1.1 Urban Combat
The simulated environment closely resembled the live fire course in the Tadath complex. The course was a mix of technology and old style. There were hinged doors, old glass windows, duraglass windows, and automatic doors. The buildings were crammed close together providing small alleyways and cramped spaces.
For two weeks the group of troopers assembled in the simulation had trained in urban combat. They had learned how to kick in hinged doors, break open windows, use flash grenades to confuse the enemy, and how to use the flechette launcher to effect. Skarr had been a part of the training for those two weeks. He did not much like the flechette launcher, he preferred a blaster, but he had to use the weapon, it was useful for close quarters combat where the bullet would stop on impact. Blaster bolts tended to bounce off metal surfaces, and that was as dangerous for the enemy as it was for the one shooting.
They had ten minutes to clear the cluster of buildings. And there were ten troopers. They were facing twenty-five simulated enemies of the New Republic variety. Skarr was given command over four of the troopers, considering he was a squad leader. He had decided to take the left side of the street. The first door was an old wooden hinged door. All the troopers were waiting for now, was the alarm to go. The alarm rang and the troopers pounced into action.
“Squad form up! First building on the left! Ramirez! You have point!” Skarr snapped the orders quickly, efficiently. The squad hustled to the first building, Ramirez on one side of the door, Skarr on the other. With the butt of his gun, Skarr smashed the small window sitting next to the door. He grabbed a flash grenade from his belt and tossed it into the window. His head turned slightly as the flash grenade exploded inside. Ramirez moved from his position, kicking the door in. The young trooper ran quickly into the foyer, Skarr close behind him. Their flechette launchers went off in flurry of small darts taking down the two men occupying the foyer.
There was a flight of stairs leading upward and two doorways off the foyer. Ramirez took the side of one door, Skarr took the side of another. The other three troopers took up positions behind the two men waiting at the doors. Skarr held up a hand and counted down from three. When his fist had closed all the way, both men moved into the room, two with Ramirez and one with Skarr. There was one man in the room, he had taken up position behind a couch. The man behind Skarr yelled for him to duck and Skarr reacted immediately as the man pooped up from behind the couch and was shot by the trooper.
“Clear!” Skarr yelled. His comm crackled with Ramirez’s clear order as well. The squad gathered in the forum again, and began working up the stairs, Skarr as point. The stairs led to s small hallway with three doors leading to different rooms. Skarr and Ramirez ran into the first room. After a quick check, Skarr called out “Clear!” He heard fire from the other room. And then a shout with the clear signal.
The last room on the upstairs had another door on it. Skarr did the honors and kicked it open this time around. There were three men in the room who had thrown the furniture over in an attempt for cover. Skarr immediately hopped back behind the door frame. His squad stayed behind him. Ramirez ducked out of cover, peppering fire into the room. One gun inside the room fell silent, but the others turned to Ramirez. Skarr took that as his chance to fire at the remaining two. He took one out and as the last man’s gun swung toward him, Skarr crouched. The trooper behind Skarr gave the final man the kill shot.
With that building cleared, Skarr ordered his team to make haste for the next building over. As they crossed the alleyway in between the two buildings, a man shot at them. It pegged one of the troopers in the shoulder and he fell to the ground. The rest of the squad jumped to the sides of the alleyway. Skarr popped out of cover and shot the man in the throat. When they looked back to the trooper who had been shot, he had already de-rezzed out of the simulation. With only three men left in the squad, Skarr continued onto the next building. This building was more modern and the duraglass had to be broken by shooting it, this time.
One of the troopers shot a whole big enough to slip a flash grenade into in the window. Ramirez supplied the flash grenade and they slipped into the building. The four men inside had been blinded by the grenade and their arms were thrown over their eyes. The four troopers all dispatched one man each. This building was only one story and Skarr figured that there would be only four rooms to the house. But there were only two doorways leading off the main hall. The squad leader took one of the troopers and entered one of the doorways.
Ramirez yelled, “Clear!” From the opposite room. The room Skarr had entered was on the small side and there were only two enemies, but they fired as soon as the two Imperials entered the room. Skarr dropped to his stomach, spraying bullets. The trooper behind him had not been so quick to action and he dropped to the floor in a spray of digital blood. Skarr got quickly to his hands and knees and crawled to the table, over-ending it to use for cover. He was able to take out one of the Republic simulations, but the other remained, pinning Skarr behind his makeshift cover. The firing stopped when Ramirez entered the room and shot the remaining simulation.
Another alarm rang out, signaling the end of the simulation. The scene around them dissolved back into the large sim room. Sergeant Major Johnson stood nearby, clapping slowly for the troopers.
“That was well done, ladies and gentlemen,” Johnson announced. “Now if you will please return to your rooms, you will each receive your individual grades within a few days.” Skarr left the sim room hoping that he would pass. It would be a waste if he had gone through two weeks of training just to fail. A few days. He would wait those few days.
