Tadath, seat of the Vast Empire’s government and military, is the center of the Vast Empire’s power and influence, commerce and its most important world. Its defenses were the heavier than any other world in VE space, and it served as the headquarters of the VE’s elite Stormtrooper and Navy corps. But one cold winter, during the shortest days, Tadath’s defenses had been cracked, and its capital, Sianat, had been bathed in blood.

All of this had been the work of J’ak Frozt and his organization. It was only thanks to the actions of Phoenix company that Tadath itself was not permanently crippled by the cyber-attack that had briefly taken down the vaunted defenses of the Empire’s most important world.

Stormtrooper Wing: Fort Sexton, Tadath

“So you ordered the destruction of a highly valuable research station? And you actually did it, Commander?” the scientist demanded, his own uniform’s captain’s bars conflicting with his non-military regulation hair cut and thick spectacles and nervous demeanor. “That station was making crucial developments in the analysis of dozens of new species! And you burned it up and threw it all into a fire like it was nothing, you barbarians!”

Gates rose from his chair, but Havock shook her head imperceptibly. The three of them - Havock, Vask, and Gates were all in dress-uniform and were present for the ‘debriefing’ of the Observation Platform 86-Alpha mission. Rarely had Garryll been present for a debriefing that included the science branch of the Army as well as both Stormtrooper and Navy upper-ranks.

“Captain, please refrain from insulting the soldiers,” said the Stormtrooper Colonel who was presiding over the debriefing, stressing the word ‘soldiers.’ “Continue, Major.”

“Most of the details are classified, Colonel. Commander Vask responded to our call, and used his initiative to help us complete our objective,” Havock said.

“You had orders to destroy the station?” asked the Navy Captain, sitting beside the Colonel.

“Our objective changed when the station became unreclaimable. Almost every mission has a contingency plan. It was all we could do to escape with our lives, sir,” Gates inserted. “If you’ve seen the vids and our after-action reports, I think you’d agree.”

“I have,” the Stormtrooper officer said, “And-”

He was interrupted by a knock on the conference room door. “Enter.”

A pair of tall men entered the room, uniforms unmarked except for their rank pins - a lieutenant and a commander. “Major Havock? Captain Gates?”

The two of them turned around.

“We’re rather in the middle of something, Commander,” the Colonel said.

“I have the authority to interrupt this, sir,” the man replied. He handed the Stormtrooper a datapad and gestured for the Phoenix officers to follow him.

“What do you need, Commander?” Gates asked as they left the conference room.

“I’ve got a problem that Phoenix Company is...uniquely qualified for,” the man replied. “My name is Orr. Lieutenant Andrews is one of the ARC controllers. I’m the leader of ARC squad Iota.”

“ARC? What do you need with us Stormtroopers?” Havock asked.

“I’d prefer to only explain it once; I’ve gathered the Squad leaders of your company,” Orr replied.

They entered into the Phoenix conference room. Joamer, Brightstar and Skarr stood up as they entered. Skarr gestured at the two men. “What’s up with this, Major?”

“We’re ARCs, Sergeant Major,” said Orr.

The SLs had a visible response - but it was more surprise than anything. They looked at Havock for any hint of why they were here, but all she could do was shrug.

“I’ll lay it out straight for you, Phoenix. ARC Team Theta investigated a tip, and they ain’t back yet. They haven’t even written.”

Havock stiffened at the news, but it only drew a nervous chuckle from the SLs. Garryll spoke up. “You sure it isn’t just a communications problem?”

“It’s been two-and-a-half weeks since the last communique. Even bad comms can’t cover that.”

“Okay, then,” Havock said, some agitation creeping into her voice. “How did Theta get deployed somewhere even an ARC team can’t fight out of?”

“Simple. We had someone tip us off. Andrews - get Ms. Sleicer, please,” Orr said, gesturing at the door. The man opened the door and walked out of the room, returning a moment later with a woman in tow.

“Jana Sleicer, tech expert, and the reason Theta was deployed,” Orr said, as the woman walked in. “She’s...worked with Phoenix before.”

“I was abducted, Commander. Jester squad took me hostage when Stormtroopers invaded a base on Anteevy. It just so happens that that same base is now active again.”

“Anteevy... what did we go there for?” Gates muttered.

“J’ak Frozt,” Orr said, flatly. “Created a program that was capable of taking down the Tadath Defense Grid.”

“Tough customer. What’s the relationship?” Gates asked.

“I’m not sure,” said the woman. “But look - whoever it is used to be there, in the organization.”

“What’s this new organization want?” Skarr asked.

“Theta’s initial findings suggest some sort of strike against the VE. They went in before discovering anything other than the name of the organization - ‘Blanchard,’” Orr said. “We’re pretty sure Theta’s been captured. We need someone to go in, get them out, and take this ‘Blanchard’ apart, base and all - since you folks seem to be experts at leaving bases in pieces when you leave, this shouldn’t be an issue.”

*** *** VSD Dominion, Anteevy Space *** ***

The Victory-Class Star Destroyer dropped back into real-space with a flicker. Onboard, its passengers - the Stormtroopers of Phoenix Company - stood up and got their stuff together.

“This is the Commander speaking. We have reached Anteevy. Prepare to disembark.”

OOC:

The HSC has arrived!

Phoenix company is assigned to infiltrate the base and then go about various objectives.

All squads will be opposed by mercenaries with full-body armor, usually in black, with good training and weaponry. Each squad will have one or two ARC troopers attached to them. These troopers will be competent, but they’ll be new ARCs

As usual, please stick with squad gear, and get any other items approved by your SL, and let the SL/ASL post first, unless you get permission.

First Objectives:

Eclipse: Determine who is in command of this base and why/how. Enter via the same route as ARC Team Theta - an old backdoor that leads from the surface into the depths of the base. Expect resistance.

Skarr/Kait's POV

It was a hurried event, trying to get to the shuttle. But Skarr managed to keep the squad, fire team, and ARCs to the shuttle without getting them all lost. Eclipse and Umbra weren’t a cohesive whole yet and the addition of the two ARC troopers did not help one bit. Except for who one of those ARC members were. It seemed that Havock knew just who to send to Eclipse. And so for this mission, Eclipse was accompanied by an ex-Theta member, Lancer. The tall soldier was more than willing to work with Skarr and seemed to be more in charge than the second man. The second ARC trooper was a little more green. The man had some idea of what to do, but he was clearly new to the ARC thing.

This would also mark the first official mission that both Eclipse and Umbra were undertaking. The three young hopefuls were just recently added to Eclipse, after a drop in personnel on the squad itself. Sadly, that left Skarr with four rookiees to command. He did not much like it, but the odds were fairly even, there were four experienced soldiers around too. He also did not like the odds they were against. The reports he was reading on the Blanchard listed them as extremely dangerous, highly skilled mercenary types. Not the kind of enemy to throw rooks at.

Either way, it had to be done. Phoenix was being trusted with the utter destruction of the base. Skarr had his orders. Find out who was commanding the base and how. Skarr found that more than amusing. It was difficult learning information like that invading a base by force. It also amused him that Eclipse would be using the same entrance that Theta had used. As if it would work the second time, if the rumors about Theta being captured were correct.

Skarr chuckled inwardly as he remembered Lancer saying something about how they’d never be captured if he had still been apart of Theta. The tall man was always very arrogant, but he did have skills to boast. It was one of the only reasons the VE actually kept him around, despite the rebellious steak he continued to display. Insubordination was unacceptable, unless you got things done like Lancer could. Skarr thought that was one of the reasons the ARC trooper was here. He was especially good at sabotage.

The shuttle rocked as it left the hangar and approached the planet. From what Skarr had heard, the Vast Empire had invaded Anteevy before. Now they were repeating history. The squad leader glanced over at the members of Umbra. Each of them had nervous looks on their faces. Skarr bet that none of them had ever been on such a large scale mission. The largest scale mission most of them must have taken part of would probably have been fetching an officer’s coffee in a certain amount of time. That thought forced Skarr to laugh. The troopers gave him a quick look, but turned their glances the other way when he seen them looking.

***

Kaitlynn was nervous as the shuttle began to enter the atmosphere. She tried to put on a stoic demeanor as the Eclipse troopers and the tall ARC trooper was. They were ready, and she knew it. She had not been a part of a mission before. Not like this. All of the ones she had taken part of were all simulated versions of battles and missions. It both excited her and made her queasy at the same time.

Skarr had told them next to nothing about the mission. Infiltrate a base and expect heavy resistance, was all he had told them. She had heard his slight emphasis on the word heavy. Kait wasn’t sure if he was worried or excited about the mission. Either way, he had a self assured air about him that told her he had been through all of this before. Zippy, Anival, and the ARC trooper, Lancer, Kait reminded herself, all seemed ready to go. Kait made a promise to herself to be just as stoic as them.

***

The shuttle rocked as it landed. Skarr urged his squad out of the hatch. They had landed a good distance away from the entrance. It was a short trek there, but they had landed far enough out to avoid sensors. It was time for Eclipse to make themselves known to the enemy.

Zippy/Aneshi POV

The shuttle landed on the snow. This was the moment Zippy was waiting for. To prove himself. Not only to his squad, but to the Arc troopers he was also working with. Zippy stepped off of the shuttle onto the newer world and on top of everything, it was snowing. He had heard off Anteevy before and how they had been to this planet on past assignments and it was no surprise they had to return here really. Seemed some people just didn't know who they're dealing with. Zippy looked over at Aneshi and noticed his worried look. He knew as much as the rest of the squad that Umbra hadn't seen much action in the past. This was their first real assignment with Eclipse, and Zippy knew that coordination may be a little off with them all, but he had faith that they would pull through. Aneshi he payed most attention to. He wanted to personally make sure that he succeeded with the squad and that there would be no serious problems to deal with. Instructing Aneshi came easy to him for the most part. The trooper had the same type of joking humor and was always ready for the next assignment. Sort of idolized him for it. Zippy turned his attention to the planet.

Zippy took a step forward and he felt a sharp pain shoot down his spine. This was no normal assignment. He could feel it throughout his body. When he cringed, he knew this wasn't going to be like any mission he had ever been on before in the VE. Their mission was to figure out who was commanding the base of operations here and how they were doing it. It was a rather interesting mission to him. The thought of snooping around, enemy resistance, and the constant threat of danger intrigued him in every way possible. The though that he loved most though was being with a few new members of the squad. Nice to see some new faces, although it could have been better circumstances then this. Nevertheless, he was excited to see how they reacted in action. It would be a hefty test for them, but Zippy was sure that his squad leader and Anival were just as excited as was.

***

Aneshi had stepped off the transport right after Zippy. This was it for him. His first real assignment with a real squad of the VE. His excitement was enough to overcome his focus, but he kept it at bay. He knew this was no time for joking around, as much as he wanted to. He thought to himself constantly about his weapons being set to go, did he remember his ration packs, spare ammo. All the thoughts kept running through his head. He did not want to disappoint his new team and he intended to do his best. This was no target practice, this was for real. You shoot to kill, and your enemies will be doing the same. Aneshi looked over at the other soldiers or Umbra. He could see in their faces that they had the same little nervousness as he did and was sure they all had similar thoughts. Aneshi walked and stood next to Zippy. It was a moment which he had always dreamed of. Being with a squad on a dangerous assignment on a planet that was beyond dangerous.

Aneshi was beyond excited to see some action. The targets he practiced on were nothing compared to what he actually wanted to do. Seeing some live action, with a bunch of real soldiers around him. He wasn't really told much about the mission exactly, but he overheard enough of it and was sure details would be told to him in the future. He knew they were to figure out who was running the base here and was pretty much the jest of what they were assigned to do. He had no worry that they wouldn't get the job done, because he had faith in his superiors that they would get the job done with minimum casualties. More or less, he was looking forward to working with his new family.

***

Zippy continued to survey the area. He could clearly see the base, even though it was a little trek away. They had landed just fair enough from the base so the sensors wouldn't go off, but he was sure the base was expecting company. Seems where ever Eclipse went, their enemies some how knew they were going to be there. Maybe it was because they weren't very discrete. Whatever the reason, Zippy was ready to go. He looked at his squad leader who was getting things ready to move out, and Zippy was hoping soon as usual. He wasn't really sure what Anival was doing, but was sure he was getting some supplies ready or what not. Nevertheless, this was no time for mistakes. He knew one thing for sure, Eclipse was in for the mission of a life time.

Anival/Edgter

Anival noticed every little move made by their new additions, all of umbra seemed to glow with anticipation, and he could practically smell their excitement. The two ARC’s held their face with indifference, as did Skarr, and Anival. Zippy’s was more a face of joy, as for Edgter, he was trying to control his face, but the result was a look of constipation. Anival let a chuckle escape. He had never liked space travel, but had grown accustomed to the idea, for him, and the rest of the corps, it was a way of life. The engines hum was a part of him as his heartbeat.

Their current target was Anteevy, a place Anival had been to before, for some reason, the mission seemed a blank, and he shrugged his shoulder and continued on with his squad. They landed on the snow covered ground. The pure white, Anival knew, would soon be soiled with not so pure blood, it would probably be theirs, or the enemies, now was the time for action.

=========================

Edgter immediately noticed the difference in attitudes once they disembarked the ship. Edgter started to shake, from the nerves, or from the cold, he knew not. He started to process many different scenarios in his head, him lying lifeless on the ground kept creeping up on him. Edgter focused, he was trained to think. The land offered little protection; he assumed they were out of sensor range, which meant they were out of communications range. In this scenario he would post a sniper scout or two, once they took care of the enemy, they would go to an emergency point, to communicate what they saw.

Edgter kept waiting for a shot to ring, and someone head to go flying; when none came he voiced something out loud. “Ha, idiots, I guess they aren’t as smart as we-“ a shot missed him by inches. Everyone raised their rifles and looked about, no one saw anything.
“Hit the ground!”

Two more shoots sizzled into the ground, steam arose into the air.

“Snipers, close by, everyone switch to infrared.” Skarr made a hand signal that Edgter didn’t know, he looked around and saw heads nod, he felt frustrated, and was about to say so when he noticed another trooper making hand signals, this one he understood.

Target spotted. He took everything into account, and came to a conclusion, Skarr wanted comm silence. He switched to infrared and targeted the sniper, he was laying belly down, aiming down his scope. A spike in the readings, and the snipers head exploded. Edgter looked around, and notice the ARC’s barrel smoking.

A sudden reverence for the man’s skill overcame him, Edgter used to think the STC was the best of the best, he now knew, that there was a third tier, an Elite for the Elite. A snowball hit him on the head; it was one of the umbra troopers, it was a clear “be careful!”

Skarr motioned for the squad to move out.

Lancer/Skarr

Lancer smiled grimly as the man’s head exploded. He was suited for long range combat. Hell, he was suited for short range combat. Zane Carthow, Lancer, was an ARC trooper, the best of the best. He felt the awe of the rookiees when he had made the shot and he relished in it. In the back of his mind, he knew that while the others were trying to act unimpressed, they still were. How could they not be, when this amazing and, dare he say it, handsome man had so skillfully killed a sniper with an assault rifle? It was his job to do this good and he did it even better.

He rose from the ground as Skarr motioned them onward. The muscular squad leader had been a friend to Zane and just about the only person he could stand taking orders from. Mainly because the SL ordered Zane to do the things he wanted to do anyway. Why couldn’t anyone else see that? If they did not want Zane to be insubordinate, they should order him to do the things they wanted. Or even give him command. He chuckled as he realized what a bad idea that would be. Skarr was making hand signals again, telling the squad to go slowly, cautiously, and watch for other contacts.

***

The snow continued to fall. Norith hated snow. At least when he wasn’t wearing armor. For now though, he felt nice and warm. The suit was doing its job. The base was closer now, but there was still a threat of snipers. He had ordered all of the squad to keep an eye out for snipers and ambushes, but he could tell that the two ARC troopers were more attentive for the snipers. As Lancer had shown, he could easily take one down. But Skarr was not sure about the other one, Gorm, he think was the name.

As they approached the base, Skarr could make out several guards near the entrance Eclipse was supposed to use. It would be a great chance to get Umbra’s feet wet. Granted Skarr didn’t want to start their glorious soldiering career with action such as this, but it had to be done. The SL held up his hand, stopping his squad and various attachments. He hiked up the hill closest to him, being extremely careful to avoid the eyes of the guards.

His electro binoculars came off of his belt. The door was set into a small box above ground. The box was covered in snow, piling up as a small hill. There was a guard detail of about fifteen men. There was an area in front of the door that was completely that had been completely stamped down. The guards had also set up riot barriers in the area. They had been expecting trouble then. This meant trouble for Eclipse.

Skarr climbed back down the hill. He switched off his comm and motioned for the squad to come closer. Using only his vocabulator, he spoke to them:

“There are about fifteen of them there. They have riot barriers set up, so they’re expecting fire. Lancer, I want you to take Gorm and flank them to the right. Umbra, flank from the left. Eclipse, we’re charging straight on.” Skarr explained to them.

“Now are we ready, Eclipse?” Skarr asked.

“Damn straight,” Lancer replied, “You do know that it’s only going to take me to kill them all, right?”

Zippy/Aneshi

Zippy was ready for action. His weapons were calling out to him to pull the trigger at a moments notice, and he finally got the chance. Skarr finally gave issues as the squad approached the base. Eclipse was to charge right up the middle at the enemy. Was this reckless, yes, and was Eclipse used to this, of coarse. Umbra was ordered to flank on the left and this would be a good opportunity for Umbra to really get some battle experience under their belts. Zippy and the rest of Eclipse took charge nearly right after their orders were issued and they took off in a flash. Before Zippy could even realize what was going on, the entire group had moved into their ordered positions and were holding their respected lines. He took a well placed shot at one of the guards and nailed him in the upper torso. Zippy always did take pride in the well placed shots he took. Turning over to glance at Umbra, he noticed Aneshi holding his ground, ducking behind cover from enemy blaster fire.

"Hey Skarr! I notice Umbra is doing rather well currently, wouldn't ya say?" Zippy yelled out over the roar of heavy blaster fire around them.

"I would notice more if I wasn't being blasted at Zippy now wouldn't I! Skarr ordered back at the battle hardened soldier. Lets take care of these guards first, then see how they held up!"

Zippy ducked behind some crude cover as a large barrage of blaster bolts came flying past his head. Noticing Anival right near him, he shit off a few shits and picked off two more soldiers. The accuracy of his squad was impressive. He never really took a notice at it for the most part. Only a small portion if guards remained and he wondered what Aneshi must of been thinking about.

***

Aneshi was shaking. Not the normal nervous shaking, but the type you get from an adrenalin rush. Aneshi rolled behind cover and popped his head up to observe his surroundings. He noticed now that there were only a handful of guards left, and also noticed how smoothly his other squad mates were acting together. He tried to not focus on that now though because there was more important matters to attend to.

Aneshi popped up from cover and aimed down his sights. With perfect timing, he placed a perfect shot at one of the guards hands and shot his weapons clean from it. This accuracy even shocked Aneshi for a second as more blaster fire rained down upon Umbra. He turned his attention to his other, fellow recruits. They  to were holding there own as best they could. He nocticed them being catious with every shot they took and made sure it was clear before they came up from behind cover. Along with focus, Aneshi felt excitement and the thrill of being in his squad. It was a feeling he hadn't felt in such a long time.

***

"Alright squad, finish them off! There is only a couple left now! Umbra, move up! We're taking these bastards down!" Skarr said, yelling out the new orders.

Zippy ran quickly towards the guards post and jumped by one of the remaining guards. Noticing Zippy quickly, the guard threw a hefty punch at Zippys stomach as he turned around. He quickly dodged the punch and threw one back at the mans face. The man was about average size and the punch knocked him back a bit and this was just long enough for Zippy to tackle him. Grabbing his head quickly before the soldier knew what hit him, he snapped his neck as quickly as he could. By the time he was done, the rest of his squad was on him and was finished with the remaining soldiers.

"Well, that went rather well I think, Anival stated over the smoldering rubble and pile of dead bodies before them. So, how you holding up Umbra?"

"I'm doing pretty good. That was such a rush! Aneshi said with excitement. I'm looking forward to doing that again! Just, everyone working so well together, the movements, the blaster fire, Gah! It such a thrill!"

"Well I can see someone's still got some adrenaline pumping threw their veins huh? Zippy joked. As fun as it can be, remember why we are. To figure out what is going on here and why it's going on. Their is time for celebration when the job is done."

Zippy thought to himself about Aneshi's progress. He was already becoming quite proud of Umbra for holding their own, but there was still a lot left of the mission left to go. He looked forward to seeing what was left for the mission and what surprises that it had in sotred for them. Needless to say, this was a proud moment for Zippy and Eclipse.

Anival shot at the enemy guards, they were well trained, and had great weapons, but they were not used to endless campaigns, living only to complete the objectives set before them by unseen masters. All of that went through Anivals mind; he contemplated the fact that his life was almost meaningless.

He smiled, a comparison coming to him, all of the corps, were droids, moving busily with what seemed like purpose, a little more thought, no they were more like bees, drones mind-slaved to a queen, the queen being High Command, they went around doing what they wanted.

Slow, and methodical shots came from the muzzle of Anival’s rifle, each shot found a target, weather it was a kill or a maim, he didn’t know, his body was on auto pilot, his mind away, drifting, so it came as a shook when Zippy tackled him, Anival’s first thought was to empty his clip into his attackers belly, the second was an image of a court martial, and his execution, the third, was, finally, a dawning reality, he had almost had his head shot off. Some example I am.

Anival was worried, he didn’t want the greens to see him as weak, but it appeared he was safe; umbra was busy trying to avoid getting injured, and busy trying to one up the guy next to him. The soldier who Anival thought was shining the most seemed to be Aneshi, the trooper seemed too much like Zippy, Anival frowned, Zippy was always happy; it was kind of depressing, at least to him.

The soldier did look like he was comfortable in the field, unlike Edgters gawking, almost awkward movements, he seemed overly sure, and missed many shots. Anival made a note to tell Skarr to ask Edgter to conserve his ammo if he wasn’t going to hit a target. Anival reined in his wandering mind, and focused on the task at hand, killing everyone who hadn’t arrived with him.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Edgter couldn’t believe they were just charging up the middle like they were, it was suicide, every nerve and cell in his body was screaming for him to get to cover and plan some sort of trickery. He couldn’t understand why his squad leader would order them to do what they were doing. It made no strategic sense, yet it seemed to be working.
Edgter figured it was luck. He took aim and fired, his shot missed, he was a good shot, nor a marksmen, or sniper material, but he was a good shot, so why was he missing so much? Maybe it was the fact that he had rarely been on a battlefield, and rarely was he the one doing the fighting.
It was going to take some time to get used to it, finally Edgter had hit his target, he smiled and turned to brag, but kept his mouth shut. Skarr was making the best use of his men while simultaneously killing his targets, Zippy was hitting men left and right , and Anival seemed to pick his targets carefully, every shot was lethal. In the instant it to Edgter to turn around, the skirmish was over.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Well, that went rather well I think” Anival said, he was standing over a steaming pile of rubble, and a pile of bodies, all had scorch marks on them, all were lifeless. “So, how you holding up Umbra?"

"I'm doing pretty good. That was such a rush!” Aneshi’s excitement was evident. “I'm looking forward to doing that again! Just, everyone working so well together, the movements, the blaster fire, Gah! It such a thrill!" Anival smiled, the soldier was really green.

"Well I can see someone's still got some adrenaline pumping threw their veins huh?” Zippy joked.” As fun as it can be, remember why we are. To figure out what is going on here and why it's going on. There is time for celebration when the job is done." Anival was shocked at Zippy’s last comments. My little trooper is all grown up Anival laughed silently at his own joke.
“Alright Umbra, bring up the rear, ARC’s at the front, let’s go in.” ordered Skarr.

The squad made its way across bodies, a guard was still alive, his jaw missing. Anival wondered if Edgters rampant shots had done this. He continued to walk, he heard rustling, and turned, Kait was trying to administer first aid to the wounded guard, Anival walked towards them.

He tapped Kait on the shoulder, she turned around, Anival motioned for her to put away her gear, and took out his blaster. An audible intake of breath came from two members of Umbra, he shot the man, he would later tell Umbra why he had done it. There was no recovery from that wound, it would have been cruel to let the man live.

Anival turned around to rejoin Skarr and Zippy, he found Skarr staring at the scene, Skarr only gave a nod of approval and turned around, Anival took the cue and the squad kept moving, he had given them their first taste of war. He hoped they had learned it, show no mercy, and expect the same. With that, they trudged to the entrance of the base, awaiting the beasts hidden within, them, and the building.

Zaria felt her stomach flutter as the hum of the engines woke her from a sleepy state. She knew that this wasn’t at all what a Trooper should act like, what they described to her in training was something much more disciplined; yet, here she was half asleep in the back of the cargo carrier awaiting drop-off in a planet she had only heard of hoping that she could: a. find her squad and b. that she could make herself as less of a fool as possible. After all, she had already made something of a fool of herself and she hadn’t even made an appearance yet!  She looked around at the various supplies as the Trooper pilot’s voice told her that they would be landing soon in a bored tone, he was certainly not enjoying the punishment for last week’s binge. She managed a half-hearted reply and double checked her supplies and weaponry. How did this happen…, she sighed heavily.

///// Zaria stood in her uniform feeling particularly self conscious as she waited for the commanding officer she didn’t know. She smoothed her uniform as she heard the door behind her open, her shoulders stiffening as the female commander walked around to sit at her desk. She ignored Zaria almost entirely as she looked through the paperwork lying on her desk.

“Private Bernadette reporting, Ma’am.” Zaria said in the clear voice acquired in bootcamp.

“At ease, Private…” The female commander said without looking up. Zaria relaxed a bit as she heard this before the commander continued, “You showed promise in training, Trooper. We’ve decided to assign you to Eclipse squad. They’re being briefed in ------, report to -------- immediately. The squad will be departing soon…you might want to hurry; there’s a rush to get everything ready for the coming assignment. Paperwork gets lost, messages don’t get received, and things sometimes run amok in times such as these….”
/////

Zaria shook her head placing a gloved hand on her temple as she realized that she couldn’t remember the specific details that she needed the most, who was she supposed to report to?!? The ship landed with a shake and a noise that she didn’t at all find comforting.

“The report says that your squad should have landed here less than half an hour ago. I’ll stay here for a bit, keep in touch. A Trooper will cover you for a distance; once you find them communicate back on this frequency so I can leave.” The Trooper half-assed even this as she placed her helmet on and began making her way off the ship followed closely by another trooper who was faceless and nameless to her. The world was covered in white, snow, just as the simulations in training. Zaria responded just as half-assed and began walking through the world of white with her silent counterpart.

Ebony eyes moved quickly over the scene, her blaster following the movement of her eyes. According to the pilot she should be fine this far out and Eclipse, along with the ARC troopers who followed, should not have reached the objective yet. If she hurried she might just catch up.

///// Zaria pushed through the rush at the terminal, looking for her squad among the many ships. If only she could remember the name of the officer she was supposed to report to! Star? SarK? She sighed audibly shifting her supplies to her opposite shoulder as she approached a fellow Trooper who looked both hurried and flustered.

“Hey, do you know where I can find Eclipse Squad? “ She asked shifting her weight from one foot to another. She was nervous and as always she became more fidgety as her nerves elevated.

“They’re gone, girly. You just missed your ticket outta here and outta this rank.” He muttered pointing at his sleeve angrily as he shoved past her.

Zaira’s expression fell and she cursed, standing in the middle of the terminal not really wanting to find a commanding officer to help and berate her for being a rookie. So much for the prestige she’d earned herself in Training…
//////

Zaria heard noise up ahead, remembering training simulations, and with even movements she turned her infrared on pointing her blaster ahead of her. The Trooper with her followed suit, turning to cover the rear and side she was not. There was a group ahead of them, what appeared to be bodies on the floor. She moved as quietly as she could ahead trying to make out who she was dealing with, preparing to run or shoot if necessary. She removed infrared and with relief Zaria noted that they were Troopers. She made a quick call back to the pilot awaiting her and nodded to her accompanying Private that all was clear here. He left with little hesitation, which wasn’t at all comforting…at all.

"Halt, who goes there?" A voice from among the group called to her.

She raised her hands over her head and called to them, walking slowly closer. Zaria knew that she was in uniform but wanted to make sure they knew she wasn’t a threat, though that seemed obvious to her, she wanted to avoid any unnecessary conflict. The whole group had blasters pointed at her, cautious even with someone in the uniform in this unfamiliar place. One of the troopers looked up, startled, pointing his blaster and by his body language he was much more nervous than she wanted.
Edgter stared at the newcomer, his nerves or the cold making him shake. The adrenaline from the skirmish as well as his overall sense of foreboding made him overlook the uniform for a second. Thoughts of infiltrations and spies murdering unsuspecting troopers came to mind and in that moment where his mind trailed off he fired. His eyes widened as he realized what he had done and his shock became dread as he realized his blaster had made contact with this  unidentified Trooper.

“Stand down, rookie!” Skarr’s angry yell caught Edgter almost as heavily as a blow might have.  There would certainly be some serious explaining to do and even more serious repercussions, he was sure. Skarr moved fast commanding the group to walk toward the uniformed figure, blasters still pointing, as he hurried toward Zaria.

The hot pain of blaster fire grazed her left arm and Zaria dropped her own blaster, gritting her teeth as she gripped the first injury she had ever acquired. And by one of her own nonetheless! There was a certain irony in that….She found herself wanting to laugh despite the stinging pain. As Skarr got close enough to see her rank and affiliation he paused, lowering his blaster cautiously.

“Identify yourself, Private.” He yelled at her from where he stood about eight feet from her, the rest of the group still ready to fire at any moment.

“Private Bernadette, Sir. Newest member of Eclipse Squad here to do my duty, Sir.” Zaria was surprised to find her voice not quavering. Without haste she reached for the orders that she had received upon departure from base. She held these out to the man she assumed was in command with her good arm…Star...He motioned for one of the group to retrieve it, this Trooper handed it to him hastily and returned to his place in line. The muscular officer looked it over and motioned for them to lower their blasters before calling for who Zaria assumed was in charge of first aid. Well, no one could say she didn’t know how to make an entrance; she grimaced returning the grip to her injured arm and wondering just how badly she’d made herself look as another Trooper tended to her arm and the commanding officer gave her a look she couldn’t quite identify. I was starting to get my hopes up, that’s for sure.

Kait/Skarr

Kait attended to the new arrival’s wound. She had been shot in the left arm and the young woman had no idea who had fired the shot. No one seemed ready to confess either. Skarr also did not seem willing to pursue the issue. There were no serious issues and he was commanding an almost fully green song. Kait was a bit suspicious that it was Edgter, but the man was jumpy and he could not be held fully responsible for an accident.

Skarr paced up to Kait and Bernadette slowly. The young girl could see the concern in Skarr’s face. He bent down and nodded to Kait, taking the bandages from the young girl’s hands. Kait stood and walked back over to Aneshi and Edgter. The two of them were talking in low tones with Anival. From what she could see, the older man was mentoring them on some sort of battlefield lesson while they waited.

She stood back, not listening to their conversation. Kait tried thinking back to the man she had tried saving. She did not know why she had done it. It was something about how much pain the man was in and how sorry she felt. Simulations and real bodies were two different things. Simulations could only do so much of what was actually real. But she resolved that she would not act the same way again. Sure, she would feel sick each time she killed, but it had to be done. After Anival had killed the man, Skarr had hailed her on a secure channel to tell her they would talk about it later. Kait hoped it would not be a reprimand. She looked back up to Skarr and found him talking to the new trooper.

***

“I’m sorry about that,” Skarr assured Bernadette as he wrapped the blaster wound in a bandage. “New troopers and all, they’re a bit jumpy.”

Zaria chuckled a little bit, “It’s understandable. I wouldn’t want anyone I didn’t know getting too close either.” Skarr smiled under his helmet, then grimaced. She could have been injured even worse, or even killed. High Command should have notified him, and that made him angry. If Zaria would have been killed, it would have been blamed on Skarr. Not only did he not like the idea of being court marshaled, he certainly was not a fan of losing a good trooper, no matter how green she may be.

He finished the bandage and grabbed her blaster. Skarr handed it over to her and lead her over to where the rest of the squad was assembled. Lancer looked a bit impatient and he was waving Skarr to get on with things. The squad leader did not know what to make of the ARC trooper. He was sure the man was here mostly to gloat to his old ARC squad, but there was a side to Lancer that few people knew. Skarr knew that Lancer was probably really concerned about them.

“Alright. Zippy, Anival, get that door open. Umbra, Zaria, ARCs cover the door.” The squad jumped to the complete the orders. Zippy stood on one side of the door, Anival on the other. Skarr and the rest of the squad, settled behind cover, guns trained on the doors. Zippy and Anival stood poised waiting for Skarr to give the final order. When Skarr gave the motion, Zippy and Anival pulled with all their might.

Blaster fire ringed out of the doors as a hail of bolts came from inside. So, they were expecting us. The mercenaries began coming up from the hall, firing out through the doors. Skarr and the rest of Eclipse stayed behind cover. He was waiting for them all to come out into the cold. Skarr would order everyone to fire onto the exposed mercenaries. Zippy and Anival would rush inside, close the doors enough for some cover, then fire into their backs. It was a simple enough plan and should work well. They were almost out now. Closer, closer...

“Fire!” Skarr shouted as he broke from cover.

Zippy/Aneshi

Just before opening the door, Zippy looked around at his fellow squad mates. He was proud to be serving with his squad, and was thrilled to be seeing Umbra out here with them as well. Needless to say, it was one of those moments where he was proud to be on an assignment with them all, despite the circumstances. At that moment, Skarr gave the order to open the doors.

Blaster fire was coming out like rapid fire. Zippy could barely see his own blaster in front of him, let alone shoot back. The enemy troops were waiting for them to come through the door and it was well planned, accept for the fact that they had no cover. Zippy and Anival had gotten the door open and were returning fire as fast as they could pull their triggers. Zippy was all about accuracy in this fast paced shooting environment and this time was no exception. With precision, he took out two of the enemy soldiers with ease. He could feel the trill of getting kills surging in his veins and every shot to him was just another shot of adrenaline into his body. Zippy could only imagine what Aneshi must of been thinking as they continued to cut down the enemy soldiers. He thought fondly of him whilst in the middle of combat and wanted to make sure that he was doing well, while watching his own progression of coarse. The soldiers began to rush towards them, just as Skarr had planned. Once the soldiers had gotten out of the door, Zippy and Anival then ran into the doors behind them and managed to close them enough for cover, but not so close they couldn't shoot out of. Getting themselves situated, they unleashed a barrage of blaster fire into the unsuspecting mercenaries.

***

Aneshi was in edge. He could feel his pulse every time he took a shot at one of the mercenaries. Him and the rest of Umbra were holding their own so far on this assignment. He thought to himself of how this mission may have been a bit more then he had wanted, but that thought quickly flew out of mind when more fire from enemy soldiers came flying past his head. The mercenaries came out of the door in a head on collision with the rest of the team. He quickly noticed his squad leader and the ARCs light up the unsuspecting mercenaries, quickly making short work of a few of them.

"Watch your left! Their trying to go around and flank us! I'd rather not have bullets coming at our backs!" Skarr quickly yelled out to the rest of the squad.

Aneshi turned to his left and saw a small group of the remaining mercs heading behind a small portion of rubble for cover. Taking out a thermal detonator from his utility belt, he activated it and gave it a toss. Shockingly to even himself, it landed right by the remaining mercs and ignited. Blowing shrapnel in every direction, the mercs that remained were no more. He couldn't help but feel a little accomplished with this.

***

Zippy saw the detonator go flying over head. He had a strange feeling that it was Aneshi's, but he wasn't sure. Coming back out of the door now, he walked over to him to see how he was doing.

"So Aneshi, do tell. Was that your toss I saw over there, or was that just me kidding myself?" Zippy joked.

"No that was me sir. I'm shocked to even myself that I threw it over there with such precision. I had no idea it was going to land right next to them all. Just lucky I guess," Aneshi said with a chuckle.

"Now don't be so bashful soldier. We all get moments like these, and they are good ones. This is a good accomplishment and not to be looked down upon. Good work," Zippy told Aneshi

"Hey Anival. Nice work with helping me with the door. We really gave it to that band of mercs huh?" Zippy tolf Anival as they regrouped near the door.

"Heh, I'll say. Glad to see we did it with no one getting seriously injured. I'd rather not have to hall one of your ass's out of here," Anival said, nudging Zippy's arm.

"Alright squad, there is more then likely more mercs on the way, and that sure as hell wasn't all this base has to throw at us. We must prepare and be vigilant for them. Now lets get a move on." Skarr said, relaying new orders.

For once the comfort of a well maintained shuttle cruising almost silently through space was to the pleasure of Lance Corporal Drex Helban. It was a rare commodity indeed whether travelling for luxury or to a killing field that he had the opportunity to prioritise his thoughts. He had been briefed or at the very least given a quick summary of what he was supposed to be doing. These things never really sunk in with Drex, only ever taking into account where he was going and what he'd be pointing his rifle at when it died. His ears perked up as he realised the pilot had been gibbering away over the on-board com for at least a minute.

“Helban! You still with us back there? Pay attention!” the aggravated tone of the pilot made him smile.

Stifling a chuckle he replied “Aye what is it?”.

With a whining sigh he spoke with an almost defeated voice “We'll be punching though the atmosphere of Anteevy in roughly fifty seconds, you'll be dropped off around the vicinity of the original Eclipse LZ, from there your on your own, understood?”.

“Just keep her low and quite eh? You get to fly back, I don't want them knowing I'm here” Trying to keep at least a hint of seriousness about his voice.

“Helban, please don't tell me how to do my job, I hope your squad leader gives you a hiding for being late” The defeated tone coming from the pilot now replaced with unmistakable anger.

“They'll be happy for the extra trigger finger, I'm all clear on what I'm doing, all quiet from here” Drex then bowed his head to his knees in silent laugher.

He had no idea why he antagonised these fly boys, in the short and few times he'd given it consideration he narrowed it down to two. A relief for nerves or envy over the circumstance that they pop in and out of battle fields without to much of the actual danger being thrown their way. His laughter was abruptly interrupted by the sudden shiver  of the ship making contact with atmospheric pressure. Slamming his helmet over his head and banging a clip into his rifle he arose to full  hight taking grip of the nearest support. The rapid decent of the ship gave him the feeling of vertigo, almost mistook as an adrenaline rush. The rear bay ramp opened revealing the bed of undisturbed snow, with a deep breath he took a starting run to jump the remaining eight foot drop.

His knees bent as he hit the soft planet surface with a tuck and roll landing on all fours need to stop trying to be a smart ass he thought after the impact knocked the wind out of him. Gingerly standing up Drexhel checked the com unit, dead damn it, the wind whistled over the dead, silent field of white as he surveyed his immediate surroundings. A pattern of dark patches just visible caught his eye prints? the reliving thought passed his mind as he broke into a jog towards them. The majority had started to fade with the exception of  one relatively fresh set looks like I'm not the first addition here he smirked as he played with this idea before setting off at a drudging run.

He thought of his pace as less reckless surely Eclipse had mangled  any resistance on their way through, the base itself was not a long journey visible just a short way off in the distance. It wasn't long before the vision of freshly laid out corpses where in plain sight, breaking his pace to slow he admired the impressive spread his soon to be squad mates had left behind, fourteen clean kills and one not so much. The rear entrance of the base couldn’t be far now, even with the sheets of snow falling the base was clearly visible to the naked eye, with caution Drex progressed, he didn't want to cause any sudden panic within the surely nearby squad.

“Now lets get a move on” the commanding voice, clearly authoritative in squad leader style.

Letting his blaster hang at his side Drexhel started a half run with his hands in the air thinking how stupid do I look right now. as soon as he could see the Eclipse squad  they could see him with weapons raised the man closest called out firmly.

“Stop right there!”.

Another from the middle of the pack raised a hand “he's with the empire”.

Drexhel lowered his hands and stepped forward to the squad “Lance Corporal Drex Helban, I've been assigned to Eclipse”.

“Sergeant Major Norith Skarr, Eclipse squad leader, we're”. He stopped short with his head cocked in disbelief at Drex raising his hand.

“With all due respect sir I had the summary before I arrived and I followed your trail here, just tell me where to point and pull the trigger, that's my job” Lowering his hand as he finished the sentence.

Skarr stood for a moment as if measuring the words and actions in his mind to be treated as insubordinate or ignorance before turning to meet the squad “ok, lets move it”.

Drex could not help feeling he might pay for that arrogant gesture when less pressing matters where at hand, but he had found the squad, for that he was appreciative.
Hold your heart in your sleeve, after all you never know when you might get shot in the chest.

Zaria felt her shoulders tense a bit more as her commanding officer came closer. She expected a lecture o r some berating but instead he apologized for the injury and tended her himself. Ebony eyes stared in guarded disbelief as he seemed to be…concerned? Now, that was certainly a new devolvement. None of the commanding officers previous to … Skarr …that was it, had anything to resemble this kind of concern; then again, her life had been in none of their hands.  When he spoke to her she managed a chuckle but she couldn’t exactly remember what she said to him. Her mind was distracted by a slowly spreading feeling of cold in her suit; it wasn’t enough to cause harm but certainly enough for distraction.

When handed her blaster she managed an awkward hold of it in her right hand, her left still stinging with dull pain, and she thought to herself at this moment that it was a good thing to be semi ambidextrous.  Zaria managed a deep breath and gathered her thoughts as quickly as she could. She glanced around memorizing those around her as best she could; she had an odd knack for this sort of thing, and took note to put names to faces as soon as possible. When Skarr gave orders, she felt herself falling into the role expected. She followed suit letting her mind become more Trooper and less Zaria, just as in the Academy. Zaria in took a deep breath and softly exhaled as she got into position, she needed to focus properly. No more mishaps. No more messing up.

Along with the majority of her squad she covered Zippy and Aneshi, she would have to differentiate one from the other at another time, as they opened the door. A part of her was surprised when the sounds of fire started but she recovered from it quickly enough and she began to fire at the Mercenaries. Zaria had to admit that they were well trained, perhaps more so than she expected when she had been told that they would be. A morbid smile came to her lips as she noticed her blasts connect once, twice, three times. That was certainly something that the Academy had done well for her; when she put her eye to a target that target usually went down. Things became a blur and with the blast of a detonator, they were done. Her blaster was slowly lowered to her side and as the adrenaline in her system lowered she once again became aware of the pulsing in her left arm and the chill of the air.

Zaria overheard Zippy speak to Aneshi and recorded them into her inner log; the mentioned of another name had her taking note of Anival’s name as well. Three down, a few to go. she thought to herself with inner amusement. It was then that she heard a yell from someone in the group. The tone was oddly familiar…Zaria allowed her eyes to wander in the direction that her fellow Trooper had yelled, her blaster following the movement of her eyes unconsciously and with surprise she noticed another Trooper approaching.

She had an odd sense of Déjà vu, suddenly, and couldn’t help the bit of laughter that escaped her as the man, Drex Helban, introduced himself. Maybe it was just her but the whole situation seemed oddly reminiscing of her own and somehow oddly as amusing if not more. She thought that her case had been something unusual within the ranks of the Stormtrooper Corps. His arms certainly have more luck than mine she thought stifling another laugh.  Zaria didn’t catch the final exchange between him and her squad leader, Norith Skarr, because at that moment she heard what sounded like an alarm from within the building. Something had already happened within and they weren’t even inside yet. How very disappointing…the thought shocked her. Skarr turned back toward the doors, giving them a calculating look as the rest of the Squad assembled in what Zaria assumed was a normal formation for them. She found herself standing beside the man she had identified as Zippy, awaiting orders.

“It looks like someone’s already beaten us in; stupid bunch set off the alarm, more work for us.” Zaria didn’t know the voice that spoke but what he said amused her all the more. Perhaps she was a bit adrenaline giddy or perhaps very nervous; whatever the case, she had never felt this way before. Skarr looked back at the group and spoke.

“Now we really have our work cut out for us. They’ll be more alert now than ever, with the frakkin alarm, if you see a Merc: shoot. I don’t want any of you to get too trigger happy before we get what we’re looking for, though. We still have a mission, understood?” The muscular man seemed to be measuring exactly what he said and his eyes lingered on Edgter at the end of the speech. Then, he turned back to the doors and with some well known hand signals had them all moving.

They moved with the precision that came almost as second nature after enough simulations and training exercises. Zaria tried to think of herself in another simulation but the pain in her arm kept her mind grounded in a way she felt nothing else might have. Zaria muttered a word of thanks to some unknown being as the warmth of the building enveloped her. The metal walls gleamed dully making her more nervous and even the sounds of the squad moving swiftly through the corridors making her shoulders twitch with tension. Her eyes moved quickly back and forth; the alarm filling her ears and making her head begin to ache.

Skarr took out the alarm, with what seemed an offhanded gesture to her, before motioning for Zippy and Zaria to cover the rear. The whole squad seemed thankful for the silence, though it also seemed to unnerve them all the more. The man she pinned as Aneshi was directed right and an unknown, to Zaria, member of the squad to move ahead. The silence was broken by the sounds of blaster fire, followed closely by the piercing redness of the rounds. Zaria turned toward the sound but could not see much from where she stood behind the taller members of the squad.

“Fall back! Take cover” Skarr yelled from the head of the group. Zaria held her blaster tightly finding herself complying even while her mind seemed all the more detached. So much action, so little time.

Skarr/Lancer

I do not need another arrogant asshole on this squad, Skarr thought, but then he amended his thought to, at least it’s Drexhel. The squad leader had been friends with Drexhel almost since Skarr joined the Vast Empire. They had even served for a little while together. Of course, it had been a while since Skarr had seen the man. But now he was here as an Eclipse soldier. Thankfully no one had shot him. Skarr would liked to have attributed that to fear of being reprimanded by that. His squad was moving very quickly with his orders. He did not know if it was because of him or something about them. Either way, Skarr was glad to see them a lot more responsive.

The squad leader had instructed Gorm and Lancer to take point, as they were both well skilled. Zippy and Zaria had been given the rear. And in between was the rest of the squad, with Skarr leading behind Lancer and Gorm. The alarm klaxons were beginning to anger Skarr, so he fired a blaster bolt into the emitter. The whole squad let out a sigh of relief, which pleased Skarr.

At least the damn thing stopped, Skarr thought, I wonder who tripped it. They moved ahead, but soon enough blasters were firing at them. It had taken Skarr by surprise. Should have expected and ambush. He didn’t stay disappointed in himself for too long as he ordered his squad to fall back a ways. Lancer and Gorm stood their ground, firing into the enemies rapidly, trying to cover Eclipse’s retreat. As Eclipse fled farther back down the hall, the ARC troopers also began to back up.

As soon as Skarr was assured that the squad had fallen back enough, he joined the ARC troopers. The three of the fired upon them until they were thinned out enough to where it was the mercs retreating, not Eclipse. Finally, Skarr called the rest of Eclipse up to finish the rest of the soldiers off. When they were finished off, Skarr ordered the squad to rest.

He was trying to think of the best way to complete his objective. There was no simple answer to the questions. There was always the hope that the mercs would slip up and just say it, but with the base on high alert there was no way that was going to happen. Perhaps, they could interrogate a guard. That would do good, but where exactly would they find one? Eclipse had just killed off most of the offending force that had attacked them. As much as Skarr didn’t want to, he thought he’d have to ask the “expert” about it.

Skarr tromped up to Lancer, sighing the whole way.

***

I do not need another arrogant asshole on this squad, Lancer had thought, I’m the only one they need. Lancer now seen that Skarr was trying to walk up to him, but he kept hesitating. The ARC trooper shrugged and met the squad leader halfway.

“I can recognize the body language, Skarr. What do you need?” Lancer asked over a secure channel. The squad leader’s head snapped to him.

“Dammit, how’d you figure it out?” Skarr asked tersely.

Lancer chuckled slightly. “I’m trained for it remember? That, or I’m just that awesome. I can’t remember.”

Skarr punched him in the chest, ignoring the looks the squad members gave them. “We need to get a hold of a merc. And then interrogate him for what we need.”

Lancer took that through and started thinking. He pulled up a map of the base on his wrist monitor. “Meet me in that room, I’ll have your hostage.” Then the man ran off leaving Skarr to order his troops around.

***

Skarr watched Lancer run off. “Well, squad, let’s start going. Expect resistance.”

So the room we're looking to find is not far from where we are, but we will encounter resistance. The hall we are in is full of storage crates, so we do have some cover.

“With all due respect sir I had the summary before I arrived and I followed your trail here, just tell me where to point and pull the trigger, that's my job”  the new trooper raised his hand. Anival suppressed an urge to shoot the guy. That was a challenge, at least to him, a challenge aimed at Skarr. The man could have stopped with his words, but he had raised his hand in almost dismissal.

Over time, Anival had come to respect Skarr; he was a good man, and a capable leader. No one had died under him, and injuries had been kept to a minimum, in short. Skarr had earned Anival’s loyalty. So it was to be expected.

A thought occurred to Anival, he was brooding over his choice of words when Lancer ran off. Anival snapped to and forgot his line of thought. He cursed and looked expectantly at Skarr, the fact that he hadn’t stopped the man pointed to him having ordered his leave. So he wasn’t worried.

“Well, squad, let’s start going. Expect resistance.” Skarr pointed at Anival and Edgter. “You two take point, and keep your eyes peeled Teviny”

Anival nodded and walked towards the front, he made it a point to bump into the new trooper. Anival started to pick his way through the hallway; he stepped over a body, wishing he could see umbra’s facial expressions. So much was going to happen to them, they would never be the same, from confident kiat, to snobby Edgter, even the timid Aneshi. They would all learn the facts of war, and some of them might even die. It was a sobering thought; at least, it used to be; now it was merely hanging there, in the darkest part, of the most forgotten area of the mind.

As a soldier of the empire, he had learned to forget it.  They had gone about twenty meters, and hadn’t encountered any personnel, a fact, that Anival found disturbing, he walked forward, until they reached an area were six crates dotted the hall, they were in sets of two, one on each side of the hall,  they passed the first one, without incident, halfway through, Anival heard a shuffle of feet. He stopped Teviny before he passed the last two crates. He signaled to Skarr, who nodded and motioned for the squad to disperse along the four crates.

Anival took off his helmet, and backed off, he tossed it in the air, about level with his height, and blaster fire pierced the air, the hat fell unscathed, but the enemy had confirmed the ambush. The element of surprise was gone.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Aneshi~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aneshi walked with a new step, underneath his helmet, he was beaming, and he had gotten a compliment. He was happy for two reasons, the first, praise was praise. As for the second, he wanted to rub it in Teviny’s face. The trooper was always talking down to him and Kiat, he felt superior, and by far, he was the weakest of umbra.
Aneshi first confused, and then puzzled, stopped along with the squad, he noticed the SL motion, and caught the end, cover. He tossed himself onto the floor, landing behind a crate. He heard a chuckle, and blushed, he wondered if he had been too dramatic. He shrugged it off, and settled in, he noticed Anival take of his helmet. Hadn’t he seen Skarr? Then he noticed a toss, and he dived behind cover, the helmet was shot at, but not hit. Aneshi was admiring the teamwork when he noticed Edgter, he hadn’t realized what was happening, and reacted slowly to the events.
He had been hit; he was lying on the floor.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Anival~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Anival fired, ducked, and fired. He was in the moment, full soldier mode on, aiming and shooting, he missed, he was no god, or machine, but for every three shots, he got a hit. 33% wasn’t good, but it was perfect in the current conditions. He heard footsteps and a thud, Aneshi had ran towards the enemy, this, puzzled Anival, until he noticed why, Edgter was on the ground, lying sprawled out. The first thought that came into his mind was crap, I failed whatever test Skarr was performing the second was concern, and shame, the latter should have come first. He reloaded and jumped out of cover, he sprayed the blaster at random, hoping to cause more confusion on the other side while Aneshi got Teviny to cover.

Once Teviny had been rescued, the squad continued attacking, Anival ran over to the fallen man, and took off his helmet, he opened each of his eyelids in succession, then he took a pulse, it was normal, a bit elevated, but normal.

Anival looked over the armor a scorch mark on the chest, but that was it, the shot hadn’t gone through, or had skimmed him, Anival’s inexpert deduction was, shock.

“He’ll be good” Anival left Edgter and continued the firefight.

The redhead felt that her muscles were still tense and she swore to herself that the adrenaline was now becoming almost perpetual in her system. Zaria forced herself to relax her hold on the blaster noticing that her hands were shaking beneath her uniform. That had been her first encounter with real enemies and it had been both liberating and horrifying. The thought that she had managed to move fluidly through the situation made her both calm and proud; the thought that it had been real men out there and that she had , killed , shot at them made her hands shake and her usually glowing features pale considerably. Oddly enough though, she still felt morbidly giddy, her lips turning into a snarky little smile when her mind wandered.

Zaria let ebony eyes follow Skarr with the same guarded caution as before as the exchange between him and another one of Eclipse troopers happened. Her breathing was returning to normal and her hands were beginning to be less shaky. She noted from the stance and body language of the man Skarr spoke to that he seemed to be, well…full of himself  (to be politically correct of course). The squad leader and the trooper seemed to come to some agreement and suddenly they were on the move again, more cautious than before. The man, whose name she was sure she’d find out soon, dashed off ahead of them and disappeared. The rest of the squad walked on, the newer members more nervous and the older more grim. Zaria tuned in to her commanding officer as he spoke to two men she hadn’t yet identified.

Skarr pointed at Anival and Edgter. “You two take point, and keep your eyes peeled Teviny”

She muttered their names to herself to remember them as they moved on down the long corridor. The crates on either side unnerved her, they were so conveniently placed…as if…Her eyes caught the signal as Skarr gave it and she quickly ducked behind one of the crates finding herself once again next to Zippy. Amusement found its way to her gaze at the almost melodramatic move by Aneshi but she turned her gaze quickly back upward toward the corridor. No distractions. With a curious look she noticed Anival remove his helmet; she had just finished registering his features to the name she had for him when the blaster fire ignited toward his helmet. Her now steady hands gripped her blaster and she willed herself to keep them as steady as they were for the sake of hitting what she aimed at and not one of her squad members.

She aimed and fired as quickly as she could, though she noted that compared to the more experienced soldiers she was much slower, trying not to focus on the fact that those were people out there. Zaria had let out half a dozen shots when she noticed the trooper on the floor. Soft, coral colored lips parted in something akin to shock, though it might have leaned on horror, just as her face paled a shade. For a moment her blaster slacked in her hands and then Zippy nudged her saying something that didn’t quite register and she shook her head coming back to her task. He’s a Trooper, that wasn’t set to stun... Zaria tightened her jaw in frustration as she fired, trying to lose herself in the firefight; if it had been serious she would have noticed, right?

The red rounds flew between the two parties. More than once, Zaria found herself ducking almost too soon or almost too late as the blaster fire rushed as her. She returned shot for shot as best she could. These mercenaries had planned well but her squad was moving in as a unit better. The mercs were not exactly used to working together as the members of the Corps were. One of the first rules in the academy that Zaria had learned: you’re nothing without your squad. They become your lifeline when things become more difficult and effective group strategy often overcomes numbers.

The opposing torrent of shots had diminished to a slackened revolt and with a few orders yelled above the sound of the firefight, as signals might go ignored in the midst or battle, Skarr had them moving up. She moved to the now singed and cracked crates ahead of the ones she had been covering behind; watching as the rest of the squad did the same, all except for Teviny.  Skarr had the more experienced troopers moving in on the mercs, ducking and by some force she couldn’t understand avoiding fire all the while diminishing their opposition with precise and calculated movements. The girl who had treated her arm was leaning over Teviny as the rest of the recruits watched with awe as the older bunch carved through the mercenaries. None dared to fire for fear of hitting someone other than the enemy fighters. Her eyes watched Skarr’s movements carefully moving back and forth between her commanding officer and the other Troopers with the same awe as the other newer members of the Corps.

The opposing fire stopped almost abruptly and Zaria found herself blessing all good things for the moment to slow her heart rate, to get her mind together out of its danger muddled half-thoughts. Skarr moved quickly back toward where the rookies where slowly shuffling to a stand.

“What’s wrong with the kid?” Asked one of Troopers, Zaria still had not gotten a name for this one, as Skarr moved to ask the same thing of Kait. As most of the younger members of Eclipse and Skarr grouped to look in on Teviny she moved to stand away from them, joining the seasoned soldiers as they kept a careful watch on the surroundings. It wasn’t that she thought herself superior to the other rookies.  Zaria felt something more like detachment. The thought of another trooper being injured made her skin prickle with goosebumps but this was her first mission and though she was working with them, it felt as though she wasn’t a part of her Squad yet. It should come in time. She looked up as her commanding officer helped Teviny up to a sitting position with help from the Medic. Whatever Kait had done had worked or maybe it had not been as serious as it had seemed, though the marks on the chest plate of his suit made Zaria feel otherwise. The trooper she now identified as Anival gave Teviny a look she couldn’t place, between relief and anger before he said:

“For the record, Rookies, when Skarr says jump…” He paused to look around at each of them, even looking over to where Zaria stood feeling more like an intruder than anything, “Don’t even pause to ask how high. Just move.”

An amused and relieved look came over Skarr as Anival moved gruffly away from the staring group of inexperienced soldiers. Zaria felt an amused smile play at her lips knowing that though what the man said was obvious, it was certainly easier said than done. Her hands were shaking again.

“I couldn’t have said it better myself.” Skarr said. “Keep your eyes peeled. We might’ve walked into something real nasty back there if it wasn’t for careful observation on Anival’s part, got it? We’ve gotta expect more of what we just saw. Oh, and Teviny? Try to keep yourself up this time.” The last bit was more teasing and lightened the mood before the squad set out again. This time they were feeling a bit more confident if nothing else. The room awaited them and hopefully within it someone who could give them some answers.

It had been a long time since Drex had engaged in live combat, he wasn't even sure if he could confirm a clean kill, his firing had been untamed, even panicked. Yet the excitement was there, that same old thrill of ducking bullets and returning to sender, the screech of blaster fire and the muffled call of his superiors orders. It was a befuddling concept that anyone would enjoy this line of work, but then he was also a living contradiction to that quickly dismissed thought.

Drexhel himself lingered at the back of the pack making his own mental notes and observations, Skarr conducting checks over the individuals of the squad. This was either compassion for the men and women he stood beside or a professionalism that had no doubt earned him his position. The others, Drex was yet to learn their names, something he would need to remedy soon, stood calm and ready. Some with the presence of having seen more than a few men die some although new to the field certainly didn't act like it. The commotion over the downed trooper was fading as it appeared to be armor deep and nothing more, the soldier stood, slightly nervy but both standing and alive.

“Bernadette, hows that arm?” The attention of Skarr had shifted as he geared himself to give the forward orders.

The young woman calmly replied “it's just fine sir” if she was in pain it was well concealed.

Skarr gave a quick precise nod before turning on heel “We've got work to do, lets move on”.

Two rushed forward to take the lead along side Skarr, followed by one of the more enthusiastic new recruits and Drex himself, The remaining four formed a strong rear defence. They passed over the heavily scorched and now lifeless adversaries with a group mentality of pride before meeting with a wide darkened corridor, visibility only a little hindered and plenty more storage crates conveniently placed as ideal cover. The walking seemed endless, much of the scenery was strangely similar, even the worn out patches of the walls left a feeling of repetition in the task at hand.

A sudden swooshing cut the tension as a door opened to Drexhels right, before he could grasp his blaster two sets of strong fingers engaged the upper portion of his chest plate dragging him into what seemed to be a storage closet. His back collided hard with the back wall of the room as a merc advanced brandishing his menacing serrated blade. Drex grabbed the wielding hand and forced his weight to reverse his position. Quickly he threw his head forward butting his opponent off balance, seizing opportunity he gripped on the wrist of the man and forced his own weapon with a dull punch into the mercs chest. The man shook as Drex twisted the blade, the grinding and crunching as the ribs were torn apart made his mind go numb. As he let go the man fell limp to the floor, Drex retreated from the room in minor shock to meet the exited trooper previously standing beside him.

“Zippy, is Drex still standing?” The call came from the leading authority Skarr as he and the front men fell back.

“Yeah I think so, looks a little shaken but he's fine” Zippy took a step back as Drex entered the corridor.

Skarr gave a sharp nudge of his head in the direction of Drex “ok to keep going?”.

Drex replied with no more than a nod, his helmet covered what would have been an ash coloured face, he was not adverse to killing, but nor did he like it at least not in that capacity. With a few deep breaths he rejoined the squad in the careful navigation  of the corridor, a sense of caution seemed to have spread as eyes scanned surroundings with the utmost caution.

As they approached the door of there targeted room there was the audible sound of the arc who'd gone ahead roughing up his captive, as the door opened the future victim of the interrogation was sliding down the wall beaten with a fresh trickle of blood running from the corner of his mouth.

Skarr made his voice heard as he approached the arc “at ease Lancer”.

The corners of his mouth twitched with a smirk as he replied “hope you don't mind that I got started without you”.

“Take a breather this might take a few” said Skarr as he turned to the squad who positioned themselves around the room.

The captive looked desperately around for an escape to find none, only the armed squad watching for him to make the mistake of trying.
Hold your heart in your sleeve, after all you never know when you might get shot in the chest.

Anival bent down to retrieves his helmet; the ambush had failed miserably, and Eclipse lives to nearly die another die. A small frown escaped Anival’s composure. His helmet was dirty. It had been missed completely. He sighed and closed his eyes.

        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The squad surrounded the captured man, Anival walked out towards the hall.
Anival sighed and donned his helmet, he toyed with the setting, he was bored, and he would much rather be outside pretending to guard the door, than be inside watching the two men pry information from the third.
Umbra also walked out, Aneshi in the lead. It was funny, how the natural leader always came out in moments of stress. Still it was probably only a hunch, but it seemed to Anival that Aneshi had won respect in umbra, at least in small click.  Anival continued to toy with his PoV, and stopped. There were six heat signatures registering in his HUD. He switched his comm to a pre-set channel in Umbra’s comms. Thank you for thinking ahead Skarr
“Alright you three listen good, bring those three crates over here, and try to keep it silent.”
“why do we have-“
“Just do it! Any more comments will be taken as treason and I will carry out the executions right here!”
They didn’t argue, Umbra moved silently to do as they were told. Next Anival walked into the room, but not before checking his HUD again, he estimated they had two minutes.
“Zippy, you, and ugh- you” Anival had yet to remember the troopers name.
“Zaria”
“Drex”
Anival ignored their comment, he couldn’t waste more time.
“Come with me.” to Skarr he turned and said. “We’ve got reinforcements”
Skarr nodded and waved his hand, he knew Anival didn’t want the man to know his plan had failed. The four troopers walked out, they closed the door behind them, and were greeted by umbra, and they had set a nice barricade for them, from what Anival could see it would hold up easily against the incoming opposition. Anival bent down low, and motioned for everyone to do the same.
“Turn on your infrared, and look around, then turn it back off, I noticed these guys by chance, I think the man inside is probably a distraction. I will keep my infrared on and tell you when to come out of hiding and start this show. We need to give Skarr time.”
The squad nodded, and he returned the nod. They were ready, Skarr would have more than enough time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Aneshi~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Aneshi walked out into the corridor, Umbra behind him, he guessed they all wanted to learn at the same time. He noticed Anival leaning against the wall, he seemed to be asleep. Suddenly he jerked and started talking to them. Aneshi nodded, but someone tried to ask a question.

“Just do it! Any more comments will be taken as treason and I will carry out the executions right here!”

Aneshi wondered if he was serious. Odds were he was, he ran to do as they were told. He ran nudging each crate, all but one were heavy, he motioned for help and they started to push, someone must have done something, because the crate opened and out came what seemed to be parts of a prefab shelter. They quickly ran about to set up a barricade.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~Kiat~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kiat noticed Aneshi walking towards the hall, she looked around and decided to fallow, he was probably up to something, and even though she didn’t care much for the man, she didn’t want him to get her into some sort of trouble, so she tagged along, she got outside and stopped abruptly. Aneshi had gone out to the hall to talk to Anival. Probably kissing arse
She was about to say something when Anival spoke, she frowned and started to ask why, but held her tongue; she at least had the good sense to do so, because Edgter hadn’t. He asked and got a curt reply.
“Just do it! Any more comments will be taken as treason and I will carry out the executions right here!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Edgter~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Edgter couldn’t stomach what was about to happen, he walked outside, looking at his feet the whole time, and nearly ran into Kiat, he was puzzled, the scene in the room completely forgotten. Why was the rest of Umbra out in the hall? He was going to ask  when Anival jumped up and started to bark orders. Edgter’s nature got the better of him and he asked.
“why do we have-“ he was cut short.

“Just do it! Any more comments will be taken as treason and I will carry out the executions right here!”

Edgter frowned, and fallowed Umbra.

Why does he always pick on me? Since I got here he has been picking on me. I’m going to talk to Skarr about that. That idiot will treat me with some respect.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Umbra~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The mind state of each individual in umbra was to say the least, edgy, each of them had witnessed some of the early battles, but they had been quick paced, and fast. They had never been pinned down under fire. The chance of survival for each of the three individuals was slim.  And that, gave them strength, it was firewood to their determination.
~~~~~~~~~~~~Anival~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Anival stared at the income targets, the first two were nearly there, four more feet and they would be dead, and the remaining four would know that, yet another ambush had failed. Anival smiled, luck was on their side, what were the odds that toying with a HUD would save your life. One foot. Anival blanked his mind, and detached himself from his body, he was now a machine, machines didn’t feel remorse, and neither would he. It was time to kill and not second guess your-self. He gave the signal, and switched PoV. Eclipse engaged in yet another skirmish.

Skarr/Kait

The prisoner was a haggard looking man. He had been roughed up by Lancer already. Skarr smiled slightly under his helmet and looked back toward the door where the rest of Eclipse had filtered out of. They had gone to battle, leaving Skarr and Lancer behind. The squad leader had wanted to go with them, but this was the objective and it had to be done. Lancer was standing back, stock still, watching the prisoner casually.

“Well, Lancer, since you’ve already established yourself as the bad guy you rough him up while I play nice guy,” Skarr said over the comm, not wanting the prisoner to hear.

“You were always more suited for that role anyway,” Lancer commented. He was all business now. The last vestige of arrogance had melted away revealing the Lancer that got things done. The one that was cold and calculating. The man who could kill without a thought. Skarr was glad that the ARC trooper was on their side. Without him, they may not have achieved some of the crushing victories that had been experienced by the Vast Empire.

Skarr sighed over the comm, “ Keep an ear on what’s going on with Eclipse. They come first before this guy. If anything untoward happens let me know. I want this nerf herder to know I have a face.” There was no response from Lancer, but Skarr knew that the ARC trooper would comply for Skarr’s sake. The man was not completely uncaring. Skarr reached up to his helmet and popped the seal. His helmet came off, revealing the face beneath. The prisoner stared at him, probably trying to memorize features in case he escaped.

The squad leader smiled at the man. “Hello, my name is Norith. May I ask what your name is?” The prisoner looked up at him with contempt evident on his face. He clearly did not care to tell. Frankly, Skarr did not want to know either. That would just make the prisoner more human to him. He did not want to sympathize with the man, but for this purpose he had to.

“That’s alright, you don’t have to tell me. I can just address you as prisoner. And Lancer here doesn’t need to know your name to be able to kick your ass,” Skarr admitted. To punctuate the point, Lancer threw a punch across the man’s face. He reeled back, panting.

The ARC trooper chuckled and joined the conversation, “That is true. And now you also see what happens when you defy us.” The prisoner spat at Lancer. It hit the ARC’s breastplate, but other than that, he did not react. The room was silent as the man waited for some type of reaction. Skarr just sat there, watching. Lancer wasn’t going to be provoked. “Onto the next question then.”

***

Kait ducked down as a blaster bolt came her way. The battle outside of the small room was becoming a fierce affair. She realized that Umbra was quickly having to adapt to combat. It never came to her mind that her first full blown mission would be completely full of combat. Kait was also surprised that no one was getting hurt too much. Each trooper had suffered glancing shots to their armor, but nothing had gone through. Sometime during the battle, the young woman had ended up next to Edgter. Let’s hope his ego doesn’t attract lasers.

Aneshi was somewhere nearby Anival. It was a nice setup Kaitlynn believed. Anival had taken the reins of Eclipse while Skarr was getting his information, and Aneshi had volunteered himself to lead Umbra. It did not bother Kait, that Aneshi had taken the lead. She had decided she was not fit for leadership anyway. The women was much more devastating as an asset on the field. And as long as Edgter did not have the lead, Kait could count that as a victory.

Another merc came into Kait’s line of sight and she fired. There would be no victory for these Blanchards today. Eclipse and Umbra would win this battle and the next. She felt that with a cruel certainty as another merc fell to her wrath.

***

The prisoner bent over as another punch connected with his gut. Skarr had needled him with questions and the man had answered few of them. So Skarr decided to take a more conversational route. “How does one become a mercenary?”

It seemed to be a harmless question, so the man answered, “I used to be a soldier like you, then I took a blaster bolt to the knee.” Skarr could not help but smile, and Lancer looked like he was laughing. It was an old joke, but one that still made people laugh nonetheless.

“Now do you want to tell us who’s running the show here?” Skarr asked. The prisoner stopped chuckling and stared.

“You have to promise to let me go,” the prisoner said, “I have to run far away if I want to stay alive, but I think you have him occupied.” Skarr thought for a second. He knew there was only one way that this could end. It was not good and honorable, but the merc had given up all honor when he accepted money to fight for a cause.

“I promise to let you go.” Skarr said.

The prisoner licked his lips nervously, “Commander Fikk.” The name rang a bell in Skarr’s head. He had read about the man while reviewing the file for the previous operations on Anteevy.

“And what is his game?” Skarr questioned.

“He wants revenge. He’s creating weapons to destroy the Vast Empire with.” The prisoner easily admitted all of this. Skarr was not sure what motivated him to. Perhaps it was the thought of being free after the interrogation. Unnoticed by the prisoner, Lancer had moved behind him.

Skarr looked on the prisoner with a look of concern, “Anything else you have to tell us?” The man shook his head in a quick negative. Lancer had drawn his pistol and with it he shot the man in the back of the head. The prisoner slumped forward. A quick death was all Skarr could give him. He stood slowly, putting his helmet back in place and sealing it.

He clicked on his comm, “Havock, this is Skarr. We have the information needed. Get the others on comm.” When Brightstar, Joamer, and Garryll were all present on their channels Skarr spoke. “The leader of the base is Commander Fikk. He’s using the place as some sort of weapons factory to use against the VE. From what I’ve seen of the crates outside, I think they’re going completely experimental. Just be careful.”

Garryll spoke next, “Alright Skarr, get Eclipse to the command center of the base. I want everyone in charge either captured or killed. Your choice.” The comm clicked off. Skarr took a deep breath. It was time to get down to business.

“The battle’s still going on outside, Skarr. And you know, if I was out there, it would have been over.” Lancer had returned to his old self, as they left the smoking corpse behind them.

OOC:
Well, we have the next objective. Eclipse has to make it's way down to the bottom level. We're aiming to capture or kill all the leaders, but I'll let you guys know when we get there. For now, we make our way down the separate levels of the base. Expect heavy resistance along with another surprise. The Blanchards are going to start sending out mercs wielding experimental weapons.

“Oh for f” Drexhels yelling was suddenly cut short by a bolt whistling past his head.

They where pinned, out numbered, out anything the situation had to offer,  at least three men to their one and a merc springing up like a fresh weed with every man Eclipse managed to gun down. The dull environment was no more, illuminated in glorious red as the over head stream of blaster fire endlessly protruded from the enemy ranks. The storage crates used for cover where steadily chipping away, the walls  where streaked with scorch marks, they're not even trying to hit us they're just keeping us down!.

Anival Velasquez had taken the fore ground, his ferocity, accurately firing blind or from the hip had probably cut down more opposition than a random pick of two other troopers. Drex began to wonder what was motivating him, certainly not survival judging by the number of blackened grazes on his armor. Bernadette held a cavalier composure, in the moments she broke cover her eye was aligned with her rifle picking off the first unlucky man or woman to meet her sight. Zippy had adapted a peekaboo strategy with his blaster in one hand and a grenade in the other obviously picking his moment to chuck the thing.

Drex shook his head, snapping out of his daze why am I watching when I should be shooting! he spun from his perch onto one knee letting off a few bursts into the crowd, it was at this point harder to miss a target. The mercs where still in power, they had the squad fighting in desperation, Umbra as a collective where doing their fair part but the masses they fought where pressing forward, overwhelming in numbers alone.

“Arrg!” a yell of pain came from Drex as his shoulder took a flesh wound, it stung but he was not going to be held back by it, more to his cause it angered him.

“Where the frak is” his question stopped mid flow as Skarr and Lancer came hurdling through the carnage to meet Anival at the lead.

The two led with quick and precise marksmanship, the enemy seeing the addition, halted their press, in caution they took cover. This gave the squad a short but valuable breather to reposition and evaluate, the favour was on their side now, still out numbered but with a vastly improved fighting chance.

They fell back one step at a time, the overwhelming fire power no longer matched up to the high performance blaster wielding of the Eclipse and ARC team. What little order prevailed within enemy ranks was break, fast, it was only a matter of time before they were taken down to the last. Drexhels arm stung, it weighed on his mind as he marched forward forcing his two handed hold on his weapon, he was landing maiming shots at best with his lazy demeanour. The squad in its entirety where doing the job, the mercs where tripping over themselves and some where breaking off to flee.

“We've got em now push em!” the forward driving call of Skarr came from the front of the pack.

It was now more of a firing line for the enemies trapped in the scattering mess.

Lancer was laughing menacingly, almost like he enjoyed it “shoot from the outside, we don't want stragglers!”.

Almost as quickly as the chaos had ensued the opposition was broken, the dead littered the floor, Drexhel was the only one to sustain an injury others where scuffed and grazed with no real damage other than armor integrity. Drex took heavy breaths is it over? there was no more firing, only a dead silence anticipating the immersion into new battle, but the silence remained.

“Fall in!” Skarr was still slowly lowering his rifle as he turned to meet the gathering squad “Kait, take a look at Drexhels arm, we cannot afford to be held back right now”.
Drexhel hopped to attention “Sir it's only” he stopped by the sight Skarrs raised hand.

“Better safe than sorry” as the SL dropped his hand Drex thought oh sweet irony you are a cruel bitch

“We have new orders troops, I'm not going to lie this one is going to be hell.” the SL had taken off his helmet to address his squad, with what looked like concern spread across his face.

He opened his mouth to continue to find Anival pushing him backwards as the flare end of a rocket whizzed past them.

“RPG! Hit the deck!” the call came from Zippy second to notice the retaliation of three men, two with blasters, one holding the tube dispensing explosives.

The scatter commenced as the roaring boom echoed through the halls, only Lancer stood composed, readying his rifle to end the battle before it began. A quick a well placed bolt hit the RPG wielder square in the chest, followed by the squads barrage of red laying waste to the other two.

Drex chuckled slightly at this as he formed up with the unscathed squad that reeked of desperation.

“As I was saying” said Skarr clearing his throat “We have the information we needed, which means we're now going down to the lower levels of this base, we're going after the people running this joint, it's not going to be easy and resistance will be heavy, take a few moments to prepare then we move, understood?”.

Drex knew this one was going to be a ride he wouldn't forget but he still he joined the synchronised yes sir with vigour.
Hold your heart in your sleeve, after all you never know when you might get shot in the chest.

Understanding is a limitation, Knowledge is a godsend, my friend you are staring into the eyes of madness.

Adrenaline ran through her and she realized that the longer she fought the less discomfort she felt. At first she had found her shoulders cramping from tension, her arm burning with the pain from the blaster fire. Now she felt nothing but a dull ache at her arm and the almost comforting warmth of her inner uniform.  Skarr had asked her about her arm at some point and with a slight shrug she had told him that she was fine. At the time, it had been true.

Zaria found that she was losing herself in the battle. When Anival had called the bunch of them out, leaving Skarr and the arrogant trooper with the captured man, she had not questioned him. He was obviously taking charge as Skarr was occupied with Lancel and the man they had already battered up. Zaria thought that she would have been unnerved by them purposely hurting someone, as her squad leader and the arrogant trooper were obviously doing, but the battle came first. Her mind hadn’t even roamed to that thought. As she tended to, she did as was expected of her. She did not question Anival’s orders; however, she was surprised when Edgter did. Perhaps she was taking her role as a Stormtrooper too much to heart. Time might change that as well.

They had gone into the battle with the closest thing to confidence that soldiers as inexperienced as themselves could. But now, Zaria didn’t know about the rest of them, she wasn’t so sure. They were definitely outnumbered and though she could shoot relatively well, the mercenaries seemed to be keeping them at bay. It felt like a game, she realized.

The bright red of the blaster fire outlined the group. She stepped out from behind the crates and shot a total of nine shots; six rung true she was sure. Zaria quickly ducked behind the crates again. Black as pitch eyes wandered over the group as she looked out from behind the crates to select targets again. The deathly crimson of blaster fire whizzed toward her.  It collided with the edge of her helmet, not entering but certainly snapping her head backwards, she was dazed as she sat down behind the crates. She shook her head and brushed it off as best she could though she had a difficult time focusing now; then, she breathed deep and stepped out to shoot again, this time her aim was not as true though. She shot five times and only twice did she actually make the shot.

She sat leaning against the crates taking in deep breaths and trying to clear the fogginess surrounding her mind. In the midst of blaster fire she heard a yell. It was that guy, Drexel, who had arrived late, much like her. The sound made her half turn to look before she realized the foolishness of such an action. Zaria looked around at the other members of the group, cradling her blaster rifle in her lap, as she noticed that the crates that had been sheltering them up to now were scarred and chipped from the firefight.. There was little left of them, she realized.
She glanced over at Drexel, he seemed fine though he was favoring one of his arms to the other. Well, that’s two of us. She managed a little chuckle at the irony though she realized that now was not the time. Remembering training she tried to focus her mind thinking of a bull’s eye being hit directly in the center.

She took her rifle back into her hands and moved out again to fire just in time to see Skarr and Lancel moving to take the lead with Anival. She moved as quickly as her foggy mind would allow following the directions that the two other men issued. Zaria wondered whether or not she would someday lead as easily as they did, giggling as the fog in her mind started clearing. Skarr’s order to fall in brought her out of her daze and she followed order just as the rest of the squad, moving closer to the rest of the group.

The close contact with them made her realize just how many of them she didn’t know. It was odd and interesting or maybe it was just the injury to her head which though invisible to the rest, except for the scar on her armor, was scrambling her thoughts.  She did not listen in to what they were saying as she removed her helmet, thankful for a bit of air outside her armor. Her eyes lost focus and she sat down a few feet from the rest of the group finding solace in the fact that they did not notice. Perhaps it was good that they had yet to integrate her enough to notice all these things. The yell to hit the deck was delayed to her and she looked up just in time to see Lancel shoot the mercenary with the RPG and the rest of the squad follow suit with the other two mercenaries.

“We have the information we needed, which means we're now going down to the lower levels of this base, we're going after the people running this joint, it's not going to be easy and resistance will be heavy, take a few moments to prepare then we move, understood?” Zaria heard Skarr say, she stood slowly noting that her vision darkened a bit at the edges when she did.

The redhead was certainly thankful for the moment to pause and take a breather. She watched Eclipse gather themselves up. They checked their supplies, they rechecked their weapons, and they looked around with a general feeling of unease.  She leaned her back against the warm metal wall of the base feeling something almost comforting about it before doing the same as the rest of the squad did with her own supplies and weapons.  The word to move on came, she replaced her helmet on her head and she took her rifle moving on with the rest of the squad.

The dull metal of the walls seemed to echo every sound back to her as they moved slowly through the base, further down. Further from safety. She shuddered and bumped into Drexhel, whom she was standing next to near the center of the group, as they moved on waiting for something more to happen. Now that the adrenaline had grown low in her system she began to feel the throbbing pain of her injured arm. Her helmet felt constricting.

Zaria looked around noting that they had wandered into what she thought looked like some sort of communications sector of the base. The once completely metal walls were sometimes graced by doors with sections of glass. This glass looked into rooms with strange machines, computers, paperwork on walls. It made her unnerved. It seemed almost too quiet…as though they were laying in wait for Eclipse to get far enough that a retreat would be almost impossible.

Zippy/Aneshi

Zippy was ready to go. They were finally going to take down the scum running this place and he knew as well as the rest of the squad that they were going in strong. Zippy kept pondering to himself of what may happen when they go into the lower levels. More then likely they would find something they didn't want to find out. Either way, Zippy was ready to go. His blaster was full of ammo, and his focus was on the task at hand and there was nothing else he needed besides his team at his back. He then turned his attention over to Aneshi, who was prepping his gun and making sure his armor was set and ready to go. He was proud of the young troopers strong will and fierce fighting skills. Taking him under his wing was something he was proud of and took great pride in it. Not only proving to himself that he could do it, but also proving to his squad that he was a valuable trooper.

"So Aneshi, how are you liking the squad huh? I couldn't be more proud of you and the rest of Umbra. You guys have really shown, not only me, but the whole squad what courage is. You came into this squad, assigned to a dangerous mission, and have proven your worth. How does it feel?" Zippy said with pride.

"Well sir, it feels great. From the first time I met all of you, I knew I was home. I felt something I haven't felt since I was a little boy, and it's a great feeling. You all have made me and the rest of Umbra feel right at home and we are truly grateful. We're glad to prove ourselves in combat to all of you as well."

***

Aneshi felt great. He got an extremely grateful compliment from Zippy and he couldn't be happier. He was so excited knowing that he was beyond proving himself to his new squad. Knowing that he had gotten such praise from Zippy meant a lot to him and he wasn't going to stop now. Aneshi continued to ready his gear, checking over his rifle, fixing his armor, etc. Everything was ready to go. Seeing that everyone else was also getting there gear ready, Aneshi took a second to think over his mission.

He thought about the start of the day. Meeting his new squad, proving that he belonged there. It was a great feeling to even thin back on. Just as he thought about these few thoughts, the squad got orders to move out.

***

Zippy and the squad began to move towards the lower levels of the complex. He was on edge, like they all were. Looking around every corner, not sure what to expect, the squad pushed on. As they continued into the depths of the facility, enemy resistance became obvious.

"Get behind cover! Now! Skarr yelled out. RPG's coming in!"

The squad all took cover behind whatever they could find. Spread out, they weren't at as big of a risk of being hit by one of the rockets. This was what they came here for. To figure out who was behind this. Zippy knew like the rest of the squad, they weren't leaving.

The squad continued walking through the seemingly endless hall. Their nerves were making them jumpy, even the more seasoned soldiers seemed unnerved by the simple… quiet of this section of the base. They moved on pointing blasters into dark rooms where the doors were opened. They were reaching the center of the long hallway. After all of the action they had experienced throughout the relatively little time they had been on this base this lack of, well, anything was making them more worried. By the time they reached the center of the hall most of the rookies were almost wishing for the enemy. It would certainly beat this uncertainty. Edgter was the only exception; as far as he was concerned no enemy was the best enemy.

Zaria was definitely feeling what had been a minor distraction of pain reach a much more conscious section of her mind. The nerves on her arm seemed to be on fire. To make matters worse, her head felt light and heavy and….. They walked past another open door; she and Drexel aimed readily at the room, it was on the side they were in charge of safe keeping. The room was completely bare but there were shadows created by the light coming from the hall. Maybe it was just the head trauma but Zaria found herself chuckling as she noted the way the light flickered in the room as the troopers passed by. Like a candle, light was fleeted and returned creating shapeless objects on the walls with the pass of Eclipse by the doors. But…that thing… Zaria stared past her pointing blaster.

“Skarr…” Drexhel hissed this harshly as he stopped to stare into the shady lighting in room.

“What the…” Zaria also stopped and stared at what she saw. There was a huge box of some sort in the center of the completely bare room. It was perfectly centered, perfectly placed. It was almost as tall as any one of the male troopers and from it emanated a soft warm….glow? No, that seemed like the wrong word... It was covered in a very shiny metallic skin; to Zaria it looked like a gift, wrapped for the holidays. It lay tauntingly mysterious, wanting to be opened. Yet, there was nothing exciting and lighthearted here for the group. Skarr moved quickly from where he was at the ahead of the group, making sure to give orders for them to keep a look out while he went to investigate.

“Drexhel, Bernadette I didn’t order anyone to stop this is…” He stopped to stare at the thing as well. The troopers closer to the trio half turned to stare into the room before Skarr yelled his orders for them to concentrate on their own positions. “It hasn’t done anything has It? “ He asked them more quietly.
As if hearing It’s cue the alien thing began to pulse.  It had suddenly developed a heart she thought and Zaria felt it matching her own slowly quickening heart. Mercenaries she could deal with but what was THIS?  Something in the uniquely human consciousness they had made them find the pulse almost…appealing. It felt living. Aneshi began to walk closer, he bumped into Skarr and it was this that brought the muscular commanding officer out of the daze that this thing had created.

“Stop! Everyone move back!” He yelled to them breaking them from their own hypnosis-like states. They moved away from it, blasters at the ready once more.  They weren’t more than five feet from the door when the blast happened. Zaria saw bright colored lights like so many beautiful ornaments upon the holiday tree. The cacophony of light and sound that ensued would have blinded them, it would have made them deaf had if not been for the helmets they wore and the distance they had made in response to Skarr’s orders; however, it did its job. Seconds after the blast the sheer power of it had them lying on the floor, seconds after that the light and sound disoriented them enough to have them stumbling around for handhold in the walls and in each other.

“Eclipse, Umbra to me.” The yell seemed to come from another plane altogether as Zaria registered it. Her head had been throbbing before. Now she felt that it would explode and at the edges of her vision she saw an outline the color of the holly her mother had use to cheer the dreary house when she had been a child. Skarr repeated himself and she raised herself on to trembling knees and with her eyes closed she moved closer to the voice she now recognized as her commanding officer’s.

The rest of the groups of Troopers stumbled and crawled their way to the sound of the voice. That thing had been nothing less than effective but they were in enemy territory and had little time to recover, Skarr knew this and acted as quickly as he could fighting off the effects of the damn thing as best he could. Somehow they managed to gather around him.

They paused there, the seasoned soldiers looking older, weary beneath their helmets; the rookies looking younger and more vulnerable under their own. The hall around them was beginning to return. Slowly but surely it was. Zaria leaned against the wall nearest to Skarr, had she been able to she might have reached out and touched him but she couldn’t, Zaria saw her vision darken and a shudder ran through her. Her hands tightened and it was only then that she realized her blaster was still in her hands. Well, she could thank her training for that at least. Skarr looked around at them, his and the other more seasoned soldiers heads’ seemed to have cleared much faster. It might be the fact that they had already been exposed to explosives in the past.

He had just begun to arrange them in a dazed formation when the first blaster fire began. This fire was not the typical red though. He yelled at them to move into the nearest rooms available and they moved, though maybe not as quickly as they should have. Zaria whispered a prayer to an unnamed deity for strength as she leaned against the wall in a room she barely remembered entering. It seemed like these Mercenaries where smarter and more organized that they had all thought…or maybe they just had bigger guns.

The blast had completely dazed each member of Eclipse. Skarr was trying to rally them as the blaster fire began. This is pissing me off. Eclipse had been only able to move down a few levels of the base. The mercenaries were a constant problem. They kept popping out of nowhere, weapons blazing. So far, Skarr had only seen some minor prototypes. Most of the prototype weapons he had come across were blasters trying to maximize the rate or power of fire using some fairly different materials than Tibanna gas.

Now he noticed some new things as this new wave of fire came upon them. The mercs were wearing something different. Norith’s mind ran through all the possibilities until it settled on exo-suits. It was not a completely impossible idea. Many arms and armor companies had been developing exo-suits. All of them were prototypes and usually not very successful against blaster fire. The weapons they carried were different too. They certainly did not look like any blaster Skarr was used to seeing. He helped Bernadette to her feet as she had fallen once the blaster fire had begun. She muttered a quick thanks over the comm as she began firing once again.

Anival had been one of the first to recover and he had knocked over storage crates to block the fire. Eclipse used the crates as cover once again as the first exo-suited mercenary stepped forward. He raised his gun, although it looked more like a giant cannon. The projectile that came out was much like a firework, it was a multi-colored stream of light, dripping heat and plasma. The smell it left behind was acrid as it exploded on the wall behind Eclipse. When Skarr looked back to the wall, the impact point was completely disintegrated.

“Concentrate all fire on that nerf herder!” Skarr ordered. His squad acknowledged the order with a quick wave of their weapons to the mercenary in the lead. A hail of fire left the Eclipse troopers’ blasters that left the exo-suit and the man a smoking heap on the ground. Now the squad’s attention was brought back to the other mercs firing onto them. Lancer produced a thermal det from somewhere on his belt.

“Want to show them some fun, Norith?” the ARC trooper asked.

“Aren’t you going to give them spiked champagne first? I thought that was your MO,” Skarr retorted.

“Oh fu-” Lancer had begun as he threw the detonator towards the mercs. It exploded with such brilliance that Skarr’s helmet barely filtered out all of the light from it. With that last bang, there was silence again. Zippy stood slowly, and took recon position. He edged forward scanning the mayhem at the end of the hall.

“It’s clear. Shit!” Skarr seen Zippy’s blaster flare up once more. “Okay, now it’s clear.” Skarr chuckled slowly as he helped Lancer to his feet.

Lancer clapped the squad leader’s shoulder affectionately, “It’s only you that I give spiked champagne to.”

“That wasn’t funny. And don’t remind me of that party again.” Skarr said. He walked over to where Zippy was standing guard and bent over the slagged man carrying the cannon. He carefully picked up the large weapon, examining it. It was certainly something he had never seen. Skarr scanned it using his helmet, taking note of the model number: Prototype 2012. The squad leader had Drexhel drag a storage crate over and Skarr carefully lowered the weapon inside. It would not do to let another merc find it again.

“Eclipse, move out,” Skarr ordered. The squad began making it’s way further and deeper into the base.

The blaster fire had more than dazed her. The sounds and colors of it had overpowered her senses. Her head had swum and her knees slackened. There was a whirl and she couldn’t tell whether or not she was standing or sitting.  Zaria’s breath slowed as she remembered the mind clearing exercises from Training trying to focus enough to help. When next she opened her eyes she didn’t waste time evaluating her state at mind. She took up her blaster and began aiming, firing as quickly as she could. For now it didn’t matter whether or not she actually hit what she aimed at. She just needed to have something to do or she might close her eyes and…

Skarr helped her up and Zaria realized that she was needed. A squad, a team, needed to work together and she needed to pull her own weigth right now. Her pale lips managed a quick thanks that didn’t really register in her mind as she began to aim and fire as the opposing camp.  Zaria made a mental note to set Kait aside and ask her for something to stop her head from throbbing before they made another encounter. If she ever wanted to succeed here she had to acknowledge her own weakness, fix it, and then continue.
When the suited mercenary shot Zaria, along with most of the squad, had ducked her arms shielding her head instinctively even with the helmet.

She followed Skarr’s gaze and her’s widened when she realized that the sections that had been shot out had not exploded violently as she assumed it would. It was simply…gone. Skarr’s orders resounded in her ears even as she shot again and again into the opposing crowd, this time aiming at the one man who was the biggest threat. The adrenaline had returned to her and with it her mind had cleared all the more, her injuries fading into the back of her mind once again. The detonator caught her by surprise, momentarily blinding her in the midst of firing her blaster. Thankfully she had learned to handle it well and she fired straight into the area she had been aiming.

Zaria relaxed her hold on the blaster as Zippy took it onto himself to see if everything was clear. Her shoulders relaxed for a moment and then became twice as tense when she heard Zippy curse. Auburn waves stuck to her temples and she realized that she had been exerting more than she had thought.  While Skarr hid the deadly blaster, Zaria made her way over to a slightly shaky Kait. She was taking note of a everyone to see if they were injured. Zaria switched into a private conversation with Kait before she began speaking, there was no use worrying anyone else about her.

“Do you have anything in that magical pack of yours for me?” Zaria asker Kait as lighthearted as she could.

“Why? What’s the matter?” Kait immediately moved closer, motioning for Zaria to remove her helmet. Zaria shook her head.

“My head is swimming and my arm feels like it’s on fire. If you have anything for either I’d definitely owe you one.”

“No worries, Bernadette,” Said Kait,” It’s my job” With that she had Zaria remove her helmet and take a pair of pills. “That should help with the pain.  The dizziness is most likely the result of the pain as well so it should do something for that too. Make sure to tell me if you need anything else, ok?”

There was something about the genuine concern and what seemed to be devotion that Kait had which took Zaria back and though Kait couldn’t see it she smiled. The thanks she gave to her related the smile to Kait though and with that the two of them found a new bond had been created.

Weird how that works though Zaria. The orders to move ahead came just as Zaria was double checking her supplies and making sure that her rifle was still in working order. Whatever Kait had given her was beginning to take effect, soothing her arm and grounding her thoughts as the pain diminished. She took her place, this time between Aneshi and Drexhel, as they began moving deeper into the base. The expectations she had set out for herself and which she knew were expected returned to her and she breathed in deep as she slipped into the persona she needed to be once more.

They moved quickly and found little resistance, suddenly, as though their opposition had not expected them to come this far. Zaria had to admit that the last attack had been very well thought out. If it had not been for Skarr’s leadership, and the little things that each of them contributed in observation, then Eclipse and the rest of the group may not have come this far. The first group they had found was made up of six mercenaries stationed in the center of one of the long halls nearing the end of the communications sector.

The mercenaries had been surprised to see them and their shoots had mirrored that. It took them little time to push the group down and, thankfully, there had been no surprises as far as what they were shooting or using to shoot at the Stormtrooper groups. The second group was not too far ahead but they were aware of their coming. The first group must have told them we got through Zaria’s nose wrinkled as she shot her rifle injuring one of the mercenaries in the knee. He fell to the ground and writhed in pain. She shot again, this time through his chest.  With a well-placed shot Anival finished the skirmish and they were able to move on, this time with more caution. If this group of mercenaries had been forewarned of their coming then the next few were probably also alarmed.

Zaria moved more quickly now that the pain had subsided. Her muscles were more relaxed. They had reached the end of another long hallway when the lights all went out. She heard one of the troopers mention something about other objectives, other squads being late. Skarr had them all arrange themselves at the ready for attack, just in case. A flicker of smaller lights, these dimmer, lit the darkness slowly illuminating to near the brightness of the lights that had been shining before.  Zaria looked around her rifle pointed to the end of the long hall they had just come though. There was silence except for the low hum of the new lights. From somewhere further ahead came a clatter that froze the rookies and which made Skarr look ahead more sharply.

“They must have something laid out for us, they have to be planning something, it-“ Edgter’s clearly beginning rant was stopped with a quick hand signal they had all learned in Training. One of the firsts; essentially, it meant shut the frak up. Then Skarr motioned for them to separate into two groups one would move forward slowly, the other would stay some fifteen feet behind the first in case of a need for retreat. Zaria moved as quietly as she could with the first group looking back only once at the troopers making up the second. Here goes nothing she thought with a grim smile.

The squad leader had decided to go forward with the first group. Lancer was staying behind in command of the second covering group. He had taken only four troopers with him: Anival, Bernadette, Edgter, and Drexhel. They paced forward slowly, in the barely illuminated darkness. There had been a clatter that had aroused Eclipse’s suspicion. Skarr realized that the power cutting off could have been part of a well laid trap. He certainly hoped not. He was sick of fighting already. Eclipse had encountered only heavy resistance through out the complex.

The five of them took the intersection very carefully. There was no guards that they could see. The intersection was completely empty. Skarr looked at each trooper in askance which they returned. He switched his helmet on infrared but there were no heat signatures. So that’s a no on cloaking.

“Well, what the hell?” Drexhel asked.

Skarr turned back to answer, but stopped. There was something. Something...beeping in the back of his head just barely audible. “Go back! Go back!” The squad dove out of the intersection as the bomb went off. Skarr hit the ground hard, his helmet knocking into the wall. He was stunned for a second as the second part of the squad came forward. Kait knelt down next to Skarr. The squad leader heard a voice that sounded oddly like his telling Kait to pay attention to the others.

“The others are fine, Skarr. I already checked them,” Kait assured him. He felt hands turning him over. “Skarr’s fine, just stunned.” As the squad leader was helped to his feet, he checked over himself. His armor was scratched up and dented, but it had held. When he looked back at the intersection, it was not covered in rubble.

Zippy was looking over the intersection. “It looks to be just shrapnel. That doesn’t seem smart. Why not blow the whole damn roof down?”

“It’s because we’re pretty much at the point of no return,” Lancer provided. “There are only a few hallways to the command center and this intersection would cause the nearby security command to collapse.”

Skarr glanced over in Lancer’s direction, “Security command?”

“Yeah, it handles all the cameras and defenses in the base,” Lancer said. “I’m actually surprised it was not an objective of ours to begin with.” Skarr nodded his head. He was thinking about assaulting the security room. It would certainly allow the squad an easier way to the command center. Perhaps the security room was why Eclipse had encountered so much resistance.

“Rest up for a second, Eclipse. Do an equipment check. We’re going to make a move on the security room,” Skarr ordered. He began checking his equipment. He was running a bit low on ammo, but what he had should hold until he acquired some more from the mercs. His belt was holding only one more thermal detonator and he decided to keep that. Both of his pistols were at full charge, thankfully. That could come in handy. He looked around noting, that the rest of the squad were doing just as he asked. Kait had already completed her check and was now asking each of the squad how they felt.

Skarr was glad to finally have a medic on the team. It would allow for some injury prevention on the field. He checked the rest of his equipment, it was almost time to move out.

OOC:
New sub-objective! Eclipse is moving to a nearby security room in an effort to hinder the mercs. We must take the room and once taken, we'll gather certain materials and destroy the rest. Expect minimal resistance as most of the mercs are in other parts of the base and the security room is well off the beaten track.

Zippy was eager to fight. He could feel himself slipping into the agitated state and it wasn't what he wanted. Things were going a little to quiet for his likings. Constant blaster fire, shrapnel flying every where, and orders to take cover was what he loved, although he always did take advantage of the piece and quiet when he got it. Eyein over his fellow troops as they all performed weapons checks, he could tell they were tired. Not weak, but he could see the energy levels of his squad start to descend rapidly. This would usually be the time he would crack his usual jokes at someone or something, but he just wasn't up for it. He turned his attention to Aneshi, attempting to clean his rifle. No matter where they were or what they were doing on this mission, he still came to admire the young trooper and all his movements. It was as if he was looking at himself in a mirror. Zippy then turned his attention to the task at hand as Skarr gave out new orders.

"Alright team. We're going to take the security room across from us. Now there shouldn't be to much resistance as they are attending to other major parts of the base so it should be relatively easy to take the room. Now lets be swift and get to it!" Skarr stated

Zippy and the rest of Eclipse got up and ready to take the room, with minimal damage to the security consoles there of coarse. Quickly and smoothly, Eclipse moved onward to the Security room. Taking point, Zippy quickly noticed four guards sitting at each terminal monitoring the security for the base. Signaling for the rest of the team to move up, Eclipse stormed into the room, blasters ready ad quickly took down the unsuspecting guards. Fortunately for them, with all the damage in the area of the base they were in, the security cameras took a rather, unfortunate beating and made the guards completely unaware of their movements.

"Alright team. everyone needs to dig up as much information on these mecs as you possibly can. Every bit of information is crucial for the VE and we can't let any information slip past us!" Skarr ordered out.

"Take a look at this sir, Zippy motioned for Skarr to come over to the terminal he took over. It seems that the security is rather advance and frankly, I've never seen anything like it. There are records on for payments on weapons, security recordings, account information. There is more info here then I've seen in my entire life. However one of the terminals has locked us out of a certain portion of data. Looks as though it may be the crucial data we are looking for."

"You mean what they have been up to and how they gained access to our network? Aneshi mentioned. We need to get that information quickly before more mercs show up to pay us a visit. It will only be a matter of time before they realize the security station isn't checking in."

"He's right. We need to move fast. Try everything you can team to get that data file opened up! We need to get that data! Drex, get the rest of that data downloaded as quickly as you can! Keep high alert for any passing scout parties!" Skarr said to the on edge team.

Zippy couldn't believe it. This was unlike anything he had ever seen There were privately owned bank accounts with more credits in them then he would ever get paid, and all security information they could possibly want, but the more crucial info had an automatic lockout program and they were strapped for time. Either way, they had to get the information, no matter the cost. Zippy began to mess with the wiring on the console. He figured he could rewire the system and reboot to a previous state, even a few minutes before they burst in and could access the info. He attempted to try this idea, but to no avail.

"Anyone else have any ideas? Zippy asked. Cause I sure as hell can't figure it out."

Anival couldn’t bring himself to look at one of the screens, he would be almost useless, he felt so useless, give him a targeting computer, and a set of lasers, and he could work the impossible, but put him in front of a computer and tell him to access a certain mainframe and he would fail. He remembered in spec training, how he had nearly failed and been sent back into the regular grunt army.

Anival hit his head against the wall, he walked to the next wall and pretended to look busy, everyone around him was focused. Again Anival hit his head against the wall, he let go a breath and kept hitting his head. On the fifth hit he stopped. The sound was different somehow. He knocked on it, and moved five feet, again he knocked it was more muffled. He had found something, and completely by chance.

Luck is on my side. Again.

Anival hit the wall, and was sure, something was behind it. “How cliché.”

Anival raised the butt of his rifle and hit the wall, the plaster fell off, and a metal door was revealed. He was sure it was what they needed; he raised his rifle, and shot the cover plate. An acrid smell filled Anival nostrils, he looked down and noticed a handle near his feet, it was a locker of sorts, and apparently, it was completely accessible, the only thing in the locker was, weapons. Anival looked down, and noticed paint near the cover to be bubbling, he wondered if it was the effect of the bolt, or something else, he kept staring.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anival didn’t know but he had stumbled upon an experimental weapon locker, the lockers was double lined for a reason, its contents, were extremely volatile, and as such, had been deemed failures
The locker exploded, Anival was blown backwards. Hazy green liquid hit a nearby computer; it started to melt into a plastic heap. The loss of that server was what was necessary for zippy to access what he wanted, at least, it was enough to make the objective attainable.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Anival was blinded by the sheer amount of pain in his forearm, it was on fire, the flesh melted and fell to the floor in globules, he squeezed his eyes shut and cursed his stupid bigot nature, and the questioned the mentality of his choices, in his mind he saw all the possible ways to have avoided the mess. Pay attention.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Edgter heard the explosion, then he heard grunts, Anival was near a smoking corner, a green haze was in the air, and an electronic voice started out. “Warning: Chemical breach, check into a breathing station” it repeated its programmed verse.  Edgter walked up to Anival, the trooper was holding his arm, or at least what was left of it, his skin was on the ground, and pink material still clanged to what seemed to be metallic bones.  Edgter was confused, and nauseous his first thought was to throw up, but then his new-found courage took over and he shouted for the other troopers.  The man had to be laid down, his hand was starting to melt as well, and that one, had white bone.
Edgter yelled for help, and half the squad got up, Skarr ordered the other half to stay alert and continue on. They held a writhing Anival down by his shoulders. He was very much conscious, but he didn’t scream. He grunted and moaned, but did not scream.
Kait was the first to notice, the  melting leg pieces.
“We have to remove the armor!”
The next fifteen minutes were a blur as they worked to help their fellow trooper.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Anival reflexively grabbed at his melting prosthetic, instantly he felt an even greater pain; in his blind pain he had made a mistake. Now his real hand was starting to burn. He closed his eyes, distancing himself from his body, he tried to take deep breaths, but instead only managed to bite his tongue, he refused to scream, because, if he screamed, it would to admit defeat. To admit defeat to his body, his mind, his SL, and his fellow squaddies. And, for him, defeat was not an option, as his instructor had said. Death before defeat, Brethren before blood, and Triumph over all.” At the time he had thought the instructor was over zealous, now he understood.

Anival had been in the corp for years, he had formed bonds, and had learned from trooper who he had perceived to be superhuman, but had in reality been imperfect creatures. Now, it was his turn to take the mantle, just as Skarr had taken his years before, he was supposed to be what the new troopers wanted to be.

So in the seconds it took for him to recognize his mistake, he had made up his mind not to scream.

Anival had lost track of time, and felt as if he were being turned over, his felt his throat constrict, and he started to cough, a chunk of something fell out, and he tasted copper. Then he blacked out

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anival had been turned around; the man had been biting his tongue to hold from screaming out, and was choking on his own blood. The squad once assured the man would survive, continued on in their duty. To find the codes.
