Lightray sat in the back, disheveled with visible bags under his eyes. Bright wondered what hours he'd been keeping the last week. Alan and Hammer grumbled back and forth at each other before finally settling down. To her right stood the newest member of Jester.

Corporal Coadster had arrived early, he still appeared to have just rolled out of bed, but for the most part he held a nervous energy about him. His foot tapped and his fingers drummed on his biceps of his crossed arms. He was the man she'd chosen as her new ASL. He came very highly recommended and she'd practically had to pry him from Joamer's grasp, but the young man had jumped at the opportunity. Bright liked him already.

“Are we done?” Bright asked satisfied that everyone was present. When the room fell silent again, Bright nodded and turned on the projector. The image of a man in his late thirties early forties appeared on the screen. He had thinning, black hair and green eyes, seemed to be of stocky build and even in the holo, held an air of intelligence about him.

“This, my lambs, is Calan Forlax, escaped high security inmate from the VE prison world of Halm. He is also a former high ranking VE intelligence operative, one of the best that the academy has produced. He is also our target. Some time around double o' hundred this morning he escaped from his high security prison cell and managed to get off world, likely by stowing away on a supply shuttle bound for the planet Arkanis in the Gorlan System.”

She switched  the image to that of a spinning orb. “Arkanis is a large war-torn planet in Vast Empire space. It is now covered in dust and its once great cities are now crumbling. Bandits roam the plains, pirates occupy the mountains, and mercenaries fill the cities. It is a dangerous planet that is not for the faint of heart. And that is right where we are going.”

“What was Forlax imprisoned for?” Lightray asked leaning forward, suddenly interested.

“Selling secrets to the enemy. Officials believe that he wants to complete his sale.” Bright answered. She looked over at Coadster and wondered what the younger man was thinking.

“So what is our mission?” Lilith asked, pushing right to the point.

Bright hid a smile and switched the image again. “Jester's job is two fold. Prevent Forlex from making contact with any of his buyers, and  then recapture him so that he can be extradited back to Halm. If capture is not an option, we are ordered to take him out by whatever means necessary.”

Bright switched the image again. A rough looking city appeared on the screen. “Stanaru is a city located in the southern hemisphere of Arkanis. Like any other city it has its highs and lows. It appears that the seedier citizens call the edge of the city their home. As Arkanis as a whole is not fond of the Vast Empire, we will be required to infiltrate the city under the cover of darkness.”

“Gear?” Therex asked.

“We are going in undercover as mercenaries in order to better blend in with the local residents. Personal armor and equipment. Heavy weapons must be approved by myself or by my new assistant, corporal Coadster, recently acquired from RAIDERS.” Bright looked around. “Alright guys, we leave in the hour, get your gear and don't over do it.”

I hope we catch this guy, we don't need another Blanchard conflict. Bright thought as she watched her squad filter out of the briefing room.

OOC:
Okay guys and gal. All of the pertinent info is actually located in the post. Go ahead and do an introductory post about your character gathering their things or what not and get them to the shuttle. Take your time with your posts, no less than 400 words period.

Personal armor and weapons load out. Any exotic or heavy weaponry must go through me or Coadster. Most of all have fun with this.

With a flick of a switch the shadowy room was illuminated, revealing a neat and mostly undisturbed bedroom complete with a small closet and smooth metal desk. Coadster stood at the edge of the bed and bent over, groping blindly under the frame until his fingers slipped into the handhold of a large box. There were three in all, and he pulled them out and set them on the bed. These were his belongings, and there was very little else he could call his own. What should I bring…?

Coad shook his head in an attempt to get the nervous buzz out of his head. The switch from RAIDERS to Jester had been quiet, and he looked forward to the higher position. But the faces in that briefing room, the ones he now had to consider comrades, were new to him. And he was to help lead them. He’d just got used to dealing with his old squad, all of their tendencies and quirks, and now he had another crew of personalities to learn. He hoped he didn’t leave a bad impression on the Jesters; this mission would be his first impression, and he certainly didn’t want to mess it up. Was he even ready for a leadership position?

He looked down and found his hands shaking. Oh, calm down Coad, he thought to himself, opening the first box and sifting through the clothes for his thin suit. Since Anteevy, he’d worn it under his armor in case something went wrong and he ended up in some god-awful desert or another freezing hell with a malfunctioning piece of equipment. He put that aside, and searched the next box for his blaster pistol. It sat at the bottom, wrapped in an old and stained shirt. The shiny red pistol was his father’s, given to him as his tenth Birthday present. He ran a thumb over the model number etched into the bottom of the barrel, and the thoughts of home made him smile. The shaking ended, and he put the gun on the bed beside the thin suit.

His final tally of items to bring were the thinsuit, the C-19, his Shadowsuit, the DC-15 blaster rifle he’d forgotten to give back after the last mission, his trusty combat knife and a couple of his favorite ration packs for the hell of it. He put them all in a large duffelbag, along with a few changes of civvie clothes, and slung it over his shoulder. He flicked the light off and walked through the doorway, the door shutting with a quiet snick of the tumbler.

-----------

He was the first to the shuttle, and he took the opportunity to double check his items one last time. He’d have to watch the way he acted on this mission. My first mission as a Jester… The RAIDERS ran through his head, and he wondered if he’d ever get the chance to work with any of them again. It was a big galaxy, and he just a speck of a speck in its landscape. He took a deep breath, the last one he was sure to have until they were done, and boarded the ship with a stone set lightly in his chest.

Therex slid his foot into his boot, and sighed. He had always hated mornings. Rubbing the two hours of sleep from his eyes, he stood, letting the cold durasteel floor contact his other foot which was still bare. The chill helped bring him around. Moving into his kitchen, Therex pulled a small piece of meat from off the counter and threw it across the room. A tan blur shot across the room and grabbed the meat before it could hit the floor. Smiling, Therex scratched his pet Katarn behind the ears while it ate.

"I have to leave you alone today," he said to the critter, not really expecting an answer.

Grabbing his other boot, Therex slid it on in one motion, and grabbed his coat off of the back of his door. As the door whooshed open, Therex couldn't help but sigh again. Shaking his head, he started towards the briefing room. When the door opened, he realized that he wasn't the first to arrive. Bright and Lilith both looked up when he walked in. Nodding at Bright, he took up a spot in the corner of the room and closed his eyes to slits.

Less than an ten minutes later, the rest of the squad had assembled. Therex heard multiple people grumbling about the time of day, and Therex, his eyes still shut, opened his mouth.

"Maybe if you weren't up partying all night, you would sleep better." he teased. After Bright was satisfied that they had calmed down enough, she started her briefing. After explaining the mission to them, Therex chimed in again.

"Gear?"

“We are going in undercover as mercenaries in order to better blend in with the local residents." Bright said, looking around the room. "Personal armor and equipment. Heavy weapons must be approved by myself or by my new assistant, Corporal Coadster, recently acquired from RAIDERS.”

Therex looked over at the new arrival. He had respected their old ASL Dunny, but circumstances had changed. Suddenly, Bright's comment sank in. Opening his eyes all the way, Therex smiled inwardly and outwardly.

Before he could ponder any further, Bright ended the briefing with, "Alright guys, we leave in the hour, get your gear and don't over do it.”

Promptly, Therex ran into the barracks and up to his locker. Years ago, he had stashed some stuff that wasn't exactly "military issue." After opening the locker he pulled out the large durasteel box and grinned.

Time to reminisce.

15 minutes later, Therex stepped out onto the hangar floor, clad in his 210 Personal armor with an over sized black trench coat over the top. The coat had been a gift from a friend years ago. Built into the lining were several pockets of microbes that had an uncanny ability to absorb energy, and disperse it. It was good for a couple shots, but it could only take so much. Therex slid his head to one side, and activated a switch that sealed the helmet. When the hissing stopped, Therex stepped over to the shuttle.

Let's go to work.

Lilith tapped her code in the security console beside the apartment door. A white light flashed on the control panel and the door opened before her. She entered without even throwing a glance at the surrounding, and rushed directly in the bedroom. Lilith detached her hair, pulled off her boots, and underwear to stand under the stream of water coming from the shower pommel. For nearly ten minutes, she stood under running water, hands against the wall looking downward. The time seemed surprisingly long, especially when trying to think of nothing. Her future was constantly coming back, but the answers were not obtainable at this time. She had never been part of people capable of working in the same office for years. She only knew one way of living now: the army. Not expecting anything just following orders. She did not want to be part of a pre-built schema. The routine was somewhat toxic to her.

Then she remembered the rough time she had during the first operation with the squad. The reality of war was influencing her progressively with time. In fact, she loved it. Her self-esteem was growing up, and she never had the chance to meet great people before, persons she could trust.

''Do they feel like they can put their trust in me?''
Lilith wondered.

With all that in mind, she stared at the void momentarily before turning to the large windows where buildings and towers loomed the horizon. Slowly, her body swung. The water flowing along her neck and back, making her eyes closed in an expression of deep lethargy. Her right hand fumbled blindly the wall and stops on a soap bottle, uncapped it, then shed some of its content in her left hand…

twenty minutes later, and five more to dry. She put on new underwear, a tank top, and curled up between two cushions on the couch.

The next channel was displaying pieces of vegetation, where an bald old man explained that flora had never been so varied on Corellia these day...
Lilith’s eye became heavier, the journalist voice declined with every heartbeat. Her head calmly began to slide on the side until it reaches the pillow.

The terminal in her room suddenly emitted a beep, Lilith waked up abruptly to the sound of the call.

‘’What can I not do for you at this time of the day?’’ Lilith said while rubbing her face.

‘’Sorry about the early call, but I need you in the meeting room as soon as possible.’’ Bright replied.

‘’No problem, I’ll be there in five.’’ Lilith said while getting dress. She pulled on a pair of legging, her casual shoes and a long sweatshirt then rushed to the meeting.

5 minutes later.

Everybody looked like they partied late yesterday, and now they all seemed to be on a hangover. Bright turned on the projector and began to describe the target.

The M.V.P was a guy named Corlan Forlex, supposed to be a former VE intelligence operative that escaped a high security VE prison. According to Bright, he is on a planet named Arkanis an ancient wonder now filled with pirates and mercenaries.

Suddenly, Lightray break out of his nap and asked Bright about VE’s motivation to detain Corlan.

Lilith soon became impatient to know the kind of mission they were undertaking.

“So what is our mission?” Lilith asked before Bright had the opportunity to explained anything.

Bright hid a smile and switched the image. “Jester's job is twofold. Prevent Forlex from making contact with any of his buyers, and then recapture him so that he can be extradited back to Halm. If capture is not an option, we are ordered to take him out by whatever means necessary.”

Lilith grabbed a datapad from her pocket, and began to write essential intel about the mission. Shortly after Therex asked about the operation gears, Bright decided to give the green light to acquire personal supplies.

‘’We Leave in an hour’’ She said.

Back in the apartment, Lilith opened up her weapons locker on the other side of the room. Several blaster pistols, a collection of throwing blades, and most importantly, her spears. Each one appeared as a sleek white metal baton, but with a push of button could quickly extend up to their full length of two meters, with a deadly leaf-shaped blade at the end. The spear was considered by many in the galaxy to be somewhat of a primitive weapon, but within the right hands it could become absolutely fatal. She finally took her black coat, a pair of knee boots and a tight dress. She attached the spear on her back then headed out to the hangar. Corporal Coadster and Therex were already in the shuttle waiting for the final countdown. She threw one last gaze behind her and boarded the shuttle.

HammerHead looked  longingly at an empty old leather sheath. It was ruff and falling apart, but he couldn't stop looking at it.
I can't believe I lost it. For nine years he had kept his father's knife, and he lost it. Tired and depressed, he put the sheath back in his closet. He looked at all his worldly possessions, most of them weapons, and thought about what he was going to take. I think I know what I'm going to take.

He pulled a pair of leather holsters that held two blaster pistols. Each one had  a small scope and a 4 inch blade that collapsed underneath the gun. HammerHead then pulled out a pair of vibroblades. The pair had leather bound hilts and a leather wrist strap. The width of the each blade was 2 inches and the blades ended in a short triangular point. Each blade was 1 and a half feet long and double edged. He took out a dual sheath, and slid the blades in. HammerHead then took out a long blaster rifle. He attached a long range scope and a strap. He then pulled out a small double barreled shot gun.  He attached another holster to his belt and slid the shot gun in. He then filled the belt with extra ammo, knowing that he would need it. Finally, he clipped two thermal detonators onto his belt. I never go anywhere without my explosives. Hammer Head cleaned and inspected all of his left over his weapons, then put them back in the closet.

HammerHead slipped on his boots and picked up his chest plate. It was black, bulky, and dented. He then slid on two wrist gauntlets. The one on the right had a com link and a signal jammer. The left one was just a medal gauntlet but it had a slight up rise on it, so he used it to bludgeon his foes. HammerHead then put on knee and elbow pads, a brown jacket, and a medallion. He then strapped on his weapons, grabbed his rifle and left his small apartment. He typed his security code into the terminal outside of his apartment. He turned his com link on:

"Bright, I'm, heading to the shuttle. See you in a few."

"Alright Hammer, I'll see you in a few."

He walked over to the shuttle and saw a few others inside. He wasn't the only tired one. Coadster was asleep when he arrived and Therex was starting to drift off as well. Lilith was on the opposite side of the shuttle. She looked annoyed, but she smiled and said "Hi Hammer" as nicely as she could. HammerHead sat down a seat away from Therex, and closed his eyes. Well, this out to be interesting.
Fear is just an excuse for someone who is to lazy to take action.
Bravery is a fools excuse for running at something without taking time to think or strategize.
Courage is being able to man up and face a problem, no matter how large or difficult it may be, and take it down.

" Oi, watch where you're walking at, yeah?! " Lightray raged out at a man that accidentally bumped into him. A smirk crawled across his face as the man instantly backed down from the surprisingly scary youngster. The Lance Corporal had made a name for himself during his tenure with the VE; mostly due to his complete lack of emotion on the battlefield. To top it off, well, frankly speaking he was kind of an asshole. Since coming back from their mission he'd done nothing in his spare time 'sides spend his days alone and clean his weapons. There were still many answers to his past that still plagued his mind with unneeded questions.

His subconscious attacked him during his sleep, repeating the memories of the terrible night that his entire world fell apart. The night that a young smuggler on his way to becoming known system-wide would go MIA. Presumed dead or missing to the men that wanted his head on a platter. Instead he made the Vast Empire his home for what would seem like an eternity. Lightray -- as he was now known -- couldn't complain much, though. The battlefield was the ultimate thrill for the trooper, his personal playground whenever he needed to relieve some stress.

--

" What to bring... "

He said to himself as he fiddled through his foot-looker. He attached his combat knife onto his vest, holstering his DC-15 Blaster pistol on his right side while attaching several frag grenades onto his belt. His S-FOX Machine Pistol was firmly holstered on his right leg. ' Slugthrowers. ' He thought, a smile creeping across his face. He loved the sound of bullets hitting his target's chest. There was something about them that presented the right amount of carnage and proficiency that drew the boy to them.

He slung his M82-G Assault Rifle over his shoulder before tightening the strap that let the weapon hang off his shoulders. The last thing he wanted was to drop the damn thing and misfire a slug into his leg. After filling up each of the pockets along his combat vest with various magazines, grenade-shells and small supplies, He walked to the turbolift with a joyful smile on his face.

There were several people already at the shuttle by the time he arrived. Lightray greeted them with a devious nod, accompanied by that same evil smile that seemed to make its way to his face as of recent. " Who's ready to kill some tangos, aye?! " Lightray attempted to break the ice. What better way to that than attempt to get the squad to speak up? He casually walked his way past the few people on the shuttle until he was seated by himself, the closest man to the front of the shuttle. He hoped the mission dossier was wrong and the man had several surprises in store for them. And by surprises he meant multiple enemy personnel. God he loved them; they made a boring mission unbelievably fun.

As she boarded the shuttle, Hammerhead and Lance Corporal Lightray shows up on the access ramp behind her. Only Bright and Alan were still missing, the shuttle was grounded until they arrived. Lilith was not really comfortable with space travels. She sits down on the opposite row, and began to patiently wait deep in her mind while staring at the surroundings.
Lilith looked around her. The shuttle seemed fairly spacious. Obviously, it was intended to contain more than five soldiers. Corporal Coadster was peacefully asleep near the entry, and Therex looked over his blasters once before his red eyes began to shut by themselves.

Hammerhead was the first one to arrive at the shuttle door.

''Hi Hammer.'' Lilith said while smiling.

Hammerhead barely nods then sits one seat away from Therex, and closed his eyes too.

''Is it because of stress, everybody seems so socially deprived.'' Lilith wondered while continuing her observations.

Three supplies bags fully filled were resting within the cargo nets. Apparently, they had been swung there before the squad’s arrival. Lance Corporal Lightray second Hammer and entered the shuttle with his big M82-G wrapped over his shoulder.

''Who's ready to kill some tangos, aye?!" He said with spirits.

The whole squad nodded to him. He nodded back then starts walking toward the front part of the shuttle and sits down. Lilith was actually happy to see that someone was that excited about the mission, make her felt more at ease. Therex suddenly leaned over and whispered.

''Don’t worry miss, everything’s going to be fine.''

''Thanks, I appreciate your concerns. I am going to be fine, I just hate the first twenty seconds that succeeds liftoff.'' Lilith replied.

''Ha! Are you crazy, it’s the best twenty seconds you can experience during the mission.'' Therex replied while turning his head toward Hammer.

''You haven’t respond to Lil’s greeting.''

But the young man did not care and was sleeping tight. Perhaps they would learn to know each other later on the field.
Arkanis... A name that sounded hollow to her. Lilith tried to remember all the planets she had learned in books or on the Holonet, but she was confident to never have encountered anything mentioned during the meeting. Keeping her question cornered in her head for later, Lilith started to felt sweat dripping on her back. She disconnects the belt from her seat, and removes her black coat. This being done, she waited for the chilly sensation to give her goose bumps.

''Corporal, do you know what it's like on Arkanis? Actually, I never really travel back in the past.'' Lilith asked to Coadster.

Her tone was meant to be calm, composed, almost friendly, but still tinged with the respect that is owed to a superior. Beyond this aspect, it was also kind of a test she projected over Coadster. Lilith wanted to know if his men were counting for him, recruits or not. Would he be helping them later if they were to be in need? Within all circumstances, the answer of the Corporal and the way he would respond was capital for Lil. One of the pilots stuck his head out of the cockpit, which surprised Lilith because of the silence invading the room. The absence of life besides the other soldiers has given her the impression of being alone in the shuttle. The pilot spoke with chronic fatigue and disdain, but his speech had the merit of being clear.

''I just received a message from your squad leader. She will arrive in 5 minutes.''

Once the instructions delivered, he regains its cockpit. Lilith stands up and grabbed one of the bags containing supplies. She opened it and examined its content. There was sleeping bags, spare cartridges for conventional blasters, tools to make fire, water bottles, multifunction knifes and several boxes of food. Certain packaged was Class A and E. Lilith grabbed out one of each, and handed one to Therex.

''I know we're not gone yet, but it's always better to prevent any kinds of situations that may arise. No?'' Lilith said while handing over a box of Bantha stew to Therex.

''Yeah, that is true. Thanks.'' He said while seizing the box ''Hey Coadster, Would you want some of these too.''

''Yes of course, Lilith didn’t inherit all of these as I can remember.'' Coadster replied while laughing.

Lil took one of the multifunction knives and uncapped her food’s ration. She took her time to enjoy it. Military foods, the only real delicacy. In fact, Lilith had known better, she’ll do with what she had at the moment. Then while she was waiting for Bright and Alan, Lil decided to tweak her new boots to mold them to her feet and avoid any blisters or unnecessary suffering.

Coad popped the tab at the bottom of his ration container, and held it lightly to keep from burning his hands as the stew began heating. The smell of bantha meat filled the air, and he remembered again why he’d squirreled this particular meal with his things during the transfer. It made him feel a little mischievous,  a guilty pleasure he’d probably feel whenever now enjoying his favorite MRI. Steam rose from the caps of the containers, and Therex simply twisted it off while Lilith popped it off with a practiced flick of her knife.

From what he could tell from this first true get-together with his squad was that it was just as diverse as the RAIDERS. Only, well, a little less crazy. Maybe. The glint in Jo’ron’s eye over the prospect of tango killing made Coad a little nervous, but he’d seen it before on a few faces and he was sure he’d see more of that look. He decided to keep a bit of a closer eye on that one; he’d rather not have authority issues with anyone, and he seemed to have a bit more attitude than the other folks in the shuttle.

Coming back to Lil’s question, he swallowed a mouthful of warm brown stew and replied, “I don‘t know much about the planet. In fact, I hadn’t heard of it before the debrief. Sounds like Tatooine though, if you ask me.”

…On second though, it might not be a good idea to ask me that. I’ve never been to Tatooine either.”

He took another swig of the stew, letting it warm his bones. Boots echoed loudly off of the shuttle’s ramp, and Alan emerged with a heavy bag in tow. He gave a wave and jammed his equipment into the storage locker just as Bright made her way into the shuttle as well. She took a quick head count then slipped into the cockpit to give the okay to launch.  As the entry ramp made its slow ascent, Bright set her own things into a storage unit and sat down in the seat opposite of Cody.

“Alright guys and gal, it’s time to take off. Let’s get out there and earn those credits.”

As the ramp snicked  shut, a disembodied voice filled the room. “Hello, this is Tony speaking. We’re preparing for lift-off now. Make sure to have everything worth finding later properly secured in the storage units, and  be sure to buckle yourselves in while we exit orbit. In case of emergency, your seat can be used as a flotation device…”

-----------------------------------------

During the trip, Coad got to learn a bit more about the Jesters. While most of the trip was covered by the squad’s need for sleep (helped by the merciful pilot dimming the bright fluorescent lights above), conversation revealed that this was a more social group than the RAIDERS, and the group had a higher capacity to communicate. It was certainly a contrast to the journeys with his old squad, who were for the most part silent en route, the troops caught up in their own personal problems and doing little more than running scenarios in their heads or polishing a weapon to keep busy. He remained aloof of the chatting, though, preferring to simply listen and learn about his new comrades. Or maybe it was simply habit.

Fifteen minutes prior to landing, the group was told to prepare for arrival. Those not in their equipment already grabbed their armor and dispersed, Cody heading down below into he cargo hold to change while the others were waiting for the private facilities above. He quickly stripped down and tugged on his thin suit, the stretchy material making it a pain to adjust, as it always had. The Shadowsuit had no real defensive qualities, so he took liberties with his SCOPE armor and brought along the chest plate, shoulder pads and boots to put on underneath.

By the time he slipped on his suit over all that, it was time for entry. He bounded up the steps, bag in hand, and threw himself into a seat. Lightray issued a derisive chuckle as Cody fiddled with his buckle.

“What took you so long? Zipper got stuck?”

Coad shot him a quick look, but refrained from saying anything. Don’t pick any fights now, especially not with your allies. The situation was forgotten quickly with the sudden shaking of the shuttle. The ports showed only red waves of hear as the ship slowed to terminal velocity. Metal rattled , and the fluorescent lighting were replaced by dim red orbs in the walls. Things got smoother as they approached the surface, and the view outside now showed a night as pitch as dark. The shuttle slowed, slowed, slowed down, its engines whining high as it pushed to slow it’s descent.

Then, a hard bump as the ship met the ground. “Alright boys and girls,” the pilot said calmly through the intercom. “Welcome to Arkanis. Watch your step and don’t leave anything behind. Oh, and Bright? Bring me back a souvenir, wouldja? Socks don‘t count.”

The ramp opened up, and the Jesters filed out one by one. Cody donned his helmet and slammed a clip into his DC-15. He slung that and his bag over his shoulder, changes of clothes packed neatly within. He was last off the shuttle after Bright, and just as his feet made first contact with Arkanis the ramp began to lift. He ran to clear the plume of dust being thrown by the repulsorlifts, taking a spot with the other Jesters to watch their ride take off into the dark night sky.

Not wasting any time, Bright motioned for the others to form a circle, and a data pad was held in the middle, a topographic map showing the lay of the land. It was a generally flat planet, lazy valleys and worn hills pitting the otherwise smooth surface. A red square represented the group in the center of the display, and several black dots were placed haphazardly on the grid.

“If you couldn’t guess, this is Arkanis,” Bright began, the display zooming closer to the red dot in the center. “To the West of us is Stanaru, that lovely town where we’ll start searching for Forlax. It’s a bit of a walk, so let’s get there before the sun does. “

The data pad was turned off and put back into her bag. “Once we get there, we can really get started. And remember:” Coad was sure a select few in the group got a glance, though Bright was sure to pass her gaze on all of the squad. “We’re doing this low profile, so try to keep one. Now Jesters, let‘s move.”

OOC:
We've touched down on Arkanis and are hoofing it to Stanaru. Let's get this show on the road, eh?

Therex hated walking. It was just never an activity he could enjoy. Running was a different matter. You got where you wanted to go, but it doesn't take hours, and you can still enjoy the scenery. Turning around, Therex spotted Lilith and Bright chatting about something. Lightray and Alan were eyeing the sides of the path they were taking. The dark was making everyone a little edgy. However, Coad was standing off to one side, all by himself, looking either straight ahead, or at his feet. Shaking his head, Therex remembered his first couple days in the VE Army. He was just as nervous as this veteran was to be placed in a new squad. He hid it well, but signs always escaped.

Returning his focus forward, Therex could see a small sliver of light on the horizon. As the sun slowly rose, it revealed more of the landscape than Therex was wanting to see. This place was barren, desolate. Definitely not the place to build a summer cottage. Many people would have classified Csilla as barren as well, but Therex always felt at peace there. Here, there was no peace, even in the dead silence. Sighing, Therex pushed back the homesickness and straightened up. Using one hand, he flattened one side of his over-sized trench coat, and with the other he enclosed the coat around him.

Bright said something behind him, barely an audible whisper, but Lilith laughed, snapping Therex back to reality. Obviously the girls weren't doing to bad getting along. Which was nice. Bright had been the only female for a while, and even though she had that whole, "hang with the guys" kind of look, she obviously enjoyed having a member of the same gender to chat with. Smiling under his helmet, Therex sighed and kept walking. So far things were running nice and smooth. But then again, that was when the bad stuff always happened.

In the distance, a large shape could be seen, most likely some sort of wall, signifying that they were close. Bright obviously spotted it too, cause she made a hand signal and everyone stopped talking, and almost visibly tensed up.

"We're getting close," she said, stating the blatantly obvious. "Like I said, keep a low profile."

Everyone nodded in agreement, and spread out a bit, looking like a small band of mercs just passing from town to town, looking for work. When they approached the main city gate, a burly man stopped him.

What a time to take point.

"What is your business here," the large, obviously unwashed man, asked, pressing his filthy body closer to Therex's. Resisting the urge to gag, he looked back at Bright, hoping that she could get him out of this, but she was too far back in the group to see him. Coad, thinking quickly, pulled out a cred chip and held it up.

"Just passing through," he stated, his voice steady and calm, "We aren't looking for trouble."

The large man stepped away from Therex and snatched the cred chip from Coad. He regarded it for a second and then nodded.

"Alright, enjoy your time."

Exhaling, Therex walked over to Coad.

"Thanks for the save," he said.

Coad just nodded, his expression hidden by his helmet. Therex stopped for a second, and the rest of the group passed him. When Bright walked by she turned.

"You all right," she asked, keeping her distance. She knew him well.

"Nah, I am fine. I just really am not taking point again."
"He has his orders, and when a Chiss accepts orders he carries them out, period."

A few less creds to pay the bills.

Stanaru was a dusty.,sprawling city, large decrepit buildings straddling the litter-laden street. At this time of day there was hardly a soul out and about, but those who were certainly didn’t seem in the mood to chat, the weary prostitutes ready for bed after a long night of work and the spice dealers sliding into the alleys as the group came upon them. Vehicles hovered far above the surface of the street, the wailing of their engines echoing eerily in the silence of the early morning.

The group headed for nowhere in particular, moving further into the city more by happenstance than  anything else.  “Keep an eye out behind us,” Bright told Lightray, looking forward again and lapsing again into the silence that encompassed the city. Light immediately fell to the back of the procession beside Coad and kept vigil with casual  glances over his own shoulder.

At one point Light nudged him and motioned to a lonesome figure in the street, tall and regaled in a gaudy robe and wide-brimmed fedora.

“Check out the early bird showing off his feathers,” Light said to Cody, giving a chuckle and heavy elbow to his side. The man had been watching the group for a while it seemed, and his skin jumped from forest green to an alarmed red for a moment as he realized eyes were on him, then he sauntered into the alley he’d come from, tucking a fanciful scepter into the crook of his elbow as he went.

“If the morning bird gets any closer than that, we might want to pluck its feathers,” Coad replied, letting a little bit of humor come into his voice. He hoped it covered the worry he felt over someone taking notice of the group. In such a large group they stood out regardless, and in their mismatched armor and careful demeanor they must certainly seem like they were on a mission, which might make quite a bit of the population of Stanaru nervous. And that would undoubtedly make trouble for the troopers.

Day broke over the far horizon and caught in the omnipresent dust hanging in the air, giving a nimbus around the long shadows cast by the advancing sunlight. It twinkled against the tops of the sagging spires, spider webs of broken glasteel blindingly bright against the rusty metal framework that had been exposed and neglected.

This is a dying city, Cody thought as they walked, remembering Aargau and its vibrant spacescrapers that gleamed against the blue background of the sky. Even Bastion, wounded and rife with tension, had a will to live, to prosper. But Stanaru had a sleepy death in mind, its keepers passive and forgetful of its needs. It made him sad, to see the great beast of a metropolis becoming a decrepit shadow of its former self. It made him… He nearly bumped into Lilith as the squad came to a halt.

“Now that it‘s light out,” Bright said to the now stationary squad. “we need to get to combing before the whole city’s awake. It’s a big city, I don’t need to tell you that, so we’ll split up into pairs and see what we can see. With that, until tonight we shouldn’t be seen together. New faces might be able to blend into a crowd, but a cluster of them is certain to attract attention.  Act natural, keep your eyes and ears open, and once it’s night we’ll meet back here.”

She motioned to the building they stopped in front of, a squat bar flanked by huge sagging towers of stucco and metal rising into the air. The Surly Zeltron wasn't the premier bar in-town with its cheap  plasteel front and smoke-stained windows, but it'd do for a rendevous point. “If we find anything here, then great. If not, we’ll catch a ride to Blackfyre and see if he’s there.”

Bright took a pause to look over her squad, weighing things in her head before continuing. “Therex and Lil, head West. Coad and Lightray, take East. Hammer and I will head North. The com is secure for now, but only call in for an emergency. Remember, we don’t want to spook Forlax. Arkanis was our last trail, and if he gets nervous he’ll pack his bags and set up another appointment at some time and place we won’t be able to find. Stay low, keep steady… And good luck, Jesters.”

With that, Bright turned and continued walking down Red Boulevard, leaving Hammer to take a few extra steps to catch up. Therex crossed the empty street with Lilith in tow, and Coad and Light exchanged a quiet glance before heading back the way they had come.

“Looks like we got our work cut out for us here, eh?” Light said, letting his rifle rest easy against its shoulder strap. “Hope you can hold your own in a fight. Don’t wanna have to pick you out of a scrap. Knock on wood, ‘course.”

Cody gave a light laugh and held back the heavy wave of emotion and mental replays that came with those words and threatened to breach his walls. Knocking on wood seemed to be the last thing Light wanted to do, and Coad wondered if he‘d be able to hold back that enthusiasm any. He let it slide, though. “I can handle myself, I promise. I’ve stayed whole this far, and in this platoon that’s saying something.”

He saw someone’s head poke out from an alley, and dart back whiplash speed. He looked at Lightray to confirm the sight, and tapped the bigger man’s shoulder to quicken his pace. The two jogged to the gaping alley, and they entered cautiously. Cody gripped his rifle in the early morning silence, and cursed the tall buildings that kept the passage as dark as night. But from what Cody could tell, it was already empty. Once again that nervous tingle ran up his spine at the thought of being followed. Gorrammit, I won’t have my first mission be my last here in the Jesters.

“Hey, I found something,” Lightray called out behind him. He crouched down to pick something up off of the ground, hidden from Coad’s view by a trash receptacle bolted to the wall. “I think it might be hunting season, eh?”

At the sight of the wide brimmed fedora brought up to rest on Light’s head, the answer  was clear enough to him, exciting him even as it confirmed his suspicions.

“Let’s go get our dinner, then. A plump and pretty peacock would hit the spot nice enough.”

The newly hatted Lance Corporal took lead and Coadster followed behind, his padded feet ridiculously silent next to the plastic jangle of Light’s own boots. And somewhere ahead in the dark and winding alleyway was a pair of extravagant and expensive soles running for their owner‘s life.

OOC:
Alrighty Jesters, time to get started for real. We've split up into pairs, and the whole city's open to picking from our favorite squad (that's us!). Bright and Hammer have headed North, Therex and Lilith are heading West, and Lightray and I are heading East. Have fun!

They shuffled past various traders, smugglers, and probably even a few tourists on their way, feeling the heat despite being under a covered roof of rock and metal. Guess that's what you get from that kind of planet, and it wasn't exactly a home you'd want to buy an ocean manor on. If there was any ocean but an ocean of sand that was. Lilith adjusted the bright scarf around her neck and start walking back toward East from where they were.

Out of the fire and into the sun fit the feeling she felt during the march. Heat rose from everywhere; the buildings, the sand, even off the people. She glanced up to the sky above a dark blue sky was visible, as far as she could see. Sweat beaded over her brow as she wiped it up from her eyes with her sleeve; she was dripping again in no time. She was glad that she had picked up new attire from the HQ before she left, well aware that the planet would be like this. Probably never could have dreamed that it would be this hot, but she had prepared accordingly.

A dark black undershirt was clear on her chest, wrapped in a black long coat that covered most of her body. Black leggings adorned her lower body, simple over the knee boots around her feet. A bright white and yellow scarf covered her neck and descended down her back, something she was proudly wearing as a member of the Jester squad. She had brought it in case some sandstorms decided to kick up. The same could be said of the goggles that were clinging to her hair. Black was most definitely not the choice color for this planet, but she loved it and it would help to be seen as a casual tourist within the area.

Making sure his blaster was holstered to her side, her blade on her back securely fastened, Lilith shuffled through the sand down the street, admiring the simple buildings and markets that littered the settlement. For the most part of the patrol Therex remained calm, quiet and alert.

It is actually true; Chiss rarely talk or show any kind of emotions. I only hope that it has nothing to do with me.

For those who chose to live on this planet, life would be undoubtedly hard. Yet they lived it nonetheless. No matter where she looked, she didn't see despair. She saw life. Therex suddenly stop walking then turned his head toward a bunch of doubtful merchant. Lilith nodded to him as they get close to them.

''Hey hi, nice trinkets you have their friend.'' Lilith said to one of the human merchant as Therex grabbed a jewel in his hand, turns it around a little, and tossed it back directly on the table.

''Are you searching for anything in particular?'' The merchant asked.

''Yeah, maybe you could help me. I am searching a friend of mine, maybe he passes by recently. The name is Forlex?'' One the merchants at the kiosk rapidly turn his head toward Lilith and Therex with astonishment, and then rapidly started to run in the opposite direction.

''I think we got a strong lead.'' Lilith said while looking at Therex.

''That is true, we should proceed with haste.'' He responded.

He was agile and he knew the place and the hiding spots, losing sight of him was not an option if we wanted to retrieve Forlex. After barely 5 minutes of running throughout peoples and booths, the suspicious merchant finally decided to enter a prominent building locate approximately within the center of the town. The interior of the building was filled with dark corners and several staircases.

''Wait. Noises are coming from the stairs leading to the basement.'' Therex murmured.

'Okay, I’ll watch your back. You are better than me with dark places.'' Therex smiled to her then started to scan the stairs as he began to go down. Lilith had right hand on Therex shoulder to indicate that his back was clear. Her left hand had her blaster aimed at the darkness filling behind them. Lights could be seen as they were walking down, but no sound could be heard.

I have a bad feeling…

Therex raised his hand to give the stop order as they were next to the basement of the building.

''On a count of ten.'' He said.

Ten…Nine...Eight

I am looking at the entrance with focus. No one can stop me now.

Seven…Six…Five

My right hand is holding my blaster tight. The other one is standing ready on top of my sword.

Four…Three…Two

Adrenaline is building up throughout my body. I am feeling my blood flowing through my veins.

One…

Therex and Lilith jumped out of cover and start to scan the surroundings. The Twilek was standing in the middle of the room, waiting on a stool while looking at them with a smirk on his face.

''Why are you smiling, you Bantha face?'' Lilith Shouted.

''Because I have some friends of mine coming in. You are not getting out of here today.'' He said while laughing.

''Da..'' In a blink of an eye, Therex was standing next to the man, and then dealt with his funny face with a melee blow which make the man loss consciousness.

Boot stomping sounds could be heard coming from the stairs. Lilith stood next to the Twilek, and began to search his body while Therex was guarding the entrance.

There must be something on him, anything that can get us out of there. Lilith wondered to herself while searching the confused man. Some of the thugs succeeded to reach the basement, but they were no match for Therex skills.

''Lilith, we must go now. There is more coming to our way.'' Therex calmly said.

''Ah! Gotcha. Okay cover me we must get him out of there for interrogation.'' Lilith said while putting her arm around the Twilek.

''By the emperor's black bones, he’s jammed there!'' Lilith said with exclamation.

The Twilek had a Datapad on him with the nearest exit marked on it. As they came up on the cross section, her head swivelled south to see more of those idiot little thugs moving swiftly in their direction out from the stairway. She had the sinking feeling that these guys had guns.

''Arrrr…To the left on this hall! Therex, buy me a little time!'' She said.

The bulk of the Twilek’s weight shifted onto her as Therex moved to lay out cover fire. Putting her weight into shifting the lumbering sentient in the correct direction, Lilith managed to get him to the stairwell and propped against the wall. Pulling up the appropriate frequency, she hurriedly keyed in the code as she called out to her companion.

''Therex! Takes cover! Demo charges one, two, ‘n’ four off''

Her voice was distorted through the scarf, but it would get the point across, her voice also echoed over the local comm. Darting up a few steps, she pressed herself against the side of the Twilek to keep him as stable as possible for the upcoming detonations. Glancing up once more to make sure Therex had heard, she nodded to him once as he slipped back into the cover of the stairway. Keying the detonations caused the building around them to rumble and crack, bringing the supporting walls of the basement down on their pursuers and blocking off part of the upper floor to give them more time to get to an exit. It seemed to be working rather well as she heard the shouts above them, and down the hall to the south, obviously the thugs were a bit upset at the redecorating  she was doing with the place.

Bits of rubble, dust, and sand fell onto her hair and layered her black coat with white powder as she looked down the stairway at Therex through the settling cloud of sand and dust.

''Therex! You are still alive after that!'' She asked.

''Don’t worry for me Lilith.''

There was no doubt in her mind that he was, but she felt like the question had to be asked. The uncomfortable heat and pain was building up in her shoulder, and pushed her out from her state of mind as more important things had to be fulfilled.

''You are still with us, Bantha face?'' Her response shake the Twilek entire body while behind her a hand calmly tapped her shoulder.

''Good. Therex, could you help me out with the Twilek. We need to ask him where Forlex is hiding, and there’s no way I can get him out alone.''

''Sure, no problem.'' He responded while putting one of the Twilek arms around his neck.

The door above them opened, flooding the dark stairwell with light. Without a thought, the blaster at her thigh was in her hands and sweeping up to aim.

HammerHead slowly scanned the street. The people of Arkanis were not unhappy people. To his suprise, the looked unaffected by the heat and even seemed to enjoy the weather. He didn't mind the heat. He had spent so many years on Felucia that the heat didn't realy bother him. He saw merchant's, shops, bars, and even some miniscuel apartments. For a barren waste land, it looked fairly normal.

Bright and HammerHead had been heading North toward the center of the city. They had been heading North for a long time when the finally found a place to look. The Rancor's fang was the most secretive bar in town and had a habbit of attracting some of the cities worst criminals. Bright turned towards the bar and grinned.

"Let's head in their, it looks like a very popular place."

"I don't know, this seems like a bad idea."

"Common Hammer, what could the harm be"?

The pair enterd the bar only to be greated by the smell of alchohal and vomit. It was a large round room, with no windows, and had small sections for groups all over the bar. The area in the center had two bar tenders and on every drunk looking guard. There were groups of mercenaries, spice dealers, and pimps scattered throughout the room, all of which were surrounded by guards. HammerHead then noticed that there were to very serious lookikng wookies garding a door in the back. Great, now are we supposed to know who is in league with Forlex. Who in this room isn't a criminal?

Hammer started to head for the center of the large circular room when Bright grabbed his arm. "Hey, where do you think you are going? This place is obviously not the safest around. Don't be a fool you don't have enough field expirence. If you even look at the wrong pearson, your going to get killed."

"Listen, I don't know if you know this but I was the top in my class at the academy. I also lived on my own on Courasant for three years, and I got in plenty of bar brawls, I still have the scars to prove it. If that doesn't satisfy you I lived on my own for four years Felucia after my entire family was robbed and murdered. I think I can get through one bar without getting killed!"

"I...I...I'm sorry Hammer, I had no idea."

"No, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to go off the handle like that."

It was then that he realized that he had attracted the attention of most of the people near bye. A group of mercs started to look a little edgy. HammerHead decided to take a risk and kept an enraged look on his face and stormed off towards the bar. When HammerHead looked back Bright, as tough as, she was looked hurt. While HammerHead thought over how to apologize a rodian walked up to him, his hand firmly on his blaster pistol.

"Your in my seat."

"To bad."

"Move."

"No."

"I said move!"

The rodian raised his foot and kicked the chair out from under HammerHead. Hammer imediatly rose and clocked the rodian with a right hook. The rodian passed out but his friends, who were quite abit bigger, didn't seem like they would be as easy to take down. Bright ran straight towards Hammer but was a little late, the brawl had started. Bright and Hammer fought back to back, downing one foe after another. The mercs were to many, and Bright knew it.

"Hammer, run get out of here, go get help"

"No, I'm not leaving you."

HammerHead than reached down and drew up his pistols. He fired into the mercs killing all of the group that was stilll standing. At the sound of blasters going off all of the armed guards in the building tensed up adn raised their weapons. HammerHead slid his blasters back in the holsters and said "We don't mean any harm."

"We were just leaving." Bright added.

As they left the bar a figure in the back got up and started to follow them. They didn't notice they were to edgy. As soon as the doors slid shut behind them Bright turned to Hammer and screamed: "Are you out of your damn mind!"

OOC:
Now me and Bright are being followed and we don''t even now it. Not to mention bright is really mad at me
Fear is just an excuse for someone who is to lazy to take action.
Bravery is a fools excuse for running at something without taking time to think or strategize.
Courage is being able to man up and face a problem, no matter how large or difficult it may be, and take it down.

Therex was pulling the Twi'lek with one arm, while reaching for his gun with the other. As he slid the revolver out, he pressed the hammer on the rear of the gun down. But before he could line up a clean shot, Lilith had almost completely cleared the room. Looking down the barrel, Therex would aim the revolver, only to watch his target fall before he could even pull the trigger. Lilith kept firing, giving Therex a chance to look around for an exit.

Spotting a window, Therex reached for Lilith. However, while making that motion, a lance of pain shot up his leg. It was so severe that his knee buckled underneath him. Dropping the Twi'lek, he reached down to his thigh. A large piece of rubble stuck out, obviously left there from when he was thrown by the explosion. Wrapping his coat around his hand, he pulled the rubble out, causing the wound to bleed.

Lilith's gunfire slowed as the number of people showing up dwindled to zero. She turned around and saw Therex on one knee wrapping his leg. She ran down and grabbed his shoulder.

"You all right?" she asked.

Without responding, he tightened the cloth and stood up. He nodded at Lilith and reached down for his gun. Lilith took over with the Twi'lek, grabbing him and throwing him over her shoulder. Limping slightly, they approached the window and crawled out into an alley. Looking around, Therex scanned the nearby buildings, looking for somewhere they could hide out.

Picking one, they made there way slowly over to the warehouse. Therex opened a side door and peeked inside. The inside was dark, lit only by the light that filtered through the large yellowed windows.

How cliche for an interrogation. he thought, moving slowly around the door frame.

Giving Lilith the all clear, she entered and deposited the limp figure by the door. Therex found a small table and cleared it. Then he jumped up on it and started peeling away layers of his leg armor.

Why is it always in the leg? Therex pondered, revealing his wound.

Fishing through his belt pouches, he pulled out a couple items and layed them on the table. Lilith dragged the Twi'lek near the same area and propped him up in a chair. Moving away she quickly thumbed on her comm and gave Bright a quick update. Therex was too busy to hear her. Grabbing a small bottle, he poured a small amount of a brown goop into the wound. Wincing, Therex punched the table, denting the surface, and causing Lilith to jump.

After the pain faded slightly, he reached into the wound and fished out a small piece of glass that was still stuck inside. Grunting, he wrenched it out and threw it aside. The brown goo had coated the walls of the wound, slowing the bleeding considerably. Grabbing a fresh bandage, he wrapped his leg and began replacing his armor. When he was all done, he swung his feet off the table and pushed himself off the edge. When he landed, there was a little pain, but not as bad as before.

Stepping over to the Twi'lek, Therex waited for Lilith. After she had finished reporting in, Therex slapped the sleeping person, bringing him around.

"Good morning," Therex said, his voice almost sounding sincerely comforting. "How was your nap?"
"He has his orders, and when a Chiss accepts orders he carries them out, period."

And now Autolite brings you Therex Whitestone, in Vast Empire, a tale well calculated to keep you in suspense.

The figure ahead of them did nothing more than humor Lightray as he jolted through the alley ahead of the two Jesters.

" You see that? " Lightray nudged his squadmate on the shoulder.

" Hm? See what? " Cody replied. Lightray smirked, a devious grin appearing on his face before a quiet cackle escaped his lips.

" The prey. It's frightened, therefore it runs to save its own life. " He raised the butt of his assault rifle to his shoulder, looking into the darkness with his scope.

" Typical behavior when one feels his life is in danger. " Coadster began. " Although I wouldn't put it past the man to be leading us into a trap. "

Lightray nodded in agreement. He'd been in plenty of situations in which a lone figure would lead him into an ambush. It was a common tactic in which many criminals used to their advantage.

" Aye... I was thinking the same thing. We can only assume that he has friends in high places. " Lightray began, motioning his rifle towards the buildings outside of the alley. " Of course you can't leave out the low-places either. "

Lightray took point as the two exited the alley. The city was dark, almost pitch-black if it wasn't for the moon shining what light it could upon the eerie street. Coadster scanned the buildings surrounding them with his rifle while Lightray watched the street in front of them. The street was littered with all types of junk that only added to the ambiance of the city. His ears would perk up from the familiar sound of boots clapping against the ground. Although it was very faint, it still managed to echo towards their location.

Lightray turned his head slightly to face his sqaudmate. " Aye, Coadst'. " He called out, turning his head forwards and motioning two fingers forwards. " When an animal that's separated from its pack ends up returning to familiar territory.. what does that leave the hunters to do? "

They paused in their tracks for a moment as Coadster turned towards Lightray and shot him an awkward look. " They either give up on the hunt or start from the very beginning; stealthily watch the pack of animals for another sign of weakness before they pounce upon their prey. Why do you ask? "

Lightray cackled once again, his rifle still pressed againt his shoulder. His eyes were focused into the darkness that confronted them.

" I say this simply because we're in a predicament that forces us to do neither of those options. " He fiddled with his rifle, raising the barrel towards his chest as he reached into one of his vest pocket's and pulled out a decent-sized shell. He opened up the loading chamber of the large barrel mounted underneath his rifle, sliding the shell in before closing up the chamber. The look on Cody's face had given away that he knew what Lightray was thinking about doing.

" In a situation like this. " Lightray began, pressing the butt of his rifle onto his shoulder before bringing his eye to the scope. His finger moved to the trigger located on the under barrel. " The hunter is forced to improvise when the entire pack becomes the object of desire; the entire pack becomes the prey once they come looking for a fight. "

He aimed his rifle towards the second building to his right; an apartment complex from what he could tell. With a multitude of windows it seemed to be the perfect place that an enemy could use to their advantage in a firefight. From Lightray's perspective it was the perfect place to wake up the dragon so to speak.

" A high-yield incendiary grenade-shell is the perfect way to bring light to the darkness whilst showing the pack of banthas that we're not to be taken lightly. Don't you agree? " Lightray turned his head towards Coadster, smiling before letting another cackle escape his lips. Before Coadster could say one word Lightray had whipped his head forwards, lining up his eye into the scope and pulling the trigger on his grenade launcher.

The weapon roared as the shell spat from the barrel, the recoil being absorbed by Lightray's shoulder. It quickly collided with the building, the explosion roaring into the distance as debris from the building came crashing onto the street in a blazing inferno. The interior of the building lit up as furniture and the area itself caught on fire. The screams of the men inside that were going to ambush the duo would be heard to much delight as they jumped out of the building, falling to the street in the confusion.

" Duck and Cover, we got hostiles ahead of us! " Coadster called out, moving to his right whilst firing his rifle. He pivoted behind an alley wall while Lightray slid behind a garbage container. He rose to a knee, leaning from behind the container before shooting controlled-bursts from his assault rifle towards the enemies ahead of them.

" Oi, Cody! How many do you think are out there, eh?! " He yelled towards his ASL, hoping the man would hear him over the continuous stream of blaster fire the man was letting loose. " I'm assuming you took care of the few that were in that building, and their small-arms fire isn't that heavy! Maybe five, ten at the most, yeah?! " He yelled back, pivoting from behind the wall and letting loose several more shots from his rifle.

" Good! " Lightray called out, pulling another shell from a pocket on his vest, loading it into the rifle-mounted grenade launcher. " Let's flush these amateurs out and get some answers, yeah?! " Coadster shot him a reassuring nod, lighting up one of the gunmen with pinpoint-accuracy.

THUNK!

And the banter goes too far, Coad thought as his eyes followed the smoke trail from Lightray’s grenade launcher to the broken window of the apartment complex. Fire blazed into existence within the building, furniture catching moments before silhouettes of people began dancing like ghoulish shadows in the inferno.

The only thing Coad had time to feel was disbelief. “Light… What did you-“

A blaster bolt flew past his face, and he followed the green streak left in his vision to the muzzle of a repeater held by the Falleen follower, skin bristling red with rage. And behind him were a dozen more figures, that number growing as people began pouring out of the hazy smoke that filled the lobby. The hair on the back of his neck as he thought about how many might be armed, and decided he was very exposed in the middle of the alley.

“Duck and cover!” Cody called out to Lightray, more out of habit than any concern for the man that just firebombed a building full of citizens. “We got hostiles ahead of us!”

As for himself, he ran for the corner of another building deeper in the alley, hoping the shorter barrels of the enemy would kill their accuracy. Light hunkered down behind a trash receptacle, bringing his rifle over the top of it like a machine gun. Then, the fight began in earnest. Red lights dazzled Coad’s eyes in the near darkness of the passage, and it was all he could do to fire back. His DC-15 added to the cacophony of sound that echoed in the barely waking district, his finger squeezing in half-second intervals like he was taught.

Light yelled something at him, nearly unintelligible over the noise, something about the enemy. He tried to take a tally, but the smoke bellowing from the front door made it hard to tell just how many there were. There weren’t many, though. Something about the mere handful of gunmen didn’t quite sit right in his mind. A bolt scorched the corner of the building Cody was hiding behind and he pulled back into cover. Whatever it was, it was lost. “Maybe five, ten at the most, yeah?!”

“Good! Let's flush these amateurs out and get some answers, yeah?!” He responded, not even flinching at a bolt scorching the thick plastic of his chestplate.

He nodded, vowing silently that if they got out of this he’d kill the trooper himself. Dammit, what didn’t he understand about laying low?! No amount of info was worth blowing their cover like this. It defeated the point of them being there at all. He imagined what he could do to keep this from becoming a big thing, and his imagination failed him; it turned to warming thoughts of court-martialing Lightray instead.

Heat suddenly erupted in the middle of Coad’s back, and he yelped in pain as the SCOPE armor below the shadowsilk melted and burned through his thinsuit. Confusion held his mind in thrall for a moment and he turned to see what had shot him. Seven smoky gunners glared at him as they bore down on the trooper. Suddenly that niggling thought of numbers resolved itself, and the epiphany hit him harder than the blaster bolt.

“Light, we need to get out of here! We’re being flanked!”

The big trooper didn’t hear him through the fire, and continued to laugh as another magazine of ammo slammed home. Cody rushed to him and thumped his back, only remembering the comlink as Light turned on him. He pressed the receiver in his ear while trying to get cover behind the receptacle.

“Light we need to go, now! We’re being surrounded! Now!”

He pulled the burly man by a pauldron and let him take lead in the run. The two sprinted, their backs against the blazing building and the incoming fire. There was something disconcerting about that in Cody’s mind, not being able to see that muzzle bearing down on him. The hole in his plate seemed an enormous target, and he imagined an unseen gunner taking aim at that scorched white plastic beneath impenetrable black cloth…

His legs came out underneath him before he registered the intense pain in the back of his head. The blow echoed in his head a quarter second later and he saw the ashy dust that held him a moment ago come up to meet his face. His goggles hit first and bit into his skin, but it was nothing compared to the dizzying purple pain that erupted in his head. The edges of his vision blurred, and his arms refused to hold him as he tried to get back to his feet. A boot rested against his ribs, and it turned him over. He looked up at a nasty looking Gran, his sneer marred by several missing teeth. The barrel of a repeater was pointed right in between Coad’s eyes, and he found it was hard to concentrate on the gun, forcing him to nearly cross his eyes even as they tried to flutter shut.

He couldn’t hold his head up to look at the Gran any more, and gravity tilted it to the side. On the far side of the alleyway Light continued sprinting, blasting a man in his way before barreling through him. Static filled in the rest of his vision, and the noise of the world around him faded into the high note of silence. The last thing he remembered before losing consciousness was hot breath on his face and a simple statement that echoed hollowly in his mind.

“You’ve got shome ecshplaining to do, merc.”

Screams echo off the walls of a large warehouse. Inside, a single light is turned on, illuminating a small area near the center. In a small chair, their sat a lone Twi'lek, his face bruised, one lekku dangling from a small line of skin. Behind him stands a two meter tall Chiss, his blue skin blending with the darkness behind him, his red eyes, the only contrast in the emptiness. In one hand he carried a makeshift torch. In the other, an M3 Revolver hangs loosely.

Therex smiled inwardly. For years he had been in the Twi'lek's position, tortured while in prison. But Therex had taken it a lot better. Chiss were trained to be resistant to pain, stubborn and resilient. Even so, the scars were a constant reminder of his troubled past. Then again, his troubles never went away, they just changed form.

Coming around front, he tightened his grip on the revolver, it's butt covered in blood. The trembling victim looked up and opened his one good eye. Shuddering, he opened his mouth, uttering small gibberish noises, followed by choking and coughing. Therex knelt down next to him.

"I don't want to hit you again," he said, holding up his fist for the Twi'lek to see. "It hurts me more than you know. Now would you mind helping me and my lovely colleague here?"

The Twi'lek looked up and nodded very slightly.

"Good," Therex said, re-holstering his revolver. "Now all we need from you is the location of your boss."

"There is a small building, just outside of town." The Twi'lek said, sounding defeated. "He frequents there, a sort of Safe house."

"You better not be lying Bantha Face," Lilith chimed in, "Cause that could be very bad for your health."

"My health hasn't been to great since I met you two," the Twi'lek said, chuckling.

"Don't worry," Therex said, slowly standing back up. "Now that you have cooperated, and helped us, I am willing to help you in return."

The Twi'lek raised his eyebrow at Therex, "How's that?"

"Well life here sucks, right?" Therex said, moving around the back of the chair. "How about I help with that?"

Realization dawned on the Twi'lek when he heard the distinctive click, of a hammer being slide back, and a trigger pulled. Seconds later, the body lay limp in the chair, a single hole through the skull. Lilith jumped back, surprised.

"What did you do that for?" she asked, running over to the body. "We could have used him."

"He was lying," Therex said, sitting down to clean his gun. "And besides, with his wounds, he may not have survived the night."

"Well then now what?" Lilith asked, satisfied that the Twi'lek was dead.

Therex stood, and re-holstered the revolver. Looking across the room at her, he smiled.

"How would you like to accompany me to a restaurant?" he asked, extending one arm.

"Excuse me?" she asked, a little caught off guard by the question.

"A few years before joining the Vast Empire, I was a chef. And one thing I learned while on the job, is that chef's love to talk about local dealings. They can be very open at times. It may be our only chance at finding a new lead."

Shrugging Lilith looked at herself and then at Therex.

"We may have to clean ourselves up a little first though."

Leaning back in the pilot's seat bored to hell was Beta, on a delivery route in his cargo shuttle. Tens of thousands of credits in goods were stored within the various boxes and crates stacked only a few feet behind the cockpit in the cramped ship. The large bearded man was half awake and bouncing a small orange ball against the ceiling. He threw the ball against the ceiling one last time and as it was coming back down he heard a ping come from behind him. Beta caught the ball with his right hand, his fingers enclosed around it and lifted his chin. Beta sat there a minute with a somewhat amused look on his face, contemplating whether it could be important or not before deciding that if it were a message to his work datapad it must be.

Once he gathered the strength and motivation to do so he removed his feet from the dashboard of the ship and spun his chair around to face the tower of crates now before him. Beta reached his hand forward and grabbed a large duffel bag from the floor and rest it on his lap before rummaging through the clothes and bottles before finding a small flat pouch. He removed the leather pouch from the bag and discarded the bag on the floor then proceeded to unzip the datapad's holder. He placed the flat device on top of the pouch on his lap and turned it on to reveal a new message.

Mr. Rythoren,

Our client has just informed me that the ordered shipment you are currently delivering was a miscommunication. It appears that the shipment was supposed to be delivered to Arkanis. The rest of the details are attached to the message.

Jarik Korr, Korrier Deliveries

Beta opened the attachment and poured over the details. His eyes opened wide before a small smile grew on the side of his mouth. He realized that he was going back to Vast Empire territory. He quickly spun his chair back around and got to the controls. He brought the shuttle out of hyperdrive before turning it nearly ninety degrees and reactivating hyperdrive. Beta once again leaned his chair back and closed his eyes.

He was awakened by the sound of the shuttle pulling out of hyperdrive and slowly pulled his seat back to an upright position. He looked out the front of the shuttle and saw the planet in front of him realizing that he was going to landing in Stanaru at night. As the shuttle slid behind the cover of the planet and into its atmosphere Beta had to flick the shuttle's internal lights on. Under the guidance of the planet's map that he had received on his datapad he maneuvered to landing pad at the top of a warehouse at the outskirts of the city. He brought the shuttle to a smooth landing at the centre of the building and stood up before walking to the back of the ship to grab the delivery order. As Beta was about to step off of the ship he heard that familiar ping from the back of the ship again.

He stopped, brought his foot back in and closed the door. Moving to the back of the ship he grabbed the datapad off of the top of one of the crates and turned it back on. He opened up the message that he had just received and read it.

Stanaru is a dangerous city. Make sure you are prepared.

The message was strange, no sending address and no signature. He shrugged and decided that a little protection couldn't hurt. He tossed the datapad back on the crate and went back to rummaging through his duffel bag. Within a few seconds he managed to pull out his personal light armor, his machete blade and a small blaster pistol. He put the armor on underneath his civilian clothing and strapped the blade and the pistol to his torso underneath a light jacket. He once again grabbed the delivery order and stepped out of the shuttle. As he started to walk towards the stairwell of the building a man opened the door and quickly ran towards him.

"Who are you? Why are you here?" The man demanded. He was a bit shorter than Beta and was wearing a security uniform.

"I'm from Korrier Deliveries. I have a delivery for a Mr..." Beta looked at the delivery order for a second, "a Mr. Fin."

"We've been expecting you. Come right this way." The man said with a subtle smile.

The man walked towards the stairwell and Beta followed. He led Beta down to a room that looked like an office overlooking the rest of the warehouse. The office had a desk with papers scattered all over it and a door beside it. It was a small room with one man dressed like a businessman at the desk and a security officer on either side of him. The man leading Beta walked to the front of the desk and gestured to have Beta talk to the man at the desk.

Beta shook the man's hand, "You must be Mr. Fin."

"Yes I am. You are here with the delivery right?" Fin asked and Beta replied with a nod, "Good good. Just lead us to the shipment and you can be on your way."

Beta looked out at the warehouse floor before he turned around. There were large crates and palettes scattered in a semi-professional order. Before he finished fully turning his head he saw a body on the warehouse floor stripped of its clothes. He decided it would be best to ignore it until he heard the distinguished click of a pistol. At that point he had the adrenaline rushing through him. He pulled the blade out from under his jacket and in a swift motion while turning around swung the blade at the man's wrist that was holding the weapon and cut it clean off. Before the gun was able to hit the cold floor Beta kicked the man in the chest causing him to fall onto the desk and knocking over the desk on top of the businessman.

One of the men dressed as a guard ran towards the door as the other one fumbled for his own blaster pistol. Beta lunged at the guard trying to arm himself and thrust the blade through his gut and brought it upwards, slicing enough organs and veins to kill him almost instantly. He then took out his pistol and focused his attention to the man under the desk, reaching for the pistol on the ground. Beta took his own weapon and shot him once in the head. He heard the guard trying to get the door open and looked over. As he did the man got the door open and started running outside. Beta saw this and took three shots at him, all to no avail. The door slammed behind him and Beta ran to it.

As he got outside he saw the man closing the door on the shuttle and starting to take off. He was ascending as Beta was running towards the ship. By the time Beta got there he was too far to reach and flying away already.

Filled with anger he went back inside and slammed the door. He heard wheezing and chuckling coming from the corner of the room. He walked towards it to see the guard lying on the ground with obviously broken ribs, holding his new heavily bleeding stub.

"Heh," the man said coughing, "we set you up, and it worked!" He was now laughing as hard as he could with a bloody smile.

Beta in his rage lifted him up and threw him through the warehouse window to have him fall thirty feet to his death. He sat on the sideways desk and put his head in his hands. After about a minute a radio on one the guard on the ground came to life.

"Take caution, we have reports that there is a Vast Empire military presence in the area. This is not confirmed yet but take caution."

Beta lifted his head and looked at the radio attached to the bloody uniform.

Vast Empire, eh? He thought, That'll be interesting...

Beta stood up and cleaned his blade off on the body of the businessman before putting it and his pistol away and walked through the door of the office, down the stairs to the warehouse floor and out into the streets of Stanaru.

Now about this Vast Empire "presence"

The Surly Zeltron was bustling and full of smoke by the time that the night swallowed Stanaru whole. Stools lined the long bar that ran the length of the common room, and shelves of booze and glasses covered the wall behind it almost up to the ceiling. The common room in question was rather open, with plenty of room to walk in between the large circular booths that afforded a bit of privacy to its occupants. It was in one of those that the Jesters met, far in the back and next to a raucous group apparently engaged in an almost violent variant of sabacc.

It was a rather worn group that showed for the debrief, the only exceptions to that being Therex and Lilith. Coad himself had several neat holes in his Shadowsuit and a painful knot on the back of his head. Bright perhaps was the most weary looking in the bunch to Coad‘s eyes though, rubbing her temples for a few long moments before addressing the squad.

“So,” Bright began, meeting eyes with everyone in the booth before continuing. “Word around town is that it’s been an interesting day, even more so than usual in Stanaru. A morning assault on an apartment complex with military grade weapons, a popular shopkeeper kidnapped in broad daylight, and eight mercenaries shot in a local tavern, all today.

“Quite a coincidence, don’t you think?”

With each statement her smoldering eyes seemed to bore deeper into her troopers, and when they locked on to Coad’s own, he had to look away. A dozen things he could have done to salvage the situation with the building came to mind, but no words would come out and Bright was far from finished.

“People are talking about it all over town, and it’s sure to get around to the other cities eventually. Calan is here on Arkanis for sure, and I can tell you that we’re not the only ones that have our ear to the floor. If he hears anything about someone tracking him, even if he’s all the way in Blackfyre, he’ll be off and we’ll have nothing to show for it.”

She sighed and looked down at the table, propping her head up with a hand that rubbed her forehead. “I told you that we were supposed to do this thing quietly. This is the only chance we’ve got to keep some important secrets out of enemy hands, and it’s already damned near blown. We need to step very lightly from now on. And again, no weapons that haven‘t been approved, or I swear you‘ll be begging for a court-martial. Is that understood?”

The hooting of the sabacc players was all that came back as a response. Cody still couldn’t look at his squad leader, and the silence was unbearable. After long moments, Bright mercifully continued.

“Anyway, did we find out anything about the meeting on those escapades of yours?”

“We had an interesting time, to say the least,” Coadster said, running a hand through his hair in frustration. “But we didn’t find anything out about Calan.”

“Okay. Therex, Lil, did you find anything out?”

Therex nodded and Lilith smiled and nodded with him. They looked at one another, and Therex leaned forward on the table before saying, “Well, it’s been a productive day. Not only did we find out that Calan Forlax is here in Stanaru, but we picked up a conversation about a meeting, ‘to teach those Empire scum a lesson,’ as they said, in a warehouse a little West of the restaurant we were scoping out at. They said the meeting’s been planned by none other than Forlax himself.”

Bright raised an eyebrow, to which Lil chimed, “When people eat, they talk. Restaurants are good places to get info.”

Bright nodded and contemplated, letting her fingertips press against a temple as she thought. After a moment, she nodded and looked up.

“We’ll have to check it out tomorrow then. Did you hear what time the meeting is? No? …Well, we’ll have to keep an eye out on it tomorrow. For now we should  split up and meet back here.”

Bright pulled her data pad out and brought up a map of the city, a building highlighted between two much larger ones. Cody pulled out his own datapad and took down the coordinates quickly as a few others in the squad had done. Bright put it away quickly as the waitress came to fill the mugs of the excitable guests beside them, and only spoke again once she was sure no one else was close enough to eavesdrop.

“It’s a safe house that the STC’s used before, and it’s still vacant. We’ll hammer out a solid plan there. We’ll leave in two groups, and make sure we don’t take the same route.”

That last part was directed at Coad, and he nodded solemnly. Bright gave a glance to Therex, Lil and Alan, and at once they got up and left the booth. He sighed and counted to thirty, taking a drink of the glass of water beading with moisture. “Well!“ he said as he put down the glass. “Time to blow this place?“

Light and Hammer nodded together and got up with Cody. The trio walked past the disused dance floor, and Coad murmured a goodbye to the waitress. The bartender shouted out a farewell to the party, told them to have a nice night. He smiled and waved back to the large man as they walked out into the chilly night air. Bright’s group was far down the street by the time the three troopers emerged out of the bar, and Cody was sure to double check for followers before slipping into an alley and off to the safe house,  mentally plotting a course that’d keep them off Bright’s trail and hopefully confuse anyone that might have a reason to follow the group. Cody really wasn’t in the mood for any chases tonight.

Beta stepped out of the warehouse to find the darkness of the city to be staring right back at him. He looked left and right down the seemingly empty streets, a never-ending tunnel of stone with the small lights on each side lighting their respective areas. He walked to a speeder close by and examined himself in one of the mirrors. Beta examined the each side of his face, left then right to find a few drops of blood on his cheekbone. He moved his gloved hand to his face to wipe off the imperfection. He held his hand in front of his face and stared intently at the small stain at a few different angles. Once he lost interest he refocused his attention to the mirror. Thoroughly watching himself and his surroundings he brushed back his hair and adjusted his jacket while he observed the movements in the store window behind him.

What Beta assumed to be the shopkeeper's silhouette was walking around behind the window in the darkness, most likely doing inventory or restocking the shelves of the store. He finished what he was doing and without noticing Beta walked into the lighted back room. It was about twenty seconds before he returned into the main of the store with a large box in his hands. This time he brightened the lights to a dim yet still visible setting. Beta continued to observe the shopkeeper's every movements through the speeder's rear view mirror. He was now revealed to be a short middle aged man with a mustache and a comb over, his almost black hair was just starting to gray. He kneeled down and started to place small medicine bottles from the box onto the shelves of the store, now revealed to be some time of pharmacy. Halfway through stocking the shelf he saw Beta through the corner of his eye. He was alarmed and immediately stood up and quickly walked to the front door of the store.

"What the hell are you doing?" the shopkeeper demanded from Beta, standing just outside the store and holding the door open.

"Just observing this fine vehicle," Beta said without turning around, running the tips of his fingers along the top edge of the speeder.

"Well get the frak out of here already!" The shopkeeper said, starting to get annoyed.

"Well, I'm afraid I cannot do that." Beta said now looking straight up and across the street from the store.

"What did you just say?"

"I said that I cannot do that sir."

"I'm going to ask you one last time to smarten up and get your frakking ass out of here."

Beta stood in place silently, not doing so much as sway to the side. The streets all of a sudden went to an eerie silence. As the two stood there a wind came from Beta's left and blew through his beard and across his face. He slowly raised his hand and lightly gripped the pistol underneath his jacket.

"Why you..." The shopkeeper muttered as he stormed towards the speeder. Beta watched his reflection carefully and as soon as the door to the store closed he pulled the gun out from under his jacket and pointed it almost point blank against the head of the opposing man. His reaction was almost instantaneous as he stopped in his tracks and raised his hands slightly. He started to slowly take a step back and Beta slightly shook the blaster pistol as to draw attention to it.

"You know what would happen if you tried to run, don't you?" Beta said. The man's eyes were filled with terror as he stood there knowing that his life could be taken from him with the simple pull of a trigger.

"You know what you are going to do for me today?" Beta said with a pause, "You're going to lie down on the ground with your hands on your head and place the key right beside you, cause if you don't you know that someone like me would have no regrets pulling the trigger and prying them from your cold, dead hands."

The man was almost shaking with fear at this point. He pulled the key out of his pocket and with his hand shaking violently, dropped it on the ground. He then went to lie on the ground as Beta kept the trigger focused on his head the entire time. Beta bent down and snatched up the keys before proceeding to enter the vehicle and start it up. He put the weapon away and pulled the speeder through the streets at a low altitude, scanning all the nooks and crannies of the streets for any signs of life.

After a few minutes speeding through the dark streets of the city he noticed a group of three pull into an alley too small for a speeder to fit in. He lowered the speeder to the ground making sure that he wouldn't lose sight of the men. Beta opened the door again and stepped out of the speeder to come to a rest with his shoulder against the stone wall of a bar. As he observed the trio he noticed one of them stop for a second to observe something and told the other two to continue around the corner. As the two other men moved out of sight Beta decided that this was going to be the best opportunity to find information of the supposed Vast Empire presence in the city.

Beta went into a full on sprint until he reached the alley's entrance. He peeked around the corner and saw the man stand and continue as to catch up with the other two men. Beta walked into the alley quietly, but at a brisk pace. He pulled out the pistol and pointed it at the back of the man.

"Stop right there!" Beta commanded of the man and the man stopped in place. As he turned around Beta saw his face and almost dropped the weapon. He recognized the face. It was the face of his former squad mate in RAIDERS, it was the face of Coadster.

At the words "Stop right there!", HammerHead pulled out both of his blasters and extended the blades on the bottom of the weapons. He was ready to drop the man with the gun when he heard Coadster shout out:

"Easy Hammer, he's one of us."

Hammerhead, ever cautious, slowly lowered his weapons and collapsed the blades. He kept his eyes trained on the man even while Coadster hugged him and started talking with him fondly. He looked over at Lightray and asked:

"Who the frack is he?"

"Well obviously, he is an imperial or you would have shot him already."

Coadster led the man over and introduced him. "This is my old friend from RAIDERS, Kurt Rythoren. He's got a speeder we can use so let's go. And Hammer, stop trying to shoot people, isn't eight mercs enough for one night?"

HammerHead climbed in the speeder next to Lightray and put his rifle on his lap. They moved forward with a jolt, and then the ride was fairly smooth. Coad and Beta shared stories and Lightray eventually even joined in, but Hammer was uneasy. He knew that just hopping in a speeder and going too a Restaurant was just to simple, something was going to happen.

They were getting close to their objective location when HammerHead's suspicions were confirmed. A figure in a black jumped in front of the speeder causing Beta to hit the brakes. The figure then pulled out a pair of pistols and opened fire on the unsuspecting men. Beta was hit in the shoulder before Coadster pulled him down and Lightray ducked behind Beta's seat. HammerHead followed Light's lead as blaster bolts pelted the speeder. The fire stopped and then Hammer heard a thunk as something dropped into the speeder. "Detonator!" Coadster screamed. The four occupants of the vehicle jumped out and took off back in the direction they came.

The blaster fire resumed as the speeder exploded in a glorious burst of flames. As the small group tried to escape the figure in black started to follow them going around the flaming speeder and slowly gaining ground on the undercover troopers. HammerHead took a chance and stopped abruptly, turned around and lifted his long rifle. He zeroed in on his target and pulled the trigger. The blaster fire stopped and the figure fell to the ground.

"Nice shot Hammer, let's go see who are attacker was."

"Thank you Coadster."

The group headed back to their former vehicle and hovered over the dying man. Coadster got low and uncovered the man's face. He was a Human, young but with numerous scares.

"Who are you working for?"

"My employers are many but my job is the same. I am to eliminate any potential threats to my higher ups. I have failed, and for this I shall die."

"Damn right your going to die, you shot me!" Beta said in anger.

The man died and left the group alone in the street. Lightray checked him for weapons and found nine thermal detonators, three knifes, and two vias of poison.

"Well so much for keeping a low profile." Coadster said. "Let's head for the restaurant and see if we can't get Beta here a bandage.

Bright had a massive headache. This mission had not gone the way it should have at all. In fact things had spiraled out of control almost from the moment they had arrived. She knew that it was only a matter of time before Forlax had confirmed identities on her and her men. She knew how things would go after that. She rolled her shoulders, giving off the appearance of a tired mercenary who had not found what she was looking for.

As she turned down another side street, she thought back to the moment she'd been informed of Forlax' escape. She'd not said anything to anybody at the time, nor had she given any indication that she'd actually met the man on several occasions. Forlax had been one of the few men in the Intel Division that she could and would always turn to for accurate intel. Of course that had been before his arrest and conviction. She'd not been a part of the arrest, but she had followed his case. She'd been stunned and felt betrayed. She supposed she should have known something like that incident would happen. After all, intelligence officer was just a fancy name for spy.

She sighed and rubbed the back of her neck. She knew the man well enough to know a few of his tricks. They had often swapped techniques for staying hidden from pursuers. She was, as the corps put it, very good at her job. He was exceptional at his. Forlax wasn't stupid or untrained. A sudden thought occurred to her at that moment, that made her stop in her tracks. Calan had once mentioned that he had never used a decoy tactic and wouldn't know to pull one off on a mission anyway.

“Shite!” She swore under her breath.

“Sarge?” Therex asked. He had either heard her or he just happened to catch the look on her face.

“I should know better than that.” Bright muttered as she picked up her pace. She needed to get to the safe house as soon as possible. They needed to modify there plan for a decoy or double. Despite the fact that she knew that Forlax himself would be the only one with the information for sale, she wouldn't put it passed him to use a tactic that she had taught him to get the job done.

“Boss?” Alan asked matching her pace.

“I'll discuss it when we are all at the safe house.” Bright replied shortly, annoyance evident in her voice and anger at herself burning in the pit of her stomach. How could I have forgotten that? This could end up being even more complicated than it already has been.

OOC:
Okay this is very very very short compared to all of my other posts yes, but deal with it. Okay we are moving this thing forward and fast.
The next post should have us ALL at the SAFEHOUSE and nowhere else.  As I suck at strategy and tactics someone else can come up a plan that includes the POSSIBLE use of a double by Forlax.
ABSOLUTELY NO EXPLOSIONS!!!! I am back now, and this story is going to get back on track.
A few of you just keep throwing people to shoot at in the story and while sometimes that is good, in this story it is not. No more shooting scenes until Coadster or I posts such a scene, period.
Lets get the ball rolling.

Therex was the last to approach the safe house. Bright had asked him to hang back, in case anyone was curious or had prying eyes. Pulling his coat around his collar, he stood against a wall of a building opposite the safe house. Most likely everyone else was already inside. Therex however hesitated. Something was different. Something about the streets around it, the way the building sat. For one, it almost appeared to move back and forth. Trying to focus his vision, Therex closed his remaining eye and used just the cybernetic. Still, the building swayed, but now even the street and sky joined it.

Opening his eye again, Therex almost fell over. He had been swaying back and forth. Catching himself with one hand, he braced against the wall, watching the gravel at his feet dance around to the beat pounding in his head. Sliding down the wall, the Chiss sighed and extended his legs in front of himself. The second his bandaged leg shifted, Therex almost passed out from the pain.

Damn! What did I miss?

Pulling the bandage back, Therex spotted small purple lines crawling up his leg. Swearing under his breath, he uses his fingernail to pull the skin away from the top layer, causing a very dark red fluid to spill from the wound. He didn't have drugs to fix this. Something in the debris that had created the wound was not reacting well to his insides. From the consistency, Therex guessed that the blood was absorbing oxygen at an unhealthy rate, which may explain the vision trouble. It was the most extreme bodily reaction to an infection he had ever seen.

Certainly one for the medical journals.

Sighing, he went over his options. He didn't like them. Frowning, he opted for the one that seemed, as his companions put it, "the lesser of two evils." Reaching under another section of his suit, he pulled out a section of undersuit and he cut it with his knife. Then wrapping it around his leg, he pulled it so tight, that the edges almost cut into his wound even more. But it would block outside oxygen from the wound. Problem was, that if he kept it on too long, about three hours, he could lose the leg.

Standing up, he tested it carefully. It still hurt like hell, especially now that the drugs he had used earlier were wearing off. Before he could collapse again, Coadster came around the corner, obviously looking for Therex, and grabbed him under the arm. Even though Therex was half a foot taller, Coadster held him up rather easily.

"Thanks," Therex mumbled, trying not to yell, as they slowly hobbled over to the safe house. With one last look, Therex checked for stalkers and endearing fans before they entered the building. Bright was the first to spot them, and she rolled her eyes, obviously contemplating early retirement. Therex couldn't blame her. Nothing had really gone according to plan today. Hopefully, now that they were all together, they could better stay on the same page. As Coadster deposited him in a chair, Bright looked over and then down at his leg. Shaking her head, she obviously had the same thought.

Again?

Smiling back, he struggled to shrug at her. Then he looked around the room and found that everyone else was pretty silent, waiting for Bright. Lilith was sitting just right of her, followed by HammerHead, the new guy Beta, and Lightray. Coadster opted to remain standing, positioning himself just behind Bright. Slowly, Bright raised her head. Therex prepared for the worst. Instead her response was calm and level.

"Alright," she said, almost sighing the words. "We are all here. Let's see if we can get it right this time."
"He has his orders, and when a Chiss accepts orders he carries them out, period."

And now Autolite brings you Therex Whitestone, in Vast Empire, a tale well calculated to keep you in suspense.

The group walked the rest of the way to the safe house in a dark mood. Coadster was glad that they got away relatively intact, but the fact that the incident happened at all made him extremely weary. Once they  caught Forlax and delivered into the Empire’s hands, he wouldn’t mind forgetting Arkanis entirely. And Beta looked better now than Coad  had ever seen him… minus the scorched shoulder, of course. In fact, it had Cody worried quite a bit; the skin was black as char, and exuded a smell quite akin to that of a steak. His face was flushed and sweating. The sooner they got to the safe house, the sooner Therex could patch Beta up.

When they finally got to the safe house, and after passing by once to make sure they weren’t being followed, Coad opened the door and pulled Beta inside. It was a small building, the front door leading to a cozy room dominated by a large table and several chairs. On the far side was an arch that led to the rest of the house. Bright  was seated at the table, poring over information. Upon the group entering, she looked up from her data pad for a moment, scanning the faces coming in through the door before going back down.

“Hey guys, took you…”

The sentence dropped off, a look of confusion taking over her features. Her head shot up suddenly and she looked right at Beta. “Who-- What?” She shot out of her chair, and took a step toward them, her eyes shifting from Beta to Coad. Beta gave a small smile, but Coad could see no recognition in his face. Coad eased Beta into a chair and faced Bright, a sheepish grin on his face. “I was just as surprised as you are,” he said, running a hand through his hair. “He took a long leave after the last mission, and he picked up a job as a trader in the meantime. Apparently he was tricked into coming here, and his ship was stolen.”

Bright seemed to calm a little, but her confusion was still evident. “Okay. But what happened to his shoulder?”

“He was shot on the way here. A man attacked us on our trip, but we took care of him before anyone else was hurt.”

Coad didn’t mention the fact that the assassin worked for someone important. But judging by the look in Bright’s eyes, he didn’t think he had to. She seemed to be thinking hard suddenly, and she nodded slowly.

“So, where’s Therex? Beta needs a bit of patching up, he got hit pretty hard.”

“He was outside, watching for anyone following.”

Cody nodded and left the safe house, Looking to the left and to the right for any convenient hiding spot the Chiss might’ve been hiding in. “Hey, Therex!” He called out cautiously, checking the alley beside the house for any blue-skinned men skulking about. But there was no sign of him around the house, and there was no answer from the trooper. Worrying, Coad began to look in the alleys a little further down the street, thinking maybe perhaps he staked out a spot to surprise any would-be attackers. Across the street, tucked away behind a trash receptacle, he found Therex, what looked like a tourniquet wrapped around his leg and soaked with, well…

. “Space Therex, you okay?”  he asked, looking at the wound for a moment to look at the wound. The only thing he could tell is that it wasn’t a blaster round, but beyond that he couldn’t tell. Therex didn’t seem to hear him either, and he pulled him up off of the ground to get him inside as quickly as possible. Therex mumbled something quietly, and Coad suddenly felt like this wasn’t going to be a quick fix job. To his credit though, Therex managed to keep from dragging the whole way across the street.

When Cody got him inside the rest of the team was already assembled around the table. He drug a chair into the corner and put the Chiss down into it, getting a better look at his leg. It wasn’t a pretty sight, and though the tourniquet stopped the bleeding, it didn’t do anything for the blood that had already flowed. This isn’t good, not good at all. Bright’s voice called him away from the Chiss, and he turned toward the table, noting that Beta had already bandaged himself up.

“Alright, We are all here. Let's see if we can get it right this time.”

The lights dimmed down and she set her data pad in the middle of the table, a ghostly building coming to life from the middle of it. It was a block of a warehouse, as tall as it was wide. There was no second floor, but a catwalk rimmed the inside of the building and was accessible by a single metal staircase. Beside that, there was no other feature but a pair of large double doors and a small fire exit opposite of the big doors.

“This is the warehouse that Therex and Lilith identified as the place for the meeting. The blueprints show how the building was built, but we have no idea if it’s empty as it’s shown here or full of goods. Chances are, though, it’s vacant. Forlax wouldn’t be comfortable in a crowded place, and he’s not the kind of man to take chances if he isn’t comfortable with the situation.

“The switch is likely to happen when most are asleep, so he’ll wait until after midnight. That means we’ll have to get there first. Just in case we show up after they do, we’ll split into two groups and cover both exits. The first group will enter from the fire access door and get up on the catwalk. The second group will wait outside and either wait for the group and attack from behind if we get there before, or flank the enemy and cover their escape if they’re already there.

“We’ll leave in an hour, you have that long to prepare before we get going. Any questions?”

Coad looked over the team assembled around the table, and looked at the holographic blueprints again. He looked back at Therex, listening intently and trying not to show the pain that was evident in his features. He knew he was going to have to tell the Chiss to stay, though it was a conversation he wasn’t looking forward to. The plan seemed as solid as it was going to get, and he hoped that it would only be a half dozen people they’d have to deal with at most. There was a strong possibility that Forlax already knew that they were there and might spring a trap on the Jesters, but that was something they’d have to deal with in time. But there was one question to ask that hadn’t been, and at this point it was the only thing at wasn’t clear. He raised a hand to get Bright’s attention.

“What about Beta?”

Beta leaned back in his chair when he heard this and the gears in his head started to grind. He raised an eyebrow and looked at the others at the table.

"That is a good point," Beta said, "what about me?"

Bright looked right back at Beta, "What are you getting at?"

"Well I would highly doubt that Forlax would know anything about me," Beta started, "with the what, ten minutes I've been with the squad. I'm sure being who he is he has to have scouts in the city. I'm sure if we found one of those I could impersonate him to get into the warehouse."

Beta stopped for a second with the room in silence. He raised his hand for a second and opened his mouth but didn't say anything. Instead he snatched the datapad from the other side of the table and turned and rotated the image until it was zoomed in on the corner of the warehouse. The image shown on the datapad showed a room that was relatively small compared to the rest of the massive building.

"See this room?" Beta said, "This room is the office building of the warehouse. It has a solid lockable door and is surrounded by foot thick walls with likely some type of escape that we don't know about. If he's as smart as we think he is he'll be in that room. All I need to do is get him out of there and the combined squad will do the rest."

"That actually might work." Came from Coad after a moment of silence.

"Well saying it is one thing and doing it is another," Beta said standing up and sliding the datapad back across the table. He stepped out of the building and looked around. Seeing no one he walked outside and glanced at the tops of the buildings, then back at the squad who was just getting out themselves.

"No one in sight." He said to the squad in general.

Coadster was the first out of the safe house from the squad. He too walked out to the street and looked around.

"So?" Beta said.

"No one." Coad replied, "Let's move on. We're going to keep safe and move in the cover of the alleys. I don't want to risk moving exposed."

The squad moved along at a brisk pace, never spending more than a few seconds out of the darkness of the shadows. Bright, who was in the lead gestured the squad to stop moving.

"What is it?" Beta said immediately and quietly.

"The warehouse," Bright said with an index finger pointing forwards.

"Guess I'll have to improvise from here," Beta said walking forwards, but stopped before leaving cover. "I need a comm."

Coadster managed to produce a small device, "It can send signals two ways between itself and a twin I have. If you need it for what I think you need it for it would be plenty enough."

Beta took it and examined it before placing it in his chest pocket. "When I send a signal," Beta said, "it'll be safe to open fire."

Beta took his weapons and rested them on the ground and before anything else could happen he set off towards the warehouse. He carefully examined his surroundings to make sure they were empty and entered the warehouse. As soon as the door creaked open he heard the click of the safety going off on a blaster rifle. Beta raised his hands and stood on the spot as the door closed behind him.

"State your purpose." The evidently new republic guard demanded of him from a few feet to Beta's left with the gun pointed to the chest.

Without making any movements he said, "I must speak to Forlax, it is of the most urgent matters."

"Just tell me, I'll make sure the message is forwarded to him; he's busy right now."

"Trust me, he needs to hear it from me."

The trooper rolled his eyes, "I'll have to search you first then escort you to him. If you make any sudden movements at all I'll stick this gun so far up your ass you'll be shitting bolts for weeks."

Beta nodded and the guard started patting Beta down. Once he was satisfied that Beta had nothing to hide he gestured for Beta to walk to the other side. Beta looked around the warehouse as they were moving through it and saw a couple large crates close to the large doors as well as a few smaller ones scattered all over the place. The crates all looked empty and looted as the whole build looked as if it had been abandoned for years. There were only a couple troopers patrolling the warehouse, casting strange looks at Beta as he walked by. He looked up and around at the catwalk on the perimeter, just like the plans. As he slowed down he felt the gun press hard against his back. He accepted this as a good reason to hurry up. He saw the staircase to the catwalk as he felt a hand on his shoulder and stopped walking.

"Wait here," the guard said as he unlocked the door to the office room and opened it. "There's a man here who needs to speak with you, says it's urgent." The trooper said into the room before waving Beta to go in. As he stepped in the half-dozen men stopped and looked at him.

"So?" One of the officers in the room said.

"I have news," Beta said, "The Vast Empire has dispatched a squad to come shut us down. They are to arrive in just over half an hour."

"And who exactly are you?" One of the men said. He was confident in the way he said it and talked as if he was a leader in the group. But he was also the only one there without a uniform. It must have been Forlax.

Beta stood there and thought about the question, he was panicking but was trying to keep as calm as possible. "One of your scouts sent me," he quickly said, "they said that the commlink might be intercepted too easily by the enemy."

Forlax stood there for a second and Beta was dying under the anxiety of what he was going to say. After a quiet moment of contemplation he said, "Where exactly was this scout?"

Beta felt like he was on the urge of sweating, he was thinking to himself he should have planned it out better. But now he had to come up with something, anything convincing that might work. "He approached me at intersection just a few minutes north of here. Told me they were stopped for something. Ran all the way down."

Forlax looked back at Beta. Beta could tell he didn't fully believe him but knew he didn't have any other leads at the moment. Besides, the it would be easier to accept it as truth and get out now for him than have to go through a firefight later. Beta could see he had no other choice in these circumstances. "Men," Forlax started to say looking at the New Republic officers but stopped for a moment's pause, "We have to move out. Right now we'd be better safe than sorry." He stopped there and looked at Beta, "I'd like to thank you for time and help."

Beta, unable to tell if he was being sardonic or genuine decided to take it as a success none-the-less. As he saw people shuffle around he moved out of the doorway. The officers cleared the room first and as Forlax was leaving Beta moved his hand to his chest and press the lone button on the device he had received from Coadster. After only a couple seconds he saw the doors burst open in his peripherals. As he saw this happen he tackled Forlax to the ground and amongst all the chaos that just ensued none of the officers seemed to notice.

Once on the ground Beta pinned the man's arms and legs to the ground. He struggled back with no avail under the weight of the large man. But still he tried his hardest and it didn't pay off until Beta was struck by a stray blaster bolt. With the jolt of pain Beta lifted one of his arms to clutch the spot on his side that was just hit. Forlax used this to his advantage and managed to push Beta off of him. As he was still in pain from the hit he was on his hands and knees on the cold floor. As Beta looked up to see his target for one last burst he had only enough time to see the butt of a pistol fast approaching. It struck him in hard in the temple, sending him sprawling onto the floor, unconscious.

Well this didn't turn out the way I'd hoped.

HammerHead was chained up in a cold and pitch black room. He could barely see, but was still able to make out the large inch thick metal bars that made the door. "And to think that only an hour ago I was waiting for a signal outside of a warehouse."

After Beta gave the signal, things seemed to go as planned. The squad burst in out of nowhere and thinned out the New Republic troops inside. Since they were taken off guard, they were unable to mount a proper defense. Then things turned for the worst. A stray blaster bolt hit Beta, so Forlax ran for it. Therex passed out so Coadster dragged him off to a safe spot while HammerHead ran over to Beta. When he arrived, Beta was clearly unconscious. HammerHead was then jumped by an enemy, nocking away his guns. As HammerHead decked the man he saw Bright tackle, restrain, and haul away Forlax.

Distracted, HammerHead didn't even notice the man who snuck up behind him. He felt a jarring pain in the back of his head and then collapsed. The New republic soldier under estimated the man he struck. He attcked a Mandolorian. HammerHead wiped around and punched him in the jaw, sending him flying. He then charged after the soldier and tackled straight into a metal support beam. HammerHead heard the bones in the man's body crack and he couldn't help but grin in satisfaction.

Once again, HammerHead's inability to pay attention got the best of him. A large group of men attacked him,  but with little avail. He pulled out his short swords and started hacking away at the enemy. After much effort, the soldiers were able to restrain him. The last thing He saw before the covered his head was the squad retreating from the turret that the New Republic soldiers had managed to set up in the chaos.

After the battle, HammerHead was thrown in a small dark containment cell with the still unconscious Beta. He cursed himself for letting himself go. How could I let myself go back into my primitive urges? I'm a member of society. I can't go off on berserk escapades every time I get a little angry.  I must have control of myself, what would my squad think? What would Bright think? What...what...what would my father think? Shortly after he went deep into thought he heard a rustling noise. HammerHead looked over at Beta, he was starting to move. He then woke up and threw up all over the wall. He looked like he had been punched by a rancor, which he probably would have preferred.

"Look who finally got off his sorry ass."

"Shut up, I don't even think I can stand up."

HammerHead's attention was diverted when he heard the whoosh of the door. A New Republic officer walked in, giving a disgusted look at HammerHead. "Madolorian scum." he said under his breath. Rage filled HammerHead's heart, he didn't like being a Mando, but he'd be dammed if he would be judged for it.

"How did you know," he screamed, "Answer me!"

"I have seen your kind in battle before, nothing nut a primitive, unintelligent, and blood thirsty Mandolorian could do such things to men. It's a miracle you didn't start to eat them."

"You evil bastard, I'm going to kill you!"

"HammerHead, shut the frack up." Beta screamed. "What are you doing here you arrogant scoundrel.

"I am going to make an offer to your friends. They give me Forlax they get you two, although I don't know why they would want you. If you co-operate, you will be executed painlessly."

"What?"

"Once your allies give us Forlax we will kill them. Does that answer your question? Of course we wouldn't actually trade you, I want you all dead. And my dream shall be realized by the sundown of tomorrow.

OOC:
Alright I have got the story rolling, so someone post soon. I don't want to be in this containment cell for ever.
Fear is just an excuse for someone who is to lazy to take action.
Bravery is a fools excuse for running at something without taking time to think or strategize.
Courage is being able to man up and face a problem, no matter how large or difficult it may be, and take it down.

Dead. I must be dead. Definitely feels like I am dead. Except for that annoying noise in the distance. What is that?

Opening his eyes, Therex saw nothing but darkness. He was no longer in his armor, instead he now adorned a simple Chiss tunic and cloak. Feeling it, Therex remembered the last time he had worn one. It was customary in certain trials on Csilla, for the accused to wear it. Purely aesthetic, but the Chiss were somewhat nostalgic. Standing up, Therex noticed that his leg was no longer wrapped and offered no resistance. Suddenly he heard the sound again, this time almost booming in his ears. Cringing, he threw his hands up to cover his ears. Looking out into the darkness again, he tried to turn on his cybernetic's multiple filters. When nothing happened, Therex panicked. Reaching up, he touched his eye, feeling flesh, not mechanics, under his finger.

You must be confused.

The voice was distant, yet he heard it as if the speaker was in his head, or standing next to him. Turning, he saw another Chiss, dressed the same as him but about a foot shorter. Looking closer, Therex noticed small things in the face that seemed familiar. The Chiss before him, was him, but younger. Taking a step back, Therex stood with his mouth open.

"I can understand your confusion," the doppelganger said. "Let me try to explain."

As the other Chiss stepped forward, the sound boomed again, pulling Therex out of his haze. Flailing, Therex yelled and jerked his body forward. Coadster was next to him in a second.

"Hey," he yelled, holding Therex against the wall. "HEY! Don't move. You got a nasty wound there. You passed out. Everything went to hell and I had to pull you out."

Still in panic mode, Therex started looking around. He spotted Bright standing over a man who was tied at the hands and feet. Her attention was divided between the man and a window she was next too. Looking down, Therex saw his leg. They had removed all the armor, and the infection had spread all the way across the leg. Gritting his teeth, Therex pulled himself up. When Coadster tried to push him back down, Therex grabbed him on the collar. Pulling him close, Therex ground his teeth together.

"Cut the damn thing off!" he growled through his teeth. "Trust me! It needs to go!"

Coadster was surprised by Therex's reaction and stared at him stunned.

"Did you not hear me?" Therex said, tightening his grip. "I make the medical decisions here. You either leave me here or CUT. IT. OFF."

Looking down at the leg, eventually Coadster nodded solemnly. Releasing him, Therex levered himself against a wall. Reaching into his belt, Therex pulled out one of his knives. Grunting, he leaned forward and traced two line on his leg with the point of the knife.

"Cut here, and here," he said, offering Coadster the knife. Leaning back, Therex tried to calm his mind.  He had seen other people amputated in the field, and it is never a pretty sight. Coadster nodded his head at Therex, and when Therex nodded back, he took a deep breath. When the knife sliced through the infected flech, Therex fought the urge to yell, knowing that worse was to come. Suddenly, the knife slipped through the upper layers and hit the bone.

The pain shooting up his leg, caused Therex to pass out again. This time, when the darkness came, the other Chiss was already waiting for him. Extending a hand, it waited.

"Where are you going to take me." Therex asked.

"You have spent years trying to control me and find answers. I am here to provide the solution to both."

Tenatively, Therex reached out and took his younger selves hand. The moment their hands met, Therex snapped his eyes open again. This time, he awoke to Bright with her hand over his mouth. Coadster was moving something wrapped in a blanket. Bright released Therex, and stood up.

"Do you want to tell everyone where we are?" she asked.

Ignoring her, Therex looked down. All that remained of his right leg was a stump just above the knee. It was wrapped in several layers of bandages.

"Coadster got the leg off eventually." Bright said, following his line of sight. "You know, you are our only medic, and so far, you are the only person who gets hurt. We need to work on that."

Still ignoring her, Therex put his hand up to his temple. Something was different. The small growling creature that lingered at the back of his mind was no longer caged, but at the same time, Therex wasn't worried. Shaking his head, he figured he would worry about that later. Looking up at Bright, he finally acknowledged her.

"You know," he said, a smile forming on his lips. "If I had been a chaplain, we could just kill the people who got hurt. Trust me, this is better."
"He has his orders, and when a Chiss accepts orders he carries them out, period."

And now Autolite brings you Therex Whitestone, in Vast Empire, a tale well calculated to keep you in suspense.
