I'm writing this note after some discussion on IRC with various people, including Fury who has responsibility and is arbiter of such matters.

Whilst I understand that everyone needs creative freedom, please consider realism in your stories. Events which will shape galactic events often need to be put to a High Council before you go ahead. In personal stories this is less of an issue, but in squad/squandron stories and above (Which are always official VE canon) try and keep your stories within our established framework.

It's very, very hard to justify being a fighter pilot or stormtrooper AND also being the ruler/commander/duke of planet xxx too. Virtually impossible in fact and I certainly won't allow these characters within the army. No one with wealth or a position of power is going to sign up to be a front line grunt.
Try and keep your character realistic or move things outside of our canon to personal stories. Avoid galaxy changing events unless you have discussed it with your high council, Fury always remains the final judge of such matters. If your character is involved with faction "x" they don't get to play ball with the VE officially unless you've discussed it with someone first. To quote Fury:

Finally I urge everyone to go and look at the wiki page which covers our current timeline. There are many changes to EU canon and recent events have wide ranging implications.

It's been a long time since we did a VE-wide campaign chapter, but hopefully we'll start them again soon so everyone gets firmed up on our current role in the galaxy.

To reiterate and probably beat a few dead horses here, this is NOT a call for you all to submit your character backgrounds to an approval system.

Just make sure your story makes sense. Can you realistically be a trooper or pilot AND be the ruler of an entire sector with a fleet under your command? Well, no. You'd be escorting ambassadors when supposed to be on patrol. Plus, we'd probably not let you serve even if an ally of the VE. Would be a huge conflict of interest.

If you are on the lam from a higher power, wrongly accused of something and/or trying to redeem yourself and reclaim a throne; that's one thing.

Mostly though, it's okay to be the child of moisture farmers, or a mechanic, or someone who got all patriotic, then drunk, then in a uniform with no clue how it all happened. Not everyone is a prince, and not everyone is from Corellia.

I am ALL for solid character development and backstory. I'm currently boring the hell out of some of you bumping up my character and you're only reading in case I drop a huge nugget of plot development in there somewhere. So thank you. And I'm sorry.

But keep it realistic, given that we're playing in a science fiction sandbox and all. I love that a lot of work has gone into some of the background some of you have done. But let's look at it from another angle.

You are in a military unit in space firing lasers or learning to use the Force, choking people from across the room and slicing limbs off with a plasma sword. That's pretty severe in its own right. No need to be royalty on top of it unless you really want to enhance that honorific with a story.

Not a title, but a story. Are you seeking vengeance against those who hurt/maimed/killed your parent/sibling/dog/bantha/droid? Are you just seeking adventure? A way to pay off a loan shark, find enough scratch to buy your own stead or business? THAT is the story. How you got here is more important than the things you own.
