Slicer

It had been a few years since she'd joined the STC, and finally it was time for Jaenna 'StarFruit' Caldwin to prove her worth when it came to using a datapad. Since she was a child of only ten years old, she had been a self-proclaimed Slicer; at age thirteen she taken the mantle as head of the Star Struck gang, one of the best and well known Slicing gangs on Coruscant. It had always annoyed her that, even though she would constantly prove her skills in missions with RAIDERS, she was never just handed the Army Slicing certification. Then again, who was she to challenge the rules of the Army? Especially when Havock was now the XO. Despite this, it was still hard for Jae to not be annoyed, angered even, by the fact that once again she had to through training that she already knew, already understood like the very back of her cybernetic hand.

"Cladwin, you gonna do this or not?"

The rough voice, grating and painful to her unsuspecting ears, ripped her from her mind and tossed her back to what she was doing. She had to take a moment, a long moment it seemed, to look around and once more take note of what exactly she was doing and where she was. Apparently she had been so lost in her own mind that she had forgotten that she hands-on exam to get her blasted official certification was beginning. Luckily for Jae, it wasn't a time test, or even a test at all... According to Jae's experience of more than ten years. If anything, this was a game, something that she could do during her downtime to ensure that she gets jobs that she wants and proves to the rest of the AHC that she handle such jobs with ease.

"Sorry, sir. Ya can't rush genius, yanno." A chuckle laced the cocky comment, a smirk flickering to life on the lips that had, not moments before, been drawn tight in thought.

The officer scoffed, his agitation growing obvious by the tapping of his right foot against the steel floor of the simulated frigate. "You can'y rush a hefty demotion for being too cocky, either." The thread was true, though still playful as this particular officer was one of the men who had watched Jae grow through her three years in the Corps. He was confident that she would pass, but that didn't stop him from keeping his toes from crossing the line of professionalism. "Get to work, Caldwin. I don't want to have to mark you down. You deserve this, so don't mess it up. You know I won't be easy on you."

"Yeah, yeah, I'm working on it." The woman rolled her shoulders back, tilting her head from side to side, releasing cracks into the air as she did so, a smirk drifting across her lips as she prepared to go to work - if she could even call it that. Slicing was her passion, her life, her hobby... It was everything she knew and if she could finally be called an official Slicer of the Empire, then by the creators themselves, she would work her hardest to pass the trivial test.

Before she gave the officer enough time to talk again, she fished her datapad from her pocket and smirked as she sat it down onto a nice smooth area on the terminal she sat in front of. Another moment of fishing in her pocket and she pulled out was appeared to be a multi-tool and set to work unhinging an area of paneling. She pulled off the durasteel panel to reveal a web of colorful wires and nodes. With a skillful hand she unhooked three of the wires and used her multi-tool to strip the end of the protective rubber layer from the tips. Once more, she fished about in her pocket, this time pulling out three caps that she then hooked the now fully exposed bits of wire into, and plugged the three wires with their brand-new self-connected USB heads into her datapad.

There was a soft beep, signifying that a connection had been made, but there was still more Jae had to do in order to get into the full system. With that smirk still on her face, she watched as a box popped up on the terminal screen, five underscores filled the space. Okay... gotta run the keylogger. Jae went to work, typing on the terminal keyboard and brought up an identical box on her datapad. Annnnnnnd go. It didn't take long for both screens to start sifting through every number between zero and nine for each underscore. Though, the datapad seemed to be doing so at a quicker pace and within moments found the five numbers that made up the system lock code. It transferred the numbers to the frigate terminal and a beep echoed through the room.

"I'm in, sir." She figured communication may be best, since she, and most others who knew her talents, had different ways of going about things. The woman didn't want to leave the man who taught her in the dust now did she? "Now I have to establish the full link after finding the back door."

"Back door?"

"Yeah, the techs and coders always leave a backdoor for themselves in case of a full lock down. I'm in the system, but in order for me to establish the full link in order to do anything other mess with simple controls, I need to get in through the back door." Her voice was low and stable and yet it was clear that she was thoroughly enjoying herself.

"Very well then... Carry on, but communicate with me, I want to know your process." The officer said softly, brow quirked as he wrapped his mind around what he had just heard, keeping the information in the back of his mind for future lessons.

With a nod Jae went back to work, this time typing a click about on her datapad. "I need to find the raw code and bring it up on my datapad, then run it against the run code on the terminal. The difference is that the stuff I'm going to bring up on my datapad is what the ship's tech would see, and the stuff on the terminal is what anyone else would see."

The officer nodded, his eyes showing true interest. "And what will running the two data sources against each other do?"

Jae chuckled as she finally found the raw data file and brought it up on her datapad, revealing many blocks and lines of pure binary. "When I run them against each other, I'll find the difference between them, and the difference will be my way in."

"The back door." His voice was laced with a soft, yet stifled chuckle.

Jae, however didn't hold back from chuckling. "Exactly, sir. Ah got it." She said as she brought up the raw data on the terminal screen now. "I'm getting ready to run them against each other. Ready and... go!" Right as she finished her sentence her datapad began to beep every few moments, signifying that it was going through the separate blocks and lines of coding.

An excited squeal erupted from the one-eyed woman's lips as watched her datapad point out the differences between the two bits of code. "Well here we go, I found the back door." Her voice was full of excitement, mainly for the fact that within the new few minutes this test would finally be over. "Now I have to re-run the anomaly code through my datapad in order to activate the back door." She set back to work, then, typing away on her datapad, as her actions where mirrored on the frigate's terminal screen. "Code has been run, and I've established the full link. Ready to shut 'er down." The woman went back to typing, opening files, sifting through codes, opening more files and bringing out the one command that she wanted. She ran it through her datapad, which transferred to the terminal screen and within moments the engine of the simulated frigate began to die down and come to a complete stop.

The officer behind her chuckled softly and nodded. "Nice work, Caldwin-"

"Wait not done yet."

"But you only had to-" The man was cut off by an automated voice that began to ring throughout the frigate.

Jaenna 'StarFruit' Caldwin is awesome. Jaenna 'StarFruit' Caldwin is awesome.

As Jae turned around, arms crossed her shoulders and an excited yet cocky smirk plastered to her features, the officer could only smile and shake his head.
