Story 1: Interrogation

D slipped into a rear seat in the small room and waited for the instructor to arrive. There were only 3 other people in there, though it still felt crowded due to the size of the room. Wow, my one room apartment is a little bigger than this room. D thought as the instructor walked in. “Sit down and shut your mouths,” he said, a gruff guttural edge to his voice. “I’m here to teach you how to get the information you need out of your enemies as quickly as possible in a combat environment.” He stopped in front of the tiny desk. “You there at the back of the room!” “Yes sir?” D asked cautiously. “Let’s say the man tied to the chair in front of you knows the location of the Moff’s kidnapped daughter. You have 1 hour to get the information and find her before she is executed. What do you do?” The Sergeant inquired. D thought for a moment then responded with a question: “What do I know about the man?” The Sergeant named Altair chuckles, “You know that he has very little to live for if he reveals where the girl is.”

“Well I would probably find out if he has any loved ones and either threaten them or capture them and bring them in to show him that we have them.” D replied with an evil grin. The Sergeant shakes his head, “That’s one way to go about it, but such subtle tactics aren’t effective in a combat environment.” Sgt. Altair responded with a chuckle. “The best way to drain information from someone in a combat situation is brutal and efficient physical violence. Not enough to kill the person, but enough to get the information you need. I’ll give you some examples.”  Sgt. Altair started up the first Holotape, which showed a man tied to a chair sitting before Sgt. Altair. The Sergeant in the holotape picked up a pair of pliers and grabbed the man’s hand. He then proceeded to rip out the man’s fingernails one by one. “Where is she?!?!” The Sergeant screamed, as his spittle flew into the man’s face.

Wow these tapes are graphic, well if this is the way the Empire wants things done then so be it. D thought as the Sergeant switched to the next holotape. “Now this one is a little more subtle. What you do is you capture 2 people and beat the living hell out of one of them while you make the other watch so they know what their fate is if they don’t talk.” Sgt. Altair explained a smile on his face as the tape showed what he meant. “Okay that’s enough of the tapes. Now I’m gonna explain all the different techniques you can use other than the to previously mentioned.” Altair took a seat at the desk. “ The favorite is ripping out the fingernails, along with the other one shown, but you can also blast off their kneecaps, or you can remove the entire finger when you run out of nails. You can break their bones. As you can see there are many different ways to go about it.” Altair looked around then, “Are you paying attention?” They replied in the affirmative.

Altair dismissed class so they could grab some lunch. D ran to his apartment and grabbed some of his rations and quickly ate since they were only given 20 minutes to eat and get back to class. When he arrived back in the room, a new instructor was standing there with Altair. “Everyone this is Sergeant Major Cos he will be continuing your lecture with more psychological techniques.” Sgt. Altair said as he waved goodbye and left the room. “Okay listen up the methods Sgt. Altair taught you are effective, but leave the “victim” unsuitable to use as a hostage. I’m going to teach you how to keep his body intact so he is still useful after you extract the information.” SGM Cos stood and began to pace as he spoke.  “Firstly you must start out calm and gentle with him, luring him into a false sense of security. ‘we’re all friends here, just tell me what I want to know and you are free to go.’ You see what I’m going for here? He begins to trust you and might let slip the information you seek.” Cos stopped pacing and stared straight at them.

“Now for the more sick and twisted side of this, if he won’t talk when you’re nice start threatening to do horrible things once you find his family and friends. ‘If you won’t talk, when I find your family, your children are gonna be sorry you ever had them.’ As you can see this technique isn’t pleasant to most, but it is necessary to get the time critical information you need. Though for some, such threats aren’t merely threats, they’re promises.” Cos said as he grinned evilly. “One final technique I will teach you is the implied torture technique. You send for normally innocent items and give the victim a sadistic grin, like this: ‘Private! Bring me several medium sized fruits, some grease and several lengths of rope.’ As you can see this gets their attention really fast, but you need to leave them alone in the room for awhile while they sit and think about what you’re going to do to them. It works every time.” SGM Cos turned around as he finished his sentence. “That is all I have to say, now it is time for your test. You have 2 hours to complete it. Good Luck!”

D took a deep breath and started to answer the fifty questions based on what they had learned. He did take his time with it to make a hundred percent sure he got them all right. Afterwards he waited with the other three pupils to find out if he passed or not.  The two instructors exited the room and informed them that they all had passed the class, barely. D thanked them and saluted then went off to take a well deserved cigarette break.

He plays an ineffable game of His own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players [i.e. everybody], to being involved in an obscure and complex variant of poker in a pitch-dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a Dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time." - Terry Pratchett
