Axkvaa
Communications Technician
Level 1: Equipment and Procedures
Story 1: Installation, Utilization, & Operation of Basic Comm Equipment

Axkvaa couldn't believe the alarm was already going off, it seemed like he had just fallen asleep.  He stood up and shook the last bit of sleep away before getting all his gear ready for training first day of training.  He picked up his training sheet and skimmed over it momentarily...

“Hmm,” he thought aloud as he read in his head what his first course was. Installation, Utilization, & Operation of Basic Comm Equipment.  Axkvaa scooped up what gear he was told to bring and headed off to training.

Nervous he was, this was his first day of the rest of his life.  Making a mistake on the first day would certainly not be forgotten by anyone...at least not for a long time.  Lining up with the other recruits, he couldn't stop dwelling on the fact he knew somehow he was going to make a mistake somewhere.

After a few minutes of waiting the instructor arrived and made a couple passes by the new recruits.  When he skimmed past Axkvaa, there was a slight wince as the instructor glanced up and down.  The instructor stopped for a moment and doubled back to Axkvaa.

“Keep that face straight soldier, I dont wanna be seeing those expressions in my class,” the instructor said in a very stern and intimidating manner.  He stood looking at Axkvaa as if he was waiting for a response, then all of a sudden Axkvaa understood.

“Sir, yes sir!!!”

He couldn't believe it.  His fears undoubtedly came true...he was already slacking.  He was now a little more at ease in his mind, thinking too himself, “Well...I got my screw up out of the way, hopefully I can keep myself in order now.”

The instructor continued down the line of new recruits just skimming over all of them, checking out what he has to work with this time around.  After finishing his walk the instructor walked to the front of the entire group and stood for about a minute or two, completely silent, you wouldn't even be able to hear a breath if you tried with all your ability.

“Ok recruits...now that I've succeeded in making you nervous lets get down to business!  Today's course is very, very basic.  On the table up here there's a kit for each and every one of you containing everything you will need for today's exercise.  You will only be dealing with basic equipment today, but you will be expected to know how to operate every last bit by the end of the day.  Afterward there will be a small lecture and a heads up for tomorrow's course.  Every one of you will be tested, every one of you must pass...IS THAT CLEAR!”

“SIR, YES SIR!!!” shouted all of the recruits.

“Ok, before we begin I would like all of you to approach the table and get your training kits so I can explain what exactly this lesson will encompass.”

All of the recruits followed orders and formed a line leading to the table and took their kits as they're turn in line came.  Afterward they all reformed their ranks in front of the instructor with their kits on their backs.

“Alright, inside these backpacks you will find a Military-Grade Datapad, a planetary communications rig, a droid repair kit, a computer repair kit, a diagnostics kit, and a basic toolkit that includes anything else you will need.”

Everyone proceeded to open up their backpacks to take a quick look at everything that was in there.  The first thing Axkvaa looked at was the datapad.  This was basically the Comm Tech Field Manual that he would have to turn to for everything.  The most important part of any part of his job.  He was absolutely fascinated that this was actually happening.

“Today you are all going to have use your repair kits and tools, in conjunction with your Datapad and diagnostics kit to repair a droid and a computer in order to move on.  You will be alone on this task, with the exception of your Datapad which I personally would consider your best friend.  There is a table behind me for each of you, when I tell you to begin you will take a seat at a table and proceed to repair the droid, then use the droid and your tools to properly repair the computers communication module...you will know if you have succeeded...DOES EVERYONE UNDERSTAND!!!”

“SIR, YES SIR!!!”

“Ok than...best of luck to all of you...and BEGIN!”

Axkvaa didn't waste anytime, he immediately headed to his table and took out his datapad.  It was a simple repair droid, which made sense seeing as he had to “repair” the computer.  He skimmed over the droid and noticed a bit of fried wiring and and a faulty scanner.

“Theese shouldn't be that difficult'ed,” the Gungan said outloud to himself.

He figured he would start with the fired wiring because he would never know if he repaired the scanner properly if the wiring was bad.

He pulled out his datapad and instantly started looking at droid repairs.  Due to the level the wiring was fried it would require complete replacement.  He took out his droid repair kit and right away found some basic wiring that he could use.

The datapad was very descriptive, it had diagrams along with step-by-step procedures underneath them to assist him in his repairs.  He took out some wire cutters and crimpers and started cutting away the fired wiring.  Afterward, he took his new wiring from his repair kit and started wiring it in to the damaged droid.

Once he was done he took his crimpers and wire tips to safely make sure there were no lose or exposed connections.  Hoping all this was done correctly, he breathed for a moment and then started scanning through the datapad for scanner repair.

According to the datapad, it only looked as if the scanning lens was damaged.

“Seemple enough reepair methinks...”

He took the brand new lens out of his repair kit and proceeded to follow the step-by-step instructions in his datapad to replace the lens.

Finally he looked at the droid, and it looked as good as new.  Flipping the switch the droid started buzzing and beeping, and then to Axkvaa's amazement...STARTED SCANNING THE COMPUTER!!!

Axkvaa hooked his datapad up to the newly repaired droid and let the droid scan the computer for a moment or two.  Immediately upon finishing, the droid uploaded all the information to the datapad and shut down...

“Exkweese me sir...the droid shut downed it did!”

“That's correct soldier, the droid analyzed the issue, but its your job to fix it not his.  Use the information he uploaded to your datapad and you should have no issues.”

“Okieday Sir!!!”

According to the datapad, this particular computer would have to have the entire communication module removed.  Then Axkvaa would have to put an entire new data-board in the computer and wire it in.  So naturally, Axkvaa grabbed the already wired data-board...and tore it right out of the computer showing no mercy.

Looking through the computer repair kit he found a data-board and the wiring necessary to do the repair and started looking at the information the droid uploaded.  All of a sudden he noticed something that he hadn't noticed before.  He took the initiative and saved all the information the droid uploaded to his datapad just incase he would ever encounter a similar problem in the future.

The repairs didn't take long, and with the descriptiveness of the droid it was a simple place and wire procedure.  After he was done wiring the data-board into the computer he turned it on and once again to his amazement, his repairs were undoubtedly successful.

Once booted the computer asked for him to hook the datapad up, and so he did exactly that.  It uploaded some information to the datapad, but he was unable to access it.  After the upload was finished the computer said, “You are now complete with the practical exam please contact your insctructor.”

“Exkweese me sir, I have finished de reepairs!”

The instructor walked over to Axkvaa's table and looked at everything and said, “Good job soldier, the information that was uploaded to that datapad will not be accessible until I unlock it myself, but will be necessary to complete your next course.  Please wait until the last few are done and then I shall adress everyone as a group.”

“YES SIR!”

After everyone had finished they formed ranks again in front of the instructor ready for further instructions.

“Ok soldiers, all of you did a very good job today and I'm quite pleased.  Your next course will be a little more difficult and you will have to use all of the knowledge you obtained today, plus more to complete it.  That is all for today recruits, DISMISSED!”

“SIR, YES SIR!!!”

Everyone packed up and started to head out.  Axkvaa was thinking to himself on the way out he cant wait to see what comes next.  More than happy he signed up to be a Comm Tech, but upset he has to wait a whole day to continue his training...
