OOC:
So here’s the sitch. You’re getting pitted against each other in a game of Galatic Laser Tag (OMG lazergunPEWPEWPEW)! Its an in-squad competition only, so only Blackjackers please. I would create a pre-story, but since I don’t have time, I’ll do it when I get back (I’ve already finished of the previous story for you louts). Basically though, since we failed the last mission the higher ups people thought that this would be a good training exercise. This’ll also serve as an activity check, as it’ll require you all (excluding Garryll, myself, and protector Havvie) to post once (ONE TIME) every week. If you don’t well, keep reading and you’ll find out what happens.

So you’ve all been brought to the arena and told the same thing: You, being an elite trooper, are being pitted against “convicts” that are playing for a pardon of their crimes. However, you’re actually being pitted against each other. Don’t worry, you won’t get killed, persay. The lazergunsPEWPEWPEW are only set on painful :P

Each week (for a total of, hopefully, around six weeks) I’ll being giving you a word limit and a task, say reach your safe point, and in your post you have to do exactly that, and try and impress me when I get back on the 10th or 11th. Havvie will have some input too, as she will be guiding you through this first one. If you have any questions, ask her and do what she says.

The player field is 300 metres by 300 metres. If you’ve ever played laser tag, picture the arena you’ve played in but bigger. We are talking dim lighting (non of the flashy vests or guns though), ramps, mirrors, traps, safe zones… the works! You are allowed to do everything you would in a regular story—run, jump, climb, use your speciality etc. One thing though. You cannot “kill” anyone until I say so (explained later). However, you can shoot at other people. You’ll just miss every time until I clear you.

First Objective
You’ll all start evenly spaced in a hexagon like shape in the square playing field. Your first objective will be to set up a safe zone. To set up a safe zone you must do the following

Set up the coloured flag in you pack (you choose your colour, but no repeats please). This’ll take 5 minutes.

Find a weapon AFTER you set up the flag. There will be one magically placed within ten metres of your flag. However, it will be hidden, so no “Then Abalar saw the gun placed at eye level with red ribbon around it and took it.”

Fire a flare into the air, also of your colour, before the end of your post. This is a must. If you don’t do this, you will be disqualified and made to do boring exercises with me until everyone finishes. The flare signals your readiness. Don’t worry, no one is allowed to sneak up on you, as you all have the same instructions.

WORD LIMIT Let’s start off easy. 500 words plus or minus 10%. And I will be counting. That means nothing below 450 and nothing above 550 in words.

Rewards: Awarded after completion of each week
First place gets to kill the person with the lowest scoring post. To get first place you must have the highest scoring post. You will also get the benefit of a major positive event, such as finding a grenade or stronger weapon. You can role play this in any of your following posts. It will count towards your word limit. This person will also get one point at the end of the week.

Second place gets a minor event such as finding a new, more camouflaged spot. You can role play this in any of your following posts. It will count towards your word limit. You’ll get half a point at the end of the week. (Subject to removal, depending on number of survivors)

Second worse post gets a minor negative event like hitting your head on a branch or having your gun jam. You must role play this in the very start of your post before you do anything else. It will count towards your word limit. You will not score any points this week

Worst post gets killed. Once killed, you will be subject to tedious exercises that must be completed each week until this competition is finished. IF YOU DO NOT POST IN THE GIVEN WEEK, YOU WILL BE KILLED OFF BY ME AND I WILL GET THE POINT.

I’ll edit this post when I get back giving you the pre-story. Assume you’ve all been briefed individually and believe you are fighting convicts. What you don’t know is that you were all knocked out and placed in simulator pods. You were briefed in virtual reality, you are moving around in virtual reality, and you are killing and being killed in virtual reality.

I’ll explain the reward system and such more when I get back. You can ask Havvie what I’m looking for other than completion of objectives, but she won’t be able to tell you, as I haven’t told her anything much more than this.

Private first class Drexhel stood gauging which direction he should make his first move, indulging for a few minutes in the briefing, something he scantly paid attention to. First he had to set up his flag, whispers began in the back of his mind saying “east, go east”.

He rolled his eyes and muttered to himself “west”.

Strolling casually in his self confirmed path he narrowed his eyes with hope it might make his sight clearer in this poorly lit arena, being just able to make out his surrounding to the point he could see objects around him but still left with uncertainty of  what they where. He came to a solid structure, a steep steel ramp with a small tunnel running underneath, “good cover, good escape rout” his thoughts where unusually calm for a situation such as this. Ducking his head into the tunnel he set down on his knees and relieved his back of his backpack as he dropped it in front of him, undoing the clips and sliding out his pale blue flag and some screw in leg attachments he made way with putting up his base. He felt open to attack while setting up his opinionatedly pointless flag, Drexhel shook his head and returned to his duty “someone, somewhere must be getting kicks from this”.

His flag stood  inside the tunnel, looking at it for a second Drex made thoughts toward his next task, finding a weapon. The ramp above him had walls on either side, this made sense as a way to remain undetected, he moved towards the start of his venture, as he reached the beginning of the ramp he pressed his back to the wall and moved his body down so his knees where at chest level. He quickened his pace realising he had no means of avoiding fire if it came his way. As he came to a fork on the elevated ground he stood upon, Drex moved to the centre of the walk way, followed by a sound he regretted dearly, a panel under his foot, he hurried forward and found he'd activated something naught two foot in his way as the ground fell from under him and Drex followed suit. He landed on his back in an even darker area than before, his hand felt round on a bumped surface something rocked under his palm, he shook it then lifted it to find his rifle “thank god for that”. He stood up and pointed himself in the direction flowing under the walkway he had fallen from.

He came to a wall after following the under side back through the way he came, feeling for a way out and that he found as the wall spun and he toppled through landing face first by his flag and back pack. Drexhels final task for now was to fire off his flare, he tipped his pack upside down, the flare fell at his feet and rolled a little way from him, quickly he grabbed it and loaded it into his newly acquired rifle he rushed from the tunnel and pulled his trigger into the air sending the pale blue flare skyward, he then moved back to his flag to contemplate his next move.
Hold your heart in your sleeve, after all you never know when you might get shot in the chest.

Understanding is a limitation, Knowledge is a godsend, my friend you are staring into the eyes of madness.

Razor shook his head as he stared into the dim room.  It was large, the convicts could have been hiding anywhere.  He had on his back a light weight bag which contained one flare gun and one bright pink flag.  He had been told he was to plant his flag in the room where he was being inserted.

Razor felt extremely confused.  In a normal flag protection game you would keep the flag with you to stop the targets from getting it but now he was to plant it and leave it out in the open.

Razor looked around and saw that he had been inserted into the trash area because next to him was a heaping mound of garbage.  He slapped his palms together and walked over to the garbage mound.

The pile was built up of sheets of thin metal and smelly bits of food.  Razor swept the disgusting detritus off of the top of the sheet metal and placed it upright.  He then leaned two more pieces of sheet metal on either side.  Finally he reached into his pack and unfurled his flag.  He threw the shaft of the flag pole hard into the ground.  Razor then finished covering the top of his flag with two more sheets of metal.

Thin sheets of pink light splayed out from the little bunker Razor had just built.  Not good enough, but it'll have to do, he thought as he turned away from the flag.  Just then a bright flash went into the sky and arced up then gracefully fell to the ground.
Someone else is on the prowl, and Razor hurriedly went sneaking off to find a weapon.

A durasteel bunker was dug into the side wall of the building and Razor approached it carefully.  He stealthily prowled onto the stairs leading into it.  After his quick assessment of the bunker he realized that he was utterly alone.

A desk was in the corner of the bunker but for some reason the small wooden thing did not sit flush against the wall.  Razor speedily ran over to the desk and looked behind it.  Wedged between the wall and the desk was a black blaster.

He grabbed the gun that was wedged between the desk and the wall and jiggled it up and down.  The gun was stuck tight.  He tried to move the desk but he could not.  In the corner of the bunker sat a maul that would have been used to prevent attackers entering the bunker but would now be his saving grace.

He grabbed the weighted hammer and swung it high over his head smashing it down onto the flat top of the desk.  The desk split in half and Razor was able to pull the two half desks apart.  The gun clattered to the floor as he moved the second half.

Razor sprinted back through the door in the side of the bunker and back to where he had inserted his flag.

He was reassured when he saw the slight pink glow emanating from the sheets of metal.  He grabbed the flare gone and shot it out into the air.  The flare exploded into hundreds of tiny hot pink sparks.  His position was given and now, the hunt was on.

Vaulting over a fallen tree, Jori came to a complete stop and leaned back against it, trying to catch his breath. Moments before, he had been slouching against a tree, this one upright, when he had awoken to a lack of noise. Complete silence surrounded Jori and that made him uneasy. Something was wrong and he needed to be prepared. Only then did he remember what he was supposed to be doing.

Convicts. Fight for pardon. Got it.

Knowing that he had to find a safe house of sorts, he rose quickly and set off at a run through the forest, acutely aware that he held no weapons. He did have the pack that held the flag and its stand and that could be used as a weapon to provide some blunt force trauma to the head if he got a lucky hit. Pushing those thoughts away, he began looking for the high ground. Ideally, it would allow him to spot any approaching beings and would have protection for himself.

Soon enough, the ground began to slope upwards and the trees began to thin. Climbing over the top of the hill, he saw what looked to be an enclave of fallen trees, arranged in a semi-circle.

Odd. Can't be natural. Bears investigating.

Jori began a thourough lookover of the enclave, careful not to miss anything. He didn't want to set up his flag, only to be attacked from behind by an previously unseen enemy. Once satisfied, he took off his pack and began to remove the flag and stand components. Meticulously, he set up the stand and, once it was assembled, attached the blood red flag.

Now, he needed to find something to defend himself with, preferably a standard weapon, though he wouldn't pass down an ordinary stick if he didn't have anything else. He was planning on heading back down to the forest when something caught his eye. At the very top of the arranged stack of trees was a small shape, almost like a dagger. That fully engaged his interest and he walked over and began to climb, leaping deftly from tree trunk to tree trunk. At last, he reached the top and made his way over to where the dagger was stuck into the wood at what seemed to be the direct center of the semi-circle.

Bending down, he removed the dagger and examined it. With a wicked looking blade and hilt, the dagger may have looked purely decorative to an untrained eye, but Jori was far from that. With care, he looked it over and decided that it would make a fine weapon. Leaning over the edge, he aimed and released the dagger, letting it fly towards the bottom trunk. It hit its mark perfectly and dug itself into the soft wood. He started to descend when he remembered his flare gun. Taking it out, he pointed it upwards and pulled the trigger, sending a blood red beacon
arcing into the sky.

OOC:
I do believe that is 500 words. Also, This is what I had in mind for the look of the dagger. And its the middle one that I chose.

OOC:
And thats the end of the week. Since Corvin didn't post, he will be killed off. I'll announce later who gets the kill. Kestrel will be joining in this week. She'll have to make two posts to make up for her absence.

I'll edit this post, most likely before the meeting, with the details that you'll use in your next week of posts. From now on, you'll have until Sunday, 8:30am GMT to get your posts in. Stick to the deadline or you'll share Corvin's fate.

“Alright, they are out, Abalar” Garryll said as the pair sat at the control panel overlooking the pods. “This is where it’ll get interesting.” Garryll kicked his feet up and placed them on the outer left edge of the control panel. “No chance of a foot rub?”

“You’re damn right. Rub your feet,” Abalar said, half smiling. She didn’t take her eyes off the view screen though. A series of view points had been set up with hidden cameras to watch the action. Abalar and Garryll also had the ability to see and hear what their troopers were seeing, hearing, and speaking. Currently, they were all just getting their bearings.

“So, how long is this going to take?” Garryll asked.

Abalar had, once again, been in charge of obtaining the squad’s next mission. With the other squads already out completing their missions, and no new threats on the rise, Blackjack had been given nothing. However, to make up for the failure they had in their last mission, Abalar had organized a competitive game of Galactic Laser Tag for their troopers. To make it more interesting though, they had all been knocked out by her in their sleep and thrown in the virtual reality pods. The Blackjack troopers had no idea that they were in a virtual world. Abalar had even gone in a pod to brief each member individually. Each thought that they were on the real Tadath being put up against real convicts that were fighting for their real freedom. The actual reality of their situation was quite the opposite: they were on a virtual Tadath, in a virtual arena, being put up each other, fighting for their virtual lives. Abalar almost pitied them.

“As long as it has to. Now shut up and watch the view screen. I’m going to be touching buttons over here and playing with their reality. Don’t disturb me unless it’s important.”

“Yes, mother,” Garryll said, and did as he was told.

Abalar cracked her fingers. This was going to be fun.

After they had all set up their flags, Abalar randomly placed the weapons they would need in their general vicinity. Of course, she didn’t make it too easy. They were Blackjacks after all.

Abalar then waited for the flares to go up.

One.

Two.

And three.

The forth. Where was the forth?

Corvin. His colour hadn’t gone up yet. Abalar contemplated for a moment. This would be a perfect time to test the maximum strength of the stun pistol. She chose Razorsedge. He had used the garbage provided in the most inventive way. Abalar spoke into the mic set in the control panel. Her comments were directed only at him, and only he could hear them.

“You are close to one of the convicts. Take him out. I will transmit his position to you, as he hasn’t set off his flare. Over.”

“Orders received, over and out.”

Abalar then cranked the strength of Razorsedge’s pistol and lowered the strength of Corvin’s. She also temporarily enabled accuracy for Razor, so he could actually hit Corvin when he shot at him.

Garryll tapped on her shoulder. She glanced angrily at him. Garryll pointed to another unconscious body being thrown into a pod. “New recruit. Private First Class Kestrel.”

Abalar nodded.

“How is the newbie Jori holding up?”

“He is a sergeant, Garryll. He’s not that much of a newbie.”

“Yes, well, I was referring to his newbieness in Blackjack.”

“He’s doing fine. I’m interested as to how Kestrel will do. Finally, another woman.”

“Bah,” Garryll said as he turned back to the view screen. “Let’s just see what they do.”

OOC:
Second Objective
Try and locate another "convict". I'm looking for detail and creativity in doing so. None of the "then Drexhel stumbled upon Kestrel". That's not going to fly with me. You will need to coordinate with your squad mates. Who is finding who? Leave no one out.

Once you have done that, take aim with your stun pistols. Do not shoot. Just leave it on "Jori took aim, pressing his finger against the trigger. His target needed to show itself a bit more before he could guarantee the shot" or something.

Maximum Words: 750 Plus/minus 50% again.

Kestrel: Do two posts, one for the first objective, one for the second.

Drex: I need you to watch your punctuation when it comes to speech. It was your major weakness in this post. Please read up on proper punctuation for speech and utilize that information in your next post. This week, I will be looking for the completion of the objective and an improvement in the punctuation.

Razor: Your punctuation in general needs a bit or work. Read up on comma use as well as colon and semi-colon use and utilize that information in your next post. As with Drex, I will be looking for the completion of the objective and improvement in general punctuation. Your bonus will be a) location of Corvin and b) finding a box in Corvin's base that has stealth shoes - they make you walk quietly. Call them what you want.

Jori: Your weakness in this post was grammer, particularly sentence structure. Read up on it on the web and utilize the information in you next post. I will be looking for both the completion of the objective and improvement in sentence structure.

Corvin: I'll be giving you your assignment tomorrow. Via ComNet PM.

All of You: Ask me questions if you are confused about something. There were no minor rewards given out. You'll have until Sunday, July 18th 8:30 am GMT to get everything done.

Drex crept from his low arched tunnel, his eyes had become accustomed to the darkness allowing the once blurry shapes to become solid structures, he stood readily observing his surroundings. The flare he had fired was fading quickly but not only his own signal was there, three others fired almost simultaneously with his own had cascaded through the blackened skyline and where, like his own, meeting the end of their burning span. The flesh on Drexhels knuckles became nearly transparent as his fingers took a vise like clasp around the butt of his pistol, his teeth clenched tighter still as he took his first steps out from the cover of his base.
After a few minutes of grudgingly forced thought he made a decision based upon what he already knew, the ramp he had previously climbed led to a floor trap, he knew that was there and he could now avoid it. Drex turned his head towards the inclining surface before making his way there.

To his surprise it had now changed, where it used to be a flat upward slope now presented a set of steps, he shrugged his shoulders and spat on the floor then took a first step up the stair way. He moved into a crouching jog, his toes landing softly before his heels to minimise the noise from his boots, he stopped shortly before the trap hole that caught him before and made a small leap to the left side turn then resumed pace. In his rushed sense of awareness he failed to see a second set of steps shortly after his landing and fell, tumbling downwards and crashing hard to the ground below with his legs sprawled straight in front of him sitting in an up right position.

What was that? he caught a glimpse of something humanoid in shape, it looked poised and waiting to strike, Drex shifted his weight forward and pushed himself up then rushed to hug the wall. Whatever it was it was not moving and the distance was only two apartment blocks away with only an ally and some trash canisters separating them. He ducked down low, moving slowly forward and trying to keep out of sight behind the various sized covers, he saw only brief visions of his potential adversary, enough to know it was still there. Feeling his heart pounding against his ribs he could take no more of this suspense, pouncing out of cover he found not a man or woman but a conveniently arranged trash pile. He cursed under his breath then moved backwards through the ally, thoroughly disappointed that he did not get the surprise attack he had hoped for.

His eyes were drawn to the shimmering ground a short while away, it called to him as he hated the cramped environment that was the city behind him. Drex stood enchanted by the glistening floor but one hundred meters away but his thoughts said no!, something was telling him this was either a trap or a bad idea. Contemplating the outcome of either diverting backwards or continuing towards the new area Drexhel decided he was in as much danger either way, he bound forward moving quickly, if this was a trap he would not make himself an easy target. A rough thirty seconds later he stood panting and feeling idiotic, with all that effort and for no reason at all, Breathing in deep he drew up to his full hight to see his surroundings once more.

Drex found his feet were planted on a low ridge, the shining surface he had seen was naught but water, a large clearing of it granted, it stretched an estimated two hundred and fifty meters north to south and possibly half that east to west. A small island lay north of him and around one hundred yards south was a bridge crossing the pool, straight ahead he could the edges of forest. Drexhels face contorted to one of confusion, concern and astonishment as he noticed the outskirts of the water were surrounded by a multitude of different terrains. As his narrowed eyes came more into focus he could see shapes,  moving shapes at the edges of the water, he gripped his pistol in his shaking hand uncertain of this being his mind playing tricks, not wanting to leave it to chance Drex readied his firing arm.
