The rain made steam rise off her bare arms. Xylonia’s head felt more and more clear as each foot hit the ground. Xy smiled as she listened to Celine. She was touched the woman went out of her way to ask her to go on a run with her. Running had helped her feel better about failing her close combat class.
I’ll have to retake it. A sad sigh escaped her lips, and Celine stopped and looked at her.
“What’s wrong?”
Xy stopped as well, stretching her legs a bit, “Ah, I just failed my first class I opted into. I was just thinking about how I have to retake it is all.”
Celine stretched herself as well since they were idle. “What class?”
“Close combat.” Xy stared out into the forest beyond.
“Why did you fail?” Celine asked.
Xy continued to stare out into the forest. She thought about the class, and how she blacked out most of time, not even learning what the instructor had taught.
“I just wasn’t there.” Xy’s eyes swirled between grey and blue. “Ever been out there?” She was enticed by the forest.
“Sure. Quite a few times.” Celine stepped up next to Xy, eyeing her with concerned eyes.
“I could use an escape from the base for a short time. I’ve still got a couple days of leave, want to go camping?” Xy threw the question out there, hoping Celine would want to go.
“Hmmmm, I supposed I could go, I have a couple days too. Oh, why not?” Celine smiled at Xy.
“Let’s go pack and get the frell out of dodge.” Xy turned and ran back the way they had come.
She ran faster than before, eager to take a break from the military. Celine easily kept up and they made it back to the base in no time. The two women split ways to go pack. Xy quickly stepped into the shower. Closing her eyes, she let the hot water run over her. The stress had gotten to her, and she hadn’t really realized it till now.
Frakk this. I’m going to get some rest and relaxation. Frakk everyone here at this damn hell hole. I hate it. Not wanting to be on base a minute longer than she had to, Xy stepped out of the shower and dressed. The phone started ringing as she grabbed a bag from the closet and blindly threw things into it without looking. Her silver eyes glanced at the flashing light telling her who was calling. It was Heliwer. She turned her back to the phone and finished filling her bag with miscellaneous clothes and items, not even caring what went in it. She did carefully put on her holsters and weapons, and concealed her knives on her. After zipping the pack, she attached her rifle to it securely and threw the pack over her shoulders.
Heliwer’s voice drifted to her from the answering machine as she closed the door and chose to ignore him, “Xy? You there? Hey Xy, c’mon pick up. We need to talk…”
Sorry, Heli. I need to escape for a couple days. I’ll catch up with you when I get back. Xy met Celine at the base’s edge and the two women headed out to be alone in the wild.
The trees and foliage surrounded them, all sound and scents of the busy base behind them. Feeling free for the first time since the Vast Empire captured her, Xylonia let out a hoot of glee and took off running up the trail. She actually giggled like a little girl, holding out both arms, letting her hands touch leaves as she ran past them.
“C’mon Celine! Hehehehe!” Xy’s voice was charming for once, instead of grating.
Celine kept up with the lighthearted Xylonia. A smile spread on Celine’s lips from Xy’s contagious enthusiasm.
“Wow, you weren’t kidding when you said you needed an escape huh?”
“Yeah, I guess I didn’t even know how badly I needed it, till we got out of there.” Xy looked over at Celine next to her. “So, where to? Got an idea where we can set up camp?”
Celine nodded and continued on ahead. “I think I know the perfect place.”
